ukon Sourdough Rendezvous season begins in February, but for some people it is a year round commitment. The women of the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Cancan Line are arguably the most in-demand group during Rendezvous, and their appearance bookings have expanded to a year round schedule.

Cancan line co-managers Kate Davidson and Sara McPhee-Knowles are three year veterans and are responsible for keeping everything on track during the hectic Rendezvous season and organizing all the veterans for some of the year-round events.

“Being in cancan is a large time commitment and has really turned into a full-year commitment now,” Davidson said. “We are now being asked to put in appearances at different events throughout the year. Some are with our longtime sponsor, Air North, but cancan members have also participated in government promotions or at community events around the Yukon.”

The time commitment for the cancan line is extensive. Since late August, the veterans have participated in numerous events including the Save on Foods Grand Opening, an Easter Seals fundraiser in Vancouver, the Santa breakfast with Festival of Trees and the Winterval parade.

Auditions take place over three days in late August or early September. Two full days are put towards learning the beginning two minutes of the basic songs and the final day is individual interviews to get to know each other better.

McPhee-Knowles explains that the audition process is designed to help find individuals who have the commitment and demeanour to work with the group.

“The program is a minimum of four hours a week rehearsal time starting right after the auditions going until February,” McPheeKnowles said. “If you can’t commit three days for audition, we’ve found you usually can’t commit to the program like you need to.”

Oil lamps I

n modern times oil or kerosene burning lamps are used more as part of décor than to throw light on a situation. People nowadays run electric lights – either battery powered or using electricity – from the grid or a small generator.

Propane lights are also used, but to a lesser degree than 20 years ago.

Both propane lights and generators are noisy, while oil lamps are silent – allowing you to hear the hooting of an owl, the howling of the coyotes or the crackling of the fire in the wood-stove.

Oil lamps have been around, basically unchanged, for a couple hundred years in our society.

Meanwhile, the Inuit have used a similar lamp – without a chimney and using seal oil as fuel – called a “qulliq” for a few thousand years.

Lamps in our society have a fuel reservoir base made of glass, pottery or metal. A cloth wick adjustable for burning height hangs into the kerosene and is raised or lowered by turning a small toothed wheel, which is part of a brass coloured cap that screws onto the top of the reservoir base.

This brass cap also has four vertical, springy arms around its perimeter into which fits the bottom of the glass chimney or globe.

On a typical full-sized lamp the chimneys are usually eight to 11 inches tall and most commonly are clear glass – wider at the bottom than at the top.

Chimneys are also available in a few different shapes, some coloured while others are frosted glass to about two-thirds of the total height.

There are a few oil lamp and chimney suppliers online, but I am greatly concerned that my money will be wasted when these extremely fragile glass items arrive broken inside the packaging.

Some fairly plain, clear glass ones are available in Whitehorse and they are more readily available in the communities where the lamps may see more use.

The ability to adjust the wick up and down is important as a wick too high will smoke while burning and cover the inside of the chimney with soot in a very short time.

A wick too low (short) will not burn for long before the flame goes out.

By experimenting with the adjustment you will very soon find the point where the wick is long enough to give maximum light without smoking.

The wicks do need trimming once in awhile when the burning

end gets a bit of hard charring and will not light. Just crank the wick up (while the lamps is not lit) and trim straight across with scissors. Or, for a change, cut the wick slightly higher on the outside and lower in the middle and you will then have two smaller flames when lit.

Chimneys do get a little blackened on the inside, but are easy to clean in warm, soapy water.

Let them soak for a short time and then scrub with a bottle brush or a rag around a wooden spoon to get them clear again.

You have to be very close to an oil lamp if you intend to read as the light is very soft. A batterypowered headlamp solves that situation.

If some illumination and a lot of ambience is your goal, you’ll never beat a few oil lamps.

I

n the hyper-sensitive world of childhood, an ill-chosen word can sometimes have a devastating impact, even if no harm is intended.

I’m not talking about the kind of taunting, bullying talk that was unfortunately common on the playgrounds of my youth and is still far too prevalent today. I mean a casual, harmless remark – often by an adult – that can catch an unsuspecting child off guard.

For some reason, I recently found myself remembering an incident that took place in my Grade 5 classroom a few days after the Christmas of 1952.

