his is a photo I took of my Border Collie, Belle, and I (camera was on a tripod) just after we moved into our cabin north of Whitehorse in Dec 2014. I’d lived in the Yukon for 18 months in 2012/13 but had to leave for a while to go home to Ontario. My mother has a farm and has bred Border Collies for 30+ years, so I grew up with Belle’s great x4 grandmother as my childhood dog.

Mum gave me Belle as a 6 month old puppy and I drove back to the Yukon in May 2014 with Belle, age 1, squished in the car amongst all my belongings! It was pretty much the first time she’d been off the farm and it was for an 8 day, 5,500km road trip! She survived the culture shock and loves it in the Yukon. Belle is my hiking and running companion (she did the Mayo midnight summer solstice half marathon with me in 2014), herds grouse in my yard and the neighbour’s chickens! We are about to move to West Dawson for our next adventure.

hile other girls her age were in their bedrooms pretending to be Madonna or some other pop idol, Champian Fulton was busy channelling a legendary jazz singer who died back in 1963.

“You know how kids like to pretend and tell stories? My story was that I was Dinah Washington.”

Born in Oklahoma, Fulton grew up surrounded by jazz. Her father, Stephen Fulton is a trumpeter and music educator, and her family’s circle of friends included jazz luminaries such as trumpeter Clark Terry and bassist Major Holley.

“At the time, I didn’t think anything of it. I just sort of took it for granted that every kid had that kind of friends,” she says.

Before she was 10 years old, Fulton started to become “really serious” about wanting to be a musician.

“I discovered that a lot of these people I knew were on all my favourite records. And even if they weren’t on my favourite records, they knew the people who were.

That’s when I started to realize I was part of something special.”

It was on one of her weekly outings to the record store with her father that she first encountered her musical heroine, when her father bought her a copy of Washington’s For Those in Love album.

“I was so excited that Clark was on it, and when we listened to it, I completely fell in love with the sound of her voice, her rhythm, the whole record, I was just fascinated by it. I just identified with

“It wasn’t until many years later, when I learned more about her as a person, that I even thought about her in that sense of being a woman in a man’s world. That all came much later.”

Fulton can’t remember when she first started learning piano from her grandmother, and she has always been a singer.

“I think all little kids like to sing, because it’s something you can do right away with no instrument. It’s just like talking; you can open your mouth and sing. It’s easy to do.”

Along the way, she also learned to play trumpet and drums, but decided to dedicate herself to

singing and piano when she graduated high school.

Fulton doesn’t bristle at the observation that her performances seem to suggest more than one musical personality, with the strong block chords of her piano playing contrasting with a softer, melodic vocal line.

“I think most of us have two sides to our personality, and I think having the two instruments gives me an opportunity to work with both sides, either simultaneously or back and forth.”

While it’s easy to trace her vocal influences to the likes of Washington and Sarah Vaughan, Fulton cites Red Garland, Wynton Kelly and Bud Powell as early piano mentors.

“Many years later on I became really obsessed with Erroll Garner, again because of the block chords,” she says. “But I think one of my favourite musical influences in general was the Count Basie Band. I love the aesthetics of the Count Basie band, either in the small group, the trio, or the big band.”

So, if she were not so busy as a bandleader in the male-dominated

world of jazz, who would she most like to perform with?

“This is going to sound funny, but I’m going to say it. I would like to work in the Count Basie band, but as the piano player. Maybe there could be two pianos, one for me and one for Bill Basie,” she laughs.

This weekend, Fulton will perform in Whitehorse with a quartet that includes trumpet player Cory Weeds, founder of the renowned Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver, along with Jodi Proznick on bass and Julian MacDonaugh on drums.

The repertoire will be largely from her latest CD, After Dark, a tribute to the music of Dinah Washington. The foursome will also play a few numbers from a CD she recorded with Weeds, called Change Partners. One of tunes will be her father’s composition, “Bring Enough Clothes for Three Days.”

The Jazz on the Wing concert is Sunday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m., on stage at the Yukon Arts Centre.

Existential Mornings at the Dawson Checkpoint for the Yukon Quest G

abriella (Gaby) Sgaga is tired as the Quest Layover nears its end at the Visitors Information Centre (VIC) in Dawson City.

