’m from Ontario, but boy let me tell you I would much rather be out here. Where I come from the only outdoor activities families engage in are taking the bus, and burying their heads in technology. You know that the next generation is going to be smarter than you when you’re watching a baby in her stroller scrolling through facebook profiles on the mother’s tablet.

Not here though! Just the other day I was walking down the street when I heard people yelling, and rounding the corner I came across two groups of youths walking in opposite directions. Kudos to their parents for teaching them to walk away from a fight, but I still had to laugh at how they called each other on from a block away. Back where I’m from the entire argument would have taken place over twitter, and they would have continued standing in front of one another with their heads down until the disagreement came to blows.

Drawing closer to the second group I couldn’t help but observe that it was a couple, and one of them was armed with something quite terrifying: a basket ball. I nearly burst into relieved laughter watching him bounce it off his car. Upon spotting my inquisitive

gaze the youths piled into the vehicle, and with a playful wave the shotgun passenger bid me farewell as the tires kicked up a dust storm.

What a change from Ontario!

Back there if I saw a group of kids hanging out near a car my first thought would be, “which of these kids is going to draw a gun?”

With their pants belted halfway to their knees exposing plaid boxers, and gang bling up the ying yang such punks would beat their chests at any who dared to approach.

Their greeting of “Yo whachu lookin’ at? Wanna get iced?” didn’t produce any warm feelings.

Down in the cities, when youth got to playing outside an observer rarely had cause to praise their parents for raising them well. But what do you expect when ma and pa are each working two jobs for minimum wage, before falling onto the couch at night ready to just forget the daily grind?

These days freezers are fully stocked with microwave dinners, so that the kids can just grab a meal whenever they get hungry.

Little Jimmy hollers down to his mom, “I’m having cookies for supper!” Tired and stressed beyond imagination, his mother doesn’t

even look up from Candy Crush when she answers, “No go make yourself some Pizza Pops!” Unfortunately for her, little Jimmy is smart as your average kid, and grabbing his cookies he just sets a timer on the microwave so when it beeps she’ll think he’s obeying.

What a joy it is to see children helping their parents choose fresh fruits at the grocery store! I can’t emphasize how it warms my heart to see families working together, and taking pleasure in the little things that make life worthwhile.

I’m glad that people here in the Yukon remember to put down their cell phones, and take advantage of the world that is just right outside their front doors. If anything could restore my hope for the next generation it is the people living up here. So as the season turns remember to get out there, and like the youth who was dinging up their car without a care, go have a ball!

This is the second of a five part series by Dan Davidson about the professional authors participating in the Yukon Writers’ Festival and and the Young Authors Conference during the first week of May.

W

hitehorse based writer and filmmaker Kelly Milner grew up in the Yukon. She cut her writing teeth doing feature articles for a local newspaper.

“I loved that job and it helped me pursue a degree in journalism where I specialized in documentary film,” Milner says.

After gaining that degree, she took a career detour and got a Masters in Resource Management.

“I didn’t follow a normal career path, as I ended up working in land claims implementation for almost two decades and only came back to storytelling a few years ago. I think it was only recently when I started telling stories and exploring new media that I really felt I had something to offer as a creative person.”

In 2015, she decided to get back to her storytelling roots and founded her own media production company. Her first film is called SHIFT, and it blends her experience working with indigenous communities with her unique Northern storytelling perspective.

She’s also been writing magazine articles and helping other people with their projects.

“I wanted to be a storyteller

because I like to make people think. So much of what I read, or the media I consume, is material that expands or challenges my own understanding of issues or ideas. That is where I get my inspiration.

“I very much believe that finding ways to help people become informed in new and interesting ways will help ensure that we have an engaged society and that can have meaningful dialogue on important issues.”

She finds that the work she has done outside of writing and documentary work has been an asset in preparing her for the work she does now. She recommends that young writers gain that kind of background.

“My advice is to go out and explore the world first,” Milner says.

“In order to write about life, you need to experience it. And have different arrows in your quiver, so to speak. This is a hard business and you need to be able to draw on different skills at different times to make a living.”

The creative task for a documentary maker is somewhat different than it is for those who write or create fiction.

