eeds of Change invites locals and visitors to consider the implications of the concept of reconciliation.

It’s the summer exhibit in the Gathering Room in the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre in Dawson City.

It displays information about the history that has led to a need for this reflection, and it shows some of the steps that have been taken over the last 20 years that have led to the realization for the need to reconcile.

One might consider the process to have begun with the K’änächá (taking care of ourselves) group’s scrapbook project back in 1998. Residential school survivors opened up to each other and the world about their experiences.

The original scrapbook is on display again this summer as part of the larger exhibit.

K’änächá led to the publication, in 2009, of the coffee table-sized book, Tr’ëhuhch’in Näwtr’udäh’a (Finding Our Way Home), which is available at the gift shop.

There is much more to be seen in this summer’s display, and some of that began with the unveiling of a memorial plaque beside the river near the centre on Aboriginal Day. Its text sketches the history of residential schools, honours the survivors and suggests a direction for the future.

“We invite you,” it says, “to reflect on the historic relationship with the First Peoples on this land, and imagine a new relationship built on mutual understanding, honesty and respect.”

Inside the centre there are displays explaining the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and a copy of the formal apology from the Canadian Government.

Other displays show the range

only her story, but her cleverly conceived Red Tape Dress, the fringes of which are labeled with both positive and negative text relating to the issues at hand. This part of the exhibit has been requested by the Yukon Aboriginal Curatorial Collective to be part of an exhibit from Sept. 28 to 30 at Yukon College.

One wall display contains the words of residential school survivors and their reflections on the meaning of reconciliation. Inside a small wall tent one can sit and listen to interviews with some of these elders, while a second video display in one corner of the room runs a residential school documentary.

Bo Yeung’s Community Braid Project invites visitors to record their reactions on a set of scrolls which will eventually be braided together, combining strands of resurgence, revitalization and acknowledgement.

A rack in one corner is hung with memorials to various parts of the reconciliation process: church apologies, media coverage, commemoration, missing children and burial information, settlement agreements and 16 other items.

Perhaps the concept is made clearer when one considers the range of meaning in synonyms for the word, which are listed at the beginning of the exhibit: reuniting, reunion, bringing together again, conciliation, reconcilement, rapprochement, fence mending.

An artistic reflection on the history of residential schools. of reading and curriculum material that has been created over the last two decades, and highlight such educational initiatives as the Tr’inke Zho Daycare Centre, the Head Start Program and the increase in First Nations programming at the Robert Service School.

Han language instruction now goes up to grade six, while grade 10 social studies has a residential schools component. There is a great deal of shared programming at the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, as well as elder visits to the classrooms, use of the school’s outdoor classroom and support for such programs as First Hunt and First Fish.

arlan Pruden and Marney Paradis are PhD program at UBC. Pruden gave a talk to a group of peers – including Marney – after class once.

As Pruden describe it, upon hearing the presentation, Paradis’s mind was blown.

Two-Spirit People, Then and Now: Sex, Gender and Sexuality in Historical and Contemporary Native America is the name of the talk.

In this age, a two-spirit is an aboriginal who identifies as a lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, trans, or any identity beyond male and female.

But two-spirit isn’t a gender identity, “it’s an organizing strategy,” says Pruden—being two-spirit gives First Nations a specific role, which varies from nation to nation.

“People think they have to choose between being gay or Indian,” says Pruden.

But they don’t have to choose: “Here’s this word that links you right back to your people.”

Pruden is Cree . He was born in Mayo, Yukon. When he was five his house burned down and he moved with his mother to her people’s territory, Beaver Lake, in northeast Alberta.

Before colonization there were more than two genders within Cree society. A person’s gender defined their role. Men hunted, women gathered, two-spirits flitted between the two groups and provided balance and harmony.

They were matchmakers and marriage counsellors. They were

That’s some of what is known about the two-spirit role within the Cree nation. Pruden collects information from different nations by reading ethnographic accounts, and confirming his findings as much as he can with those who speak a nation’s original language.

His findings make up a database which currently contains 130 different terms for two-spirit. Some of the terms translate to: “halfman, half-woman”, “those who don’t fight”, “those who follow the moon”, or “peacekeepers”.

Two-spirit didn’t seem to be related to gay, lesbian, or bi-sexual.

“It’s more about roles within society that other genders can’t offer, and it becomes a nation-specific definition,” says Pruden.

Pruden has found that contact with Europeans, colonization and the imposition of a European worldview through residential schools and religion pushed First Nation practices underground.

“Ceremonies were illegal. It was illegal to hold sweats, to practice religion,” says Pruden.

A European worldview was

imposed upon First Nations, and this included binary gender definitions. In his database work, Pruden is calling forth old knowledge to “mindfully and gently work traditional knowledge” back to people’s understanding of themselves as a culture.

The intent is to return medicine and gifts back to two-spirits, so they can have a role within their communities.

Back to Marney Paradis, whose mind Pruden blew with his talk in Vancouver. Along with being a PhD candidate, she is the director of the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre in Whitehorse. She said the talk was mindblowing because she had never heard about historical context of two-spirit people, or the roles they played culturally.

