he Christmas and New Year’s letter was a tradition in England that predated the first Christmas card in 1843, according to www.Smithsonian.com. With the expansion of the British postal system, Sir Henry Cole, who had many friends and acquaintances and not enough time to write a letter to each of them, commissioned the printing of the first Christmas card. It was a time saving device, in order to answer all the letters he had received. The Christmas card was born.

Even in this digital age, there are many people who maintain the tradition of sending both a Christmas card and letter to family and friends.

The Christmas letter, like any form letter, is also meant to save time. Christmas is an especially busy time of year. People want to balance the desire and importance to keep in touch, with the myriad of Christmas tasks and events that compete for precious time.

If you want to reach out to family and friends to let them let know you are thinking of them, and also about the highs and lows of the past year, in your corner of the world, the Christmas letter comes to the rescue. Here are some tips for writing a memorable Christmas letter.

Use an organized Approach.

Start early. Open a document file in your computer and add little paragraphs as interesting events occur throughout the year.

Another good method is to go through the year chronologically, hitting the highlights, month by month. You don’t need to have something for every month. Focus on milestones such as births of children, grandchildren, memorable trips, changing jobs or addresses.

No one wants to hear details like that on January 1st you met the promise of the New Year by cleaning up cat vomit, and that on the 2nd, you burned your toast.

Use Humour. Humour will turn

a dry list of events into a Christmas letter that is unforgettable. People love stories, and like to laugh. A friend of mine sent a Christmas letter written from the point-ofview of the family dog. Years later, I still smile when I think of that letter, because it was so fresh and original, and told the family news in a humorous way.

The best source of humorous material is yourself. You undoubtedly learned a number of things over the course of the year. Some were funny, or could be if you looked at them that way. Perhaps you learned that the Boulder Dam is NOT in Boulder, Colorado, but is actually another name for the Hoover Dam in Nevada. Who knew?

Maybe the gas station attendant in Boulder knew, when you asked for directions.

Use descriptive and interesting language. “We camped for two weeks at Kathleen Lake,” is not as interesting as: “For two weeks, in the shadow of pristine Kluane National Park, beside the crystal clear glacial blue waters of Kathleen Lake, we drank in the beauty all around us. We relaxed without cell phones, saw the awesome spectacle of the night sky, and made bannock on an open fire.”

Give appropriate background.

Explain the relationship between yourself and the people you mention in the letter. Saying that you went to visit George is not as informative as saying that you spent a glorious week with perfect grandson George, who taught you to see the wonders of the miraculous world all around you, and reminded you of the healing balm of a child’s laughter.

Recognize those who have passed on. People, pets and relationships change. It is only right to mention that Fluffy is no longer a part of the family, and has hopefully found a new sunbeam in which to bask in the next life.

Mention the loss, but try and find something positive to say. We are grateful that we had Fluffy in our

lives for so many years, but know that she is in a better place. Don’t focus on the suffering, if there was any, but acknowledge the loss, and say something about a life well lived. Think about how tastefully those who have passed on are recognized at the Oscars. Short, sweet, tasteful.

Keep it short. Limit your letter to one page. Use both sides if you must, but limiting the space will keep the letter concise and interesting. Trim some of the less interesting items if you are running short of space. This is not a novel or diary. Be selective with the highlights.

Personalize the Letter. Add something personal between you and the intended recipient. Wish them happiness in their new home, success in their new job, or hopes that in the New Year you can get together. The Christmas letter is a form letter, but by taking a moment to write one or two lines of a personal nature, it shows you care about the recipient who is not just a name on a list.

End on an upbeat note. Perhaps you anticipate a trip, move, promotion, or child in the coming year. Look forward with hope.

Challenge your friends and family to do the same. This might be the place to include a short quote, something that urges people to be the change they want to see, or encourage them to pay forward random acts of kindness. This is a time of peace and goodwill. It is a time of reflection when people want to be the best version of themselves. With you encouragement, and the promise of a brand new year, perhaps they can.

In the coming year, laugh more, worry less and be kind to yourself and those you meet.

ith December well underway, I’m finally inured to the barrage of seasonal music that assails us whenever we set foot outdoors.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a total Grinch on the subject. In fact, there is a great canon of Christmas-related music that I actually enjoy. Most of it falls under the rubric of sacred, but some is schlocky and some is downright silly.

Novelty songs have been part of the holiday season for as long as I can remember.

I was five when I first heard “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.” Hilarious.

When I was nine, the radio waves were filled with “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.”

Creepy.

By the time Alvin and the Chipmunks stumbled out of their hollow tree and into every loudspeaker in town, I was old and wise enough to cover my ears whenever those irritating rodents started urging Christmas not to be late each year.

It is probably a deep flaw of character that permits me to take pleasure from such twisted seasonal offerings as Rolf Harris’s down-under ditty, “Six White Boomers,” or Elmo ‘n’ Patsy’s 1979 classic, “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” So be it.

The sentimental stuff has also been around for ages. For me and millions of others, Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” remains the granddaddy of secular Christmas tunes, and the Bing Crosby rendition is the granddaddy of them all.

Mind you, I am biased. Bing Crosby was an old pal of mine.

Well, more of a pen-pal.

When I was whatever age, I responded to Crosby’s invitation for children everywhere to write and tell him what we thought was the real meaning of Christmas. I wrote a little piece dripping with the earnestness only a preacher’s kid could muster.

There was no doubt in my mind that it would be one of the letters Der Bingle selected to read on his Christmas Eve radio special. Alas, it was not.

But lo and behold, about four months later, the mail included an envelope postmarked Hollywood, California. I tore it open to see a single, typewritten paragraph thanking me for my thoughtful and touching letter.

I treasured that correspondence for years, until it somehow disappeared during one of many moves.

Still, nothing whets my appetite for seasonal sentimentality quite like that silky baritone me-

andering through those timeless lyrics penned by the Jewish king of Tin Pan Alley three years before I was born.

Christmas Eve Preparations in October

rganizers for the Christmas Eve Pageant Photo Shoot were on edge as October 2 dawned. Would there be a lot of snow on the Bonanza Road sites where the pictures were to be taken? Would it be too cold that day? Would there be enough sunlight to get good shots?

It was, after all, a bit late in the season to do the shoot, which has taken place as early as August, but usually happens in September. And this year was ambitious. We usually shoot the needed pictures around the town.

Dawson City is an incredible stage setting all on its own. This year we were going out of town.

For many years now the churches of Dawson have been avoiding the complications and chaos of putting on a live Christmas Eve Pageant by creating the centerpiece of the ecumenical Christmas Eve service as a slide show and shooting all the scenes well in advance.

