ithin the Wrangell Mountains of Alaska, just 40 kilometres west of the Yukon–Alaska border, south of Beaver Creek, are two mountains— Churchill and Bona. The two peaks are about two kilometres apart, about 5,000 metres (16,500 feet) tall. Together they form a large massif, or group of peaks, with large icefields radiating off in all directions. Icefields to the east of the mountains are the source of the White River, which runs through the Yukon near Beaver Creek.

Bona-Churchill is a volcano.

There are two known eruptions: the first occurred around 150–500 AD; and the younger and much larger one, about 800 AD. At the time of the first eruption, the prevailing wind was from the south. The eruption blew volcanic ash high

into the sky and it was carried downwind. Fallout from this plume can be traced straight north along the Alaska–Yukon border. In the Dawson–Eagle area, there is a layer of ash about three centimetres thick. It is over seven centimetres thick near Snag, Yukon, and thicker near the source.

The younger second eruption was estimated to be about fivetimes larger than the first one. The winds at that time were coming from the west. Ash is visible all the way between Mayo, in the north, to the British Columbia border, in the south, and past the Northwest Territories–Yukon border in the east. Around Whitehorse, you can find between two to three centimetres of ash.

Scientists have now traced fallout, from the Bona-Churchill eruption, to Europe. Ash is like

a fingerprint for volcanoes. The chemical composition, the rock type (what shapes the particles are), is unique to each volcano.

The White River Ash was first found overseas in Irish peat bogs.

It could not be correlated with usual sources of ash in Europe (volcanoes in Iceland). It was not until the past decade that it was identified through detailed chemical analysis as coming from BonaChurchill. The ash is unusually high in the elements chlorine, aluminium and iron, making it distinct.

The ash has now also been found in Greenland ice cores, Newfoundland, Sweden and Germany. When you look at magnified pictures of the White River Ash, you see the particles are full of holes—vesicular. This makes them

It has been shown, by studying modern eruptions, that as little as two to three centimetres of ash can cause major vegetation damage. Five centimetres of ash will break trees. There is evidence that the eruption actually oc-

Bows and arrows were in use by coastal Indigenous Peoples, at the time of the eruption, but not by interior hunters. After spending time on

very light and able to travel far with the winds. The ash is actually a combination of pumice, a lightcoloured rock called rhyolite, and volcanic glass. The feel was described by early geologists as “a gritty-feeling powder.”

The reason ash has been detected over 7,000 kilometres from its source is that it was a very large eruption. It has been estimated that the eruption was the fourthlargest global eruption in the past 2,000 years. About 50 cubic kilometres of material were erupted.

That is a volume the size of downtown Whitehorse, with about five kilometres of rock on top. It was about 30 times larger than Mount St. Helens, in 1980.

The dates of the second and largest eruption at Bona-Churchill have been accurately dated with the use of trees, near the volcano, which were buried and preserved under metres of ash at the time of eruption. Carbon dating of the wood indicated averages around 800 AD. There were people living in the immediate area of the eruption and in the southern Yukon, in general. Indigenous Peoples had been living in the area for thousands of years. Ancestors of today’s Tutchone people were right in the path of the worst of the ash cloud.

That period still exists in the oral tradition of the Indigenous Peoples of southern Yukon. It is estimated that the number of people directly affected was several hundred.

The eruption would have happened without warning, the sky would suddenly go dark, ashinduced lightning might be occurring, it would be difficult to breath. The eruption probably occurred just over a series of days.

It would have been frightening not only to humans, but for all wild-

Archaeologists and Indigenous Peoples from western North America have long recognized the similarity of the languages of the Navajo, in the southwest, to the Athapaskan languages of northern Canada. It is thought that when people were driven out of the southern Yukon, due to the eruption, one group of people headed directly to the coast in Alaska and British Columbia, and another group headed south to a new land in the dry interior of southwestern United States.

the coast, people migrated back to the interior Yukon, when it was supporting life again. They took the new technology home with them.

