t’s winter—time to check out the bird feeders and stock up on “fast food” for our feathered friends. A huge variety of bird feeders are available in local stores or can be made easily from milk jugs or cartons.

The cheerful black-capped chickadee is the most frequently reported “feeder bird” in the Yukon and in northern Canada, according to Bird Studies Canada (BSC).

Focused specifically on winter bird-feeding, from November 10 to April 5, a donation to join BSC is all that’s required for anyone to enroll in Project FeederWatch.

“We ask people to observe birds (number and type) over two consecutive days, for as long as they like, and to pick their days ahead,” said Wilcox, who submits her observations from every second weekend.

In 2017–18, PFW had more than 24,000 participants reporting over seven-million birds. In the Yukon, there were just six feeder-watchers reporting (Wilcox is keen to see more Yukoners taking part).

Registered participants receive a full-colour bird-identification poster and calendar, a tally sheet, last season’s results and online data entry. Donors may be eligible to receive a magazine subscription to BSC’s magazine, Birdwatch Canada.

While most of our winter birds rely mainly on a natural seed or insect diet (often cached), one black-capped chickadee study found that, after more than five days of -17� weather, those birds that had access to feeders fared better than those that didn’t.

Preparing those tasty fish treats

M

ost Yukoners like to eat fish, but sometimes people want a different taste sensation. Here are some fairly simple options to try:

dressing for 15–20 minutes. Wrap each fish cube in a partly cooked bacon strip secured with a toothpick. Cook gently on the barbecue or in a stainless veggie basket, for about 5–6 minutes, to be sure bacon is done.

Tasty Fish Treat #4 (Poor Man’s Lobster #1)

Ingredients or burbot fillets, cut into chunks or strips ● 3 tbsp. salt ● Butter, melted ● Garlic, crushed ● Pike

Ingredients ● Arctic grayling, filleted and cut into 1-inch squares ● Shake ’n Bake, for coating ● Oil, for deep frying Method Shake the fish in a ziplock bag with old-fashioned Shake ’n Bake (or any other preferred dry breadcrumb-based coating). Deep-fry in your favourite oil for 3–4 minutes, then remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Pike, burbot or stocked lake rainbows all work fine in this simple, delicious method.

Tasty Fish Treat #2

Ingredients ● Pike fillets, sliced into fingers ¾- to 1-inch wide ● HP sauce ● Garlic powder (optional) Method Brush fillets with HP sauce on both sides. Add garlic powder if you wish. Broil or barbecue on perforated tinfoil (to let juices out) or, carefully, in a stainless veggie basket on the barbecue.

Tasty Fish Treat #3 (Fish Chunk Appetizers)

Ingredients ● Fillets, cut into 1-inch (or so) cubes or chunks ● Italian salad dressing (enough to soak fish) ● Bacon strips (one per fillet)

Method Soak fish in a zesty Italian salad

Method Fill a fry-pan with water and bring water to a rolling boil with about 3 tablespoons of salt. Place fish pieces in the hot water and simmer for 4–5 minutes until they firm up, similar to lobster meat (pieces will float when done). Remove and drain, then dip in butter-garlic mixture.

Tasty Fish Treat #5 (Poor Man’s Lobster #2)

Ingredients ● 3 L water ● 3 tbsp. salt ● ½ cup lemon juice ● 1 medium onion, chopped ● 3 pieces celery, chopped ● Pike or burbot, filleted and cut into chunks or strips ● 1 bay leaf ● Butter, melted ● Garlic

Method Bring water with salt, lemon juice, onion and celery to a rolling boil.

Boil 4–5 minutes, then add fish and bay leaf and boil for another 3–4 minutes. Remove fish and drain, brushing with melted butter-garlic mixture. Broil or barbecue for 2 more minutes and serve with garlic butter.

Tasty Fish Treat #6 (Fish Cakes)

Ingredients ● 2 cups potatoes, mashed ● 1 garlic clove, crushed ● 4 green onions, finely sliced ● Tarragon, to taste ● 1 large egg, beaten ● Salt and pepper, to taste ● Fish, cooked (broken into small pieces) ● Oil, for frying ● Butter (for added flavour)

Fry in your favourite oil with butter added for flavour, until golden brown. These will usually hold together well for serving, but a gentle touch always works best.

