I

f you love to sing, but you’ve never stepped onstage in front of a crowd of people to do it, maybe you’ve just never had the proper motivation. How does $1,500 sound?

That’s the top prize for the winner of the Superstar competition, taking place at the Yukon Arts Centre on Feb. 20 during Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous.

The event is a huge confidencebuilder, said Robyn Gillespie, organizer of this year’s event.

Gillespie hasn’t performed at previous Superstar competitions, but she does regularly sing at open mics including Epic Pizza’s Whitewater Wednesdays, and evenings at Whiskey Jack’s. She also ran for Rendezvous Queen in 2016, so she’s seen how events such as open mics and Rendezvous contests can bring out a different side of people.

“What I really love about Superstar Spectacular is that it gives

amateur performers a chance to perform on a big stage,” she said.

“I think it gives them a chance to do something big with their art.”

She said she also likes that it’s not geared toward any particular age.

“This year we have performers everywhere from 12 to 45 years old. It’s really nice for all age ranges, that it’s not just a youth thing, but it’s for anyone looking to grow in their art form.”

She said this year’s 12-year old, Heidi Vallier, has been performing at the event for the last three years. Not only is the simple experience of being onstage a big boost for most people, the opportunity to receive feedback is helpful.

There are usually three to five judges. This year they include musicians Jona Barr, Rick Sward and Paris Pick, a previous Superstar winner. There’s also a representative from Yukon Energy

(which sponsors the event) on the panel.

Gillespie said judges are looking for originality in performances.

That could mean putting a unique spin on a cover of an existing song or it could mean writing and performing your own work.

“I think definitely just showing confidence on the stage, and your personality within the performance is key,” she said. “That and audience engagement.”

So far this year, she said there are 10 performers registered. (there are usually between 10 and 14 performers registered in advance of the event.)

Anyone can do this by filling out a form with a biography and a YouTube link, typically to the song they plan to perform.

Gillespie said the show doesn’t usually sell out the 150 seat Arts Centre, but if there’s a run on tickets, the venue would open up balcony seating to accommodate the overflow.

Though this is Gillespie’s first year organizing the Superstar competition, she already has ideas for how she might expand on the event in 2020. She’d like to host a concurrent visual art show (when Gillespie ran for queen, her platform was with Splintered Craft, advocating for youth and amateur art) in the lobby of the Yukon Arts Centre. It would just be for the night of the Superstar competition, so audience members could vote on the work as part of the event.

“But I don’t want to reinvent the wheel quite yet,” she said.

he Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous has been around since 1945 and a defining part of the winter festival has always been the Military.

The term “Sourdough” comes from a sour-tasting bread starter that’s made by fermenting dough through a natural process involving lactobacilli and yeast. Miners were known to bring it with them on journeys north and into the bush. The term has evolved to also define a Yukoner who has lived through a winter. This is traditionally marked by the freezing and thawing of the Klondike.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to interact with Yukoners. Come support this event with a lot of history to it! Everybody at JTFN is really excited for this year,” said Maj. Alexander Trousdale, detachment commander with the Joint Task Force North Detachment Yukon, Canadian Armed Forces.

However, Canada’s military presence in the North dates back to the Yukon Field Force in the 1890s.

The Canadian Forces Northern Area was founded in 1970 under the motto Custos Borealis, meaning “northern guardian” in Latin.

The force was later replaced in 2006 with JTFN. Trousdale said that Rendezvous is just a part of military life in the Yukon.

“It’s a great event. It gets you out of the house in the wintertime and the chance to interact with other Yukoners and the Canadian Armed Forces members that are here in the Territory,” he said.

This year JTFN is responsible for coordinating all of the Canadian Armed forces present at Rendezvous. Static displays this year will be ongoing at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre from Feb. 22 to 24. The Canadian Artillery Band is up from Edmonton and will be per-

forming at the KDCC all weekend.

“They’re a jazz-type band, but they do a variety of music,” said Trousdale. “It’s right close to all the events so [Yukoners will] be able to see us compete in the competitions.”

Originally from Ontario, Trousdale has been posted in the Yukon since being reassigned from ValCartier, Quebec in 2017. This will be his second Rendezvous experience. He said he enjoyed last year’s flour-packing event, where participants carry large sacks of flour as far as possible.