Digital images and a PowerPoint slide show have made it so much easier than when you had to use film and two slide projectors, but you still have to plan the ne-

We’ve pretended to be tourists headed for Bethlehem, gold rush stampeders, and a variety of other scenarios. Somehow there always seems to be a baby both

We began this year at Claim 33, a tourist stop owned by Sylvia Burkhard, who not only allowed us the use of the place, but filled in as one of the Bethlehem hoteliers who had no room at her inn.

After about an hour at that site, we packed up and moved to the Discovery Claim, which provided all sorts of backdrops. There were good spots for shepherds to watch over their flocks, for angels to deliver important messages to Mary, Joseph and those same shepherds.

There was a good site to double as a stable where shepherds and Wise Men could come to visit.

Andrea Magee and I had a great time lining up shots, trying to keep our long shadows from encroaching into the frames, and getting different angles, while director Betty Davidson and a group of volunteers herded our young actors, switched costumes, handled props and generally kept things moving.

The last stop, on the way back to town, was at Dredge No. 4, which stood in for Herod’s palace, where the king met with the Wise Men and plotted to find and kill the Baby Jesus.

Post-production began a few

weeks after this day, and on Christmas Eve St. Paul’s Anglican Church (as the largest of the three spaces) will host a joint Christmas Eve Pageant Slide Show and Worship Service early in the evening.

The choir, gathered from all three congregations, has been rehearsing since the Sunday after Remembrance Day, and the leaders of all three congregations will conduct the service for a packed house.

It’s the last big community event before Christmas Day. Dan Davidson retired from 32 years of teaching in rural Yukon schools, but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Winter Anticipation

Along with everything else, Christmas is the season of candles. We have a range of peppermint, to maple sugar and simple tea lights adorning our table

D

ecember is the Friday of the year. The whole month is filled with giddy anticipation for the budding winter wonderland, parallel to the giddy anticipation one feels for the weekend, while staring at the clock Friday afternoon.

However, there’s an art to the slow momentous build-up to the Christmas season and there is joy in slowly breaking open new holiday CDs and watching the snow accumulate and in the anticipation of Christmas, rather than the day itself.

In my opinion, it all begins with the first log on the first fire of the year.

It’s symbolic of the headaches dealing with a “wood guy” (or for extra Yukoner points it’s symbolic

of days out in the woods channeling an inner lumberjack), stacking, chopping and preparing the family for yet another winter.

Then mother nature artfully drapes her first laced blanket of snow over the town – usually, on the day you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere without a scraper, heater or winter tires.

This initial snowfall can be a calling cry to switch on the Christmas season for some, breaking out the Santa hats and replacing all music with Michael Buble’s Christmas CD – the one time his music makes it into the house. But for others, the official start of the Christmas season comes the day Starbucks launches their holiday cup.

season results in my family’s pinnacle trip of the year, chopping down the tree. Similar to my family’s cranberry picking spot in the summer, our perfect Christmas tree location is equally as ideal and top secret.

We’ll chop it down, drag it out of the woods, hoist in on top of the minivan and question our ropetying ability. Our car, now suited with a narwhal-esque Christmas tree horn, looks nothing less than the ultimate Christmas-mobile.

We’ll drive home praying those frozen ropes we dug out of the depths of our garage will actually hold the tree for the entire ride!

We’ll drag in the tree, squeeze it through the front door, attempt to stand it up and sigh as we realize we’ll be sweeping up needles in our living room until June.

That’s when the Christmas fatigue begins. Several weeks straight of making uncomfortable small talk at office parties, with people we have absolutely no communication with at any other time of the year. Downing questionable eggnog in the name of the holiday spirit and turning our kitchen into a war zone of Christmas baking, with all of the socially-mandatory cookie exchanges. Shopping for hours on end, just trying to find the perfect Christmas present for our extended family and friends.

Winter Anticipation ... cont’d able need to create nothing less than the utterly perfect Christmas, it gets exhausting.

That’s when the wise ones will let us know that Christmas doesn’t have to be perfect. Our idealist childhood memories of Christmas, that we’re desperately trying to recreate, were most likely ridden with the same chaos and confusion, which we were just not aware of. The pandemonium and turmoil of the holidays is all part of the package.

Be it we didn’t thaw the turkey in time, didn’t take the price tag off of that gift or didn’t have the time to make our grandmother’s Christmas cookies. It’s all okay.

Christmas is about making memories, the good the bad and the utterly laughable. So, this year our family will light a fire, make a mug of hot chocolate, grab a good book, snuggle up with a warm blanket and settle into a winter’s evening. No worries, no stress.

We’ll simply enjoy this Christmas season.

No Orchestra? No Problem A new ensemble, the Problematic Orchestra, makes its debut at YAC for Winter Solstice

T

rying to provide professional-calibre orchestral music in a small northern city can be ... well, problematic. Just ask Daniel Janke.

“The main problem is we don’t have an orchestra. We live in a community where the demographic doesn’t really provide for all the players we need.”

Still, skilled performers continue to move to the Yukon, and Janke believes others would consider doing so if there were opportunities to play at a high level.

So the Whitehorse musician-composer-filmmaker is approaching the challenge pragmatically.

“It’s almost like a ‘build it and they will come’ scenario. We’re trying to put together what we can, to create an opportunity for players who want to play at a professional level to perform with a large ensemble,” he says.

“We’re calling it maybe, perhaps, a chamber orchestra. And there’s a bit of humour in that approach to it, for sure.”

Enter the Problematic Orchestra, which makes its debut on Wednesday, December 21 at the Yukon Arts Centre at 8:00 p.m., in the tradition of winter solstice concerts Janke introduced several years ago as founder of the Longest Night Society.

The group’s complement of 15 performers is just shy of the traditional 17-member chamber orchestra, with a slightly different instrumental mix.

“We don’t have a lot of the winds or brass, and we have extra strings in our ensemble, so it’s a hybrid ensemble. It’s not an orchestra, it’s not a chamber orchestra, it’s a hybrid.”

Janke is quick to praise both Henry Klassen’s community orchestra and Fumi Torigai’s string ensemble for the opportunities they provide both younger and more mature local musicians.

“Players have to play to keep their skills, and both of these ensembles are important in the community,” he says.

Musician-director Daniel Janke will introduce his Problematic Orchestra to local audiences at the Yukon Arts Centre on Wednesday, December 21 His goal for the new ensemble, however, are quite different.

“First of all, we’re playing mostly contemporary music, or new music, and it’s all nuanced, special arrangements for the ensemble that is not the older, classical repertoire,” he explains.

“We’re also building towards a professional status. We’re trying to provide players with an opportunity to be pushed. The better players have more energy to put into an ensemble if they feel they’re being pushed and they’re improving as players.”

