A

fter living in Vancouver for three years I’d become accustomed to people giving me strange looks if I smiled at them in the elevator or while waiting in line for a coffee. When I returned home to the Yukon it was a pleasure to rediscover its camaraderie and community.

People band together to help one another and make everyone’s life just that little bit easier.

I moved in with my partner in Riverdale in April and, for the first time since living in my parents’ house in Dawson City, I found myself in a home with a wood stove as our primary source of heat.

There’s something about wood heat that’s so different from electric or oil. It feels warmer somehow. I’d forgotten how nice it is.

My 16-year-old cat is making the most of it as well – by camping out by the Blaze King whenever there’s a fire going. He even fol-

lows my partner around and pesters him until he builds a fire!

When I bought my first house in Dawson I dealt with the snow by ignoring it until my Dad came by and shoveled it – the same way I dealt with my lawn in summer. Now that I’m living with my partner I expect I’ll have to chip in with the chores a bit more. A bonus that comes with living in Whitehorse, where it’s warmer than Dawson, is not have to deal with frozen pipes. When I lived in Dawson I spent many a miserable morning bailing out my bathtub and blasting icy pipes with a hairdryer so that I could take a shower.

We had our wood delivered in mid-October and the huge, fourcord pile in the driveway was daunting. I remember the drudgery of stacking wood growing up in Dawson. My father would direct while my brother, sister, and I

formed an assembly line from my dad’s half tonne Toyota pick-up truck to the front porch. I wasn’t feeling too keen on repeating the dreaded chore now.

The big day arrived and so did a few of our friends and neighbours! I was so glad to see our friends; I knew that the workload would be so much lighter with their help. We got the wood splitter going, two wheelbarrows moving wood in and out of the garage and quickly fell into a rhythm.

Our neighbour’s four-year-old son also pitched in, while chatting to us about his twin sister – who, he informed me, is also four. After a mere two hours of hard work the wood was split and neatly stacked in five long, tall rows. After the last piece of wood was stacked, and the tarp was folded up, it started to snow. Just like the movies

doesn’t seem like such a big deal.

We couldn’t believe how quickly it had gone by. As we were folding up the tarp the wood had been sitting on it started to snow. Just like a movie.

We retired to our kitchen for a bowl of homemade broccoli cheddar soup and marveled over how quickly we had completed the task. It reminded me of an Amish barn-raising, and we offered to help everyone out with their next wood delivery.

ormer Yukoner Jerome Stueart and Yukon author Marcelle Dubé will read together form from their books on Dec. 13 at Baked Cafe. It will be an evening about fantasy-novels.

Marcelle Dubé is still deciding from which of her many books she will read: Kirwan’s Son, which is set in a world untouched by humans; JILIMAR, a story set in a world without technology; or Obeah, which is set in the Yukon, but with a different species than humans living in the territory.

Stueart will launch his newest book, The Angels of Our Better Beast, published by ChiZine Publications. It is a collection of short stories and poems. He also did the illustrations for the book. Stories in the the book are fantasy genre, but also have a connection to dayto-day life. The story “Bear With Me,” for example, is about onlinedating. It turns out that the man on the dating-website is a bear.

“My failures in online dating inspired me to do that story,” Stueart says.

Inspiration for his werewolf story came from the Kluane Lake Bluegrass Festival, he says. He wrote “Sam McGee Argues with His Box of Authentic Ashes” in response to Steve Slade’s Heritage Yukon’s prompt for an Arts in the Park Heritage Day. Jerome Stueart currently lives in Ohio, but lived in the Yukon for 12 years and became a Canadian citizen in the territory. Stueart left two years ago and he feels very happy to return to Whitehorse for this event.

“It means a lot to launch this book here in Whitehorse. I feel like I became a writer here,” he says.

“It’s right for me to come back and launch here. I figure if you have to leave the Yukon, it’s nice to come back and show something for your time away! To say, okay, I did something with your investment in me. But also, this is home.”

The reading will take place Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Baked Café starting at 6 p.m. Along with Marcelle Dubé, Steve Parker will also do an opening reading.

Dawson in a Fictional Sense

The biggest change is probably the site of the first murder victim, who is said to have fallen into the Yukon River from Crocus Bluff. In actuality a fall from there would land you on the Front Street portion of the Klondike Highway.

All of this is in keeping with what writers have done to Dawson over the last century and a bit.

