hen Kyley Henderson was in elementary school her mother, Elaine, encouraged her to draw, and one year a drawing of hers was used in the Robert Service School yearbook. Elaine, who is herself a landscape painter and sculptor, says that she always encouraged Kyley to develop her art as a kid.

Kyley remembers her mother telling her she ought to create a colouring book, and says that she did just that, on the sly, some of it during high school English classes, but that she kept the work fairly private.

Graduating, moving to Alberta, finding work and a relationship took precedence over the 14 pages of Klondikethemed art that she had produced, but she kept all her art materials with her.

Last winter, Elaine decided to spend the season out of Dawson for the first time in years, and went to stay with Kyley and her partner in Magrath, near Lethbridge.

Evening conversations turned to old topics and Elaine brought up the book idea again. Kyley surprised her by pulling the old pages out of storage. One thing led to another and they decided to work on a similar project together.

Kyley’s high school idea had been a book for kids to colour, but they decided to work with the current popularity of colouring books for adults. That meant none of the early drawings were useful, and they agree that the first five or so pages of the new work didn’t quite hit the mark, but they kept at it.

It took a lot longer than they had thought it would, and a project they’d intended to finish by Christmas lingered on into the late spring as each of the 41 pages took between 10 and 20 hours to produce.

The end result is Raven’s Colours – Taiga, a 41-page, spiralbound (so it can lie flat), colouring book printed on 70-pound paper, so that the finished product, coloured in pencil crayons or markers can look really good.

“You could take them out of the book and frame them,” said Elaine, remarking on the detail work that makes each page look like a template for a paintby-numbers exercise.

“This collaboration allows us to provide a book where every page has received the utmost attention and thought,” says Elaine.

n a second-floor office of Alkan Air, there is a bulletin board that holds photos of pilots with their aircraft.

The pilots are smiling – and a few of them are wet.

“This is the First Solo Wall,” says Dan Rosen, Alkan Air flight training unit officer. “We splash them with a cold bucket of water.”

Wendy Tayler, Alkan Air’s president, wasn’t splashed with water after her first solo, but she understands: “It’s mean, but it’s standard.”

“It helps create memories,” Rosen explains. “It’s a tradition; I got a cold splash of water when I did my first solo, and when I became an instructor and my first student soloed, he got splashed and so did I.” “You will never forget your first solo,” Tayler adds. “You will remember every minute.

“My instructor told me that I had just joined a very select few people on this earth: very few people have flown alone.

“It is a very special thing to accomplish.”

Since opening the flight school in October, more and more photos are added to this wall.

When this wall is full, that’s okay, because by then a new building will be ready to move into. Hopefully in September.

“The one thing we haven’t had in the Yukon for several years was a flight school,” says Tayler. “But we knew we wanted to grow be-

Dan Rosen is Alkan Air’s flight training unit officer and the one who has been tasked to build the only flight school in the three territories. With a diploma program set up with Yukon College, students can now access government grants and student loans yond the handful of Yukon adults wanting to learn to fly; we wanted to build something that we could market nationally and offer a twoyear college program.

“So, we met with Yukon College in October of last year and they jumped on it.”

Usually, a flight school needs to be established for 10 or 15 years before a college will partner with it.

“Fortunately, many of the people at the college are really passionate individuals and theya are moving toward becoming a university and they want to strengthen every program they have,” Tayler says.

“This was a really good fit as the flight school folds in nicely with their business courses.”

As a two-year business aviation diploma, students can apply for government grants and student loans.

Rosen was plucked from the medevac flight line and asked to step back into the role of an instructor.

“Then Wendy called me in to see if I wanted to actually run the flight school,” says Rosen.

“To build it,” Tayler clarifies.

“Build it, yeah, not just run it,” says Rosen. “Pretty soon, we didn’t have enough space for the ground schools as we were outgrowing our boardroom and had to teach in the waiting area downstairs.”

Tayler had plans to bring in even more students: “We are also going after international students, starting with India, and once we do that we will need more space.

“In the new building, we will have classrooms that will accommodate 28 students.”

As the only flight school in the three territories, there is a niche

market that can be filled.

“The skill set for a bush pilot is very, very different,” Tayler says.

“You have short runways, gravel runways and, in the Yukon in particular, you have all the winds coming off the different mountain ranges.

