n the summers between my years at the University of Lethbridge I would come home and work at the Yukon Transportation Museum (YTM). I sold trinkets in the gift shop, gave tours to visitors, went disc golfing at lunch, napped underneath the train exhibit, put a tip-jar at the museum entrance and generally relished my low level of responsibility; it was a perfect summer job.

In those years CF-CPY (the DC-3 weathervane) was not on its current pedestal in front of the YTM because it had been taken down for refurbishing. Instead, it was stored in the giant warehouse at the back end of the museum.

On weekends a group of volunteers (mostly men, well past middle-age) would let themselves in and spend a few hours polishing and painting the old aircraft. But when they weren’t there I was allowed to show-off the airplane to curious travelers. It was the best part of my job.

Typically these travelers would engage me in the gift shop, with information from an old guidebook. The interactions were comforting in their predictability. “We heard that there’s some sort of DC-3 weathervane around here,� they would say. “Well normally it would be outside on a pedestal with its nose facing into the wind, but unfortunately it has been taken down for repairs,� I’d reply.

This rarely failed to produce a change of facial expression — from boyish enthusiasm to worldweary acceptance. I’d let the disappointment sink in for a few seconds (I liked the dramatic effect) before continuing with fauxreluctance. “Well, actually, it’s being stored in our garage at the back

Eager nods and broad smiles all-round.

I would lead them back, throw open the doors to the warehouse and watch as their jaws dropped.

There was always a moment of silence before the stories started to flow; it turns out that everyone over the age of 60 has a DC-3 tale to tell. Here’s a typical anecdote: “I flew to California in one of those things back in ’54. We went right through a storm and I thought the damn thing was going to fall out of the sky.�

No doubt CF-CPY also flirted with disaster on occasion, but the difference between it and many other DC-3s is that between the late 1950s and 1970, when it flew its last flight, CF-CPY serviced Northwestern Canada, one of the most remote regions on Earth.

Due to a lack of infrastructural support, the history of aviation in the Yukon is a history of incredibly brave and ingenious men and women who used all available tools and heroic doses of creativity to solve problems as they arose. There was no other option.

CF-CPY (now back on the pedestal) is a fitting tribute to our

aviation tradition because the qualities of creativity and ingenuity that were so entrenched in our early aviators were the exact same qualities that a group of airplane buffs utilized to turn an old relic into the world’s largest weathervane. It was first erected in 1981.

In the summer of 2012, when YTM curator Casey McLaughlin announced plans to yarn bomb the DC-3 (which basically involved putting a patchwork sweater over its fuselage and wings), the idea was met with grumblings of dissent.

I can understand this — after all, to the uninitiated yarn bombing is a weird and hippyish art form.

But if you dig a little bit deeper you will see that the exact same qualities that were present in our early aviators and then again in those who envisioned the airplane as a giant weathervane were also present in the team that wrapped CF-CPY in blankets.

The yarn bombing of August 2012 was not the death knell of Yukon aviation history, but rather a singular affirmation that the spirit of creativity and ingenuity remain alive and well in our territory.

Comedians take their new show for a spin around the Yukon

our Whitehorse comedians are putting their stand-up routines to a rigourous test this month. They’re aiming for laughs, and if they get silence, or coughs, they’ll know they’ve got to continue tweaking their show.

“It’s good to have audiences, because you know instantly if the joke works,” George Maratos says.

He’s one quarter of the comedy troupe Yukon Gold Comics and they’ll be performing their new show A Grizzly Took My Bébé in Haines Junction on Friday and in Whitehorse next week.

Having watched plenty of comedy himself, Maratos knows the discomfort of watching a comedian’s jokes bomb.

“Bad comedy is really hard to watch – especially for friends who come out to see you,” Maratos says.

But if friends laugh, their laughs are real laughs, so says Jenny Hamilton, Maratos’ friend.

She’s also a member of the Yukon Gold Comics, along with Steve McGovern and Claire Ness.

“A friend can’t fake a laugh three times in a row,” she says.

So friends are one of the tests a comedian can use to gauge a show. But the real test is someone who doesn’t even like you.

