ount Sima is “the first mountain in North America to have a jump line in.” That’s what Graham Pollock says. He’s the head coach of the Yukon freestyle ski team. A jump line means a skier can take more than one jump in a row while going down a hill. Sima has three jumps in a row. The jumps are “necessary for training, or for the tricks we do,” says Pollock. Soon, ski hills across North

America will have jump lines in, and freestyle skiing season will be in session. Freestyle skiing means skiers perform tricks on jumps and rails. This is what the Yukon team focuses on. Rails are just as important as jumps, says Pollock. Skiers will do three tricks, or features, on a rail, and transition to hitting a big jump and doing a trick off that. The Yukon team focuses on rails and jumps, but freestyle

skiing also includes mogul runs. Moguls are big mounds on steep slopes, mogul skiers manoeuvre the mounds. Half pipe is another freestyle component. “Half pipes” are literally half of a pipe. Skiers whip up the side of it and spin into the air, land, and whip up the other side of the pipe, into the air. Skiing in the park at a hill is freestyle skiing. Some hills have better-developed parks than others. Apart from being cold

enough to build a park early season, staff at Mount Sima focus energy and money on building up Sima’s park. Many ski hills don’t do this because they are resorts, and want to attract tourists. Tourists like outdoor skating ponds and tube rides. Sima doesn’t attract tourists, but it can build up its freestyle infrastructure to attract skiers from across Canada for the early season training. This was written the week of November 16. The parking lot at Sima was fairly filled up with rental cars and vans. Graham Pollock and I had to talk in the staff trailer outside, because the lunch room was packed with skiers. And this is pre-season. The athletes come to Sima and pay good money for the early season training. Last year, the National Next Generation Team came and

trained early season at Sima. This is a team of athletes who get national funding. They are the level before the Canadian olympic team. This is the first time a team’s trained at Sima. The athletes “loved it,” says Pollock, and pushed to, “get this comp.” By that he means the first Canada Open Tour of the season. It’s a national freestyle tour for skiers on the national freestyle team. It’s a four-stop tour. Whitehorse is first, then Silver Star, in B.C., Mount St. Louis Moonstone, in Ontario, and Stoneham, in Quebec. Over 80 athletes will participate in it. “This is the first time Sima has hosted a comp at this level, aside from Canada Games,” Pollock says. He explains how comps get athletes practicing the tricks they’ve been training for all year. Usually, the first comp isn’t until midJanuary, and then athletes are in “competition season,” as he calls it. Then, there is a comp every two weeks, or “even tighter sometimes.” That’s why teams are eager to come to Sima for a pre-season

comp, it gives a skier a chance to set a base for itself, show them where they are, what they need to work on, before the competition season is in full swing. The Yukon team’s highest level-athletes are between 15 and 20. There will be seven who will travel around North America for competitions this winter. Pollock is the team’s first ever head coach. He’s responsible for every athlete on the team, which he estimates is 40. They start at the “jumps and bumps” level and go up from there. Having a head coach means the team can practice all year. “Summer training is where you make or break,” says the coach. He’ll travel with the seven skiers to competitions, they are going to four out-of-territory this winter. The Canada Open Tour is in Whitehorse on November 24 - 27. Go to the Yukon Freestyle Ski Association Facebook page to watch videos of the team freestyle skiing, and for information on the upcoming competition. What to do on Sunday Night I

n the 2016 film Captain Fantastic, Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen – The Lord of the Rings, A History of Violence), is a father with meticulous survivalist and socialist ideals. He lives live an isolated off-the-grid life in the forests of the Pacific Northwest with his six children. The children are subject to extreme physical training that borders on abuse. Ben Cash also educates his brood in a way that strictly reinforces the ideals of his specific belief system. Little room is left for the children to discover the world for themselves, as they live out their childhoods in a societal vacuum. Upon receiving devastating news, the family is forced to leave their idyllic forest home (on their big blue school bus named Steve) and travel to New Mexico to fight for the dignity of their kin. The interactions between the Cash family and the folks they meet along their journey prove to be awkwardly challenging. And the family’s alternative lifestyle is scrutinized as different perspectives offer insight and criticism.