In the run-up to the holiday, I had spent hours poring over the Eaton’s catalogue looking for one special gift I hoped my parents could afford. Time after time, my attention returned to a silvercoloured pocket watch, complete with matching chain.

I have no idea why a 9-yearold, who had never worn a waistcoat in his life, would hanker after a pocket watch, but this was a thing of beauty. It glowed from the page. The picture even showed a polished inner layer behind the

hinged back, to protect the workings from small, inquisitive finger.

Ours was not a wealthy family, so my four siblings and I were content with making modest requests for gifts. At $3.95, this magnificent timepiece seemed a treasure beyond price.

On Christmas Day, there it was, with my name on it. All through the holiday, I wound it and polished it repeatedly, checking its accuracy against the mantle clock, the kitchen clock, my older brother’s alarm clock, and every other time-telling device in the house.

With that gleaming beauty in my pocket, I felt like a proper swell!

Our school didn’t have a formal show-and-tell period in those days, but it was tradition in the lower grades for pupils to bring a favourite Christmas gift to show off to the class.

When my turn came, I proudly demonstrated my new watch, shiny inner lining and all.

“Ah,” the teacher announced to the class. “That’s what is called a nickel watch.”

tion when the whole room burst into laughter.

“But, but… ” I stammered as the teacher turned his attention to someone else.

At recess, I did my best to avoid the other kids, although the occasional chant of “nickle watch, nickle watch” managed to get through.

Somehow, I summoned up the courage at the end of the day to confront the teacher privately.

“It’s not a nickle watch, sir. It cost three dollars and ninety-five cents.”

It took a moment for him to respond.

“What I meant was, the metal it’s made of is called nickel. In Canada, we spell it n-i-c-k-e-l.

The five-cent coin is spelled ni-c-k-l-e. Here, look it up in the dictionary. It’s a beautiful watch, really.”

But it was too late. My favourite Christmas gift had already lost much of its lustre.

Still, I learned a spelling lesson that day I haven’t forgotten since.

Dawson City Music Festival aims for sustainability

T

he Dawson City Music Festival (DCMF) will be holding its annual general meeting on Thursday, January 18, at Yukon College. The meeting was to have been before Christmas, but analysis of the topics raised at a wellattended membership meeting in mid-October caused the board to decide to refine its thoughts a bit more before presenting a new working plan to the members.

The need for a revised plan as the festival moves into its 40th year is the result of declining ticket sales and increased costs.

Ironically, the first problem came about after the festival had already decided to reduce its size during its last strategic planning exercise.

The plan worked in terms of reducing some of the festival’s more annoying impacts on the community at large. The festival venues were always well managed; the problems appeared elsewhere.

As the festival grew bigger, it became clear that some of the people coming to Dawson that weekend were not interested in the music, but were coming to have a wild weekend. This led to a lot of congestion in the streets, and a fair amount of public misbehavior that was not appreciated by local residents, hoteliers, campground owners, and those who came to enjoy the festival itself.

When combined with increased competition from other events, the planned reduction turned out to cut deeper than anticipated.

“In the fall we held a ‘voice of the membership’ meeting,” said executive director Andrea Vincent.

“The goal of the meeting was to check in with our membership, let them know where we are, where we have been, and where we need to go. Presenting music in a remote community has its unique challenges, and as the festival climate shifts across the country, further challenges surface.

“In order to ensure DCMF continues for many years to come, we need to ebb and flow, and we need to think hard about sustainability.”

The executive presented the two dozen in attendance with the facts that revenues are down, funding sources are harder to come by, and the surplus which enabled DCMF to ignore these realities for some years was now used up.

“After thorough research,” Vincent said, “ it became evident that restructuring the festival would play a key role in a sustainability plan. Before making any decisions on how we might reshape the festival model, we wanted to hear from our supporters.

“What do they love? What could be better? What can we let go of?

Hand to God

Robert Askins’ darkly-comic riff on faith, grief and a possibly-possessed puppet opens Jan. 25 at the Guild Hall

L

ust, grief, denial and repression (not to mention demonic possession) in the bible-belt town of Cypress, Texas.

Oh, yes. Don’t forget the puppets.

These are all elements of the Guild Theatre’s upcoming production of Hand to God, a dark comedy by Robert Askins, who actually grew up in the Houston-area community in which he set his multiple Tony Award-nominated 2011 play.

The Guild’s artistic director, Brian Fidler, first heard of the show last year when the Arts Club Theatre mounted it in Vancouver.