“There was a guy that came to see our XXXmas Comedy and Burlesque Show (on Dec. 28) and he came up to us after and said, ‘Wow, I haven’t seen you guys in, like, a year – you’re really good. I thought you were going to suck,’” Hamilton recounts. “So, we’ve come a long way.”

The troupe found out in the summer that they had been accepted to perform at the Adelaide Fringe in Australia and since then they’ve been fundraising and working on new material to perform.

They’re still fundraising – they’ve got $30,000 of the $50,000 needed – but their show is now ready.

A Grizzly Took My Bébé features the different comedic styles of Hamilton, Maratos, McGovern and Ness, with each performer stepping into the spotlight individually for 15 minutes.

“I do songs, musical comedy and character pieces,” Ness says, with Maratos interjecting, “… that are hilarious.”

Maratos is pleased to be part of a troupe that is genuinely funny.

“It feels good to sit back and watch and know there’s a good energy and the jokes are funny,” Maratos says. “So it’s pretty exciting to be involved. You can be confident taking the show to the (Adelaide) festival knowing that people have put a lot of time into it.”

The Yukon Gold Comics have been giving the new show a testrun in the Yukon, starting in Dawson City and Watson Lake in early January.

The upcoming shows in Haines Junction and Whitehorse will feature seasoned Australian comedian Michael “Mickey D” Dwyer performing the second hour, which is a treat for local audiences and a giant boost for Hamilton, Maratos, McGovern and Ness. While Mickey D is in the Yukon as part of The Guild’s lineup of presentations, he will mentor the troupe, helping them cut out elements from their show that don’t work in general,

and won’t work in Australia, in particular.

Funded by The Guild, his visit is part of the support that the Yukon Gold Comics have been receiving from the community, helping them reach their goal of participating in the Adelaide Fringe, which, by the way, has a purse of $27,000 that will be awarded to the winning participants.

The Yukon Gold Comics have also been receiving support in the form of financial donations.

They’re grateful to be more than halfway towards their goal, but still need to raise $20,000.

“And we’ll take change, anything that jingles – it adds up,” Hamilton says.

The Yukon Gold Comics are performing their new show A Grizzly Took My Bébé in Haines Junction on Jan. 25 at the St. Elias Convention Centre. The next day, they’ll be teaching two youth workshops on Jan. 26: improv at 10 a.m. and clowning at 11 a.m.

Their Whitehorse shows are at The Guild Hall Theatre on Jan. 30 and 31 at 8 p.m., with two shows on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The Adelaide Fringe runs Feb. 15 to March 17.

Dancing on the Tables

Matt Minglewood plays the Jarvis Street Saloon Feb. 1 & 2

A

few days before flying to Whitehorse, Matt Minglewood will be in Toronto accepting a Maple Blues Award for lifetime achievement as a bluesman.

The eclectic Cape Breton singer-songwriter could just as easily be picking up honours for his work in such genres as country, rock, roots, or folk music.

“I’ve never been one to be pigeon-holed and not explore a kind of music just because it’s not expected of me,” Minglewood says. “I play music for music’s sake, I don’t play it for fame and fortune. I do what I want to do.”

After a dozen albums (three of which went gold), plus an honourary doctorate and a lifetime on the road that has included performing for the United Nations in Afghanistan and the “Legends of the NHL” across Canada, Minglewood has scaled down his touring schedule.

“I don’t do the big, long threemonth tours any more, on the bus all day going from one end of the country to the other,” he says.

“I’ll do one-offs like this western trip, which is three weeks. I don’t mind that at all.”

when he sang two Gaelic songs his grandfather had taught him.

“I had no idea what I was saying. He taught me how to sing them phonetically.”

Nearly 61 years later, Mingle-

wood still doesn’t speak his ancestral language — “just the curse words,” he admits.

“My mother and grandmother spoke Gaelic whenever they didn’t want the kids to know what they were saying,” he recalls with a chuckle.

Surrounded by noted Celtic musicians such as Buddy McMaster, Minglewood took up the fiddle at the age of six. He later moved on to piano before adopting the guitar in Grade 9.

Many of his early influences came from country singers he heard on radio, such as Marty Robbins.

