The Atlin Whisper

“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.”

Be prepared and stay safe: tips for wildfire season

Summer is just around the corner. With it comes the potential for wildfires. Now is the time to get prepared and understand what to do before, during and after a wildfire.

Prepare your home

There’s no better time than now to FireSmart your home and property Complete the FireSmart home assessment to find out what changes will make the biggest difference in lowering your home’s wildfire risk. Learn more at FireSmartBC.ca or contact Dani McNeil in Atlin at 867-335-2557.

Research insurance coverage

Home insurance policies in British Columbia cover fire damage and losses. Discuss your coverage with your insurance representative. You can also contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada at 1-844-227-5422.

Disaster Financial Assistance is not available for losses due to wildfire, so it is important to make sure you have the right insurance coverage in place.

Stay informed

During a wildfire, follow these trusted sources for up-todate information:

• EmergencyInfoBC.ca

• BCWildfire.ca

• And follow @EmergencyInfoBC on X

Learn about what happens during an evacuation, including what happens before, during and after an Evacuation Order is issued.

Make an emergency plan

Having a plan helps keep you and your family safe. Learn more at PreparedBC.ca/Wildfires and make your emergency plan at PreparedBC.ca/EmergencyPlan

When you only have the portrait

His warm embrace is gone

When you only have the portrait

His voice fades away

When you only have the portrait

I love you is never heard

When you only have the portrait

The keys are never played

When you only have the portrait

The tools are never used

When you only have the portrait

The conversation is not heard

When you only have the portrait

No one greets you at the door

When you only have the portrait

There's no footprints in the snow

When you only have the portrait

The tractor remains still

When you only have the portrait

Even the dog is forlorn

When you only have the portrait

Memories will have to do

I'm so grateful for the portrait

And the memories too!

Life was too short

Forever missed!

“The

Salt of The Earth”

There are some in the community and others in our extended family who are the salt of the earth and can always be counted on.

We look up to them as models, treasured gifts and for inspiration. We keep them in our heart.

They won’t toot their own horn about being old-fashioned honest or how they stand up for justice.

We should tell their stories to the young ones who follow us so, they’ll have examples of people to look to as the salt of the earth and who they may wish to emulate.

Save the Date: May 10

The Whitehorse community choir to perform at the Globe Theatre. The Museum opens for the Season. Details to follow.

Trust Leap

She stands all alone

Peering down

Into the deep, dark unknown.

Fear grips her

As she clings to the familiar Not daring to let go.

Fear wants her to freeze

To do nothing

To remain immobile, Stuck in paralysis.

Somehow though, Summoning the courage Deep Deep within She lifts one foot Slowly And steps forward

One Small Step…

...and she is in freefall…

At first there’s nothing, Nothing But fear

The great void

And the utter silence of deep space. She falls through space…….

She faces fear in the face… And the lifeline holds!

And she lives

And she goes on living

Stronger than ever before

Flying High pianissimo, solenne/grave

I hold you

For the very, last, time

I hold you tight For I will never, see you, again For a long, long, time

I cradle you in my arms And I look into your face

And for the first time Since you were a child You are at peace

Total, utter, peace

Your body is here

But your spirit, is soaring Your soul, has risen

You are at peace You are with God

Creator made you And back to Creator you have returned

God is Love

You are now in the cradle of love

And you are at peace

And I, have some degree, of closure

And thus, some degree of peace
