ne of the more interesting jobs I’ve ever held was hosting an open-line show (we secretly called it “openmouth”) on a private radio station in Charlottetown, PEI. Unlike some parts of Canada— especially B.C., with its tradition of brash (often infuriating) talkradio hosts such as Jack Webster, Raif Mair, Christy Clark and others, mid-’70s PEI was anything but a hotbed of political controversy.

As one of only two open-mouth hosts on the Island, I was often hard-pressed to come up with a news-related hook for my show every day.

The problem was compounded by the province’s size. With a highly interrelated population of merely 117,000, it was often a challenge finding people willing to vent their opinions in public when their friends, neighbours and customers were probably listening.

Before long, I learned the secret to getting the switchboard to light up.

Two topics were always guaranteed to generate a brisk response: cooking and gardening.

Since both are close to my heart, it was easy to find a winning daily subject when the “square root of nothing” was happening at either Province House or City Hall.

For instance, if my opening monologue referred to my annoyance that last night’s Irish stew lacked the consistency I prefer, I could virtually go on autopilot from the moment I first said, “Good morning. You’re on the air.”

For two solid hours, I would get heartfelt—and often wildly-contradictory—advice about how to improve my basic roux, how long and how hot I should have simmered the meat and veg, and what cookware I should (or shouldn’t) have used.

My goal, wherever possible, was to take myself out of the equation and let the callers carry on amongst themselves about the topic of the day.

That period of my life re-entered my consciousness recently because of some unfortunate experiences with this year’s urban garden.

No, not the squirrels. (For the love of all that’s holy, do not get

me started on the squirrels. I swear I will find a forever solution to those bushy-tailed marauders, before I die.)

The specific problem concerns a powdery white blight playing mischief with the platter-sized leaves of my pumpkin, squash and zucchini plants. That is, those not already destroyed by the abovementioned malevolent rodents.

Suggestions from my immediate circle of acquaintances have included overwatering, underwatering, watering at the wrong time of day, using chlorinated (or is that fluoridated?) municipal H2O, bad seed, improper pH balance and/or global warming.

They may not all be right, but they may not all be wrong. Trouble is, Googling the options to sort wheat from chaff takes far too long.

My long-ago listeners would have solved it by now.

nly in the Yukon would we conceptualize a relay race where hundreds of people (when it first started) run along a highway through the night. Not to mention, we’ll decide to make all the race legs about a half marathon, so while you are battling the demands of your circadian rhythm to curl up into a ball and sleep, you are ignoring your body berating you for indulging one, or a dozen, too many times throughout the past year.

Thanks to Dan Lang, we can also now aspire to be inscribed on the Senator’s Cup, achieved by running all ten legs. The introduction of this award came as a bit of an exasperation to those of us who spent our first events running the same leg over and over again. (In my teens, I ran leg 10, three years in a row, which I now regret not having got a head start on multiple legs while I was fit.)

My completion of leg four during the 2017 Klondike Road Relay (KRR) marked the last time I “needed” to run in the middle of the night in my quest to complete all 10 legs. (I’m easing into my Senator’s Cup inscription with only legs two, three and seven left to run.) But that doesn’t mean that countless others are going to brave the cold and dark of running between midnight and six in the

morning. That’s right, you pour souls who got asked to take on legs four, five or six by your team captain because you “look in shape, like you’ve been training.” Or you are the team captain and no one else would do it. Those legs are a special experience, a special club that you join.

To those of you just embarking on your first night run, or those needing a reminder of what you’ve got yourself into, I’ve got a sample of my thoughts that I shared with friends last year over the course of my run. I’m sure many of you can relate, because two hours running in the dark leaves lots of time for thinking.

Chronological thoughts from the KRR leg four: This is great, I’m already done, I’ve visualized I’m there, so no problem.

Maybe I’ve trained more than I thought. This is going really well.

Maybe I’ll finish ahead of my fast estimate!

My leg isn’t supposed to feel like that. That’s not good.

It was nothing, I’m fine. I could use some water now, where the heck is my support vehicle?

Hmmm, now my other leg hurts a bit, that’s my good leg. That’s really not good. It must be the road angle putting strain on it.

Do I need to pee? This isn’t

good … never mind, I’m fine.

This hill seemed way shorter driving to my starting checkpoint.

OK, bobbing ponytail blowing past me, you have a good run too.

Great. My knees have decided to quit.

I wonder, If a bear came out of the woods and mauled me, would it hurt less than my legs do right now? Probably not, and that would be a legit excuse to bow out, right?