“Living in Cape Breton, we got a lot of New York stations that would come in at night clear as a bell, so we got a lot of rhythm and blues and stuff like that.”

Seeing Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan Show introduced Minglewood to a musical style that would have a particular resonance for him.

“And that led me to guys like Chuck Berry, and led me to the blues. You’re influenced by everything you hear.”

The four-piece Matt Minglewood Band — including Moon McInnis (drums/vocals), Grant Leslie (bass/vocals) and Colton Craft (keyboard/vocals) — will appear Feb. 1 and 2 at the Jarvis Street Saloon in Whitehorse.

Later, the quartet will play three nights in Fort McMurray, the adopted home of many expatriate Maritimers.

Minglewood vividly recalls his first tempestuous stint in the Alberta oil town shortly after RCA Records released his hit album, Movin’, in 1980.

The second night of a scheduled two-night gig was abruptly cancelled.

“The next morning, the Mounties woke us up and escorted us

out of town, right to the town limits. We didn’t play there again for quite a few years, but I’ve gone back many times since,” Minglewood laughs.

he Yukon Association for Community Living (YACL) was abuzz with excited people when I walked in from the frozen weather on Wednesday, December 5. It was my first time at the YACL resource centre located in Whitehorse at the Yukon Inn Plaza, though not my first time experiencing the positive impact of this important organization.

Tonight was a celebration of a brand new CD that was created by a wonderful group of men, most in their 20s, with intellectual disabilities. They call themselves the Minus 40 Majority.

This group of men learns and experiences the world in a way that is different from the way most of us do, but I discovered something that we have in common: the love of music and the mysterious understanding of how it enriches our lives, especially when we share it — which is exactly what Wade Kaye, Chris Lee, Frank Marnoch, Gaetan Michaud, Julien Richard and Sidney Stewart did that night.

It was an unusual CD release party because nobody performed – at least not in the musical sense.

Making this CD was the Minus 40 Majority’s first foray into expressing themselves lyrically and musically; performing in public was not part of the deal. Not this record deal. No Siree.

It’s one thing to create unique songs and music, then record them in a secure environment where they have been made to feel safe about sharing their ideas, feelings and creativity, it’s another thing to recreate those songs in front of an audience.

“Horses in the Mist” is a spoken word story by Julien Richard. It was mesmerizing, with a sincere tone that felt like a blanket of snow.

“Drum Song” is the “men in the bush” song. Dave Sutton’s tickle trunk of percussion instruments was dispersed among eleven jamming dudes in the woods, with the record button on. What goes on at Sun Dog stays at Sun Dog, but not everything.

“Wild Horses at Canyon Creek”

by Sidney Stewart, is the country song of the bunch, with some yippee-ki-yay’s and ki-yo’s going on.

It’s fun and catchy.

Then there is the heartfelt “Friendship Rap” by Chris Lee and Gaetan Michaud. It was moving at the release party to watch the backs of their heads bobbing up and down as the stereo blasted out their tune for us. They were proud.

In fact, all the men were proud. And so they should be.

They put their heart and soul into these songs. They took risks. They shared their stories. They are true artists.

Only a handful of CDs were made up — enough to give to each artist, and the media (that’s me).

formance,” we still got a show watching Gary Lachance, who acted as executive producer of the CD, press play on the stereo.

Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. There was plenty of humour that night.

There are seven tracks on the CD, Our Stories, Our Songs, and one-by-one we listened to each song.

Lachance had a very important role here. He fed us with his enthusiasm and regaled us with stories from their Sun Dog retreat, which is where the songs came together and were recorded. In detail, he told us about how each song was created and who was the star of each track.

For six weeks prior to recording the project, the group met every Wednesday with their mentors and worked on songwriting. Artist mentors for the project included Gary Lachance, technical producer Tim Naylor, keyboardist David Sutton, percussionist Dan Dunphy and guitarist Clint Watson. Vicki Wilson was the project coordinator and in fact came up with the whole idea.

There is a wide range of genres on this album. “Faded Love”, a fiddle tune, was performed by Wade Kaye in one take. I heard him a couple days later on CHON FM where he performed the song perfectly over the radio. Kaye is quite the talent; featuring excellent tone in his fiddle playing.

