Atlin School Enjoys Success at Whitehorse High School Track and Field Day Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Atlin School entered and participated in the Whitehorse High School Track and Field running events. Prior to the competition, coach Bart de Haas helped prepare the high school class with running skills development during gym class (with Ms. M). From this group, four students participated in the afterschool running practices: Gr. 8 Hunter Hanslit, Gr. 10 Luke Wesley and Jarin Tizya, and Gr. 11 Izaiah Carlick. Following weeks of preparation, Hunter Hanslit ran first in the 100 m qualifier, finished second in the 400 m run final and third in the 100 m final (Gr. 8 Boys). Luke Wesley finished first in 100 m qualifier, first in 400 m run final, and first in 100 m final in Junior Boys (Gr. 9 and 10) (a very close race – officials needed to refer to the video to determine the winner!). Luke also joined a group of runners to compete in the 4 x 100 m relay and the group placed fourth. The school plans to continue developing the running team in the next school year with hopes of expanding the age group range to include some of the elementary grades. Initial hopes include organizing a high school cross country run in the fall, inviting the southern Yukon high school athletes. Stay tuned.