Because of his “thing” for puppets (“particularly the dark puppets”), he decided to order a copy.

“I read it, and I was absolutely laughing out loud all the way through. It’s super-edgy, and it just rides that line between inappropriate and … well, offensive,” Fidler said.

The play’s lead characters are Margery, a recently-widowed woman in her 40s, and her shy teenaged son, Jason.

“They’re both grieving the loss of their husband and father.

So they’re both on the journey, and they both sort of reach their breaking point in the course of the play.”

When Jason discovers an affinity for puppets, the local pastor encourages Margery to start an after-school puppet group for the church’s teenagers, with the intention that they will perform for members of the congregation.

It doesn’t take long for things to start going sideways, both for Margery (played by newcomer Odile Nelson) and her son (Loughran Thorson-Looysen).

Initially, Jason is using his puppet, Tyrone, as a “pathway way to channel his unfulfilled emotions,” including those surrounding his relationship with his mother, and his grief over his father’s sudden death.

Meanwhile, as Margery seeks her own form of solace, she “totally loses it and does some inappropriate things” with one of the other characters. Along the way, she also has to cope with confusing romantic overtures from Pastor Greg (James Cleary).

Apart from Jason, the puppet group includes Jessica (played by Brooke Fusick), the down to earth girl-next-door type, who is “superfeisty and fiery, and doesn’t put up with anything.

“There are characters in the play who are attempting to manipulate her, and she doesn’t stand for any of it. She definitely knows who she is, whereas Jason is struggling to find himself,” Fidler said.

The third member of the group is the local bad boy, Timothy (Adrian Woodhouse), a troubled teen with an agenda of his own, whom Fidler describes as hard to like.

“The characters are very much rooted in reality, and some of them are quite foul-mouthed, particularly Timothy. But he’s a real person. That’s what I really like about the writing. No one is spared, but they’re real people.”

The play’s other main character is Jason’s hand-puppet, Tyrone, who actually opens the play with a hilarious, but expletivelaced, prologue before proceeding to dominate the action in many respects.

It is through Tyrone’s agency that Jason summons the courage to broach his feelings for Jessica, if only indirectly, and under the influence of the trouble-making Timothy.

“There’s a risqué scene between his puppet and Jessica’s that I think is going to be worth the price of admission. I don’t want to give too much away, but I just hope we don’t get shut down,” Fidler laughed.

While the play addresses issues of faith, human desire, and sexual appropriateness in a way some people might find objectionable, Fidler believes the playwright is making an earnest attempt to explore these questions from many different angles.

“I think that is one part of the conversation with evangelical Christians, with situations such as [Alabama Senate candidate] Roy Moore, that is pertinent right now.”

While Hand to God is set in a specific locale, Fidler believes the action could easily take place elsewhere.

“It’s many places in America, and it’s many places in Canada that are still very much rooted in conservative Christian values,” he said.

Levels of repression and denial run through the journeys of all the characters except Timothy, but the heart of the play is grief and faith, “and sometimes we need a Christ-like figure so that we don’t kill each other,” Fidler said.

Still, as Tyrone suggests in his prologue, perhaps we’re all animals, “who just want to be eating and [fornicating],” the director added.

For the three teenaged roles, Fidler followed Askins’ stage directions by casting actors older than the 15 to 17-year-olds they play.

“It’s kind of a comfort thing.

It goes too inappropriate if you

have teenagers there. It’s not just language, but content-wise it’s pretty edgy.”

Thorsen-Looysen, Fusick and Woodhouse are all in their early 20s, and alumni of the Music, Art & Drama (MAD) program at Wood Street School. They also worked together backstage during last month’s Guild production of Good People.

Hand to God runs Thursday to Saturday, from January 25 to February 10 at the Guild Theatre on 14th Avenue in Porter Creek. Curtain time is 8 p.m

s a youngster back in the 1950s, one of our responsibilities was to go out in the open fields and pick fresh mushrooms – and to know the good from the bad.

There are hundreds of different kinds of mushrooms and some types contain the lethal toxins amanitin and phalloidin. These two toxins can be deadly and can actually destroy the liver and kidneys leading to death.

I strongly suggest that if you’re going to pick your own – or even buy wild harvested mushrooms from farmers markets – pick up a book on edible and poisonous mushrooms. It could save your life or of some other family member.

