here are many excellent training opportunities available to aspiring Yukon filmmakers of all levels, through several different organizations. The Screen Production Yukon Association (SPYA) is one such organization; this winter, it’s launching a new series of two to six hour workshops, called micro-workshops, offering specialization in select areas of the field.

“A lot of filmmakers in the Yukon... wear multiple hats: they’re recording sound, they’re editing – (they’re doing a bit of) everything,” says SPYA executive director Naomi Mark. “Then there are a lot of people looking to specialize, or get out of that pigeonhole of doing everything, so the workshops cater to both those worlds, allowing people who have no experience in film to get the training they need to be able to do things themselves, and then people at (a higher) level who haven’t had experience in lighting or calibrating to see what those worlds are really about.”

The workshop series has been launched to meet the results of surveys of the association’s members conducted last year; it will cover very specific topics in several different aspects of the filmmaking process.

“We decided to really specialize the workshops, because they are short workshops that are meant to help give people new skills. So it’s simple topics, one topic at a time,” Mark says.

All workshops will take place on evenings and weekends, so that people with day jobs can still attend, and Mark encourages filmmakers of all levels to participate. “(This program) is for someone who’s been playing around with a

They are, from left, Karl Blattmann, Ingo Lou, Lee Carruthers, Nina Reed and Marty O’Brien. camera at home and starting to explore editing software, maybe they want to learn how to colour grade their stuff, or move to the next level to start looking at what it is like to do more professional work,” she says. “At the same time, it’s also for current professionals who are looking to expand their skill-set, or improve it.”

The first workshop took place in late October, and was about lighting. For six hours participates learned about interview lighting, from low-cost field work all the way to professional-level cinema lights. The next workshop takes place Nov. 15; it is a two-hour workshop called “Festival Prep,” which will be taught by Andrew Connors, who is the artistic director of the Yukon Film Society.

“It will be an introduction for what to do when you’re attending your very first festival and trying to get something out of it,” Mark says. “So that one is for more established filmmakers, but at the same time, if anyone is trying to lift a project, a good place to start is a festival where there are tons of media professionals and you can gauge the interest in your project.” Future workshops will take place in the new year, with two already on the roster, though the dates are not set, yet. The next two workshops will be “Post Production” with professional editor David Hamelin and “CAVCO,” which stands for Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office and deals with the tax credit application process, taught by John Bolton.

As long as the demand is there, Mark hopes to continue the workshop program into 2017, along with some other, more large-scale opportunities.

“As always, we will be assessing the needs of the community and our membership to figure out where our interests lie, where people’s skill-set lie, to be able to best serve everyone,” Mark explains. “Right now we’re in the middle of a training research project funded by the Yukon Film and Sound Commission, allowing us to assess the needs of the industry and the territory and see where we can offer a large-scale training program to help people with larger training projects.” The larger training initiatives will contribute to SYPA’s goal of encouraging more scripted production in the territory.

“We do have a very healthy documentary community... but we have seen a lack of scripted films coming to town, and that’s sort of one of the goals in lifting a larger training program, is to help encourage the development of scripted film in the territory because it will help us to create a more sustainable industry,” Mark says. “The industry now is sustainable, but there is so much more potential with the kind of funding that is accessible to the North, we just need to help our filmmakers get to that next level.”

The “Festival Prep” workshops takes place Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Creative Lab, located at 204D Strickland St. To register or for more information on the workshops and other programs offered through SPYA, go to SPYA.ca.

An abroad Yukoner’s homage to mangoes

P

erhaps my Yukon upbringing prevented me from eating mangoes during my formative years. Especially in the grateful, sticky chin kind of way that I eat mangoes now. It’s a graceful gorging of sorts.

There could not be enough of the sweet stone fruit trucked North to satisfy my Mexican mango addiction. I’ve got it bad.

It’s been 10 months since I found myself living in Playa Del Carmen, a popular tourist destination located on the Caribbean coast of eastern Mexico. Playa (as it’s lovingly called by its locals and adopted travelers) is the thirdlargest city in the state of Quintana Roo, and while it has rapidly expanded to accommodate resorts and condominiums, it boasts treasures like renowned reef diving, holistic hotspots and closely located archaeological ruins like Chichén Itzá and Cobá.