Jack London set a lot of his tales out in the bush or in some of the smaller mining communities in the Klondike, but Robert Service didn’t hesitate to change things around to suit his stories. The Trail of ‘98, which I covered here some weeks ago, is full of rearranged geography, but a more obvious alteration is the gun battle in The Shooting of Dan McGrew. The NWMP didn’t allow handguns into town, and the fight there is more of the classic American western variety common to the USA, where Service actually spent his time during the real Gold Rush years.

Whitehorse’s David Thompson has given us a couple of books with Klondike settings. He uses both Dawson proper and the suburb of Rock Creek as his main backdrops (well, half of the second book is set in Haines Junction) and treats them as settings appropriate to his main characters, who are sort of warmed over free spirits.

Vicki Delany’s four volume Klondike Mystery series doesn’t pretend to be accurate. The hotel/bar that Fiona MacGillivray runs never existed during the Gold Rush, but it feels right and the stories are historically sympathetic enough.

There are some other books I could mention, but I’ve about run out of space for this week. Perhaps another time.

Dan Davidson retired from 32 years of teaching in rural Yukon schools, but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

bout the same time as I was reading Elle Wild’s very entertaining mystery novel, Strange Things Done, I happened to watch a discussion between best selling novelists Stephen King and Lee Child. Part of the discussion was about settings, and Child noted that he had set one of his novels in New York, a city with which he was very familiar, but he had found he had to change the geography of the place in order to move his people around. He needed to keep the plot moving and stop the narrative from turning into a travel guide.

When I interviewed Wild, for a story I have yet to write, I mentioned that she had done the same

sort of thing in reinventing Dawson for her novel.

The book is set in 2004, but the ambiance of the story is way more like the late 1960s. Central characters drive across town a number of times in the story, and a few blocks seems to take about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, it seems to take no longer than that to get to a cabin several kilometres up the Dempster Highway, which would be a good hour’s drive in real life.

At one point Wild needed to establish that a character had gone missing, and used the standard trope of uncollected mail at the door. There is no home delivery here.

I

only had one night in Dawson City and I was hoping for a clear, cold night. I’d been dreaming for years of what it must feel like to bask in the glow of a sky filled with northern lights.

This was my chance.

I’d been in Whitehorse for a couple days and the cold nights brought flickers of green dancing over the river, but they teased and disappeared, like mischievous faeries.

I was giving a talk at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture, which meant leaving most of my things in Whitehorse and flying up in a turboprop overnight.

It was a gorgeous day. Clear, bright, and suddenly cold. When I arrived in Dawson City, I found patches of clover encased in the first frost of the year. They were perfect and bright, like cut-glass costume jewelry.

The light was beautiful. Sun cut sideways, the wooden boxes of the historic downtown cast crisp shadows that stretched long down empty streets. I’d come north seeking the Aurora Borealis, but light shone with clarity in the bright of day. I was so swept up in its magic that the dirt on my shoes felt special. The romance of the north is a powerful thing.

When I finished my talk, it was just getting dark. I was lingering,

Teva Harrison saw the northern lights for the first time this fall, in Dawson City enjoying talking, when a woman I’d met on the plane came running in. “The lights!” She was breathless with the joy of sharing.

I ran outside and caught a whisper of lights that licked the horizon and danced away. Night was still falling. Everyone was excited for me. They sent me back to my hotel to put all of my clothes on.

Since I’d only brought two outfits from Whitehorse, I layered them, borrowed my blanket from my hotel room, and headed down to the banks of the river.

By the time I got to the river bank, the horizon was full.

I sat there, wrapped in blankets, nestled in the curve of a rock, mouth agape, for hours.

The lights pooled green along the water. White light spilled, low, but just out of reach. Colours shot through in luminous streaks.

I was inside a rainbow. The lights swirled above and all their shine was brighter reflected off the river.

This was the best of all possible moments. I wanted to share it, but I was so grateful to be al-

lowed to be still with my awe.

What a gift. I had one night in Dawson City and I was living a waking dream of Yukon magic.

I texted my husband that I was planning to sleep in because I over-indulged on the Aurora Borealis. He thought I might like to hear that my book had been short-listed for a Governor’s General Literary Award, so he called to wake me up anyhow. Can I tell you? That news, all wrapped up in such a special night, will always be a little bit of Yukon magic for me.

Wool Gathering

The second Wool Gathering takes place Dec. 11 at the Heart of Riverdale Community Centre

he Heart of Riverdale Community Centre, located at 38 Lewes Boulevard, is a unique location in Whitehorse. Involvement of community members across generations is the focus of the centre. There is programming to nurture children and youth as well as adult programs.

