I

f you were on a committee to provide decorations for a dance, your shopping list will likely include balloons, streamers and crepe... lots of crepe.

But not if you were decorating the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre for the Steampunk Ball 2.0 Tesla Boogaloo.

Instead, you will need polished brass, iron, wood and leather for the cogs and exposed pistons of fantastical machines that are futuristic, yet old-timey.

Or, as Logan Sherk explains it: “Steampunk is the future as imagined by Victorians.”

Sherk is the executive director of YuKonstruct, a Whitehorse organization that brings tools and expertise together for members to bring their imaginations to reality.

People of all ages can usually be found working on the makerspace drafting table, 3D printer, laser cutter, lathe, grinder, etc., etc.

So, with this much imagination, equipment and wherewithal all in one place, the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society asked YuKonstruct to provide the concept and the decorations.

“It will be great,” says Sherk.

“This year we have some new ideas and more funding going into it so we are having a great time.”

Allison Button is organizing the effort this year for YuKonstruct and is excited.

“Last year we just laser cut hundreds of gears for (the Steampunk Ball) and that was the extent of our involvement... although

one set of gears actually moved,” she says. “(The Rendezvous Society) approached us very early on, this year, and asked if we wanted to be even more involved in the concept of the decorations and what we can do.

“We have big, big ideas this year,” she says, savouring the challenge ahead.

Like real steam?

“No, no,” says Sherk sadly.

“Due to fire regulations, there is no steam or fire or anything really fun like that. But we have flying machines and a big steampunk dirigible hanging from the roof; it looks like the Hindenburg with some attachments.

“And a porthole kind of ship/ submarine backdrop for a photo booth.

“And something I am personally working on: it will be a six-foot compass rose with some movement and gears to it.”

Sherk explains that the theme for this year’s Steampunk Ball is “Around the World.” He guesses that the popularity of Steampunk is due to the blending of science fiction and style.

“And there is a touch of class that comes from the Victorian era and then also the actual steam and the gears and mechanical movement,” he says. “It’s a chance to dress up, and yet there is a gritty feel, too.”

In all, this is a two-month project for the members of YuKonstruct. There have been design meetings with Rendezvous organizers and the larger pieces have

been started.

But the big push will be Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20 and 21, from 1 to 4 p.m., at YuKonstruct’s Makerspace at 135 Industrial Road.

Teaming up with Yukon Comic Culture Society, members and non-members will be building the props for the Steampunk Ball for the 8:30 p.m. start, Friday, Feb. 26.

The comic folks will be running the photo booth.

Button says she is looking forward to seeing it all come together.

“It was so amazing seeing all the costumes last year,” she says.

“I couldn’t believe what Yukoners can turn out; I wasn’t expecting that level of enthusiasm.

“I can’t wait to see what they are wearing... I can’t wait to see their reaction to the decorations, but, mostly, I can’t wait to see what they are wearing.”

Sherk wants non-members to know that the makerspace is available to them, too, to build their costumes and props. On Tuesdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Weekly Open House is an opportunity to use the makerspace industrial sewing machine, laser cutters or just about anything else that is needed. And there will be lots of advice available.

Showing Torontonians What’s Happening in Old Crow Museum of Inuit Art displaying photography by youth in Old Crow and Inuvik

“I

t’s an important winter to show this,” says Lauren Williams, collections manager at Toronto’s Museum of Inuit Art. She’s referring to the photography exhibit by Yukon youth, This is Our Arctic, currently on display at the museum.

The photos are the result of youth workshops BYTE held in Old Crow, Yukon Territory, and Inuvik, Northwest Territories. BYTE, short for Bringing Youth Towards Equality, is a Yukon-based youth empowerment organization, focused on experiential workshop programming for northern youth.

For This is our Arctic, BYTE spoke to the kids about climate change, gave them lessons in photography skills and then sent them into their communities to document what they saw.