Mushrooms can be prepared in a variety of ways to add to your meals CREAM CHEESE MUSHROOM TURNOVERS Pastry: 8 oz cream cheese ½ Tbsp butter 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour Have the cream cheese and butter at room temperature. Put into bowl and beat together well.

Mix in flour. Shape into ball. Chill for at least one hour.

Filling: 3 Tbsp butter 1 large white onion, finely chopped ½ pound fresh mushrooms, chopped 1 tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour ¼ thyme ¼ cup sour cream 1 egg, beaten Method: Combine butter, onions and mushrooms in frying pan. Sauté about 10 minutes, until tender.

Add salt, pepper flour and thyme.

Stir together. Add sour cream.

Stir until thickened. Remove from heat and cool thoroughly.

Roll pastry fairly thin. Cut into 3-inch rounds. Place one tsp of filling in the centre of each circle.

Dampen outer half edge with beaten egg. Fold over and press edges together with fork or fingers to seal. Arrange on greased baking sheet. Cut tiny slits on top of each. Brush tops with beaten egg.

Bake at 450ºF for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Makes about 3 dozen.

STEAK AND MUSHROOM CASSEROLE 1 pound ground steak 1 egg, beaten ½ cup milk Bread crumbs or crushed corn flakes 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 white onion Method: Mix steak, beaten egg and milk together. Shape into small balls.

Dip in cracker crumbs (or corn flakes) and sear in frying pan. Sear onion rings. Place in casserole dish. Cover with mushroom soup.

Bake in oven preheated to 350ºF for 30 minutes.

SCALLOPED MUSHROOMS 1 cup macaroni, cooked and rinsed. Add 1 can cream mushroom soup; place in greased casserole. Sauté bread crumbs with butter, then spread the bread crumbs on top of the mix in the casserole dish.

Bake in oven at 375ºF for about half an hour until heated through and browned slightly. Good with catsup.

MUSHROOM TARTS 1 loaf white bread 1 cup melted butter 1 Tbsp green onion, finely chopped ½ pound fresh mushrooms 1 Tbsp parsley, chopped 2 Tbsp lemon juice Pinch of cayenne pepper Pinch salt 2 Tbsp flour 1 Tbsp butter 1 cup cream Parmesan cheese Method: Cut bread with cookie cutter to fit muffin tins and fit in to form a cup. Pour melted butter over bread and bake at 350ºF until bottoms are golden brown.

In a heavy frying pan, over low heat, cook green onion and mushrooms in butter. Add parsley, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, salt and flour. Add cream and mix. Fill shells and sprinkle with cheese.

Bake until hot. This should give you approximately 20 large tarts in regular size muffin tin.

HOT MUSHROOM SPREAD 6 to 8 slices side bacon, cut into ½ inch pieces 3 Tbsp butter 1 small white onion 1 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced 1 Tbsp flour 1 cup sour cream 1 tsp lemon juice 2 cups grated cheese Method: Cook bacon (but not crisp) in frying pan. Pat dry and spread in pie pan. Pour off bacon drippings from frying pan. Add butter and

sauté onions. Add mushrooms and sauté. Add flour and cook on low heat. Add sour cream and lemon juice. Spread over bacon. Spread cheese over top. Bake at 350ºF for 30 minutes or till bubbly.

Serve with small rye bread or crackers and enjoy.

STUFFED MUSHROOMS 1 tsp Parmesan cheese Salt and pepper to taste Very small white onion, finely chopped 1 Tbsp butter 1 Tbsp chopped mushrooms with stems 1 Tbsp chopped ham ¼ cup of Oxo or Boveril mixed with hot water Brown bread crumbs ½ Tbsp bread crumbs 10 large mushrooms, stems removed Method: Mix together all ingredients except the mushrooms caps and brown bread crumbs.

Fry the brown bread crumbs in pan until browned. Set mushroom caps on a circle of fried bread crumbs just larger than mushrooms. Fill the caps with mix, slightly moistened with Oxo or Boveril. Sprinkle with bread crumbs.

Wild Game Recipes with Sydney Oland

almon is a great fish to quickly cure, and the addition of a bit of tea and some gin really compliment the delicate flavours of the beautiful West Coast salmon we’re lucky enough to have access to.

The addition of tea and gin makes this a great dish to have for brunch (because gin Caesars are the only civilized way to move through a Sunday morning) and while it feels a bit fancy, it’s actually really simple to prepare.