Silicon Valley. In an interview with Variety in June, Ross explains the motivation for the film: “I wanted to ask those questions about what it means when you’re responsible for another person and begin to curate their life.” Is Ben a dedicated and loving father, or an eccentric child abuser? The answer really depends on our own world view. The film garnered the award for directing called the Un Certain Regard at the 2016 Festival de Cannes, and was also an official selection in the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Deeply hurt by her mother’s callous attitude toward selling her as a bride, Sonita laments the injustice of this monstrous tradition through music. In her powerful song and music video, “Brides for Sale,” Sonita poignantly expresses the intolerable pain of being sold by someone who is supposed to love you, and the feeling that you were Captain Fantastic Mongrel Media born to be a bartering tool instead of an individual. Sonita was written, directed and produced by Iranian filmmaker Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami. She said she struggled with her role as impartial filmmaker as she feels so deeply for Sonita’s situation. In this film two strong female artists unite to provide the world a stark window into the truth. The film garnered the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary, along with the Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for documentary. Sonita screens on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. followed by Captain Fantastic at 8 p.m. at the Yukon Arts Centre. Tickets available at YukonTickets.com.

Food is Medicine

Starting the day with a bowl of oatmeal is a good way to stay warm from the inside during the winter months

by Stephen Potter

I

s your digestion slow? Feel cold all the time? Tired and achy? Low mood? Lack the energy to get through your day? If any of these symptoms are a problem for you and you’re struggling to feel well, no matter what you try, Chinese medicine and acupuncture might have the answer for you. You could be suffering the effects of Yukon’s long, dark, cold winters. But don’t worry, you don’t have to leave our winter wonderland. Just try these easy-to-follow suggestions. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a medical philosophy that dates back thousands of years. It aims to unblock the body’s energy, to increase circulation and restore balance. At its heart, it aims to keep a person in harmony with nature. This

means that we take note of the seasons and try to work with them. Nature’s energy is classified as Yin and Yang. Winter represents the most Yin aspect in the Chinese year. Yin is dark, cold, inward, slow energy, as compared to the Yang of summer, whose energy is quick, light, fast, hot and expansive. Winter then is said to be a time for rest, contemplation and nourishing our bodies. So where does that leave the average Yukoner, who loves to ski, bike and snowshoe throughout those cold, long winter months? We have long winters and it would be impractical to hibernate right through till spring, but by being aware that we are pushing against the natural flow of the season, we can take preventa-

tive measures to ensure we stay healthy. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are a number of external pathogens that can influence the health of the body: hot or cold, damp or dry and wind. In the Yukon we are predominantly subjected to the effects of cold and dryness, which can penetrate more deeply if one is exposed to wind. Cold drains the digestive qi, causing what is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as spleen qi deficiency, with symptoms that manifest as pain, lethargy, and poor digestion. Think of a crick in the neck after being out on a cold windy day without a scarf, or low back ache from being cold and stiff. Though you apply heat to sooth the pain, but wouldn’t it be better to not allow the cold to penetrate in the first place? Everyone knows the benefit of wearing thermal base layers, but there’s a lot we can do to stay warm from the inside. The first thing I recommend to my patients is a warming start to the day – a nice hot bowl of oatmeal. Steel cut oats are among the best as they are unrefined and must be cooked slowly, allowing the grain to break down, being

easily digested, and most warming to the body. Add dried fruit, nuts and honey for extra nutrition and deliciousness. At lunch, soup is a good idea – nourishing and hot, easily digested, it makes the perfect meal in a cold climate. Dinner is normally a hot meal so doesn’t require change for most people, but stews in a slow cooker are a great idea if you find yourself not having time to prepare anything from scratch. Eating warm food aids digestion by helping us stay warm on the inside – we are warm-blooded creatures after all. Cold injures the digestive system by draining the spleen qi, so avoid cold drinks, cold cereal, ice, smoothies and salads, where possible, as these consume the precious energy needed to break them down and warm them up to be digested properly. Staying warm inside and out keeps our energy up and it increases circulation, preventing lethargy, low moods, compromised immune systems, and prevents injury by keeping our muscles warm and nourished. Happy winter.

Raising your kid to say the F-word Ending violence against women starts with the kids by Selene Vakharia

M

ark Rutledge, a father of three, and John GlynnMorris, a father of two are raising their sons and daughters to be feminists. With one in four women experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, both realize the importance of their role as fathers and parents. We all hope that the kids in our lives will grow up to be caring, empathetic and respectful adults. Unfortunately, we can’t rely on this happening naturally, since everywhere they look are harmful messages around what makes a man a man and a woman a woman. They’ll see these toxic messages in movies and the in 3000 ads they take in each day. They’ll hear jokes about harming women and be told that, “Real men don’t cry,” or that as a girl they are prettier when they smile. Teaching kids about gender equality, respect for women, and healthy relationships is one of the greatest services that we as parents, relatives, mentors, and educators can do to make this happen. And, it’s one of the biggest roles we can play in ending violence against women in our community. “I think it is easier to talk to the youth and change their mindset at a young age,” says Rutledge. “When they are young, they are more adaptable to change, they have a greater understanding. They’re our future, and I think this is where we need to [focus].”