She invited Pruden to Whitehorse to give the talk.

Why? For “the rapid demise of heteronormativity and imperialist attitudes surrounding gender binaries, if we’re lucky,” is how she responded, via email.

She went on to say that on a smaller scale, she hopes the talk will strike a chord with some twospirit youth in the audience, “who walk away with a sense of peace and the understanding that they are not alone in this journey.”

Pruden will give his talk on Tuesday, August 30 at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre from 6 to 8 pm.

People have told him they thought that in going to the talk, they’d be getting “gay training.

After the talk, they realize what they were getting was Indian training.”

Everyone is welcome, he says.

The conversation enables all First Nations, and non, to realize that there are multiple ways to see the world.

ackie Yaklin is a true knitter.

If you see her How’sBUSINESS at the dentist office, she likely has knitting needles in her hands conjuring up something warm for someone.

“It is like an obsession and I seem to be really obsessed with starting projects,” she admits. “I have four projects going on right now.”

Yaklin likes knitting so much, she literally quit her day job to start up a knitting store.

It is called The MatchGirl Knitting Shop and it can be found at the far end of Tungsten Road at Titanium Way. It’s past Mae Bachur Animal Shelter, past Titanium Storage, at the end of the road close to the Yukon River.

The location makes it a destination store; only serious shoppers will make the effort to get there.

Patrons are rewarded with a bright and rustic environment with a table in the centre that begs you to sit with Yaklin and knit.

“We have a knitting group and meet here Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m.,” she says. “It is open to the public for a drop-in.”

She once attended a thank-you party, held by the recent Syrian refugees, and she invited them to come and share their techniques.

“They may not speak English well,” says Yaklin. “But they don’t need to speak; they can show us their patterns and we can show them ours.”

Looking around the room, you first see a wall of yarn in many, many colours.

“I usually go for the ‘Crayola’ colours,” she says. “Crayola had eight colours for 200 years, but each of these companies have their own shade.”

And each of her suppliers have their own processes and materials, too, that adds to the variety that numbers in the thousands available to her.

“That one comes from Iceland,” Yaklin points to a top row, just within reach. “And that one comes from Prince Edward Island where they have their own mill.

“These come from Nebraska where they own their own sheep; these are from Virginia and they

Jackie Yaklin loves knitting so much, she opened her own store. The MatchGirl Knitting Shop is open until 7 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays for late shopping and for basics and children’s classes have a mill and they don’t over process the wool and they sell it for a reasonable price.”

But which ones are truly special to her?

“Well, this one up here is mink blended with silk, from their own mink ranch, and then they spin the fibres,” says Yaklin.

“I had a pair of gloves in this, and someone bought them; and then I had a hat and gloves set, and someone bought them.”

But then she holds out a ball of yarn in a most reverent way: “This is muskox from up north.

“It’s the Inuit’s sustainable harvest; they send frozen pelts to PEI where they are kept in a freezer until I place an order and they spin it for me.”

Then, there are the needles.

“The original ones were made from sticks of willow or whatever you have,” she explains.

“During the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, Canada was big in manufacturing knitting needles from aluminum.

“They are developing new ones all of the time and make them from steel and nickel, too.

“These are made from birch,” she says, pulling a pair from her knitting bag. “I like birch because they are lighter and easier on the hands.

“These, over here, are made from bamboo... so we are using panda food, I guess,” she says

with a laugh.

“In the old days, my mom didn’t have any of this stuff; she just had needles and wool.

“Reading a pattern was a special kind of torture for her.

“She taught me to knit; probably her mom taught her to knit; and her mom taught her.”

Aside from raw goods, there are finished product to buy. The selection changes all the time.

Yaklin opened the store last November, with lots of support from family and friends, and she loves the location.

“It is quiet by the river,” she says. “This winter, we had some foxes in the yard.

“I had never heard a fox cry before.”

She says it is too busy downtown for her, and she doesn’t want to compete with Itsy-Bitsy Yarn Store: “I know them, I like them.”

The MatchGirl Knitting Shop is open Monday to Friday, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. She hopes the later hours make it easier for those leaving work and for her basics and children’s classes.

Back to school? Not for Me

’ve done both: public school and homeschooling.

The first six years of my education I attended public school. At the ends of summers I had the classic back-to-school change of routine. It meant getting out of bed earlier, breakfast, get ready and out the door with you.

I’m going to be honest: I didn’t like the change of routine at the end of summer, and I wasn’t a big fan of school.

I loved learning, but at school I never was challenged how I needed to be. There weren’t opportunities to grow my fullest potential.

That is why I waved goodbye to the public school at the end of the sixth grade and entered the world of homeschooling together with my four siblings.

I remember the countless hours my mom spent reading and researching to prepare school work for her kids, grades one to seven.

We were actually excited to go back to school, for once. The day finally came. We were so proud of our new books and pretty teacher that we actually looked forward to the end of summer.

What I didn’t know is this would be my last time where I would have a “official” start of a new school term. From then on, us kids wouldn’t leave our books untouched for long on those school breaks. We loved studying and we were, and still are, all very curious. Who cared about a school

each other, as well.