The large open meeting space on the second floor will host the second Wool Gathering on Dec. 11 between 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Jo Stewart of Sticks, Strings and Stewardship - which is a knitting and crocheting organization in Whitehorse - in conjunction with the Knitting Circle at the Heart are gathering people, craft and stories to celebrate knitting in the community.

The Wool Gathering will feature a yarn swap and show-andtell, and there will be the unveiling of the first clue in a mystery shawl knitting pattern. If you love knitting and have an item you can donate, bring it along.

The Dec. 11 event will be a lot of fun – for knitters, novice and experienced.

Jo Stewart will speak about knitting and mindfulness. My research for this story came up with two interesting articles about knitting and its benefits.

Dr. Sarah McKay’s article, “Why Crafting is Great for your Brain: A Neuroscientist Explains” - which is found on the website, www.mindbodygreen.com, states the following: “Knit one. Purl one. Knit one.

Purl one. Knit one. Purl one. The rhythmic and repetitive nature of knitting is calming, comforting and contemplative. It’s not a stretch for you to imagine knitting as a mindfulness practice, or perhaps a form of meditation.”

Jane E. Brody writes in a New York Times article, “The Health

Benefits of Knitting,” that knitting is similar to meditation. Knitting helps people relax and lessens anxiety. Knitting relieves stress and refocuses the mind. Karen Zila Hayes, a life coach in Toronto, has knitting therapy programs such as Knit to Quit and Knit to Heal.

I can hardly wait to hear Jo Stewart expand on this new research.

I have been asked to speak about The Sock Project - 2017 Canada 150. I have been knitting for many years. It was only 15 years ago, though, that a very kind school volunteer, Rose, taught me to knit socks. So… my plan to celebrate Canada’s rich knitting history unfolds. I have visited every province and territory. I have lived in Manitoba, Nunavut and Yukon. I am looking for sock yarns and patterns which make me think of special places in Canada.

I am planning some knitting demonstrations in 2017. Check out the The Sock Project – 2017 Canada 150 on Facebook. Follow my sock knitting adventure across Canada to celebrate the country’s birthday. While I see The Sock Project as an art adventure, I am also encouraging local knitters to knit socks for Sticks Strings and Stewardship. Jo Stewart has gracious-

ly donated sock yarn. It will be available at The Wool Gathering.

Baked pastas reheat incredibly well, so it’s a great dish to assemble in the morning and then heat in the oven after you’ve spent the day playing in the snow.

Moose happens to be a personal favourite, but if you’ve found yourself with a freezer full of ground bison (or caribou, or even beef or chicken) then use what you have and adjust the seasoning accordingly.

Simmering the moose tomato sauce METHOD:

INGREDIENTS: 1 pound (500 grams) small tubular pasta (ziti, rigatoni, elbows, penne all work well) 1 ½ pounds moose 1 tsp dried oregano ½ tsp dried thyme Pinch of red pepper flakes 1 onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 28-ounce can of crushed tomato Salt and pepper to taste 1 pound (500 grams) mozzarella

Set oven at 375ºF. Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the pasta according to package directions. Reserve ½ cup of the cooking water from the pasta, then drain the pasta and set aside to cool.

t is winter in the Yukon, why would anyone even be thinking of paddling?

If you are a breast cancer survivor, and would like an experience of a lifetime, in company of other breast cancer survivors, plus the chance to prove to yourself that you can live a full and active life, read on.

Paddlers Abreast is looking for eight breast cancer survivors to paddle their beautiful voyageur canoe from Whitehorse to Dawson in the 2017 Yukon River Quest.

This will be the 17th year that Paddlers Abreast participates in this race. We started in 2001, when a group of breast cancer survivors approached the Yukon

Quest, who at that time oversaw the running of the river race, too.

They asked the organizers to allow them to paddle a voyageur canoe in the canoe and kayak race from Whitehorse to Dawson. They agreed!

Paddlers Abreast became the first of that class to do the race.

Since then, the class has grown to up to 15 voyageurs in some years. We are very proud of the fact that, all those years ago, we started that class.

The reason we did it was to have the Yukon version of what breast cancer survivors do in cities down south: paddle dragon boats. At the time, we had no dragon boats here, and even if we could get one, there was no local community of dragon boaters to paddle with.

Paddling a voyageur canoe has proven to be a good substitute.

If you are, or know of, a breast

cancer survivor who has finished treatment and are back on the road to recovery and would like to give this a try, or just want more info, please contact us.

We start training in January.

The training includes 12 one-hour sessions of paddling while sitting on the side of the Canada Games Centre pool. Cardio and strength training also happens during these months. When the ice goes off Schwatka Lake, usually by the end of April, we hit the open water, paddling for three hours twice per week, and for longer periods on the weekend.