Ingredients ● Salsa (for spreading) ● Pike fillets (or halibut steaks or chunks) ● Butter, melted (for spreading) Method Spread salsa on pike fillets or halibut steaks or chunks. For an interesting new taste for these fish pieces, just brush on some melted butter and then spread your favourite salsa over the top of the whole piece. This can be broiled in the oven, barbecued on perforated tinfoil (to allow juice to escape) or wrapped in tinfoil in the oven or on the barbecue. If the fish has the skin on it, there’s no need for the tinfoil (except for baking). It is easily overcooked, either way, so keep checking to establish a cooking time, about 8–9 minutes.

What’s on the river? – A winter warm-up to the Christmas Bird Count

The Yukon Bird Club will be hosting a free bird-watching walk on November 21 at noon

I

t’s snowy and cold outside, and most of the Yukon’s migratory birds, such as swans, pretty yellow warblers, ducks and shorebirds, have long fled the territory.

There’s always a few species, however, that linger.

A favoured habitat for some of these birds is the Yukon River, just below the Rotary Centennial Bridge (“blue bridge”) near the Millennium Trail.

A Yukon government conservation biologist and birding pro, Cameron Eckert, will be guiding a free noon-hour event to check out “What’s on the River?” here on Wednesday, November 21.

“The one-hour trip is a chance to ‘check in’ on late-fall migrants and birds that have settled in for the long winter,” he said.

Yukon bird life drops dramatically once our migratory friends head south. In late May, observations show there might be 140 species around Whitehorse, but by winter the number falls to around 40 of our resident birds.

While Yukoners enjoyed an extended fall birding season, Eckert noted that “bird-wise” things caught up pretty quickly (to winter-time numbers and species) once snow and cold temperatures arrived in late October.

In addition to forest birds, such as chickadees and black-billed magpies, it’s usual to see water birds like the common merganser (a diving duck that conducts river food patrols while gazing underwater) and the American dipper (a dark, chubby bird that bobs up and down on rocks before diving into fast-flowing water) on the trip.

Eckert, who’s been guiding birders on this trip for the last six years, doesn’t expect to see many migrant stragglers, such as lateseason warblers, “though we might see some sparrows,” he said.

Any trends? He says he hasn’t noticed any, but sometimes there are “unusual” late-fall sightings such as the dark-crested belted kingfisher, which was hanging on two years ago. “And American bald eagles are more common now in winter than they used to be.”

A few hardy American robins have also been observed here in late fall and winter, over the last decade, though rarely do they survive to see spring. Camouflaged by rusty-coloured weeds at the Yukon River shoreline, the orangebreasted bird feeds on insects also found in the mud and on exposed rocks.

The field trip is the final one this year for the Yukon Bird Club,

a non-profit charitable organization that promotes the awareness, appreciation and conservation of Yukon birds and their habitats.

Eckert notes that the event is a good warm-up for the annual Christmas Bird Count, a North American-wide “citizen-science” bird census held from December 14 to January 5 (more on that next month).

Anyone interested in joining Eckert on November 21 should meet at the Whitehorse Fish Ladder in Riverdale, at noon. Wear boots and dress warmly, he suggests: “There’s a fairly chilly breeze that comes down the river.”

If you have binoculars, bring them, but if you don’t, Eckert will have a few pairs to use, as well as his spotting scope. “It’s a nice social time,” adds Eckert. “A good time to meet other birders on an easy winter walk.”

nly two weeks to go until the 2018 Cranberry Fair, when, again, over 40 artists will gather to present the Yukon’s exceptional artistic craftsmanship. On November 25, the doors open for another grand exhibition and sale at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre, this time in the Long House and the Elders’ Lounge.

The Northern Fibres Guild (NFG), the proud founder with over 40 years of successful organization of this event, has reached another benchmark in its endeavour to promote and sustain traditional skills in working with diverse fibres.