Biologists have found, by DNA testing of ice-patch caribou dung, that there was a dramatic shift in caribou genetics, also occurring 1,200 years ago. What was left of the original herds moved out when their food supply was covered by ash. Replacement caribou, years later, were from a distinctively different herd.

There are lots of places in the southern Yukon with good exposures of the White River Ash. You can dig almost anywhere in undisturbed ground and see traces, usually around 40 centimetres down.

The North Klondike Highway, between Twin Lakes and Pelly Crossing, has many visible sections. The area between Five Finger Rapids and Minto has the best sections, some to 20 centimetres thick.

Closer to the source, on the north Alaska Highway, you can see the ash on the west side of the Donjek River. From there to Pickhandle Lake, there are good exposures as well.

The Beaver Creek area is on the very edge of both the north and west ash plumes, and there is not as much ash there as you would expect, it being the closest community to the volcano.

Could it erupt again? It could, of course, but there is an extremely low probability this will occur in our lifetimes. The consequences of such an eruption today would be staggering. Not only would there be the health and environmental effects of the ash, but today it would cripple electronic and mechanical systems. Disruptions to air travel in Europe from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, in Iceland, cost the airline industry $3.3 billion in 2010.

As you travel the southern Yukon, keep a lookout for the White River Ash in road and stream and river cuts. If you are less adventuresome, next time you are at the Yukon Inn, in Whitehorse, see if you can find the modern-day pictograph that depicts the eruption 1,200 years ago.

yrell Johnson’s debut novel, The Wolves of Winter, begins with that scene, which introduces us to Lynn (she hates being called Gwen or Gwendolynn) McBride and her circumstances.

At 23 years of age, she and her extended family have been living in the Yukon wilderness, north of the Blackstone River area and west of the former Dempster Highway, for the last seven years.

It’s been a hardscrabble existence in a world changed by nuclear war, the resulting climate change to a colder world, and the need to stay

north and isolated due to the savage flu that has ravaged the world’s population centres.

The cold seems to keep the flu at bay for the most part, though Lynn and her father did finally catch it while they were living in Eagle, Alaska. It was his death and the arrival of the Immunity hunters that prompted their escape to the even more remote Yukon wilderness.

By then, the climate had already chilled, but it was the flu—and some other secrets that Lynn only learns as an adult—that sent them north, first to Eagle, and then farther into the bush. By that time, anything resembling the season called summer was pretty much a fading memory.

This dystopian first novel (book one of a proposed trilogy) is Johnson’s first published novel. It’s set in the Yukon, but he hadn’t actually been here until he came to Whitehorse for last month’s Yukon Writers’ Festival, so he was a little nervous during his reading at the Live Words event on May 2.

“At every other reading that I’ve done, no one knows much about the Yukon, so now is the test,” he said. “If I’ve got anything wrong, just don’t tell me.

Thank you for having me here, It’s been fun so far.”

The book is being compared to such young-adult novels as James Dashner’s The Maze Runner, and Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, but you could also think of Stephen King’s The Stand (as far as the disease subplot is concerned).

Lynn has gone through most of her teen years without anyone around other than her immediate family and the close friends they’ve travelled with. The only male she’s not related to is way too young for her, and too much

like a brother, so when the stranger named Jax wanders into their lives, she has all sorts of stirrings that she’s really not equipped to deal with psychologically or emotionally.

The external problem in the novel (other than the Conrad referred to earlier) comes from the group called Immunity, short for Disease Containment and Immunity Advancement, who are hunting down anyone who seems to have survived the flu, and are especially keen to find Jax. There are some oddities about the book. There are no Gwich’in people anywhere near the family, which seems strange as this area was their traditional ground—but perhaps the flu was hard on First Nations people. There’s really no way Lynn could know.

The other thing is that there are very few wolves in this story.

They’re heard off in the distance and Lynn does cross paths with one later on, but their absence makes the title choice seem odd.