Important things I’ve learned thus far: guacamole classifies as breakfast, lunch and dinner; mold grows on everything (including musical instruments, Birkenstocks and computers); bikes and snorkels are must-haves for land and sea exploration and, when in doubt, never eat street meat.

Truthfully, I never foresaw finishing grad school in art therapy and after skipping south for sunshine and oceanside living, but then again, I never saw myself writing an article on mangoes.

Life is full of surprises.

Yes, avert your eyes and ears, mango naysayers, this article is dedicated to the aforementioned adaptable fruit, equally at home in a savoury, spicy concoction or

as a sweet show stealer.

I’m talking about mango habanero, mango ice cream, mango macadamia cupcakes, mango maracuyá jam and mango salsa.

I have discovered the tropical cubed goddess; the mottled parrot that sings; paradise’s succulent and always available sweet.

Whatever colourful market I find myself in, I can always find golden mangoes expertly stacked in pyramid fashion, from Ataulfos

Mango macadamia tarts on display at a vegan café and bakery. to Hadens to Kents to Heidis (depending on the season).

I have filled bicycle baskets, canvas grocery totes and back packs full of fresh, ripe mangoes.

I happily transport them home, singing sunshine-fuelled praise for my favourite fruit. On days when I miss the mountains, I channel my gratitude for this Vitamin D rich lifestyle (yes I am getting enough D, thanks).

For now, ocean, sandy toes and mangoes top my gratitude list.

When I was young and growing up in Whitehorse, I remember when mangoes went on sale. It was a rare sight to see them coming home to our Golden Horn acreage, but when they did, my mom bought them by the boxful. When life gives you mangoes at one of the two largest grocery stores in northern Canada, you buy them by the box and suck, squeeze, chop, juice, cube and freeze.

It’s not hard to stand behind the mango. I am a staunch supporter of the Ataulfo in particular, whose vibrant yellow skin encloses a wonderfully preserved and fibreless meat. This variety holds up well for fruit bowls or cubed on skewers. Many locals traipse the hotel lined stretch of beaches south of touristy Avenida Quinta (Fifth Avenue) carting peeled mangoes on sticks and serving them with hot sauces like habanero or chipotle.

The Kent is a larger variety of mango; more round in appearance, its green colour marbles into a beautiful sunset yellow.

It has a larger stone and is more fibrous than smaller mangoes.

When overripe, it becomes juicy and drunkenly sweet, still perfectly suitable for a smoothie (just add water).

Mangoes in Mexico are at their best and most abundant from March to October, and during this season they can be as cheap as six pesos per kilogram (that’s 42 cents Canadian). It doesn’t take a lot of money to feel filthy rich with mangoes, here. Pesos on the other hand, can be a little harder to accumulate – ask any hard working local here. It is common

for Mexicans to work six- to sevenday work weeks.

I figured this maniacal mango compulsion of mine could run unbridled and untamed for as long as I pleased. Or so I thought until this past week, when I found myself staring at an empty crate at my go-to organic market. The chalk marked sign said, ‘Mango/Heydi $26/kilo’.

It was posted like a marker over an abandoned burial site.

I kicked aside my denial, swallowed my pride and asked the market attendant for a bunch of albahaca (basil), then pointed gravely at the slaughter site, my eyes pleading. No Spanglish was exchanged; his downcast dark eyes confirmed what I already knew to be true. There were indeed no more mangoes.

It’s the beginning of November.

Hurricane season is upon us here on the coastline. I’m sitting in my villa missing all the simple joys of the Yukon fall turning to winter: snowpacks hardening enough to get out the skis; canning enough rhubarb strawberry jam to fill a small bomb shelter and finding merriment in the darkening days (aka cloistering in the Gold Rush with a thirsty crew of Yukon’s finest).

You really can’t take the mountains out of a northern girl, but in the meantime, mangoes (as hard sought as they might be) continue to be my alternative medicine.

Collective Nouns for Birds Near and Far Continuing the discussion of collective nouns

n my last article, we learned that many collective nouns originated in the Late Middle Ages, and were recorded in The Book of Saint Albans. Collective nouns are the words used to describe groups of things. We refer to a flight of stairs without even realizing that this collective noun has origins in the Middle Ages.

