A

lex Goodman doesn’t really cross borders so much as straddle them.

Although the Toronto-raised guitarist and composer has made his home in New York City for the past three-and-a-half years, he seems to keep one foot planted in the musical soil of his homeland.

“I think of Toronto as a very vibrant music scene. The jazz community in particular is very strong,” he says.

“It kind of functions in a similar way to New York, where you have a pool of very talented individuals who blaze off in different directions and kind of specialize in different areas of jazz music, or whatever genre.”

Goodman is currently on a Canadian tour to promote his latest CD, Border Crossing, slated for international release on April 15. It’s a compilation of tunes he wrote for an eclectic mix of instruments including voice, vibraphone, tuba, guitar and percussion.

Most of the musicians on that album are Canadian. But when he comes to Yukon this week, it will be with a different, New Yorkbased quartet playing repertoire designed for a new CD he hopes to release in 2017.

Goodman first moved to New York to pursue a masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music.

“When my visa was expiring and I was kind of reassessing, it was pretty clear that it would be best to stay longer in New York, because a lot of the initial time of developing relationships had already happened, and it made a lot of sense to kind of continue with it.”

Goodman sees a lot of similarities between Toronto and New York, as well as some differences.

“A lot of my friends moved from different parts of the country to Toronto. And that magnet effect definitely has implications for the music, because you just have a larger pool,” he says.

Things might have turned out differently if he had stuck with one of his musical passions as a teenager.

“I played in a punk band called the Nihilists. We played in a lot of hilarious venues around Toronto and had a lot of fun,” he laughs.

“But as the band grew, I got more interested in improvisation and taking solos. And I think that’s what naturally led into an interest and a curiosity for jazz.”

and the download is free at both the Apple and Android App Stores) but, rather, how four Yukoners, each with expert and diverse skills, teamed up with a programmer Outside to create the Yukon Baby app.

It was at the Hacking Health North event, two years ago, that Dr. Chris Naylor pitched an idea to the weekend conference. The local physician had one minute to excite one or more of the fellow attendees to join his project to use technology to advance health in the Yukon.

Shannon Ryan, a genetic counsellor under contract with the Yukon Government, was already in touch and ready to join.

“How do you lower birth defects?” she asks from the Health Promotions Unit office in downtown Whitehorse, a space we borrowed for the interview. “Well, you have healthier pregnancies... that’s how I came onto this team.”

Kathleen Cranfield, a registered midwife, was in the audience and she felt she could contribute.

Then there was Katie Swales who literally wrote the book on resources for babies and their moms in the Yukon, called Healthy Beginnings. She is the coordinator of Partners for Children, a federally funded Community Action Program for Children that is sponsored by Yukon College.

“A whole community of us created this booklet,” Swales says.

But thousands of the first print run ended up in the recycling cen-

tre after one month because an organization had pulled many of its programs.

“I wanted it to be virtual and online so that it can be updated easily and the organizations themselves can update them,” says Swales.

A website was a possibility, but not every woman has ready access to a computer.

“But a majority of women have a smartphone,” says Ryan. “They may not have a lot of minutes on it or a lot of data, but they have a smartphone and they are on it.”

The final member of the team is Wes Wilson, a programmer from British Columbia with a medical background. He was at the Hacking Health North conference remotely and had heard the pitch.

“It was amazing how we all came together,” says Swales.

“All of these health professionals saw the need in isolation and we came to this place.”

“It was very synergistic,” says Ryan.

“Yeah, yeah, it was...” Swales starts. “...it was coming together,” Ryan finishes.

Now, the hard work began. Just as an expectant mom searches all over for resources, this team of professionals searched all over for “content” for the Yukon Baby app.

The Pakistani Jazz Ensemble that played with Wynton Marsalis Jacket to produce an album of Rock and R&B covers.

The film Song of Lahore highlights the history of a booming film industry in Lahore during its cinema’s Golden Age (19591977). Most musicians that form the Sachel Jazz Ensemble were

that disbanded most musician groups, their work and art was considered “sinful.”

It wasn’t until 2004 with the opening of the Sachel Studio that the musicians began to resurrect their traditional music and bring it to the western world. As described by the ensemble’s conductor Nijat Ali, the world must know that “Pakistan is filled with artists and not terrorists.”