“My biggest challenge is acknowledging there are people behind every story I tell and that they are their stories, not mine,” Milner says. “I think that is an incredible responsibility as a writer and being true to your subject while respecting the individual and their realities can sometimes be a difficult balance.”

Milner likes to have deadlines to push her creative process along.

“I write best under pressure,” she says. “I’m a dedicated procrastinator. I will often spend weeks formulating the story I want to tell in my mind and then will write it all in one go. I then like to take a few days away from it and then come back to do a more focused re-write and fact check. When it comes to my film projects, it is a very different story and I find there is a lot more back and forth with collaborators to make sure I am getting the story right.”

Milner will also participate at the Live Words public reading in Whitehorse on May 3, and at a public event in Haines Junction on the evening of May 6.

hey’re a much more delicate bird, compared to the swans,” says Carrie McClelland, a wildlife viewing biologist with Environment Yukon. “They stand three and a half to four feet tall, with a six foot wingspan, but they only weigh around seven or eight pounds. They’re very slender.”

Lesser sandhill cranes migrate each year from their winter feeding grounds in Texas and New Mexico, travelling thousands of kilometres to their summer nesting grounds in Siberia and Alaska.

They can be seen on this migration route each year in the Yukon (although they do not nest in the Yukon) as they fly through Tintina Trench in Faro. Between 150,000 and 200,000 birds pass through the area each year, and flocks are large, numbering up to 800 individuals at at a time, McClelland notes.

Lesser sandhill cranes are among the most successful and numerous crane species in North America, largely due to their adaptability, McClelland says. The longlegged, graceful birds are omnivores, eating not only small fish and frogs like many other crane species, but mice, voles, seeds and fruit. They will also hunt in grasslands, not just wetlands, and have been compared to horses in terms of their behaviour; a comparison which goes so far, McClelland says, that male sandhill cranes are called stallions, females mares and babies colts.

The cranes are physically quite striking, with soft grey plumage and a distinctive red cap. This cap is absent in juveniles. The

birds lay three to four eggs at a time, but will usually only be successful in rearing one or two colts to adulthood. They are unrelated to herons, despite popular belief.

When migrating such long distances, the cranes are “soaring” birds, unlike geese who are “flapping” birds. The cranes use thermals to drift along.

Grouping together, they ride up and down on the warm air currents, which can make them look like they are all rising up and then tumbling down on each other, says McClelland.

Aside from being beautiful to observe, the birds are also culturally significant, McClelland says; they are a symbol of fidelity and marriage in many culture.

“Like many large birds, the sandhill cranes mate for life and are dedicated, careful parents,” McClelland says. “They’re

also known for their elaborate, beautiful courtship rituals, which look like dances.”

The sandhill cranes can be viewed in May in Faro, where they are a tourist attraction at the annual Sheep and Crane Festival, which runs May 5th through the 7th. For more information on the Sheep and Crane festival visit www.

ecently, I was meandering through my trusty Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (shorter, as in not quite as gargantuan as the Encyclopaedia Britannica).

This is a habit I acquired in my youth, but indulge less frequently these days, usually when I’m trying to curb my morbid addiction to Facebook.

I hadn’t probed far into this two-volume door stopper before my eyes (or my finger) stumbled across a word I’ve known all my life, but seldom use: bric-a-brac.

It’s a lovely word that creates a succulent explosion of the lips and a satisfying click of the tongue against one’s upper dentures. Try it. I think you’ll like it.

Rather than just glide by, confident that I already knew what it meant, I actually took time to read the definition. Turns out, it means more than just those fiddly little items that sit on the mantelpiece, screaming to be dusted at 20-minutes intervals.

Bric-a-brac, I was learned, learn, does not necessarily refer to an insubstantial piece of kitsch, a tsastke (or tchotchke, depending where you learned your Yiddish spelling). Neither is it always a trinket, a trifle, or a mere bagatelle.

In fact, bric-a-brac boasts a status similar to that of its first cousin, the honoured knick-knack.

Admittedly, as someone who

My friends at Oxford inform me that a knick-knack may be a “small, dainty article of furniture, dress, etc.,” or a “frivolous object more for ornament than use.”