Having reached out for a few years to the Yukon First Nations (YFN) arts and crafts community, to work together and present traditional skills and handiworks, the 2018 Cranberry Fair will now portray 49 exhibitors, among whom are four first-time participants in the fair, five YFN members from all over the territory, as well as nine NFG members.

In combination with the Yukon First Nations Culture & Tourism Association (YFNCT) and several independent First Nations artists, the Cranberry Fair saw the need and mutual benefit of working together for a more-inclusive and representative blend of Yukon arts and crafts, thus providing a balanced presentation of what our northern land has to show.

After bringing a YFN artist onboard for this year’s jury selection in August, we made great headway in contacting a broader membership of YFN artists and craftspeople, which resulted in selecting five First Nations artists to participate in this year’s fair.

The executive director of YFNCT, Charlene Alexander, acknowledges the importance of our cooperation as a valuable means for the Yukon arts community, especially the growth of exposure for YFN artists.

“Yukon First Nations Culture and Tourism Association is very excited that the 2018 Cranberry Fair will include a great selection of both traditional and contemporary art by Yukon First Nations

artists. The Cranberry Fair is considered one of the premiere art and craft Christmas markets, with a juried collection of high-quality, handcrafted art and fine crafts made by Yukon’s most creative and skilled artists. The inclusion of work by Yukon First Nations artists will be a great addition to this much-anticipated Christmas event and market,” said Alexander.

The Cranberry Fair was able to show, with its high-quality artistic exposure, that it is a functional springboard to kickstart a successful and thriving economic future.

Some of the exhibitors have been in this event on a yearly basis, expressing their confidence in the value of this event. For other artists, this is the beginning of a new road. Tara Darcy (McDiarmid), a nature artist from the crow clan of the Tr’ondek Hwech’in and Na-cho Nyak Dun First Nations of northern Yukon and first-time participant in the Cranberry Fair, has strong expectations.

“I try to capture the profound beauty and spirit of nature in my art. For me, art is all about the relationships, so I would love to meet people who may be interested in my art at the Cranberry Fair,” said Tara, a YFN artist.

Another highlight is the youngest exhibitor, Charlie Fidler, a 10-year-old Yukoner, who is well on his way to becoming an astonishing artist. The Cranberry Fair is proud to help him with this.

With around 2,000 visitors and a rising number of exhibitors, each year, the Guild decided to book two rooms for 2018: the Longhouse and the Elders’ Lounge.

I was always pleased to see the ever-increasing number of applications and participants [in] this wonderful event. Over the years, 2,000 visitors have consistently come to the Cranberry Fair from all over the Yukon and from other parts of Canada, even including a few travellers from abroad.

hese breakfast wraps are my favorite part of every hunting or camping trip. Trekking through the Yukon has so much to offer

(vast nature, beautiful views, abundant wildlife) and yet it’s the smell of these wraps crisping up over a fire that’s the memory I cling to when I’m away. They just don’t taste as good anywhere else.

These two versions are staples in my house, but you can add or subtract. Or even mash these two together, you really can’t go wrong.

Set oven at 350℉. In a skillet, over medium-high heat, cook the bacon until crisp and brown, about 8 minutes. Remove the bacon and drain on paper towel, then carefully remove fat from the pan, leaving about one tablespoon behind. Add the onions to the remaining bacon fat and cook until soft, about 5 minutes, then add apples and continue to cook until apples begin to soften, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Cook the macaroni according to package directions, then drain and reserve.

I n a medium oven-safe pot, melt the butter over mediumhigh heat. When the butter is completely melted, add the flour and whisk over the heat until flour and butter are fully incorporated.

Whisk the milk into the flour mixture, making sure to whisk out any clumps. Continue to whisk until the sauce begins to bubble and thicken, then add 1 cup of grated cheese and whisk until cheese is fully melted and incorporated into the sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

ukon Backcountry Skiing’s owner, Claude Vallier, introduces his two girls, Kiona and Heidi, to the world by making a movie of skiing the wild Yukon mountains. “I didn’t really want to make a movie, but after participating in other movies and TV shows, I wanted to show more what I want,” said Vallier. “People always say, ‘How do you do that with your girls? How do you motivate them, when it’s cold and dark?’”