In 1967 during the Monterey Pop Festival, the older brother of Woodstock Ravi Shankar played a set of classic Indian compositions with Talba Player Ravi Rakha. A psychedelically stunned audience witnessed a form of music like nothing they have heard before.

What makes the sounds of the Sachel Jazz Ensemble – blended with the Lincoln Center Orchestra – so powerful is that is has never really been attempted before; bringing together classically trained American musicians, exposing them to new scales and blending traditional jazz instruments with sitars, tablas and dholaks .

The film Song of Lahore brings together much deserved appreciation and praise to the traditional music and musicians of Lahore Pakistan.

n 1996 American record producer Ry Cooder and Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González gathered a group of Cuban musicians to record what would be become one of the most successful world music albums of all time: The Buena Vista Social Club.

The tradition of how western countries understood world cultures through music was profoundly affected by this style of producing world music.

The exchange of music as a form of culture sharing through a common language of rhythm and harmony is again being reshaped.

The film Song of Lahore follows the opening of Sachel Studios in Lahore Pakistan in 2004 where a group of veteran musicians have been trying to make the world aware of their musical talent that has been passed down to them for generations.

The Sachel Jazz Ensemble’s sound is unlike anything heard in western renditions of standard jazz numbers.

A video posted in April of 2011 of the ensemble’s rendition and tribute to the Dave Brubeck’s Jazz standard “Take Five” became increasingly praised as a groundbreaking mixture of styles.

The ensemble’s persistence and passion for highlighting Lahore’s rich musical history has culminated in their performance with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.

The Danish Girl Attracts Controversy on Several Fronts OUT North Queer Film Festival presents The Danish Girl on April 16

A

t some point, perhaps, acting credentials and not gender identity, will dictate who gets what role.

Until then, high profile films like The Danish Girl and Dallas Buyers Club will continue to raise hackles in the transgender community for having cisgender (a term coined in the 1990s to denote a person whose self-identity matches their biological sex) actors play transgender characters.

And yet, amidst the backlash over Eddie Redmayne’s casting as Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl dwells a little known irony that one of his co-stars is a trans actress portraying a cis-female nurse. Her name is Rebecca Root, and her appearance in the film is a victory of sorts for those who choose not to live in or identify with the bodies they were born with.

by Alicia Vikaander, who won an Academy Award for this role) were both accomplished painters in 1920’s Copenhagen, although Einar’s brooding landscapes were better received than Gerda’s portraits.

One day, hurrying to finish a canvas of a young woman, Gerda asks Einar to fill in for the model.

He laughingly pulls on silk stockings and dainty slippers while cautioning her not to tell anyone.

Neither expects that they have just crossed a bridge of no return.

For Einar, the experience awakens buried feelings and he continues to pose for his wife in portraits that become the talk of the town and bring her new commercial success.

Loosely inspired by the year 2000 novel of the same name by

American author David Ebershoff, The Danish Girl is director Tom Hooper’s tender biopic of how the couple’s lives and marriage evolve and dissolve as they navigate Einar’s ground-breaking journey towards becoming Lili.

At first, seeing her husband in women’s clothes is a bit of a shared joke for Gerda. There is also the suggestion that she finds it titillating.

But as Lili’s personae increasingly overshadows Einar’s, Gerda demands a return to the man she married; something that is no longer possible.

Although Lili Elbe charted courageous territory during a time of overt homophobia and repressive sexual politics, history had mostly forgotten her until Ebershoff came across her story in a book on gender theory. Even then, Ebershoff, who is the former vicepresident and executive editor at Random House Publishing, was faced with such a lack of historical material that he chose to fiction-

alize her life.

English writer Lucinda Coxon adapted Ebershoff’s novel into a screenplay in 2004. Since then, she has been the only constant with a script that had been attached to at least three other directors before Hooper (Les Misérables, The King’s Speech). Studios were reluctant to fund a film about a subject that is poorly understood and still controversial in some circles.

Indeed, The Danish Girl opened in Qatar it was banned from further screenings due to its “depravity.”

And so it is a measure of how society is at a fundamental crossroads, that Hooper’s glorious, gentle, classically-styled film has also been labelled too genteel and that he has been criticized for giving Redmayne the role of Lili Elbe.