On page 288, they advise that bric-a-brac refers to “miscellaneous old ornaments, trinkets, small pieces of furniture, etc.; antiquarian knick-knacks”. They

go on to state confidently that its origins lie in the French phrase à bric-à-brac, meaning “at random”.

My other Oxford, a slim and concise 1,552 pages, defines brica-brac as “curiosities, old furniture, china, fans, etc.” Curiously, it suggests the word comes – perhaps – from a different French phrase, which we translate as “by hook or by crook”.

Personally, I lean toward the Concise OED definition, for one main reason: it includes fans among the examples of possible bric-a-brac. For a flighty mind such as mine, the word “fan” immediately summons up another glorious word: scrimshaw.

Go ahead, say that one a few times. Slowly. Very slowly. Let it linger on the tongue, like a fine sip of Madeira. Scrimmmm … shaw.

For me, it conjures images of ornate, lace-like carvings in ivory, or more environmentallyexcusable materials such as shell, or antler. On a dainty fan, or a screen to shield an opium parlour from public view.

I really should look that one up and absorb its meaning properly, if time permits. But alas, with the Shorter OED, it can be a long, long journey from B to S. Ken Bolton is a freelance writer who lives southeast of Whitehorse.

Do You Remember When?

Yep. I do remember!

llow me to take you back in time to when the words of today had a great difference in meaning…

Close your eyes… and go back in time… before the internet, Mac, Dreamcast, Playstation or Nintendo 64… away back, I’m talking hide and seek at dusk… hopscotch, Double Dutch, jacks, kickball, mother may I, Red Rover and Hula-Hoops. Running through the sprinkler, the smell of the sun and licking salty lips.

Wait… watching Saturday cartoons (remember short commercials?) Fat Albert, Road Runner, Popeye and Olive Oyl, The Three Stooges, Bugs Bunny. Then there was staying up for Gun Smoke, and Bonanza. A way back, when around the corner seemed so far away, going downtown seemed like going somewhere, and truth or dare involved nothing but a little embarrassment.

Then there was Cops and Robbers, climbing trees, walking to school no matter what the weather was, running until you were out of breath, laughing so hard your stomach ached, jumping on the bed and pillow fights.

How about spinning around until you got dizzy and falling down was a common cause of giggles, being tired from playing so hard.

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for the team,

war was a card game and water balloons were the ultimate choice of weapon.

Then there were baseball cards that slipped into the spokes with clothespins that transformed any average bike into a high-end motorcycle (at least in our minds).

Remember when nobody owned a purebred dog, when a quarter was a decent allowance and another quarter felt like a miracle, when you reached into a muddy gutter for a penny?

When you automatically got

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in Monopoly your windshield clean and an oil check with every fill up? Then there was the time when laundry detergent came with free glasses and nearly everyone’s mom was home when the kids got there.

It was magic when Dad would

“remove his thumb,” it was a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents and no “Golden Arches.”

When any parent could discipline any kid, have them carry groceries, and nobody, not even the kids, thought a thing of it?

When sent to the principal’s office was nothing, compared to the fate that awaited you when you got home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn’t because of drive-by shootings,

drugs or gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat and boy do I remember that!

Remember when.

The tough decisions were made by going, “ eeny-meeney-mineymo,” mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, “Do over !” and a “Race issue” meant arguing who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in Monopoly. The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was a cold.

Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a sling shot.

No one was prettier than mom, scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better, taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin, ice cream was considered a basic food group, getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.

And when abilities were discovered because of a “double-dare,” and older siblings were the worst tormentors – but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most of these, then you have LIVED!!!!

Yep…I do remember!

What Does It Mean To You

To Be A Canadian

f we sit back and give some thought to this great country of Canada, we are abound with a history, as well as a freedom, second to none in this world. Our country is in cased with people from all over the world, of different colours, language and religions. They came from Asia, Africa, from England, Scotland and other parts of the world, to forge out a future, and a freedom that is almost unthinkable in a country of their origin.