In this article we are going to look at geese, eagles and ravens, and the collective nouns for each group.

Canada geese can be found from one end of this great nation to the other. It would not be incorrect to refer to a bunch of geese as a flock. This is a good term for general purposes.

flock of geese, ducks, or the like, in flight.

Skein is also used in reference to clusters of eggs, such as those found in salmon or trout.

A skein of geese would be a random in pattern in the sky - perhaps small clusters. If geese are in flight, and flying in a V formation, you would refer to them as a wedge, probably inspired by the shape.

Another set of useful collective nouns refer to gatherings of eagles. Think about driving down the Haines Highway in November when the eagles have gathered.

You will observe a dozen or more eagles in one tree.

“Look at that aerie of eagles,”

associated with it. A murder of ravens is the collective noun listed in The Book of Saint Albans.

This collective noun is more often associated with crows.

Crows and ravens, although similar in appearance, are very different. According to the questionanswering website, Quora.com, there is a folk tale that crows will gather and decide the capital fate of another crow. This is based on the alleged behaviour of crows killing a crow that is sick or does not belong to the group.

The site states that for many people, the appearance of a raven or crow is an omen of death, maybe because both bird scavenge dead meat.

With geese however, depending on their physical location: land, water, or in flight, there is a corresponding and more precise collective noun.

If you come upon geese on land, you would refer to them as a gaggle. Gaggle, as we learned last time, was also recorded by Juliana Berners in the Book of Saint Albans to describe a group of swans. This is much the same as we would use ‘herd’ for a group of cows or deer. We can also refer to a group of geese on the ground as a herd and a corps.

If the geese are on water, they are a plump.

If in flight, geese are referred to as a skein. The online resource Dictionary.com defines skein as: a

Other collective nouns for ravens include: a conspiracy of ravens, a congress of ravens, and an unkindness of ravens. There is also a storytelling of ravens.

Perhaps the real answer to the mystery of where collective nouns came from is that they reflect a time and place where groupings of animals had colourful and poetic names.

In my next article we will examine the collective nouns for some mammals near and far.

Eagles often like to perch on a snag or other tall tree. Eagle nests are also massive structures built high on the top of a tree. The word for eagle nest, aerie, is the word for a group of eagles.

Convocation is another collective noun for eagles. That is a regal sounding word, worthy of eagles.

Keep the collective nouns in mind this year, and hop over the border to Haines between Nov. 14 to 19 to take part in the American Bald Eagle Festival.

Learning About Ubuntu in Namibia

y African friends think that Yukoners are cannibals.

When I told them the story about the Sourtoe Cocktail I expected the usual reaction: laughter and amusement.

But instead I got wide-open eyes and mouths asking me: “You did this?” they asked me. “You drank this human-cocktail?”

I did my best to explain the history behind this tradition and made clear that people are not swallowing the toe, just the alcohol. But somehow this tradition sounded very strange to them.

I mean, there are some weird customs in Namibia as well. Here people like to eat goat-head

(which is known as “Smiley,” because the goat still has all its teeth on it and looks as if it’s smiling) and worms, which I tried, too.

Namibia was once a German colony and some places look more German than in Germany. But still, this is Africa, with its own values and views on things – often different than in the western world.

One thing I learned was a term called ubuntu. It’s not a tradition, it’s more a way of life. The word ubuntu has its origin in Bantu languages, which is a language-group and contains 500 languages, including Zulu and Swahili.

My friends translated it for me.

They said ubuntu means: “I am

If a stranger comes to a village, he gets hospitality and food and doesn’t need to ask; that’s ubuntu. But that’s only one aspect of it. Ubuntu also stands for community, oneness and caring for each other, my friends explained.

They impressed me with their talk about ubuntu; something we all long for.

Back in Germany, I did some research and asked other Namibian friends about ubuntu and what it means to them.

“We just learned about it in school,” some told me. “It doesn’t come from Namibia, it comes from South Africa and Nelson Mandela made it popular by talking about it.”