“Sunrise” is a fiddle and drum composition by Wade Kaye and Frank Marnoch. It had a beautiful tension to the music, and I thought to myself that it could be mistaken for a film soundtrack by Yukon composer-and-filmmaker Daniel Janke.

Seeking Beervana with Lara Lewis

Winter Beer to Warm the Cockles T he weather outside is frightful but a beer could be delightful — even if it’s not the first drink that comes to mind after a brisk day in a wintery wonderland.

Most people don’t crave beer after freezing their extremities. Hot chocolate with Baileys?

Maybe. Hot toddy? Yes please.

Most beer can’t transition from cold-and-carbonated quencher to piping-hot soother. But, if you can get your hands on a bottle of Quelque Chose, a cherry beer brewed by Unibroue Brewery in Quebec, you have a shot at it.

This beer has been brewed by the brewery since 1996 and clocks in at 8.0% abv. It is considered a mash-up of a brown ale and a Belgian kriek (cherry) ale.

You can heat it up over the stove, pour it into a mug and drink it like a hot cherry cider. It has a sweet and tart cherry character and overtones of spices like cinnamon and clove that harkens some-

thing festive.

You can also drink it at cellar temperature (8-12º Celsius) in a tulip glass or brandy snifter if you can’t bring yourself to insult a beer by purposely torching it.

But, you don’t have to drink simmery beer to fully enjoy a malted beverage in the depths of winter. Yukon Brewing’s Lead Dog is supposed to be served warmer than fridge temperature; it has a depth of flavour that emerges when it warms up. The same is true of their Midnight Sun Espresso Stout. The snowy season brings on a lot of bigger, darker, spicier beers.

Yukon Brewing Co. has their Spiced Winter Ale on tap at the Brewery and if you take a quick jaunt to Skagway you can pick up Alaskan Brewing Co.’s Winter Ale flavoured with spruce tips.

Winter is actually the perfect time to be kicking back with big beers, especially the kings of beer, and I don’t mean Budweiser.

Barleywines are beer monarchs that reach wine-like alcohol rates of 12%+ abv, hence the name. A few British Columbia breweries now brew barleywines.

Look for Driftwood Brewer’s Old Cellar Dweller, a brew from Victoria, in British Columbian liquor stores for a stellar example of the style — just don’t expect to get them at regular beer prices.

The ingredient bill is big and these beers need a bit more aging than your usual lager before they go to market.

Big beers aside, there is something undeniable about Canadians’ love affair with beer that transcends the seasons — that’s why there are beer vessels insulated in blankets of snow during outdoor hockey games, and cans of crisp lager at-the-ready while ice fish-

Expansive Mark-making and Education Joyce Majiski displays two shows at Arts Underground

W

hat if a gallery contains only a few works, with room to breathe between them? Whitehorse artist Joyce Majiski’s new shows at Arts Underground offer a refreshing change from the busy salon-style hangings that characterize many art presentations in the Yukon.

Majiski offers two shows in the basement gallery until January 29; visit Gros Morne in the front room and continue through to Photo Processes in the back.

Majiski’s September 2011 residency at Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland inspired Gros Morne. The show consists of two assemblages and five very large works on paper, using acrylic and pencil. The largest is about 4 x 8 feet in size and the rest are not much smaller. Unframed, they are installed with pushpins. No price is specified; viewers are invited to contact the artist if interested in purchasing a work. In this way, art is allowed space to be an experi-

ence rather than a commodity.

Most of the works on paper include marks that seem to be made by a fishnet that’s been soaked in paint and then applied to the paper in big swirling gestures. Wild, watery, splashy marks at the edge of the painted areas evoke the ocean. Majiski plays with mark-making interwoven with representation. She draws or paints boats, seagulls, shorebirds and lobster traps into these exuberant gestures. “Drydock� differs in approach.

Majiski renders a realistic boat in rusty sepia and grey paint. The image fades out into the white surrounding area of the paper on all sides. The boat is placed low and to the right, not dead centre, creating a grounded feeling.

On closer inspection, the dabbed brush marks and quick pencil lines confer a vulnerable character to this boat.