When I was 13-years-old I decided I wanted to be a pastor. My interest in religion courses became stronger. I wanted to share this passion with my siblings and asked my mom if I could take over the teaching for this subject.

After my own studies I would prepare the class for the next day, reading books and researching.

Taking an active role in mine and my siblings’ education was meaningful to me.

Our mom challenged us. This let us grow and develop into the people we are today. Learning is a constant process of life, and to have my mom as a main part of that is special to me.

Last year I graduated and my mom did the last thing that there was for her to do: hand me my certificate. Graduation wasn’t my achievement; we had reached it together.

I am now a young woman, a part of the working world -- I am a travel agent.

As the summer comes to an end, I reflect on my first day as a homeschooler, which for me marked the day of a wonderful beginning of a new chapter.

Thank you, Mom, for all your love and patience – now as much as then.

Summer Lessons in Hippo Munching

Learning how to be a good sport is tough when you’re four

W

enough nostalgic embers burning to be excited as we put the game together.

When all was set up, I explained the rules to Emily; that winning is achieved by gobbling more marbles than your opponent. She told me she understood.

Before we knew it we were thrust into a furious round of hippomunching smorgasbord. As soon as the marbles were devoured, we tallied up our score. “Check it out,” I said, “I’ve got three more marbles than you, I win!”

Emily’s mouth began to quiver as if her lips were emotional gates trying to stay closed. Bursting into tears she cried out, “I was suppos-

hat a happy day it was when my four-year-old daughter Emily opened a gift from my wife and I revealing a classic game from our youth.

Hungry Hungry Hippos was one of our “go to” games in the mid-80s.

I remember battling it out with friends and family, frantically trying to scarf down all the marbles to assure a full-bellied hippo victory. I we played for what, to my seven-year-old brain, seemed like hours at a time.

Even though this newer version of Hungry Hungry Hippos looked cheaper and was way less sturdy than the original we played 30-years-ago, I still had

It occurred to me right then and there that I had never really taught Emily the idea of someone winning and losing, or the challenge of besting someone in competition. In her mind we play the game, she wins, easy peasy.

I calmed her down, wiped the tears from her eyes and began a daddy-daughter talk about another lesson in life that she needs to learn to function in this world of ours.

I simply told her “Emily, if you win at everything, then there can be no challenge for you to strive for. You can’t grow and learn from others. If you lose a game or a challenge, you just get back on that horse and try again. It helps you persevere, which means you become stronger from the experience. Daddy wasn’t trying to be mean. He just wants to challenge you and have fun. When you lose, you tell the other person good game and then we play again. Maybe you win and maybe you lose, you won’t know until the end, and that’s okay.”

It seems ridiculous, but one of the strange things I never considered when I became a father is that you are really starting from scratch when raising your child.

All the little concepts you take for granted like sharing, personal space, and winning and losing have to basically be installed through experience and time. One of the joys of parenthood is to be able be the one to make them understand and grow – even without any memory of learning the

lessons yourself.

Emily ended up telling me she understood and that we had a “good game”. We played more Hungry Hungry Hippos, she won some and I won some.

It was a great moment to be Dad. A few days later Emily ran up to me all smile and energy and said, “would you play Candyland with me?”

I said “Of course, dear.”

Emily then stiffened up and got

a little serious, looked me straight in the eye and said “But this time I win, okay”?

I smiled and thought to myself, back to the drawing board, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but I am Dad and I will persevere.

always forget the way this works, how fast things change here. In the hot, hot days of summer, I think it will last forever and then suddenly, one rainy July day, there it is. The chill, maybe a wool sweater, the thought of lighting a fire crosses your mind, and you notice the first blush on the cranberries and rosehips.

Things change quickly here in the Yukon.

It is a time of intense harvest, of bounty, basketfuls of berries, canning, an overwhelming wave of kale and cabbage spilling from the garden. I am already anticipating a sauerkraut overload, that we will have more peas than we know what to do with, a delightful surplus of cranberries.

But along with the old familiars, we will also be harvesting something new this winter: our own chickens.

We brought our first real “farm” animals on to our property this summer: seven mature laying hens and then, a few weeks later, 50 day-old, heritage breed chicks.

It has been a steep learning curve.

On the hens’ second day at our house there was a harrier perched on their coop. An hour later one of the hens had escaped our pen, our husky had caught her and in the handful of seconds it took me to reach her, the hen was dead.

We eat meat. We harvested a moose in the muskeg near our home last year. I have killed and eaten grouse. We want to raise our own food, and believe it is important our daughter knows where her food comes from. But, standing there with a dead hen, the same hen my daughter had just been stroking the hour before, I found myself at a loss for words. I found myself wondering if I really have what it takes to do this homesteading thing.

How do you explain to a toddler that something can, so very quickly, go from alive to dead? On the May afternoon when the hens arrived, I had thought I would have until fall to figure out how I to explain slaughtering a chicken to our daughter, or at least become more comfortable with the actuality of it myself.