The Danish Girl is not a radical piece of filmmaking history, but it does offer a nuanced glimpse into the complexities of the transgender experience.

The OUT North Queer Film Festival presents The Danish Girl on Saturday, April 16 at the Beringia Interpretive Centre. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the film begins at 6 p.m.

The Japanese cultural festival Mura Matsuri takes place April 2 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre

apan is a country that is rich in history and has made quite the presence within popular Western culture. Think ninjas, samurai warriors, cherry blossoms, sushi, anime – the list goes on. On April 2 you can experience many of the wonderful things Japan has to offer at the festival hosted by the Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon.

The festival, called Mura Matsuri, takes place at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre in Whitehorse.

This is the second Mura Matsuri to take place. The last one was held five years ago as a fundraiser for the tsunami relief.

The name Mura Matsuri translates as the Village Festival or Harvest Festival. This is an event held yearly in all parts of Japan.

Mura Matsuri is a celebration of joy and happiness.

Fumi Torigai, who has been living in Whitehorse for 16 years, is a member of the Japanese Association of Yukon, and also one of the coordinators of the festival.

“This festival is for everyone, grownups, kids, grownups with a big kid in them- all are welcome to come an experience all the games and demonstrations,” he says.

For the artistically inclined, stations will be set up for origami and Japanese calligraphy (called Shodo), which uses a brush instead of a pen to create writing.

For the fashionistas, you will have the opportunity to try on traditional kimonos with the obi.

For the sports enthusiasts there will be demonstrations of two kinds of Japanese martial arts. The first is called aikido.

“This type of martial arts focusses on using the force of your opponent rather than aggression,” says Torigai.

The second type of martial arts is called Iaido, which is an aggressive form and uses real samurai swords. A special martial arts master will be conducting the dem-

For the small children there is a traditional Japanese game called Fukawarai. This game is a similar style to Pin the Tail on the Donkey, except more intricate. Children are blindfolded, and then they are given pieces in the shape of eyes, ears, mouth and a nose, and then they have to stick them on a piece of paper which has a large face.

Of course adults are welcome to

take a crack at this, too.

For those who have a keen interest in culture, a traditional Japanese tea ceremony demonstration will be featured. A tea master from Vancouver will be on hand showing this beautiful yet detailed tradition.

Now, if you happen to get hungry while partaking in all these cultural activities, there will be bento box lunches available for $10. The bento box will consist of

sushi (California roll), and a dish called nimono, which is a type of stew consisting of meat and vegetables and is simmered very slowly.

The Mura Matsuri Japanese cultural festival takes place on April 2 at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre in Whitehorse. Admission is by donation. Be sure to also look for the “Happy Festival Coat,” which will be worn by many of the children and adult volunteers.

“This is a special coat that was created specially for his festival, and made possible by funding from The National Association of Japanese Canadians,” says Torigai.

The shows are tense in subject matter, enabling the Exploring Justice series to offer an inside look at some of the issues that continue to exist in our society and a venue to explore human nature – both good and bad.

“Everyone brings their own stories to a play; a lot of people will see them from a different view from their own,” remarked Flather’s.

The Exploring Justice playwriting series runs until June.

waandak Theatre is known for producing high quality, thought provoking and original productions. A large portion of its mandate is to help cultivate Aboriginal and Northern artists gain professional experience and exposure on stages close and far from home.

Now celebrating their 15th year, Gwaandak continues to cultivate new theatre and artists with Its Exploring Justice play reading series, which runs until June.

The Exploring Justice series centres on staged readings of five new plays written by Yukon playwrights that deal with “complex real-life situations around crime, justice, war, decolonization, personal responsibility and complicity.”

The Exploring Justice series was conceived when Managing Artistic Director and Gwaandak theatre co-founder Patti Flathers noticed a lot of recurring themes about human struggle and inequalities in the company’s Yukon Rising Voices playwright group and created the Exploring Justice series to help foster and engage these heavy themes.

An open call for play submissions was sent out by the company and five plays were chosen to be presented.

“I chose (the theme of) justice that would stimulate and engage, and shows that were finished,” Flathers says. “The playwrights

Make those lunch meetings worth attending!