I think I’d take that trade off.

The 1 km mark! Yes, I’m there!

This is not 1 km, you sadistic bastards—and why is it on a hill?

Ok, finish strong. Look like a runner in front of all these people.

You did not look like a runner finishing.

re you looking for a new activity this fall? Why not try Tai Chi? It is an ancient Chinese martial art designed for exercise, self-defence and meditation.

Many people I have spoken to about Tai Chi have the mistaken impression that it is tortuously slow or that one simply stands around holding weird poses for no apparent reason, or that there are no health benefits. Luckily, I did not have any of these misconceptions, as I had the good fortune of watching proficient groups practising this discipline in Vancouver and China. With my background in human kinetics, I could tell right away that the practice had many physiological benefits. Also, I was struck by the fact that some participants seemed to be in their eighties or nineties. Their ability to sustain this exercise for an hour, complete the movements with grace, and balance on one leg with ease was impressive.

I was also enthralled by the peaceful beauty of the movements and the synchronicity of the participants. When I saw a group practising on the bustling waterfront in Macau, it was mindboggling how they maintained their calm focus in the midst of the frenetic activity surrounding them. These encounters must have planted a slow-growing seed in my psyche, as more than 20 years later when I spotted a sandwich board, on Lewes boulevard, advertising Tai Chi classes and I

A kick being executed in hand form instantly knew that the time had come to give it a try. That was two years ago, and I have been hooked ever since.

Initially, I was surprised to learn that Tai Chi is a martial art and that every move in hand form has a defensive application. For example, the elegant “cloud hands” move involves a block, a grab and a pull-down. Learn the application and the move becomes easier to remember. That is a good thing as there are 103 moves to recall if one endeavours to learn the traditional long form. Talk about a cognitive workout! Fortunately, the long form is broken into three parts, so learning it section by section is not so daunting. There are other shorter hand forms as well. My personal favourites are the 16 movement form and a new 22 movement form called Yang Family Essential, which will be the focus of a seminar on September 23.

Tai Chi has many known health benefits including balance, mindfulness, structural alignment, flexibility, relaxation and strength. In the United States, Tai Chi leads the list of effective fall-prevention programs advocated by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Balance is a learned and practised complex skill that many people lose, over time, due to physical inactivity or to visual or vestibular (inner ear) degeneration. The way Tai Chi is practised with slow, complex movements (some com-

bining a head turn with specific visual focus), addresses different aspects of balance by improving cognition (anticipatory postural adjustments) and proprioception (the sense that allows us to engage our muscles and joints, to achieve equilibrium), as well as providing something akin to vestibular therapy. The bent-knee posture of Tai Chi movements also greatly strengthens leg, hip and ankle muscles and connective tissue important for balance.

There is also the social aspect of Tai Chi to consider. This is particularly evident when we come together on Saturday mornings for free practice sessions or participate in special events. In other words—come join us—I think you’ll like us!

Starting the week of September 17, Tai Chi Yukon is offering four evening classes for beginners, and during the first week the classes are free. Also this season (September–April), chief instructor Pam Boyde will be leading a series of eight seminars including traditional form, push hands, and sword and sabre forms. Fortunately for me, I have my “Yoda” of mountain biking (Steve Reid), the new general manager of Mount Sima, who introduces me to the steps to riding a mountain-bike resort.

It’s a busy evening as we get to the base, with people enjoying the warm, sun-filled evening. There’s actually a queue for the lift, with everyone enjoying the trails, particularly the new one that was built. Lulu’s truck, beer garden and music await riders, later in the evening, for food and drinks to enjoy after the rides down.

Mountain biking at Sima is certainly an experience worth undertaking—a great social atmosphere—and even if you are a beginner, it’s possible to get down and enjoy yourself.

Biking is available Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., subject to weather conditions. Paragliding opportunities are also available.

n Next step—riding down Steve advises that it’s not that bad and we begin our descent on the trail aptly named “Righty Tighty.” Yes—the trail goes to the right of the mountain and it’s tight (single track). We ride to the trailhead and Steve is off like the speed of light, as though it’s not straight downhill over a wooden ramp into a somewhat-sharp corner down a hill. His encouragement somehow makes me do it and we are off down the trail.

Of course, I’m unable to keep up, but the twists and turns, the rolling features and the wooden boardwalks make it a terrifying yet exhilarating ride down. Mount Sima certainly develops features for all levels of riders to enjoy on their descent to the bottom.