“It’s a very heavy rucksack. I think it got over 1,000 pounds at some point. I think I got to seven hundred and something. I could not believe how heavy it was,” he said. This year he’s looking forward to the community challenge.

Other military contingents involved in Rendezvous this year include the The 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (1 CRPG), Royal Canadian Artillery Band (RCA Band), Area Support Unit (North), HMCS WHITEHORSE, Naval Display Bus, 2 and 3 Canadian Forces Flight Training Schools (CFFTS), 2685 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and the 551 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron.

From My Mother’s Kitchen with Murray Martin

Desserts from the early 1950s

Guaranteed, there is no better dessert than a homemade dessert—especially if it’s from my mother’s or grandmother’s kitchen. No wonder my wife Lisa is a great cook, as she has access to these recipes from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s. So I guess this old redneck takes credit for these recipes of tasty desserts, as they were passed on to me. (PS: no doubt sleeping in the dog house tonight.)

TREAT FOR THE KIDS Ingredients: 4 cups rice krispies 1 cup 32% cream, whipped ½ cup liquid honey or maple syrup

1 egg, beaten ½ tsp. salt 1 ½ tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 ½ tsp. baking soda.

Method Combine flour, carrots, suet and raisins. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into greased 2 qt. pudding mold, set on rack in a covered kettle with enough boiling water to come halfway up sides of mold. Steam on top of a range for 5 hours, adding water if necessary.

Unmold and serve with sauce. Can be made several weeks ahead.

Steam 1 hour before serving.

Method: Combine all ingredients. Pile into sherbet glasses. Garnish with red cherries and serve as soon as possible. This will serve about 8 eager children.

TASTY STRAWBERRY MARLOW Ingredients: 25 marshmallows, quartered 1 cup hot milk ⅛ tsp. salt 1 cup 32% cream ¾ cup strawberries, crushed 3 tsp. fructose sugar Method Add marshmallows to hot milk and place in double boiler until marshmallows are melted. Add the salt to whipping cream, then whip. Turn into freezing tray and freeze 3 to 4 hours. Add berries, which have been standing covered with the fructose sugar. Chill and allow to stand until slightly thickened. Enjoy!

ROYAL PLUM PUDDING Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted 2 cups raw carrots, grated ¼ lb. ground suet 1 ¾ cups seeded raisins 6 tbsp. corn syrup 6 tbsp. molasses

Murray has a couple of recipes for oldstyle plum pudding JUST OLD-FASHIONED PLUM PUDDING Ingredients: 1 cup sugar 1 cup flour 2 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. Cinnamon ½ tsp. Nutmeg ¼ tsp. clove ¼ tsp. ginger 1 cup breadcrumbs 1 ½ tsp. ground suet ¼ lb. cut mixed peel 1 cup seedless raisins 1 cup currants ¼ lb. cut mixed fruit 6 eggs, beaten Mixed fruit juice, to moisten

Method Sift together sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda and spices. Add breadcrumbs and suet. Mix well. Add fruit and nuts, when thoroughly mixed. Beat eggs and add about 1 ½ cups of fruit juice (oranges, pineapple, etc.), more if needed to moisten.

Pack in cans. Cover with greased brown paper. Bring to a boil and simmer for 3 hours. Store in a cold place. Simmer for one hour before serving. Serve hot with preferred sauce.

Ingredients (suggested sauce) ½ cup butter Pinch of salt 2 egg whites, beaten until stiff ½ cup brown sugar ¾ cup cream, whipped with a little vanilla Method Cream the butter, sugar and salt. Fold egg whites into creamed mixture. Set bowl in hot water and heat through. Cool in refrigerator.

Just prior to serving, add whipped cream and vanilla.

SOUR CREAM FUDGE Ingredients: 3 cups brown sugar 1 cup sour cream 1 tsp. vanilla ½ cup butter 1 cup nuts, chopped Method Combine sugar and sour cream.

Boil to soft-ball stage. Remove from heat and add vanilla and butter. Beat until mixture begins to granulate and then add the nuts.

Pour into a 8 x 8 pan.

