f there is anybody out there who recognizes what is in these pictures, please step forward. Recently, I found myself looking more intensively at lichens and mosses. As there are no blooming wildflowers in the midst of winter and as there happened to be very little snow in December 2018, they caught my interest. Lichens and mosses are beautiful enough in themselves, but I like to know their names and, as it turns out, I can’t find anybody who knows more than the basics. The basics would be something like, “well this is moss, and this is a lichen, and then there is reindeer moss, which really is a lichen called cladonia. If your knowledge goes beyond that, it would be of great help. And if you are a kid who likes to study biology, oh, I would love it if you want to study to be a bryologist (mosses and liverworts) or a lichenologist, as there are none

that I know of in the Yukon.I talked to Bruce Bennett, with the Yukon Conservation Data Centre (CDC). At the moment, Denny Bohmer, also at the CDC, is updating the CDC list of all lichens reported to occur in the Yukon (not that there is necessarily anybody around to recognize them). Experts in the past have collected lichens and DNA tested them. Bennett also told me there is a research project at Duke University in North Carolina to look at the genetics and DNA of peltigera that grow here in the Yukon. Peltigera is a pelt lichen. Pelt lichen might be important for caribou. It is known that caribou eat caribou moss, which are lichen in the cladonia family. Bennett suggested that pelt lichen might also be important to their diet, as it apparently
has a higher protein content. When we, as Yukoners, want to know more about our lichen, more than they already know at Environment Yukon, there is no local expert to turn to. There are some bryologists knowledgeable in Yukon species (I think there are 800 known mosses here), but they are mainly experts outside of the territory. For example, Dr. Terry McIntosh, a professor at the University of British Columbia who specializes in bryophytes and arid land vascular plants, has been up here at least five seasons to look at mosses. A man like McIntosh is invaluable because studying from books or computers only goes so far. I can read about a certain plant cont’d on page 3 ...

many times, or study it for hours, but when someone points and tells me what it is, learning happens in an instant. I now might be able to recognize that plant when I see it again. For example, it was Bohmer, by means of iNaturalist.ca, who explained to me what grows underneath the spruce trees around my house. The thick carpet of moss, with its reddish spine and feathery green, is called Pleurozium schreberi. And when one knows what is normally out there, only then can one recognize when something is different, or new. For example, I bet the Yukon has a lot of unknown species. But where to start? The
CDC does have many lists, plant lists, animal lists, and lists for different areas. All are accessible to the public if you ask. What I am also always interested in is the edibility of plants. I already know some lichen are edible and I have a jar of usnea, the beard lichen that hangs from tree branches. But I forgot what it is for. Walking to the kitchen now, toward a shelf full of jars of wild herbs that I collected and dried, I take some Masonhalea richardsonii and chew on it. Mmmm, delicious. An acquired taste though.

eyond the windows of my study/greenhouse, the temperature is still in deficit mode and falling. Another skiff of snow arrived overnight—the dry, fat, fluffy kind I have no trouble ignoring. It will either blow away, or it will not. It doesn’t need my help deciding. Here, as elsewhere, we’re on the January/February cusp. For all practical purposes, that means gardening season is still a few months off. By “gardening season”, I don’t mean the get-out-there-andshove-seeds-into-the-dirt season; I mean the plan-for-perfectionbut-prepare-for-disappointment season. The seeds for a fresh batch of indoor herbs have already been deployed. Grow lights are at the ready. Last year’s containers have been duly sterilized (most of them, anyway). Mental maps, calendars and paper grids occupy my daydreams. But it’s still winter, dammit. In Australia, I’d be harvesting like a Tasmanian devil. Here, I can do little but fidget and wait. I’ve thumbed through the partial packets of leftover seed from last year. I’ve checked expiry dates, and tossed out radishes, Sweet Williams, sweet alyssum, arugula, and scarlet runners I can’t be bothered with this year.
In a burst of manic energy while avoiding various in-laws over the holidays, I even immersed myself in hours of YouTube vids on everything from how to cure blossom end rot, to how to maintain a giant tub of fat and sassy red wigglers in the basement.