“Every mountain creates its own weather to some degree.”

“The judgment and skill set has to be honed quite well,” says Rosen.

Various air operations have specific needs. Tayler says they can customize a program for them. For instance, a Nunavut company would need them to train a pilot for remote bush work and short runways.

So, the new flight school now has three planes, a simulator and will soon have its own building.

How did that happen so fast?

Tayler answers almost automatically: “We are entrepreneurs.”

Cud Eastbound says last year’s Keno City Music Festival was fun and wholesome and this year’s will be, too

I

t may not be on the scale of the Atlin or Dawson music festivals, but the second annual Keno City Music Festival has a cachet all its own.

First, it’s casually organized.

Second, there’s no charge.

“It’s a free festival for the community, by the community,” says Cud Eastbound, one of the organizers. “We’re just trying to have people come together and music is a nice way to bring people together.”

The event takes place Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20 in the tiny community, located about 111 km northeast of Stewart Crossing on the Silver Trail.

Eastbound, himself a musician, is one of a handful of organizers and is managing his end of things from Dawson City.

He sees this year’s event, expected to draw about 200 people, as part of a long-term vision for the music scene in Keno.

“Keno is a really good starting ground for a music fest,” he says. “It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. And It’s quirky… the people who live there are characters.”

and infrastructure in Keno City, which has a population of about 20 in the summer. So the festival is more of a do-it-yourself, improvised event, Eastbound says.

That means it’s not a moneymaker for the 16 or so performing musicians, most from the Yukon.

“We will try to collect donations, but anyone who’s shown interest in performing, we stressed that there’s no monetary gain. No one’s charging a cover. It’s truly just open to the community,” says Eastbound, adding donations will support the performers’ food and gas.

Those performers include Dawson singer-songwriters Joey O’Neil, Bird Feet and Driftwood Holly; Whitehorse musicians Patrick Jacobson and Jude Waldman; Ontario’s Zakary Miller and Whitehorse bands The Lucky Ones and Soul Migration.

“We have a different mix of rock or folk, singer-songwriters,” Eastbound says. And he’s hoping for lots of dancing.

Musicians will play on a stage made from a flatbed truck, set up on the gravel lot next to the Sourdough Saloon in downtown Keno.

Festival-goers will be able to camp for free at a large baseball diamond on the edge of town.

Keno also has a campground in town and a few hotels.

And while the music events are linked to the saloon and are for adults only, Eastbound says families are welcome. There will be face painting and the location itself offers hiking trails and historical attractions.

But he points out a free festival also means people can’t expect too many amenities.

“If you can come up and be self-sufficient, you’re golden,” he says.

Eastbound won’t be performing, as he’ll be too busy ensuring there are enough outhouses, volunteers and power sources for the stage.

“We’re just kind of hoping for the best. Since it’s a free music festival… as long as there’s a P.A. and a stage, then it’s a success.”

Eastbound cautions that the road to Keno City, is in rough, washboard shape – particularly the 60 km from Mayo, so travellers should drive slowly on that section.

Summer Vacation

A

question that pops up every now and again is, Would students be better off without a summer vacation?

This stance claims that the luxurious two-and-a-half month summer break should be replaced with shorter and more frequent breaks throughout the year, since the summer break’s original purpose – of collecting the harvest – is no longer being served.

As much as I hate to admit it, this argument does present some valid points. One argument used to promote this change is that a student’s intellectual growth deteriorates over the course of a summer.

Additionally, the idea that students would be better able to retain information if they’re kept in an academic setting more continuously throughout the year is a logical concept.

But most of us are horrified at the notion of doing away with summer vacation.

Every adult has some fond memories of cherished summers.

We kids are still in the excitement of creating those memories.

While our theoretically optimal GPA average may suffer, every other aspect of our wellbeing is nurtured in the summer vacation environment.

Summer gives students one of life’s greatest luxuries: time.

Some teens spend this time going to summer camps. These camps range from the traditional canoeing and campfire experience to specialized camps specifically designed to enhance growth in a passion, such as sports or music. In turn, others become camp counsellors themselves or get other summer jobs to start learning the ways of the working world.

Some travel to get a taste of different cultures, and others make a trip down south to revamp their closet and quench their big city thirst.

