eter Jickling has a casualness about him. He sits, relaxed, sipping a beer as he relates the inspiration for his new book of poetry, Downtown Flirt.

The book itself reflects a period in his life where he explored moving to Toronto to see what was possible outside the Yukon.

“I knew I wanted to move to Toronto to write,” Jickling said. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I’d hit a bit of a slump.

“The stuff I wrote, 95 per cent of the stuff that is in the book, I wrote while in Toronto.”

Jickling admits the title was meant to be a bit provocative, so it would be catchy and memorable. It also reflects the double entendre of a young man seeking romance in Toronto, while also be-

ing out of his element and unsure of if downtown Toronto is where he should be.

“Under it all is this undercurrent of a guy unfamiliar with the big city and charting a course within that,” he said.

Jickling describes the collection itself as a “variety of urban vignettes of Toronto interaction.”

He’s a bit self-deprecating that he kind of stumbled upon the idea. The first poem was about an incident he saw take place on a street car. One passenger had accidentally knocked a woman with his cart and she was very upset and letting him know it.

“Everyone else was like, ‘It’s an accident!’” he said with a laugh.

“And I thought to myself, that’s a poem.

“I decided to do this (kind of writing) until the real inspiration.

Then I realized this was the real inspiration.”

There are a number of developing storylines that carry through many of the 60 poems.

The 84-page book is being officially launched at a free event on Feb. 26 at the Woodcutter’s Blanket.

Jickling wants to invite friends and colleagues to come chat about the book and celebrate being published. The event is open to anyone who wants to stop by and learn more about the anthology, or what Jickling is up to next.

He’s already working on his next collection. “I’m about one or two-thirds of the way through a book of the same length,” he said. “My new poems are a bit shorter than in Downtown Flirt.

I’ve become more minimalist.”

The Yukon is certainly a little more calm than downtown Toronto, so being more of a minimalist here just seems right.

F

awn Fritzen hasn’t always considered herself a feminist.

The Whitehorse jazz singer/ songwriter wasn’t using that term in 2013 when her first CD, Bedroom Voice, came out. Or in 2016 when she released her second album, Pairings.

She certainly didn’t think of herself that way in 2011. That’s

when an invitation from Jazz Yukon gave her fledgling career a boost—the organization asked her to perform in the inaugural season of Jazz in the Hall.

When she returns to the Old Fire Hall on March 7, with a new set of musical collaborators and an original program of songs and stories, she’ll do so with increased confidence and an altered aware-

ness of herself as both a woman and an artist.

“From day one, the intention of Jazz in the Hall has been to highlight a local musician, but to ask them to stretch and do something they haven’t done before,” Fritzen explained.

she has drawn mainly from two or three sets of jazz standards, with a few of her own songs blended in for good measure. She decided to do something different for the upcoming show.

“I think it’s the culmination of everything I’ve been learning and thinking about for the last several years. What it did was provide me with an opportunity to dive in and really do the work that I’ve been thinking about doing,” she said.

“I’ve been writing music since I started singing professionally, but I’ve never written an entire show.

I’ve always kind of written just when I felt like it, when I had an idea pop into my mind.

“This has been more purposeful in terms of the things I want to say, so it’s been a really neat learning experience for me to have a deadline.”

Fritzen’s intention is to package six of her own songs (some of which were still being tweaked in mid-February) with six discrete stories she has written. She also plans to live-record the performance and issue it early next year as her third CD. Thematically, the program will reflect the “strong opinions in terms of feminism” she has been developing in recent years, particularly around areas of consent and communication.

“All these various thoughts have been swirling around about how women, especially, can be empowered to examine what they want and to communicate that in ways and environments that are safe and to say what they don’t want in ways that are safe,” she said.

“I don’t necessarily mean physical safety, but psychological health and emotional safety also.”

Fritzen’s artistic development took a big leap in 2015, when she

spent 10 intensive weeks in Toronto learning about the nitty gritty of the music business. It happened during a “dark time” when she was feeling trapped by family obligations.

Although the “wife and mom” part of her felt guilty about doing something just for herself, “it was the artist part of me that really needed to go and the woman and human part of me that needed to go,” she admitted.