A few weeks later we learned another hard lesson. We had overestimated the security of

Lessons on life and death were an unexpected side effect of raising chickens our greenhouse, where we were brooding our chicks, and underestimated our dog’s interest in them. In a matter of minutes 13 chicks were dead.

A costly mistake. And a wholly disappointing one.

We blamed ourselves, we blamed our ambition. Called ourselves foolish for building infrastructure as we go, for not having the electric fenced chicken tractor ready before the chicks arrived.

We blamed ourselves for not better training our dogs, for not being constantly vigilant, and on and on... The feeling of being responsible for all the living things (the toddler, the garden, the chickens, the dogs – even though they’re eating the chickens...) is an unreasonable and unsustainable feeling.

Talking to a good friend who has, over the past 10 years, become a successful goat farmer, she shared that while she remembers the first chicken she lost to a dog, she has since lost so many to predators that she has just ac-

cepted the place of the chicken as “snack food” of the animal kingdom. Pragmatic for sure, but difficult to accept and expect the experiences that brought her to that point.

I guess this is just the next chapter for us in our homesteading challenges, foolhardy and idealistic as they may be. We’ve lost crops before, had plants killed by frost, eaten by mice, swarmed with aphids. I guess we just find it easier to emotionally distance ourselves from those losses.

I also now realize that while an element of distance and acceptance is necessary to cope with the inevitable losses of livestock we face, that the whole reason we are doing this is to stay close to these realities. We don’t want the cellophane wrapped, butter injected Christmas bird. We’ve chosen to be close to the source of our food, and that means getting our hands dirty.

So what do you tell a toddler when she looks to you for explanation? The truth: One day it’s summer, the next it’s fall. Our dogs

are hunters, and eat meat like us.

One minute your beautiful new red hen is healthy and whole and making you eggs, the next she’s in a roasting pan. We do our best and are thankful for her either way.

We are learning, and I do not have all the answers.

We live in a place of extremes, where the changing nature of the world around us is a bit more blatant than the more moderate climes of the world. When it is light it is LIGHT. When it is cold it is COLD. And in between? Well, here we are, holding on to the best of what is just behind us while holding out for the best of what’s to come, and rolling with our crazy seasons. We find ourselves wondering just what it is we are doing and trying our best to explain it to ourselves, so that we can explain it to those looking to us for explanations.

The Frantic Follies is Family to Former Dancers

T

he Frantic Follies Vaudeville Revue is the longest running independent theatre company in North America. Or, at least, that’s Grant Simpson’s speculation. He’s also got an application in to the Guinness World Records to affirm that the it’s the longest running vaudeville show.

In the world.

Simpson is into longevity.

The Whitehorse show is, among other things, slap-stick humour, can can dancers, ragtime piano, singing, banjos, leading ladies, skits about cabin fever, and reanactments of The Cremation of Sam McGee. Simpson is the show’s producer, director and half-owner. Lyle Murdoch is the other half-owner.

In two years it will be the 50th season of the follies. Simpson’s hoping that is the year he’ll pass up his role to his kids, and he’ll “be the old guy who entertains.”

The idea of connectivity and legacy is one of the reasons Simpson’s excited to have four former can can dancers back on the stage on August 26 for Yukoners’ Night.

“The Follies has a family feel,” says Simpson. The younger, current dancers don’t know the past cast. “It’s really nice to do this, and pull it together.”

Allyn Walton grew up in Whitehorse. She started working at the door for the Follies in 2005. She joined the cast in 2007, and returned every summer until 2011.

This summer she’s been filling in for Nicole Murdoch, who broke

The dancers say it feels like they never left her toe. It’s been like coming home, she says. “These people and this show are family, no matter when you did the show, we are all family.”

Walton is also one of the four former can can dancers making an appearance for Yukoners’ Night.

The Follies stage is in the Westmark Hotel. It’s performed nightly through the summer, and its main audience is made up of visitors. Usually Americans on a tour package. The Follies is one place they hit. But there are Yukoners who’ve seen the show more than once. Since it doesn’t change much, Simpson likes to add twists on Yukoners’ Night as a way to show the community appreciation for its support.

ber. It’s “like a special occassion” when he’s on stage,” says Simpson.

Past Yukoners’ Night have performers like Dale Cooper and Graham Hartwich, who Simpson says are legacies of the Follies.

This year is the first time former can can dancers have returned. Michelle Fisher is another one of them. “We’re going to take over the stage as much as possible,” she says.

Fisher joined the cast in 2005.

Talking over the phone from Calgary, she says when she was hired, “I didn’t know I was can can dancing. I just knew I was getting paid to dance.”

Her last year with the Follies was in 2006. She spent four years with the Gaslight Follies in Dawson City. Now, she’s in Calgary

because she’s doing an intensive; she’s training to get her certificate for ballet studies, so she can teach it in Whitehorse.

She’s started a family there.

Fisher says Becky Reynolds was the third person she met upon moving to the Yukon, so long ago.

Reynolds, originally from Alberta, was a can can dancer from 2000 to 2006. Being back on stage to practice for the upcoming show is pretty nostalgic. “It’s like visiting your old house,” she says. “They were my family.”