Yet, no matter where our summer plans take us, everyone’s summer has the same interwoven elements of rest and relaxation.

From movie marathons, to sleeping in till noon, to lying in the grass on a lazy day, we’ll always find the time to recharge. Despite what the adult universe may think, the teenage world isn’t a carefree paradise. There’s stress and responsibilities that any human needs a break from. And summer

In all, I along with many others (I hope), strongly feel that summer is a gift of good weather. This blessing should not be wasted in the daily grind, that is working life, but should be experienced to the fullest potential through the simple joys in life, like rocking hammocks, long bike rides, picnic lunches, barbeque dinners and roasting marshmallows.

Through the Eyes of our Youth Children’s photography display at the Yukon Arts Centre

call this one ‘The Matchmaker’… because she’s the one who matched my mom and dad to me.”

He’s staring at one of about eight photos he is entering into this year’s art show at the ATCO Youth Art Gallery in the Yukon Arts Centre.

Lawrence, collage artist Amzie Cooke-Goodall, and Mario Macrae are just three of the many talented Whitehorse youth photographers featured at the show, all with either Autism or other learning disabilities.

Lawrence is exhibiting a series of photos he took when he was three-years-old. He took these photos during his final visit to the inter-country adoption agency in the Philippines before travelling to Canada to start his life with his adoptive parents.

Looking over the photos, we come across a photo called ‘Serious’. It is of a stern-looking woman leaning over her desk, clearly deep in conversation with his parents.

Lawrence’s mother, Rachel Grantham, proudly describes the moment: “You have your own kid

documenting, while we were very into this conversation, and he picked up the camera – well you see the height that he’s at, and she was explaining... she’s looking really serious.”

After hearing Lawrence’s story, while looking over her own son’s photos, project founder Lian Goodall explains, “Everyone has something varied, and we also have all the photos from Camp Raven.”

This is the show’s second year.

Last year’s theme, “Summer Fun”, was open to all mediums and showcased a wide variety of things, including sculptures and T-shirts. This year’s show is called “Journeys”, and is focused on photography.

The show opened on Aug. 9 with a representative from ATCO Electric cutting the ribbon.

The project is open to all youth participants of the Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon (LDAY), Autism Yukon, and Camp Raven programs.

Camp Raven is a day camp for children aged seven to 14. It’s organized and run by Learning Disabilities Yukon during the various school breaks in Whitehorse.

“I have a son who has a lot of

The Matchmaker PHOTO: by Ryan Lawrence learning disabilities, but he is also very very creative, and needed more of an even playing field to showcase that creativity,” Goodall says. “And I figured that there were possibly other children with learning disabilities that maybe don’t have the technique but have the passion.

“Sure, they have a learning disability, but they do have lot of creativity and that can come out in so many different ways that might not happen in school.

“And how often do you see kids experiencing photography at the elementary (school) level?

While discussing the joys and challenges of putting something of this magnitude together Goodalls says “It’s just me, I’m not affiliated with anything.”

When faced with the challenge of building the show itself, Goodall turned to the staff at the Yukon Arts Centre.

“The physicality of putting together a show could not happen without the people at the arts centre, because honestly they just know how to make it look good.

“They just, open it up. It’s an amazing space that we have. It has great lighting, and it’s a real

show for our kids. It’s not just some back alley or something.”

Last year’s event, organized

“I think what was incredible last year was how happy the parents were. Anything that can make our children stars is great. I got so many thank yous.”

All of these routes, some gnarly and others more familyfriendly, can be found up on Mount McIntyre, where years of volunteer labour is culminating this summer in a grand venture by the Contagious Mountain Bike Club (CMBC) to complete a professional multi-use trail.

Those views are a reason that it was “worth doing something really high quality,” so that as many people as possible can appreciate them.

Getting up to the new trails takes around 45 minutes on rough roads. If you’re game, take McLean Lake Road and turn left on the haul road, then right after about 100m and head up the descent road that leads to the tower on Mount McIntyre. The new trail, with a working name of “Erratica”, completes a network of roughly 10 kilometres of trails that range from blue (easy) to

double black (extra gnarly). The colour system parallels the codes used for ski trails.

