Young Yukon minds have an exciting opportunity: one that challenges creativity and critical thinking, while developing strong communication and collaboration skills.

Destination Imagination (DI) is an extra-curricular activity that challenges teams of students from elementary through high school to solve open-ended problems and present their solutions at tournaments.

This fall, Destination Imagination's Director of Canadian Operations, Roger Garriock, will be in Whitehorse to speak about the benefits of the Destination Imagination program, and how your children - and you - can get involved.

Every year, teams of two to seven students choose one of six challenges to complete. Challenges range from science and engineering, to performance arts, to community service. Adult volunteers who guide kids through their projects manage teams.

A tournament season where students present their solutions occurs over the winter months. By spring, tournament winners are preparing to attend Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 2014, over 20,000 young people from over a dozen countries competed.

Yukon's Department of Education has committed to supporting local Destination Imagination teams, and the recently formed Destination Imagination Yukon Society will work to send at least one Yukon team to Knoxville this spring. To help make this possible, sponsors will be sought.

A lapse is not a relapse Just about everyone who wants to make a lifestyle change will "fall off the wagon". Someone trying to improve their diet eats a big bag of chips in one sitting; a smoker who's been smoke-free for days bums a cigarette off his friend. A person who takes a 30-minute walk every other day after dinner watches a sit-com instead. These are examples of lapses.

A relapse is when you abandon your goal all together, and retreat into old patterns. Try not to confuse the two.

What can you do when you have a lapse?

Remind yourself that slips (or lapses) are normal -between 60 and 70 percent of people making a lifestyle change will slip up during the first month or so. Having a lapse doesn't predict whether you will be successful.

Make sure it doesn't become a relapse. Get back on track as soon as possible. The longer the relapse, the harder it is to recover.

Treat the lapse as a learning opportunity. Be a detective -- try to identify what triggered the lapse.

Develop a plan to avoid or manage that trigger in the future to prevent another lapse.