Ready to ride “Drop the Clutch” trail

(a.k.a. dinner bell) helps others know there is a slow rider on the trail.

After our first ride, my arms are already suffering from the relentless jolting over bumpy terrain. Yet, I run into a buddy, Christina MacNeil, from the Dirt Girls group, who is up for riding with me, and so we head up to go on another lap.

We head to the popular trail, “Drop the Clutch,” which is aptly named because the beginning goes straight down, round and round, and you hold on for dear life hoping to stay on the track. I hit my first spot, that I somehow successfully fall on but sacrifice Grasshopper to the brunt of the fall, rather than my body. I run after my bike and quickly get back onto the trail, so as not to get run over by another rider.

I would like to begin a collection of portraits of animals from other parts of the world as well. African animals figured so prominently in my early imagination that a bucket list dream of travelling through Africa was realized in 1990.

t’s no secret that Alberta artist Kari Lehr loves bears. You only need to look at her bright and expressive bear “portraits” to see she has an affinity with animals.

Lehr, who lives in Crowsnest Pass, has developed quite a following in the Yukon over the past few years, despite the fact that she has never visited the territory.

With her first visit to the Yukon coinciding with a show of new paintings at North End Gallery, in September, I talked to her about her career and why her paintings seem to speak to so many people of all ages.

Where did you grow up? And how long have you lived in Crowsnest Pass?

I grew up in Calgary and lived there until 2004 when my husband, three children and I moved to Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.

You are known for painting in acrylics.

How long have you been painting for?

I have been painting since 2007.

Prior to that, I was an illustrator for twenty years, working primarily in chalk pastel. Switching to paint was an awkward transition, but soon I was hooked. I started in acrylics and have stayed with that medium ever since, as it is so versatile and quick-drying, which

is nice when you tend to work on a show up to the 11th hour!

Do you paint full-time? And at what point did you become a full-time artist?

I have been a full-time artist for about seven years. It has always been my primary occupation, but a daily studio practice has only become a part of my life in recent years—more so since I began doing art shows and markets in 2011, followed by a wholesale business in 2015 in which my husband and I marketed the reproductions of my line of Wild Things animal imagery to retailers across Canada.

You clearly have a talent for capturing a sense of life in the animals you paint. What attracted you to painting wildlife?

I have always been fascinated with wildlife and wild places. My earliest memories include the weekly ritual of watching Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom and Walt Disney’s live-action animal stories. We know now that there were perhaps unethical methods used in the filming of these shows, but, as a child, they completely captured my imagination. Today I am still enthralled by award-winning shows like the BBC’s Planet Earth series.

Once you started to paint animals, did bears always feature so prominently in your work?

Bears have always been a preoccupation. I had a poster of the Kuhtzumeteen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary on my wall during my teens, and hope to visit it someday. My husband birthday-gifted me with a trip to Knight Inlet, to view the grizzlies there in 2016, and it was a bucket list experience for me.

Growing up, I had a lot of bad dreams about bears, and I think that painting them has been therapeutic for me in many ways.

From the beginning, I painted them as portraits with a focus on the eyes, which I connected to and conversed with during the course of the painting. I was never interested in creating a portrait of a threatening animal, though, preferring to endow them with a sense of the awe, respect and compassion I feel for them and what they’ve meant to me over the years. I don’t see bears as either cute and cuddly or vicious.

They do display so many humanlike characteristics that we can tend to anthropomorphize them, and I do understand the desire to connect with them. We see bear jams in bear country, with tourists taking photos and trying to get close to these animals, but people don’t realize the potential harm they are subjecting bears to with this behaviour.

You create interesting textures and have collage elements in your work.

How does this process evolve from piece to piece?

I have always loved textile arts, and my love of incorporating collage elements in my work stems from a desire to create texture and depth in my work that isn’t always achievable with paint only. I tend to use it more in my figure and landscape work, where the layers of texture can create a depth that lends itself to the narrative quality that often comes through in that work. Often I in-

corporate it into the landscape in the Wild Things imagery, as I like to create a rich textural environment to balance the animals, which are often very simple in form. I usually make my design decisions during the process— most of my paintings begin as a thumbnail sketch in my sketchbook and then I dive in; I’m usually impatient to begin working, as the magic usually happens on canvas during the process.

So do you ever work from observation while creating wildlife paintings?

I very rarely sketch from life, except for a few times at the zoo.

