Fish Fact: Como Lake was last stocked on June 25, 2019. The lake received 4,000 female triploid Rainbow Trout (Blackwater River strain). Triploid rainbow trout are named triploid because they possess three sets of chromosomes which render them sterile. Since they do not spawn, all their growth potential goes to body size as opposed to producing eggs or milt.

ON THE ROAD ‘It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary’ Travel in the North often involves challenging conditions and long distances. If you are a musician, you become as familiar with both as any trucker. The farthest I have driven for a gig to date is 766 miles (1233 km) - a driving time of just over 17 hours. Of course that’s in perfect driving conditions. Otherwise, it could take ... well ... who knows how long it could take. As they say in the trucking business, ‘It depends.’

If you are lucky enough to be travelling with your pals, the time flies on by. Many of these trips though, I have driven solo. And that’s when time can turn fluid. In fact, rather than diddling around with energy, mass and the speed of light to determine the flexibility of time, Einstein could have simply driven down the Alaska, Stewart-Cassiar and Yellowhead Highways to Terrace B.C. Carting his mass down 766 miles of bad highway would have saved a lot of that time and energy as well as plenty of paper. And if he managed to get his truck up to the speed of light on the way ... well ... all the better.

The long haul drivers of this world find lots of ways to utilize time spent behind the wheel.

Music is good. Talking books are even better. Still, plenty of that time is spent just daydreaming. What follows is a story about one of those solo trips - a trip that involved plenty of daydreaming.

ON THE ROAD I Alaska Hwy.Enroute-Ft Nelson. It was an early afternoon on a snow-clogged Alaska Highway, and I was half way to a gig in Fort Nelson in my little station wagon with questionable tires.

It had decided to snow, and the visibility was somewhere between marginal and crap. I slowed at a corner and spied three trailer trucks in a pull-off putting on chains. It wasn’t a good sign. Still, I had the weight and that front wheel drive, and I didn’t have chains anyway, so short of pulling off the highway and building myself a snow cave for the remainder of the winter, I figured I might as well plug on.

This was one of the longer hauls for northern musicians - 590 miles (950 km), and definitely not as the crow flies. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the Alaska highway during the Second World War to facilitate shipments of personnel and materiel to Alaska during the war with the Japanese.

As the story goes, the road featured an endless, and seemingly needless, series of twists and curves, the idea being that it would prevent the strafing of convoys by Japanese

aircraft. This may or may not be true, the terrain being difficult enough all by itself.

Then again, it was the army, and it does sound like one of their plans. .

Driving in a blizzard can be a mind altering experience. It can really mess up your sense of ‘up, down and sideways,’ and it takes a lot of concentration to stay on the road, particularly when the road is unplowed and blends into the rest of the big white world out there.

Pilots deal with this sort of situation all the time. Many a pilot has come out of a cloud bank upside down because he mis-read the aircraft’s attitude and adjusted according to instinct. At least that’s what Howard Damron (my pilot pal of ‘perspective’ fame from an earlier tale) said when we were driving down this same highway the previous winter.

— At the time, I was going berserk trying to figure out where I was with reference to anything. On an unplowed road with the snow blowing across the windshield at a devilish angle, I couldn’t figure out where the road ended and the ditches began.

“Howie,” I grunted, “I don’t think I can drive in this crap. Should we pull over?”

“Nah,” he said. “Let me give it a shot.”

We changed seats, and Howard pulled out from the shoulder, lit up a cigarette, cracked the wrapper of one of his favourite candy bars (an Oh Henry as I recall), and unscrewed the top of his thermos. “Coffee?” he chirped with that little raised eyebrow thing he always did.

Pilots are a little like surgeons. It takes a lot to put them in a flap.

— My mind snapped back to the task at hand. At my current pace, it was going to take a while to get to Fort Nelson. Fortunately, the snow ceased as quickly as it had started, and I found myself looking out over an unbroken mantle of white. Not a track in sight. The cover wasn’t thick – about three inches – and the temperature was dropping again, so it looked like I might still have reasonable traction. But it wasn’t going to be fun.

Atlin Historical Society Celebrating 50YEars

Trivia Contest Atlin Historical Society (AHS) is celebrating 50 years as a non-profit society. The society is dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing the history of Atlin. It’s important that future generations learn and understand the land and people of the Taku River Tlingit, the run for gold and the fortitude of the people who came and stayed.

Contest Guidelines o For ages 8 to 18 o Contest will begin July 1 and end August 12 o A question about the history of Atlin will be provided on Friday of each week. Copies of weekly questions will be available at the Museum. Answers must be submitted back to the museum no later than Friday of the next week. Kids must personally pick up their own questions and drop them off. (You may not all be handed the same question!) o Weekly prizes will be given to everyone who answered the question correctly. Your names will be entered into a draw for the Grand Prize which will be drawn on August 13. o The more weeks you enter the contest the more chances you have to win the Grand Prize! o Hints will be given each week to help you find the answer. We encourage kids to try to find the answer on their own but it is understood that some minimal and necessary help will be needed from adults, especially for younger students.

Atlin Historical Society Patricia Kother Dog Costume Parade Patricia was dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Atlin. Her other passion was dogs. She loved having dogs in her life. She also shared her love of dogs by showing her concern for the wellbeing of all dogs. Every dog in Atlin knew Patricia and her Jeep.

Patricia would be thrilled if she knew we were planning a Dog Costume Parade. That’s why we are naming it in memory of her. This parade is open to owners and dogs of all ages.

This event will be held in the Tarahne ball diamond directly after the Atlin Parade. You are welcome to enter the Atlin Parade which starts at 11:00 from the Rec Centre. Just be watchful that your dog isn’t stressed from heat or excitement. Water dishes will be provided at the ball diamond.
