GIGS FROM HELL 1 Gigs we’d like to forget but just can’t

by Paul Lucas “Oh, it must be wonderful being a musician; making a living doing what you love.”

“Ha!” - That’s what I say - “Ha!” Don’t get me wrong. Being able to stay alive by strumming a guitar is a crazy piece of good fortune, especially if you are playing music you love. But ‘making a living’ as our friend puts it, involves taking many, many gigs that you would just as soon forget.

Gigs occupy various locations in the musical spectrum - from wonderful concerts played in fantastic venues featuring original material, to musical situations you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. There is no need to go into the nights of wonder, because that’s what they are - nights where everything falls into place and you feel like you are standing in the light.

No, we want to delve into the land of the grayscale - the place where desecration and horror reside. We want to revisit those gigs that have stayed alive in memory purely because of their hilarity quotient - the sheer volume of laughs you get when you share them with your fellow performers.

I’ve sat with musicians from dusk til dawn recounting musical shit shows we’ve played, and all I can say is that, in the end, they provided far greater mass in belly laughs than they ever extracted in soul juice.

Here’s a gig that remains in memory to this day, if only for olfactory reasons ••• THE SMELL OF SUCCESS The Dance of the Latrines Daniel Janke and I were playing a duo gig in Faro, Yukon. (You will get to know Dan better in ‘Music in the Yukon’).

Dan and I both write, so between the two of us we usually can put together an evening of original material material that ranges from Jazz to New Music.

It was an early concert, and we were packing up when one of the local organizers said, “Would you fellas like to come down to the local watering spot and knock out a few tunes? I’m sure we could raise some extra bucks for you, and it would make the trip more worthwhile.”

“Why sure,” we said, like rubes walking into the fairground in search of the bearded lady.

Well, you’ve never seen anything like it. The joint was a rambling quasi-under-ground cavern filled with dyspeptic miners who didn’t give a crap about music, and would have much preferred a stripper over two skinny jazz musicians. It didn’t look good from the start, but the capper was the bandstand, if I can call it that. The best place for us to set up was, evidently, the area between the two toilets.

Now I don’t know whether there has ever been an experiment involving the difference in smell between male and female urine, but I can tell you right now, if there is a difference, it’s minimal. We stood there for two hours playing music that nobody wanted to hear, between a pair of spring charged bathroom doors that, at least twice a minute, swung wide to issue the worst stench imaginable. No one else in the bar seemed to notice. For us, though, it was a living hell. That couple of hours felt like eternity.

Still, all was not lost. We were rewarded with some very fond looks from the local female fauna, who evidently felt we were fine young artists deserving of being taken upstairs to view etchings of one sort or another. We didn’t accept any offers, our art requirements having already been met for the evening.

The G2GF oversees several Joint Initiative (JI) Working Groups, each of which address important issues on the land base, including mining and mineral exploration, protected areas, fish and wildlife management, as well as research and monitoring.