The movie features his teenage girls battling the elements in remote Yukon mountain areas, such as White Pass, Haines Pass, Kluane National Park, and the Saint Elias Mountains. “You don’t have to be a professional skier. You don’t have to be the fastest or craziest,” said Vallier. “You don’t have to be super good … Ski movies, these days, are all showing this crazy kind of skiing. It’s about having fun.”

And you can see the fun they had by watching the movie—the

smiles on the girls faces, even after they’d been dragged outside while complaining that they wanted to stay home in dark, cold winter.

“The goal of sport is to be outside and to have fun. It brings fun, joy, trust and better balance,” said Vallier. “You get to know people better that you are going with. Even if it’s your family ... when in the wild environment, you have to manage things—like, if it gets cold or dark—how to manage these things together.”

Like any sport, backcountry adventures are even more paramount to danger, and getting his daughters outside teaches them a healthy respect and develops their understanding of the mountains.

“It’s important to learn a lot of things.

“The best schools don’t have doors, walls or windows ... it’s outside. It takes away interference like cars, TV, phones … t’s you, the people you are with and

the environment. A better connection. When you want to get to know someone, you can see a lot [about them] in the wilderness. It can push your boundaries and [help you] to know what your limits are.

You don’t really know what you are capable of doing. Even if you are tired or cold, you have to go.”

The movie features some stunning terrain, highlighting how wild and isolated the Yukon is in winter. The Vallier family moved 10 years ago to Whitehorse from Le Grand-Bornand, France, because Europe simply is too overcrowded.

Over that 10 years, Vallier, with his company Yukon Backcountry Skiing, has been documenting and highlighting previously unknown areas.

Each year, Vallier travels to the Saint Elias Mountains, a popular spot for spring skiing and sledding near Haines Pass. So this year he took his girls to the location where it has float plane access. “It’s so unique and nothing like anywhere

else in the world,” he said [which you can see in the visuals of the movie].

Vallier’s daughters started ski touring when they were seven and nine years old, and to do this, Vallier had to create their skis.

Ski companies don’t making touring skis (yet) for children. “If you think touring is hard for adults, it’s much harder for children,” said Vallier. “They are smaller, and even with the lightest equipment, it is a lot of work for them.

For now, they learn to ski, but it’s more about fun than technical stuff now. They can ski well down anything autonomously.”

Meeting “Les Filles”

Kiona, 13, and Heidi, 11, have been skiing since before they can actually remember. Kiona was one and Heidi was 11 months old when they learned to ski. So I got to chat with the two lucky girls who get to go on adventures with their dad, in the Yukon’s backcountry, and

found out what they thought about making a ski movie ...

Do you remember learning to ski?

H: No, not really. There’s a video of my dad holding me and skiing down [Heidi demonstrates, pretending to be her dad holding her skiing]. I don’t remember, there’s evidence of it.

Do you like ski touring?

H: Downhill is better. You can go faster and don’t stop.

K: I like to ski tour if I go up, and it’s worth it to go down. It’s nothing worse than you go up and you have to go stop to go through trees, or it’s icy.

What was it like to make a movie with your dad?

H: It was fun when we got to go eat [laughs], but, at the same time, it was tiring. We had to do it cont’d on page 13...

Claude: I didn’t ask them to do any of it. They came back exhausted from our day, and then a couple hours later they were doing this race … I don’t know where they found the energy.

K: You can find energy for things you really want to do.

H: Like having fun.

K: My favourite part ... I enjoyed drawing and listening to music.

H: We had to get up at 5 a.m., get on a plane and had to carry all the stuff, and we were tired and the tent wasn’t ready, so we had to build our tent. I just wanted to lie down.

Is skiing your favourite sport?

H: No, I’d rather do other sports, like skating.