She’s been holding down the reception desk pretty continuously ever since the teams started rolling in three days earlier, existing on a bare minimum of sleep (a few hours after 45 hours straight) as she dispatches volunteers to duties on the street or in the territorial campground across the Yukon River ice bridge.

The VIC is right across the street from the NWT Information Centre, where the mushers and their BABY dogs pullJANE up under the big Yukon Quest banner, in the chute that is cleverly arranged so that local traffic can still get by on Front Street.

Gaby has been involved with the Quest for 17 years, and has been the mainstay and chief of the Dawson Checkpoint for the last decade. She says there are ways it gets easier with time, but it’s not predictable.

“It gets easier when you know what to do, but there’s always challenges and things that take a turn.”

One thing that felt odd this year was going back to the long standing routine of the 36 hour mid-point layover, which was disrupted last year when the Quest board decided that 24 hours would be enough. The change didn’t go over well with just about everyone and so the race went back to the old timing this year.

“I felt totally thrown off… in my head.”

Last year felt too short, she said, and this year, even though it was a return to normal, felt too long.

“Otherwise, everything went very smoothly. We were all kind of nervous, because it was going so smoothly. You do always expect something to go wrong.”

The other major change this year was the route, which had to divert from the river due to jumble ice and open leads. From Forty Mile, it went inland to the Clinton Creek Road and up to the Top of the World Highway for the final leg to Dawson.

“We had great volunteers again this year,” she said. “There were 41 this year, and 20 of them – almost half – were locals, which is great. I usually get about two–thirds from Outside. There were folks from Upper State New York, BC, Ontario, all across Canada and some of the USA, France and Switzerland.

Learning to Love Yourself I know that self-love is important, but why is it so hard for me to practice it all the time? I often tend to put others before me and have negative thoughts about myself when situations get hard.

How can I remember to use selflove more often?

S

elf-love is misunderstood by a lot of people and these misconceptions often stay in our thoughts. Many people perceive self-love as the same as being selfish or self-centered; they believe it is negative.

Self-love is not negative; it is a necessity to be able to love others.

Consider this quote from researcher and author Brené Brown: “You cannot love someone else more than you love yourself.”

This would mean that you cannot love your child, your partner, your parents, your friends, more that you love yourself.

With love comes acceptance.

The more you accept yourself fully, the more you love yourself – by accepting your body fully; your hair, your nose, your hips, your chest; by accepting your past,

your choices, by accepting the fact that you don’t have control over everything.

Accepting is about being constructive. By learning from your past and thinking about your future – but not worrying about it – you are taking the negative and positive and moving forward. By accepting and embracing fully who you truly are will bring you closer to loving yourself.

Here are some tricks on how to remember to practice self-love.

It’s all about small steps. Think of it as accepting, embracing and loving yourself more often.

Write a list of all of the things that you love about yourself. Notice the things that are not on that list. Write those down on a separate list without judgment. Shining

a light on the things you don’t accept about yourself will give you awareness of what to work on.

Read great books (or listen to audio books) like: Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown or Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz.

Talk to close friends and family members about self-love. The more we talk about it, the more we remember.

Change your passwords to words that give you strength.

Put quotes like “I can only love others as much as I love myself” somewhere visible, for example in your room, washroom, at work.

As she approaches her goal, Loxam sees the blog evolving into a broader look at Yukon food. An avid cook herself, she hopes to talk to the many other food enthusiasts in Yukon.

“I’d like to share other people’s stories. Obviously there are people besides me buying the Thai basil at the grocery store and I’d like to find them. I’ve started reading books like cookbooks of the north so that I can try to understand what people think of as Yukon food.”

As well, the topic of how we get and grow food is of increasing interest to Loxam.

“I’ve always lived in big cities and didn’t think about it much.

There are farms here and it’s increasing — unfortunately partly due to climate change — but there are other changes in technology and more people wanting to eat food that’s actually grown where they live. These are all things I’d like to explore at some point.”

But first, Loxam feels there’s still a need for a comprehensive list of restaurants in Whitehorse and Yukon. Trip Advisor, Yelp, and Urban Spoon are all incomplete sources, which she thinks is a pity, both for locals and visitors.

“There are a few good restaurants that aren’t on Trip Advisor because they’re just not visited by tourists. We should recognize all the good things that are here so that we can then showcase that to other people.”

She encourages locals to go on Trip Advisor and update or add their favourite places to give visitors a more complete picture of what’s on offer here in Yukon.