My family history goes back to my father’s Scotland, my mother’s England and both their ancestral history to Ireland and then back to the Vikings. But with all this, I stand proud to be able to proclaim that “I AM A CANADIAN.” I have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and a freedom to travel across this great nation, from shore to shore to shore, without any restriction whatsoever. If I don’t like the way my government is running this great country, I can speak out freely against them, without the fear of any oppression.

Now, WHATS UP YUKON magazine, is giving all residents of the Yukon an opportunity to express their heart thought feeling with a poem contest, asking the question “What Does It Mean To Be A Canadian”.

Brettanie Deal-Porter

B

rettanie Deal-Porter is the program coordinator for Special Olympics Yukon, the Yukon’s branch of an international organization devoted to making sports accessible to individuals with intellectual disabilities. It’s a job that Deal-Porter has great passion for.

Said passion was sparked at the age of 16. She was working at a local pool and was assigned the task of giving one-on-one swimming lessons to a student with a cognitive disability. She loved the work. This love was still present when Deal-Porter poked her head up North and never looked back.

Since falling in love with the North, Deal-Porter has lived in Northwest Territories, Dawson City and, her current base, Whitehorse.

No matter where she lives, Deal-Porter has always energetically immersed herself in the summer sun and winter snow; she is an active person at heart. She

PHOTO: Serge Michaud played sports in university and loves to spend her free time outside. She hikes in the summers and glides on cross-country skis in the winters. So when the position of program coordinator at Special Olympics Yukon became available, she jumped at it.

Since taking on the role, DealPorter has felt countless joyous moments, knowing she’s played a small part in an athlete’s suc-

cess, such as when they conquer a goal or beat a personal best.

It’s a heart-warming experience that Deal-Porter finds difficult to articulate, but she guarantees it’s found amongst all the Special Olympics staff and volunteers.

However, the joy does not come without hard work and dedication. Twenty-four hours isn’t enough time in a day for Deal-Porter, an organizational

superhero who coordinates and develops 10 sports programs per season.

Despite the heavy workload, Deal-Porter is proud that the Yukon has shaped a particularly wonderful branch of Special Olympics, thanks to the supportive volunteer base. As if to prove her point, while we were conversing, a gentleman came up to us and inquired if we were talking about Special Olympics. When we confirmed his guess, he offered up praise for the organization.

Deal-Porter smiled and thanked him. “It’s people like him, with passion, excitement, and enthusiasm for their mission, that allows Special Olympics Yukon to do amazing things,” she says. The organization doesn’t just help athletes achieve their goals and develop an active lifestyle; what’s truly amazing is how Special Olympics uses sport as a platform to boost the confidence of their athletes. This is a confidence that transcends into other areas of their lives.

Looking towards the future, Deal-Porter is helping Special Olympics Yukon work towards their continuous goals, which includes supporting athletes to train to compete in the World Games, the highest level of Special Olympics competition; encouraging their athletes to be active for life; and increasing access to Special Olympics for athletes in rural communities.

Looking towards her own future, Deal-Porter would love to stay in Whitehorse and with Special Olympics for as long as possible, as both have cemented a special place in her heart.

Veggies Ă la Barbecue

I

bet you can get your kids or even adult veggie haters to enjoy them done on the barbecue. Here are three simple and very tasty methods.

Simple Method #1 Cut carrots diagonally, broccoli any size, cabbage in slabs or just about any other veggie. Wrap in tinfoil with a little olive oil and oyster sauce; use a simple sealing fold on the foil to make it easy to open. Give them about 25 minutes in generous heat. These can also easily be done on the coals of any fire.

With stove-top cooking such as boiling or steaming, veggies have a tendency to end up limp with a great loss of flavour. With these three methods, unless overcooked, the veggies on the fork are as crisp as you want and still full of natural flavour.

Simple Method #2 Use the same or any other veggies including peppers, zucchini and red onions. Coarsely chop or leave in longer narrow pieces.

Marinate the veggies in a Ziploc bag with olive oil and crushed garlic. Two hours is best, but shorter time still gets the flavour out in the cooking. Use just enough olive oil to cover the veggies, not float them.

Use a pre-heated, very hot vegetable grilling dish (under $20 at Canadian Tire.) Just dump the veggies, oil and garlic into the very hot grilling dish and stir a flip around with a spatula for 8-9

With these three methods, unless overcooked, the veggies on the fork are as crisp as you want and still full of natural flavour minutes.

