How Two Pierres had an Adventure in the Yukon S

teve Pitt came to the Yukon in 1982 to attend his sister’s wedding. She was marrying Dal Fry, son of Art and Margie Fry. That’s part of how Art ended up as a character in Steve’s book, The Wail of the Wendigo.

The book is a young adult adventure novel that brings two kids named Pierre into contact with Fry, famed bush pilot Wop May, a mad trapper or two, survivors of the Franklin expedition and a Hӓn family escaping the clutches of residential school.

This book is subtitled “An Early Adventure of Pierre Trudeau”, and is number five in a series called Leaders and Legacies, in which a succession of our prime ministers have been involved in youthful mysteries.

The series was created, and has been mostly written, by Roderick Benns. So far these have featured John Diefenbaker, John.

A. Macdonald, Paul Martin and Richard Bennett.

When Benns was ready to insert Trudeau into this scheme (what with Trudeau Junior’s ascendency) he contacted Pitt, who was known to have an interest in history and a northern connection, having done some mining with the Frys, as well as a bit of farming (herding geese, he says) nearer to Whitehorse.

With that in mind, Pitt decided to cobble up a fictional teenaged meeting between Pierre Trudeau and Pierre Berton, set in the 1930s, around the time that the Mad Trapper of Rat River was active.

That this did not happen in real life is made clear in the Fiction or Fact section at the end of the book, something that is an essential element of each of these books. While part of the aim of the series is to make elements of Canadian history more exciting, the creators feel it is important not to emulate the Americans and make up biographies out of whole cloth.

“Canadians do a really terrible job of telling history,” says Pitt.

“They make it very dry and academic. Look at the Americans and the British. They popularize a lot of their characters, their historical figures. It may be that most of what they know about George Washington or Abraham Lincoln is fiction, but at least they know who they are.

“I’m old enough to remember

The Wail of the Wendigo is a novel in a series meant to make Canadian history more interesting the Trudeau years, and I’d been to the Yukon so I could use that as background for the novel. Then, I’m sort of a history geek, so I’ve worked in all kinds of historical facts and figures.”

The two Pierres are not really great at coping in the bush once their fathers take them out gold hunting, so Pitt has a Métis teenage girl take them under her wing and help them along. Her parents have her out in the bush to escape being carted off to school.

The story is good reading and filled with all sorts of Yukon history as well as some mystical First Nations material that helps to solve the problems created by the existence of the two Wendigos.

John Franklin’s expeditions were two humans transformed to near immortality and beast-like characteristics as a result of the cannibalism which we know to have been a part of both of his northern expeditions.

It’s clear that Pitt had a great time writing this book, and he managed to create something that has appeal for adults as well as his target audience.

Dan Davidson retired from 32 years of teaching in rural Yukon schools, but continues writing about life in Dawson City.

Labour Day Slo Pitch Classic Tournament takes place Sept. 2 to 5 in Dawson

“P

lay ball!”

These words will be ringing out in Dawson City this Labour Day weekend.

From Sept. 2 to 5, teams from the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska will converge on two ball diamonds to compete in the Labour Day Slo-Pitch Classic Tournament.

This annual, mixed tournament has been a 30-year tradition in Dawson, says Dawn Kisoun, president of the Dawson Slo-Pitch Association, and organizer of the tournament.

“Lots of people enjoy beer and a good ball game.”

Kisoun is no stranger to baseball. Since the age of 12 she has practically lived on a ball field while growing up in Inuvik, as well as later on in Whitehorse and then Dawson City.

“Baseball is life,” she says.

“The rest is details.”

The tournament is funded by a grant from the City of Dawson, along with sponsorship by Whitehorse Beverages. The action will be split up throughout the weekend between two locations: Minto Park in town, and Crocus Bluff, which is just outside of the city centre. The umpire in charge will make up the play schedules before the tournament starts, deciding who plays whom and where.

Each team has 10 fielders; because it’s a mixed competition, five of the players must be women. Four games will be played from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Minto Park. The round robin takes place all day Saturday at Crocus

There will also be a concession at both locations where fans can buy snacks and beverages.

There is a $300 entry fee, with a limit of up to 18 teams. Prizes range from $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Most valuable player shirts for both male and female are given out, as well as shirts for the champions.

Kisoun points out that a Canadian team hasn’t won in 20 years. Two years ago, however, a team came close, placing third.