Mother Earth News, or from my reliable old pals at the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Truth be told, I owe the Almanac folks a huge debt for the decades’ worth of free advice they’ve given me about how to predict weather trends according to the plumage of fuzzy caterpillars and the like. I faithfully save every email they send each week, with tips on everything from when to divide and transplant bunching onions, to how to can salmon without risking a sudden and embarrassing death. Someday, I may even open and read those emails. Every now and then though, a fella hankers to try something new. If only there were an all-Canadian magazine that could explain everything from how to brine a suckling pig, to how to fertilize your hubbard squash. We could call it Aerosmith, or Harrowsmith, or something. And store the back issues beside the Whole Earth Catalog, a shelf above the Maurice Grenville Kains classic, Five Acres and Independence, and all 14 volumes of the iconic Foxfire books. Just planting a seed for thought here, folks.
I’ve debated long and hard about whether to order an All New Square Foot Gardening guide from

T
hese days they are referred to as a “base layer” and are usually made from some very scientific-sounding material and come with a big, obvious logo to satisfy status-seekers. “Plastic” is another name for what they are made of. Some of these may work while you are out in the cold, but I have found most of them uncomfortable, warm and sweaty when I come inside. Pile and fleece are also a type of plastic, but if it’s quite cold, they are hard to beat for a synthetic and aren’t as uncomfortably warm indoors. Of course, whatever material is used, this layer should have zip openings to vent unnecessary heat. A minimum is the short zipper at the neck, but a full front zipper and underarm zippers are better. Tops should be more than long enough to tuck into the waistband of the bottoms. The bottoms usually come without zipper openings, but some higher-quality (more expensive) bottoms have a half circle zipper opening on the butt so any gender can take care of personal business. When I first arrived in the Yukon in 1977, “fishnet” long johns were very common. The netting left an airspace next to your skin and they were actually quite effective. Sadly they were 100 per
cent cotton and, as a result, were damp from perspiration almost all the time. Any cotton against your skin will become damp and may bring on hypothermia. Polypropylene was, and still is, quite popular. It dries very quickly and works well as underwear, gloves, hats, socks or mittliners. It has also been relatively inexpensive. It has at least two negative aspects. Some brands provide you with the worst body odour you’ve ever experienced and, like all plastics, it melts and sticks to your flesh in a fire situation such as a tent fire, or an accident with an airplane. Silk is very good to use against your skin. It comes in various weights in tops, bottoms, socks, hats, etc. It works well to keep the heat in and is also fairly comfortable to wear after coming indoors. The lighter weight silks are fairly fragile and are easy to tear or run, especially at the front of the knees. Wool is probably at the top of the list as far as being versatile and dependable. If you can bear it next to your skin, coarse wool or nylon blends work well and are less expensive than high-tech stuff. Put it on over silk or even polypro to remove the “itch factor.”
We
Merino wool garments are expensive but very effective and do not itch at all against your skin. Merino comes with different brand names and also in various blends. The best is 100 per cent merino. It is a tough product and can be worn indoors comfortably in most situations. It rarely needs to be washed and does not cause you to smell badly. It can be washed on the “gentle” cycle in cold water and laid out on a flat surface to dry. Pound for pound, down is the best insulator for clothing and sleeping bags. One downside is that down loses the ability to insulate when it gets wet. A the previously mentioned materials retain that capability when wet. They also also allow for some air circulation (breathability) while down is usually in a double-walled nylon sleeve that prevents any air circulation. Richard’s Tire Tips
Do you have a tire
that you have been airing up every so often?
Did you know that if you have one or more low tires, your fuel economy will be significantly decreased? Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Furthermore when you operate your vehicle with a low tire it may cause permanent damage to the tire causing it to be prematurely removed from service due to irreparable damage.

