The Atlin Whisper
“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world.”
Margaret Mead

“Keep
On Giving”
You emit a glow showing love inside.
When you are ready let it flow freely from the sweet gift of you’re inner rainbow.
No sense in hiding love or denying it’s there or trying to hold it, for yet another day.

When you keep on giving, more love comes your way …and will keep on coming.
Jeff Salmon
2nd Atlin Cross Country Run
This past October 3, 2024, during a nice refreshing sunny Thursday, student athletes ran the tough terrain alongside and on Monarch Mountain! Carcross athletes from grades 7 to 9 participated alongside the Atlin athletes. Chased by community members, Christine Blake (2 km), Leandra Brient (3 km), and Jen Stronge (5 km); they ran behind the last runner of each category to ensure each athlete completed the course safely. These student athletes and community support runners, ran through the long rocky, stump filled trails and at times swampy patches up and down the mountain.
Young runners started the day with the 2 km run, followed by the 3 km Boys, then 3 km Girls, and the final event, 5 km Girls run. Results: 2 Km Boys: Jayden Law (1st), Jacob Blake (2nd), and Bogomil Dimitrov (3rd). 2 Km Girls: Darina Dimitrova (1st), Miles Catli (2nd), and Hannah Colwell (3rd), 3 Km Boys: Aydri Mosquera (1st) – Carcross, Levi Calhoun (2nd) – Carcross, Jonny Lojang (3rd) – Carcross. 3 Km Girls: Shelby Ewing (1st), Adele Colwell (2nd), and Rena Colwell (3rd), and 5 Km Girls: Abi Ewing (1st), Jana Lojang (2nd) –Carcross, and Annebelle Bellencourt (3rd) – Carcross.
What a successful day! Thank you to the community members and the Atlin School staff who came out to support these young athletes by acting as observers, time recorders, registration check-in, concession support, and the cheering squad! Way to go K-3 class! Excellent job with the goodies, concession team! The fire was a warming idea! Also, a big thank you to the people who came out to cheer for the athletes. Special recognition goes out to Bart and Karin de Haas. The Atlin Cross Country Run happened because they provided the athlete training, ensured trails were in shape with help of Tisha Ewing and Chris Blake, marked the trails, helped organize the days’ events, race day setup, and provided key support throughout the race. After the run, community volunteers helped remove trail markers to make sure that only footprints were left behind. Bart, Karin, and Ms. M were the team that provided this opportunity to our youth. Thank you once again to all who came to make this a day to remember; to the athletes and coaches (Atlin and Carcross), the Atlin School students, the community members, and the school staff.
This was an Atlin Team effort!

Atlin Goldfields Past, Present and Future.
By Clive Aspinall, P.Eng.
Geologist /APMA Member. 15th October 2024

The price of gold today is $US 2,674.10/oz…which translates into $CDN 3,677.69/oz…almost the highest it’s ever been in recorded history. The highest was $US 2685.24 a month ago.
Where have all the Atlin miners gone? As far as I can make out…this past summer there were only 5 local teams working Otter, 2 men team working Pine, 2 teams of 2 working McKee….for a total of 11 miners.
In 2016 Season…I counted 90 miners working on Atlin Creeks, 30 of whom were Atlin residents including 2 First Nations. And the price of gold in 2016 was $US 1,251.92 which at todays exchange rate would be $CDN 1,727.67.
The price of gold today is more than twice as high as 2016…while the Atlin miners actually working this past season is down by 90 %!!
This situation not only hurts Atlin men and women wanting to work close to home, but also must hurt the local economy, namely the 2 Atlin stores and one gas station. In the coming weeks, I wish to investigate the reasons for this down turn with discourse in this paper.