If it all sounds a bit intimidating, the CMBC offers introductions to the local trail networks through weekly group rides for all levels of riders, provided you have your membership. Signing up will put you in the company of around 300 other mountain biking enthusiasts – which are good odds that you’ll find someone of your level to ride with.

The new trail build is the largest funded project in the club’s nine year history, but with the, well, contagious excitement building around it I doubt it will be the last. For more information about the CMBC, go to www.CMBCYukon.ca.

hat do robots dip in salsa? Microchips!

Salsa is the Spanish and Italian word for ‘sauce’, and besides being incredibly easy to prepare (chop stuff up and mix together), it’s also flexible in its variation.

Salsa can be made out of nearly any fruit or vegetable, to suit any sweet or savoury purpose.

Chopped strawberries, kiwis, fresh mint and lime juice make a fantastic summer salsa fresca, served alongside cinnamon sugar tortilla chips.

Canning with tomatoes does require a quick science lesson, though: tomatoes are a borderline acidic food, between high and low. This means they require the addition of an acid in order to preserve them safely. In this recipe for Chunky Chipotle Salsa, the lime juice and vinegar provide the necessary acidity (and flavour

Chunky Chipotle Salsa Makes five 500 ml jars INGREDIENTS: 8 lbs (about 18 cups) ripe tomatoes, diced* 2 cups seeded and diced Anaheim, Cubanelle, or bell peppers 2 cups chopped white or yellow onions � cup seeded and finely diced jalapeno peppers ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro 5 cloves of garlic, minced � cup tomato paste ¼ cup chopped canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (or ½ cup if you like it a little spicier) ¼ cup lime juice ¾ cup white vinegar 2 tsp salt

For beginner canners: don’t be intimidated by acidity science or the 18 cups of tomatoes required for this recipe. The tomatoes will cook down, and following a recipe covers your bases. Plus, if you’re like me, you’ll soon realize that five jars of salsa won’t seem like enough once you get into it!

METHOD: • Place diced tomatoes in a large colander or strainer, with 1 tsp of the salt, to drain for 30 minutes to an hour. Dump drained tomatoes into a large pot, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and boil gently, uncovered, for 45 minutes, or until thickened, stirring occasionally.

• Use a pot large enough to hold the jars and fill the pot with water; bring to a boil. Boil the empty jars in this pot to heat and sterilize them. Remove from water and set aside.

• Add all the remaining ingredients (diced peppers, onions, jalapenos, cilantro, garlic, tomato paste, chipotle peppers, lime juice, vinegar, salt, and cumin) to the tomatoes and mix. Bring to a boil again, and then reduce heat to a medium-low, and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.

• Ladle the hot salsa into the hot sterilized jars, leaving a half inch of space from the rim of the jar.

Wipe the rims clean and screw on the lids, then place jars in boiling water bath for 15 minutes.

Let cool completely, then store the jars of salsa in a cool place. *The tomatoes can be peeled or left unpeeled. To peel, score an X in the bottom of each tomato, then place them in a pot of boiling water for 1 minute, then transfer immediately to a bowl of ice water. The skins should just slip off.

Making Sangria While the Sun Shines Peach, Berry and Riesling Sangria INGREDIENTS: 1 lb (454 grams) ripe yellow peaches — about 5 small or 3 large 750 mL dry Riesling ¾ cup (180 mL) bourbon ¼ cup (60 mL) cinnamon simple syrup 2 Tbsp (30 mL) lemon juice 1 cup (250 mL) blueberries or raspberries 750 mL sparkling water 6 dashes orange bitters

Celebrate the season with summertime sangria

METHOD: Wash the peaches and slice them, skin and all, and place in a large bowl. Pour over the wine, bourbon, cinnamon simple syrup and lemon juice.

Stir, cover and chill for four hours. When you’re ready to serve, split the ingredients between two pitchers.

To each pitcher, add half the berries, sparkling water and bitters, and top up with ice.

Serve in wine glasses, spooning a bit of fruit into each one.

Makes two 750 ml pitchers of Sangria.

Cinnamon Simple Syrup INGREDIENTS: 1 cup (250 mL) water 2 cinnamon sticks ¾ (185 mL) cup sugar METHOD: In a small saucepan bring water and cinnamon sticks to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove cinnamon sticks, add sugar and stir over medium-high heat until sugar has completely dissolved. Remove from heat, cool to room temperature and pour into a sterilized glass jar. Refrigerate and use within 30 days.