From My Mother’s Kitchen with Murray Martin

Desserts INGREDIENTS 12 x 3-inch tart shells 1 egg lightly beaten 1/2 cup corn syrup 1 tsp lemon juice 3/4 tsp vanilla 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour 1 ½ cup blueberries 3 Tbsp melted butter METHOD Preheat oven at 375ºF. Leave shells in foil and place on baking sheet. In a large bowl, whisk egg with syrup, juice and vanilla. In a separate bowl stir sugar and flour together and then stir in egg mixture with butter. Divide berries among shells. Pour egg mixture in each shell, filling to the top.

Bake until the bottom is bubbly and top is a bit crusty (about 29 minutes). Tarts will firm up once cooled. Can refrigerate up to 2 days.

OLD FASHIONED PUMPKIN PIE

‘50S FOOD CAKE

INGREDIENTS 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp ginger 1/2 tsp salt 1-½ cups pureed pumpkin 1 Tbsp molasses 2 Tbls orange juice 2 eggs well beaten 1 cup scalded milk 9 inch pie shell

INGREDIENTS Cake: 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 1 cup sugar 1 ½ tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 2 eggs 1 ½ cups sour milk* 1/3 cup vegetable oil Icing: 14 oz. pk. cream cheese, soften 1/4 cup butter 1 cup icing sugar 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 tsp vanilla

METHOD Wash, peel, core and slice apples into large baking dish that has been greased. Sprinkle with cinnamon and salt. Drizzle water and lemon juice over. Stir together flour and brown sugar, then cut in butter with pastry blender.

Turn out over apples and pat down firmly.

Bake in preheated oven of 350F. for one hour. Serve with milk or cream.

METHOD Combine sugar, spices, salt and pumpkin.

Add molasses, orange juice, eggs and hot milk.

Pour into pie shell. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 420ºF for 10 minutes, then turn oven back to a moderate 350ºF for 30 to 40 minutes.

A Klondike Korner with Dan Davidson

Germans love Jack London

W

hy is Robert Service so much better known here than Jack London?

This question comes from Wolfgang Robert Greiner, one of five German journalists I was invited to meet for breakfast at the Aurora Inn in late February.

Their primary literary interest is in Jack London, whose Yukon themed short stories were standard fare in German schoolbooks on both sides of the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Soviet Union and the reunification of Germany.

London’s socialist leanings made him an acceptable American author, though his works were often presented as children’s fare and were therefore bowdlerized to remove some of the more adult content.

Greiner, who edits a website and blog on London’s works, was galvanized into fresh enthusiasm by the recent publication of unexpurgated translations of London’s work, and part of our meeting today involves me sitting for a video interview, repeating some of the information that I have already discussed with him and his companions over the meal.

Events used to promote the German manufacturer’s tires. This year he has organized this “fam tour,” bringing with him Martin Haeussermann, a Fulda coverage veteran; Sabrina Hasenbein, who organizes events for German travellers in Ontario; Wolfgang Jürgen Tischer, whose magazine is showcasing Canada in four issues this year; Sabine Ilse Loeprick, who usually writes about urban areas; and Greiner.

They’ve visited the Jack London Cabin and Interpretive Centre, on the corner of 8th Avenue and Firth St., and the RobJack London fans visiting from Germany are Holder Bergold, ert Service Cabin just up left, Martin Haeussermann, Sabrina Hasenbein, Wolfgang the road, as Jürgen Tischer, Sabine Ilse Loeprick, and Wolfgang Robert well as the Museum on Greiner at the Aurora Inn in Dawson City in February 5th Avenue.

In the absence of the women who normally run the centre and interpret London’s Yukon experience, I’ve been tapped by a former student of mine, who now works for Yukon’s Tourism Department, to try to answer some of their questions. I do my best, with the assistance of Dick North’s masterful memoir, Sailor on Snowshoes, which rests near at hand while we chat.

They understand that the gold struck London came North to find his fortune, hoping that it might provide him the resources to focus on the career he wanted to have, that of a writer. They realize that the gold he gathered while here was to be found in anecdotes heard during his long winter in several cabins near Henderson Creek, in the settings and the personal experiences that burned themselves into his psyche and galvanized his writing when he returned to California.