Indeed, Nelson Mandela shared ubuntu and his various aspects with the world. But I felt disappointed – I thought everybody is just as fascinated by this term as I am. But maybe this is just some myth that people tell Europeans to make them feel good and share their cigarette with. I thought to myself.

The term ubuntu might come from another corner of Africa, but there is a spirit of sharing in Namibia; people give freely and from their heart.

I experienced the spirit of ubuntu when a strange lady invited me for lunch on a Sunday. It was my second week in Namibia, I was on assignment in Swakop-

mund, a small town by the Atlantic, to report about a music festival. I felt strange in Namibia.

Everything was new and even though Swakopmund is a town with lots of Namibian-Germans living there, I felt like I’d just arrived on another planet.

I met her at a concert and she just invited me to have lunch with her family. After lunch, she gave me a sightseeing tour and we drove into the Namib Desert (which is close to Swakopmund) where we climbed Dune 7, which is a very high and large dune.

It was my first time in the Namib Desert and I will never forget it: the warm sand beneath my bare feet, the wind, the stillness. It was beautiful.

After we descended from Dune 7, my new friend showed me another Namibian custom: Sundowner. In the evening people gather to have a drink and watch the sun go down; which is spectacular in Namibia.

It was a perfect day and because of my new friend, I didn’t feel alien anymore.

Ubuntu may not be the term they are using in Namibia on a daily basis, but it is practice that matters.

So, maybe the Sourtoe Cocktail is kind of ubuntu, too? At least, people share one toe.

instead of performing at the piano as she usually does, will leave the instrument behind. A painter, instead of using the brush, will make magic with an overhead projector.

Geneviève Doyon’s face lights up as she describes the many ways performers at this year’s Onde de Choc show will stretch themselves beyond their usual artistic realms.

Doyon is the artistic director of the third annual Onde de Choc (which means Shock Wave).

The event is produced by the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY). It has replaced the Gala de la francophonie, which included artistic performances and an awards ceremony for Yukon’s francophone community.

Doyon says the aim of Onde de Choc is to present an exclusively artistic show that gives performers of all disciplines a chance to grow.

“There’s a lot of performing opportunities within the French community, but it’s not necessarily places where artists can try new things and take that risk.

Onde de Choc – that’s exactly what it’s for. It’s for artists to not just perform but also create and feel that they have the space to do something completely new.”

This year’s theme translates to “tradition revisited.” It’s a concept Doyon and the show’s musical director, Olivier de Colombel, hope will inspire performers to take new angles on something familiar.

“The tradition can be anything,” she says. “It could be a genre of music, it could be a social archetype they want to deconstruct, it could be a medium, it could even be just a gesture.”

Or, she says, it can be departing from your traditional way of performing.

For example, Monique Romei-

ko, one of 10 artists in the show, is a dancer. But she won’t be dancing in the show.

“She has been experimenting with video so she’s going to be submitting one, which is a completely new way for her to approach her medium – through a dance video.”

Sylvie Painchaud is another example. She normally sings at her piano.

“She is leaving that stability and security and getting up and performing without it.”

And Virginie Hamel, known for her striking acrylic and watercolour paintings, will use an overhead projector to create the show’s backdrop. But it won’t be the solitary work a painter is used to.

“She’s going to be onstage with us creating the projection design almost as a performer,” says Doyon. “So that will be completely different for her.”

Doyon is looking forward to the results. “I’m excited about the diversity. Everything that people have approached me with I was like ‘Wow, really? Ok!’ “I’m excited to see people get out of their comfort zone and how that will translate on stage.”

Onde de Choc takes place Friday, November 18 at the Yukon Arts Centre. Tickets are available through YukonTickets.com.

The Guild presents a new take on a Christmas classic, starting November 23

C

hristmas Eve, 1946. Several actors huddle around their microphones, live-broadcasting a radio station’s seasonal drama, complete with commercial intervals and a touch of Yuletide music.

The story they are dramatizing concerns a well-meaning chap from a small town, struggling to save his deceased father’s savings and loan company from bankruptcy.

His world is collapsing, because the town’s ruthless bank manager is threatening to crush the rival financial institution, thanks to a foolish blunder by the man’s dotty uncle.