You can simply serve it on toast with a bit of cream cheese and lemon, or put it on a green salad. Either way you’ve done most of your work ahead of time, so all you have to worry about is washing up the dishes and keeping those Caesars properly chilled.

Tea and gin cured salmon INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 cup sugar ½ cup salt 2 half-pound salmon fillets (skin on) 1 tsp loose tea (oolong or jasmine work really well) 1 Tbsp gin

Mix together salt and sugar and put one quarter of that mixture on a plate. Place one salmon fillet skin-side down on the salt mixture, then sprinkle with half the tea, and drizzle with half the gin.

The idea for the Aurora ride was hatched by James Connor, director at the Klondike Snowmobile Association, who also works at Air North. Air North’s recent Aurora flight inspired him to set up the event. Connor will be observing the weather on Friday morning to determine which evening will best work to see the incredible Aurora-lit sky.

“I was working on the Aurora flight and I thought that would be pretty cool to do while sledding (snowmobiling),” said Connor.

And, he said, every year members have been requesting more group events. This will be the first major event for the winter season.

It doesn’t matter what level of snowmobiling skill you have, everyone is welcome to join. The route is easy going, but if you’re like Connor you can try to keep up with him at the front of the group.

There will be a number of experienced snowmobilers from the board who will ensure everyone’s safety. They will provide an overview before the ride to ensure everyone is comfortable and ready to go.

All you need is access to a sled

(snowmobile) and there are options to rent sleds and trailers with discounted prices for members.

The route will start at Fish Lake Road/Copper Haul Trail staging area and will run from 6 p.m. until about 10 p.m., weather dependent.

“The further you get away from town and the lights, the more intense the sky looks,” said Connor. He has been riding sleds since he could remember, and got his first sled at 13 years old. His dad is also a board member.

The inaugural Aurora Snowmobile Ride should make for an incredible experience to enjoy the trails and either try something new, make new friends, or have some new riding buddies for the future.

Other events the Klondike Snowmobile Association has planned include Take a Friend Snowmobiling Ride on Saturday, February 10, and the Dawson Overland Trail Ride on Saturday, March 3. For more information about events, rentals, or anything snowmobiling check out KSA.yk.ca.

I

’m living a dream and I look forward to the next step…

At the end of 2016, I made many diverse acquaintances, each promising me future days, every one more enjoyable than the last.

Yet, as the winter set in, I had the feeling the Yukon was going into “hibernation”. I didn’t know if it was due to the snow that sprinkled the landscape, the extreme temperatures (around -38ºC), or the omnipresent blackness which disrupted my biological clock, but it seemed to me that the Yukoners were hiding themselves behind the heat of their fireplaces.

For a few weeks now, I have had the feeling that everything is slowing down here. It’s not just a question of “Yukon Time,” it’s the winter anchoring more deeply and the city falling asleep little by little.

If I listened to the locals, I likely wouldn’t do anything for the next three months... But I just want to enjoy! Live the moment, enjoy every second and most importantly, not procrastinate.

Then, even with frozen lashes and three pairs of socks, I go out, I explore!

THE SNOW

As of October, the flakes made their appearance. Timid at first – unlike the 40 cm snowfalls of the Alps in Europe – they finally managed to impose themselves little by little and to freeze time.

Hungry?

I no longer had to wait to feel the winter influence. It was here – and it wasn’t even the month of December, yet. I watched every change of perspective, because with its thick, white mantle, the snow changed everything: mountains seemed more accessible; the least relief was softened; lakes were transformed into ice; and the trees were dressed in their most beautiful jewels.

It was a brand-new Yukon landscape that was shaping right before my eyes. And I certainly would not sit on my couch in front of the stove, watching it from the window!

Live the moment and enjoy every second...

THE COLD Yet, seven years ago, I was living my first winter in Quebec, where a temperature of -29ºC combined with the humid air and a chilling wind left me feeling that if I didn’t go back to a warm environment quickly, every part of my body would slowly change into ice cubes.

And this, despite the winter gear bought on the spot! After this episode, I was apprehensive about winter in the Yukon. Known to be one of the most extreme in Canada, it’s actually not that hard to live with, since here the cold is dry. Dry but icy.