Majiski’s assemblages of beachfound treasures, like most of the

drawings, include fishnet. They’re both based on green-painted books with hollows carved out of their glued-together pages. “Artifacts of Passage I� includes a feather, rock and crab carapace, beach glass and a pop can pull-tab and can-end. “Artifacts of Passage II� includes many paper and aluminium fish shapes sewn or tied into the net, which is laid over beach plastic, including a plastic spoon, assembled with a thick and, in places, bubbly acrylic gel medium. The latter seems to speak to the way we depend on the ocean for much of our food, yet fill it with garbage.

In the back room, Photo Processes functions as an introduction to some of the many photobased printmaking processes Majiski uses to create her manylayered art prints. You will find examples and explanations of colour separations, photo etchings, an etched copper plate (itself very beautiful with oxidation around

These things can give the viewer a sense of some of the many methods Majiski layers in creating her one-of-a-kind “monoprints.�

Yukon artists invited to apply for Chilkoot Trail residency program

T

he storied 53-kilometre Chilkoot Trail crosses the border between Canada and the US and offers spectacular scenery to history buffs and hikers alike. Originally a vital Tlingit trade and travel route, during the Gold Rush it became the “poor man’s route” to the Klondike gold fields.

The trail was steep, gold fever was high and so were casualties.

For example, in the famous Palm Sunday avalanche of 1898, at least 60 of the 220 hikers on the trail perished in over nine metres of snow. Between 1897-99, the RCMP forbade eager prospectors entry to the trail unless they were carrying enough provisions and gear for one year.A stove, 400 lbs of flour, 150 lbs of bacon, 2 axes with an extra handle and six heavy wool mittens are among the list of 54 items, in total weighing 1 ton, that prospectors were required to bring with them. While folks can now enter the trail without such a heavy load, park officials permit only 50 hikers to begin the trail each day.

This year the deadline to apply to participate in the program is Feb. 1. Three visual artists will be selected: one regional artist from either the Yukon or Alaska, one from Canada and one from the United States.

Mary Bradshaw, YAC Public Art Gallery director, says that another unique aspect of the program is that the artists are continuously on the move through the park.

“What makes the program stand-out as special is that it is truly a journey,” Bradshaw says.

“Artists are not ‘in-residence’ the same way as other residencies (even those based in parks or wild areas) rather, they are moving through the environment. To genuinely experience the Chilkoot, you have to hike it. This is not an easy residency and it definitely isn’t for everyone. But the artists and hikers who have completed the trail have a tremendous feeling of accomplishment and awe.”

Bowen Island artist Jay White felt that sense of accomplishment and awe – he participated in the residency last year, along with one other artist, American Corrie Francis Parks.

“I remember all the wonderful conversations with people

that I had on the trail, in Skagway, Carcross and in Whitehorse,” says White. “I also remember a particular point on the trail, just as you descend towards the footbridge that crosses over into the Deep Lake Camp. You turn a corner, and for the first time the undulating forested landscape of the Southern Yukon is spread before you. This is the precise place where I fell in love with the Yukon when I first hiked the trail a decade ago. This is the viewpoint that made me quit my job in Vancouver, leave everything and move North. I sat there for a long time and shed a few joyful tears and was extremely thankful. I love that place.”

Artists selected to participate will receive USD$500 travel reimbursement; up to USD$200 for art supplies and gear; and a CAD$1,000 honorarium from the YAC. Life is in the Blood

Leong’s art show presents spiritual challenge

Y

ou may be alarmed to hear that Leslie Leong’s own plasma is taking top billing in her multi-media exhibit BloodLetting: a Rite of Purification.

Don’t worry, her blood is just the stand-in for her soul.

Leong’s show is now hanging at Gallery 22, in downtown Whitehorse. The exhibition, which has previously toured Yellowknife and several smaller NWT communities, consists of 25 three-by-four foot panels that combine newspaper clippings with Leong’s stunning photographs and lyrical text. Each panel, underlaid in paint mixed with Leong’s blood, broaches a universal human theme through highly personal stories and reflections.

One such panel is titled “Illumination.” The text meditates on the essential wonder and amazement that gives us hope in humanity. The photo is an uplifting shot of a beautiful mountain peak, yet the newspaper clippings tell stories of despair, of how this illumination is being clouded.