Cream of curried cauliflower soup

f you’re looking to make this simple soup vegan, simply swap the tin of evaporated milk for a tin of coconut milk, and the butter for coconut (or olive) oil. You can also beef up this soup by adding all sorts of hearty vegetables— think carrots and cabbage rather than bell peppers or zucchini. Any vegetable that can stand up to a bit of vigorous
simmering will do well in this soup. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS
❑ 1 tablespoon butter ❑ 1 small onion, finely chopped
❑ 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
❑ 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
❑ 2 tablespoons yellow curry powder
Chop that cauliflower
Onion, garlic, ginger

The white channel gravels Ancient rivers with a gold lining ..... by Hugh Copland
Part Seven
PHOTOS: Hugh Copland
As the story goes, the early gold rush stampeders found all the creeks staked when they arrived. The Sourdoughs already there jokingly told the newcomers to go to the top of the hills to find gold. One of those hills became known as Cheechako Hill just below the junction of Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks. Within the gravels near the top of the hills was one of the best pay streaks in the Klondike.
Washed White Channel Gravels
T
hese high level gravels were deposited by a river system three to five million years ago. Due to the abundance of white quartz pebbles and cobbles within it, they became known as the White Channel Gravels. About 250 million years ago in the area that would become the Klondike, volcanic activity deposited light coloured quartz rich (siliceous) rocks. These were later metamorphosed by heat and pressure into what is now called the Klondike Schist. Schist is a metamorphic rock that has a layered look. The metamorphism remobilized the original minerals into a linear texture. Fast forward to between 20 and 50 million years ago. The climate was five to ten degrees Celsius warmer than it is today. It was relatively dry as well. This allowed the Klondike Schist to break down quicker than it does today. The area resembled a relatively flat dry plain with a few isolated hills. You can get a feel for what it looked like by driving along the Top of the World Highway. The tops of all the ridges are approximately the same height. Just imagine that the creek valleys are not there. There were some higher points, where the rocks were more resistant. Quite often many ridges would radiate from these higher areas. In the Klondike these features were named domes. King Solomon Dome at the top of Hunker, Upper Bonanza, Quartz, Dominion, and Sulphur Creeks is a great example. About five million years ago a couple of significant events started. The climate in the Klondike area had starting cooling but was still probably two to three degrees warmer than today and was getting wetter. There also was accelerated uplifting of the ground. This uplift was from tectonic activity from plate collisions in the
White Channel Gravels, American Hill, Bonanza Creek Gulf of Alaska area. This uplift was responsible for the St. Elias Mountains in southwest Yukon as well. The cooling wetter climate resulted in streams and rivers developing. One of the features of tectonic uplift is accelerated erosion. The watercourses started to erode faster to try and maintain their original configuration. The lower levels of the White Channel Gravels have been dated as forming about five million years ago. The increased amount of eroded material could not all be carried away by the creeks and rivers. Braided rivers formed that had several shifting channels and lots of gravel bars. A good example of this today would be the Donjek River and many others in the Kluane area. The ample supply of eroded material from the mountains starts dropping out in the river bed when they reach the lower sloping ground. You can see this where the rivers cross the Alaska Highway. In the Klondike some braided river systems developed. The schist that had been broken down by the earlier warmer climate started to erode away quickly. Most of the fine softer material from the decomposed rock was washed away leaving the harder quartz rich rock to accumulate. The White Channel Gravels can be over 40 metres thick and have
been historically divided into two main units. The most visible difference between the two is that the upper gravels are stained a yellowish tint from surficial soils. Where did all the gold come from? There are some gold bearing quartz veins present in the Klondike Schist today. They are not large or high grade gold deposits but they do exist. The best known of these is the Lone Star. Gold bearing quartz veins occur on the ridge between Upper Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks. It was actually mined in the early 1900’s for a short period but was not profitable. The amount of placer gold taken from the Klondike area is estimated to between 400 and 800 million grams (12 to 25 million ounces). A hard rock deposit today with that amount of contained gold would be a large world-class mine. Modern sub-microscopic investigations have proven that gold from the quartz veins is identical to that found in nearby placers. There is however, a significant amount of gold recovered in the creeks that is not the same as the gold in the veins. The Klondike Schist has fine grained gold disseminated throughout that is not related to quartz veins. The theory is that the placer has come from weathering and concentra-