The resulting photographs show imbedded poles that now stick out of the ground due to melting permafrost. They show a springlike dewy haze on everything, in late fall when temperatures shouldn’t be rising above zero.

There are lakes that should be frozen already, but aren’t. There’s a bicycle sticking out of a deep pool created by melting permafrost.

Having walked into the museum wearing just a few layers, out of a plus 5 degree January day with no snow to speak of – at least 15 degrees above normal Ontario temperatures for this time

of year – it’s eerie to see similar weather oddities reflected among these photographs, taken more than two years ago.

But the exhibit isn’t just about climate change.

“We wanted to allow the youth to have a say on what’s going on in their communities,” says Chris Ryder, BYTE’s Executive Director, who is thrilled to see the exhibit touring the south. “The thing we

really wanted to achieve was to share the stories of the youth of the North. And we want that voice to be seen by as many people as possible.”

Currently showing in Toronto until the spring, the exhibit’s first showing was in the youth wing of the Yukon Arts Centre. It was also previously shown in galleries in Ottawa and Vancouver, and has toured the country in the library system. It’s been consistently on the road since 2013.

For many of the youth, who range in age from 10 to 17, it was their first time turning their lens on their world in this way.

“Essentially we just asked them to share their experience, and they connected with it right away,” says Ryder. “I think the evidence of that is on the walls.”

And he’s right – aside from giving southerners a recognizable glimpse of climate change in a place where it can be most clearly seen, This Is Our Arctic also features some beautiful photography.

One of the photographs, taken by a 10-year-old Inuvik girl, went on to win an award at the Arctic Image Festival.

“I heard through the grapevine she now carries a camera around with her everywhere,” says Ryder.

Most of the people visiting the Toronto gallery won’t have been to the Yukon, but according to Williams, this northern voice Ryder hoped to express is getting across.

“It’s huge to show context,” she says. “It shows people you can just find antlers on the ground, that sewage has to be built above ground – people here wouldn’t even think of that.”

Toronto artist Nicole Liao’s art show in Dawson features the northern lights juxtaposed with testing nuclear bombs

he most recent exhibition at Dawson’s ODD Gallery is nothing if not seasonal for its subject is the northern lights, also called aurora borealis, the light display named jointly after the Roman god of the dawn, Aurora, and the Greek god of the north wind, Boreas.

Nicole Liao’s installation is called Against the Day, which takes its name from a passage in the American novelist Thomas Pynchon’s book of the same name.

In that passage Pynchon describes “an international race to measure and map most accurately the field-coefficients at each point of that mysterious mathematical lattice-work, which was by then known to surround the Earth.”

In the novel, this effort is taking place between the 1880s and the Balkan Wars that preceded World War I. As the exhibit pamphlet notes, “The aurora borealis is in fact a geomagnetic storm. The phosphorescent colours are the result of speeding, high energy particles that travel from the sun and collide with the gases of the earth’s atmosphere.”

For this exhibition, Liao has gone further than Pynchon’s description and put together what she describes as “a photo and video installation composed of found scientific drawings, photographs, models and footage based on early records of auroral research and documented nuclear bomb tests in outer space.”

The video portion of the exhibit includes footage of high altitude detonations of nuclear bombs, exploded in 1962 in an exercise known as Starfish Prime. Shown side by side with footage from the National Film Board documentary called “The Northern Lights,” it is clear that the visual similarities are quite startling.

Another part of the video display juxtaposes a view of an astronaut in a cramped space capsule orbiting the earth, while the matching picture shows land bound humans, bundled in Arctic gear, manning cameras to study the skies.

The natural Aurora contrasted with a light display caused by a high altitude nuclear explosion their extent and determine just how high in the atmosphere they occur. Other photographs show wire models used in the study of the lights, and diagrams – with equations – used in the trigonometric attempts.