Sample to be sure of cooking time and remember for next time. When they are done to suit you and yours, serve from the grilling which will be very hot or using a glove, dump the veggies out into a serving dish.

These cool very quickly on a platter, but are still delicious even when they are cool. Keep any leftovers for an omelet next morning.

Simple Method #3 Use various peppers, yellow and green zucchini, tomatoes cut into strips and slices. In a Ziploc bag, coat with olive oil and make a shallow tin-foil tray or use a tray from the cupboard. Neatly lay out the pared vegetables coated in olive oil and sprinkle on parmesan (fresh or the type sold in a plastic container) or other tasty cheese sprinkles.

onto the top rack of the barbecue (sliding it off a cutting board always works.) Cover the tray loosely part of the time with a tinfoil piece if you find the veggies get a little dry on top.

Cooking time varies with your taste as to the texture of the veggies; start with half an hour.

These can be served with tongs or a spatula, but when moving the tinfoil tray off the barbecue, don’t forget to slide something of

the same size under it to keep it firm.

e went for dinner at Miner’s Daughter, which is in the historic Capital Hotel building and I imagine, if the walls could talk, we’d all be totally enthralled. As it was, we were impressed with the brick wall that still had the original signage painted in old fashioned lettering. Nice character.

Juxtaposing the history in the walls, the décor was modern with dark tables, muted lighting and a beautiful bar. It felt like we were going out for a special meal. The hostess seated us at a table for two in the corner and before long, the place was quite full and bustling.

We were left to peruse the menu, which offered a great variety of dishes. There were many steak options, but also enough vegetarian choices and salads. My eyes led me to the appetizers.

We took a while choosing, as we always do, and while my companion chose a dinner entrée, I thought I’d be different and order three separate appetizers. They sounded so good. My companion had tea and I asked for coffee. It

turned out the coffee was an espresso that was very, very good.

The beautiful white china was striking against the dark tables and the silverware simply shone.

All quite elegant.

The Golddigger Burger arrived for my companion: bacon, lettuce, tomato, aged cheddar and pickles stacked high between the halves of a bun and accompanied by crisp fries.

My appetizers arrived all at the same time, as I had asked. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to eat it all, the portions were so generous. A kale and apple salad, complete with pecans, cheese and a delicious, yet light, dressing sat before me. As well, I had fried cauliflower nestled on greens atop soft garbanzo beans. And I’d ordered Brussel sprout chips with a light dressing. Believe it or not, they were very tasty; my favourite.

We got talking to the newly arrived occupants at a neighboring table. They were curious as to what we’d ordered and when I acclaimed the Brussel sprouts, they just had to have them, as well.

You’d think that with all this food, and my eyes being bigger than my stomach, we’d be hard pressed just to finish the main course. But we couldn’t resist dessert. There were a few delectable sounding items from which to choose, but we ended up picking the same one: the apple crumble, topped with salted caramel and served with vanilla ice cream. It just sounded too good to pass up.

I asked for more coffee and was told it would be a separate order, not a refill, since it was espresso. For coffee that good, it was worth it.

Take the Gwich’in Language Challenge Gwich’in student at Yukon College takes social media by storm with #SpeakGwichinToMe language revival project

“Speak Gwich’in To Me has inspired the creation of On the Go Anishnaabemowin Learning (in Ontario), and inspired Iñupiaq Phrase of the Day, to change the name to Speak Iñupiaqtun To Me (In Alaska),” Firth-Hagen says.

She’s happy with how the movement has translated from online into on-the-ground initiatives. “Since creating Speak Gwich’in To Me, I have noticed a rise in Gwich’in language classes throughout the Northwest Territories,” she says. “Currently, I know that there is a Gwich’in language class happening in Inuvik.

I have been reached out to by a teacher in Old Crow, Yukon who

up in Inuvik she was concerned about the future of her traditional language, “I thought, ‘If I don’t do something now, at a young age, my language will disappear,’” she says.