“That is a reality that has been really clear to me for a long time—that sometimes the needs of the family and the needs of the woman are in direct conflict.

That’s just reality.”

Since that time, Fritzen and her husband reached an amicable end of their marriage. She also released Pairings and entered a new romantic relationship with pianist David Restivo, who now lives in Nelson, B.C.

Besides his role as pianist in the foursome Fritzen has assembled for her March 7 show (and various B.C. dates to follow), Restivo provided the initial melodies for several of her new songs.

One of these (she describes it as a “bittersweet goodbye”) re-

calls their unsuccessful attempts to step away from a complicated long-distance relationship. Another, written as a birthday gift, is a “love song about the connection we have,” she said.

“There’s another one I wrote that’s called ‘Gaslight,’ which I wrote completely on my own, so far. It’s not done yet. It refers to that psychological, manipulative technique of making somebody doubt their own reality,” Fritzen explained.

There’s another one that’s really about finding your voice as a woman. It’s called, ‘Make a Little Noise’. That one started with a melody David wrote for me that just turned out to be the perfect vehicle for this idea.”

Fritzen admitted that other songs in the works haven’t yet borne fruit, including one about “saying yes to things I didn’t really want to say yes to and how I lost a little bit of me every time I did that until I became somebody I didn’t even recognize.”

In addition to Restivo on piano, the ensemble she’ll be fronting for Jazz in the Hall includes Victoria-based bassist John Lee and drummer Kelby MacNayr.

“They’re wonderful musicians.

I just love their energy and the sense of humour and humanity they bring,” Fritzen said.

Fawn Fritzen and the Fellas will perform Thursday, March 7 at the Old Fire Hall. The evening begins at 7 p.m. with an educational vignette by Steve Gedrose. It will end with an open jam session after the feature act.

y It was the end of my first camino, the ancient pilgrimage route across Spain, and I never wanted to put those dang boots on again. For the previous decade, they had served me well and felt comfortable during many one-to-fourday hikes. After a month of walking up and down rocky hillsides though, along cobblestone streets, across wide plains and through a couple of cities, my feet were killing me and the boots were falling apart. I threw them in a dumpster in the beach town of Finisterre at the Spanish west coast.

My knees hurt, too. Even stepping onto or off of curbs made me wince. I realized I had not been entirely prepared for this venture. So, on the one hand, I was delighted to have reached the end of the trail and was happy to take a break from walking. On the other hand, I wanted the Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James, to never end. The process of walking every day had emptied me out, erased non-essentials, stripped me down like a piece of old furniture, getting rid of all the scratch marks and graffiti and chipped paint. The result of furniture-stripping is a chair or table in its natural state. The wood has a glow to it. After the camino, I didn’t want to lose that glow in myself.

However, we’d arranged to visit my husband’s parents in Germany and to spend a few days in France on the way there, so we got on the bus. First stop was Paris, where we’d had a brief holiday 15 years prior.

Do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?

If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel.

There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

n a Thursday afternoon at Takhini Elementary School, a class played dodgeball in the gym, seemingly unaware that, on the other side of the heavy blue curtain pulled across the school’s stage, was Paris.

It was obvious as soon as you stepped behind the curtain. There was a tree-lined street with tall, black gas lamps leading to a yellow chateau. In front of it sat Kamryn Ukrainetz, dressed in a black-and-white striped shirt with a beret and red ascot. Oh, and cat ears.

“I’m Toulouse,” she said, referencing her role in Takhini’s production of The Aristocats, about a crew of pampered felines who are unceremoniously relocated from their chateau to the countryside by a jealous butler and have to team up with some outdoor alley cats to get home. The school is putting on a 30-minute adaptation of the Disney story on March 6.

It’s something Takhini does every year, said teacher Amanda Bartle. As far as she knows, it’s one of the only elementary schools to mount a production outside of a Christmas concert.

It’s a massive effort that begins with October auditions and ends with two March performances - a matinee that invites other local schools and a 6 p.m. performance for friends and family.

Of the 144 students at the school, Bartle said around 110

are involved somehow. And while all 25 staff at the school also participate, it’s really led by the kids.