While Johnson intends there to be sequels, and there are loose plot threads galore, this feels like a story that’s complete enough that you’re not left with a cliffhanger. It was satisfying as a single novel, which isn’t always the case with this sort of book.

he Yukon is full of dog lovers, from all walks of life.

Our dogs not only provide companionship, many are working members of the family whose owners rely on them for “paw power” and protection.

I’ve always been a little in awe of those who work with their K-9 best friends; it seems to me they have a deep bond with their animals, and their dogs enjoy a sense of purpose beyond measure.

Local trapper and fire lookout observer Robert Stitt, I think, would agree. “My family got a beagle when I was fifteen, and I don’t think there’s been much of a stretch since, if at all, that I didn’t have one or more dogs.”

Since 1994, Robert has been a fan and an owner of one of the rarest dogs in the world, the Canadian Eskimo (Inuit) dog (quimmiq or qimmit in the Inuit languages). According to Wikipedia, the Eskimo dog is “an Arctic breed of working dog, which is often considered to be one of North America’s oldest and rarest remaining purebred Indigenous domestic canines.” They are known to be affectionate, loyal, alert, intelligent, tough and brave. A fitting dog for someone who spends five months of the year in the bush.

“Are they working dogs or pets?”

I asked Robert, referring to his most recent Eskimo dogs. “I don’t believe they can’t be both. That’s my firm opinion,” he responds, continuing, “I was a professional hunting guide for years for people with high-quality hunting dogs… I’ve dealt with many breeders. I’ve often asked them, ‘By having a field trial champion dog as part of the family, does it impact their ability to be a field trial winning hunting dog?’ They all said the same thing: ‘No, assuming it has the genetics, what is important is that they get to work in the field with the

different species of birds.’”

Originally from James Bay, in northern Ontario, Robert moved to the Yukon in 2008—with his dogs, of course. His current dog, Meeka, goes to work (or “summer camp” as he calls it) at the Tagish fire tower and into his remote trapline in the fall.

“Typically in early September (this year I am going in August), I would go to my very remote trapline east of Watson Lake. I’m there for five months. It’s very expensive to fly in, so you go in once and you come out once.

I’ve had three dogs in there with me.”

We’ve met to discuss Meeka, but the conversation turns affectionately

to his previous K-9 companions, Max and Shadow, now deceased. Robert recounts, in detail, how Shadow died in his arms (she was in good shape but had an obvious developing cancer).

Max mourned her sitting on his house and howling like a wolf—the most mournful long howl—for weeks.

The death took place days before Robert’s annual trip to Ontario, and he thought about cancelling his plans. Instead, he left Max in the care of trusted neighbours/friends and contacted Brian Ladoon, a known Eskimo dog breeder out of Churchill, Manitoba. Perhaps he could return with a new playmate for Max… From southern Ontario, Robert found a seat sale and “quickly organized and mobilized and found a hostel to stay at and went [on three

flights!] to Churchill, to meet Brian.”

After three days there, he left with puppy Meeka. She was so cute “she practically caused a riot in the Winnipeg airport,” said Robert. Upon arrival, back home in the Yukon, “she very quickly became infatuated with ‘Uncle Max.’” “I do have some very serious regrets about my trip to Churchill,” he said, seriously, “and that is that I didn’t take her brother.” Max died a year after Meeka came home, and now Robert has two more pups on back order from Brian.

All of his Eskimo dogs have helped haul gear by sleds and have “sounded the alarm” on more than one occasion.

Most notable was a malnourished black grizzly and a brazen bull moose… both of which walked right into his camp.

His tale of the moose gives me the shivers…

October 2010, beautiful sunny day, and I’m in the yard on my trapline doing something, safe as if I’m in the womb, when all of a sudden Shadow starts barking violently, she’s at the edge of the clearing... all her hackles are up... I saw something in the bush and it materialized to be a cow moose.