“There has been a gap between youth and elders, but when I first started Speak Gwich’in To Me I was naïve and worried about the language. From what I knew growing up in Inuvik it felt like a dire situation.”

ake the Gwich’in language challenge. It’s a challenge from Norman Snowshoe, the former Gwich’in Tribal Council vice president. He said, “If you learn one Gwich’in word a day, at the end of the year you’ve learned 365 Gwich’in words.”

Jacey Firth-Hagen, 23, jumped to the challenge. She started a social media based movement, called Speak Gwich’in To Me, that is aimed at reviving the Gwich’in language.

With a Gwich’in population of around 1,900 in Canada, only around 430 people still speak it fluently. Firth-Hagen would like to see those numbers change.

Firth-Hagen created Speak Gwich’in To Me on June 26, 2015 as a social media hub for Gwich’in language learning resources such as photos, videos and sound clips, with the goal of creating awareness towards the importance of languages and a dialogue towards endangered languages.

Firth-Hagen says that anyone can be a part of Speak Gwich’in To Me by simply uploading a photo and tagging it #SpeakGwichinToMe. Follow the hashtag #SpeakGwichinToMe on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and Soundcloud to follow up on what’s happening and connect with resources that have been created.

She got the idea for Speak Gwich’in To Me at a circumpolar language symposium in Ottawa where a youth delegate from the Saami council did a presentation called “Speak Saami To Me.” The Saami are an indigenous people who live in the far northern areas of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. They are experiencing similar challenges to the Gwich’in people.

She says the movement has spread as others are picking up the idea as a way to revive their traditional languages.

“Even when Speak Gwich’in To Me was just starting I was getting messages from people all over the world both First Nations and nonFirst Nations saying, ‘Hey I really love what you’re doing,’ and asking ‘Would you mind if I copy what you’re doing?’” Firth-Hagen says.

“I received messages from all over Canada from indigenous and nonindigenous people saying, ‘Thank you for doing this.’ People all around the world and the north are interested.”

Firth-Hagen has some advice for others who want to help grow their own traditional language and culture: “Don’t be afraid to ask your elders or your peers about your language or your culture and if you want to make your own ‘Speak Gwich’in To Me,’ go ahead.” She stresses that anyone can create their own language or culture movement.

Reconnecting with one’s own culture is a personal journey, Firth-Hagen says.

“It’s a total individual movement with our indigenous languages; I never asked anyone to participate or help me,” she says.

“Everything has been done under

The Northwest Territories Literacy Council just finished an Indigenous language learning campaign for literacy month in March using a social media initiative called #MyLanguageMatters, which Firth-Hagen participated in.

“The Gwich’in Tribal Council and Gwich’in community is always actively looking to promote Gwich’in language use and share language learning resources,” she says. “Recently in Inuvik, a worker at the Youth Centre reached out to me regarding introducing Gwich’in and Inuvialuktun language learning. Which is incredible.”

Firth-Hagen says that growing

Through the success of her project, she has become more optimistic. “(I’ve met) so many amazing people! Gwich’in are proud of our culture, which is very much alive, and the language will be revitalized through elders connecting with the younger generation. Many of the elders still speak the language. We still have that connection,” Firth-Hagen says.

“Our language is totally living and breathing!”

She started the project as a way to “bring Gwich’in together across borders,” and the project is growing beyond what she initially imagined.

Johanna Gabriela Luna is directing the Speak Gwich’in To Me documentary, which is due for release in the summer of 2018. Luna is a broadcast journalist and was working at CKLB Radio 101.9FM Aboriginal Radio station in Yellowknife, (where Firth-Hagen also worked for a time), when she heard of Firth-Hagen’s project.

“Jacey is an intelligent, bright, and cool activist,” Luna says.

“She loves her culture and really wants to make a difference in her community. That’s what stood out about her. She’s passionate about revitalizing the Gwich’in language. She has started a social media buzz and put the spotlight on revitalizing the language.”

Luna says filming the Speak Gwich’in To Me documentary drove home the importance of knowing your native language.

“I couldn’t imagine if someone told me that my Spanish language is dying,” Luna says. “This film tells the importance of revitalization and language… The bottomline is, language is vital not just to communicate, but it’s part of your culture.”