Time is almost always a factor, and so I always have my camera on me and take hundreds of photos when I’m out and about. I rarely have opportunities to take the photos I want for my paintings, so I usually work with the photos I take of landscape and its elements, and then put my animals into that landscape or mindscape. I have been very fortunate to have had photographers share their animal photos with me. Generally, I prefer to let my imagination have complete reign over my compositions. For example, the mountain goat I painted for the show is a compilation of photos I took at the Calgary Zoo, the Crowsnest River by my house, and Galiano Island.

The final painting is an image I have never actually seen, but imagine coming across on a hike.

drive to, and through, the Yukon and expect it will be an “overview” trip that will leave me wanting to plan a more extensive visit to the area. I will have my camera in tow, and look forward to possible wildlife viewings and just taking in the expansive scenery. It will be thrilling.

Finally, why do you think people identify so strongly with the wildlife in your paintings?

I like to think that people feel the sense of the wonder and respect that I feel when I create my portraits, and that perhaps the face-to-face element in my paintings creates a connection. It is not uncommon for people to get emotional when viewing the portraits, and I have been so fortunate to have had many people share their stories with me, both in person and through email, when they come across the imagery and feel compelled to write to me. How lucky am I? Kari Lehr’s show Wild Things opens at North End Gallery on the corner of Front and Steele in Whitehorse on the 7th of September at 5 p.m. The show continues until the end of the month.

Tell us about your most exciting wildlife encounter.

My most memorable wildlife encounter, to date, was at the end of our four-day hike on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail on Vancouver Island. We rounded the bend to find a beautiful big black bear feeding contentedly on salal berries. He wasn’t remotely interested in us, and after observing him and assessing the situation, we passed by within a few feet of him and went on our way. I have never seen a grizzly while hiking, but every sighting, whether from the car or on our Knight Inlet trip, is magical to me. I still love seeing deer in our yard, and recently have observed a beautiful doe with her twins who have been hanging around a neighbourhood close to my studio.

ork and bourbon and peaches—cooked until soft, rich and sweet, with just a bit of acidity. This smashed pork is perfect along with some roasted potatoes or plain white rice. Although, to me, it makes a perfect open-faced sandwich on a toasted english muffin. Slice a couple of green onions, with maybe some hot sauce, and you’ve got a perfectly soothing meeting of crunch and soft.

Picnic shoulders are a great cut of pork—lots of meat, skin and connective tissue that, when cooked, correctly turns into beautiful, soft and moist meat. One of the issues with this awesome cut of meat is that in order for it to really shine, you have to cook it for a very long time. And if you don’t have a plan, using this super-delicious (very inexpensive) cut is banished to weekend cooking, at best. Or never even brought home from the store, at worst … unless you have a pressure cooker. Pressure cookers are a tool used to cook pretty much anything under pressure generated by the heat and steam produced from cooking. They have gotten a bad reputation over the years because when they are used incorrectly they’re known to explode. But if used correctly, they can take tougher cuts that were once only special-occasion foods and bring them into the realm of weeknight cooking. I’ve seen the Instant Pot for sale all over town. This is a great place to take that particular new kitchen tool for a spin.

Once pork is cool enough to handle, remove the bone using your hands, then coarsely chop (or shred, or slice—up to you!) and place the meat back into the reduced sauce to simmer for a few minutes. Then taste for seasoning and serve.

Melt butter over mediumhigh heat in the top of your pressure cooker, then add onion and garlic and cook until beginning to brown, about 3 minutes. Add peaches, sugar, vinegar, bourbon and water and bring to a simmer, then place pork shoulder on top and seal your pressure cooker. Once cooker is pressurized, cook over high pressure for 90 minutes, remove from heat and allow the pressure to naturally release.

Let the harvest begin Knowing when to pick your apples is an important piece of the pie

The background green on these Prairie Suns will fade to pale gold when the apples ripen over the next couple of weeks If none of these names mean anything to you, don’t despair.

While I am now capable (on most days) of rattling off the names of all of the 60 or so varieties of apples we currently have under trial, I confess that when I first arrived in Klondike apple-land I could name only a couple I had read about in a seed catalogue. You won’t find Gala or Red Delicious here. This begs the question for any of the varieties we carry: So what does it taste like, when it’s ripe? I admit to being rather stumped at this question beyond super-sweet (Trailman and Noret) through to a balance of sweet-tart (Rescue, Norland, Parkland). By the by, they are all, in my humble opinion, delicious. It’s just that my vocabulary for tastes and aromas needs some work; perhaps I could work in some adjectives from our Scotch club cheat sheets—freshmown grass, or old books? More useful might be to try to match up our cultivars with familiar grocerystore stock. Fort Mac Mac is, well, a mac-type apple. Norland, Parkland and Norda could all hang out in the same boat as Gala and Fuji. Trailman and Noret are better compared to cherries on the sweetness scale.