Another panel, called “Fine Balance,” ruminates on the delicate and constantly shifting balance that the world presents and how humans seek their own balance within this world. An accompanying photo featuring shifting sand attempts to capture this feeling.

Leong’s blood is indeed within in the panels. Unable to have it done at a hospital, and wisely unwilling to do it herself, she had two small vials of her blood drawn by the midwife who birthed her sons. The blood was incorporated into the paint.

More significantly, the blood symbolizes Leong’s spiritual, emotional and intellectual process of immersing herself in the often-horrifying facts of the world around us through the newspapers that report it.

“We read newspapers all the time, but to go into it in depth was another thing,” Leong explains.

“I’m not the kind of person who can read newspapers every day because it’s too much. Getting that deeper sense for what was going on in the world was hard

Creating the panels was a three-part artistic process. Scanning the newspapers was a way of taking in the world around her. Collating the clippings into themes, writing the text and finding images was a process of trying to come to a very personal understanding of these events.

Finally, assembling and exhibiting the panels was a way of releasing it back to the world, not just for an audience, but for her own well-being.

“It’s not healthy to hold onto that,” Leong says. “For me, doing the exhibit was like purging it, like dealing with the world and coping with knowledge in some way.”

Leong’s themes have surfaced throughout human history, literature and religion.

Like many forms of spiritual questioning, Leong offers the audience not just her own reflections and experience, but also the opportunity to form and take up their own call to action.

“When we as humans, when we

share things our intent is to affect another person,” Leong says.

“So my hope is to help people to either continue to, or start to, question things. When we question, we can start to make change on a personal level first and then extend it out there to the world.”

To help her audience, the entire exhibition has been reproduced in the form of a small meditation book. For practical reasons, it is impossible to fully absorb the full 25 panels in one visit. The meditation book offers the opportunity to revisit the ideas, stories and images. As Leong says, “Take them home, contemplate them and keep them present in your life.”

Blood-Letting: A Rite of Purification is on exhibit in Whitehorse until Feb. 3 at Gallery 22, located upstairs in Triple J’s Music Café.

The gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m., 2013.

&DUHH U )DLU The 12th Annual Young Women Exploring Trades Career Fair which was held on November 16th, 2012 was another great success!

90 grade 8 girls from across the Yukon participated in 8 different workshops which gave them a unique hands-on introduction to the exciting world of trades in a fun and supportive environment. The organizers were delighted to see participants from Atlin, Ecole Emily Tremblay, Haines Junction, Teslin and Watson Lake as well as representation from all Whitehorse high schools attend the fair.

Roy Ness describes his self-publishing experience

I

n my other writing life I produce a weekly column called Bookends. As a result I see a lot of books, an increasing number of which are self-published.

The results so far have been rather uneven. There have been some that really needed an editorial hand, others where the copyediting was enough to make you cry. Some have had covers that do nothing to invite the reader, typefaces that could have come off a Gestetner and page layouts that scream â&#x20AC;&#x153;amateurâ&#x20AC;?.

When Whitehorse resident Roy Nessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first book, Rutting Season, came my way I did not immediately spot it as a self-published book.

Its 360 pages are neatly bound; thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an attractive photo on the cover; there are only a few typos that caught my eye; the overall production was very good.

The book itself only tells you that it was made in Charleston, SC, so I called up Ness to ask him about it.

Rutting Season delves into preconceptions about hunting When an eco-activist white woman gets stranded and nearly dies in the bush north of Ross River, she is rescued by a mixed race hunter.

During their trip down the river together both are forced to confront some of their preconceptions about hunting and lifestyle choices.

Having been suitably impressed with Rutting Season, I wondered why he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t submit it to a regular publisher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have much luck doing that,â&#x20AC;? says Ness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was just about at the point where I was going to try to find an agent.â&#x20AC;?

He was moved to try the indie (as they call it) route after listening to a presenter at one of those

Ness had already worked to make the details of the story accurate. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hunted, and hauled horses in a trailer. He and his daughter, Clare, did a river trip on the Macmillan River just to get the geography as accurate as possible.