This standing does not discourage local teams from entering the tournament. Danny Dowhal, a ball player for the West Dawson Blues, says his team is excited at the prospect of signing up for the tournament again this year.

The West Dawson Blues play one to two games per week against other local teams in the Dawson Slo Pitch Mixed League. The season runs from May to September.

All season, says Dowhal, the team keeps the goal of the tournament in mind as they strive hard to play their best and hone their skills.

Normally, the winner of the Dawson league get to enter the tournament for free. As the final game is being held after Labour Day this year and the winner will therefore be unknown during the

classic tournament, Dowhal’s team will pay the entry fee in order to participate.

“The Dawson League is competitive, with a mix of skills and levels,” he says. “It’s recreational and fun. Playing against some really good teams during the tournament will force us to play to the max of our abilities. We’re looking forward to that challenge.”

Registration for the Labour Day Slo Pitch Classic Tournament closed on Aug. 21.

I

recently discovered a great trick for keeping strawberries fresher for longer: wash them in a one part vinegar to 10-parts water solution, then leave them out to dry before storing them in the fridge. There’s no vinegar aftertaste, and your strawberries will last way longer!

I figured this trick would work equally well on raspberries. I had spent a day out in the sun climbing around those spiky bushes picking berries, and decided jam making and canning could be postponed until the next day. I washed the berries and laid them out on a towel to dry. I went to bed quite pleased with my clever trick and advance prep work done.

I awoke to discover nearly a quarter of my harvest had sprouted a white fluffy mould overnight.

It was like it snowed in the summer. I stared in disappointment at the mess before sadly picking the bad berries out from the still good ones. I stewed over the blood, sweat, and tears that went into picking these, only to have this happen.

And to add insult to injury, every cookbook I consulted after specifically pointed out the fragile nature of raspberries, and how they should not be washed until ready to use.

next time, I’ll freeze them if I’m not ready to can right away.

Raspberry Jam Makes five 250 ml jars INGREDIENTS 2½ pounds raspberries 1 package (57g) pectin powder 1 Tbsp lemon juice 3½ cups granulated sugar METHOD • Clean the raspberries by rinsing them under cold water and drain. Sanitize the jars by boiling them in a large pot. Set aside.

• Place raspberries in a medium pot with the lemon juice and pectin powder. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly to smush the berries. Add the sugar, mixing well, and bring to a boil again for a full minute. Remove from heat, and if there is excess foam, skim it off with a spoon and dispose.

• Ladle the jam into the jars, being sure to wipe the rims clean and leaving a ¼ inch space from the top before applying the lids. Fully submerge the jars in boiling water for 15 minutes, then remove and allow to cool to room temperature.

Raspberry Cocoa Jam: • Mix in ¼ cup pure cocoa powder at the same time as the lemon juice and pectin powder. Be sure to use cocoa powder that does not contain any milk solids, as milk products should only be canned using a pressure canner and not a boiling water bath.

Raspberry Jalapeño Jam: • Mix in 1-2 finely diced jalapeño peppers (depending how spicy you like it) at the same time as the lemon juice and pectin powder.

Raspberry Lemon Jam: • Substitute the juice from one whole lemon instead of the tablespoon of lemon juice. Remove and discard the pulp from the lemon, and slice the peel into very thin strips, about an inch long. Add to jam mixture.

Yukon Birth Stories with Christina Kaiser

Birth of a Family: Christine’s story

“I

would have loved to have had midwifery care and a home birth for all my pregnancies, but that wasn’t possible,” says Christine, a Whitehorse resident.

When she was pregnant with her first baby and two months away from her due date she noticed some back pain that turned into premature labour. She was flown by medevac to Kelowna where her water broke the next day and she gave birth to her daughter Isabelle after a short labour.

It was a frightening experience and at first she was in denial that it was happening, but when it was clear that she was giving birth she tried to focus on the excitement of meeting her baby instead of the fear.

The birth went really well and even though Isabelle was two months early she weighed a healthy four pounds and seven and-a-half ounces. She breathed and cried right away and both Christine and her husband Roger were able to hold and greet her.

The heartbreak came when Isabelle was put in the intensive care unit and had to stay in hospital for six weeks with limited time for her parents to hold her and take care of her.