“Our biggest thing is to make it as student-centred as possible, so the students are running the lights, the students are running the audio, the students are running choreography, the students are dancing, they’re the actors and the singers, they’re painting the sets.”

Not only does that build skills and a sense of community, the play helps accomplish another goal the school has.

“One of our big school goals for the last, well, eight years, has been increasing literacy in the school,” said Bartle. “And literacy comes in so many forms and this has been one of them, especially when you think of the kids learning their songs and learning how to read a script, learning how to read where they are onstage.”

“The arts have been proven over and over again to be something that brings a school together and helps some of those kids who don’t always succeed in the classroom and the academics, they tend to shine with the dance or they tend to shine with the technology portion.”

Bartle said there’s so many moving parts involved in putting the play together, that there’s a role for everyone.

“So I think people jump at that

opportunity.”

Ukrainetz has been jumping at it for the last six years, first as a singer (where primary students start) and now as an actor, a role she enjoys.

This is only the second year for Aven Sutton, who’s taking on the role of an alley cat as well as the role of what Bartle describes as “a courageous mouse.” She said she gets a little nervous before performances, but handles it by reminding herself that she has studied her lines and knows them well.

Both Sutton and Ukrainetz agree there’s something of a rush that comes with the March performances. It’s nice to see all the effort that’s been poured into the play over the course of the year (mostly recesses and lunch breaks) come together.

Bartle said families really seem to appreciate the effort as well.

Some kids, she said, have family flying in from outside Whitehorse to attend the evening performance.

“It’s a big community-builder,” said Bartle.

There is more to Raven mythology than clamshells and Odin Digging into the significance of a northern symbol

O

ne of my many favourite Bill Reid carvings, Raven and the First Men, is part of a Haida creation myth which is permanently displayed in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia.

It depicts the exact moment, on a remote Pacific beach, when Raven found a clamshell full of tiny human beings desperate to be released from their eternal prison and freed to roam the Earth forevermore. Not long after that dramatic moment of human creation, Raven found the sun, moon and stars locked away in an old man’s box of treasures. Raven distributed them up into the universe, thus creating daylight, moonlight and beacon stars, so we could see where we were going and know where we’d been.

Thus, all mankind, according to Haida and other Indigenous mythologies, owes a debt of gratitude to Raven for giving us the gift of life on the planet now known as the beautiful Blue Marble.

Not long ago, that was pretty much the extent of your narrator’s knowledge on the subject of raven mythology, which now needs to be explored more deeply for another project. It became necessary to dive into the raven archives and become a mini-expert on the subject, which brings us to the exact definition of what constitutes mythology.

It derives from two Greek words. “Mythos” means “story of the people” and “logos” means “spoken or written words.” Until the invention of the world’s first cuneiform tablets by the Sumerians in roughly 3,300 BC, human beings throughout all of prehistory passed on their stories orally, commonly around campfires inside caves and huts while eating the evening meal. Since then, written mythologies have replaced oral traditions, but not at the expense of ravens, which are ubiquitous around the northern hemisphere.

I just wanted to write a simple children’s book for my grandkids about a talking raven. I’ve now discovered that the black bird has been a serious player on the world stage since before the (true) dawn of man, making Reid’s magnificent sculpture and the Haida’s quaint myth a drop of water in an ocean of ravenology. I have uncovered so much worldwide mythology about the Yukon’s beloved territorial bird, the current quandary is where to start. It can’t be at the beginning because ravens go back to the dinosaurs, according to yet another myth.

So let’s begin with a couple facts: Common raven populations increased across our continent between 1966 and 2014, according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey. Partners in Flight

estimates their global breeding population to be 20 million, with 18 per cent living in Canada, 9 per cent in the U.S., and 3 per cent in Mexico. They rate a six out of 20 on the continental concern score (established by Partners in Flight) and are not on the 2014 watchlist.

It’s a virtual toss-up to scientists which of the three smartest animals in the world, ravens, chimpanzees or dolphins, are second only to humans. Ravens are easily the smartest birds according to ornithologists.

“To have a raven’s knowledge” is an Irish proverb meaning to have a seer’s supernatural powers.

Ravens were the favorite bird of Lludd, the Celtic god of artists and artisans. Like Odin, he was said to have two ravens to attend to all of his needs.