Our hero is so distraught, he’s about to hurl himself off a bridge in the belief the world would be better off without him. But an apprentice guardian angel intervenes, as apprentice guardian angels are wont to do.

If that plot seems familiar, it should be no surprise. It’s from one of the best-loved Christmas films ever, Frank Capra’s 1946 classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, starring the unforgettable Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey and Donna Reed as his doting wife, Mary.

Vancouver playwright Peter Church wrote the stage adaption, set in a vintage radio studio, in collaboration with actor/director Sarah Rodgers, who says it had a successful run two years ago at Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre.

Rodgers is currently in Whitehorse, shepherding the Guild Theatre production that begins a three-week run on Wednesday, November 23. It’s her sixth directing stint with the local company.

“It’s such a beautiful piece.

When we did the first read-through here - and I know the play inside out - I was crying at the end, it’s so moving,” she says, before adding that she expects the audience to be surprised and delighted by how physical the show is.”

Part of that physicality comes

from the actors’ ability to move away from their mics, even dance, as they perform the vintage commercial messages that pay the station’s bills. Most of those ads are for either smokes or soap.

“We were able to choose some of our favourite, very funny commercials and jingles. Camel cigarettes is definitely going to be a big hit.”

One challenge Rodgers faced in casting the piece was finding actors capable of pulling off radio play within a stage play.

“I really needed people who were almost voiceover actors,” she says.

“Mary and George are basically just playing Mary and George, but everybody else has a track of five or six different characters. So I was looking for people who had great vocal dexterity, and a capacity for character work.”

Rodgers finds it “delightful” to watch one actor’s rapid transformation from the play’s youngest character, five-year-old Zuzu (with her memorable line about an angel gaining its wings whenever a bell rings), into Bailey’s mother, or an elderly bank client.

She credits the Guild’s new artistic director, Brian Fidler, with attracting many new faces to the Whitehorse acting community. As production manager, recruiting people to audition, he brought in “terrific, strong choices”, she says.

“My George Bailey is a young man named Oshea Jephson, who is tall and handsome in that lovely old-fashioned way. It’s like he’s right out of the period.”

Playing his wife is another newcomer, “a lovely young woman” named Emily Payne. Not to mention Chris MacFarlane, who plays the conniving banker, Mr. Potter, with the distinctive touch of Lionel Barrymore, who assayed the role in Capra’s film.

“He’s absolutely cut from that cloth,” Rodgers says.

Rodgers expects much of the audience’s attention to focus on Vancouver-based musician and actor Joel Stephenson, who was also in the Pacific Theatre production.

Stephenson is the only character whose microphone will actually be live, because he is also operating the play’s Foley (the live sound effects board), as well as moving from piano to xylophone to mandolin.

“He upstages the show, because it’s so fascinating to watch what he’s doing. And there are hundreds of sound cues. He is so busy, he does not stop from the moment the story begins,” Rodgers says.

The fact the adaptation takes place in a radio studio tasks audience members with using their imaginations, she adds.

“What a gift, because they can relive those images from the film, if they want, or they can recreate it. Because they’re going to hear the story,” she says.

The story her actors read for their radio audience, Rodgers claims, is reproduced verbatim from Capra’s movie script based on a 1939 by Philip Van Doren Stern.

If the audience sees Jimmy Stewart preparing to leap off a bridge to his doom, or being guided by the angelic Clarence to see how much George Bailey has contributed to the town of Bedford Falls, that’s exactly the response Rodgers wants.

ugel is a baked pudding or casserole, made with potatoes or noodles. There are many types of kugel both sweet and savoury. Some have raisins or cinnamon, some have onions and cottage cheese.

Think of this version as a Jewish hash brown casserole, it’s

definitely on the savoury side and if you have a few bits of smoked salmon lying around try topping this kugel with it.

Kugel makes a great brunch dish or side, and any leftovers (if you have any) are delicious sliced into slabs and fried until crisp.

2. Grate the peeled potatoes on the large holes of a box grater and add directly to the egg mixture stirring to coat the potatoes between each addition. You’re going to have to work fast to prevent the potatoes from browning. Once all the potatoes have been added pour the flour over the potato mixture and mix until the flour is totally incorporated.