“It was a really hard time,” Christine says. “My baby had to spend her first Christmas in the hospital and I cried a lot. When we finally got home, I carried her on me for two months and wouldn’t put her down!”

One-and-a-half years later the next baby was on its way. Ten

This time the doctors in Vancouver discharged her right away because it was a false alarm. She was not allowed to return to Whitehorse, however, and had to stay in Vancouver for what ended up to be an expensive six weeks.

The whole family stayed at the Ronald McDonald house and were grateful that this was available to them. Baby Colton came three-and-a-half weeks early at BC Women’s Hospital after a short labour.

Midwifery is regulated and funded in BC, and Christine had a midwife to support her during this birth, which she really enjoyed.

Colton, who weighed seven pounds, nine ounces and nursed right away, did so well that they got discharged the next day and the family flew right home to the Yukon.

When Christine was pregnant with baby number three she was determined. “I told the doctors from the start that I am not going to fly anywhere unless this baby is really on its way! I worked really hard to be my own advocate and

stay in Whitehorse this time.”

After two premature babies, planning a homebirth for her third child was not an option. Christine chose to give birth in the hospital, but this meant she could not have a midwife provide her primary care. In the Yukon, midwives can provide mothers with primary care for births at home, but not in the hospitals. This is because we are one of the last jurisdictions in Canada that doesn’t have regulations or health care funding for midwifery.

Christine is an active member of CMAY (Community Midwifery

Association of Yukon) an association that has been promoting the implementation of midwifery regulations in the Yukon.

Christine hired Kathleen Cranfield, a local midwife, to act as her doula and felt very supported by her throughout her pregnancy and birth. Baby Kip was born one beautiful Yukon night with dusky sky and midnight sun – after a few false alarms and finally another short labour.

The whole family was able to be together and Christine had a great birth in Whitehorse at last.

“I just love having children,” Christine says. “Giving birth is the most empowering and rewarding experience I have ever had.”

But this is only the beginning.

Three children are about to grow up in our beautiful Yukon.

“There is nothing more earthy and organic than being present at a birth, and when it is your own, the imprint left upon you is relived over and over again. Having children makes one cherish the little things in life – like having tea parties and playing with sticks and mud. Reliving the excitement of childhood through my children is so special!”

Do you have a tire pressure monitoring system equipped on your vehicle?

If you notice a light on your dash that includes the letters T.P.M.S. or a small tire icon, your vehicle may be equipped with this safety system. As of September 2007 the D.O.T. requires every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured for sale in the U.S. with a G.V.W.R. of 10,000 lbs or less must include a system to detect any tire with less than 25% of the placard pressure and warn the driver of a low tire pressure on the instrument panel.

There are several different meanings to these indicators and deciphering which condition the system is indicating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you notice any of these warnings on your instrument panel, you should refer to your owner’s manual or stop in and have us identify which conditions the vehicle may be experiencing.

Not for Novices: Beyond Beginner Picking

fter you’ve picked your first few batches of mushrooms, and haven’t landed in the hospital, you’ll find the mushroom conversation branches into themes of field testing, drying, and alternate uses, such as medicines, dyes and crafts.

The best mushrooming advice I ever got was from experienced mushroom picker Esa Ekdahl. She told me to start by harvesting only one type of mushroom that I could positively identify. Over twenty plus years of picking I’ve added species to the mix as my confidence and familiarity grew.

I use the popular field guide All the Rain Promises… And More by David Arora. It opens with sound advice, such as caution against mixing wild mushrooms with red wine; cook your harvest because wild mushroom are really hard on the stomach; and don’t bother with skimpy specimens.

There’s plenty of local knowledge on Facebook, like the group Yukon Shroomers. Members of the group are ready to help each other identify new finds and uses. They tend to keep quiet about favourite mushroom patches, but that’s to protect them from overpicking.

To pluck or cut? This debate rages through the mushroom picking world. Europeans told me to cut mushrooms so they can regrow. First Nation friends ask, “So we’ve been doing it wrong for thousands of years?”

Mushrooms have long taproots and a natural break point just below the surface of the soil.

Since I usually forget my knife, I dig down to get a firm grip low on the stem and wiggle the mushroom free, like a loose tooth.

In general, fatally poisonous mushrooms aren’t found in the Yukon, but there are plenty that will make a person sick. In the event of stomachache or vomiting after eating wild mushrooms go to the hospital or call 9-1-1. Don’t wait for it to get worse.