I was experiencing that cold, for the first time, at the beginning of December, during a week, with temperatures near -36. But I wasn’t to be put off by the situation. Quite the contrary! I swaggered about, wrapped up warm, snowshoes on my feet, on the Dempster Highway! My second time? I saw it mid January... the

thermometer oscillated, for several days in a row, between -32 and -26. And still sitting pretty :) Live the moment and enjoy every second...

THE DARKNESS I always seem to end up sitting pretty... however, on shorter durations. And it has nothing to do with the surrounding cold, for which I was prepared! But rather everything to do with a very small detail that I hadn’t anticipated ... And yet, just a few hundred kilometres from the Arctic Circle, I should have thought about it!

What’s more, with the presence of the Midnight Sun in summer ... Now, nights were longer than days! The result is a truly special atmosphere.

In the muffled surroundings offered by the snow, there is a heavy silence. Fighting firmly against my inner marmot – who, rejoicing in all this darkness, mistakenly thinks that it is time to go into hibernation – I seize my cloak and venture out onto the heights of Riverdale, my new neighborhood.

Live the moment and enjoy every second...

THE WONDER I explore each street, each trail, and discover the surrounding areas: Long Lake, Hidden Lakes, Chadburn Lake, Miles Canyon and Grey Mountain. Eyes wide open, a smile frozen on my lips, because I am living the moment and enjoying every second.

ince Nakai Theatre launched the Pivot Festival in 2008, there have been some big names and unforgettable performances that have graced stages and pop-up theatre settings in Whitehorse.

The festival has boasted bringing unconventional and awardwinning shows from across Canada and the world to Yukon audiences.

Award-winning and inspirational

pieces – such as Cliff Cardinal’s Huff, the Parisian hit L’Immediat, and the hilarious A Brimful of Asha – have all been part of the festival alongside homegrown playwrights in the process of building new pieces.

Held at the end of January each year – and packed with onstage and off-stage events – Pivot brings people together to experience art and community in the

dark. Its 10th year is no different. With 10 days jam-packed with three shows, speed-friending pop-ups, a pub crawl and more, audiences will have no trouble breaking free of the winter blues.

Onegin

By Arts Club Theatre Company Feb 1-3, 8 p.m., at the Yukon Arts Centre Presented in partnership with the Yukon Arts Centre Indie-rock musical Onegin is an award-winning show put on by an award-winning cast. Taking place in the Russian winter, it tells a story of love, boredom and what we will do to escape them both.

Co-writer and musical director Veda Hille is no stranger to the Yukon having spent time here in the late ’90s.

“I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in the Yukon from

about 1995 to 2005,” Hille said.

“It was a very formative time in my life as an artist. I miss you guys! I’m happy that Onegin is going up, of course. It’s a big work, and I think the North will love it.

And hopefully I can come up again sometime soon.”

With her experience of the North, Hille is certain that Yukon audiences will connect with and enjoy Onegin.

“Yukoners are hardy people with big feelings, in my experience,” Hille said. “Onegin is a wild, romantic ride, and it’s also irreverent and funny. Tailor-made for Northern sensibilities.”

Trader Time

Written by Ivan Coyote and scored by songwriter Sarah MacDougall Jan 26 and 27, 7 p.m., Old Fire Hall Inspired by the CKRW The Rush call-in show, Trader Time, the two artists blend story and song to create a new piece that will be unveiled at Pivot. The series of interconnected stories paint a haunting and sometimes hilarious story of Whitehorse through the perspective of a trans person returning to their birthplace and its history after many years.

The piece is adapted from The Threepenny Opera (circa 1928) and boasts beautiful songs about terrible people.

“This is my first full show as a creator and director up here,” Zimmer said, “and I’m excited to share the mix of humour, music, and biting satire that I love – and that the 3penny Radio Revue embodies.”

The Extras Keeping up the Pivot tradition of being more than a theatre festival, there will be off-stage events throughout the 10 days that aim to bring people together in unique ways. Audiences will be able to enjoy everything from a pub crawl that blends live storytelling and songs with a group wander to downtown bars, to speed-friending events where they will bond over uncommon questions and a ticking clock.

Richard’s Tire Tips

Do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?

If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel.