Firth-Hagen is currently in her second year of Northern Outdoor and Environmental Studies at Yukon College. She plans to continue her post-secondary studies and obtain a bachelor’s degree.

In February she traveled to Kautekeino, Norway as a Gwich’in Tribal Youth Representative for the Gwich’in Council International. There she attended an EALLUReivdan Seminar: Knowledge and Indigenous Food Systems, where she presented on the Gwich’in people in front of Seminar delegates, the Saami Council, and delegates for the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna regarding endangered languages as well as the Gwich’in language.

“My end goal is to move back to my hometown of Inuvik, Northwest Territories and give back to my community and Gwich’in people through education, volunteering, and my work with language.”

The Team The crazy adventure of a temporary (or definitive, who knows?) expatriate

I

fell asleep, dreaming about all these beautiful things that the next days promised.

The sweet melody of my alarm clock rang. It was 7:30 a.m., time to get up. It was above all time to greet and take care of my new colleagues.

Here I was, clothed in my three layers, ready to face the -15°C of this morning, although we were only mid-October, then I’m on my way to the kennel, less than 50 metres from the chalet.

As soon as I opened the door and put two feet on the terrace, 50 pairs of eyes were pointing at me and their impatience was soon to be felt: barking, yapping, jumping.

They were waiting for one thing: the moment when I would pass their harnesses to them, signal for them that the departure would be soon.

Among them, there was old Pinto, who would be turning 17 years old this year, a bark recognizable among all, and even if she could no longer run, her “will to go” hadn’t really left her.

Them there was Sweet, a name that must not be trusted when the time came for harnessing.

There was Filou, who dreamt of becoming a domestic dog rath-

Upon my arrival, I met these sled dogs – my 50 new co-workers. I had to learn their faces and names er than a sled dog. He pulled, yes, but more towards the ranch and less towards his friends.

There was Eagle, with a face of teddy bear, but 10 thousand times more energetic than a stuffed animal. He was the most hyperactive of the band; he was a handful.

There was also Atlin, who was missing his tail (it froze when he was a puppy).

Arkell, who is surly with other

males, but affectionate with humans.

Devil, who played cat and mouse with me, impossible to approach, unless it was to bring him to the stake out.

Echo, who is a very good leader; timid but curious, her behaviour in the presence of stranger was funny to observe.

Willow, an enormous dog, is very good regardless of his place in

the team. He’s offensive with his fellows and yet a great claimant of caresses.

Then there is Viking, who, once his bowl was finished, would take the bowl into his mouth, turn around, and just keep it in his mouth for as long as 10 minutes or more – until I would come to retrieve it.

And there were all the others…

Upon my arrival, I met these

sled dogs – my 50 new co-workers. I had to learn their faces and names.

My brain took five days to memorize the location of each nook and cranny and start to remember some features. After which time, Marcelle, Gilles and I proceeded to a nearly complete reshuffling of the kennel to better organize it and avoid useless steps during the training sessions.

Thus, all my efforts to memorize the dogs’ names were in vain; I had to start again from almost zero. It took me three more weeks to finally know them. Well, I still always have a little moment of doubt when I see Eole, Echo and Emerald, the three sisters who are all white!

All understood quickly that training was not for now, that there was a meal to attend to, first. Once satisfied, calm returned rapidly, the opportunity for me to spend a little time with each of them, and to savour the unique place in which I found myself. The quietness is however short lived, the silence broken as soon as I approached the harnesses…

he film Hell or High Water is a modern western written

by Taylor Sheridan and directed by David Mackenzie. This hour and forty two minute flick stars Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster.

Initial impressions… wow, just wow. It is rare these days to see a movie that truly gives characters time to develop in their own right.

Gone is the clunky exposition and plot dumps that we are used to, and instead we see these character slowly unfold throughout the movie. Taylor Sheridan has crafted a careful script giving insightful and witty dialogue to characters that immediately endears them to the audience.

Chris Pine gives a remarkable, subdued performance while showing the strain and pressure his character is under, allowing the audience to continually root for

him. His co-star Jeff Bridges revises his southern lawman persona and channels a performance that rivals that of his character in the 2010 film True Grit. The actors have great chemistry with each other that create an interesting dynamic that you don’t want to look away from.