100 feet from my house: The Prince, which is a choice agaricus with the tell-tale chocolate brown gills; an orange Lactarius that I use for salted mushroom caps; and a coral mushroom. I couldn’t identify the specimens on the left to my satisfaction so I rejected them.

My personal edibility test starts with a sniff under the cap. Does it smell like something I’d like to eat? If so, I wet my lips, break off a small piece and wipe it on my mouth. If my lip goes numb or feels like it was just frozen at the dentist, I toss it. Lastly, I chew a small piece, taste it, spit it out – and wait. Is there a bitter flavour?

Peppery? Antiseptic? If it tastes pleasant, I take it home for visual comparison with my mushroom books.

Mushrooms can be wormy, but careful trimming gets rid of most.

If I fry the mushrooms to eat immediately, residual worms will shrivel up and die. During ovendrying, the worms become dust.

After picking and trimming, I dunk each piece – fast – in a bath of a capful of lemon juice mixed with a cup or two of water. It helps kill worms, keep the colour, and results in a more appealing reconstituted product. Then I dry them.

Out of respect, I give thanks when picking. After all, I don’t plant and cultivate this stuff, Mother Nature does. And I stick to my private property or known public open undeveloped space.

If I want access to my neighbour’s horse field, or another nation’s traditional territory, I’ll ask. Also, I don’t pick in parks – national, territorial or municipal – especially if I plan on selling my surplus.

Did I say sell mushrooms? Ask around and there’s interest. Local restaurants, such as Café Balzam, buy quantities of mushrooms and other country foods.

Mushrooms in the Yukon

M

ushroom season starts in spring. On a hike at the end of May, I came upon some black morels. In the Yukon, morels usually only grow where there has been a recent fire, although I’ve found them growing other places.

With the warm weather and rain this year, I have been picking mushrooms in earnest since the beginning of July.

My family and I eat all of the

mushrooms shown here. I cook them for a few minutes in a little butter and wild chives (Allium schoenoprasum, which grows wild along lakes and does quite well transplanted as a perennial in the garden). Then, I add salt and pepper. Yummy!

When I gather more than I can eat, I brush, or lightly wash, the raw mushrooms clean, cut them up, put them in a plastic bag and in the freezer they go.

This is commonly known as the meadow mushroom. Spore print dark. The colour of the gills range from pink to chocolate brown.

Once you know this one by heart it is easy to identify. It’s a very popular mushroom.

This is the famous, delicious, shaggy mane, which is easily identifiable because there is no other one like it. Especially for this one, make sure you pick no more than you can process, as this mushroom can become inky and unusable within an hour of picking. They often grow in grassy areas.

LACTARIUS DELICIOSUS This one is commonly known as the orange-latex milky mushroom. It has bright orange gills and bright cream spore print. A wonderful tasty mushroom.

CLAVARIADELPHUS The first one’s common name is pestle-shaped coral. These mushrooms are tiny tiny, and yellow.

If I am out gathering, I will throw some of these in the basket. And another related mushroom, the flat-topped coral, is orange and a little bigger; it could make a meal on it’s own, but I mostly eat these in a wild mushroom medley.

PLEUROTUS POPULINUS This one’s common name is aspen oyster. Its spore print is white. This mushroom grows on poplar trees. In mushroom lingo, it is choice!

by Nicole Bauberger I wrote this in 2013 for Dave Mossop at Yukon College as part of my course requirements for NOST 201, A natural history of the North. However, it had been rattling around in my head for some time. Please do not use this to identify a mushroom; get expert advice.

I

’m going to tell you the story of my very personal relationship with a mushroom.

I had met Lactarius deliciosus a few times at a friend’s place. Julie Frisch was, at that time, a natural history interpreter in the Tombstone Territorial Park, spending summers in an old cabin a short ways up the Dempster Highway.

Julie calls this mushroom “orange delicious”. It’s also known as a saffron milk cap or red pine mushroom. I had happily dined on eggs, rice and mushrooms as her guest. But at that time, that mushroom was more her friend than mine.

One September, when Julie had returned to Hillcrest from her cabin, the mushrooms were so plentiful she

just couldn’t keep them to herself.

So we went out walking with serrated knives and paper bags lining our cloth ones. She introduced me to the mushrooms and where to find them.