He has taken the book through several drafts. Including a massive restructuring of the presentation of events on the advice of author Stephen Galloway (The Cellist of Sarajevo) after a residency at the Sage Hill Writing Experience in Saskatchewan.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d reached the point where he wanted to get it out of his hands and into the world. CreateSpace provided a relatively inexpensive way to move on in that direction.

Amazon seemed to have the widest possible reach for this approach. The publish-on-demand feature meant he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to end up with inventory and yet the book would be available in hard copy or e-book format just about anywhere.

As it happened, it is available through Amazon (paper or Kindle), or Barnes and Noble (paper but not Nook), and several other online booksellers, as well as local bookstores.

The website offers both free tools to do-it-yourself and the option to have them do it for you.

Ness chose the latter option. Even so, he was pleased with his own participation and the price. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You are involved in every step of the way. The cover design, the fonts and so on â&#x20AC;&#x201D; everything was down to my approval.â&#x20AC;?

The downside of going the indie route is that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no one out there pushing your book for you. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The word has to get out about the book and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basically up to me, to get the word out,â&#x20AC;? says Ness. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the hard part for me â&#x20AC;&#x201D; figuring out a marketing plan.â&#x20AC;?

Still the book is selling and the Kirkus Reviews Agency recently gave it a starred review in its indie category, calling it â&#x20AC;&#x153;An uplifting read that informs, enlightens and satisfies.â&#x20AC;? So it seems the word is getting out.

Rutting Season is now available at local bookstores for approximately $20, depending on where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purchased.

In Praise of Do-it-Yourself Culture

Whitehorse resident Nellie Dale’s home crafting station is fertile ground for ideas.

am a “DIYer.” I like making things for myself, family and friends. My kit includes wool, paper, stickers and beads. Books and magazines give me inspiration.

This year I created craft baskets for my youngest friends. The craft baskets included pencils, glue, a few buttons, stickers, beads and construction paper.

I used little bits of wool left over from another project to knit Domino Knit swatches and make gift tags and cards.

DIY projects span the economic spectrum. Craft supplies can be found at second hand shops. And one winter, when I was living in a cabin with no electricity, I made crafts at the laundromat while I waited for laundry.

This year, when my husband asked what I wanted for Christmas I said, “make me something” and suggested a few things. Roger is a fantastic finishing carpenter, both meticulous and careful. Every cut, sanding and installation is completed in the same expert manner.

He bought some used pallets a few years ago for our woodpile and he has been saving the best pieces. My gift under the tree?

A new cutting board made from these pallets featuring a rainbow of colours and textures. It was just about too beautiful to use.

My sister Lorraine in Winnipeg, also a DIYer, dons a Christmas hat and morphs into Mrs. Claus each December. She packs gift bags for my family and myself as well as for her family. All year she looks for small treasures to fill the bags, some of which are garage sale finds.

My grandson, Darwin, found Lego in his Mrs. Claus bag. I was sent two wonderful knitting books – and I am already knitting one of

I always have bits of wool left over from knitting projects, for example, lots of sock yarn but not enough to knit another pair.

The project I am working on is an Advent sock-calendar, which is allowing me to use the leftovers.

I want to make at least two for next Christmas’s gift list. So far I have 12 socks knit; just 36 socks left.

This Christmas Roger and I had time to finish a travel-related project. We had a collection of shells and beads from our spring trip to Spain and Morocco. The Berber culture of Morocco includes woodworking, metal and silver work and jewellery making. Doors to buildings are works of art.

We recreated a Berber door for a bathroom mirror frame. Built with leftover wood, we stained it, bought doorknobs and attached shells and beads as decorations.

I like the DIY culture because it gives me time to reflect – on a wonderful northern Canadian life, on my children and Roger, on creating new things from bits and pieces passed over by others.

It gives me confidence to try new things.

All a DIYer needs to do is focus on what he or she can do and then start doing it – for themselves and others.

Skiing is Believing with Knute Johnsgaard

A

skier is like a caribou, always on the move.

Take the Porcupine caribou herd: each year they embark on an epic trek. They fight the heat, the mosquitoes, the wolves, the hunters and whatever else gets in their way. They’ll do whatever it takes to reach their goal: the calving grounds.