OLD-FASHIONED CARAMEL ROASTED POPCORN Ingredients: 1 cup popcorn, popped 1 cup brown sugar ½ cup butter ¼ cup corn syrup

½ tsp. baking soda ¼ tsp. vanilla Method Pop 1 cup of kernels. Pour into in a large bowl. While stirring gently over medium-high heat, add the following to a sauce pan: 1 cup brown sugar, ½ cup butter, ¼ cup corn syrup. Heat mixture until it bubbles, and then boil gently for 5 minutes. Remove from stove, add ½ tsp. baking soda and stir well. Now add ¼ tsp. vanilla.

Pour hot syrup, gradually, over popped corn while stirring gently. Transfer this into a large uncovered roasting pan. Roast in a 225℉ oven for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Keep in a covered container.

SIMPLE OLD-FASHIONED RHUBARB PIE Ingredients: 3 cups flour 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 2 cups rhubarb, cubed 1 recipe plain pastry

–Traditional Proverb Method Sift flour and sugar together, add egg and beat thoroughly, then add rhubarb. Bake uncovered in hot oven ( 425℉) for 10 minutes.

Reduce temperature to 350℉ and bake for for 35 minutes longer.

This will yield a 1- by 9-inch pie.

PRESERVING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE Ingredients: 1 large open field and a brook ½-dozen children Stones 2 or 3 dogs Method Mix the children and dogs well.

Put them in the field, stirring occasionally. Pour the brook over the stones. Sprinkle flowers in the field. Spread a blue sky over all and bake in the sun. When browned, set to cool in the flowing brook.

hen it comes to the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous lip sync competition, you might have to bring more of an A-game than you’d have to bring to a contest where you actually sing. Somehow, lip sync competitions have come to attract a level of commitment to theatrics usually reserved for Broadway.

“It’s just fun,” said Marjie Cowell, one of the organizers of this year’s show, which takes place at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC) on at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22. “It gives adults a chance to be fun and goofy. Everybody loves having their three minutes onstage. And not actually having to sing the song, it makes it that much less intimidating.”

So much less intimidating that you can actually feel pretty awesome dressing up in head-to-toe spandex to sing Bonnie Tyler’s I Need a Hero, the way some performers did in 2018 (and won the people’s choice award in the process).

Cowell said this year’s show has a full 12 acts, chosen from among the winners at preliminary lip sync competitions that took place in Whitehorse in November, December and January.

In addition to the entertainment provided by those acts, which range in size from soloists to groups of four, classic Rendezvous characters will be onstage.

Cowell, who is new to organizing the event, said that even having seen the lip sync spectacle last year didn’t prepare her for the degree of preparation performers put into their routines. She said people keep contacting her to talk about technical cues and coordination.

She said the judges this year aren’t all confirmed, but she knows she definitely has Antoinette, owner of Antoinette’s Restaurant and Liberal MLA Paolo Gallina.

“I think the big thing is they want to see you moving your lips to the songs, but also your creativity and your approach. Jus to have fun with it,” Cowell said.

ikki Quocksister was still booking mainstage performers for Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous the week before the festival’s kick-off, but, after six years of being in charge of the stage, she was pretty calm about the last-minute confirmations.

“I find that part of the beauty of Rendezvous is the struggle,” she said. “When things are too easy, is it really a Yukon thing?”

And with the mainstage performances taking place indoors this year, one of the most difficult pieces of the Rendezvous puzzle is off her plate – trying to figure out how to keep everyone comfortable in an outdoor tent.

The cold isn’t always the main concern – though a concert at 30 below needs more than just a couple heat lamps. Believe it or not, sometimes Rendezvous has the opposite problem. If it’s even a little bit warmer, the combination of weather and dancing bodies can make the mainstage tent a gooey, wall-sweating mess. So moving indoors will be a bonus in terms of temperature regulation, “(Being inside) is definitely a change and I hope that people embrace it,” said Quocksister, noting that Yukoners are a pretty adaptable bunch, and she thinks the move to the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre is going to be one they’re excited about.

“It may be the way of the future or maybe we’ll go back,” she said. “It can’t hurt to try.”

Some of the performers that have confirmed for the mainstage shows, which take place from Friday, Feb. 22 to Sunday, Feb. 24, include local acts such as Paris Pick and the Pricks, the Midnight Sons, Shagadelica and Roxx Hunter.