White Channel Gravels, Australian Hill, Hunker Creek tion of large volumes of eroded schist as well as the quartz veins. The richest portions of the White Channel Gravels are along the bedrock contact and one or two metres above it. The schist trapped gold because it was rough with lots of projections and cracks for it to concentrate. Gold is heavy and it works its way downwards. Studies in the Klondike, California, and New Zealand have shown that placer gold usually has not travelled horizontally very far from its original source, maybe in the order of tens of metres. This explains why placers just downstream of known hard rock gold areas are usually rich. There were many good claims around Grand Forks, just downstream of the Lone Star. The earliest modern glaciation, about 2.5 million years ago triggered the end of the White Channel Gravels. Although the Klondike escaped being covered by ice it was cold and no water was flowing. The White Channel Gravels were preserved. In the warmer periods between subsequent glacial events, water started flowing again. New creeks started eroding the landscape. They first cut down through the White Channel Gravels concentrating the gold further still. This second concentration process is why the richest ground is in the

modern creeks. The whole story of the White Channel Gravels and how it got its gold is not finished. Geologists with the Yukon Geological Survey (YGS) and the mining industry continue to investigate the mysteries of the area. The YGS recently discovered that a gold bearing gravel bed near Hunker Creek may be twice as old as the White Channel Gravels. If you want to read more on the White Channel Gravels look at R.G. McConnell’s 1907 Geological Survey of Canada “Report on Gold Values in the Klondike High Level Gravels”. It is a very informative and readable report with a great map. You can find it at: http:// publications.gc.ca/collections/ collection_2017/rncan-nrcan/ M41-1-3-1907-eng.pdf. Next time you are in Dawson City, and the season is right, spend a day to check out the White Channel Gravels. Drive the Bonanza Creek-Upper BonanzaKing Solomon Dome-Hunker Creek loop. The Government of Yukon has a number of excellent interpretative panels along the way. The White Channel Gravels can be seen in many locations: above the Callison Industrial area outside of Dawson, three kilometres up the Bonanza Creek Road, further upstream between Claim 33 and Grand Forks, and the lower sections of Hunker Creek. Be sure to stop at Dredge #4 National Historic Site, Discovery Claim National Historic Site, and the Klondike Visitors Association Free Claim#6 while you are out in the goldfields.