This month’s concert is a way of gauging the appetite for such a venture in Whitehorse, and “taking the first steps toward building

it,” Janke says.

The solstice event, presented by the Yukon Arts Centre, in cooperation with Music Yukon and the Yukon Film Society, will offer an eclectic menu, including compositions by Janke, as well as by ensemble members Andrea McColeman and Scott Maynard.

“We’re crossing a lot of genres.

We’re going to be playing some music that might be called jazz.

We’re also playing some music that is very traditional, classical repertoire.”

The classical component will include the well-known Adagio in G Minor by the Italian baroque composer, Tomaso Albinoni.

“Because we’re creating the

music and the arrangements for the ensemble, we can do whatever we want. It’s not playing music only by dead composers, it’s primarily playing music by people who are living and contributing to a milieu today.”

One of the highlights of the evening will be a screening of the classic 1929 silent film, The Man With a Camera, by Russian director Dziga Vertov, with the Problematic Orchestra performing a live score.

It’s Janke’s second outing with the film, which the British Film Institute’s Sound and Screen magazine named best documentary film of all time in 2014. Two years ago, he accompanied the

film with a quintet for a Yukon Film Society event.

Vertov’s film, which has no storyline or actors, chronicles day-to-day life in four Russian cities. The fast-paced epic pioneered many film techniques that have since become commonplace, including double exposures, jump cuts, split screens and tracking shots.

“It’s a beautiful piece of cinematography, and it’s naturally playful. It’s a good insight into life in Russia in the ‘20s. We’re just having fun with it. It’s going to be a playful part of the evening,” Janke says.

In some respects, the Problematic Orchestra’s debut this month is the precursor to a larger Janke project unfolding next year. He is one of several Canadian composers the Toronto Symphony Orchestra dubbed to write new pieces for its Canada 150 repertoire.

“Every once in a while, the powers that be in central Canada like to throw a bone to the colonies, so we’re humble and patient,” Janke says.

“The theory is that the same piece will be performed by a local orchestra. But, of course, we don’t have an orchestra. That’s problematic,” he quips.

As things now stand, the TSO will perform Janke’s still-unwritten piece next October with an orchestra of about 56 members.

He will then adapt it for a solstice performance in Whitehorse next December.

For the composer, that means having to “reverse-engineer” the piece to fit the number of players - and instruments - that are available for that purpose.

If Janke’s plans work out, finding the ideal ensemble of highlyskilled performers may no longer be problematic.

Brotherhood: The Hip Hopera digs deeply into life and death themes

I

t started when Sébastien Heins was a student at the National Theatre School in Montréal, tasked with creating a 15-minute piece that addressed a burning personal question.

But when Nancy Palk, of Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre, put her hands on his shoulders, tilted her head and looked into his eyes approvingly, Heins knew he was onto something more than a school assignment.

“If this show is revealing something about me that’s touching people and moving them, then I have to pursue it,” he decided.

The burning personal question Heins originally set out to address came from the fact that he was an only child, and grew up wondering what it would be like to have a brother or sister.

“I always wanted a sibling,” he says. “I always wondered which one our parents would love more, which would get more girls, which would pass away first.”

The pursuit of those questions resulted in a one-person show, now 70 minutes long, called Brotherhood: The Hip Hopera, which will play at the Yukon Arts Centre, on Friday, January 6 and Saturday, January 7, beginning at 8:00 p.m..

Written entirely in rhyme and using a musical pastiche of hiphip, R & B, funk and gospel, it spans more than four decades and puts Heins through his paces using the stage technique known as vocal masque.

“It’s a very liberating show to do, and it asks so much of me,” he says. “It makes me sweat more

The story line concerns twin brothers who grew up poor in Montréal before hitting wild success in the musical world. The older (by two minutes) brother is a scrapper and a rapper. His younger, smoother sibling is better with the ladies and prefers R & B.

Everything changes when they crash their Maserati on a freeway, with a tragic result that leaves one of the brothers to ponder some of life’s heavier questions.

The son of a Jamaican mother and a German father who travelled extensively in Europe and shared an obsession with France, Heins believes he was named after the Rue de Saint-Sébastien in

Paris, where they once lived.

Now 27, the writer and actor discovered a love of dancing in Grade 7, when he was a stammering kid who had trouble expressing himself in words.

“I never felt cool when I talked, but I felt cool when I danced. Hiphop was my escape from politeness into coolness.”

As he got older, he says, he learned to listen critically and appreciate the poetry in what he calls “an extremely diverse” musical genre.

“These weren’t just club songs about going to a club and meeting a girl,” he says.

Although his show is billed as a Hip Hopera, Heins prefers to call it hip-hop theatre that uses music and precise physicality to tell a story.

“To me, story is King. The physical specificity is Queen.”

As he attempts to “humanize people who spent their whole lives building up walls and armour and persona,” he also touches on such diverse themes as the incarceration rate for black males, brotherly love, and how pop culture affects relationships.

Heins has already performed Brotherhood a few dozen times in Toronto, and twice in New York City. In February, he will take it to Mumbai, India, a city that he says has an “exploding” hip-hop scene.

Three days after he returns, he will pack up and head for Stratford, Ontario, where he will spend the summer performing in Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens, and Sheridan’s School for Scandal.

Without hip-hop, R & B, or a stammer.

Writing Toward Inclusion

ractically unheard of - the top 10 books reviewed last year were evenly split between male and female authors.

And never before: the number of men and women reviewing books in Canada is nearly equal.

That’s what the Canadian Women in the Literary Arts (CWILA) discovered in its annual investigation of female representation among reviewers and the content they review. This year’s report, called The 2015 Count, was released in October.

“This is a major milestone in review culture,” the report committee states on its website, www.CWILA.com.

The 2015 Count examined more than 5,200 reviews across 30 journals and magazines, including five French-language publications.

A quick glance at the methodology underscores the lengths CWILA goes to to produce meticulous results.

Overall women wrote 48 per cent of reviews, men 49 per cent, with the remaining three percent written anonymously, by mixedgender co-reviewers, or by reviewers who don’t identify as male or female.

55 per cent of English-language literary opinion is formed by women, the count shows, but there is disparity in francophone media, where women account for 29 per cent of French-language reviews.

And still books by men continue to dominate best-seller lists. Part of the reason lies in who’s reviewing what. The 2015 Count found women show a slight favouritism toward female authors, but in general they achieve gender parity. Male reviewers, on the other hand, favour male writers two-to-one, or 60 to 70 per cent of the time.