These comparisons don’t really do our Yukon-hardy contingent justice however, as they are each wonderful in their own right ... it’s just a matter of finding out which one suits your palate.

Together, they do taste of fall … and winter, and spring and summer— because growing the trees and giving them the care they need to fruit in our less-than-ideal climate takes effort throughout the year. We’ll get to the winter part soon enough, but for now … let the harvest begin!

pletely brown seeds. Aroma is the third character, bringing the second sense into play, as fragrance develops with the final ripening. This is very developed in certain apples, such as Norda and Battleford.

Now we know when apples are ripe. So that’s when we pick them, right? Again, a seeming no-brainer, but there are options. As is the case with many fruits (think bananas in shipping containers), most apples keep better when picked a little shy of full maturity. Norland, for example, can gain two weeks of keeping ability if they are picked when the seeds are only half brown.

A fully ripe Norland straight off the tree is a fine thing, however, so if your crop is small enough to be devoured fresh, let it be so. The same could be said for Prairie Sun, Parkland, Rescue and other short-term keepers. Late apples harvested for longer-term storage, on the other hand, can actually taste better after a month in storage. This group includes Festive Treat and September Ruby. Autumn Delight and Norda can keep through to April, albeit with a little loss of flavour and texture, and do so better if picked a tad early.

All of these changes over time are, of course, subject to the vagaries of the season and storage conditions.

Autumn Delight and September Ruby are examples of apples that can hang on after maturity, whereas Battlefords drop the moment they ripen. The short-term keepers, in general, begin to deteriorate on the tree, so don’t wait for them to fall! Some apples, like Festive Treat and Prairie Sun are prone to dropping their fruit prematurely if they are carrying too heavy a crop (see article on fruit-thinning). Poor management of water and/or nutrition over the season can also trigger fruit drop at any point. If you have to go away for a moose hunt before apple harvest, it may be wise to engage the services of a young neighbour to watch your tree, unless it is a late storage apple.

couple of weeks ago, I was stayed in my tracks as I was strolling by one of our apple shelters. They’re coming, my nose told me as the fragrance of ripe fruit wafted out of the open door. I poked my head in. As luck would have it, beneath the laden branches lay a dropped apple that hadn’t yet been gnawed on by rodent or dog. A rose blush had been creeping over the sunny side of the Nordas for weeks, but the background of bright green was only just beginning to pale to yellow. I bit into the apple and closed my eyes. This is the taste of fall. For us, it is also a sort of validation for all the work we go through in the other three seasons to keep the trees healthy and happy. And, it is a reminder that we need to pick the darn apples.

Surely there is no art to this part of the apple project. You’ve planted an apple tree, fed it well, kept the dogs from peeing on it through the winter, protected its blooms and thinned its fruit … now we just pick, right? Sort of—the devil being, as always, in the details. Knowing when to pick is another learned skill, depending on the tree and the proposed use of the fruit. Just like berries, some apples hang on better than others once they ripen, while others need to be picked and eaten early lest they fall and turn to mush. Colour is only one aspect of ripening, and it has different facets: the blush of pink or red that we associate with a ripe apple can come on very early and is much more pronounced when fruit is exposed to sun. The background colour is the key to ripening—it will shift from green to pale yellow (e.g., Norland), bright yellow (e.g., Trailman) or cream (e.g., Parkland) when the apples are truly ripe. Some, like Rescue, go truly red in their entirety. If you must test early (and surely you must), note the colour of the seed.

The Yukon Ski Patrol is a dynamic, fun team that has a lot of involvement in the community and events ... so let’s take a look at what the seasons entail:

Here you can learn skills such as snow-machine handling in attending first aid calls.

Throughout the winter, there are other events that ski patrollers attend, such as the Canada Cup at Mount Sima, fat bike racing at Mount McIntyre, and much more. What better way to pass the deep, dark days of winter than by having some fun and seeing some incredible sunrises and sunsets in the process.

Winter At Mount Sima, the most wellknown activities of the ski patrol is to provide first aid and patrol.

Whether you are a downhill skier, a snowboarder or a telemarker, you can help, including anyone who wants to be based at the chalet, to provide support. Mount Sima, with its incredibly impressive freestyle parks, does tend to “invite” multiple injuries that keep first aiders busy. The perks of being a patroller include first and last runs down the mountain, a season ski pass, ski and snowboard lessons, ongoing training and education plus gaining new skills.