In her own notes, Liao writes “The exhibit seeks to understand the aurora borealis in terms of its relation to the science of optics and electromagnetic forces; incidentally, this complex physical and chemical relationship between particles, radiation and light in the aurora is also the nature of the photograph.”

Paired with a light show, this creates a sensation of doubling, which “makes the aurora borealis and its sinister twin ideal subjects with which to explore the technology of the photograph and

the moving image. Like a science fiction film, the double begins to take on an apocalyptic life of its own, independent of time and space, returning again and again to haunt the present.”

The exhibit is complex. You need to spend some time watching the video clips and it’s essential to use the two pages of notes in order to understand the 15 elements of the presentation.

Against the Day will be on display until February 27.

What You Might Not Know About Ducks B perched on a limb.

A diving duck’s legs are well back on their body, which gives them a distinguishing waddle.

These birds are seldom seen on land as everything they need is in the water, with the exception of their nests, which are generally close to the water’s edge.

The legs of pond ducks are well forward on their body, and they are as comfortable on land as they are in the water. This subspecies of ducks can be seen feeding with their heads underwater while the rest of their body remains above the surface. Thus, these ducks are called pond ducks.

If you see a long, slender duck with a beak that looks like a thin pair of wire cutters, you are looking at a merganser, a standout from other ducks. The beak is slender and cylindrical.

If you could look closer, inside the beak, you would notice that the merganser has what looks like teeth slanted backward in its mouth. The closest creature I can compare this beak to is that of a gar pike, which is found in the St. Lawrence River. This pike can actually cut a smaller fish in half. Of course, the beak of the merganser is for catching fish, and they are fast swimmers under water.

Longevity To my knowledge, swans hold the record (in general) for longevity -- 40 years. Geese live about 30 years; and ducks, 20. This, of course, refers to waterfowl kept in sanctuaries, not those in the wild.

When I was stationed in the Erie District of Ontario, we ventured near the base of Niagara Falls to rescue ducks that had been swept over. We took those that survived, but sustained injuries, to bird sanctuaries. The ducks that didn’t survive were taken to research stations.

I had a life-and-death encounter with Niagara Falls, back in 1958, that I will never forget … but that is for another story, maybe for my book that is yet to be finished.

In part 2, we will look at the flight speed of bird species, as well as the altitude that waterfowl fly to, and this might surprise some. We will also dig into history and look at what climate change has done to decimate as well as to improve waterfowl habitats and the waterfowl themselves.

A closing note ...

We live in an era that previous generations could not possibly have conceived of. When a product came to the end of its usefulness, it simply went to a garbage dump, what we now technically call a landfill. In most cases, dumps were habitats for wildlife.

It is now incumbent for manufacturers to not only consider products’ intended use, but to also consider the disposal of these products.

In short, manufacturers must find a concept for their products’

useful end, and they must do so before waste products circumvent what was formerly a serene environment.

Despite the rumours… I have NOT retired!

ack in the early 1960s, I spent a couple of years banding waterfowl in one of the newly-created marshes of the hydro project in Lake St. Lawrence, just west of Cornwall, Ontario. This is when I really got the opportunity to know the many features of waterfowl (duck, geese and swans).

The flooding of the new Lake St. Lawrence has to be the best engineering undertaking to benefit fish and wildlife across Canada, if not in all of North America.

When people pass by a pond and see ducks grazing the surface, few may realize that there is far more to ducks than just birds that spend most of their lives on the surface of water.

Aside from swans and geese (Anatidaes), which are distinguished from other bird species by their mostly broad, flat beaks and webbed feet, there are five subspecies of ducks: pond ducks, diving ducks, mergansers, ruddy ducks; and last but not least, the very interesting tree ducks.

In North America, there are about 14 species of pond and river ducks. Of the diving ducks, there are 21 species. I have seen all such subspecies, with the exception of the Labrador duck, which is extinct.

There are three subspecies of mergansers, one subspecies of the ruddy ducks, and two subspecies of tree ducks. In my 83 years I have had the pleasure of putting leg bands on most of the waterfowl subspecies. It may surprise some that there are approximately 225 species of waterfowl worldwide.