3. Remove pie plate from the oven and add the last remaining tablespoon of oil swirling the pan to coat. Add the potato mixture and smooth the top. Place the kugel in the oven and bake until it is evenly browned, about 90 minutes. Serve with sour cream.

And while there is some opportunity for miners to raise money [by selling table space and by applying for conference-staging grants] on an individual basis, every day of the forum is filled with technical talks.

New to the program is the inclusion of Yukon school children in sessions. Classes will tour the forum to learn about the industry directly from the experts in the field.

“The technical talks are the quickest and easiest way to update my knowledge and learn about new ideas in the industry,” he says. “I get an idea of the latest

The Climate Change Secretariat offers information for people interested in innovations in environmental geology.

Although production is down currently, junior mining companies are receiving more interest on the stock exchange. As a result, “interest in exploration has picked up,” Mann says.

This year’s forum will give a hint at what’s up for next year and give companies time to firm up deals before late winter, when geologists gear up for another season.

ocal geologist Bill Mann remembers when the Yukon Geoscience Forum was a couple of days of technical talks.

Now it’s the premier post-season industry event in the territory, and everyone is invited to take part at the High Country Inn from Nov. 19 to 22.

Saturday, Nov. 19 is the Yukon Chamber of Mines’ Family Day and on Sunday the Forum Trade Show showcases the industry. Monday the Core Shack opens with drilling samples of recent prospects.

Mann, an independent consultant, hasn’t missed the Geoscience Forum since the late ’80s.

“If you live and work in this territory it’s the best way to maintain contacts and find out what’s going on in mining,” he says.

The Geoscience Forum is the premier post-season industry event for anyone in a geoscience-related field. People say it is a great way to meet people, and network.

Over the last 10 years he’s seen much more participation from First Nations and the environmental sectors.

Presenting the keynote address at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning is former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations Phil Fontaine of the Sagkeeng Nation, which is in what is also called Manitoba. First Nations are Canada’s fastest growing demographic and mining’s closest partner.

Fontaine is noted for bringing forward ideas for mutual success.

Fontaine is followed by Ken Coates, Canada Research Chair of Regional Innovation at the Uni-

versity of Saskatchewan. The nationally acclaimed historian and policy researcher was raised in Whitehorse. His latest book, From Treaty Peoples to Treaty Nation: A Roadmap for all Canadians, is a guidebook on building meaningful relations with all industry players.

On Sunday is the Forum Trade Show. Chamber of Mines and Yukon College representatives will be on hand to discuss scholarships for education in mining, reclamation and to sponsor First Nation students to the new Centre for Northern Initiatives in Mining school.

Gimme That Tessitura Jazz singer Steve Maddock returns to Whitehorse with a quintet for Jazz on the Wing this weekend

F

ull disclosure: Steve Maddock and I have a few things in common. We’re both PKs (preacher’s kids) who grew up in southern Ontario adding our piping, angelic treble voices to the choirs in our fathers’ churches.

Point of departure: I struggled through the guy-hood change of voice as a scholarship student of an Ursuline nun, whose ignorance of male puberty helped shred a once-promising voice by not giving it time to rest.

Maddock, on the other hand, was fortunate to find a perfect mentor at the precise time he needed one, in the person of Nikolai Kolesnikov, a Russian emigré and renowned vocal coach on Canada’s west coast.

As a result of our different experiences, I ended up a growly old bass with practically no vocal range to write home about, while Maddock developed into a silkysmooth lyric baritone whose jazz stylings found a lucrative niche on cruise ships, as well as in jazz clubs, concert halls and musical theatre stages.

Last January, when Maddock and I spoke for the first time, the conversation included much technical talk about tessitura (the texture of the human voice and the range within which it falls), as well as passaggio (the point of movement between a singer’s chest register and what is known as head tone).

“A lot of times, male singers make the mistake of thinking the head register is falsetto. There are actually three specific registers in the male voice: the chest register, the head register and

falsetto, which is above the head register,” he explains.

Figuring that out involved more than two years of study with Kolesnikov.

“It me took me that long to understand how to manipulate my anatomy and be able to make the sound and hit the bull’s eye, so to speak, with that head register,” he says.