Speaking of Odin, here is our second raven myth after the historical Haida clambake:

and Muninn (memory), which flew around the world every day and reported back to Odin every night about what they saw.

Odin can be recognised by his hat and cloak, long beard and one eye. His spear, Gungnir, is one of the main foundation myths of the Viking Age. Others include his ring, Draupnir, which drips to form eight new rings every nine nights, and the horse, Sleipnir, which is mentioned early in Old Norse literature. With eight legs, Sleipnir was not a horse to bet against.

Odin’s two ravens are very old, as evidenced by their appearance on ornaments and ancient rune stones. Odin is also known as “the raven-god.” If you have ever seen a battlefield after combat, it becomes clear how Odin’s ravens tied in with his role as god of war—a battlefield is a feast for ravens and other scavengers.

The Chinese said ravens caused bad weather in the forests in order to warn people that the gods were righteous on Earth. There are many Tibetan murals depicting ravens, which says something about the bird’s holy connotations.

In Japanese and Korean mythologies, there is a tripedal raven or jungle crow, known as Yatagarasu and Samjokgo. The creature is known to be associated with the sun, and represents divine intervention in earthly, human affairs.

In Chinese mythology, the crow is associated with the sun. Here too, it is a three-legged bird named Sanzuwu. According to the myth, there were originally ten “Sun Ravens.” Only one of them rose in the sky at a single point of time.

However, one day they decided to rise all at once, blotting out the sun like an eclipse. The effects of this were devastating to the Earth, so the gods sent an archer to shoot down nine of them. One remained and the Earth returned to normal.

The Chinese myth portrays how the life-giving sun may also be dangerous to humankind.

Grey Matters with Barry Waitt

The reluctant senior citizen

W

hen I was first asked if I wanted to join the talented group of writers at What’s Up Yukon and contribute a column that would provide a perspective as a male “senior,” I thought, “I don’t know. I don’t feel like a senior. I don’t even like to admit that I am a senior.”

These reluctant, even renouncing thoughts, became the seed for a mini-journey. Am I a senior?

If so, why am I reluctant to say so?

So what is a senior citizen? According to Collins English Dictionary: “A senior citizen is an older person who has retired or received an old age pension.”

According to Merriam Webster’s definition, a senior citizen is: “…an older person, usually over the age of 60 or 65, especially one who is no longer employed.”

According to FindLaw Canada’s website, the age at which senior

discounts generally start is 55.

However, for many government benefits, you have to be at least 60 or 65 years of age in order to qualify. Most commonly, for the purposes of government benefits, the age of qualification for senior benefits is currently 65. Recently, there have been changes made to Old Age Security (OAS) eligibility.

Starting in April 2023, the OAS age of eligibility will rise from 65 to 67.

Yet, if you are 55 and you visit an Arby’s and some McDonald’s locations, you can get a senior discount. (Burger King requires you to be at least 60.) If you move to the United States and join the American Association of Retired Persons, you are entitled to some discounts at the young age of 50.

So whether you are a senior citizen or not depends on what year it is, what country you are in and where you are having lunch.

Let’s break this down a bit.

According to both of the above noted dictionaries, a senior citizen is an older person. The average life expectancy for a male in the Yukon is 75, so potentially being in the last quarter of my life appears to put me in the “older” category.

I am now receiving an old age pension, so that puts me in the senior citizen category.

Am I retired and no longer employed though? Not really. After working full-time in the same profession for thirty years in greater Vancouver, I now live in Whitehorse. Soon I will receive T4s from five different employers for 2018, but I still seem to have time for volunteer work and my domestic duties.

My age? Even though I lived most of my life in Vancouver, somehow I ended up celebrating my 60th birthday in Tok, Alaska, this past May. Therefore, by at least a couple of age standards I am a senior citizen.

What is my conclusion based on these definitions and standards?

There is enough evidence to conclude that I am a senior citizen, but still enough ambiguity for me to remain a reluctant one.

In terms of my personal experiences, the following are things that have definitely made me feel like a senior: • Realizing that the people who were training me for one of my new jobs in Whitehorse were easily young enough to be my grandchildren!