I

t’s easy to distinguish what the latest food trends are when you see the latest creative potato chip flavours. I realize this sounds a little crazy, but let me explain.

A recent trip to Superstore had me eyeing up the 60-cent bags of President’s Choice harissa hummus chips. This particular variety is in their “world of flavours” collection, along with Jamaican jerk chicken, Sriracha, poutine and Moroccan spice. The thing that all of these chip flavours have in common is that they’ve all recently had a moment in the foodie spotlight.

So, back to harissa – the perfect substitute for those who are suffering from a Sriracha hangover, but still want their food to be hot.

It’s a condiment made from spicy chiles, used most often in Middle Eastern and North African cooking.

When blended up chiles meet garlic, oil and aromatic spices, a feisty red paste is made that will liven up lots of dishes. Frankly, I haven’t had much luck finding the condiment in stores here, although Superstore and Independent both carry a powder form of it in their Black Label collection.

Here are a few of my favourite ways to use it: As the chip flavour suggests, blend a teaspoon or two into your favourite hummus recipe. Taste first, and add more if you’re looking for more of a kick.

Swap harissa for chili powder in chili recipes.

A new twist on brunch – simmer chopped or canned tomatoes with onion, garlic, green peppers and a few teaspoons of harissa. Make holes in the sauce and crack a few eggs into them. Cover and cook until the eggs are set– they will be white all around, and the yolks will be slightly runny.

Sprinkle the powdered variety on butter-coated popcorn.

For those that like it hot To make your own version, here’s what you’ll need:

Harissa Sauce INGREDIENTS A couple of dried chiles of your choice* 1 tsp. caraway (seeds are preferable, but ground works too) 1 tsp. coriander 1 tsp. cumin 3 garlic cloves 2 tbsp. olive oil Optional add-ins: lemon juice, fresh cilantro, sun-dried tomatoes, tomato paste Guajillo chiles will make a moderately spicy harissa. You can also add-in chipotle or morita chiles for a smokier flavour. For a very mild harissa, use roasted red peppers instead of chiles.

METHOD • Start by re-hydrating the chiles by covering them with boiling water and soaking for 20-30 minutes. If you’re using seeds, toast the spices in a dry skillet over low heat and then grind in a mortar and pestle or coffee grinder. Remove chile stems and seeds. Add all ingredients into a food processor and blend until a smooth, thick paste forms. Scrape down the sides of the bowl occasionally. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

• To store, transfer to a jar and drizzle a light layer of olive oil on top to keep it fresh. This method will keep the harissa for about a month, as long as you always keep oil on the surface. Alternatively, you can spoon the harissa into an ice cube tray and freeze for later use – just store the frozen cubes in a freezer-proof bag or container.

f you’ve got a yen to hear some some good old-fashioned country fiddle playing, you won’t want to miss April Verch. Verch, along with bandmates Cody Walters (banjo and electric bass) and Alex Rubin (guitar and mandolin) will be stomping, singing, fiddling and strumming their way into Whitehorse Friday, March 4th.

A self-described “Ottawa-Valley Girl,” Verch originally hails from Pembroke, Ontario, where she was “born and raised” on

this style of music. She was three when she began step dancing and six when she began playing the fiddle, she says.

With song titles such as “Bigeared Mule,” “Reels Tadoussac et Lindbergh” and “Cruel Willie,” Verch describes her style as “traditional, much more than contemporary,” with FrancoCeltic and bluegrass influences.

“It’s hard to say why I am so drawn to the traditional style… when you fall for something, there’s always this element of

the unknown,” she says. “I have a strong affinity for the way life used to be, growing up in a small rural community where everyone helps each other out and you work with your hands. The music just goes with it.”

Verch is a fiddle player of some renown, with numerous awards.

In 2010 she played before the entire country as part of the opening ceremony at the Vancouver Olympics. She released her first album, Springtime Fiddle, in 1992 and has since gone on to

release 10 more.Her most recent album, The New Part, debuted in April of 2015.

Verch tours widely, playing Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Australia and the United States. While this is her first time in the Yukon, Verch says it’s a place she’s always wanted to visit.

“We’ve been to some pretty cool places in the North, in Alaska and Nunavut… there’s something about sharing music in small communities that have kept their

traditions alive, which is just so amazing.”

Verch will be at playing at the Yukon Arts Centre on March 4th.