T

he final week of Icelandic adventuring saw us completing the Ring Road, which encircles the whole country and has tourist spots dotted along the way. We followed it east and gradually north through glacier-domed mountains, bucolic sheep folds, thundering waterfalls and glistening black alluvial beaches that stretched along the coastline for miles at a time.

We visited the colossal, pipe organ-esque basalt formations and caves on the black beaches of Vik and the tiny fishing towns nestled in the lees of the eastern fjords.

A solo hike (read: scramble) saw me getting rather satisfyingly lost on a relic-strewn coastline near Eskifjordur. I found bleached bird skeletons and old fishing nets, strange beach glass and an old gravesite, roughly enclosed by a dilapidated rock wall. From that desolate shoreline, it was easy enough to imagine that civilization had long since passed; the only reminders left were low, crumbling walls of stone and Styrofoam.

I hiked and climbed my way along the coast until it became impassable and then, with only the mildest of panic, escaped by scaling a steep shale cliff. Incidentally, the hot pool in Eskirfjordur, surrounded by mountains on three sides, is a goddamn national

treasure and, naturally, my next stop.

After the eastern fjords, the Ring Road heads inland, cutting across a lengthy mountain pass to reach Akureyri in the north.

In the space of 30 minutes, we moved from sunshine, green grass and prancing lambs to a desolate white wasteland of howling winds, stark rocky outcroppings; landscapes and temperatures worthy of the Dempster.

The pass wound through steep foothills before spitting us out into the geothermally hyperactive valley of Myvatn, where a powder-blue, literally boiling lake bordered the road and was quite obviously not a cause for concern.

With the scalding ponds and steam geysers in our rearview, we finally reached Akureyri, the largest town on the north shore, home to a recently established university, and our last stop.

On the final day, after a quick trail ride on local Icelandic ponies and (of course) a soak in the hot pool, we returned to Reykjavik by way of a 6 km tunnel that took us right under the ocean.

On the whole, Iceland was both exactly what I’d hoped and a complete surprise, which is fitting considering that it’s basically built out of various dichotomies. In the space of two short weeks (and

Family Earns a Home, the Community Wins a Family

eff Wolsynuk looks like his happiness will burst out at any second.

Tanya Butler looks relieved and content.

The couple is sitting in the kitchen of their home.

Their home.

That they own.

Three years ago, they did not know that their lives would be so settled and secure; that their family – including Zahara, Leandra, Baelean and Jemma – could make vacation plans and save up for a special purchase and pay for sports and activities.

Stu MacKay joins them. He is received as if he were a favourite uncle.

As the executive director of Habitat for Humanity Yukon, he heads a team of volunteers and equally kind-hearted donors who make these kinds of transformations happen.

This duplex is home to the 15th and 16th Yukon families to be helped since 2004.

The 17th and 18th families saw the foundations started in July.

“I think this is a great way to look at long-term solutions for families,” says MacKay as he settles down at the kitchen table.

“Providing for decent, affordable and safe homes for families is probably the most effective way of breaking the cycle of poverty.”

Wolsynuk says “poverty” isn’t what people think. He had a good job and he was working part time, too. But, with four children plus two, Max and Darius, from a previous relationship, and with Butler staying home with the baby, it was tough.

“We sold our trailer and still had trouble coming up with a down payment,” says Wolsynuk. “It turned into a nightmare and I was left with no where,” he says of the financial obstacles in their way.

“I saw the advertisement for Habitat, and I know people who were involved, so I thought that the worst that could happen is they would say no.

“We filled in the application and, boom, we are in a home of our own and it is well within our means.”

He remembers: “I felt ecstatic, no more couch surfing.”

“We had a new baby coming and we had to live separately,” Butler explains.

“My grandpa is very proud of me,” says Wolsynuk. “And that means the world to me.”

Standing in front of their home, with the help of Habitat for Humanity Yukon and its many volunteers and donors is the Wolsynuk-Butler family: (from left) Tanya, Leandra, Jemma, Zahara, Baelean and Jeff MacKay says it wasn’t exactly “boom”: the process takes about six or seven months from application to acceptance.

“There are only three criteria,” he says.

“First, you need to be in need of housing because yours is either unsafe, too expensive or not suitable.