An easy way to tell the difference between pond ducks and diving ducks is in the placement of the legs. Generally, all duck legs are short, with the exception of the tree duck.

Yes, for those who have never seen a tree duck land in a tree or make its nest in a hollow tree, it is a sight to see. We had a pair of tree ducks on our property, back in Ontario. I have a picture of them

Life of a Musician

Vancouver musician Louise Burns was the songwriter-in-residence in Dawson through January

ouise Burns, a Canadian singer-songwriter and former member of the girl band Lillix, just completed a month’s residency in Dawson City as the songwriter in residence.

The Vancouver musician says it was her boyfriend who found the opportunity online.

“I’m always complaining I have no time to write music, so when he saw the opening in Dawson, I thought it would be the perfect chance to explore songwriting and have time to be inspired by the surroundings.”

After looking at the impressive roster of former musicians in residence, she applied and was excited when told she had been accepted for the month of January.

“I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about Dawson,” she says.

Burns has been writing music since she was 11 years old. During high school, she was part of a basement band named Tiger Lily.

In 1997, when she was 15, the band was discovered and signed to a major label: Madonna’s Maverick Records. Burns, and her re-named band Lillix, hit the big time.

“It was an extreme experience,” she says. “We toured North America, Europe, Canada, Japan… it was a hell of a ride.”

She credits her rustic, rural childhood in Cranbrook, BC in helping her stay straight during those crazy times.

“We had chickens, a horse, a garden, and 10 acres,” she says.

“When you’re shovelling manure, you stay grounded.”

But at the age of 19, Burns decided to go solo.

“I had grown up on the road and didn’t know who I was or if I

liked music anymore,” she says of her decision to leave the band. “I needed to find myself.”

Over the next several years, Burns experimented with differ-

ent types of music. Her favourite was girl band style music of the 50s and 60s, but she also tried her hand at punk, indie, folk and country music.

“I love all genres,” she says.

B//urns is releasing her third record this year, and the residency allowed time to write new songs.

It also allowed her to focus.

Burns recognizes that by being versatile in her music, it is difficult to peg her style.

“I guess my brand is created by people drawn to my music,” she says.

She likes to write in a moody style about the darker side of life without being ashamed of it.

A kind of happy/sad genre, she says.

“I like to embrace the dark side. I want to feel things you’re not supposed to feel and say it’s okay.”

She says she can’t explain why sad music makes her happy.

“It makes me feel something. I love all kinds of music, but I really love the contemplative stuff.”

Along with her solo career, Burns is also part of a band, called Gold and Youth, that will soon be putting out their second record.

She also writes music for other musicians, has been a freelance music journalist and an announcer for CBC Radio 3.

And a much as she loves music, Burns admits that being a musician isn’t always financially viable. But she says that back in her Lillix days, she traded music integrity for dollars and is not interested in that now.

“I’m not that kind of performer anymore,” she says. “I know that if I work extra hard, I can make it work.”

t was a beautiful sunny day when we went for lunch at Earls Restaurant. We agreed to meet there at 1 o’clock, but I arrived a bit late. I waited in the lovely broad foyer, wondering if we were eating in the restaurant or the lounge. Either one looked welcoming.

The waiter came to get me and brought me to the restaurant side where my companion was waiting. In a booth with highbacked, upholstered benches that were just perfect for having private conversation. It felt like we were all alone in our own private space.

What fun.

The high ceilings and large windows gave the space the feeling of roominess and the sun shining through the slatted half-open blinds gave an air of warmth and coziness.

The menu offered enough choice, but not so many options that it’s impossible to decide. And certainly a nod to the vegetarian, glutenaware and specialdiet folk among us.

Most dishes were easily adaptable and the restaurant was more than happy to comply. The prices were mid-range and good value.