The story of Hell or High Water revolves around a modern day rancher who is robbing banks in Texas in order to pay off a loan to the bank. But instead of just being another heist movie, this movie takes the tone of a simple man trying to get by in a modern world, and asks the questions of what would you do to give your kids a better life than yours.

The movie’s action scenes, while few, keep you captivated and keep the story moving while the respite between robberies give us more insights to why these

men are doing what they do.

The cinematography is beautiful, with a terrific soundtrack that makes you truly feel like you are in the backwater towns of Texas.

My only real criticism of this movie is the pacing: things tend to slow down a little too much twothirds of the way into the story, which might damage this movies re-watch value. However, the final third of the movie pulls you right back in and gives you an ending worth the wait.

Overall I would recommend you pull up your rocking chair and check this one out.

This movie gets a solid 4 out of 5 Texas Stars.

Thoughts on Woody Guthrie

hen I first read these lines by Woodrow Wilson Guthrie I knew my rulebook had been changed: “I hate a song that makes you think that you’re not any good. I hate a song that makes you think you’re just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing. Because you’re either too old or too young, or too fat or too thin, or too ugly or too this or too that.

“Songs that run you down.

Songs that poke fun at you, on account of yer bad luck or yer hard travellin’. I am out to fight those kinds of songs till my very last breathe of air and my last drop of blood. I’m out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world, and it has kicked you pretty hard and knocked you down for a dozen loops.

“No matter how hard it’s run you down and rolled over you. No matter what colour or what size you are or how you’re built. I am out to sing the songs that will make you take pride in yourself.”

All good songs have roots, and this root was planted by Woody Guthrie. Just as the Wobblies and Joe Hill cried that there is no “pie in the sky,” Woody Guthrie was appalled at the idea that “God Bless America” should be sung by children. To worship without thinking was the greatest sin in Woody’s church.

Guthrie would take melodies that were common – in the folk

tradition of learn and do – and put his definitive twist on them. You know the songs even if you don’t know them.

As I went walking I saw a sign there, And on that sign it said “No Trespassing,” But on the other side it didn’t say nothing, That side was made for you and me.

What a cry for freedom in the land of the free?

His whole theory on copyright laws might not make sense to Lars Ulrich, a founding member and drummer for Metallica, who read testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 11, 2000 accusing Napster of copyright infringement. Guthrie copy wrote his songs with the attached message, “... anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ours, cause we don’t give a darn. Publish it.

Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that’s all we wanted to do.”

Songs such as “Pastures of Plenty,” “So Long It’s Been Good To Know Yuh” and “I Ain’t Got No Home” got Woody into some hot water during the the rise of McCarthyism and the Red Scare since Guthrie was seen as a socialist along with Pete Seeger and other left leaning folk musicians.

One to always to speak things the way he saw them, Woody’s lyrics often reflected the struggles

of working families and their resilience against the harshest of living conditions.

Woody didn’t just preach it, he lived it.

Take his walking out of the Rainbow Room in New York City. A lot of people wanted him to be some dumb Okie, wear a straw hat and everything. So Woody left this high paying gig and walked through that marble floor lobby whanging his guitar as hard as he could.

Woody later reflected in his book Bound For Glory, that “I never hear my guitar ring so loud and so long and so clear as it did there in them high-polished marble halls. Every note was 10 times as loud, and so was my singing. I filled myself full of free air and sung as loud as the building would

stand. I wanted the poodle dogs leading the ladies around to stick up their noses and wonder what in the hell had struck that joint.

People had walked hushed up and too nice and quiet through these tiled floors too long. I decided that for this minute, for this one snap of their lives, they’d see a human walking through that place, not singing because he was hired and told what to sing, but just walking through there thinking about the world and singing about it.”

No money in your pocket and refusing to take a gig that will poke fun at you, but feed your belly. What standards for a starving musician.

“The worst thing you can

do in this world is to lose touch with the people. Remember, it’s just maybe, someday, sometime, somebody will pick you up and look at your picture and read your message, and carry you in his pocket, and lay you on his shelf, and burn you in his stove. But he’ll have your message in his head and he’ll talk it and it’ll get around.”