Unfortunately, CWILA does not

include a single northern publication in its survey, so we have no input from authors such as Dan Davidson, who writes for the Whitehorse Star and What’s Up Yukon, or What’s Up Yukon’s Elke Reinauer, both of whom do outstanding jobs reviewing northern writing in all its diversity.

this season. Sisters in Crime (SinC) published its Report for Change: the 2016 SinC Publishing Summit Report on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Mystery Community.

SinC investigators learned by listening to their diverse membership – seeking them out and asking them what their report should include. The first hurdle was finding their diverse membership. Very quickly, it became apparent that crime writing is a white woman’s sport.

“It is clear that being a writer of colour, a writer with disability or an LGBT writer has an effect in publishing,” the study states.

“Writers in each of the groups are roughly 30 per cent less likely to be published by one of the big five publishing houses (Simon and Schuster, Penguin Random House, Macmillan, HarperCollins and Hachette) than writers without these extra identifications,” the study concludes.

And diversity in publishing doesn’t necessarily translate into change. As American author Steph Cha comments in the report, “People need the power to make positive change happen.”

Out of this, the SinC report, which is available on its website at www.SistersinCrime.org, offers a starting point for the discussion needed within literary circles.

The site includes a checklist of six habits each of us can cultivate to be an ally of inclusion, starting with mentorship to foster the belief and the ability of women to tell our own stories.

Between the awareness raised by our Sisters in Crime and Canada’s Literary Women we can become truly inclusive of the communities we call home.

plane crashes off the coast of a small island. As the search for survivors surges, the victims’ relatives gather at an inn near the crash site to hope, wonder and come to terms with new loss and old memories.

In Birds of Fall author Brad Kessler turns a story of tragedy into a lighter beast. The characters despair and move numbly through their pain without crippling the reader’s emotional reality.

Instead, while wandering through their stories, you remain a protected observer; the palpable struggle, encapsulated in moments of beautiful description, is softened.

Because I love stories that sing off the page, lift and strike – smoke becoming stone - stories that grab me by the hair, the pain so real I can’t focus my life until I’ve paddled through the next 20 pages, I found Birds in Fall to be lacking. It remained distanced from the gravity of a real tragedy. But, maybe surprisingly, I still enjoyed reading it.

The story breezes through a semi-predictable arc (which I’d like to think was the author’s intention, a way of soothing the anxious aftermath of a crash? Maybe that was my hopeful projection of it). I didn’t fear or feel uncomfortable at anytime during the book. I wasn’t gripping the pages at midnight, unable to sleep, or tearing up near the end because I simply

couldn’t leave these characters to an unknown-to-me fate, and it hasn’t become a must-read to quote and pass on to my friends.

Actually, when people asked me what I was reading this week, I kind of shrugged noncommittally, “A library book. It’s nice.”

Unfortunately, I wasn’t gasping to tell them.

But — it was pretty. Not beautiful, not sexy, not striking, but tender and gracious. Egged on by the story of Ana, an ornithologist who loses her husband, the story pulses with a delicate metaphor between the scientific study of migrating fowl and the instinctual patterns of human loss.

Still cautious of being heavyhanded, Kessler softly links the gruelling journey of birds to battling one’s way through grief. It’s a good one; the author “puts a bird in it,” and it works wonderfully. The first experience of grief, like the first journey south, Kessler suggests, is the most harrowing.

But by exercising the muscles of our intuition, we are better able to find our way forwards, each time made easier. And while travelling through stormy weather is difficult, bringing those individual experiences together will help more of us make it through.

While I didn’t feel completely grounded in this story, I appreciate the tremendous heft of life it viewed from above; and within a squall, sometimes it’s the broad-

The Wonder builds up slowly to a thrilling ending

ou may know Irish Canadian author Emma Donoghue by the fame she has gained from her 2010 novel Room, and its film adaptation. I must admit, I have neither watched the film, nor read the book. However, when it came to reading Donoghue’s ninth novel, The Wonder, which was published this year, I had a hard time putting it down.

I would not categorize this book as a great summer read, but reading it in late November, as the darkness is enveloping my northern home, seemed somehow appropriate. The topic is dark: a child refusing food in the name of God. Is it a religious miracle or a misguided er perspective that helps pull us through.

The book starts out as the lead character, a nurse who has been hired to observe the child and verify or debunk the miracle of the child surviving without food, is traveling to her assignment. It begins in a descriptive way, attending to each detail of scene and thought in a way that reminded me, as an only occasional reader of fiction, of the work of Charles Dickens: “A woman in a filthy frilled cap was stationed on the verge, a knot of children in the hedge behind her. The rattle of the cart brought them forward with hands cupped high as if to catch the rain. Lib looked away, awkward. “‘The hungry season,’ muttered the driver.”

For the first few pages I was finding it to be a little much. But then it sucked me in. One part philosophical discourse, one part historical novel, one part suspenseful thriller, all written and woven together beautifully.

I also don’t usually read thrillers. The last one I took on was Stephen King’s The Shining – and I didn’t make it to the end of chapter four. My nightmares were keeping me awake.

Donahue is gentler with The Wonder than Stephen King was with The Shining. She gives lots of time to get to know her main character, Mrs. Elizabeth “Lib” Wright, the young fasting child Anna, and the rest of the residents of this small 1850s Irish town. It is as the story starts drawing to a close that I began to feel the anxiety that a novel with true tension brings, and yes, I got some nightmares as I was finishing the book.

Emma Donoghue is an expert writer, a discovery for me, not to the rest of the world. She was born in Ireland, and lived in England for many years before moving to Canada. She has written for theatre, radio drama and literary history, and has had more than 13 other books published prior to the release of The Wonder, in September.

Her seventh novel, Room, won the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and the Commonwealth Prize (Canada and Caribbean) and was short listed for the Man Booker and Orange Prizes. It sold over two million copies and the film adaptation won the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival People’s Choice Award and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Writing/Adapted Screenplay.

The Wonder is a complex study of the period it is set in, and certainly worth the time to read.

I

have about 15 or so cast iron pots and pans with six or seven of them in constant use.

The others, too good to pass by, are kept seasoned and see occasional use. At least one fry-pan is too big for regular use, but ideal for making breakfast for a crowd.

It adds to the rustic feel at the cabin to have all this cast iron hanging along the pot rack.

After dinner clean-up with cast iron is not as problematic as people think. Properly seasoned, cast iron sheds the dinner remnants easily. Eggs and dried stew or gravy look the worst, but simply filling the pan with water will often make this stuff easy to remove. A short simmer with water really makes it simple.

I never use dish detergent on cast iron, however manufacturers suggestions include, “hold the pan under hot water, add a little dishwashing detergent and scrub it clean with a nylon scrub pad or a stiff bristled, non-metal brush.”

A consistent suggestion is never use a metal scouring pad as it removes the seasoning coating you’ve worked hard to establish and maintain.