Unlike previous years, the new Rendezvous Kick Off also allows for a greater variety of entertainment to be on display in a single event. It may be the only time where you get to see all your favourite YSR characters under the one roof. The Snowshoe Shufflers will show off their incredible moves and the Sourdough Sam contestants will bring all their charm. Don’t forget your garter at home folks, or the Keystone Kops may just put you in jail! Of course it wouldn’t be a Rendezvous event without royalty so, keep an eye out for the 2018 Rendezvous Queen, flanked by her Company of the White Wolf Royal Guard, as well as our 2019 Quest for the Crown candidates. Finally, in keeping with tradition, we promise there will be
even more high kicks than ever before. The YSR Air North CanCan line will be performing their entire 2019 programme. For the first time in Rendezvous history, we have partnered with the Northern Lights School of Dance to bring you the inaugural YSR Junior CanCan line. Be prepared to see them out and about this festival season alongside the YSR Air North CanCan line. “YSR is very excited to have our first ever junior can-can Line,” said “Calamity Kate” Davidson, a four-year veteran of the line. “When Christina from NLSD offered to sponsor and choreograph a junior can-can line, we thought it was a great opportunity for youth to be able to participate in a longtime Rendezvous tradition, the can-can. They will be performing at most of YSR’s daytime events and evening ticketed shows, along with making appearances on the main performance stage over the weekend. They will also be doing the school performances this year.” Like previous years, tickets to all Rendezvous events will be
available on the night at a special price. The 2019 event tickets went on sale in early December with early bird pricing. The Sourdough Rendezvous Society decided to extend the early bird pricing, so the Rendezvous Kick Off is your final chance to snap up tickets at the early bird price. The Rendezvous Kick Off is on Friday, Feb. 8 at the Westmark Ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Entry is by donation. For all our 2019 volunteers, and anyone still interested in volunteering, we are hosting a volunteer meet-and-greet before the kick off, so come down to the Westmark Whitehorse at 5 p.m. This will be a great opportunity to connect with your fellow volunteers and to learn about what it means to be a Rendezvous volunteer. Saskrita “Six Shooter Sas” Shrestha is the operations manager for Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. Individuals interested in volunteering can contact organizers at info@yukonrendezvous.com.

The Delta Rambler with Dennis Allen
‘The greatest living history in the North’
Dennis sidled up to a good story for the value price of six bits the liquor, so I had a general sense of the urgency to get something cold down the hatch. His resume read like a Louis L’Amour novel. He’d wrangled wild horses for Reg Kesler, back in the 60s, the same Kesler that Corb Lund sings about in “Buckin’ Horse Rider.” Then he’d thumbed north and got a job as a deckhand on the tugs, with the Streeper Brothers in Fort Nelson, running up and down the Liard River. He’d also roughnecked on the drilling rigs in the High Arctic. He polished off his beer and he was still in the mid 70s. So, naturally, I ordered him another draught and he me took on a journey from the rodeo shoots of Montana, through the badlands of Alberta and clean up into the Mackenzie River Basin.
I sat with Henry a good part of two hours before I had to mosey on. I left him with a ten-spot and wished him well. You may have noticed from my earlier rambling that I’ve got a penchant for the past. Some people accuse me of avoiding the present because I’m always talking about the “good old days.” But you gotta take into consideration that I grew up when a guy could buy a Pep Chew for a nickel and a can of pop for 15 cents. I also had the great privilege of being apprenticed by some of the greatest storytellers to come out of the North—my father, Victor; and my uncle, Abe Okpik—legendary raconteurs in their own right. You may also notice I’ve got a hard-on for cheechakos. FYI, a
cheechako is a smart-aleck greenhorn. (Ed note: Cheechako in the Yukon now usually refers to a newcomer who has not yet spent a full winter in the territory.) You see them walking around town with five-hundred-dollar boots and perfect nails. They wouldn’t know the business end of an axe if you introduced them. I like hardworking people who can hold their own, especially up here where the cold and isolation can drive a man to drink. Speaking of drinking ... I never fault a guy for carrying a mickey of rum. You can thaw out a carburetor with a splash of rum if your carb ever freezes up in the winter. You can also close up a wound on your wheel dog’s paw with cold rum. I don’t mean to pick on any-
body, but it just gets my gullet when a good man gets ignored in this fast world we’re living in. These guys got stories by the boatload; yet people just walk on by, stand on the corner and ignore some of the greatest living history in the North. With so much information flying through the air with the internet, you think a guy would gain a bit of sense from it all. But that ain’t the truth. Cause you gotta live it to tell it. And you gotta tell it to keep it alive, even if it’s just a memory. Dennis Allen is an awardwinning filmmaker, forlorn songwriter and hopeless storyteller. He’s the only guy he knows who’s never seen the Stones.