K: It’s my second-favourite sport. Skating is first. I think ’cause I chose to do it [skating]. I was born into skiing. I like it, but skating is my favourite.

Participants in the kids’ workshop at Geek the Halls will have a chance to craft wands like those sold at Olivander’s of Harry Potter fame

T

he second annual Geek the Halls craft fair is a different affair than the larger, more established craft fairs. But the vendors participating are a different sort of crafters and artists than the traditional Yukon crafters. Carrie Jackson, the Yukon Comic Culture Society president, explained that the society hosts creators who are focused on geek culture. The number of vendors was not yet finalized at the time of writing, as registration was still open.

“Our summer event was well attended,” said Jackson. “It’s a mix of artists and crafters. We have digital painters, jewellerymakers, cameo-makers and fan artists.”

The society has recognized that children are an integral draw for their brand, and will continue with their kids section at the craft fair. Participants will be able to participate in Harry Potter wandmaking workshops, and they will

also offer perler beads crafting.

Perler beads crafting uses small plastics beads that are laid out on a surface in a design and then pressed and melted, with an iron, into a solid creation.

The Geek the Halls event is one of several events the society has been delivered this year that expand on the group’s main event,YukomiCon, according to Jackson. The group has been partnering with Titan Gaming & Collectibles to offer Settlers of Catan tournaments on a monthly basis, and that partnership has spawned another geek event for fantasy art fans. On November 20, they will host a fantasy drawing workshop at Titan Gaming & Collectibles that will feature model cosplayers dressed up as characters. The reveal of the subjects will be a surprise for participants.

As well, Jackson noted that the Yukon Comic Culture Society partnered with Boardwalk

Burlesque, from Dawson City, to deliver an event there on October 12. Boardwalk Burlesque performed four “geeky” acts and the society did geek trivia in-between performances. The event was well-received and they plan to do it again, she said.

She also noted that their Harry Potter wand-making workshop is now being offered as a birthday party event, which helps raise funds for the society.

The Geek the Halls event happens on November 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gold Rush Inn. For more information, check out their Facebook page, Yukon Comic Culture Society.

In Celebration of the 30th Anniversary of REDRESS In early 1942, Canadian government invoked the War Measures Act. “All persons of Japanese origin” were labeled “enemy aliens”. Approximately 23,000 Japanese Canadians (75% of them were Canadian citizens) were stripped of all civil rights; their boats, farms, businesses, and houses were confiscated. They were sent to the Internment camps, to the sugar beet farms in Manitoba, to road camps, or even to prisoner-of-war camps; often families were separated. They were not allowed to return to the west coast until 1949.

In 1988, the government of Canada acknowledged that its action was wrong and apologized to the Japanese Canadian community. The historic Redress was signed between the then-Prime Minister Mulroney and Art Miki, the then-president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC).

Two inspiring and motivational words that bring back many pleasant memories, both of crafting and shopping; they evoke a sense of excitement in so many Yukoners who have an appreciation for the incredible talent and variety of our northern artisans. Many local craftspeople—quilters, sewers, candlemakers, weavers, painters, beaders, bakers and countless others—are preparing their giftwares to display creatively, while masses of Christmas shoppers are eagerly preparing their lists and checking them twice.

This year, the Yukon Craft Society (YCS) will be hosting the 43rd annual Spruce Bog, truly a Whitehorse Christmas tradition. There has been tremendous growth in this organization over the years, both in terms of membership and in the size and number of events hosted. Over the past year, there have been many changes in the structure of the YCS. There is a new board of seven directors, with more coming to lighten the workload. They have spent many hours working as a group, brainstorming new ideas and then working on the distribution of the myriad tasks that will make this year’s Spruce Bog and other events even better.

Sheila Matechuk is the marketing spokesperson of the board.

She is a native Yukoner, returning to Whitehorse after more than 25 years of experience in the advertising and digital marketing field in Vancouver and California. She helped Jolie Patterson, a Spruce Bog vendor and graphic designer, to revise the logo that has been familiar, for many years, and to create a new Spruce Bog website to make it easier for vendors. The Facebook and Instagram pages have also been updated.