Different people learn in different ways, but I think learning an edible mushroom from another person is the best way to do it. I’m not the kind of person who by nature reads manuals or field guides. Besides, lists in a book don’t necessarily correspond readily to local knowledge.

Knowing from Julie that this was the only mushroom in the area that exudes orange sap when it’s cut is knowledge not only of this mushroom, but of the other mushrooms behind my house.

Walking with her in the mushroom’s natural habitat, seeing which ones she finds and which ones look similar but aren’t quite right, yields a more certain way of knowing. Besides, Julie is in herself evidence of the authority of her knowledge; she has eaten these mushrooms avidly for years and she is still alive.

When I see this mushroom, I recog-

nize it as a whole, as a friend, instead of listing its traits. I listen for it, and imagine that it calls out to me. I feel that it’s my mushroom.

I cook with this mushroom differently than Julie does. Julie dries them and adds them to rice, but that treatment changes the flavour into something different than the mushroom I love.

I fry them in butter, and the orange sap emerges and blends with the butter in a rich orange sauce-like liquid. Often I add a small amount of soy sauce, whose salt draws the sap out further. Even cooked they have a crunch to them among all this richness.

I’ve discovered the mushroom is wonderful on pizza and a complete waste of time battered and deep fried. If I’m feeling really fancy, I add whipping cream and make a cream reduction, into which I nestle chicken thighs cooked with just salt and pepper so the top skin is crispy. I did mention that my relationship with this mushroom is a kind of love affair, right?

But it’s only physical for maybe six weeks per year.

One fall I was trying to control myself, thinking I should leave the mushrooms alone for a couple of days, let them recover after a rain, give them some space. But then I came upon one growing right in the middle of the path, where someone was just going to step on it anyway. It’s easy to dream that this is a kind of dialogue.

So I threw my aloofness to the wind and just enjoyed the too-brief moment of its fruiting.

This does not mean I forget my mushroom when the paths are full of snow. All winter I walk there, dreaming of the mushroom’s mycelium under the snow. The vegetative part of a mushroom, the mycelium, can be enormous, with vast regions of white threads sewn through the leaf mould, like neurons in a wide-spread brain.

I wonder if my mushroom dreams in the winter. I know I dream of it.

A Market for the Whole Community

W

hitehorse chef and cookbook author (and What’s Up Yukon columnist) Miche Genest has a wonderful description of the Fireweed Community Market: she calls it “community glue.”

Providing access to fresh local food is just one role the market plays. According to Genest, it is where people go to connect with friends and the greater community and bond over food.

The last chance to hang out at the market this year is on Thursday, Sept. 15. Then we’ll have to wait until next spring, which will be the 13th year of the market.

The farmers’ market serves as a weekly hub, where people gather to chat, meet farmers and other vendors, and buy local products.

The Fireweed Community Market runs Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the summer months.

(The last Saturday market was Aug. 20.)

On a recent day, market goers could buy fresh basil and broccoli from Elemental Farms, chat up an MLA, buy earrings made of caribou antlers or have their kids identify the pelts on the fur board of the Yukon Conservation Society. There’s no hurry or rush here. Neighbours greet one another, friends linger over a plate of hot Indian food or grab a bag of kettle corn and stroll the market grounds.

Jan Stick, MLA for Riverdale North, says she loves coming to the market. “There are so many friends and constituents here. It’s a fun way to work with people.”

The Yukon NDP set up its own tent at the market four years ago, where people can raise pressing issues with an MLA or spend time catching up.

The market also lets farmers educate the public, creating a connection between consumers and their food. Barbara Drury of Circle D Ranch sells organic tomatoes and meats. At her stand, Drury describes the painstaking care that goes into growing her tomatoes. Circle D Ranch is located

Tomatoes grown by the Circle D Ranch. It takes a lot of love and attention to grow tomatoes in the Yukon in the Ibex Valley, which gets colder than Whitehorse. To ward away frost in the month of May, she puts on a fire in the fields at 10 p.m. every night. At 2 a.m. she wakes up to re-stoke the fire. Then at 6 am, she goes to the greenhouse to check on the temperature and if necessary, stoke the fire.

One loyal customer claims that Drury’s tomatoes are the reason she comes to the market.

The scene is a far cry from the early 2000s, when the market was a group of vendors running out of Takhini Gas Station.