• Going to an elder active activity and having trouble keeping up.

• Not being able to continue with the “oh, my aching body” classes at the Canada Games Centre due to my aching body.

• Having arthritis in multiple parts of my body.

• Realizing all my favorite music is 40 years old or older!

Barry is reluctant to stop seizing life’s adventures • Staying up late means going to bed after 10 p.m.

• Keeping a big jar of prunes on the kitchen counter.

• Wondering when I am going to fit my nap in, shortly after rising in the morning.

On the flip side, the following experiences have made me feel like I am not a senior: • Sledding down the hill at our friend’s house longer than their young grandchildren.

• Discovering mountain biking in my late 50s and loving it, even after the occasional collision with a tree.

• Flying through the air on the biggest zipline adventure I have

• At 60 years old, being the fastest in my leg of the walking teams in the Klondike Trail of ‘98 Road Relay.

• Embarking on new … ok.

• Now, wait! I’m struggling to add to this second list while the list of why I am a senior keeps growing in my head.

Hmmm, I guess I am a senior citizen.

Okay, I admit it. I want that senior discount at the drugstore, I just don’t want to say it out loud to the clerk.

And although Yukon is absolutely not excluded from this scourge, would there be fewer violent incidents here without investigative journalism of the sort found in Québec?

The simple goal of these techniques is that violence (i) becomes and then (ii) remains a banal fact that is endorsed and legitimate (iii) to the point of going unpunished. This goal is reached once we observe one or more victims completely submitted to the aggressor, both mentally and physically. For example, a romantic partner who alleges conjugal violence could later seek to minimize and protect their aggressor.

In conclusion, the phenomenon of violence is no longer a secret to you, including its cycle and characteristics, such as control and a total lack of effort: those are strong incentives for all aggressors. Today, I discussed one of 20 techniques by which violence becomes banal, endorsed, legitimized and eventually unpunished: the “dream” of every aggressor.

“Patsy won the ugly animal contest five years in a row. They used to have a spring festival called Winfest and one thing they did at Winfest was the ugliest animal contest. The first year they had it, Patsy won it. And the second and the third and the fourth!

And on the fifth year, the judges were not going to give it to her. The judges were Buckwheat and a woman. I forget her name. Anyway, when they announced that they were not going to select Patsy that year, Patsy tried to pee on the woman’s foot and they decided that was so ugly, she won it the fifth year too.”

“That’s not true!” I said, but Frank sticks to his story. Having known Frank for years, I’ve heard many amazing tales that I know are rooted in fact. He’s lived a long life. Interesting things happen.

Desperate for a visual, I asked Frank what type of dog Patsy was.

He just chuckled. “Patsy was a mutt.

“She was a really, really smart dog. It took me 10 minutes to teach her to sit and stay. She sat peacefully all the way home, driving to Skagway … When she got home, she took one look at Nancy and said ‘Nancy, I’m your little dog and you are my person.’ So she was really attached to Nancy. Patsy was the same way,” Frank reminiscenced affectionately.

As she got older, Frank repaid Misty for her years of tricks and loyalty by patiently taking her out to pee at all hours of the night and making her as comfy as possible. She lived to be 19; almost as impressive as Patsy’s preceding record of 21!

As he got older, Frank’s life has been enriched by all his canine friends (so have the lives of his family members.)

Never one to shy away from adding another mouth to the table, or dog to the dog bowl, he has an endless supply of both vet bills and seemingly tall, but all too true, “pawsitive tails.”

Very different in appearance from one another, both Misty and Patsy were two of those colourful souls that provided companionship to his family and warm, comical memories.

Is this not the common dog’s greatest purpose?

She could even play the piano on cue. She would hop up on the bench when told “up” and hit the keys when she heard “play.” Frank laughed remembering one man who, perhaps expecting Beethoven, was disappointed with her performance.

But I was privy to Misty’s “shows” and I thought they were grand and oh-so funny!

“Misty was a mix. She had lots of different things in her. She had some springer spaniel in her, but that long hair, I don’t know where that came from.”

Where Patsy was unabashedly ugly, Misty was innocently cute. She had long black hair that puffed out over her ears and between the digits of her paws.