As Sheila said, “People want a story to go with buying locallyproduced gifts—gifts with a northern flair, gifts that can’t be bought elsewhere.” The items at Spruce Bog are true originals, handcrafted with love and care, definitely different than what’s found in traditional box stores. The sale is held early in the Christmas shopping season, so there is plenty of time to get your precious parcels ready for shipping.

This year’s Spruce Bog Craft Fair features a wide array of crafts, from quilts that mirror paintings, to paintings that mirror nature, to knit designs that are seen in current fashion, or to locally-made gourmet coffee The YCS board is excited to announce that this year’s Spruce Bog will be held on Sunday November 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Kwanlin Dűn Cultural Centre, using every meeting room.

Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. for seniors and for those with mobility issues. The new location will be easier for both vendors and shoppers, with much more space, better parking, accessibility for those walking downtown, and better lighting.

There will be an astounding 76 vendors present this year, with an amazing diversity in products for your Christmas giving: First Nations art, moccasins, cards, quilting, knitting, wood products, photography, baking, dog coats, sweaters and other fur-baby treats, rope baskets, wool dryer balls, jewelry, candles, paper crafts and decorations, to name just a few. More male products than just beard oil are available this year, such as fishing lures and hooks. And, of course, there will be a plentiful supply of cards and stocking stuffers of all kinds.

The industrious vendors have been working hard on their booths, again, with much attention to aesthetics and accessibility, to create displays that look professional, attractive and appealing, to entice shoppers. There

Evoking kintsugi

hitehorse artist Leslie Leong applied for a residency at the Ted Harrison Artists Retreat to work towards a large show at the Yukon Arts Centre Gallery in the fall of 2019.

But she had lots of other ideas to work through first, both larger and smaller.

At the artists’ retreat, on Crag Lake, she was able to think big thoughts and, on a smaller scale, make gorgeous pieces of art jewelry, now on display at the Yukon Artists @ Work Gallery at 4th and Wood.

Leong had lots of little ideas that were plaguing her, mainly designs for jewelry inspired by the natural world. And she had big realizations about human impact on the natural world, from her trip on a tall ship to Svalbard, Norway, 1,000 kilometres from the North Pole, that she had to come to terms with.

Leong sailed from Longyearbyen, in Norway, to the Islands of Svalbard, with 28 other artists on a tall ship, last June, crossing the 80th parallel. They sailed to the northernmost point of the archipelago, “really just rocks in the sea,” said Leong.

“On the one hand, it was very exciting; but also, it was not, because the only way we could get there so easily was because of the lack of sea ice,” reflected Leong.

“Climate change is really doing stuff.”

Looking over the water, she realized, as the crow flies, she was only about 4,000 kilometres from Whitehorse. Then she thought about the 15,500 kilometres she had travelled to get there, flying via Vancouver, Halifax, Paris and so on.

Leong had always known that she was part of the circumpolar community, but living in a city like Whitehorse, it seemed to her that we were too comfortable to really claim such a citizenship. On this trip she came to accept that role, which means, to her, having more of a responsibility to take care of the circumpolar world and to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change.

From the tall ship, she collected a lot of garbage (it floats around freely in the sea!) and shipped it back home, which was expensive.

So, for her first month at the Ted Harrison Artist Retreat, Leong was “downloading and unpacking

that experience,” both literally and figuratively. She realized she was experiencing “climate change depression,” and that wasn’t very helpful. Her realization that the planet is broken, kept her from taking any action at all.

Then Whitehorse poet Clea Roberts, attending a writing conference in Dawson Creek called Words North, put out a call for artists to respond to poems. A poem by Helen Knott explored the Japanese idea of kintsugi, golden repair, where broken ceramics are repaired with gold.

On the Svalbard trip, two of the other artists, Adam Kuby and Shohei Katayama, took photographs of metallic emergency blankets laid into the crack of a glacier.