Yukon Ski Patrol members are advanced-care providers who deliver first aid at a number of events and festivals throughout the Yukon. Some of these events are the Klondike Road Relay, the 24 Hours of Light Mountain Bike Race, the Atlin Arts & Music Festival, and many more. The Yukon Ski Patrol also provides mountain bike patrol support at Mount Sima, throughout the summer sessions. However, mountain biking is not necessary, because the base hut can be manned in both summer and winter. While this is more useful in winter when it’s busy

What does a ski patroller do?

How to become a ski patroller

The first course offers 60 hours of online, in-class training in first aid and CPR. By the end of the course, you will be able to assess and treat a variety of injuries, provide airway management and deliver oxygen and other skills in a team environment.

For those keen on providing winter first aid, the on-snow training includes training in rescue techniques, ski and snowboard assessment and toboggan handling.

he 2018 Moosehide Gathering in Dawson City was, once again, a smashing success.

The local Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in relocated to Moosehide, two miles north of Dawson City on the Yukon River, during the gold rush of 1898, to escape the insanity of thirty-thousand lousy, drunken gold-hungry stampeders. It is a refuge for Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, and the biennial gathering is a symbol of their resilience. But, more than that, it is a shining light for all nations from across the North, beckoning us to celebrate together today for our children tomorrow.

Moosehide, a scattering of small cabins on the low-sloping Yukon River, wakes from a slumber into a hive of nonstop activity. Kids run amuck with no regard for time or order. Elders settle into cabin stoops, coffee cups in hand, and watch as the festival unfolds, the majestic Yukon River lulling them as they rock back in time, when life was pure and simple. Tourists and locals mingle like old neighbours. The mayor of Moosehide, an unassuming man in a mackinaw and baseball cap, named Ronald Johnson, smiles in delight. He’s lived another year to see his beloved village come to life.

I set my tent and send my kids off with their friends for an impromptu game of soccer. I find an old friend and plop down beside him without a word. We embrace and laugh. After a brief silence, we catch up between sips of tea.

We’ve known one another so long, that silence, too, is an old chum.

country and western music, but young enough to remember our folks putting up with our classic rock albums. After my second cup of tea, I ramble toward the river to where I know I’ll find a couple more “fixtures” of Moosehide,

I concede and take the lead. My

heart is proud to hear the drums, and even prouder to dance. The floor soon fills, and shouts of joy compete with the drums. There is something about the drum that is both primal and spiritual. The beat calls you to your feet, but the feeling goes through your heart, straight to your smile.

Later that night, the fiddles come out and people gather in the arbour for an evening of spectacular dancing by the Old Crow Dancers. I join fiddling sensation, Boyd Benjamin, and the Governor of the Yukon, Mr. Kevin Barr, onstage. I play bass while Kevin plays guitar. Boyd’s bow slides across the strings like a ball bearing, and the dancers answer his call, their beaded slippers becoming a blur as they dance to the “Red River Jig.” After the Old Crow Dancers finish their routine, we open the floor. This is my favourite part of the evening. We work the crowded dance floor into a blitz. An Elder holds her mouth as a barefoot hippie flops around the dance floor like a rag doll. I can’t help but yell into the microphone, “Hippies and Indians!” Everyone laughs. A gust of wind blows through the arbour.

I can’t help but think that the ghosts of our ancestors have come to join us on the dance floor.

Dennis Allen is an awardwinning filmmaker, forlorn songwriter and hopeless storyteller. He’s the only guy he knows who’s never seen the Stones.

Tracy and her beloved Labrador- Charlie

his is the story of a dog called Charlie, who was born in May 2008 and died in June 2018.

He was the companion of Tracy, who got him initially as her two girls really, really wanted a puppy. They promised to walk him, feed him and do all the things that were required. As is often the story, although the girls loved Charlie dearly, his daily care fell to mom.

Charlie (the puppy) loved to walk, but once he had had enough, he would just lay down and would not budge. He was very clear in his message—Small, tired, help! There were many days when the walker not only got great leg exercise, but a good biceps workout as well.

From sweet, rumbustious puppy to naughty, mischievous teenager ...

Tracy shared that Charlie (the teenager) was the “naughty boy” in the family and that the girls would often wail in despair, “Moooom!

Come get Charlieeee!” (the tiresome younger brother).

Charlie was, as Tracy said, the quintessential Labrador. All Labradors want to do is to please you, be with you and make you happy.