It slowly turned and started walking towards me… “Stitt’s law of survival,” grab your gun, which I did… the moose was way too close for my comfort and I said to Shadow, “Out of here,” and the moose put its ears down and gave this grunt, and it launched at me like a freight train. I turned to run. I felt this thing bearing down on me and I rotated my body and pulled the trigger.

Clear miss. I lost my balance, fell down, smashed my knee. This all happened on a well-used area near my workshop, and the ground was icy. This cow moose was slipping and sliding, totally incapable of getting a good purchase, otherwise I wouldn’t be here today. And then it just backed up, like a Michael Jackson-style backup, turned, went about 30 yards and started browsing like a cow. ...continued on page 15

H

istoric Miles Canyon holds a special place in the story of Whitehorse. Today’s picturesque hiking trails, pedestrian suspension bridge and impressive rock cliffs are a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. And the historical struggles of gold-seekers navigating the dangerous channel, during the Klondike Gold Rush, add to the unique story of the area.

Each summer, the Yukon Conservation Society invites Yukon artists to participate in a two-day workshop to create pieces inspired by this special place, and those creations will go on display this month at Northern Front Studio.

Yukon artists Nicole Bauberger and Josée Carbonneau were two of the participants at this year’s event that took place on July 13 and 14. Both artists found a different aspect of the canyon that inspired their work. Bauberger found inspiration in the trail network around Miles Canyon, which spreads out up and down the river to spots like Canyon City and Schwatka Lake, while Carbonneau looked back at the struggles of the pioneers making the journey to the goldfields long ago.

“I had an idea that I wanted to experiment with,” said Bauberger, who wanted to explore the trail network. “Jessica Vallenga and I had done a webbed space, an indoor installation of our doily webs, and I was spinning off and using long crocheted line.

“I got distracted from the original line idea. The bridge is such a big part.”

Nicole Bauberger used old glass shelves from Yukon Artists at Work to create the shards for her candle ice-themed art Bauberger’s resulting artwork replicates the walls of the canyon, the candle ice that might form on the frozen water and then water itself underneath.

Carbonneau is known for her unique artwork using fish skins.

For Carbonneau, it was a special chance to be inspired in an area that she enjoys.

“I had never done that kind of demonstration,” she said. “Two days in nature; it was so beautiful.”

But it was the historic stories of rafters braving the canyon during the gold rush that inspired her work this summer.

“I have been biking those trails and going there walking, and [have] always been impressed by the people who were travelling on the river,” Carbonneau explained that is why she created the raft.

Bauberger was already thinking of ideas to explore next year, as Created at the Canyon provides a special opportunity for artists to

branch out and try new things.

“You can’t actually paint and talk, the two processes would be fighting with each other,” Bauberger said. “I wanted to put up an idea and speak with, and interact with, people.”

She says that the special opportunity to be paid for the workshop allows artists to go beyond their normal work, like making a painting to sell. It is in some ways support research and development time to try new things.

Italian Chicken Cacciatore Ingredients 3 ½ boneless chicken pieces 3 tbsp. white flour ⅛ tsp. pepper 3 tbsp. cooking oil ½ cup white onions, chopped 3 tbsp. mushrooms, sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 16 oz. can whole peeled tomatoes ¾ cup cooking wine ½ tsp. Italian herbs

Method Coat chicken in flour and pepper. Heat the oil in a large pot and then add chicken and brown on both sides. Remove the chicken and add onions, mushrooms and garlic. Cook until onions are soft.

Return the chicken to the pot and add tomatoes, wine and herbs.

Cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

Uncover and simmer for 30 minutes. Serve over a bed of rice. I recommend boneless chicken.

Serves 4

Method Add chicken to hot oil in wok.

Stir fry until cooked. Add green peppers, onions and garlic. Stirfry until chicken is tender and vegetables are crisp. Add cornstarch to tomatoes and blend well. Add soya sauce to chicken mixture. Cook and stir until mixture comes to a boil, then boil for one minute. Stir in rice and salt.

Cover and remove from heat. Allow to stand five minutes.

Serves 4

Magic under the mountains

Augusto is coming!