“What I discovered was that most of my range is chest register.

The head register is only maybe a fourth or a fifth, from upper boundary to lower boundary, but it is such an important part of my range.”

Much of Maddock’s professional life has been dedicated to sharing that knowledge with other aspiring singers, both as a teacher in the jazz faculty of his alma mater, Capilano University, and in the kind of master classes he will conduct this month in Whitehorse.

“It’s a completely different can of worms dealing with female passaggio, the head-voice/chest voice register changes,” he admits.

Jazz Yukon guru Duncan Sinclair apparently has him hopping, as he kept Maddock and fellow Vancouverite Karin Plato hopping last January.

When he flies into Whitehorse this Thursday, he will immediately launch into a series of master classes with Whitehorse singers.

“And apparently there are a lot of singers who wish to do some one-on-one coaching, so that will be nice. I’ll do some private coaching as well. It will be busy, but I like being busy.”

“I’ll also have some repertoire with me, just in case someone’s there who doesn’t have a tune they’re working on. I can give them some options.”

Maddock clearly relishes his role as a guru to both male and female singers, but his performing career is equally important.

“It doesn’t matter how much I continue to develop myself professionally as a vocal instructor, when it comes right down to it, all we really have to offer as teachers is what we have experienced through our own work as performers.”

In addition to his role as a teacher, Maddock is coming to Whitehorse next week primarily as a singer. He will be onstage at the Yukon Arts Centre on Sunday, November 20, as part of this year’s Jazz on the Wing concert series.

The prospect of his second trip to the Yukon capital clearly pleases him.

Ken Bolton is former co-editor of What’s Up Yukon who now telecommutes to work from his home southeast of Whitehorse.

“I was literally shocked to get up to Whitehorse and experience how much music there is in that town,” he says.

“Looking at the listings of where to find music on a day-today basis, or evening to evening, there are more places to play there than in Vancouver,” Maddock is also proud of his own pending contribution to Yukon’s jazz scene.

“I’m really excited about bringing up the band that played on my CD (Memory Café), which we recorded in 2009,” he says.

“We’re going to be doing quite a few of the tunes, and the arrangements that were on the album, so it won’t be too difficult at all for them to pick it up, because they’re the ones who played it on the recording.”

His quintet that night will include Miles Black on piano and Bill Coon on guitar, as well as upright bass player Jody Proznick and drummer Craig Scott.

The cabaret-style performance starts at 7:30 p.m.

n internet search will show that the hottest baby gifts of 2016 include a light-up singing turtle, organic cotton mittens and an infant sized pair of UGGs. But the hottest gift for Dawson City babies is a handmade quilt. It’s been the most popular gift since 1980.

A square from Freya’s quilt That’s the year the tradition started. It can be traced to a group of friends, one of them expectant. The friends decided to give her a collectively-made quilt. Since, the group, in various re-incarnated versions, has collectively made more than 20 quilts for friends, family, and even some to be auctioned off as a fundraisers for the Dawson City Music Festival.

Quilts vary in size and designfrom a small wall hanging size, to a full queen size bed quilt. There may be 10 squares, there may be 20, but they will all be original and heartfelt. Most quilts have a theme. Some of these have been, flora and fauna of the Yukon, historic Dawson buildings, or a couple’s favorite activities.

I was unaware of the longevity and breadth of the Dawson quilt tradition when I first laid eyes on a Dawson baby quilt at a friend’s shower, but the love and community was evident even without the historical context. The tradition, which began, as one veteran quilter put it, in a baby boom much like the one currently underway in Dawson, has since ex-

panded to include wedding quilts, retirement quilts, and farewell quilts for those leaving Dawson.

Where do these quilts come from? One, or a few ringleaders, usually close friends of the recipient, come up with a theme, and a list of people who may want to participate. Interested participants declare their square, and then get to work. There are no prerequisites to participate in a quilt, and there is a learning curve for most participants, and a range of skills among contributors.

Teamwork, and reaching out to experienced quilters and sewers is an important part of the experience. As Amélie Morin described her first quilt square experience, “I had no idea what I was doing, and no experience... I partnered with a friend, we talked to people in town about what to do and how to do it. My partner was crafty so she spearheaded it.”