“Second, you need to be able to afford the mortgage... even though the mortgage is zero per cent and no down payment.”

“That’s a beautiful thing,” Wolsynuk chimes in.

“Our mortgage payments are pretty reasonable,” MacKay continues. “Most of the time mortgages come in around $800 a month.”

“It’s a beauty,” says Wolsynuk.

“It is 32 percent of my gross income.

“And it doesn’t change,” MacKay adds.

“At zero per cent interest,” Wolsynuk says, “there is no major panic to pay it off fast.

“I learned from my grandfather not to wait until retirement to have fun.”

MacKay agrees: “Once families stabilize and understand what the monthly payments are, they can manage the budget to support a lot more kids’ activities and all of those extras that were not available when they are in that loop that I call, ‘the rent-food cycle.’

“And if a family brings in more money later, that’s great, that’s called success.”

The third criteria is for the family to put up 500 hours of sweat equity into the home.

“Some people just can’t come out with a tool belt and start working on the house,” MacKay says. “So, we allow them to volunteer in the community anywhere they feel they can fit in. Food bank, women’s shelter, humane society, anywhere.

“We know that the community has given us a lot with donations to help make

these homes affordable, so we want to make sure the families give back to the community.”

“I used to work at The Deli,” says Butler. “So I made lunches for the volunteers.

Usually sandwiches and fruit and vegetable trays.”

“And we painted,” said Wolsynuk.

“And your relatives came in and helped,” MacKay reminds them.

Wolsynuk also coached hockey and worked with Scouts Canada.

“I’ve never volunteered this much before, but I am going to continue because he has taught me a lot,” he says, pointing at MacKay. “Without people like him, there is nobody there for people like me.”

This family of six now has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room.

“All handicap accessible,” says Butler.

“Yeah,” says Wolsynuk. “We can’t foresee the future... accidents happen.

“And with solar panels, this place costs less for electricity than it did in our trailer.”

After selling excess electricity back to the grid, they are expecting a rebate cheque at the end of the year.

“All of these houses are built to very high standards,” says MacKay. “The energy rating is 88, so, for practical purposes, their energy bill will be less than $200 a month.

“It is important that people can afford to buy the home, but it is also important that they can live in the home, too.”

The other benefit is that the house is located in Whistle Bend.

“When I heard it was in Whistle Bend, I was so excited,” says Butler.

“This place is turning into something else,” says Wolsynuk. “We have the trails and the pond... and there is a park being put in just over there.”

Butler adds: “I always had to worry about the kids on their bikes, but, here, they have the paved trails so they are just gone and they go in circles around the pond.”

“We have the world on this lot,” says Wolsynuk, summing up his feelings. “I’m happy.”

Do Festival-Goers Dream of Electric Beats?

Paradise Electronic Music Festival returns Aug. 19-21 for its 11th year

s the end of August approaches, and leaves are changing colour, it is time to say goodbye to festival season.

From August 19-21, hundreds will gather at Kettley’s Canyon to send it off in style.

Over two days, 20 DJs, local dance troupe BoSo and a live painter will perform at the 11th annual Paradise Electronic Music Festival. The festival takes place on an old gold mining site and blends the history of Yukon with its natural landscape.

“A beautiful creek (comes) through it, and when you are standing on stage, you overlook the marshes of Marsh Lake draining into the river – it’s pristine, it’s magical, it’s why we call it paradise,” says festival founder and organizer Kevin Jack.

There will be some changes from last year. Paradise will last two days instead of the usual one – a change that the organizers feel

makes sense given the work it takes to put on a festival. The property will also look slightly different as each year organizers move things around to keep it fresh.

Headliner Kraig Docherty will be returning to the Yukon for the fourth time to bring his blend of breaks, hip hop, funk and soul peppered with house and drum and bass to the large log stage.

Docherty heads up Twisted Productions in Vancouver and will be playing two sets during the weekend. He keeps coming back because of the festival’s community and the organizer Kevin Jack himself: “I know the heart and soul that Kevin (DJKJ) pours into everything he does, which will make Paradise something special for everyone, including myself.”

Local DJs will take their sounds and sets to the stage over the weekend. Long-time DJ veterans, such as DASH and Sickophant will play alongside up-and-coming DJs

that are new on the scene. Shannon Mallory, Jeremy Parkins and Purple Teeth will make their festival debuts.