The second-annual children’s arts and music festival, from August 10–12 in Haines Junction, features 28 workshops for children

H

aines Junction is gearing up for the second-annual Augusto Children`s Festival. With 28 workshops for kids aged five to 12, on puppet-making, magic, Southern Tutchone dance, circus skills, ukulele playing … and many more. It’s the Yukon’s only arts and music festival for children. Darlene Sillery is one of the organizers and gives some background information: “I think many people still miss the Alsek Music Festival, which ran for seventeen years. I believe festivals are great for small communities. Haines Junction is a perfect fit for [a] children’s festival and Augusto!” Some of the Augusto Festival board members are former organizers of the Alsek Music Festival in Haines Junction.

Sillery said that they are happy about the wonderful facilities at the St. Elias Convention Centre, the perfect location for a community demographic with lots of young families and active grandparents. There are 120 tickets for sale (for ages 12 and under) and, with parents, volunteers and presenters, Augusto expects 400 people to be directly involved in the festival.

Sillery said she cannot tell what the highlight will be, because there are so many.

Saturday night’s feature performance, with magician Sheldon Casavant and ventriloquist Kellie Haines, is going to be amazing.

Casavant, who is based in Edmonton, is recognized as one of Canada’s top magicians. He has performed in the U.S., Mexico, Asia and in over 600 shows in Japan.

And Kellie Haines is a multi-talented ventriloquist/entertainer with a background in acting, singing and dancing.

“We have a great mix of performing and visual arts workshops.

[There is a] Milk Jug workshop with artist Leslie Leong, who will show children how they can create a swan or a flower out of milk jugs,” Sillery said.

Haines Junction artist-in-residence Henry Navarro will show children how to design fashion out of ideas from their surroundings.

Navarro is spending three months with his wife and son in Haines Junction.

Making dreamcatchers with Karrie Brown will be another festival highlight.

And then there is Toddler Town, for ages four and under, which is a mini festival in itself with a full schedule of short concerts, craft activities, colouring stations, storybook corners and the amazing Cardboard Village to explore.

For many kids, the takeaways from the festival are great, and this year will include the opportunity to print their own festival t-shirt.

Augusto will take place from August 10–12 at the St. Elias Convention centre. More info and tickets are available at www.augustokids.ca.

Do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?

If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel.

There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

his August, Whitehorse heavy metal music enthusiasts will be treated to a blast from the past, augmented with an infusion of new blood.

Heavy-gigging juggernaut Warrmauth will be returning from hiatus to play a very special one-off show at the Jarvis Street Saloon on August 10, supported by two newer local groups—Swamp Sex Robots, and Church of Zombie.

Formed in 2013, Warrmauth’s costume-clad and masked performance of 90s-influenced death metal and their energetic, entertaining live show saw them playing quite consistently for a time following their inception. However, due to post-secondary school out of the territory, the band has been on indefinite hiatus since last fall.

Manus “CuddleBunny” Hopkins, lead vocalist and guitarist for Warrmauth, is thrilled to be reuniting with his bandmates and has high hopes for the upcoming show.

“We actually weren’t too sure if we were going to be doing more as a band this summer, but Paris [Pick from Swamp Sex Robots] told us she really wanted to put together this show and give us the headlining spot, so we agreed to get Warrmauth going again for a sort of one-off reunion gig!”

Hopkins assures us that all the outrageous costumes, masks and stage antics that Warrmauth is known for won’t be left by the wayside—they are essential to the band’s performance aesthetic.

“When we were getting ready to play our first show, we all agreed that we wanted to have a visual aspect to our shows, so between the music and the stage show, even though we were just a little teenage band starting out, people would walk away from the shows remembering our band!” Hopkins

“We, of course, didn’t have the budget for anything too fancy, but making costumes out of cheap materials and whatever you have lying around is always a good bet.

We all grew up listening to some really theatrical bands, from GWAR and Slipknot, to KISS and Mötley Crüe, and [we] just don’t want that aspect of heavy metal to be lost.”

