“Fall” There’s a chilliness in the air, at times even an iciness.

Par for the course this time of year that some find exhilarating.

Many find beauty in this season and cherish its precious gifts.

They will relish brisk walks outdoors followed perhaps by a brandy, home cooking and time with a friend.

Some find the coziness of home perfect for hobbies or projects, or trying out new recipes.

While others prefer a good read as they snuggle under a quilt.

Fall offers changes in coloring, lighting and the scenery; Some are dramatic, some more subtle.

The change of seasons is a gift to help us see treasures year ‘round.

THE CLASSICAL JOINT Andreas Nothiger

by Paul Lucas Closer to home, the Vancouver of my youth also had funk in abundance.

Along with all those downtown dives and show clubs, there were plenty of jazz and blues clubs in the city - The Cellar, the Flat Five, the Blue Horn, the Living Room. These clubs were on the circuit, and all kinds of major names came to play there - Charlie Mingus, Bill Evans, Gary Burton, Oscar Peterson - all of em, including many of my guitar heroes - Joe Pass, Howard Roberts, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, and Wes Montgomery. And there were plenty of places for an aspiring jazz guitarist to learn his trade. One in particular comes to mind though, and it is the very definition of funk - the ‘Classical Joint.’

The Joint was located in the heart of Gastown, but not the yuppie Gastown of today - the old Gastown, before it’s gentrification. It was much closer to the bone. I played there many times, over several years and in various configurations, often with my old pals Torben Oxbol and Buff Allen. One of my favourite combinations though, was the guitar/bass duo.

Guitarists have a special relationship with bassists. If guitar and bass are playing in the zone, it’s like listening to the right and left hands of a piano player with chops and complete independence. It’s great fun. I had a regular Tuesday night at the Joint with Torben and occasionally, Lincoln Goines. It was the perfect setting.

--The Classical Joint was founded in 1970 by Andreas Nothiger, an emigre from Switzerland, whose life path evidently demanded he create an entirely bohemian establishment, where birds of a questionable feather could gather, play chess, discuss philosophy and listen to live Jazz.

The place was always packed. Or so it seemed. It could only hold 90 or so people, and that was pushing it. The bylaws in ungentrified Gastown at the time must have been lax, because in that crowded space, all manner of infractions were taking place.

The electrical appeared to have been installed shortly after Edison invented alternating current; yet there they were - guitar, bass and p.a. amplifiers - all plugged into the same power bar, along with a toaster and a hotplate as far as I knew. I don’t recall seeing a fire exit other than the front door. Not that it mattered much. In the event of a fire, my fellow bohemians were probably as likely to get trampled as they were to get burned.

And speaking of fire, there were lit candles all over the place. Smoke hovered in the air. Some of it from the candles, some of it from cigarettes, but a lot of it from pot smoke, and much of that from the back room - where the real funk lived. This is where we took our breaks, where we sat sucking back ‘darks,’ the code name for coffee with a shot of liquor. The place was unlicensed, but you could always get a dark with a nod and a wink.

The Joint closed in 1988 after eighteen years of being a second home for many of us. I think I speak for every Jazz player who came through the place when I say, ‘Thanks Andreas, for all those years supporting the music. Live long and prosper.’

Dear Supporters, Now that I am fully moved out of the Globe Theatre and have had a couple weeks to digest this new chapter, I wanted to reach out and thank everyone who supported me through this wonderful journey of programming the Historic Globe Theatre. It has been an amazing experience and a true labour of love for me. THANK YOU In the past few weeks I have started the process of applying for grants to help keep programming happening in Atlin.

Currently, I am also working on securing other venue options to continue programming events over the winter. Due to the workload of hauling equipment to make the events a success, without a permanent location, I will not be able to maintain the volume of programming I have accomplished so far but will keep going as best I can.

Many people have been asking about the relationship of my lease at the Globe Theatre so I will try and share.

There was an event every week, hosting over 100 music events and in total over 300 events. The events drew hundreds of visitors to Atlin plus gave residents an opportunity to go out for a few hours at a reasonable price and in most cases as an alcohol free environment.

Here is a recap of the main accomplishments over the past 5 and a half years that my supporters and audience helped make happen.

The first major accomplishment, Dennis (Joe) Beaudoin volunteered his time and expertise and got the Theatre heat turned back on after 10 years.

Through my targeted fundraising efforts, 2018 a new boiler system was installed – cash and the boiler were raised, ongoing fundraising for heating oil to keep the building warm and viable year round, restoring the theatre piano to working order.

By reinvesting revenues, I was able to pay lease payments, utilities, and the difference of the heating oil bill not raised through fundraising, purchase a new projector so we could hook up to computers, invest in a high end audio and video recording system, and of course pay the performers.

Along with volunteering all my time to the project, I further volunteered hours to improve the building. Installing strips of carpeting under theatre seats so they would slide with ease and stop the permanent damage the floor received prior to my tenure, replacing the carpet in the green room, stripping and waxing the floors – twice, fixing heat leaks in all 7 windows, installing non slip material on the stage ramp.

Most recently, June 20 – Aug 31, 2023 I moved my office into the theatre so I would be available to show the building to visitors, in that time, I showed the Globe Theatre to more than 150 people.