Yet there is that puzzle. How come Service is, in their eyes at least, better known in Canada?

George Orwell suggested that

poetry is a private linguistic joke that does not travel well. That may be true, but it lends itself to being imprinted in the memory.

There is scarcely a Canadian of a certain age who cannot finish this line: “There are strange things done ……”; or this one “A bunch of the boys were whooping it up….” ; or this one; “I wanted the gold and I sought it….”

They may know The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea Wolf and the short story “To Build a Fire,” but it’s less likely that they can quote a line from them. Prose doesn’t embed itself in a mind in quite the same way.

My breakfast companions nod when I tell them that, and it appears I have provided them with an answer that makes sense.

Debbie recently retired from the Yukon Government, where she worked as a Dental Therapist for many years. “We put on many workshops throughout the year for our expecting mothers.”

A Nursing Bottle Decay workshop was held on March 21st and 22nd, 2016 in the Round Room of the Health and Social Building. There were 1 young mother and her baby, and 6 pregnant young women in attendance. Both days, healthy snacks and lunches were served.

The young mothers received parent dental bags and pre-natal dental bags. The parent dental bags had toothbrushes for mom and dad, floss, toothpaste, toothbrush covers and a tongue cleaner. The pre-natal bags had toddler toothbrush, 4-24 month old toothbrush, anti-cavity toothpaste, children flossers, a 2-minute brushing timer, dental mirror, toothbrush cover, and a facecloth to wipe and clean baby’s teeth and gums.

Overall, the workshop was well attended and the young women stated they enjoyed the workshop and dental presentation. During the first day, an elder sat in the workshop.

Part 2 of this workshop will be held on March 29 and 30, 2016 with Ida Asp. She will be teaching the young women how to make a baby belt. I

f a musical shindig at the Old Fire Hall this Saturday puts you in mind of a New Orleans street party, Ryan McNally won’t be the least bit disappointed.

The event is intended to introduce Yukon audiences to the Whitehorse singer-songwriter’s newest CD, Steppin’ Down South.

The bulk of the album consists of nine tunes McNally wrote during a month-long stint in New Orleans last year.

“People probably think with all the horns and stuff that it’s more of a trad jazz album, but there’s a lot of different sounds to it. It has a lot of jug band,” McNally says.

“I was listening to a lot of Gus Cannon and Memphis Jug Band at the time. I just really dig listening to a lot of the street band music, where it’s kind of less sophisticated. It’s less about the complexities of the music and more just about the groove, and everybody sitting in the pocket.”

The tenth cut on the CD is McNally’s treatment of the 1910 Shelton Brooks classic, “Some of These Days”, which became the theme song of Sophie Tucker (The Last of the Red Hot Mamas).

McNally hails from the small town of Rockburn, in the southwest corner of Québec, just across the line from New York State.

“You could throw a rock over

the border from where I grew up,” he says.

He attributes his interest in jazz to a grandfather who was an avid jazz fan and pianist. Although his grandfather died long before McNally was born, he left a treasure trove of 78-rpm records in his barn.

“

All this music is written for certain dance steps. I had that in mind when putting the tunes together. I really wanted it to just be easy to take a partner and to dance to.

“I started listening to that and my older brother’s and my dad’s old classic rock. And my mom was an antique dealer, so she always had these old cabinet record players that would actually play 78s,” he says.

After studying audio engineering for a year at Vanier College, McNally found himself at loose ends, since it wasn’t easy for someone with limited French to find work in Montréal. In 2007, a family friend was moving north and offered him a ride to Whitehorse.

“I moved here when I was 21, so I hadn’t really decided what I was going to be when I grew up,” he says.

“I have that attitude, I guess, of just hustling to get a job, like bag boy or anything like that. And I ended up getting every job that I applied for and every gig that I tried to get, and it just became pretty hard to leave.”

After doing a variety of jobs, including a technician stint at the Yukon Arts Centre, McNally found his musical sideline blossoming to the point he could pursue it fulltime.

His first CD, a blues album called Down Home, came out in 2011. His newest CD actually had its official release in January, during a brief tour of Ontario and Quebec. It was later showcased at the Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City.

He considers this weekend’s unveiling in Whitehorse the “homecoming launch” for the CD, which was recorded last fall in Bob Hamilton’s Old Crow Studio on the Alaska Highway south.