Dry the pan immediately with a towel and rub it lightly with olive oil to keep it from drying out.

If cast iron is to be stacked, line the pan with paper towel and store it someplace where it is warm and dry. Do not store with the lid in place as condensation can occur creating rust spots.

History suggests that if you find food sticking to your cast iron, you can heat it on high heat for a short time. Take it off the heat and sprinkle in a half teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of olive oil.

Rub with a rag and wipe out any leftover salt and allow the pan to cool. When it’s cool rub it again with a clean rag.

Some people reading this will think this all sounds like a lot of work, but actually if you consider the quality experience of heat retention, even heating and fairly easy maintenance of cast iron you will accept that something so good for so long is still great now.

Garage sales, moving out sales and free-store finds of somewhat rusty cast iron pieces should not be overlooked as you can easily bring the piece back to cooking condition. Scour the pan with a

nylon scouring pad and wash it in hot soapy water. Rinse it well and dry thoroughly with a rag or paper towel, then coat the inside with lard, shortening or oil. Invert on a cookie sheet in a 350 degree oven or barbecue. Bake for an hour (it will smoke.) Turn off heat and let the pan cool in the oven.

This of course all depends on your personal thoughts about using cast iron. I would rather use cast iron than any of the high-tech coated pots and pans that seem so common in our modern kitchens.

One of the pleasant realities of cast iron is that it heats very evenly over the whole pan (including the handle) so medium heat is the setting most frequently used.

t was the short, sharp shock heard round the world – eventually.

But in the world of TopsyTurvy, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado is being staged for the very first time, and there’s a lot at stake.

Before Topsy-Turvy, released in 1999 and available on DVD at Whitehorse Public Library, Mike Leigh was a respected director known for films about life in contemporary Britain, who described himself as interested in “depicting the real world.”

It wasn’t the artifice of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas that intrigued Leigh, but the chance to show how hard creative people work to make things up.

The success of Gilbert and Sullivan’s collaboration is ebbing in 1884, with Princess Ida failing to draw in audiences. Composer Arthur Sullivan (Alan Corduner) wants to seize the moment to break from the partnership and pursue more highbrow ambitions than he feels he can fulfill with the librettos William Schwenk Gilbert (Jim Broadbent) has to offer.

Sullivan’s had it with Gilbert’s contrived “magic lozenge” plots, which depend on some supernatural device with the power to disrupt the worlds of his characters.

Sullivan’s imminent departure threatens the industry that’s formed around the creative duo, including the D’Oyly Opera Company and the construction of the Savoy Theatre. Despite the diplomatic interventions of producer Richard D’Oyly Carte and his assistant Helen Lenoir, Sullivan is unmoved and Gilbert refuses to write out of his comfort zone to placate him.

But a Japanese exhibition that his wife Kitty (Lesley Manville) drags him to acts on Gilbert like one of his own magic lozenges. A literal gleam appears in his eye as he handles a Japanese sword, and a fully realized scene from The

Crockpot Christmas Crack

What you need

his delicious mélange of peanuts, chocolate, and almond bark has become a family favourite. We found it on Facebook, and it looked so delicious, we wanted to try it, and had great results. It is a great blend of sweet and salty, chocolate and peanut. We place the final product in small paper cups and store in the freezer. A bag containing a dozen, makes a sweet gift for Christmas. There is much rejoicing if a forgotten container of Christmas crack is “found” in the freezer in August.

This recipe is in U.S. measurements. Also, one of the main ingredients (almond bark) is only available in the U.S. It is worth the trouble to get the real thing. If you are not going down, perhaps a neighbour or friend could help you obtain almond bark.

Prep Time: 15 Min Cook Time: 2 Hr 30 Min Cooking Method: Slow-Cooker/Crock Pot INGREDIENTS 1 - 16 oz jar unsalted peanuts (approx 450 grams) 1 - 16 oz. jar salted peanuts (approx 450 grams) 1 - 12 oz bag semi-sweet chocolate chips (approx 340 grams) 1 - 12 oz bag milk chocolate chips (approx 340 grams) 2 - 10 oz bags peanut butter chips (approx 560 grams) 2 - 1 pound packages white almond bark or vanilla candy coating (approx 900 grams) DIRECTIONS: 1. Layer all ingredients in a large crockpot in the order listed (starting with peanuts).

2. Turn the pot on low, cover with lid, and leave sitting for 2 hours.

3. Remove lid and stir to combine.

4. Replace lid and leave sitting for another 30 minutes.

5. Stir again and spoon mixture on to wax paper, non-stick aluminum foil or into small paper cups.

6. Allow to harden for at least 1 hour.

7. Enjoy responsibly!

Cutting the Cost of Wine

Wines that are easy on the waistline and the wallet

E

verything about wine is fun.

It is delicious on its own and it is wonderful with food.

There is a wine to match every mood, celebration or weather.

All of this fun isn’t exactly free, though. Wine costs dollars and calories, two things that many of us put great effort into managing.

With a little knowledge you can enjoy delicious wines while minimizing the total cost.

Many factors go into the final cost of a bottle of wine and not all of these factors make the wine taste better.

Land and labour are two of these factors. Of course, the land does affect the taste of wine but the price of premier land is dif-

ferent everywhere. Focusing on countries that have excellent growing regions with lower land and labour costs is one way to find great wines with great prices.

Two examples are Chile and Argentina. In Chile, there are two regions that have the reputation for making quality wines: the Maipo Valley and the Colchagua Valley. A good-quality, delicious wine from these areas will typically cost under $20 per bottle.

If you are exploring wines in Argentina, the region to look for on the bottle is Mendoza. Mendoza is most famous for Malbec production but the region is great for producing wonderful wines from many grape varieties. Since these

regions are known to be premium growing areas, the names are typically printed on the label. Write down the three region names and take them with you the next time you are looking for a good wine at an affordable price.

The caloric content in alcohol is not shown on the label but, believe me, it is in the wine. To obtain an accurate calorie count you need a lot of information about the wines’ specific gravity, residual sugar, alcohol level and more. If you are a super keen math enthusiast, it is easy to find formulas online showing you how to estimate calories in alcohol.

For those of you who would rather just see some numbers, this is

for you. There are seven calories in each gram of alcohol. Carbohydrates and protein both have four calories per gram and fat has nine calories per gram. If a wine is sweet, the sweetness adds some carbohydrate calories into the mix increasing the caloric total.

For this article, I will assume that the wines are dry to demonstrate the difference in calories from alcohol. A wine with 10 per cent alcohol will have about 520 to 590 calories in the bottle.

That’s 125 to 140 calories per six ounces, or 185 to 210 calories per nine ounces.