The daily (one-sided) dialogue with Charlie went something like this: What are we gonna do? Stay home?

Yay! That’s my favourite thing! Can I sit beside you? on you? behind you?

Where? We’re going out? Yay! I love going out! Are we walking? Can I roll in smelly stuff? Can I sit on you? No? How about just rest my head on you?

Cuddle? OMG! I love cuddling! I am so good at it!

No matter what Tracy wanted to do, Charlie was happy as long as he was with her.

Charlie demonstrated, early on, that he was in Tracy’s life to be a teacher of selflessness and unconditional love.

Every day, Charlie embodied these.

Charlie enjoying Carcross beach Charlie wanted to be friends with everyone—people, dogs, cats. He approached everyone with a wagging tail and an eager heart. If he met a dog that was not friendly, he was never offended or aggressive. He’d simply back off and carry on his way.

As a 95-pound dog, he was bigger than most but never used his size to intimidate.

While living in downtown Vancouver, for a brief period of time, Tracy would walk Charlie through the streets. He would walk up to

people and say, Hello, how great to meet you! On one occasion, there was a homeless man sitting on the street, with the usual rush of people going past without acknowledging or seeing him. But Charlie walked right up to him, gave him a big kiss on the cheek and looked him right in the eye, tail wagging. Tracy recalls that she saw a physical shift in the man who sat up a little taller, wrapped his arm around Charlie and said “Hey, buddy!” like they were long lost friends. She realized that on this busy street, in the middle of this city, nobody saw this man. He was “invisible” but, yet, Charlie had seen him and acknowledged him. So simple.

Charlie loved to swim and would keep going until he was completely exhausted. One day in the spring, while walking along the Miles Canyon trail, he paddled out in the water to get the stick Tracy had thrown, but he got the wrong one, which was, in fact, a branch of a tree embedded in the river.

Determined to bring that stick back, he tried desperately to swim to shore but was not making any headway.

Despite Tracy’s calls for him to let it go, he would not return empty-mouthed, even if it killed him. Tracy had to wade, waist deep, into the icy water, force his jaw open and pull him back to shore.

Charlie’s departure was sudden ...

He was diagnosed with nasal cancer, and it was only a week later that, with a nose bleed that would not abate, despite the injections, the ice packs and the vet’s help, Tracy made a heartbreaking decision. Holding him on her lap, she sang her favourite song to him and rubbed the soft velveteen spot between his eyes while Charlie left her side forever.

Tracy now understood the grief that people experience when losing an animal companion. Over the course of 10 years, Charlie taught her and everyone else who crossed his path about true unconditional love.

Charlie had moved through this world like a Buddha: no ego, no aggression, no judgement. Just pure, unadulterated love and joy.

He will be forever missed.

These photos were taken on July 29, 2018, from a Cessna 172 CFXJJ. The aircraft was

at roughly 8,000 feet as I flew over the Llellewyn Glacier at the south end of Atlin Lake. I flew from the lake, up the glacier to the Juneau ice cap and then back down to the lake.

Camera: GoPro Hero 3+ in a Eagle 360 camera pod under the aircraft. The camera was shooting 1080 video at 30 fps.

Today’s the day the teddy bears have their clinic

he inaugural Teddy Bear Clinic in November 2017 was a hit with families and medical professionals alike as about 200 families came through the door to get checkups for their important stuffie friends. Those attendance

numbers, and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents and children, made it essential to try to make it an annual event.

There was never really any doubt that the they would host another clinic, according to Yukon Hospi-

tal Foundation president Karen Forward.

“It was really well received by the community, and a few kids noted that if it didn’t happen again, I would be in trouble,” she said with a laugh.

Last year’s event was timed in November, to coincide when visitors could get in with the new fluoroscopy machine. The move to September permits some outside features that Forward explained were in the works. The new Yukon Hospital Foundation campaign is raising funds for a simulation centre that helps train all emergency services staff, so they are partnering with Whitehorse firefighters and hope to have a truck in attendance this year.

The event itself provides a special opportunity for children to develop a positive relationship with hospitals and medical professionals via a surrogate, their favourite stuffie.

“There is a need for kids to visit the hospital, not just for pokes and being sick,” Forward explained. “This is chance to thank our donors and help their kids to have a fun time.”

The full scope of what stuffies will be checked for hasn’t been finalized, but it’s developed in cooperation with the Whitehorse General Hospital as to what can be accessed on the day. But they make sure every stuffie who comes in gets a checkup, and they keep careful count. Each stuffie checks in and gets a hospital wristband; or, in some cases, a necklace.