The festival aims to give these new artists, such as 18-year-old Usagi Forest, a chance to create and express their own sound, Kevin Jack says.

“It’s important for people to feel that they can come as an artist and from their heart play what they want to play and there is no judgement,” he says.

The festival is as much about community for Jack as it is about the music. He credits the community, which spans age groups from 20 into the 50s, for keeping

the festival going. The festival is funded entirely by ticket sales and volunteer work. Although Jack has lost money in the festival over the years, he finds motivation in the community to continue to organize and build it.

While music festivals are becoming known for the garbagefilled fields festival goers leave behind, Paradise’s aftermath is different. Jack credits the community feel for his easy clean-up efforts.

At last year’s festival, Jack said festival goers for the most part cleaned up after themselves and that he found “the effort people put in to keep the ground clean (so) rewarding. I feel so blessed

that we have built this community that goes beyond a party scene – it’s a whole culture out there.”

The Paradise Electronic Music Festival takes place Friday, Aug. 19 from 5 p.m. to Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. You must be 19 and over to attend this festival, ID is required.

Tickets are available at Triple J’s Music, Tattoos and Piercing, or at the gate.

There is a free shuttle service all weekend long between Whitehorse and the festival grounds.

The Great Klondike Outhouse Race ‘The runs’ take on a new meaning

owadays, most people run away from the idea of using an outhouse. The Klondike Visitors Association (KVA) in Dawson City would rather you put that running to good use and join them in this year’s Great Klondike Outhouse Race, taking place Saturday, August 20.

A Dawson tradition since the 1970s, all ages and running abilities are invited to participate.

The race involves picking a theme, decorating an outhouse and wearing costumes centred on the chosen theme, then running with and pushing the outhouse through the streets of Dawson City.

Themes from past years have included: “Farts Canada” (a Parks Canada team), “The Smell of the Yukon” (a play on the popular Robert Service poem), and “Dumped at the Altar” (a team of crying wedding clad runners).

Teams are invited to bring their own outhouse, however the KVA has some available to rent out.

These outhouses are wheeled metal structures that resemble outdoor latrines. They are outfitted with rickshaw-like bars to help with pushing through the streets.

There are five participants per team, four to push the outhouse, and one to sit on the throne.

Dany Jette, visitor centre receptionist for the Yukon government, is in his fifth season running the race. His team usually consists of the other receptionists at the visitor centre and occasionally the boss “We have no idea yet this year what we’ll do. It’s hard to find a theme after a few years that’s never been done before,” says Jette. In the past few years, the team has come up with The Queen on her Throne with Bodyguards, Birds of a Turd and The Old Farts.

A week before the event and after some serious brainstorming, his team brings the outhouse frame into the visitor centre and starts decorating it in between doing their job of answering questions from tourists.

“The visitors usually laugh – they love it,” says Jette.

In fact, if the team is short a runner, what better place to recruit than at the visitor centre.

“A couple of years ago, we pulled in two journalists from New York,” he says.

On the day of the race, all teams will gather at Minto Park near the south end of town at 1 p.m. for the Show and Shine. This is their chance to impress the audience with their creativity and style.

A panel of judges assesses each team based on their design, theme and team spirit. Although everyone wins a prize of some kind,

there are some grand prizes to be had, such as the fastest outhouse, overall theme and costume, and the bathroom wall limerick or cheer contest, where teams must either have limericks painted on the outhouse walls, or have the most rousing and inspiring cheer.

After judging is completed, everyone lines up at the start line, and the race is on. Teams follow a pre-determined route through the centre of town, ending up back at Minto Park.

For the past several years, the race started and ended at Diamond Tooth Gerties gambling hall, in the centre of town.

This year, however, the KVA has decided to return the race to its roots at Minto Park and expand the event, offering a fundraiser barbecue after the race, open to all, as well as a toonie swim at the swimming pool, and games, including the great KVA water bal-

Last year, the visitor centre team won the outhouse trophy for participation. Jette is excited to see what his team will come up with this year.

“We have a few ideas, but we’re not sure yet,” he says.

“Whatever we come up with, though, I have to say this is one of the craziest events I’ve ever participated in.”