There’s also going to be a lot of dancing, including the Rendezvous debut for the junior can-can line, which will appear along with the standard can-can line.

Quocksister is also excited to have the Whitehorse Chamber Choir, which is something new for the festival. Another brand-new addition, not just to Rendezvous, but to the Yukon’s musical landscape is the Kwanlin Dün First Nation Traditional Song and Dance group. Quocksister said she’s excited to have booked the group, which was established in 2018.

On top of that, there will be performances from standard Rendezvous favourites including the Snowshoe Shufflers, as well as a diversity of music from the allcity jazz band, Man from El Dorado, Swing Street and the Royal Canadian Artillery Soul Band Orchestra. The weekend will even see its own supergroup when Fiddelium – a B.C.-based band – appears onstage with the Yukon’s Fiddleheads, creating, for one day only, a 40-piece fiddle band.

The performances will be emceed by a handful of hosts (some yet-to-be-confirmed) including MP Larry Bagnell, city of Whitehorse councillor Jan Stick, musician Rick

Sward and more.

Quocksister said the daytime events, which run from 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. to about 5 p.m., depending on the day, won’t be licensed, but the evening events will be. These include the lip sync competition and the queen crowning.

1) Cook cranberries in water till soft 2) Food process till seeds are incorporated 3) add onions, vinegar, sugar and spices (I also add diced dried apricots to my recipe) 4)Boil till mixture thickens 5) Immediately pour into into sterilized canning jars leaving 1/4 inch headspace 6) Wipe jar rims and cover with lids 7) Process for 10 minutes in boiling water bath

Remembering a friend

Looking at privilege through a different lens Carey Marshall

I

was driving by the Whitehorse courthouse the other day and it made me remember a warm sunny day in 1985 in Inuvik.

A customer came into my auto parts store to buy a gizmo he was looking for. I presumed he was just another dumb truck driver. (I’m a truck driver, I’m allowed to say that.) Before he purchased the gizmo, he said my store had a lot of neat things, and they seemed to be priced a little better than Whitehorse, so he was going to look around for a few minutes to see if there was anything else he might need.

“So, you’re from the Yukon?” I asked.

“Yes, I just hauled up a load of freight and now I’m headed back to Whitehorse,” he replied.

When he said he was from the Yukon, it reminded me of a political news item from the Yukon, which had to have been a major story, for us to have heard about it on the other side of the mountain.

I asked him if he knew about the story.

He did, and filled me in with the precise details, as if the story had happened to him.

I didn’t expect such a thorough explanation from a truck driver.

“How come you know so much about this story?” I asked.

“I’m an MLA in the Yukon legislature,” he replied.

I didn’t think I heard him right.

“Do you mean you are an elect-

ed politician?” I asked.

He then told me he had been a cabinet minister in the Yukon government. He was fairly young, so this guy made an impression on me—a real politician who actually did real work.

I asked him a few more dumb questions and then he was on his way.

He had left me with a view that was upbeat and optimistic.

Around 30 minutes later, I went to the plumbing shop on the south side of town. Just as I came out of the plumbing shop, my new friend passed by on the highway and we gave each other a big ol’ wave.

Over the rest of the day, I told some of my customers the upbeat story about my political friend with a real job.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t tell my rosy story for long.

The next morning around 10 a.m., I got the bad news. The Dempster Highway near James Creek had developed a sinkhole.

The sun was shining in my new friend’s eyes. He crashed into the sinkhole and was killed.

After the shock wore off, I realized that I was likely one of the last people to see him alive.

I think almost everyone who was living in the Yukon at that time has probably figured out that

I’m writing about Andy Philipsen.

The courthouse is named after him.

In my younger years, I thought that to be a privileged person, you had to be born into money or have made it big somehow. Today, after some thought, I would bet that most Yukoners who knew Andy would say I was privileged that

day, when I got the opportunity to wave to Andy one last time.

Carey Marshall is from Whitehorse and has lived on both sides of the mountain north of 60 for almost 50 years.