Without giving too much away, Hopkins reveals that Warrmauth will be tackling an ambitious set list and have a couple of brandnew stage tricks up their sleeves.

“I think when people come to see us they know there’s gonna be a lot of energy and excitement, which will definitely still be there, but this time the show itself will be bigger. Probably the biggest we’ve done so far.”

Hopkins is also very much looking forward to the two new bands opening the bill, groups also known for high-energy, creatively comedic performances. Swamp Sex Robots is a duo featuring Paris Pick from Paris Pick & The Pricks, and Aiden Tentrees of Soda Pony, while Church of Zombie is a hard rock outfit featuring members from veteran Whitehorse groups Off The Menu and The Midnight Sons.

“I think the reason these three bands make such a good bill together is because, while having a variety of music styles, these are three local bands that always put on a visual show with the music as well,” said Hopkins.

He hopes that this show, among others, will usher back an era of rock and roll in Whitehorse, which seems to have fallen a little by the wayside in recent years. This recession is even more noticeable in the local metal scene, a more niche market that has dwindled

drastically over the course of the last decade.

“I think rock ’n’ roll is gonna take over again in these next few years, and there are some serious contenders to lead the charge around here,” Hopkins anticipates. “In terms of metal, it would be really great to see some more shows happening and newer bands coming out—and I think what we need for that is younger bands starting up, like we were in high school.

“There are plenty of guys who have been at it a while, playing today, but I think it’s been an awesome thing to have new bands playing their first gigs alongside the more experienced bands. That way, people going to the shows would be getting to find new music too, and my hope is that there will be enough metal bands that one moving away or splitting up doesn’t stall the scene so much.”

Hopkins hopes that anyone and everyone comes out to view this one-off performance, as it will be the only one until potentially next year. He’s grateful that the music fans of Whitehorse have not forgotten Warrmauth.

“I can’t wait to rock with you all again!”

Playing possum … when trees play tricks on us

ast spring was an odd one for us ... As bloom time approached, we watched for swelling buds on our apple trees.

We saw some, but many trees kept us in suspense. As the pink petals poked through the ends of the buds on the trees that were coming out, we began to get a little concerned at those that were still sleeping.

When the petals on the awoken trees spread wide to reveal pollen-studded stamens and sticky pistils, we started to worry. By June, many trees had followed blossoms with leaves, but there were still some holdouts. We nicked the bark and it was green.

The buds and the stems showed no sign of desiccation and there was no damage to the trunks.

The trees looked healthy—except that they were still perfectly dormant as mid-summer came and went. Some of these eventually did bloom, and leaf out, as late as July. While no good for producing fruit, at least it assuaged our fears for their survival.

After a while, I opened my door and no moose...But then, all of sudden, she comes screaming around the corner, her eyes are bugged out and her mane is all up, her ears are flat; there’s nothing more frightening!

I just happened to have my camera with a telephoto lens there by the door. I took two pictures, I shut the door and I said, “Well, there’s a lot of projects I can do indoors this evening.”...

Next morning she was gone.

This year, many of those same trees bloomed and set leaves on the same schedule as everyone else and are well on their way to ripening a crop. What did we learn? Patience, young grasshopper. Mysterious are the ways of plants, and when it comes to trees, we wait until they are well and truly dead before we cut them down.

We dug up a couple of the smallest trees that exhibited this strange behaviour, to try and learn more about it, and discovered that some of the roots had died, presumably during the course of the winter. Our working hypothesis is that, in the spring, the trees were so focused on root repair and regrowth that the blooms and shoots were put on the back burner. Ironically, we have seen the same behaviour in a severely over-fertilized tree. In that case, we think this is because the tree doesn’t need leaves—the function of the leaves, remember, is to turn sunlight into sugar. If the tree has enough food in storage, why put energy into growing leaves?

When a tree fails to “wake up” in the usual course of things, the first thing to do is to assess “how dead” it is. Is it really, like the parrot, just resting?