We got our coffee and tea, each on its own plate with spoons and extras.

My companion got an extra tea bag without asking. We decided to study the menu and order before we got down to visiting.

I ordered the chicken, brie and onion with fig and apple on ciabatta bread and my friend had the bacon cheddar burger with fries. My sandwich came with a choice of sides and I opted for the field greens.

My sandwich was absolutely delicious with the combination of the cheeses, the fruits and the onions melted in my mouth. My salad, even though called simply field greens, was garnished with melted cheese, shaved cheese, grapes, pecans and finely sliced green apple.

My friend’s order was a beautiful tower: colourful layers of bacon, cheese, tomato, onion, pickles and burger on a brioche bun.

I tried my best but I just couldn’t finish the very generous portions. I am not usually one to take home a doggie bag, but I felt I had to respect the delicious food. My solution was to finish the sandwich on site and to take the salad home for later. I am glad I did; it survived the trip home and was one of the best salads I have ever tasted.

Earls is located at 9016 Quartz Road and is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. for either lunch or dinner in either the restaurant or the lounge.

The Casa Magna Colorado has a bold floral taste followed by espresso

D

eep in the Jalapa Valley of Nicaragua grows a tobacco that has an elegant yet bold taste. Combine the tobacco from the Jalapa region with other tobaccos from different areas of Nicaragua and you get a lovely cigar called Casa Magna Colorado.

Created by Manuel Quesada Jr., whose family been making cigars for a century, it’s no surprise that Colorado has been ranked number one cigar on many aficionados lists.

The reason behind the name Colorado is actually quite interesting. If you look closely at the cigar you can see that there are hints of dark red in the tobacco wrapper. Since many of the canyons in Colorado have a dark red colour this was the reason behind calling the cigar Colorado.

To pair with the cigar I have selected Johnnie Walker Red Label blended scotch whisky. I have had this whisky many times before and I’ve always enjoyed it for being smooth yet not too strong. Unlike other scotches, Red Label does not have flavours of fruit. It’s simply a good scotch with a nice malt taste.

To start, Casa Magna Colorado has a bold floral taste. But once you get past that, it takes on a more of a coffee and cedar taste in the first third. And as I predicted,

with cigars and the various flavour wheels will appreciate the direction Colorado has taken.

The last third of the cigar proves to be the strongest, but not in a bad way. There is no bitter taste or chemical taste as some stronger cigars tend to have when you reach the last third. In the case of Colorado the strength of the last third delivers very strong coffee and flower notes.

A d d i t i o n a l l y, the cigar has a bit of a silk like texture, in that the flavour transitions very smoothly and there is no bitterness. This is a good thing when you are looking for a premium cigar.

Although I selected a blended scotch whisky, the Colorado would also go well with a nice dark roast coffee, as well.

And if you prefer drinks are on the PHOTO: Angela Szymczuk sweeter side you could try it with liqueur, too - it depends on which flavours you want to bring out.

For example, to highlight the full body nature of the cigar pair it with scotch. A coffee will enhance the coffee notes in the cigar. The sweetness of a liqueur will offset the strength of the cigar.

Visiting the Glaciers

W

e always said that when the kids were old enough we would take them for an Alaskan kayaking expedition, just like the one we had gone on before the kids were born. So last summer we did just that, and what we learned is that an eight-year-old and a 13-yearold are awesome ages for such a journey, and a year-old bear dog does great too.

The planning of the trip started during the winter, with the detailed study of maps, family meal planning, food dehydrating and

setting aside dates on the calendar that were “set in stone.”

We made the choice to kayak to Harriman Fjord because it offered protected waters and the chance to see a plethora of glaciers. But it also meant driving all the way to Whittier, Alaska, which meant learning that an eight-year-old and a 13-year-old are also fantastic ages for loud, sibling squabbling during road trips.