There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

Big, driving quarter notes

Vancouver’s Jen Hodge All Stars will make their Yukon debut in Dawson City and Whitehorse this weekend

en Hodge had just spent five hectic days in Asheville, North Carolina, rehearsing every day and performing late into every night as part of the massive celebration of swing music known as Lindy Focus XVI. Despite the grinding schedule, the Vancouver jazz bassist and singer considered the Christmasweek event “a really incredible experience” that allowed her to meet and play with outstanding musicians from across North America and abroad.

Around 3:30 a.m. the day after New Year’s, Hodge flew into New Orleans, Louisiana, for a few days of downtime and a chance to savour some of her favourite music.

“New Orleans jazz is very close to my heart,” she admitted in an interview from her hotel in the city known as the cradle of jazz.

But jazz wasn’t even on Hodge’s radar when she first realized she wanted to pursue a career in music.

“I don’t think I ever really made that decision. It just happened. From when I was 11, I felt, ‘I’m going to be a musician. This is

what I’m supposed to do with my existence.’”

Watching a Beatles movie at a friend’s house quickly focused her musical attention on rock as her genre of choice.

“I just loved that music so much. I had always wanted to be in the school band, so I wanted to pick instruments that were versatile enough that I could play in the concert band and play in a rock band.”

When it came time to declare her top three instrumental preferences, she made a pragmatic choice.

“You couldn’t play guitar in the concert band, but you could play electric bass. They used to give electric bass players the tuba parts, or string bass parts. So electric bass was my first choice, then percussion, and then saxophone.”

Because few other students wanted to play bass, Hodge basically ended up in all the ensembles in her Courtenay, B.C. school, thanks to the gift of an old instrument from a cousin.

“It was serendipitous. I kind of feel like the bass chose me more

than I chose it. And I wasn’t about to resist.”

In Grade 11, after five years playing mainly classic rock, she auditioned for the senior jazz band. But her teacher had news: if she wanted to represent her school in the top band, she would have to take up the “real” bass.

After looking at the school’s only upright bass, she scrunched up her nose and said, “Oh, that’s not very rock and roll.”

The teacher didn’t budge.

“He said, ‘Well, if you want the spot in the band, you have to play it. And we have our first real performance in two weeks, so the choice is yours.’”

Hodge reluctantly agreed to give it a try.

“I took it home and I was pretty begrudging about it at the beginning. Then I played it all weekend, and by the end of it I was like, ‘Oh, this is really fun,’” Before long, she had connected with some Grade 12 students who were really into jazz and invited her to play with them.

“We would hang out on the weekends and listen to recordings they had of Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock and stuff,” she said.

“It was different and interesting, and they wanted to play some of those tunes. So I was listening to them, to learn them and work on them.”

About the same time, Hodge first attended the Courtenay Youth Music Camp, which was originally established in her Vancouver Island hometown by the Vancouver Junior Symphony Society in 1967, before branching out beyond orchestral music.

“I played a different kind of jazz at that camp; (renowned Vancouver bassist) Jodi Proznick was the bass instructor, and she was really inspiring.”

Since graduating from the jazz program at Capilano University in 2007, Hodge has carved out a solid reputation as a performer, arranger and bandleader, first with the Company B Jazz Band, which started in 2007.

With both that group and the Jen Hodge All Stars, which she founded in 2010, the emphasis is on a hard-driving traditional style.

“I’ve always been more drawn to jazz that has a deep groove and a solid beat than a more subtle one. I just love a big, fat, driving quarter-note. It just feels so good, and it makes other people feel good, and that makes me feel even better.”

The Jen Hodge All Stars will play two Yukon shows this week: Friday, January 19 at the Odd Hall in Dawson City (8 p.m.), and Sunday, January 21 at the Yukon Arts Centre for Jazz on the Wing (7:30 p.m.).

Other personnel for the northern visit are Chris Davis on trumpet, Jonathan Doyle on clarinet and saxophone, Josh Roberts on guitar, and Julian MacDonough on drums.

Much of the repertoire will be drawn from her second CD, which is set for official release in February. While it’s rooted in a particular tradition, it is music that “could only have happened now,” Hodge said.

“I think any of these tracks sound like 2017 to me. But they’ll sound like 2018 when we’re playing it live in the Yukon.”

Warrior fit

A circuit fitness routine you can do at a park or at home

ellow gym heroes, this an article for you - or for anyone who wants to take their fitness to the extreme level.

I am going to go over a circuit obstacle course that’s easy to create, but will challenge you.