I
was walking through downtown Edmonton, the other day, when an old-timer in curled-up cowboy boots saddled up to me and bummed six bits off of me for a glass of draught. I was so happy to hear that particular vernacular that I almost gave him a hug. I grew up in Inuvik, N.W.T., where commerce was discussed in bucks and bits. I miss hearing that language, so I offered to buy my newfound friend a cold glass myself. We slid into the nearest watering hole, where he must have been a regular ’cause he slid right into his favourite chair like it was choreographed. I flipped him two bits and nodded towards the jukebox. He paid the piper and, without even looking, punched in B17, “Bartender’s Blues” by the late great George Jones. I ordered my friend a draught, and a coke for myself. The barmaid sounded like she’d just smoked a bale of tobacco when she called me “Sugar.” This is my kinda joint, I said to myself. I told my friend nothing’s for free and that he’d have to tell me his story. He took a good pull on the cold draught, which must have loosened up his esophagus because he began to ramble. As a writer, I’m always looking for material and I find the best material in people who’ve been through the wringer a time or two. It don’t do me no good to talk to cheechakos, so I steer clear away from them. Turns out Henry (not his real name—to protect the innocent) got burned out of his trapline up in Anzac, a few years ago, and has never been able to get back on his feet. He sold what gear he had left, and thumbed a ride to the city where the bright lights blindsided him. He figured he’d get work as a skinner for Ken Belcourt Furs, but Ken closed up shop after all them Greenpeace hippies blew out the price of fur. So he roams from here to there looking for something to take the edge off his days. I had my own battle with

Get to know your sourdoughs
Some of the Sams responding to this year’s Call for the Cup by Dave Blottner
T
he Whitehorse Motors Sourdough Sams—what are they about? Every year we hear about these Sourdough Sams, this “Call for the Cup,” and that the search for the “primo Yukon male” is on again, but what does any of that really mean? I managed to catch up with lead Sam coordinator, or, as he’s known, “The George” Time Bomb Tamara, to get to the bottom of what this tradition is all about. I was surprised by how much I didn’t know about this Yukon tradition. The Sourdough Sam Competition began in 1985 and was hosted by none other than Lake Laberge Marj. Over its 34year run, the contest has taken many forms, but always keeps a core ideal at its heart. It is a chance for local fellows to come together and put on a series of shows that raises money to support the family-friendly side of Rendezvous. When looking into the numbers, we found last year that the Sourdough Sams raised over $7,000. Time Bomb told me that anyone can be a Sam. That’s the magic of it. “Most people think that the Sams are young college kids or something, but that’s usually not the case,” he said. “These are family men with careers who are looking for a fun and exciting way to give back.” This year’s Sams are a diverse group. Each has created a character. Here’s what we know so far:
Russell the Love Muscle (Russell):
It is written in The New Chestament that one day a Sam will appear who brings gainz to all those who listen to his word. That Sam was born Russell the Love Muscle, son of the Mountain and The Bearded Lady. Conceived in The Iron Temple and birthed in a squat rack, The Love Muscle was blessed by the Allspotter himself. However, The Love Muscle was snatched away by the trickster Broki, and was fooled into following the path of many false gains for many years until he discovered the Book of Brodin. The Love Muscle quickly realized the error of his ways, and began to pray at the Iron Temple daily, performing
was time for a little break from fighting mutants and cyborgs, to spend a little time back home and show you all how talented and sexy I am. I’m a glimmering gem in a burlap sack, a sparkling stone under a shag carpet. I am a true Canadian diamond in the rough, nasty skin of an old avocado. My super healing powers allow me to metabolize vast amounts of alcohol, giving me a huge advantage over other Sams. Huge, like that Russell the Jugger Muscle. I’d let him rip me in half.
ShaneSaw Sam the Lumberman (Shane):
Shanesaw Sam the Lumberman has emerged from isolation in the deep forest. He has come to rip it up even though he knows PHOTO: courtesy of Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous that the beavers will be all over his wood, because that is what a Shanesaw does.
This year’s Sams are ready to entertain