If you are drinking a wine with 14 per cent alcohol these numbers increase to 725 to 825 calories per

bottle. That’s 175 to 200 calories per six ounces, or 260 to 300 calories per nine ounces.

Choosing wines with less alcohol also means choosing wines with fewer calories.

When trying to save dollars, visit the Chile and Argentina sections of the wine store. If you are trying to decrease calories, look for wines that have less alcohol.

T

here are only three families of trees represented in the southwest Yukon.

Sounds easy enough? It isn’t, so don’t feel bad if you can’t see the trees for the forest.

• The willow family (Salicaceae): willow and poplar • The birch family (Betulaceae): alder and birch • The pine family (Pinaceae): fir, spruce and pine Note that I haven’t included tamarack (larch) because this tree doesn’t occur naturally in the southwestern Yukon and neither do cedar and hemlock; they are coastal trees.

Deciduous trees Salicaceae Willows (Salix) are extremely plentiful, with approximately 45 species found in the Yukon. Some willow species are as small as my pinky toe and around 10 species can become “tree” size. Still, these large willows are still considered shrubs because they have

Mature balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) have bark that is rough all the way up. When they are young, I recognize them by their thicker twigs and bigger buds, which contains the fragrant balsam resin. They also have a more uniform shape, with the tree crown coming to a nice pointed top. Black cottonwood is another subspecies of Populus balsamifera, it is not very common here.

Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is our most beloved poplar; aspen are present almost everywhere in the Yukon. Aspen trees can be recognized by their light coloured, smooth-yet-dusty bark, which only becomes dark and furrowed at maturity. A whole stand of aspen can be one clone.

Yet aspen are not uniform. Although they may be mostly tall and straight, their branches are at odd angles, which gives each tree its individual shape.

Betulaceae Speckled alder (Alnus incana), which is also called grey alder, is a shrub – just like big willows.

This alder can reach a height of five metres. Its cute little cones will help you tell an alder from a willow. There are two kinds of alders around here, the other is too small to be called a tree. This one has speckles on its bark.

Alaska paper birch (Betula

Alaska Paper Birch neoalaskana) is not very common around Whitehorse, but you might find them when you walk on the north side of a hill or mountain. I recognize the tops of birches from afar by their reddish colour and the denser, more intricate, lacelike look of their crown. Often surrounded by alders, which I had to climb through to take a photo of the beautiful white paper bark.

tree. Subalpine fir grows, as its name indicates, halfway up the mountain. To me, it can still look like a spruce, but its colour is more bluish. Fir bark is definitely distinguishable because it is smooth and has blisters that are fun to pop.

A forest of Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) is recognizable by its yellowish green colour and rounded tree tops.

Up close, you can see how pines have long needles in pairs of two.

White spruce (Picea glauca) is our main spruce. It is abundant and it is the one with short prickly needles. A spruce forest is recognized by its blue green colour and the trees are spires that point straight up at the heavens.

I won’t add the black spruce (Picea mariana) here because in all my wanderings I haven’t been able to positively identify one. The spruce that grow in and around Whitehorse are usually white spruce.

Cutting a dead white spruce for firewood

Krummholz is a scientific term that refers to a clump of stunted trees or a single stunted tree. These are the trees that you will find above treeline, where trees are not supposed to grow anymore. Of all trees, these dwarf specimens are my favourite.

My second favourite trees are those that grow just below treeline. Spruce trees often stand singular here and can become very large and seemingly reach their full potential. I call them brides.

Trembling aspen grow smaller here, not unlike krummholz, but just below the treeline, they make forests full of odd shaped trees that look like gnomes to me. And pines are totally beautiful here; their grandeur fully displayed.

I also love dead trees. Not only do they look amazing – like skeletons or totem poles – but also they give us warmth by the way of firewood.

And then there are Christmas trees.

Why Iceland is a good place to grow food

Iceland’s farmland is experience a resurgence with agritourism on the rise

A

lthough Iceland has been getting a lot of press lately as a hot – metaphorically and geologically speaking – tourist destination, it hardly seems a likely go-to spot for an agricultural experience. That however is exactly what landed me in the middle of the blustery North Atlantic in October along with seven other Yukoners. We all received generous funding from the federal government’s Growing Forward program to attend the Circumpolar Agriculture Conference held every two years in one of the world’s northernmost growing regions. I’ll spare readers the details of the conference proceedings, but am keen to wax lyrical on another nation that grows food north of sixty – and fills a much greater proportion of their needs than we do. It’s something to aspire to.

We needn’t feel too bad: we don’t have the moderating ocean to keep us between -10 and +20 all year, and our habit of freezing hard makes hydro-stations more challenging. Nor do we have hot water shooting, pouring and seep-

ing out of the ground with which to heat greenhouses, homes, and even parking lots.

I had ample opportunity to both observe and submerse myself in this phenomenon, from steaming pools nestled in remote fjords to the tiled neighborhood facilities in Reykjavik with a series of tubs in two degree increments. I’d often soak with the water up to my eyeballs to get out of the lashing rain driving off of the North Atlantic.

The Icelandic government has a goal of supplying all of the meat and dairy for the country, via sheep and cows respectively. They have a strong protectionist policy that means foreign food is very costly in a country that is already known for being prohibitively expensive to visit. Iceland has suffered rural decline in the same way as the rest of the world, and agritourism is being seen as the way forward for revitalising rural landscapes and providing more varied opportunities for people choosing agriculture. Cows line up at an automatic milker in an Iceland dairy – the country aims to satisfy all it’s residents’ milk and meat needs with its own agriculture tourists, my partner and I had the pleasure of staying at a sheep farm in the remote Westfjords where tourism, though a welcome additive to the income stream, in no way took over from the farming. Stay tuned for that story in the coming weeks, in “No Farmer Left Behind”.

ist loop out of Reykjavik, which is called the Golden Circle, where we visited three farms that have embraced tourism in equally substantive but different ways.

Our first stop was a dairy where the barn had been converted into restaurant and ice cream parlour, with the cows still in residence munching their hay on the other side of a window. The hospitality portion including accommodation is run intergenerationally by family members that had given up on farming, but were drawn back by the idea of an educational and tourism opportunity.

We also visited a greenhouse operation, Fridheimar, that was getting the year’s tomato crop underway – yes, in October. Geothermal energy is in evidence most obviously in the warm and steamy atmosphere, but also in carbon dioxide captured from a nearby vent to improve photosynthesis and the use of tuff (pumice) instead of soil as a growing medium. They too have embraced agritourism in a big way with an attractive little café in the greenhouse itself, serving a never-ending pot of tomato soup and a bar specializing in takes on the classic Caesar. An information panel in the café cites low levels of pests, diseases and weeds as benefits of a northern climate and the island’s isolation, and shares that the operation uses 1.2MW of electricity (a combination of hydro and geothermal). Greenhouses have been in use on the site since 1946.

