The Atlin Whisper

“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.”

A Story with a Happy Ending

On March 22 we went for a solo snowmachine ride south, down Atlin Lake, and unfortunately ended up bogged down in overflow near Caribou Island in the late afternoon.

We had borrowed an Enreach from our son, Ryan Osborne, but our limited tech skills resulted in us not able to get out a message that way. On the off chance that we could get a signal, we sent a text message by phone to Ryan, saying we were stuck, but were rewarded with an “Out of Range” message.

So, we packed up all our safety gear, put on our snowshoes, and started back along our snowmachine trail, with the hopes that our message would get through when we reached 12 Mile.

Somewhere along our trek, our text message went through and, as it was getting late, Ryan quickly gathered up a snowmachine (borrowed from Jim Lamberton) and 3 more hearty souls (Scott Odian, Gary McNeil, and Brian Hanslit) and their machines, to help rescue his stranded parents. Fortunately for us, Ryan had set our Enreach before we left, so he knew where to find us.

Sometime around 6pm we saw a line of lights approaching us and shortly after were greeted with big grins from our four rescuers and we returned what were likely even bigger grins! They gave us Jim’s snow machine to head back to town and then took off to rescue our machine from the overflow.

We made it back with no further mishaps and were surprised when Ryan pulled up to our home no more than 10 or 15 minutes later on our machine. Mission accomplished!

Our heartfelt “thanks” goes out to our rescuers, who, in true Atlin spirit, insisted this was a great way to spend a sunny afternoon, and to Jim Lamberton, who lent his snowmachine to Ryan to help out! Without their help, we would have had a rather miserable night out in the elements.

While we did have some survival gear with us to help if we needed to overnight, we did learn a few lessons:

Don’t go snowmobiling on the lake alone. Always go with another snowmachining buddy!

Pay attention to signs of overflow! (We now know what that feels like!)

And… learn to use the Enreach before leaving and then bring it with you!

Thanks yet again, guys. - Deb and Steve Osborne

The Garden of Forgiveness

After years of estrangement, sisters Lena and Sarah reunited in the garden they had once tended together as children.

Over Easter, they planted tulips and lilies side by side, talking openly about past grievances and forgiving one another.

The blooming flowers symbolized their renewed bond, a living testament to rebirth, healing, and the transformative power of forgiveness, echoing the spiritual essence of Easter.

“From Winter to Spring”

When Winter ends and Spring begins residents will still have some frigid temperature as their companion.

They’ll hear the stress and weariness along with labored breathing coming in whispers from their trees.

Then, over the next two months people, pets and trees alike will start to feel Spring’s easing.

If residents listen carefully they’ll hear trees issue sighs of relief and hints of hope for more warmth.

When Spring fully embraces them trees will serenade residents with tales of their endurance and those of joyful renewal.