Rutledge is a member of White Ribbon Yukon, an organization led by men that works to end violence against women and girls. As a father, he has an open dialogue with his two sons and one daughter about gender equality and respect. “With my kids I talk to them on a daily basis,” he says. “I think that is key to a lot of these problems – to have open dialogue, to talk, and to have really frank discussions. Even when they are young, you can still have a great conversation.” Glynn-Morris is also having conversations with his son and daughter. He leverages teachable moments where they arise – often in children’s books. “With my daughter where I really noticed it was in stories,” he says. “The gender stereotypes are just unreal, and there is indirect violence against women in language…We spend a lot of time explaining things like this book talks about firemen but you can be a firefighter too.” Glynn-Morris and his wife try to role model gender equality and respect in their home by sharing household tasks and talking to their young children about harmful stereotypes when they come up. “I remember my son saying something about dad is out working because dad’s work,” he says, “and we talked about that.” While Sarah Frey doesn’t have children of her own, as a Leader for Girl Guides and a member of

the Yukon Consent Crew, she believes that all adults have a part to play in teaching kids about gender equity. “Anyone older is an authority figure and is a role model,” she says. “[So] to conduct yourself in a manner that respects women and stands up for women has a major influence on young men.” On the Consent Crew, she tries to engage young men, where she feels there is big gap in our global conversations around violence. “I think young men can be the biggest ally,” says Frey. “It just comes down to education [and to] understanding what their words mean and how their language contributes to rape culture and how it hurts women as a whole.” Sarah Murphy, Program Coordinator of Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre (VFWC), also wants to invite adults without children to take an active role. “When we’re talking about challenging harmful social norms, everyone has a role to play,” says Murphy. “Our messages and our actions resonate throughout society, and whether we interact with children regularly or not, they are impacted.” She highlights the importance of challenging stereotypes that when ingrained in our media and society and accepted as natural

can do harm for boys and girls. “By talking with youth about gender equity,” says Murphy, “we are working to create a generation of people who will not stand for it.” Each year, VFWC and Les EssentiELLES team up with other local organizations for the 12 Days to End Violence Against Women campaign. This year, the campaign focuses on youth and the

role all adults can play in teaching them about gender equity and respect. There will be ten days of free events offering tips and fun ways to engage with the kids in your life. Visit endviolenceyukon.com for more information about the campaign.

I cooked this exact recipe and had my daughter Tracy over for lunch. She thought it was wonderful, until I told her it was the tongue. Well, need I say more?

Combine the following in a medium-sized mixing bowl: ground meat, suet, salt, onion, the pepper and finally the pepper. Shape this into 6 patties about 1 inch thick. Wrap one slice round the edge of each patty and secure with a toothpick. Place this on a rack in a broiling pan. Broil this at about 2 inches from the source of heat for 5 minutes or to a point satisfactory to your liking. Turn over for the same amount of time.

BAKED BIG GAME HEART Another part of the big game animal that should not be discarded is the heart. You will need the heart, 2 cups of soft bread crumbs, 1 medium sized chopped white onion, 3 tbs. melted fat, 2 tbs. chopped celery, 2 tsp. poultry seasoning, 2 tsp salt, dash of pepper.

Now place patty on your slice of toasted French bread on a warm platter. Now spoon all but 2 tbs. of drippings. Add your wine to the broiling pan, stirring to make sure you loosen all the small pieces. Finally pour sauce over patties. This should make about 6 servings.