Nicking the bark with a fingernail will ascertain if that layer of cells is alive (if it isn’t green, there’s a problem). Healthy buds are plump and glossy, as are healthy twigs. Given our climate, winter damage, here and there, is part of growing fruit trees and often can be seen on the tips of branches.

Prune dead branches back to a healthy-looking bud, as you would any tree in the spring. Poke around in the soil at the base of the tree: healthy roots are solid, with the outer layer firmly attached to the inner, while in dead roots this sloughs off or is brown and watery.

If the top of the tree looks good but there is some root death, letting the tree come around in its

own time (no heavy feeding) is often the best course, especially for a mature tree. A very small tree can be lifted, the dead roots removed, and replanted. We suspect that dead tissue can have the effect of poisoning live tissue, just as it can in the human body. Any tree that has lost a substantial portion of root should have its top pruned back to limit demands on the recovering roots.

If the roots are healthy and strong, shoots are coming out from the base of the tree, but the upper branches are dead, a failure of the grafted portion (which gives the fruit) of the tree is likely.

See if you can determine the graft line (often a change in size of the trunk or a visible change in bark colour), usually four to eight inches from the ground. If there are any shoots above that line, cut the dead tree back to them and remove suckers from below the graft line, gradually, to promote regrowth of the grafted portion.

Remember that berry and cherry bushes, in contrast, are not grafted, and so can come back from the roots just fine.

A Yukon apple tree may not look like the trees we drew as kids; but, let’s face it, neither do the ones in modern orchards, grown to fit as many trees to an acre as possible. And with our trees, each kink in a branch tells a story that we can laugh over a little in the years we get to watch the harvest succeed.

Reaping that harvest in the years that it comes is a sweet reward for patience and a bit of work … mostly patience. In the years it doesn’t, we shrug and know that following the snow, spring will come again—and with it, blossoms.

Robert chuckles happily, his affection for this unique breed and his own dogs, both as pets and workmates, couldn’t be more obvious.

Yukon gold at the Games of Fundy Yukon’s contingent is getting ready to compete at the Canada 55+ Games on the Bay of Fundy

W

hen the Canada Senior Games (CSG) were inaugurated on a small scale in Regina in 1996, the Yukon Territory was nowhere to be found because “Yukoners hadn’t heard about these Games yet,” according to the official history of the event.

However, that changed for the second go-round in 1998 at Medicine Hat, AB, where we sent 38 competitors who won 27 medals including the first Spirit of the Games (SOG) award. but 35 intrepid Yukoners travelled to Summerside, PEI, in 2002 and came home with 24 medals and an invitation to host the 2004 Games in Whitehorse, a decision which proved serendipitous for the future of the CSG. The Territory exploded onto the scene in 2004 with over 100 competitors in the home Games and a whopping 500 local volunteers to pull them off. It marked the end of CSG and the beginning of Canada 55+ Games.

At Portage la Prairie in 2006,

83 Yukoners won 35 medals and a second SOG award; and at Dieppe, NB, in 2008, 82 won 45 medals including nine gold and yet another SOG, the third in just five appearances as the Yukon lived up to our reputation for being spirited and lively competitors, which included introducing cheerleaders to the Games.

In 2010 at Brockville, ON, a new Yukon record for Biggest Road Squad was set as 104 participants and nine cheerleaders won 70 medals, a short-lived medal record as 77 competitors in 2012 at Sydney, NS, won 79, the only time Yukon averaged over a medal per person and placed fourth in the national standings–also a record.

In 2014 at Strathcona County, AB (Edmonton), another record was set for largest road contingent as 129 participants, 15 cheerleaders and three mission staff accounted for 68.5 medals (with no explanation of how somebody won half a medal) and a fourth SOG award.

At the 2016’s in Brampton, ON, 96 athletes won 65 medals but 28 of them were gold, a new record, as the Yukon finally lived up to the reputation of our golden heritage of 1898.