The third farm on the visit had a rather unique take on tourism – a very well-kept and diverse operation including a small dairy, field crops, a micropress for canola oil and a small grain mill, and it capitalized on what was nearly a disaster when a nearby volcano erupted and buried the farm in ash. A visitor’s centre opposite the farm plays a very well-shot documentary of the events that took place during and following the eruption, and serves to educate visitors on not just the occasionally spectacular nature of vulcanism, but on the rapid and efficient Icelandic emergency response. “Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered,” seems to be the main message.

Get up close and personal with a variety of migrating birds while watching the bird banders at work. Park at the large brown cook shelter, follow the adjacent foot trail down to the lake shore and follow the sign-age.

An insider’s look at the plant based, vegan café, The Pitted Date in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

I

f you think Mexican food, you might think meat. Sure, Mayan cuisine includes an exotic array of spices, herbs and plantbased delicacies- elote (corn on the cob often served with crema, chili powder, lime or cheese), tamales (pockets of corn wrapped in banana leaves and steamed), sopes (fried masa dough with beans and other toppings), and chilaquiles (fried tortillas covered in salsa). But generally, Mexico is a mutton mania. Whether roasted, slow cooked, braised or boiled, the tantalizing smells of onion, cilantro and bubbling meat linger in the air.

Playa Del Carmen is one such meat mecca (hello burritos, taquitos and enchiladas!) but surprisingly, it’s also a haven for vegetarian and vegan delights. In the small beach side suburb, there are over ten vegan cafés and restaurants.

For the uneducated, meat loving foodies, ‘vegan’ means no consumption of any animal products, including meat, dairy (milk, cheese, butter and yogurt), eggs and honey. People who are vegan believe that veganism is not just a cruelty-free diet, but a way of being that promotes respect for all living organisms.

While it may be considered

extreme by some, human food consumption has a drastic and potentially irreversible impact on the planet. Raising animals for food consumption requires massive amounts of energy, water, land and food. Animal agriculture and livestock produces staggering amounts of global greenhouse gas emissions. Veganism is a movement which aims to increase consciousness and sustainability.

The Pitted Date, owned by Vancouverite Emma Faroh, is one of these conscious vegan establishments located in Playa, just off central Quinta (5th) Avenida and Calle (Street) 26.

A large port window that exhibits the café’s humble kitchen can be seen from the street, a choice that head chef Faroh consciously made. Clean eating is all about transparency and consciousness, and she wanted customers to be able to view the artistry that transpires in the kitchen. There’s nothing to hide here and customers would probably be surprised to know that all the gourmet vegan fare is prepared using only a small two burner electric stove top and a panini grill. The rest is magic, love and a whole lot of passion from Faroh and her Pitted Date team.

“The first ingredient in all of our

meals is amor,” Emma says with a smile.

So how did this B.C. born gal

end up owning and running a vegan café in Playa? The short story is a restaurant upbringing (Faroh’s dad was a chef), a wild and adventurous spirit, her connection to all living things, and a fateful Tinder date.

The longer version is when Faroh first moved to Mexico, she was drawn to Tulum (located about 45 minutes away from Playa) and on her second day there was offered a job as a raw food chef at a yoga retreat in the jungle. Though the opportunity didn’t pan out as she hoped, it was there that Faroh realized there was a niche market for health and awareness.

Faroh returned to her home city of Vancouver shortly after, but this ambitious manifestor put her “singing bowl out to the universe,” as she says, which eventually called her back to Playa to work in timeshares (vacation property rentals).

Selling and marketing was one of her fortes, but Faroh decided it was finally time to open her own vegan café. In completing her vision, she decided she wanted a companion for her entrepreneurial journey, which lead her to ‘swipe right’ on Mexican born Tinder match, Oscar Alonso.

“Within the first week of dating I told him, we’re going to open a

vegan café and have a baby,” Faroh laughs, “and he said okay!”

That vision has been realized and then some. Their vegan café is now thriving, as is their ten-monthold baby boy.

The café features nutrient dense and superfood delights like raw carrot cake (with dehydrated pineapple, kiwi and cashew cream cheese icing), banana sushi, lentil patty paninis and their infamous omelettes, made with a vegan ‘egg’ that took Faroh nearly a year to perfect. The Pitted Date’s vegan egg is featured in forms like the breakfast burrito and the bomblette (a quinoa and vegetable stuffed vegan egg that will truly rock your world). Speciality coffees are served with fresh, daily made almond milk and nearly everything in the café is made from scratch.

Inside the conscious café, the stocked vitrine beckons, full of raw, plant-based and gluten free desserts. For those of you wondering how chocolate cake without milk and eggs can still be decadent, let me tell you, it is possible and The Pitted Date’s two-tiered chocolate cake in Playa is one of the best (vegan or not).

all the café’s raw desserts feature dates as part of the ingredients. Dates have naturally occurring sugars that lend themselves amazingly well to desserts. The catch is, they must be pitted first, hence the shop’s name. On any given day, you’re likely to find one of the café’s employees arm deep in dates, chopping and blending the fruit to incorporate them into bases, sauces and fillings.

Business owner Faroh has been a vegan for three years now, and she says she is amazed how much more intuitive and connected she has felt since making this lifestyle change.

She switched to a vegan diet after deciding to become more active about animal rights (and yes, she cries watching any documentaries or video clips about tortured animals). Faroh says when people become more conscious, they feed their body and mind, and start sharing this care and connection outwards, which extends to ani-

mals and the environment.

“Having a vegan café is not just a trend,” Faroh says. “There’s an ‘ism’ on the end of veganism because it’s a lifestyle, and when you become vegan you become more conscious about the planet and the environment.”

“I’m not here to change people’s minds about eating habits, I’m here to bring awareness and share knowledge.”

While Faroh has succeeded in creating a conscious database through her café, she has bigger dreams still. She would like to see her vegan establishment reach franchise level, with restaurants located in every city around the world.

That’s a way to go yet, but for now, the café continues to garner rave reviews on the Caribbean coastline and raise cruelty-free consciousness, one vegan plate at a time.

Aislinn is an art therapist, writer, artist and adventurer born in Whitehorse, Yukon.

She currently lives, writes and doodles on the beach in Mexico, and when not drawing or writing, can be found working at The Pitted Date.

The main benefit of these sports is that you can go down hills at a rapid speed. The second advantage is that large mechanical devices carry you up the hill so that you can descend at speed again. Third, you can go really fast, downhill! Fourth, did I mention the speed?