First wash the heart thoroughly under cold water. Next cut the centre and tough cords out of the heart and set the heart aside to dry. Put the fat in a frying pan and cook the onions and celery until the onions are a golden brown. Place and mix the crumbs over the heart and

Oh Sugar, Sugar, You Got Me Wanting You Sugar is hidden in many foods and can negatively impact your health

T

hat addictive white powdery stuff is in everything. From store-bought spice blends to fruit juice to ketchup to even vitamins, it’s everywhere and in much higher amounts than you might think. The average Canadian consumes about 88 pounds of sugar a year. Young people aged nine to 18 and men consume over 100 pounds a year. That is over 10 whole bags of pure sugar. Eating large amounts of sugar has been scientifically linked to heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, cancer and cavities. A recent 15-year study found that those that got more than 25 per cent of their daily calories from sugar were more than twice as likely to die from heart disease than those who got less than 10 per cent of their calories from sugar. One key issue with sugar is that it is nothing but empty calories. It takes up space in your diet without offering any nutrients, which leaves less room for healthy and nutrient-rich foods. Worse, it can actually deplete nutrients as your body tries to stabilize and regulate post sugar consumption. Vitamin D is one such nutrient that is depleted by eating sugar. Others include vitamin C, chromium, magnesium and calcium. Consuming sugar-laden foods and drinks is also a sure-fire way to turn you into an addict. The initial spike in blood sugar that it causes is followed by a crash, which causes you to crave more. This can lead to experiences of anxiety, irritability, headaches and dizziness when you skip a meal. While other factors in life – such as caffeine and stress – can also contribute to blood sugar imbalance, the regular intake of the

white stuff plays a key role.

How much sugar is in common foods? It is actually astounding to look at how much sugar you are eating when you are just going about your day. Beverages such as sodas, juice, iced tea, sports drinks and energy drinks are some of the

Fruit in its whole form offers a sweet treat without the negative effects of sugar.

2230-2nd Avenue

• Sports drink: 35 grams per bottle While fruit contains naturallyoccurring sugars, it doesn’t have the same detrimental effects as added sugar or even as it does in juice form. Fruits are full of fibre, which slows the uptake of sugar into the bloodstream and counters much of the negative effects. Fruits also have numerous nutrients, which make them a healthy addition to your daily diet. The best way to stop craving sugar is to cut it out of your diet. Eliminating or reducing foods and beverages that have high amounts of sugar is a great place to start. When you first begin doing this, the cravings and symptoms of withdrawal may be pronounced. A diet that focuses on whole grains, vegetables, and lean proteins can help stabilize your blood sugar to minimize these symptoms. Sugar is hidden in most packaged and processed foods. Sticking to whole foods and steering clear of the packaged aisles in the grocery store can help you avoid sugar.

Selene Vakharia is a holistic worst culprits when it comes to hidden sugars. Looking at popular brands, here is an idea of how much sugar is hidden in common foods.

old and darkness. That is what most people who live Outside think of when they think of winter in the far North. Thanks to many websites, however, knowledge of the aurora borealis has spread. People all over the world are able to glimpse the magic that the shimmering lights add to a winter night. The aurora borealis is a natural event that stirs souls. While few are able to say much beyond variations of, wow! when they first see a strong display of aurora, the experience is often described, during later analyses, as spiritual. It is surely one of Mother Nature’s finest winter gifts to the North. The aurora borealis, and its

Shades of green are the most common, and the fairly rare red is the one most sought by aurora watchers. For several years, a small group of Yukoners shared aurora reports and photos on Facebook. In November 2013, I created the Yukon Aurora Alert page on Facebook to help more people enjoy the experience. Even though only Yukoners and close neighbours (those in q CONTINUED ON PAGE 13 ...

Visitors who have done their research will also have other activities in mind. People arrive from around the world – including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Korea, and of course the United States and other parts of Canada. Several tour operators and bed and breakfast owners focus heavily on attracting aurora enthusiasts. Summer visitors do sometimes get a light show. Though they don’t have a chance of seeing the actual aurora unless they’re here after the middle of August, thousands stop at the Northern Lights Centre in Watson Lake to watch a

While some scientists say that it’s impossible, others acknowledge that so many people report hearing sounds described as hissing or rustling, there must be something to it. Although it hasn’t happened often, I’ve heard them a few times. Nobody has yet recorded those sounds, though – in the Yukon, there is always a new challenge awaiting the adventurous. Do you know someone who has made a memorable contribution to transportation in Yukon? Dawn Bartsch, 2011 winner of the Order of Polaris award, contributed to the development of aviation in the North by helping to break down gender barriers and making the dreams of flying an accessible dream for today’s young women.

Did you know that if you have one or more low tires, your fuel economy will be significantly decreased? Therefore continuing to add air to your tire when it runs low may be costing you more in fuel economy than it would be to have the tire repaired. Studies have shown that the decrease in economy may be as high as 15% in excess fuel consumption. Furthermore when you operate your vehicle with a low tire it may cause permanent damage to the tire causing it to be prematurely removed from service due to irreparable damage.