Colours Wars wraps up the fun activities on Rendezvous weekend

n the midst of Sourdough Sams, tattoo competitions, and beard and leg hair-growing contests, Yukon kids need a place to call their own during Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. Kidsfest, organized by the Boys and Girls Club of Yukon (BGCY), is the hub for kids to have a good time. This year, it’s, located in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre (KDCC).

BGCY’s involvement is a natural fit for Kidsfest, as staff are trained and prepared to deliver great programming to Yukon kids.

“Boys and Girls Club is an in-kind sponsor, providing staff and gifts totalling $10,000,” said Lindsay Cornell, executive director of BGCY. “The sponsorship comes from our partnership around the Sourdough Sam Date Auction that takes place in January.”

Each day, there will be programming organized to keep kids entertained and enjoying the spirit of Rendezvous. Each day, facepainting will available all day.

There will also be a small barbecue organized each day as a BGCY fundraiser.

Special “little people” challenges will also be featured over the course of the weekend, so kids can experience some of the grownup Rendezvous challenges that are usually only for adults. Friday afternoon will feature a mini flour pull. Sunday will feature a snow carving and sculpting event.

The event will feature a few other activities, including short

travaganza that promises to leave you painted blue, red, pink and yellow - and probably more. Never fear, parents! The cornstarch and food dye mixture used to create the colours is non-toxic and washes off easily. Kids can enjoy themselves and get as messy as possible, without long-term mess.

The colours are stored in envelopes in boxes around the designated area, aka the battleground.

Participants can collect colours before returning into the main area where they can douse friends and opponents with the rainbow.

Pa r t i c i p a n t s can sign up at the location, but most activities are on a first-come, firstserved basis, so it’s probably a good idea to keep track of the schedule, just in case something catches your eye.

Kids get into it at Kidsfest dog sled rides from Muktuk Adventures on Friday and Saturday, a children and youth jousting competition, and the grande finale of the weekend, Colour Wars.

aving won over judges at competitions around Canada and the United States with his uniquely Canadian style, Ontario born fiddle player Shane Cook is coming to Whitehorse this Rendezvous for his first gig north of 60. “I’m expecting it to be cold.

I just went out and bought a new pair of long johns,” said Cook.

Cook’s musical career jump started when he won a U.S national fiddle championship in Idaho.

“It was a blind competition so the judges were in a totally separate room. I had dedicated a big part of my life to Texas swing style music, which is what they look for in the US national fiddle championship. I guess I managed to sneak through somehow despite being Canadian and it’s funny because they put an end to the blind competition after that,” he said. While his win ruffled some feathers in Idaho, he said it opened a lot of new doors for him by getting him noticed among his peers. I got to meet so many of my fiddle heroes. Nobody was more surprised than me when that happened,” he said.

With deep roots in Dorchester, Ontario, playing fiddle is a family tradition in the Cook family. “My dad was a fiddler and there was a long line of fiddlers before him down in southern Ontario. I grew up playing that same type of fiddle that my Dad plays,” said Cook. The style that he grew up in is sometimes referred to as “Ottawa Valley” fiddling and draws on a variety of influences from Quebecois folk to Scotch-Irish, Swing and Bluegrass. Cook says this makes it easy for him to transition between. “I flirt between all of these worlds,” he said.

Cook is especially looking forward to working with the Fiddleheads, who many of us know as an

especially talented group of Yukon youth. The Fiddleheads are opening for Cook at both shows, along with their guests Fiddelium from Nanaimo, British Columbia. “I’m looking forward to getting together and working with some of the kids there, giving fiddle and stepdance classes between concerts.

I grew up going to a lot of fiddle contests and festivals with my dad and my brother... So it’s nice to continue that. There’s something that happens when you get together with musicians of a like mind. They have a way of bringing something out of you,” he said.

Cook is mentioned in the Canadian Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame as one of the “finest fiddlers in the world today.” He’s a Western University grad living in London, Ontario.

He said that the majority of the tunes he’ll be playing are made with step-dancing in mind and hopes to convey that to the audience. “It’s joyous music it’s almost all dance music from different traditions... I hope that anybody who comes to the will leave feeling brighter after.”

The concert happens at the Yukon Arts Centre Mainstage Feb 21 and 22. Tickets for the event can be found on Shane Cook’s website or through the Yukon Arts Centre.