The combination of being a cast member with the Follies and living in the Whitehorse, “opened me right up. It made me who I am. I’m so excited to go back and feel the lights on my skin.”

Hiring Reynolds was one of Simpson’s best moves, he says.

“She just lights up the stage with her personality, and she lights up the cast environment.”

He says each of the four dancers returning for Yukoners’ Night bring a personality to the stage.

“It’s nice to have them back.”

Dancing with the Frantic Follies was Nikki Swerhun’s first job, from 2000 to 2002, and then for a season in 2005. At 15, she was the youngest, but the cast “swept me under their wings and became my second family. It was very tightknit and I loved it,” she says.

It’s been 11 years, and she was nervous to return. But, “it turns out it’s like riding a bike. Everything came rushing back.”

Fisher noticed that, too: “It hasn’t changed much in 10 years.

But I’m completely different.”

Along with taking over the stage as much as possible, the can can dancers will perform a new routine they’ve been practicing, that was choreographed by Reynolds.

Yukoners’ Night will include more guest appearances, but Simpson didn’t want to spill the beans on the surprises. He’s really excited, though.

So is Fisher -- “everyone has to come see it,” she says. “It’s going to be quite the show.”

Yukoners’ Night is on Friday, August 26 at the Westmark Hotel.

It starts at 8:30 pm. Tickets are available before the show.

Locally made cheeses are one of the five categories for Mount Lorne’s Ingestible Festival taking place Aug. 28

is the season where giant vegetables are being harvested from gardens and potentially prize-winning jams are being churned out for display in the hopes of gaining a ribbon.

This was the case at Dawson City’s horticultural exhibition as part of Discovery Days last week, but you won’t find large or entertaining vegetables adorning the tables at Mount Lorne’s Ingestible Festival, coming up on Sunday, August 28th.

Instead, this festival is a medley of food and art that celebrates what people do with their locally-grown and harvested produce, with added points for presentation.

If you have ever come across lead organiser Shiela Alexandrovich, then this will come as no surprise: she is well known for her long-standing engagement with the organic food sector as a producer, educator and advocate, in addition to her fine beadwork, funky fibre-art and whimsical willow.

“It’s about encouraging people to share what they grow,” Alexandrovich says, “and to give us a chance to celebrate each other.”

Having been one of the servers at the last two festivals I can attest to the enthusiasm within the community. The place positively hummed as each of us behind a table sliced, scooped or poured samples while maintaining a con-

stant narration describing the processes leading to each entry.

Entries will be placed into the categories of Breads, Cheeses, Ferments or Wild-crafted and for anything else there is the catch-all called Flights of Fancy. Local sourdoughs tend to grace the bready table, and homemade cheeses from local milk the dairy. Some entries, like local sheep’s yogurt, fit into more than one category: is it a cheese or a ferment? Wild cranberry relish, rosehip jelly and wild mushroom pie are all things that might be found at the Wildcrafted display. Anything goes in Flights of Fancy - in the first year an elegant ice castle of colored layers of herbal teas melted away next to a glowing golden cantaloupe.

Logistically, entries need to be dropped off between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the day of the event and are then displayed in a gallery format about the main hall of the community centre.

From 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. viewing ensues along with talks at each table before the by-now ravenous onlookers are allowed to begin tasting and testing the gorgeous creations. They are given stickers with their $10 tasting ticket with which to vote for their favourites by taste, presentation and ‘local’ity. This last is awarded for entries that make the most of lo-

cal ingredients, or capture Yukon terroir to the highest degree. The prizes, awarded at 6:45 p.m., carry on with the themes of food and art.

While the festival is homegrown, participation is not restricted to Mount Lorners. Everyone is invited to participate.

“The competition is in good fun – we’re not real serious about it,” Alexandrovich says with a laugh.

I remember encouraging a newbie-fermenter last year who was feeling hesitant about entering. At the end of the day she waltzed out with first prize for her kombucha (a non-alcoholic fermented drink), student taking over from mentor in the court of public opinion. I can’t wait to see what she brings in this year!

While last-minute entries will be accepted, pre-registration is helpful for the organizers.

ally in the gut when we eat foods rich in non-digestible carbohydrates, particularly inulin. Inulin can be found in chicory root, beets, leeks, asparagus, bananas, onions and garlic.

The concentrated inulin-propionate ester supplement allowed for targeted delivery of a beneficial amount of propionate directly to the large intestine.

The amount of propionate delivered in the gut from the supplement was 2.5 times the usual daily production.

To receive the same boost in production from fibre alone, around 60 grams of fibre from inulin-rich foods - whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables - would need to be consumed.

While this isn’t impossible, it is a significant increase from where many of us are with our daily intake. Currently, the daily recommended intake is close to 40 grams but most of us eat closer to 14 grams.

While the research is in its early stages, it will be an interesting ingredient to watch as more studies are conducted. For those who can’t beat the sweet tooth or the need for chips, there may be hope in the near future.