Hampton is a research professor at Alaska’s Geophysical Institute. He works with scientists who shoot rockets up into the aurora, trying to learn more about the electrical, magnetic, gaseous show of northern lights. Hampton is in charge of the cameras that ride the rockets,

TIPS FOR BUILDING AN EFFICIENT FIRE: • Never burn green, wet, treated or painted wood. • Dry and split your firewood about six months before burning. • Gradually reduce the air supply after starting or feeding a fire. A sudden reduction of air can make the fire smolder, increasing pollution.

rora displays three or four nights a week for the rest of the winter. Next year, they’ll slow down to about one or two per week, he says. The northern lights show has been particularly spectacular for the last two years because the sun has been at its cyclic peak of producing sunspots, which in turn send out solarwinds full of charged hydrogen particles. These winds create magnetic forces

which react with Earth’s magnetic field, lighting up gases in the upper atmosphere to cause the neon glow we see from below. The green is from excited oxygen; the less common pink is from nitrogen, says Hampton. Sunspots, which are pockets of very strong magnetic force, peak on the sun every 11 years. The winter of 2014, 2015 was the high point of that cycle and the low point should occur in three to four

years, Hampton says. But even when the skies seem quiet, “There’s aurora happening all the time; it’s just very very dim,” he says. But at this time of high sunspot activity, scientists are keen to get a closer look. They normally launch two to three rockets per year from the Alaskan research range, but this winter they will fire off six. The range’s usual staff of six will swell with visiting scien-

tists, including many from NASA. “There will be 90 to 100 people on the range,” Hampton says.”It takes a lot of work.” The visible green line of the aurora is about 100 to 120 kilometres above Earth, Hampton says. The rockets will soar well beyond that — up to 300 to 400 kilometres or more, as high as the International Space Station. They will take photos and measure particle and electrical fields, among many other things. Hampton says it’s important to study the aurora because solar particles can cause electrical chaos and expand the atmosphere, disrupting communications on Earth — including GPS navigation, radio and television — and even throw off satellite or-

bits. “The aurora creates a lot ionization in our upper atmosphere,” he says. But do the rockets’ cameras get a good view as they zoom up through the aurora? “If you fly above and look back down, you see a mirror image of what you see from the ground and it’s pretty nice,” Hampton says. “But in the middle of the aurora? It’s not very exciting.” Check the Alaska Geophysical Institute’s aurora forecast at www.gi.Alaska.edu and click on “Aurora Forecast.” Becky Striegler is a Whitehorsebased writer.

silver mines and the steamboats that transported the ore. The couple happily moved back to their modest log house on the river after the war, so Harvey spent his early years as an only child exploring a wilderness playground. He recalls their home was “…16 by 20…maybe a little larger…divided into two portions… Dad had built ceiling-high cabinets and a passageway through. So, the front of the house was the kitchen, living room…and then the back part was…two little rooms... we had a large…45-gallon drum… that was our heat, woodstove… my mother of course…was quite handy and had it fixed up quite nicely….” Hidden History Society Yukon New Horizons for Seniors Program Harvey Burian Interview February 10 and 2015 Transcript p. 6. Life on the river was isolated, especially in winter when the steamboats were not running. Sometimes visitors did stop in to catch up on the news. Harvey remembers: “We had radios…and we got mostly Alaskan stations…KFRB in Fairbanks…[and] in the last few years…we had a Ham radio…and the RCMP office in Mayo had one and they would call…weekly or periodically at agreed times, to check and make sure we were alright.” Ibid Transcript p. 26. Mary supervised his correspondence lessons, which came from Victoria. As roads replaced steamboats the Burians moved to Mayo in 1953 where Renny worked as a mechanic, Mary cooked and Harvey started school. Harvey’s parents were both raised in immigrant families, where the first language was not English. Born in Germany, Renny came to Canada as a child, moving to the Yukon in his twenties to work as a woodcutter during the

