YCC has on staff an Employer Advisor. His name is Mal Malloch. His job is to help employers with any questions or issues they may have related to workers’ compensation or health and safety. Mal works for the chamber and is at arm’s length from the Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board (YWCHSB).

These services are available, free of charge, to any employer in the Yukon. Mal also travels to rural Yukon on a regular basis to meet employers in the communities. He will be in most or all rural communities over the next several months. If you have a question or concern that you would like to discuss in person in your community, or if you would just like Mal to visit you and tell you more about the service, please contact him at the phone number or email address above. Yukoners want more efficient energy. A 2014 poll of Yukon residents found that 94% of Yukoners tried to conserve energy whenever possible. 71% said they followed issues, developments, and current events in the energy industry regularly. Those responses are significantly higher than the Canadian average.

Even though most electricity in Yukon comes from renewable sources today, a significant number of remote communities are still separated from the energy grid and depend on shipped-in diesel to survive. Efficiency and conservation in our energy use is important – it means keeping to our emissions reduction commitments, taking care of the environment, and reducing waste.

Environmental consciousness has been sweeping the nation, and Canadians, for the most part, are increasingly concerned about climate change and the effects of uncontrolled greenhouse gas emissions. Yukon has a very important role to play. As a major per-capita consumer of fuels like gasoline and diesel, we have an obligation to maximize efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions as much as we can.

However, acting to slow Yukon’s emissions doesn’t mean curtailing economic growth. The biggest sector contributing to Yukon’s total GHG and CO2 emissions is transportation. Our territory is vast and getting around requires gasoline, diesel, or aviation fuel. All of that is imported.

As we have always noted, reliable, affordable electricity, dependable heating, and efficient energy for transporting people and products allows an economy to thrive. Prosperity has massive impacts on the lives of residents, and more than anything, Yukoners deserve well-paying jobs, educational opportunities, and an improved quality of life, This applies particularly people in small communities who don’t want to be forced to leave for a lack of prospects.