In the meantime, while increasing fibre may not have the full effects of the supplement, it is never a bad idea to start eating more.

Halfway Up Lotus Flower Tower, where we decided to end our adventure

by Alexander Weber This is part four of a four part series, chronicling Alex and Mandy’s attempted ascents at the Cirque of the Unclimbables. We left the pair as they were halfway up an intimidating spire-like peak called Lotus Flower Tower.

They had just reached the first natural break in the climb. It was 4:00 pm. They were facing “1100 feet of vertical to over-hanging granite” above them. How does their adventure end? Now, finally, you will find out.

Our Achilles tendons were on fire. We were facing physical and mental fatigue. And with the thought of climbing through the night, rappelling 2,500 feet, then hiking back, packing up, and immediately hiking down the steep forest trail to Glacier Lake, we decided that it was time to quit.

We called it right then and there.

We relaxed on the ledge for half an hour, soaking in the view and our accomplishment, totally high on life and this incredibly special place. We rappelled down and headed back to camp that night, feeling jubilant and empty -- simultaneously. The next day brought more rain, which made cont’d on page 15..

our descent to Glacier Lake just as painful as the hike up had been on day one. Nothing about this place is easy.

In the end, this trip was one of the most intense, demanding, but completely rewarding experiences of my life. Too often I have set challenges for myself, only to accomplish them several months to a year later. But this trip was special because I went in with a lot of confidence and self-assuredness but was denied success at every turn.

And yet I’m delighted with this prospect. Not only because I’m not blind to the beauty and uniqueness of the experiences we had, regardless of success or failure, but also because it is truly through failure that we learn what we are made of and what we can do.

This trip has humbled me and provided insight into how incredibly demanding and difficult a challenge like this is, and it has planted a seed of motivation that I haven’t felt for a long, long time. I will return to the Cirque one day and will accomplish my goal. But before then I have a lot more alpine experience to gain.

What’s Up Tinder with Amelia Merhar

Introducing the Intricacies of Tinder in the Yukon A melia, 31. University of Alaska Fairbanks. Yukon College. Grad student, artist and musician. Happy to be back up North after a year at school!

That, my friends, is my Tinder profile.

Tinder is one of of numerous dating apps, where you swipe left or right photos of people on your phone, a pass or like, and if two people like each other, they match and can chat. You can like up to 100 people a day in your area on Tinder with a free profile. It’s the only video game I play these days.

The same company that runs Tinder owns OkCupid.com, which is my personal favourite in big cities, and Match.com – actually 45 dating sites and apps in all.

There are lots of new online dating apps coming out all the time including Bumble, where women must message first within 24 hours. And yes, there are men on Bumble in the Yukon, I checked.

Sadly, PlentyofFish.com still dominates our frozen pond with their poor web design and Myspace-era overload of features and notifications. You’re a kinderhearted woman than me if you can see past all the frequent spelling errors and ballcap-sunglassesfishing pictures (what do you look like, man?!).

You want to create the right atmosphere with your Tinder profile I’ll be writing about online dating in the Yukon in this most crucial of dating seasons, the end of sum-

mer. I’ll be focusing on the uses and abuses of Tinder for the most part.

Dating can be tough up here.

You feel like you know everybody, but you don’t. And how to find

out if that new cutie is single in a non-awkward way? At least, with online dating, you know they are single and looking.

One of the things that is different about Tinder-ing in the north is that you’ll have 100+ Facebook friends in common with a match – Tinder accesses your Facebook photos, friends and ‘likes’ to build a profile. So, it’s pretty easy to ask a close friend for some more deets.

I’ve decided to call this the Tinder crowdshare. Not actually sharing with a crowd. But when you go on a date here, people immediately ask, with who?

Dating is almost a public activity in a small town. The best quote I’ve gleaned so far from a Tinder crowdshare is, “Oh man he’s single!? I’ve been trying to hit that since I was 17!”

What higher recommendation could one give, really?

Next week I’ll share the surprising story of what happens when you invite all your local matches to the same barbecue.

This is the second year that Northern Vision Development has challenged Whitehorse restaurants to make the best burger.

This year six restaurants took the bait -The Gold Pan Saloon, the High Country Inn, The Cut Off, Earls, the Steele Street Restaurant and Lounge (which is the Westmark) and the Klondike Rib and Salmon.

Six writers each tried a burger, and rated them according to their own standards.

The Yukon Burger Challenge runs til the end of August. Vote for your favourite. Each restaurant has a ballot box and forms.

Those who cast a ballot are entered in a draw to win a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant they voted for.

The restaurant that wins the challenge gets a plaque. And eternal fame.

ince we have relatively few options for going out to eat in this town, I was looking forward to checking out the new restaurant at the Carcross cut off with the fitting name of, “The Cut Off.” The restaurant’s location isn’t ideal for those who live right in Whitehorse, but since we live five minutes down the road it’s a great option.