We made it to Whittier without strangling each other, and we successfully paddled off from

the ferry dock, fully stocked with all the gear the four of us (plus dog) would need for the entire two weeks of kayaking. We had to pack light because we were travelling in one triple kayak and one single kayak. This meant that the centre hatch of our biggest kayak was full of children and dog.

Our goals for the trip were to eat fish, eat prawns, see whales, visit glaciers, get along, not run out of food and to pick berries (but not because we had run out of food). And, amazingly, we met all but one of these goals. We

didn’t see any whales (I am sure you thought it was getting along based on my report of the road trip).

In total we paddled about 170 kilometres in 13 days, learning that 12 kilometres a day was about the right pace with the kids.

The highlight of the trip was camping for three nights amongst the glaciers.

The first day it drizzled rain steadily and we decided to take a rest day, as much as we could rest with the constant sound of

thundering, calving glaciers engulfing us.

On the second day with the glaciers, we left our camp and kayaked deeper into the fjord to get a look at Barry Glacier.

However, over-night, thousands of small icebergs had filled the fjord, which made our journey seem daunting. But we pushed off anyways, letting the boats crunch over the chunks of ice, and laughing at the beauty of the differentshaped ice as we floated by. cont’d on page 13...

As we got closer to Barry Glacier, I could see that it wasn’t the small glacier I had assumed it was from a distance; instead, it was a field of ice that stretched back into the hills further than I could imagine.

As we paddled around at the edge of Barry Glacier, we were often surrounded by two or three speckled seals, their heads only a slightly different shape and colour than the small icebergs.

Before returning to our camp at Coxe Glacier, we crossed the fjord and checked out Cascade Glacier. It seemed like Cascade Glacier calved the most out of the three glaciers in the fjord, and we enjoyed getting closer so we could see the action of the chunks of ice falling into the sea.

There was something about the fjord that made me feel at home. Out in the channel, on the way to and from Whittier, I

felt exposed and a little out of my comfort zone - like I couldn’t quite feel my own skin.

In the fjord, I felt embraced.

It felt darker in the fjord, as if humans weren’t truly welcome.

There was something comforting about this (let’s not analyze that too much).

When not in the fjord, my family and I were blown away by

Other festivities to look out for are the casino in the Yukon Inn’s Fireside Room, the Sugar Shack and annual pancake breakfasts will round out the day hours, and Mt. Sima will be building a mini terrain snowboard park at Shipyards Park.

If you’re feeling competitive, but not enough to throw axes around, the Royal Canadian Legion will be hosting a handful of their own smaller competitions, like a chili contest, crib and horseshoe and Texas hold ‘em.

They’ll also host a few dinner and dance nights.

And of course, a Queen will be crowned, and a Sourdough Sam will be named – two competitions with a very long history.

The Queens, who compete for four months leading up to Rendezvous, have been a part of the festival every year since the Hougen Group of Companies started Rendezvous 52 years ago. The Sourdough Sams are younger, but have still been around for about 30 years.

Blotter estimates the final weekend of Rendezvous attracts up to 20,000 tourists.

The goal with Rendezvous, he says, is to have “something for everyone.”

How do I know when to get NEW TIRES? Every new tire comes with special humps in between the tread blocks known as the wear bars, these bars are used to indicate to the user that the tire has reached 2/32’s of an inch. 2/32’s is considered to be at the end of the tire’s useful life and can no longer safely grip the road, especially in rainy conditions where you will find the tire to likely experience a hydroplane condition.

Therefore if your tires have reached these wear bars your tires are no longer safe to operate and are in need of replacement.

t’s that time of year again, when it’s totally normal to see girls walking around in period costume, when men compete in beauty pageants, when that guy with the really long beard who comes into the restaurant you work at starts talking about the medal he hopes to win.

And this year is no different: the Sourdough Sams will compete in women’s lingerie, the women will compete to be the best axe thrower and everyone will, most likely, have a drink or two.

But there are a few new things.

Here are, as Executive Director Dave Blotter calls them, the top three highlights.