It’s Not Off Script If There Isn’t A Script

The Guild opens The Improv Project

heatre-goers, is your relationship with plays getting a little humdrum? Are you looking for more spontaneity in your live-performances? Are you tired of rehearsed scripts, structured plot lines and carefully planned story arcs? Then maybe it’s time to open your mind to other, less “vanilla” theatre going experiences at try a little improv.

You can get a taste of this exotic style of live performance with The Improv Project, which opens March 3rd at the Guild Hall.

The piece will be comprised of 12 separate, serialized “episodes” and will be science fictionthemed, says director Joshua Beaudry. The “sci-fi saga,” as he calls it, will place created characters in a series of situations that will flow organically into each other, resulting in totally unscripted, unplanned theatre.

While each of the 12 performances is a new episode in the series that will feed into each other, Beaudry says anyone can pop in to see a show in the series at any time without having seen any of the preceding shows.

“It will sort of pick up in the middle of the characters’ lives, sort of like in Star Trek,” he says.

“The difficult thing about this show is, you really don’t want to plan it at all.”

Beaudry has come to Whitehorse from Saskatoon to specifically to direct The Improv Project.

In his home province, he is a 14year veteran of the improv troupe The Saskatoon Soaps.The Soaps are a character-based improv group that has been performing since the 1980’s, he says.

While Beaudry himself hails from the Outside, the actors in The Improv Project are all Yukoners, some of which are familiar names. The roster includes Stephanie Aube, Mercedes Bacon-Trap-

“This town has a lot of great improvisors,” he says.

In lieu of rehearsal – since it’s technically impossible to rehearse improvisational theatre by definition – Beaudry says the actors having been doing improv workshops and games, getting ready to work together on stage.

love to travel; seeing new places, meeting new people.

Experience, after all is priceless.

I also love to knit. Imagine my delight when I purchased Silk Road Socks by Hunter Hammersen, with 93 pages of history and knitting.

The book is published by Cooperative Press, Cleveland, Ohio, 2010.

Hunter Hammersen has designed 14 sock patterns inspired by places along the Silk Road. The title page caught my eye – a map with socks along the ancient Silk Road, which stretched from Susa in northern Persia to the Mediter-

ranean Sea in Asia Minor.

The knit patterns are not for novice sock knitters. But once you master knitting in the round, heel flaps and turning, you will want to start on a journey with one of Hammersen’s patterns.

The patterns are written for double point needles, top down with basic construction.

Instructions are clear and illustrations excellent. The patterns use twisted, traveling and lace stitches to create cables and overall texture. The socks are intricate, interesting and awesome photographs highlight the stitches.

Hammersen includes coloured drawings of Oriental rugs that inspire her sock patterns.

While she does not share knitting history, the book is full of information about the Silk Road and rug making traditions along the route.

Serab is a town in northwestern Iran. It is a market hub for woven rugs from villages in the area. Looms in the area create a unique rug – always long and narrow. Camel colours predominate with blue and red accents. My first stop on the Silk Road was Nain, a small town in the middle of Iran. I

will stop in Serab next!

Inside the book a wonderful map shows the modern countries along the Silk Road. Hammersen outlines the history of rugs in the region, dyes, knots and construction and women’s role in weaving.

The Silk Road is an ancient trade route officially established during the Han Dynasty, China. It linked regions together for commerce. The network was used from 130 BCE to 1453 CE. The route predates the Han Dynasty as the Persian Royal Road. While it was a route for commerce it also created a route for exchange of

culture, science, art, technology and language. The name comes from the popularity of Chinese silk traded and coveted by the Roman Empire. Ferdinand Von Richthofen, a German geographer and traveler, coined the term “Silk Road” or “Seidenstrasse” in 1877.

Hunter Hammersen is a knitter and adventurer living in Cleveland, Ohio. She has a number of other knitting books to her credit.

My first stop is always Itsy Bitsy Yarn Store right in town first; they have a fantastic selection of sock yarns available.

I had to stop for a moment,

take a break, knit something simple. But my hands pined for the patterns in Silk Road Socks. I took 2 mm needles, pattern repeats from the book and created some miniature socks! Walking the Silk Road, wow! Well, turning the pages of the book is a start.

An enjoyable read, a fantastic knitting experience, Silk Road Socks is a must for every knitter’s library.