Amélie also sought out the help of a local craft group, which she remembers as incredibly helpful. People there drop their own projects and run over to help you, and answer your questions. “[Working on a quilt] is also a fun way to interact with our community, I never would of had a reason to go to craft night, or to meet any of the people there.”

As of the original Dawson quilters, who worked on her first group quilt in 1980, Brenda Grant was able to see their skills improve as a group. “Our earlier efforts were much more rudimentary, but because we were in a baby boom, much as you guys currently are in Dawson, many of us participated in many quilts, and our skills and confidence evolved, so many of the later babies received some pretty nice handiwork.”

at the Dawson City Museum. Regardless of whether the quilts are exhibited, Brenda is quick to add that all quilts are cherished, because they were made by friends.

Quilt organizers work hard to make sure that those closest to the recipient have the opportunity to make a square, which means involving people from both near and far. Many Dawson expats are still part of the group, which means squares traveling back-and-forth by mail to distant place.

Richard’s Tire Tips Storing your out of season tires properly

IS VERY IMPORTANT! Improperly stored tires may become unusable due to ride disturbances caused by flat spots in the tread, for this reason tires should never be stored sitting on the tread for any extended period! Another improper storage technique would be to hang the tires by the beads, which can cause bead damage rendering the tire unusable.

The best practice when storing your out of season tires would be to keep them in a cool dry enclosed storage area that is not exposed to the elements (e.g. water, ozone etc.). They should be laid down on the sidewall of the tire and stacked either on top of one another or on a flat surface that won’t cause any indentations.

parts of the larger quilts, usually with 20 squares, was the communal input when trying to determine how to lay them out and which ones looked best next to others.

We would usually have about a dozen different incarnations and then would try to remember, collectively, which way the majority of us preferred. Talk about collaboration in action! And yet we always managed to do it amicably, with lots of laughter!”

Receiving a quilt is “overwhelming.”

So say three different women who have been gifted baby quilts,

and whether they received the quilt in 1981, or 2014.

“It was made by all of these amazing women I love so much [...] I can see it every day, and [my son and I] look at the squares and talk about the people who made it,” says Amélie Morin.

Rian Lougheed-Smith is a canoe commuting, wool wearing, dog loving, printmaking artist and writer who lives in the bushes outside of Dawson City, Yukon.

She can be found somewhere in the woods with her one-yearold on her back.

Hot Tips for Making Your Own Group Quilt: • Creating package for quilt participants including a detailed instructions and a pre-cut square with clearly marked seam allowances can make things easier for first timers, and make final assembly easier.

• Use only pre-washed and washable fabric, especially if the quilt is one for everyday use. Many quilters also choose to use cotton, and avoid scratchy or embellished fabrics, in the interest of protecting that new baby skin.

• Take advantage of the internet to illustrate directions and for inspiration! Youtube has many tutorials on every step of quilting, including how to use fusible interfacing (magic quilting stuff included in many of the packages for quilts I’ve participated in) and various embroidery stitches.

• Don’t take on assembly and finishing by yourself! As Dawson quilt veteran Brenda Grant put it, “it’s always nice to have someone else to run things by, or to help pin and hold all the fabric while sewing, etc.”

What was I thinking? I know it’s the Yukon, but we still had beautiful summer weather and I was looking for a wool winter coat.

I had to laugh at myself, maybe

years ago.

Braiding rugs is a craft that was developed in North America.

When factory workers took their knowledge of making braided straw bonnets and translated it to making straw mats, it didn’t take long before rugs made from fabric came into being.

The fabric lasts longer than straw, and is warmer on the feet as well. Wool is a choice fabric because it’s long-wearing, but any fabric can be braided into a rug. The wool I use is generally recycled from winter coats, wool blankets and even some heavy

Once I get home with my treasures of coats and blankets, I start to rip them up. Sounds de-

them together end to end. I then fold in the long edges of the wool and iron it to keep it folded. Then, making a “T” with the wool, I start to braid. When I reach the point where I will make my first turn in the rug I braid two “twice overs” and then continue braiding until I am either out of material or I have decided the rug is finished.