He felt the Swoley Spirit enter him with each rep and, like a diamond in the rough, he slowly carved his once soft body into a body that may one day enter the blessed halls of Swolehalla. To this day, the Love Muscle continues his journey to bring awareness of the word of Brodin. This is why he steps forward as a Sam.
Sam-Pool (Evan):

Violence 101
PART FIVE OF SIX
The five foundations of violence by Serge Harvey-Gauthier
The information regarding the Cycle of Violence in my past articles, including its three categories (affective, organizational/professional, and social) and the four forms of violence (psychological, physical, sexual and financial) would not be complete without an overview of the five principles that “construct” this phenomenon. These foundations are essential to understanding violence which, far from being complex, always comes down to the simple concepts that I have shared with you over the last few weeks. By gaining this knowledge, you should never feel crushed by the horror of violence—in all its forms—which one might encounter nearby or from afar. Further, the Yukon possesses excellent support resources for victims of all forms of violence (see previous articles). Let us now discuss the five foundations of violence.
FIVE PRINCIPLES
The following principles are generally accepted by the majority of experts and are unavoidable in all information or treatment of the phenomenon. 1. Violence is chosen by the individual and constructed by society with the goal of controlling or dominating the victim-s (Schechter, NY, 1982, p. 108). How? Through continued wage inequality for women. Through a culture that glamourizes force and control as ways to resolve frustration. Through many aggressors’ impunity to human suffering (residential schools, dictatorships, legalized arms sales). Through pornography and international media that operates continuously without any memory of the past, and which prefers to normalize visible acts of
Violence always hides itself within themes such as love, kindness, common sense, skill, or tradition that Serge calls “gift-wrapping”
violence. In this sense, violence is a lifelong collection of non-decisions made in response to events by a person whose lack of desire to take charge is a constant theme. Next, several such people gather, either online or in person in supremacist groups such as ISIL or others. In the United States alone, the Southern Poverty Law Center monitors 201 per cent more hate groups now than it did in 1998. 2. Secondly, there are multiple origins and causes of violence that stem from individuals, dysfunctional families, oppressive systems such as patriarchy, colonialism, racism, heterosexism (Damant et Flynn, QC, 2013), and homophobia (Dorais, QC, 1994). A powerful superiority idea (Strader, 1979) maintains everything like a spider web—a simplistic concept generated by the pride of some people 3. Next, violence is integrated behaviour as a means of resolution when one’s negative aggression is not managed. Violent behaviour is the result of learning how to remove advantages or to “develop one’s frustration, disarray, need for control and powerlessness” (Philippe, 1991) [translated]. 4. The fourth principle is that as much as anger is a normal, unexpected and not chosen emotion we encounter in life, violence is abnormal behaviour that is predictable and 110 per cent chosen by the aggressor as a means of expressing their anger. 5. A fifth principle, which is mine, states that violence always hides itself within themes such as love, kindness, common sense, skill, or tradition (to name a few) that exist in a relationship known as a

“drama triangle.” These themes are false “2+2=3” rationales that I call “gift-wrapping wow!” or coating. They mask a singular concept: that of the “idea of superiority.” Finally, remember that failing to gain control through psychological, physical, sexual or financial violence, the aggressor who does not seek ongoing professional help will sadly try to get revenge or become destructive. There is ample coverage of these cases in the media, ad nauseam. In conclusion of this series of articles, remember that there are four
phases to the Cycle of Violence and that it is always coated in several false rationales that hide a ubiquitous “idea of superiority.” In the three categories of violence— affective, organizational and social—violence exists in different levels of intensity and under four forms: psychological, physical, sexual and financial. Further, the five principles or foundations are necessary to properly understand this phenomenon that worries us all. Further columns will discuss, in ascending order: cowardice; the means of creating, developing, stoking and propagating violence such as the “pink glasses” technique; indignation; “boiling frog” syndrome; and the Taqiya, which is the art of dissimulation by dupery.