Drawbacks to these gravity-fed sports include the preponderance of knee injuries, the high cost of equipment (even used), and expensive lift tickets. Of course, you can ski down mountains where no lift ticket is required, although this benefit is tempered by the long drive and the slow walk up the large hill.

Give me the goods: Going downhill fast with a minimum sweat investment is a fun way to spend time in the white stuff.

Après-ski culture can be particularly satisfying.

Cross Country skiing Voted the sport Most Likely to Involve Hand Knit Garments, cross country or Nordic skiing is the working person’s sport.

The pros: There’s no feeling like gliding through the forest with nothing but the sound of your own cardiovascular system pounding in your ears – it’s a great workout. While a pass will give you access to great trails at Mount McIntyre, you can also ski for free on nearly any snowy trail, while wearing 40-year-old gear found at the Marsh Lake transfer station.

You can cross country ski on Mount Mac’s set trails, or you can ski off-piste Furthermore, cross country skiing is the gateway to backcountry skiing, skijoring (dog skiing) and the more extremist biathlon (skiing with munitions).

The cons: Cross country skiing can be a grunt; in some conditions, it is simply not possible to set free the sprightly forest elf within you. As well, if you’ve read Harry Potter, you’ll recall that waxing is considered one of the Dark Arts, and is often regarded as a sport unto itself.

The straight dope: Cross country skiing is a great workout requiring only a modest investment.

It might lack thrills and spills, but it’s a lifelong sport that’s good for your muscles, gentle on your joints, and gives you license to wear a fanny pack.

Snowbiking Say hello to Whitehorse’s hottest cold sport. Snowbiking is a kinder, gentler version of mountain biking. Take out the bumpitybumps and imagine winding your way through a winter wonderland.

The benefits: it’s a fantastic workout, loads of fun, and your bike can double as your vehicle.

The cons: fat bikes are dropping in price, but you won’t find them lying around the dump. Snow conditions can be variable, so you might set out for an hour long ride cont’d on page 37...

Friends, Food & Drinks Skiing with a pulk only to find out that deep snow has doubled that time. On the rare occasion that you fall over, it can be spectacular, cold, and might involve a hit to the crotch.

Tell it like it is: If you like riding bikes, you like winter, and can add a bike to your fleet, snowbiking is for you.

Curling Admittedly, this is the only winter sport that you can’t actually play outdoors, but as a time-honoured winter activity, it bears consideration.

Curling provides a friendly community loyal to its sport. Curling is social, but even the quiet types can just put their heads down and hurry hard. Other benefits: it’s an equal opportunity sport for men and women, can be played by all ages, and accommodates many abilities with adaptive tools. There is little equipment required — most can be borrowed — and the fees are reasonable.

Furthermore, being an indoor sport, your climate is carefully controlled, and you’ll never have to wee in the woods.

Curling does have some drawbacks. While all that lunging and sweeping is excellent for your health, it won’t give you a sustained workout. For those who like to head out into the vastness of winter as the wind takes you, curling might not be your choice: it generally requires playing at scheduled times in a specific place with a team of reliable and trustworthy individuals, although you can play as a free agent, also called a spare.

Hit me with the low down: Curling is an inclusive, social, and

strategic sport. If you like heavy objects, but not necessarily heavy lifting, curling might be for you.

There’s something for everyone under the northern lights.

Keep your toes toasty, your head hot and get out there and enjoy some winter.

Something Different is Always Brewing

Winterlong Brewing Co. opens new tasting room

interlong Brewing Co. is absolutely, positively, not a mass production brewery -- in spite of market forces.

The owners, Marko and Meghan Marjanovic, call market research “playing around.”

They call complications “the fun part” and frustrations are “challenges.”

And, when they have finished playing around and overcoming the frustrating fun parts, yet another beer is born. Then they see people lining up out the door of their new tasting room to have growlers filled and bottles snatched up.

With the tasting room only a couple of months old, they must hear a lot of discussion around the merits of the latest beer.

“Not really,” says Marko. “It’s mostly conversations bouncing back and forth among friends.

“It is casual, welcoming, you see a mix of people from construction workers and locals and 20-somethings all mixing and sitting at each other’s tables.”

“We are new here,” says Meghan, “so people are also chatting about the tasting room.”

Indeed, the tasting room is bright and funky. Tabletops sit upon kegs and bar-height stools are comfortable. There are no televisions to show the game and no salty snacks to encourage thirst for another beer.

“We are a neighbourhood pub,” Marko says of the tasting room part of the business. “We aren’t open late and we are not promoting the idea of sitting here and drinking a lot of beer.

“You can drink a pint or two and take some home.”

“We encourage people to cab here and we like to see people leave their cars overnight when they have to,” adds Meghan.

“And we are looking into arranging a downtown shuttle that can come at closing time and at certain times of the day.”

They are also looking at having live entertainment; they have already hosted crib tournaments and an oyster event with a local supplier.

“And we’ve been dabbling in foods,” says Marko. “Scotch eggs and two different meat pies with local beef and our oatmeal stout… it’s a real local experience.

“So, some people are now coming here for the food.”

This is still a brewery, but instead of finding a good recipe that satisfies a broad demographic and producing it in mind-numbing quantities, the Marjanovics like to play around and create unique beers.

To explain why, they offer the coffee in front of them as an example: “This is Kicking Horse Coffee, but we also drink Bean North,

“Oh, and we just found another one, too: Fire Bean Coffee Roasters,” Meghan says.

“That’s what we do,” Marko continues. “We like to experiment and try different things.

“Improving beer is a subjective thing; the perfect beer to somebody may be too hoppy for somebody else.

“The perfect beer is the one that is perfect for the moment,” says Meghan. “My tastes change depending on the day or the time of day.”

The frustrating part (er, challenging part) is it takes three weeks for the Marjanovics to know if a beer will turn out okay.

There are only four main ingredients for beer: malted barley, water, yeast and hops. But there are hundreds of varieties of each and the water can be mineralized in different ways.

Experimenting takes place in the 350-litre fermenters in the back so that mistakes won’t be as costly as the fermenters twice that size.

To accommodate the everchanging menu of beers, they had custom tap handles made with little chalkboards on the handles.

When a new beer is ready, they go straight to social media on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

“They come in droves,” says Marko.

“One beer, Spruce Tips, is brewed in the summer with handpicked spruce tips. It sells out in a day; there are lineups all day.”

Winterlong is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.; on Fridays and Saturdays it is open noon to 8 p.m.; on Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.

Winterlong’s tasting room and off sales outlet is located at 83 Mt. Sima Rd. To get there head south on the Alaska Hwy, turn right onto Mt. Sima Rd, and it’s the second building on the right.