The Teddy Bear Clinic gives kids an opportunity to have a fun and positive experience with doctors and hospitals The event requires from 15 to 20 volunteers, the majority being off-shift doctors and nurses who volunteer their time to help out.

“We are still sourcing volunteers,” Forward said. “It’s really great to have doctors and nurses interact with kids this way.”

Last year, there was a steady flow of visitors all day between the clinic hours of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and no stuffie was sent home unchecked. The event is open to all members of the public and free due to the support of Goldcorp, Victoria Gold and Yukon Heat.

All stuffies are welcome, not just

Walk, hike, stroll …

Walk …

“You weren’t in any hurry to walk,” my mother said as she showed me a photo of myself at 15 months, happily sitting on a blanket in the yard.

But after a late start, there was no stopping me. I walked to school almost every day of my long student career, walked to work when distances allowed, took a daily walk to keep body and spirits in shape and walked around cities, along coastlines, and through national parks on holidays.

Walking the Camino de Santiago, a 1200-year-old pilgrimage route across Spain, was a natural next step, so to speak. The portions of the Camino that my husband and I have done (and there are several major branches of trail to choose from) have ranged from 600–900 kilometres in length.

That’s a month or so of walking.

I’ve always used the word walking rather than hiking when talking or writing about the Camino.

Although most do the Camino with a backpack on, the pack isn’t very heavy (no tent or cooking gear).

options. And there are cafés, restaurants, snack trucks and grocery stores galore. Pilgrims are well cared for along the Camino.

And everyone along the Camino is considered a pilgrim, which is another reason I use the word walk. Whether or not one’s motivation for doing the trail has anything to do with history or religion or spirituality, there is something very meditative about getting up every morning to put one foot ahead of the other for hours on end. It can be very peaceful. The word hike doesn’t have the same feel.

Hike …

After walking my fifth Camino this spring, on a route that had some serious steep ups and downs, I started thinking about the Chilkoot Trail. I had hiked that old First Nation trade route and gold rush trail from Dyea, Alaska, into the interior, four times before, but the last time was about 12 years ago. Could I still do it now that I’m a senior citizen?

With legs toned up from the

hilly Camino, and a back used to carrying weight (although not as much as the Chilkoot requires), I figured there’s no time like the present. Why not do a fifth Chilkoot after a fifth Camino?

My husband and I loaded our packs and drove to Skagway, early the next morning, to claim two of the eight available walk-in spaces per day. We filled out the forms, bought train tickets to return to Skagway from Bennett, went through the orientation session and were on our way.

I felt fit as a fiddle for the first few hours to Finnegan’s Point, but my energy started to fade as we made our way to Canyon City where we ate a quick cold dinner. Then we had to push on to Pleasant Camp, because to make our train we’d have to reach Bennett in three-and-a-half days.

That night in our tent, I got charley horse cramps in my legs every time I tried to curl up on my side.

Long story short, the hike was much harder than I had remembered, despite new stone staircases in a few spots that used to be intense boulder scrambles. Maybe I found it more difficult simply because I’m older. Maybe it was due to warm weather, soft slippery

snow fields and some whitewater creek crossings. Maybe it was because I’d been spoiled by the Camino where it’s possible to really walk as opposed to constantly having to pick one’s steps over rocks and roots and along edges.

Or maybe hiking is like childbirth— once it’s over, you don’t remember the hard parts.

Stroll …

My knees hurt for about two weeks after finishing the Chilkoot Trail hike, so since then I’ve savored easygoing morning doggy walks and evening strolls. These are nice times to chat with walking buddies or neighbours. Strolling definitely has a social dimension, whereas the Camino encourages quiet reflection and the Chilkoot involves such serious huffing and puffing that it’s hard to talk.

Earlier in the day I had marked, with yellow chalk arrows reminiscent of Camino waymarkers, a route from the Wharf, along the waterfront to Earl’s, up Chilkoot Way and across Two Mile Hill, then back along the clay cliffs and down Main Street, a nice hour-long jaunt on a sunny evening. There was a lot of “Camino talk” among those who’ve recently done the trail and those who are going to Spain soon.

The social part of the evening’s stroll continued for hours as walkers enjoyed cold drinks and appies together afterward.

The Whitehorse chapter of the Canadian Company of Pilgrims hosts three events each year: the St. James Day walk, in late July; a Camino dinner and slide show in November; and Camino 101, an information evening in March.