The race starts June 28, and ends in Dawson on July 1.

Those of us who have paddled before keep on doing it, knowing how important it is that we be there for others who get this disease. We feel that this race is an excellent way to take control of your life after feeling that you are

totally not in control.

In the past, we have not always been able to find eight breast cancer survivors to fill the boat.

If that is the case, we open the spots in the boat to supporters of people with breast cancer. If you are one of those, we invite you to also apply, with the provision that priority is given to survivors.

We fundraise in the community every year, to cover the team and recreational paddling expenses, so that participating in Paddlers Abreast is not an impediment to anyone. We do not receive government funding. Any donations above $20 is eligible for a charitable donation receipt. When we have a surplus, we donate money to Karen’s Fund, which gives money to help defray expenses for people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. We truly apcont’d on page 13 ...

rom stunning jewelery, fine arts and unique crafts to quality prepared foods and personal care products hand made by Yukon artisans, the 12 Days of Christmas has become one of the largest Yukon craft fairs over the past decade.

From its humble beginnings as a one day Christmas market in 2005 it has gradually grown and changed.

Originally called The Yukon Made Store, it was held for two and a half weeks in the old Reitmans store of the Qwanlin Mall in 2006. The following year it moved to the old Legion, which is now the food bank.

It operated for a week, closed for a day and then opened for another week. In 2008 it ran for 12 days for the first time but it was still called the Fireweed Christmas Market. In 2009 it started to be called The 12 Days of Christmas and was located at the Old Fire Hall. And here it grew and flourished from 2009 to 2014. In 2015, after much discussion, the market decided to move to the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre to provide more room for vendors.

But what is it really? It is a craft sale like no other.

Running for 12 days it has a staff and a centralized till where purchases are pooled to make shopping easier for customers, who are able to browse at their leisure. They can come back for a second time or a third time or as many times as they like.

It is a craft sale where the vendors have had to work together for the greater good of all. Which isn’t always an easy thing to do for people who are often very independent in their own small businesses. But as a result it has built a community.

It is a craft sale that allows for new vendors to sell their wares and learn a bit about what it means to be in a craft sale, along with providing a place for established vendors to showcase their goods for those who have come to love them.

It is a craft sale that has included the public with art demos, craft workshops and a daily prize draw.

It has been celebrated with Christmas carolers and live music as well as visually with slideshows of the artisans and their products over the years.

This year the 12 Days of Christmas will be continuing in this same tradition. Located at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, there will be live music as well as daily draws. There is also a new Community Table that will provide space for smaller producers to display their products. The fair opens on December 9th at noon and runs until the 20th. It will be open Monday to Friday from 10am to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 7pm.

Exercise May Eliminate the Harmful Effects of Overeating When holiday binging strikes, keep up the fitness to protect your health

s the season of overindulgence is upon us, binging and overeating becomes an almost daily occurrence. From cookies and treats at the office to endless dinners and potlucks, for the next month we will all likely be filling our bellies beyond their normal capacity.

People who for 11 months of the year may eat well and control their portions with wills of steel reach for baked goods and second helpings. While it may seem harmless to overeat for the holidays, since it is just for a month, our waistlines can feel and show what a difference a month makes.

Beyond the extra five or 10 pounds, we may also be seriously damaging our health. Even though seasonal overeating may be for just a short period of time, it is enough to have a negative impact on our bodies and health.

Occasional overeating can cause an increase in adipose tissue (also known as fat) and metabolic abnormalities. Researchers have

found that as little as one week of overeating is enough to do this and to impair blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity, which both increase the risk of prediabetes.

While overeating – even if it’s just time to time – can do irreparable damage to your health, there may be hope. There is evidence that suggests exercise can help to mitigate the damage of these bursts of indulgence.

A recent study that was presented at the American Physiological Society’s Integrative Biology of Exercise VII meeting in Phoenix, AZ explored the possible protective effects of aerobic exercise for occasional bingers.

The pilot study out of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor subjected four lean and active adults to a week-long binge fest.

The participants ate 30 per cent more calories than their daily requirement while continuing to exercise as they usually would. For at least six days in the week, they did two and a half hours of aerobic

Although simply not overeating may be the best option, during the holiday season – especially when it is cold and dark – this is far from easy to accomplish. So when you schedule your holiday dinners and cookie exchange parties, don’t forget to also make

The researchers, led by study author Alison C. Ludzki, measured oral glucose tolerance and looks at samples of the subjects’ fatty tissue before and after the week of overeating.