The restaurant is located in an old highway truck stop, and the owners have maintained a The Cut Off Restaurant’s Alaska truck stop vibe with the décor and menu. It’s upscale, home-cooked, truck stop food. burger is tasty, but the judge has order-remorse. He wishes At $18 the Alaskan Hamburger is priced to set gourmet expectations. It’s $2 extra for bacon, he went for the shoestrings $1 extra for cheese and $3 extra for onion rings. fries instead of the onion rings I easily rang up a $24 plus tax and tip bill, without a drink. This seems steep, but on the other hand the portions are very large. My companion and I split one burger and neither of us left hungry.

The atmosphere at the Cut Off is similar to Burnt Toast Café in downtown Whitehorse, which makes sense as it’s run by the same folks. It boasts lots of reclaimed old wood and tasteful truck stop-chic décor. It was a little dark for my liking, with small tinted windows. It’s a tough space to work with, but the owners have done a good job.

My fiancée decided on the beer battered onion rings instead of fries, which in retrospect was a mistake. There was way too much batter for my liking, though this might be exactly what some are looking for. Nevertheless, I wished we’d ordered the yummy looking shoestring french fries that were being enjoyed at neighbouring tables.

The burger itself comes on a nice, fresh ciabatta bun and it’s served with bourbon barbecue sauce, lettuce, tomato, garlic mayo and crispy onions. It’s certainly very tasty, and at this price I wouldn’t expect anything less.

Location and décor play a big role, but the most important thing for a restaurant is how good the food is, so all in all The Cut Off’s Alaskan Hamburger has earned itself a gold star in my book.

They’ve run with the small fries and hung with the home fries; we’re talking 20, 30 years of burgers going back to when The Earls burger was going it was practically illegal to use mayonnaise. for gold. Nobody needs a burger jumping off the menu acting like a meat head before it even hits the table.

Initial presentation lacked showmanship: where were the parsley and pickles that we’re used to seeing on a plate? The white space won’t cost them, but the wrinkled bun might.

Earls set a good foundation with fresh ingredients. A solid two slices of red tomato, firm lettuce (not iceberg), two wedges of avocado and a double strip of bacon. Wow! We haven’t seen bacon like that since the brunch challenge of ‘06.

Where these two burgers really strutted their stuff was in the fresh meat. No pre-fab meat pucks; these guys had an actual ground beef patty and a piece of grilled chicken. Unbelievable!

So this duo laid a good footing, but did they bring down the house? They came close, but the banana peppers cracked their facade. Let’s talk about this particular program element. Not everyone agrees that style is going to make or break a burger, but in this case, putting “banana” on the same menu item as “beef” might have been an error.

Ultimately, it was those peppers - yes tangy, yes spicy, but nonetheless, they brought the crash. And it was spectacular! Not five minutes into the routine, the bottom bun was melting in pickled pepper juice, the top was soggy with thousand island.

Good old knife and fork had to pick up the pieces.

Let me tell it like I see it, these guys have the chops to make a great burger and they gave it 110 per cent on taste, but ultimately, style and ambition kept them from gold.

They wanted it all, but no burger can stand up to the richness of bacon, cheese and avocado at once. All that and banana peppers too! What a night! Unforgettable!

Executive chef Brian Smith and executive sous chef David Verney are famous for their Lead Dog barbecue sauce. It is a loving combination of Yukon Brewing’s Lead Dog ale, smoked ketchup and molasses.

And, for the meat, they take a smoked brisket, marinate it, and mix it with chorizo sausage. No fillers like bread, egg or anything...

Well, there is some seasoning from the rub, but that’s it.

It’s a tantalizing mixture of sweet and spicy.

Then there are the mushrooms, sauteed with Forty Creek Rye. See? Every ingredient is there in all of its own excellence.

Next, all Chefs Smith and Verney had to do was put the meat and mushrooms between a bun.

But they didn’t. Nope. They took it up a notch and added onion rings.

And cheese and salty bacon.

The burger is named Too Big For Your Britches.

A burger has to live up to its name.

So they added another eight-ounce patty of meat.

They didn’t stop there.

Oh, the humanity!

They added a grilled cheese sandwich in the middle.

It was bigger than my mouth! It was bigger than my head!

Our server, poor Emily, winced with the effort to heft it onto to table.

Mothers hugged their children close lest the beast fall over.

Construction workers, done for the day, avoided eye contact with me so that I would not challenge them to order one.

I realized I needed to remove the sourdough grilled cheese sandwich from the middle. I needed to chew out some relief bites from the bun to get at the meat of the burger. These preparations complete, I was finally able to rest my entire mouth into the orchestra of flavour that was the scent and juice of perfection.

The natural-ness of the ingredients were unfettered with process, allowing each taste to take its turn, delighting my senses.

It’s named Too Big For Your Britches; thankfully, what it was actually too big for was my stomach.

I couldn’t finish.

his is a guy’s burger, the kind where you crush a beer the Rudolph Burger with can on your forehead afterwards and go, “Yeah, I ate that.”

Katie Thom, the kitchen manager of Klondike Rib & Salmon, laughs and agrees, “It’s a rowdy burger.”