This evoked the idea of kintsugi for Leong. She had kintsugi in mind for the gold-embellished landscape print she made in response to Roberts’ call. She’s keen now to make artwork that embraces the planet’s brokenness, to repair it in a way to make something new and beautiful.

For the jewelry, she “had all these things hanging around” in her brain. Sometimes an idea strikes but you don’t have time

to do it. Leong made sketches, invested with the promise of the artwork to come. Some of these ideas date back past 2013. Some of them are extensions of jewelry lines she already makes regularly and displays at the Yukon Artists @Work Gallery. And they will clear out her mind to begin to work on her larger format, the Yukon Arts Centre show! Leong finds it very satisfying to bring these ideas to completion.

Precious, Leong’s show of jewelry, opened with a reception on Friday November 9. The installation uses a wide variety of reclaimed and found materials, as Leong is well-known for. The gallery-style presentation of jewelry reminds me of galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico. You can enjoy the show until November 28.

Leong gave an artist talk reflecting on her Svalbard experience during Culture Days, at the end of September. Watch out for another one in Whitehorse in January.

Remembering (and never repeating) history

The Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon will host events this month to celebrate the Redress campaign of 1988

T

he Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon (JCAY) will be hosting events this November in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the success of the Redress campaign in 1988.

Fumi Torigai, former president of JACY, for 9 years, now community-relations advisor, explains that, in 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbour, Canada joined World War II. “America and Canada, what they did, they put an act into effect. All Japanese descendants— old, young, men, women, children, babies—it didn’t matter,” said Torigai. “They were labelled enemy aliens. Citizens were sent to interior B.C. or farther inland to internment camps. Many were Canadian citizens, about 75 per cent. They were kept there until 1949 … four years after the war ended.”

Some 22,000 Canadian citizens and residents were taken from their homes, on Canada’s West Coast, without due process or any warning. They were sent to remote areas of B.C. and as far as Saskatchewan. The Canadian government had stripped these Canadian citizens of their rights and property.

“People were put into internment camps, and many didn’t speak about it for many years,” explained Torigai. “[However], the second and third generations learned about the history. They were educated in Canada and heard what the government had done to Japanese Canadians. They studied resistance campaigning.”

These various scholars and activists challenged the Canadian government and (with the support of communities, indigenous peoples and ethnic groups), in 1988, Prime Minister Mulroney apologized to Japanese Can-

adians. “[During] this celebration [of the] 30th anniversary of Redress, we would like to see the positive side and influence of the Redress ... what the Redress has done to the Canadian society and democracy,” explained Torigai. “Shortly after that, the government apologized to Chinese; then, after that, residential school survivors.

Things were moving ahead and the focus on the positive that the redress had and how it influenced the Canadian public opinion, democracy, political thinking.”

To celebrate the anniversary, JCAY has arranged a film festival featuring the 2016 film called Her Love Boils Bathwater, directed by Ryota Nakano. The film won numerous awards in Japan and was entered for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

“The film festival will be showing a current film showing Japanese culture and day-to-day life of contemporary Japan,” said Torigai. “It will give Canadian people an understanding that we might have different cultures and different ways of living, but we are people.

“We are all human beings. We all laugh, we get angry, we experience sorrow and hardships—all in different ways—but we are all human beings.”

In addition, JCAY will bring Art Miki, from Winnipeg, to speak at the Yukon College and the public library. “He was the leader of the Redress,” said Torigai. “He is a hero among Japanese Canadians.

We have to work together and don’t label one group of people and stop fighting against each other. We need to stop hatred with each other. There is more and more violence, but we need peace.” JCAY hopes that high-

lighting the positive impacts of the Redress will help everybody to understand, learn and utilize the opportunity for positive growth in multicultural Canada. “[People] probably don’t know much of this history. Many Canadians are not aware of what happened,” said Torigai. “We would like ordinary Canadian people to know more about what happened 76 years ago, what happened 30 years [ago] and what that means to us.”

In today’s world, it’s becoming important to acknowledge and learn from history.

“As part of Miki’s appearance in the Yukon, the hope is that he can inform and educate to the general public, including schools.