First, big-time fiddler Natalie McMaster is performing at the Thursday night fiddle show .

People were so excited about this that the tickets sold out within a few days.

Also new is Rendezvous’ partnership with the Boys and Girls club, who are revitalizing Kidsfest.

“They’ve more than tripled the amount of activities taking place in Shipyards Park,” Blotter says, “and professional youth workers will be staffing it all day.”

Among these activities are things like the Family Wilderness Survival competition.

The other exciting new event is the East Meets North Kitchen Party, going down in the performance tent the last Saturday of the festival.

“We’ve been aiming for the vibe of an old fashioned East coast kitchen party,” Blotter says. With performers like Kevin Barr from the Yukon and special guest fiddler Donnell Leahy from Ontario, the party will be a touch of Northern music with a touch of Eastern.

“It’ll have an old school East coast feeling to it,” Blotter says.

Due to popular demand the Steampunk Ball is back this year, which, Blotter says, people have been requesting – and working on their costumes for – since it ended

This is Not the Yukon: Life in Southern Ontario with Joslyn Kilborn

Trees I

remember the first time I drove the Skagway Pass. Like a place that time had missed, a prehistoric landscape where plants were still just beginning to grow, though I knew those squat stubborn pines were hundreds of years old.

Trees grow differently on a mountain pass. If you’re from the south you might say that it’s harder for trees to grow up there.

When you compare their growing conditions to the long, warm summers that let southern trees grow tall as buildings, it seems like those mountain trees are facing a serious disadvantage. They will never be as tall, as thick, as magnificent as the trees of the south. They just won’t.

Trees down in Whitehorse face similar, though less dramatic, conditions. Compared to mountain trees, they are huge – slim as your arm but tall and elegant, looming gently over the roof of your house, masking you from your neighbours.

But on the scale of comparison, they don’t have the verdure of the trees of southern Canada.

Returning to the south from the north is like entering an overgrown jungle, trees so big they shock the senses, And it seems so easy for them.

As long as I’ve been alive there have been these giant trees hanging around me, a handful on most suburban blocks, more down by the river, even more at the local park. There aren’t, you know, a

Trees are easy to love ton of them. We have to cut a lot of them down to fit in all the houses and roads and shopping centres we need. But it hardly feels like there is a lack of them.

If you don’t have a giant tree in your front yard, your neighbour does, and it’s big enough to cover half of your lawn too.

When I lived in my Yukon cabin I felt an intimacy with the thin pines that hugged the walls of my home. I looked out my windows

and their tight knit trunks stood solid, my natural fortress. If I climbed into the loft and looked out the skylight, my view was on par with the bushy green down of their needles, and I felt like one of them. Those pines made me feel watched over, taken care of.

One night squatting on an Okanagan beach it began to rain.

I woke as the first drops hit my exposed face and roused the others to run for the nearest tree

– an incomprehensibly humongous weeping willow who bent the arms of her natural umbrella down around us. We instinctively hugged the trunk, curling our sleeping bodies around the thick place it entered the earth, and were dry. In the middle of the night I woke again, opened my eyes and gratefully studied the far-reaching canopy above me.

I felt watched over. I felt taken care of.

This kind of thing couldn’t happen quite the same way with one of those trees on the Skagway Pass – they aren’t big enough to shelter me from anything.

But this doesn’t matter to them.

They keep on at their task, which is to grow, slow and unnoticeable as their progress may be.

Don’t Panic!

Take care of your dog this fireworks season

y dog, Herman, once stepped between myself and a charging two-thousand-pound black Angus bull. He turned the animal back by sheer virtue of his own ferocity and unwillingness to be moved.

On another occasion, he chased off a young male grizzly bear that was stalking myself and my girlfriend as we picked morels in northern British Columbia.

He has ridden shotgun in my canoe as it rushed down the Yukon River and sat patient and quiet under my seat as we rode the subway together through downtown Toronto. He has always guarded myself and my things and has stopped two separate break and enter attempts.