Circuit-style boot camp obstacle courses are awesome for building endurance and stamina, because they push you past your limits. By using a combination of body weight exercises, high intensity interval training and weights, you will be giving yourself a full body workout.

They also serve as a nice change, if you are looking for a break from cardio machines or weights.

I, myself can attest to circuit workouts. Having done my first one eight months ago in a class, I became addicted. In fact, I like them so much I now do them four times per week and I have noticed a huge improvement in agility and strength.

This workout is one I’ve put together on my own and worked for me. Let’s begin!

You will need the following; a duffel bag filled with four 5-pound weights or you can ditch the bag and use a log that’s about 3 to 4 feet long and weighs about 20 pounds. Distance markers will be useful: you can use tennis balls, flags, pylons, etc.

Next you will need two hand weights: 10 pounds each if you are a beginner, 15 if you are intermediate, 25 to 30 is you are seriously in beast mode.

Also, have lots of water nearby.

There will be six stations: a different exercise to be done at each station and a different cardio exercise to be performed while travelling to each one.

As far as time goes, it’s really up to you. If you are looking to seriously push yourself, then one round of the circuit should take you 15 min. If you are looking for a good sweat that won’t have your heart pounding too hard, aim for 25 minutes. If you are looking to get back into the swing of things and try something new then 30 to 40 minutes can be your goal.

Let’s get started.

Take your markers and set them 150 feet apart. Station 1 will have your hand weights. Station 3 will have the weighted bag.

I would recommend doing this circuit at a park or in an open field. If you are unable to get outdoors then you can do it indoors in your basement or rec room and instead of running between stations 150 feet apart, you can jog on the spot, high knees are optional, but give you extra cardio. Aim for 45 seconds as fast as you can.

Station 1 With your hand weights you are going to do standard bicep curls: 10 per side. Then jog to station 2.

Station 2 Here you will do a mix of plié jump squats and prisoner squats.

For the prisoner squat, place your feet shoulder width apart and your hands behind your head, then squat. Do 10 of each, alternating between each squat.

Travel to station 3 by sprinting as fast as you can to station 4, first, stop, count to 10, then sprint back to station 3. Stop and take a 30 second rest.

Try not to rest longer, unless you absolutely have to. When your heart rate becomes too low you are no longer in that fat burning zone.

Station 3 Pick up your weighted duffel bag, balance it on the back of your shoulders and jog to station 4.

Station 4 Place the bag down. Here you will do jack knives. Lie on your

back, feet stretched out, arms stretched back behind your head.

Raise your arms and feet at the same time. When you raise your feet, bend your knees as you pull them closer towards your chest.

Your hands and knees should touch at the same time. Then your arms go back over your head and feet down to the ground. Do 15 repetitions.

When you’re done, pick up your weight bag, place over your shoulder and jog back to station 3.

Then spider crawl to station 4 and then continue to station 5. What is a spider crawl? Position yourself with your palms on the ground, toes touching the ground. Take your left leg, and move it towards your left hand. Move your right hand about 2 feet in front of you and take your right leg and move it towards your right arm. Continue this until you reach station 5.

Station 5 Here you will be doing tricep push-ups. A tricep push-up is similar in motion to a regular pushup. What you will change is the position of your arms. Instead of having your arms positioned out to align with your shoulders, you will bring them in close to your body, with your hands positioned under your shoulders.

By having your arms close to your body, your triceps are doing most of the work to raise your body. This type of push-up can be quite challenging, so if you need to modify it, you can do it from your knees. Try doing 10.

By this time you should be sweating up a storm and you may feel like taking an extended

break, depending on your fitness level. Aim to limit breaks, because keeping your heart rate going burns that fat. You are almost done, then you can rest for a little bit, before you do it all over again.

Travel to station 6 by doing high knee skips.

Station 6 We are back to tackling the core with plank. Lying flat, prop your body up using your forearms, and hold the plank position for as long as you can. Ideal would be to hold for 2 minutes. If you begin to feel strained in your shoulders or back, reset your position, your core should be doing most of the work.

Congratulations, you have completed round 1 of your beast mode circuit. Take a five minute break, then repeat, adding five reps to each exercise at each station. For planks, try to extend the hold time by 30 seconds.

You should aim to complete three to five rounds,depending on your fitness level.

If you are new to boot camp workouts and were not able to get to three rounds, don’t stress. The important thing is that you are working towards challenging your fitness level.