“People are denying history, but we can’t let that happen. I just met a Holocaust survivor who spoke at the high school,” said Torigai. “That’s very important.

Our community has fought hard to get the Redress to bring this to people [in the Yukon].”

If you visit Auschwitz, the well-known concentration camp in Oświęcim, Poland, you will see the famous, disturbing slogan, “Work will set you free.” Inside the haunted halls of the buildings reads George Santayana’s quote: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

ne of my favourite star clusters resides high overhead in our winter sky. In fact, it is always in our sky, for our viewing pleasure, as it is circumpolar. It is close enough to the North Star (Polaris) that it never sets.

I am actually referring to a pair of clusters, the famous Double Cluster in Perseus. These clusters are close together in the sky and appear to the naked eye as an extended hazy patch—kind of a peanut shape, I’m told by someone with better eyes than mine. In reality, they are a couple-hundred light years (ly) apart, but, at the distance of about 7,500 ly away, it is difficult to see that separation without optical aid.

Before I describe their location in the sky, I recommend that everyone find a monthly sky chart online to print off and use to familiarize yourself with our night sky. A very good one is at Skymaps.com, a two-page sky chart with simpleto-use instructions and plenty of helpful hints.

You will notice, embedded in the Milky Way band shown on the chart, the prominent “W” shape of the constellation Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia is high overhead in our sky, and once you’ve found her, it is a cinch to locate the Double Cluster (also shown on the chart). I visualize the left arm of the “W”—the one that looks like its flopped over too far—as the base of an elongated triangle (kind of an arrowhead shape that hangs below the “W” from that left arm). When viewed through binoculars, the hazy patch of the Double Cluster is resolved into two distinct concentrations of brilliant blue-white points of light. Those sharp points of light are the largest stars of the clusters and are many times the mass of our Sun. They are supergiant stars, fusing furiously with luminosities thousands of times brighter than our home star, which is why we can see them at all over such a great distance.

Each cluster is home to more than 300 of these supergiants.

The fact that there are still supergiants residing in the Double Cluster tells us that the clusters must be very young. Paradoxically, the larger the star, the quicker it goes through its nuclear fuel, and thus the shorter its life. Supergiants devour their hydrogen content so voraciously that their lives are measured in millions of years instead of billions, as with smaller stars like our Sun. A telescope reveals several red giant stars within the clusters— large stars that have swelled and cooled, and all but exhausted their nuclear fuel and are very near the end of their lives.

One study determined the clusters harboured even larger stars that have already met their demise and have supernovaed into neutron stars or black holes. All of this suggests an age for the Double Cluster of less than five-million years— barely toddlers, astronomically speaking.

The Double Cluster is embedded within the Perseus Arm of our Milky Way galaxy. As our Sun resides on the inner edge of the Orion Arm, when we look at the Double Cluster, we are looking through the Orion Arm and into the Perseus Arm, the next spiral arm out from the center of our galaxy. Both clusters, having evolved from the same gas and dust cloud, are moving spatially together. At present, that happens to be toward us, at a leisurely

pace of about 21 kilometres per second (km/sec). But don’t hold your breath on the Double Cluster ever becoming cozy neighbours with us. In the grand-time scale of things astronomical, the clusters will have long since dissolved before they could ever get close to our neck of the galactic woods.

The largest stars of the cluster will pop off in supernovae, and gravitational dynamics will slingshot most of the rest of the stars out of the clusters, to live solitary lives like our Sun. I quite enjoy viewing these beautiful clusters, without optical aid, just as a hazy patch. Everytime I’m out under our glorious night sky, I make sure to cast a glance upward and into the disc of our galaxy to wish the Double Cluster a good evening. It is never lost on me, even with just a quick glance, that those photons striking my eyeballs at that very moment left those massive stars shortly after the retreat of the last ice age, when wooly mammoths were just beginning their stompings about the Yukon, and had been travelling in space at 300,000 km/sec ever since. And there I was, just in the nick of time, to catch a few of them.

So, until next time, do get out and catch a few ancient photons yourself. Just in the nick of time.