He once killed a milk snake – an aggressive reptile native to Southern Ontario – with a painful, although only moderately poisonous bite, when it attempted to strike him. He snatched it up his in jaws and shook it so ferociously that it snapped in two.

When he was very small I used to take him with me on my motorcycle by tucking him into my leather jacket and zipping him up inside, so he could ride face-in against me, a fact which he seems to still recall, as he becomes excited whenever he sees a parked motorcycle to this day.

He is nearly six now, and throughout the years he has never been the perfect dog, but he has always been unfailingly loyal and brave to the point of stupidity.

And yet, despite being what one might call “a dog’s dog,” the sound of fireworks or gunfire will reduce him to a quivering, whimpering, neurotic mess, shivering and hiding his head under my arm or crawling under the bed and refusing to be moved. Recently,

over the New Year’s holiday, we were accidentally outside for a walk - due to my own carelessness of the time - when the fireworks went off. His terror was so great that he ran in the bushes, dug a hole under a tree in the snow right down to the dirt, and refused to be moved. I only found him because he had a collar light, and when I did, I had to scoop him up like a baby and carry him home.

This is not an uncommon fear among dogs - after each session of fireworks, there are numerous reports among dog owners of dogs going missing - and it can be a very serious problem, causing serious anxiety, destructive behaviours or for dogs to disappear.

When frightened by loud noises, a dog can be, “disoriented for days, running and running, because they are scared… Most people with nervous dogs can expect their dogs to react quite a bit, but even calm dogs can react to loud noises,” says veteran-dog trainer Erika Rozsa-Atkinson.

Rozsa-Atkinson is the owner of the Whitehorse dog training school Canines and Company.

Owners should keep their dogs on a long leash when going out at times when triggers – fireworks, gunfire or thunderstorms – might be present, and not leave them outdoors unattended. When a dog is frightened, she says, it’s important not to comfort them (no matter how much you might want to) because this simply reinforces their belief that there is something to be afraid of.

“It’s very important that you remain calm and do not get anxious yourself,” Rozsa-Atkinson notes. “Anxious owners project their anxiety on the dog and escalate the behaviour.”

Herman is terrified of fireworks, thunderstorms and gunfire, but not snakes, bears, drowning or charging bulls. Go figure remain relaxed and keep your pet someplace safe with you. If the dog is having serious issues, she says, such as when anxiety becomes unbearable or they are visibly suffering from such fears, an owner might want to consider mild sedatives for the duration of specific, foreseeable events, such as fireworks.

Thundershirts – a product that squeezes an anxious dog tightly in order to help reduce their anxiety – may be effective, although Rozsa-Atkinson says it is effective in only about 35 per cent of cases.

Treatment aside, preventing these panicked episodes is actually more important than dealing with them when they occur, says Rozsa-Atkinson, because it can take weeks for the dog to fully recover.

Plenty of exercise prior to an event like fireworks will help a dog cope, she notes, because a healthy, physically and mentally fit dog is better prepared to deal with stress.

So, why do some dogs react to loud, unexpected noises in such a panicked way, while others are totally non-plussed? Rozsa-Atkinson says that sometimes it is often a matter of the environment a dog encounters as a young puppy, or caused by genetic factors, but every dog is different.

“Dogs react to anything they perceive as danger. Your dog looks to you for guidance and needs to trust you,” she says.

She adds that often times dog owners go online looking for a solution to their problems, and that while often good advice can be found there, it may not work for every dog, nor be appropriate for your dog or situation.

“It’s important that people remember that dogs are living beings, not things that can be fixed by a google search,” she says.

This year’s Rendezvous fireworks are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22 at 8:20 pm at Shipyards Park. While this is a fun event for people, it can be terrifying for

pets, so if you have a dog, please remember to keep him or her safe and comfortable this weekend.