Darren Holcombe, a board

member of the Fireweed Market Society, remembers those days: there were no buildings or shelter to protect the vendors from strong winds. It now has up to 55 vendors, comprised of farmers, artisans and information booths.

The emphasis is on providing local fare.

“It is not a farmer’s market, it is a community market,” insists Holcombe.

The market has served as a starting point for a number of vendors who have then gone on to sell their products in local businesses.

“Blackbird Bakery started off as a wagon at Fireweed,” Holcombe says. Now Blackbird Bakery is a destination bakery at Waterfront Station for foodies in town.

He is particularly proud of Simone Rudge, one of the original market society board members, who has joined forces with Robert Ryan to establish Farmer Robert’s, a grocery store that sells Yukongrown produce, supplemented with food sourced from British Columbia, then the United States and Mexico as our own growing season wanes.

Rudge, who has stepped down

from the board, expands on the market’s local philosophy by striving to support local producers who have products to sell year-round.

Holcombe says there are no plans to change the Fireweed Community Market in the near future, but simply keep what works.

Holcombe likes that people can buy things at the market that they didn’t expect to see or find.

“I’m happy when I see customers leaving the market with a carrot top sticking out of their bag.”

t the downtown community garden in Whitehorse, a beekeeper tends to the newly built beehive in the fading evening light. Nearby, a gardener waters his small plot of potatoes, beans, and lettuce – a zucchini plant takes up a quarter of his raised bed box. Vegetables grow in plots on the other side of the garden. They’ll go to the food bank.

The community garden and the new apiary are examples of the sorts of projects and initiatives that the city could see more of with Whitehorse’s Local Food and Urban Agriculture Strategy.

City administrators began working on the strategy after community consultations in 2015 around its Economic Development Strategy pointed to the need for more robust urban agriculture for its economic security.

“The more we can replace imported food, the better – obviously – that is for the local economy,” said Jordan Stackhouse, the city’s economic development coordinator.

The benefits of a local food strategy span many areas of economic interest, from increased

employment to keeping spending within the community.

One of the areas that the strategy will explore is the ways in which local food production could be made easier.

A barrier for community members is the lack of rules and regulations in place, according to Stackhouse and Larissa Lychenko, the planning intern who is working on the strategy as part of her graduate studies. Without regulations in place for urban agriculture programs, whenever a new initiative is suggested ad hoc, it can turn into a “difficult, bureaucratic process”, she says, that progresses slowly.

In creating the strategy, and throughout the consultations, the city plans to look at “zoning bylaws and regulations and how those may hinder the development of local agriculture,” Lychenko says.

The strategy may also impact city planning and bylaws to create an environment that supports and encourages urban agriculture.

This could take the form of setting up future neighbourhoods to have the space and resources for community gardens and animal

control bylaws that affect “what sort of animals people can have and the numbers,” according to Lychenko. By that, she means things like people raising chickens or bees in their backyards.

While regulations make it easier for producers to farm, grow, and sell, Stackhouse says the community also needs to embrace local food. “Ideally it would be a change in culture for people in Whitehorse, and that’s really what we are striving for.”

He referenced the 100-mile diet as a culture and a lifestyle that successfully had people start thinking about local food first.

Through education and leadership, Stackhouse says that Whitehorse could achieve a similar shift.

“All the ingredients for something successful already exists because the people are already there,” Stackhouse says. “I think with local food there is a real passionate community of local food producers that want to get to that, if you call it like a next level or want to do that as their source of income or their job or whatever and the city has a well-defined cont’d on page 19...

The Whitehorse Local Food Strategy comes on the heels of the Local Food Strategy for Yukon, which was released earlier this year. Yukon Government’s food strategy was the result of two years of consultation with the public and industry stakeholders and is focused on developing the agriculture sector and increasing access to local food. The city’s strategy has a narrower scope and is focused on what the city can do to support local food production.

of our strategy is a focus on cityspecific things such as our zoning bylaw, Official Community Plan and things like our environmental and community grants,” said Stackhouse. “While those broader goals such as researching cold climate food production are important, that will not be a part of the city’s mandate as a result of this strategy.”

The strategy will look at both ends of the spectrum – from career farmers to those growing food in their backyards. Under the advisement of Rod McCrae, Canada’s leading food planning expert, a draft strategy will be

developed by spring of 2017, and will be available for review by the public. After the review is completed, the plan will be finalized and implementation will begin in summer of 2017.