After making a few demos with traditional recording techniques, McNally decided to take the chance of recording live, with all the musicians together in studio.

“I just wasn’t happy with the energy that was happening, coming through the speaker. It didn’t sound like the band was together,” he explains.

“That was kind of a big decision, because that was the first time I’d done that, and you never know. You have to live with it if anything goes wrong, or do it over

and over, but it actually went pretty quickly.

“We recorded it in three days and the mastering and everything was done in a couple of weeks.

The Down Home album took just a bit over a year, so by the time it was released, the tunes were already about two and a half years old.”

The album’s personnel include Yukoners Patrick Hamilton on banjo, kick drum and supporting vocals and Kieran Poile on fiddle, as well as Christian Leclerc, from Montréal, on tuba and Los Angeles horn player Justin Rubenstein doubling on trumpet and trombone.

McNally handles guitar, as well as contributing a rich baritone that is occasionally reminiscent of Leon Redbone, especially on the

cut called “Operator Blues”.

From the walking blues style of “Weeping Willow Blues” through more uptempo numbers such as “Ramblin’ Gal Blues”, the New Orleans flavour is unmistakeable.

“All this music is written for certain dance steps. I had that in mind when putting the tunes together. I really wanted it to just be easy to take a partner and to dance to,” McNally says.

The group will play all 10 cuts from the album during two shows on Saturday, April 2 at the Old Fire Hall. The first is 6:30 p.m. and the second starts at 8:45.

“That was awesome,” says Swales. “I was looking into it and it is expensive to do and they were in the process of doing it already.”

They were allowed to use it, so now they continued building on the app with meetings every couple of weeks, with Wilson joining in with his face looking out from a laptop sitting on a table.

“We tried to bring it all together in one place,” says Ryan.

“That is one of the determinants in health,” Swales explains, adding, “It was the Chaos Theory: there are no connections, just great things happening everywhere, and, good luck.”

To be accessible, though, it had to be free. So they explored funding opportunities and gained support from Yukon Government’s Health and Social Services, Parners for Children of Yukon College, Partenariat communauté en santé, Technology Innovation and Northwestel.

Last month, after two years, Yukon Baby was launched. But, “this is a living, breathing thing and it continues to evolve,” says Ryan. More interactive features will be added to make it fun and encourage people to go to it every day.

hether on a ski trek hike or bike trip, the mornings are chilly and the toughest part of the whole day is unzipping your sleeping bag and getting up. With a companion, we are all guilty of trying to pretend to be asleep in the hopes they will get up and get things going. Things get better once you’ve made the move to get up.

It’s safer to fire up the stove outside the tent, but when it’s cold and if you are careful breakfast can be cooked in the tent while the sleeping bags are airing out on some nearby willow or buckbrush. Weight-wise, breakfast is probably the lightest meal you’ll be carrying as most of it is in powdered form and is prepared by adding boiling water.

First boil about 4 cups of water from which you can make instant coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Unless it is a real bare-bones trek you will have a small bowl or a second cup each in which to prepare the main meal while you have your drink at the same time.

Instant hot cereal comes in a variety of flavours so you can avoid the same taste every morning.

Add some powdered milk and dried cranberries or raisins. Add the boiling water a little at a time to reach the desired consistency.

Gorp without chocolate is also a good addition to the mix.

This is an ideal breakfast or warm-up snack at any time of the day, especially if you’ve purchased a mix of flavours.

I always make a trip menu so I can be sure to have what I need for each meal with a bit extra for essential snacks. The hot cereal, tea, hot chocolate and instant coffee all come in individual servings and powdered milk and dried fruit can be pre-measured and carried in a Ziploc bag with the plastic measuring spoon available for consistency.

Another really satisfying, healthy breakfast is granola, with a variety of what I call breakfast nuts, which are unsalted peanuts, pecans, cashews (available at the bulk bins at the grocery store) with some dried cranberries, blueberries or raisins. Just make your favourite herbal tea (Orange or Lemon Zinger are suggested) and pour it over the dry mix as

you pour milk on cereal. The tea is fresh and hot and the mix will fill you up and warm you in a similar way to the instant hot cereal.