Maybe they wont cross the Dempster Highway and reach the Promised Land this year but they’re still headed in the right direction.

Here’s where I’m going with this…

Every day I think about what I

have to do, where I have to go to be where I want to be. If I’m not racing, I’m training to race faster — always on the move. Every winter, I hike my own migration path (figuratively of course), traveling to the next race site, trying to move up in the ranks. I fight injury, sickness and sometimes my bank account, but like the caribou, I find a way around my problems.

Already this year I feel like I’m getting closer to where I want to be. I raced my first World Cup this past December. It wasn’t a breakthrough performance, but no doubt a step in the right direction.

I’ve had posters of these guys in my room and now I’m racing with them. Breakthrough or not, it’s a pretty awesome feeling.

It felt good to come home for Christmas, even if it was -30ºC. The trails at Mount Mac were perfect – and with the cold weather I had them almost to myself. Christmas being the gregarious festivity it is, there’s no coincidence that it coincides with flu season. It’s starting to become tradition for me to pick up some sort of illness over Christmas.

I kicked my cold just in time as I flew to Thunder Bay, Ontario on December 31. No News Years party

for me; these were the trial races for the World Juniour and Under 23 Championships.

Last year Yukon sent a whopping five people, myself included.

This year wouldn’t be so easy for me. I was fighting for one of four spots with guys two years older than myself.

However, I consistently place near the top of the under 23 category. I didn’t have to have stellar races to qualify, so I thought.

Unluckily for me, while I pulled off a decent weekend of races, some other guys had the race of their lives and I was the odd man out.

While I have cut my losses, my friend and teammate Colin Abbott had some great results and will be representing the Yukon, traveling with team Canada in Czech Republic.

So I won’t go to the Under 23 World Championships this year.

So the caribou didn’t cross the Dempster. They’re still headed in the right direction, and so am I. Knute Johnsgaard is chasing the Olympic dream.

You Say Goodbye, I say Hello

I was very happy not to be among the large crowds at the choreographed and organized ceremonies in Tikal that day. My experience felt much more authentic.

Aside from the Mayan ceremonies, there were lots of fireworks. The Guatemalans love their fireworks.

They seemed to be going off constantly; they were the lullaby that put us to sleep at night and the alarm going off in the morning. Actually, there did seem to be enough fireworks over

the holidays to spell the catastrophic destruction of a small county, if used improperly.

Our family almost brought about the catastrophic end of a gas station with our own fireworks.

But that is my son Ben’s story to tell, so if you see him you should ask about it.

his Christmas I had the great fortune of visiting Guatemala. I really enjoyed answering the question, “Why did you decide to come to Guatemala?” which I was asked by locals more than I had expected.

I always answered that Guatemala was the centre of the Mayan civilization and that I wanted to have front row seats for the “end of the world.” This always got a grin and a good laugh most of the time.

“Hollywood,” they would say, while they shook their heads.

If you thought the end of the 13th Baktun (on December 21, 2012) meant the end of the world, well, the Mayans were laughing at you,

at least any of the Mayans I met.

One cycle of the calendar coming to an end doesn’t signify the end of the world in the Mayan culture any more than it does in ours.

Okay, so maybe there was some stockpiling of water and canned goods for Y2K. I think we need to get our catastrophobia under control.

I didn’t get a really good explanation of the Mayan calendar, but my understanding goes a little like this: There are 20 days in unit of measure that equates loosely with months and there are 18 of these units in a unit that equates loosely with a year. This rolls upwards in units of measure to the end of the 13th Baktuns that were

laid out in the Mayan calendar.

At this point catastrophobes thought the world would end, but the rest of us flipped the calendar back to the beginning and started again.

Far from the panic and food-hoarding you would expect to see from a population that had predicted imminent demise, there was only celebration in Guatemala.

On December 21, 2012, we were privileged enough to be invited to a small ceremony conducted by a single Mayan elder from a village near Panajachel. She was a friend of our host family and frequented the commercial calle (avenue) to sell her wares throughout the year. She had been invited to conduct her ceremony for the end of the 13th Baktun there.