The Rudolph burger is Klondike Rib & Salmon’s entry in Burger Challenge Week: a patty of reindeer meat, cheese curds smoked on the premises, deep-fried onion bits called tinsel onions and two slices of deep-fried pickles. Sriracha-lime mayo is slathered in two separate layers, which lets you taste the mayo’s kick with each bite. A soft brioche bun encases the whole thing.

The burger arrives at the table five inches in height. Any taller and you’d need an escalator.

Katie and her staff wanted a burger that was different. They did their research, checking out the burgers of competing restaurants in the Burger Challenge Week. In the end, they chose reindeer meat, (also known as caribou), because wild game is abundant in the Yukon.

“Klondike Rib & Salmon is known for smoking its foods, so they chose to smoke the cheese topping. The onions provide crunchiness, the pickles a sour edge. The Rudolph burger gets a creative thumbs-up.

Katie thinks it’s funny that I call it guy food: the burger was created in a joint effort by three women on staff.

The restaurant has had positive reviews. “People think it’s great,” says Katie.

The household I grew up in had three brothers and a grandmother who loved to watch wrestling. I could picture any of them – including Grandma – chowing down on the Rudolph burger, wondering when they could come back and order it again.

I find the Rudolph burger very tasty – the meat is moist and firm and the smoked curds are particularly yummy – but I can’t finish it. Midway through, I order a salad with balsamic dressing on the side to balance out all the heaviness.

My parents owned a restaurant and I know what they would say if they saw me: “Lightweight at table Eight.”

t breaks from tradition, it’s packed full of flavour and - like the sports car it’s named after - its price tag sets expectations high.

It took Olympian-effort The Mediterranean Lamborghini is the Steele Street Restaurant and Lounge’s to finish the Steele entry in this year’s burger challenge.

Street’s Mediterranean Lamborghini burger The Lamborghini is not your traditional burger. It is an eight ounce lamb patty infused with mediterranean spices and feta. Now, being the son of a Greek man, who grew up on a mostly Mediterranean diet, I’m all for lamb and feta.

The more the better.

If you’re more of the classic beef, bacon and cheddar burger connoisseur you’re in for a surprise – a very delicious surprise.

I respect the Steele Street kitchen staff for thinking outside the box. It would be easy to go with a classic burger, especially being a restaurant that sees a lot of American tourists.

I like that on a culinary stage, like the Yukon Burger Challenge, the Steele Street took an unordinary route. They’re skating to hip hop, not classical.

Big points here for that risky choice.

Let’s talk presentation. The Lambo isn’t a massive burger. It is not small, but it isn’t anything John Candy would struggle to get down. Your friends don’t need to gather around and cheer on each bite.

If you eat burgers you can get this down.

For me that’s a big plus. I can eat it and not feel immediately bloated. There’s no beads of sweat, no shortness of breath, no dozing between bites.

That said, when it costs $27.95, you want lots of burger. You almost do want to be comatose when you’re done eating it. But, in the case of my dinner companions, it was the bill that did just that.

The Lamborghini is messy and full of wardrobe malfunctions. The roasted red pepper and goat cheese aioli oozes from the burger. That, combined with lettuce, tomato and cucumber, is too much for the poor little kaiser bun. The result is a sloppy, but delicious, mess. I caution the bearded and first-daters against taking on the Lambo.

In the end, there is no denying the flavour of The Lamborghini. You won’t be disappointed with the taste. Just remember to stock up on napkins and bring your wallet.

he song “One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer,” written by Rudy Toombs and recorded by Amos Milburn in 1953, is about indulging in the moment and damning the consequences. Now, the brain-trust at the Gold Pan Saloon on Main Street have channelled the spirit of that song into the Milburn-Toombs Burger – their entry You can’t wimp out while eating this burger. into the second annual Yukon Burger Challenge, running until August Go all the way 31.

The centerpiece of their creation is a Scotch egg, which is boiled and wrapped in both pork belly and breaded bacon. This patty is glazed with bourbon barbeque sauce and laid on a bed of onions and mushrooms braised in Yukon Brewing’s Bonanza Brown beer.

Get it? One Scotch, one bourbon, one beer.

Fixings include lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and jalapeño jack cheese. The kitchen staff serves the Milburn-Toombs with a steak knife protruding vertically from the top – a sassy touch.

The sandwich is 11 centimetres high, and the parenthetical cheese bun is thin, meaning its girth lies in the meat.

Upon arrival it prompted excitement and confusion. How was I supposed to eat the thing?

The answer is: messily.

Fortunately, it’s damn tasty, if a tad excessive. The pork belly is exotic and succulent, the barbeque sauce adds southern tang, the braised veggies leave a finger-licking chin rivulet and the bacon does what bacon always does: improves life. The egg, around which everything orbits, is lost amongst other flavours, but don’t worry, your arteries will know it’s there.

At the burger’s three-quarters mark, rumblings in my stomach were replaced by rumblings of self doubt.

Could I finish it?

When entertaining such thoughts, consider the lesson Milburn and Toombs taught us: if you’re going to go on a bender, you might as well go all the way. The same holds true for the burger they inspired – quitters need not apply.

Considering the extensive ingredients, the Milburn-Toombs burger is a reasonable $16.