They found that the exercise helped to protect from the damage typically caused by overeating with glucose tolerance remaining stable.

The researchers also looked for signs of inflammation in the fatty tissue such as pJNK/JNK, pERK/ ERK, and circulating C-reactive protein.

For people who overeat and do not exercise, there would normally be an increase in inflammation. In the University of Michigan study, it would appear that exercise also protected against this health concern.

The participants in the study had none of the markers of inflammation and no signs of a change in the chemical composition of fat.

I

n our exploration of colourful collective nouns used to describe groups of animals, we have learned that many of these terms have come to us from the Late Middle Ages, more than 500 years ago. Some of these quaint words were collected in the Book of Saint Albans, which consisted of three treatises in the arts necessary to an English gentleman: hawking, hunting and heraldry.

In this article we will examine some collective nouns for mammals.

According to Environment Yukon, there are an estimated 70,000 moose in the Yukon – more than twice the human population.

The collective noun for moose is a herd. It doesn’t matter if the moose is on land or water.

Male moose are called bulls and females are cows. The young are called calves.

Moose are not native to England, so colourful collective nouns are not plentiful. Perhaps we could suggest some collective nouns for consideration. An ambulation of moose. Or, if two males are fighting, a clash of moose. Also, because of their long legs, a stride of moose could be appropriate.

Elk, on the other hand, fare a little better in the collective noun department. Referring to a group of elk as a herd works, but the more colourful term is “gang.” A gang of elk.

The Online Etymological Dictionary tells us that gang originates from the Old English, “a going, journey, way, passage,” and in Old Norse, “a group of men, a set.” The word then evolved into any band of persons travelling together, and was also used to describe animals, herds or flocks.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that elk are often seen together. I often see them along the highway on my way to Whitehorse.

Buffalo, although not native to England, are associated with four collective nouns. One thinks first of a herd of buffalo. “Gang” is also used to describe multiple buffalo. Troop of buffalo is also used. My favourite, and thinking of the buffalo that can be seen around Liard, an obstinacy of buffalo. They are so large, and seem to think they can do whatever they wish. If they want to cross the road and stand in front of your vehicle, they will do just that.

There are also numerous col-

lective nouns for monkeys, including carload, cartload, tribe and troop. My favourite of this group is troop. According to Online Etymology Dictionary, troop comes to us from the 1540s Middle French, “body of soldiers,” and from Old French “band of people, company, crowd.” I can clearly see a group of monkeys following each other through the jungle.

Also on the list is barrel of monkeys. It’s a common expression, “more fun than a barrel of monkeys,” which is usually used in an ironic manner to describe something that is not at all fun.

Wolves, hyenas and lies come in packs. Dogs, if wild, are also a pack. If they are domesticated, they are a kennel.

There is even a collective noun to describe a group of collective nouns - a catch of collective nouns?

Everyday he checks in, ties on his indoor shoes and shovels numbered files across a desk; it’s a beige existence. But obsessively-driven Björn will not be distracted from his scheme to move up the corporate ladder.

While at first take you may assume he’s simply following the normal pursuit of hierarchical success, it quickly becomes obvious something ticks false.

Yes, Björn is painfully socially awkward (and we all love rooting for the quirky underdog), but he is also uncompromising, strictly-controlled and even in his most basic interactions with others there’s an undercurrent of his narcissistic and paranoid plan for advancement and opportunity.

Written by Swedish playwright Jonas Karlsson, this fictional study of obsession with power has similar characteristics to a theatre piece: it moves at a fastpaced tempo without flowery applications, but reaches surprising depth in a short space.

specific descriptions are applied sparsely and with little romance, much like our general image of the tedium of corporate office culture. In fact, this story bleeds with a sharp illustrative style that sets a tone; Karlsson’s use of style and language to relay the restraint and confusion in the story is outstanding. With first person narration we are near to the tumult of Björn’s reasoning but, without another perspective, we’re left on edge wondering what or whose reality truly is real.

Simultaneously, the clips of summarized dialogue model the terse atmosphere of living in Björn’s head. While many will find humour here, be warned: if this book is a comedy, it’s a dark one, and the psychological trip it undertakes will likely have a polarizing effect in people’s appreciation of it.

Quick and off-kilter, you’ll skim through these pages with confused laughter and mixed feelings of doubt, delight and discomfort. It’s a truly fine-tuned writer that can make you feel so much in a small novel like The Room.

Vanessa Ratjen likes books more than most things, except when she can read books and eat cookies from Baked, because multi-tasking is a good skill to have.