Depression. Mary was born in Vancouver after her parents emigrated from Japan. She came to Mayo in her teens to help her sister Ruth (Chiyo) and husband George (Otoyemon) Nagano run the GN Café. When Renny and Mary married, English was their common language, so that was what Harvey learned at home. Although his mother was technically classified as an “enemy alien” and his father was of German descent, during the Second World War Harvey remembers they were well liked and accepted in Mayo society, though Mary was required to carry an identity card during the war. Her parents and other relatives in B.C. were less fortunate, losing their homes and farms during the enforced evacuation of Japanese people from coastal areas. Harvey grew up oblivious to any difference between himself and other children in town: “It wasn’t until…probably…14, 15…I really realized that my mother was Japanese….I knew she was Japanese in a sense, but I never thought of her being Japanese… because to me, obviously, she was my mother, but…in town, from the time I could remember, she was just one of the townspeople. And, she never talked about any kind of feelings that she had that…people

didn’t accept her or anything. It seemed that in the smaller communities, back in those days… there may have been some people who shunned Asian people…but certainly if that were the case, my mother never spoke of that. And I never in the time that I was growing up, until…I got older…I really didn’t sense anything. The only thing I had in school…some of the kids who probably thought I was Chinese…would call me a Chink…I just thought, ‘Ok, that’s a nickname that they’re giving me’, and I accepted it.” Ibid Transcript p. 8. Harvey went from small town life on the Stewart River to a big city university after graduating high school in Mayo. “It was an interesting transition being from a very small school where there were about a hundred…to UBC, which at that time had about 16,000 students.” Ibid Transcript p. 29. He credits his secure family life and lessons learned in early years for his later successes: “... the benefits were that I learned… to work a lot by myself because… there were only two teachers covering …multiple courses…so you learn to basically work on your own and that probably was a benefit when I got to university….” Ibid Transcript p. 30.

While he was at university Harvey also started learning more about his Japanese heritage from his aunts and uncles in Vancouver: “…it was second year university… [in] a sociology course…I went and talked to my uncle and…he gave me some pictures and…information…about my grandparents…and I found out things that I hadn’t

Despite many hardships his family remained positive about life in Canada. Harvey continued to pursue more understandings of his heritage on both sides of his

In the midst of wartime, Harvey’s parents found love, peace and a good life in their small community, with neighbours who accepted them for who they were, their hard work and all that they contributed to their community. In Harvey’s words: “… there’s a community spirit that

Karen Nicloux: Stitching a Healthy Future

2001: Karen Nicloux’s mother, Martha Buyck of Mayo, gifts a pair of moccasins to Prince Charles on the promise he would wear them around the palace, “at least once.”

o talk to her, you wouldn’t think the quiet needleworker Karen Nicloux was once in the upper echelons of our local drug circuit. Her journey from maximum segregation at Whitehorse Correctional Centre to sobriety is an intricate tapestry. Central to it is Nicloux’s signature motif, the butterfly.

“If you think about it, a butterfly starts out as a caterpillar, a ground crawler. That’s what I was when I was on coke. Then there’s the process where the caterpillar is cocooned, which you could consider my time in jail, and now that I’m sober it’s like the cocoon opened for a beautiful butterfly to emerge. “When I was using, the last

thing I wanted to do was sew. I only wanted to get high.” After her arrest and conviction, Nicloux spent days alone in her cell, isolated from the entire population. Shortly after her release, her mother gifted her a piece of melton (stroud) six feet long and six inches wide. It became the base of her recovery belt. “I used sewing to focus.” She learned the skill from her mother, who learned it from her

her childhood in Fort McPherson, where embroidery is more popular than it is here,” says Nicloux.

Embroidery kept her hands busy and calmed her angry nature. “I became excited to see the

finished product.” Nicloux was stitching 14 hours per day and estimates a thousand hours of labour went into the belt. “Embroidery takes twice as long as beading because thread is thin.” Nicloux’s connection between the butterfly and recovery is the essence of her belt. Starting with a central butterfly reminiscent of a sampler Nicloux stitched for her mother, seven distinct butterfly wheels are depicted on a baby blue background of tight embroidery that, in the Old Crow style, completely infills the once-white melton. Where her mothers and sisters took up beading, Nicloux prefers the sharp detail of embroidery. Today she embroiders mitts, slippers, mukluks and does beadwork and assembly. Nicloux’s slippers are recognizable by her use of traditional construction methods that make smooth, hidden seams and small pleats around the tongue. Liners, piping and laces will match the colour of the main flower. Butterflies and other animals will appear from a new angle. Her wolf motif often emerges from the “bushes” of the fur ruff; her ravens squawk, her fireweed drops a few petals across the toes at the base of a stem that grows up the shin to the full flowering bloom. Her colours are vibrant look-at-me neons that pop. She was one of two debut artists chosen to display work at the newly opened Art House Carcross, a permanent visual showcase to promote Yukon art in the Carcross Commons in partnership with Carcross/Tagish First Nation and
