This summer, Raven Recycling will be piloting a series of artist residencies called Diversions

F

ive artists will set up twoweek studios near the textile recycling boxes in the depot, or outside in tents. They will undertake projects that make use of materials they are familiar working with and that are abundant at Raven.

While the projects may divert some material from the waste stream, for a little while, we don’t anticipate that individual artist projects will be able to make the

changes that need to happen at a systemic level. Heather Ashthorn, Raven’s executive director, explained, “The intent is to divert our thinking along new pathways.

Sometimes we need artists to help us see and know differently.”

In addition to the two-week residency, artists will offer a Sunday workshop, at the depot, where participants can work with recycled materials directly under the imaginative direction of each artist, benefitting from the skills they’ve developed, over the years, learning with and from these materials.

Each artist will leave some aspect of their work installed at Raven, so that there will be an accumulation of installations to check out there, over the summer.

On the final Fridays of each residency, Raven will host an

artist talk and panel discussion where the public can view the artwork and hear the artist talk about it. Each artist will invite an Indigenous Elder to take part in this discussion. The idea of not wasting things is something you hear about a lot if you listen to people talk about First Nations traditional values. Even in settler culture, I know my own greatgrandma wasted a lot less than people do today.

Each material has a different destination and process for recycling, and this is something that people who drop their nonrefundables off at Raven often ask about and that Raven sometimes has a hard time communicating to the public about. This is a great opportunity for us all to learn together.

This is important because the problem of the way our culture deals with material doesn’t go away when we drop it in the

recycling bin. The path to reuse or recycle is littered with complications, market conditions for materials, the cost of transportation and so on. When we drive away, feeling all light and redeemed after tossing our plastics and paper, it’s partly because we don’t consider or don’t have a full understanding of what happens next. “Recycling is complicated,” observed Ashthorn, “and we could use more imagination to help us rethink the tangled way we use materials.”

For example, there are regulation changes afoot that may change the way Raven is involved in paper and plastic recycling, soon. In addition to this, inspired by what she learned about glass fusing, with Jeanine Baker, she’s envisioning a series of ravens, in flight, in a gradated series of tints of broken and fused bottle glass, for the high window in the bottle depot. For her Sunday workshop, she imagines making puppets and puppet shows, with families, using materials from the cardboard and plastic recycling streams.

Finally, Helen O’Connor will work with paper at the depot July 18–29. She plans to use discarded paper and pages from discarded, damaged books, to create sculptural garments. She will invite her visitors, during the residency, to collaborate with her in making these, especially in forming the paper cones you see in these images. Helen has “concern for the overconsumption and waste of paper products.” New paper products are often produced through unsustainable practices, such as clearcutting trees. As well, the use of harsh chemicals in the processing can lead to contamination of waterways and the environment.

Using plant fibres, such as hemp, in combination with recycled paper, creates a more-ethical and -sustainable product. Content from text and original context of the papers brings interesting content to the work. For her Sunday workshop, participants will learn to make handmade recycled paper by using blenders, screens, discarded paper and plant fibres.

Funding from the Yukon Arts Fund, as well as from Raven Recycling’s Zero Waste Yukon program, help to support these residencies.

Susan Clark is a retired Family Physician living in Whitehorse with three sons and two granddaughters.

ARE THE TREES WEEPING? My first real experience of the boreal forest was on a canoe trip at age 20

I

grew up in Canadian Shield country, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Rocks were what I mostly noticed and loved.

But a few kilometres north of the town where I lived were remnants of the boreal forest, scattered patches among the rock-strewn clearings for farmland. Farther north were larger and larger patches of forest (1950s). However, it was my first canoe trip into Algonquin Park that forged my lifelong connection to the boreal forest. My family were not particularly outdoor types, so I am not sure where my urge to go to the forest came from. My parents said I must be a throwback to a First Nations ancestor who married into my United Loyalist family when they arrived in Ontario in 1769. At age 16, I had saved enough babysitting money to buy a canvas-covered canoe that was beginning to rot on a neighbour’s lawn and that proved to be my

After that time of my life, my work took me to many places in the world where the Canadian boreal forest was just a memory, folded away like a treasure map for some future date. So, in 2012, when we decided to check

out Whitehorse as a place to retire, my urge was to find a place to live in the forest. Realizing this might not be the wisest move at that age, we were thrilled to find a house whose backyard gate led directly into the woods. I took great joy in telling friends, across Canada, that outside of our backyard, there was wilderness all the way to Alaska and the Pacific Ocean.

At least once a day, almost every day for the past nine years, I have walked in that forest in the

dark mornings of winter, with frost on my eyelashes and a headlamp to light the path, in bright sunshine at 11 p.m., and everything in-between. At times, I have a very strong feeling that the trees are communicating with me. And learning that they do communicate with each other, by underground networks of mycelium, seems to be completely understandable.

Then came the reality of climate change and my growing awareness of the risks of wildfires

in the boreal forest. I understand that fires are a natural part of the life of the forest, but that if we want to live in a “wilderness city,” it is necessary to protect our communities from fire. I saw the devastation in BC’s forests and in places like Fort McMurray, and I do not want that to happen here.

However, the reality of “fire smarting” breaks my heart. The dense forest outside my gate has been reduced to a park-like area of well-spaced trees and cleared forest floor in-between.

Will the Arctic lupines light up the forest again in May? Will there still be carpets of cranberries and mushrooms? Will the lichens be the same? Where will the birds build nests next spring? I have stopped chasing the neighbouring squirrel away from the bird feeder. She has fewer trees from which to harvest cones. And what is happening to the trees that have lost their mother trees? The sound of chainsaws and chippers has serenaded all of my walks, in the last couple of years, and I hear talk of a wide area clear of trees needed around the city.

I don’t like climate change and the ensuing climate chaos. But it is here, so at least I must adapt and do my small part towards mitigation. And now, on my daily walks, I mourn the loss of the trees and find myself silently apologizing to the ones left standing. Perhaps that is crazy, but it is part of my adaptation. n

THERE’S A NEW FESTIVAL IN TOWN

rowing up in Ontario, music teacher Katie Avery was part of a music school that held regular recitals featuring groups of students from different teachers. They were opportunities for music students to get to see and hear other musicians whom they otherwise may not have.

When it was clear that the Yukon would have to keep waiting for the Rotary Music Festival, to come around again, Avery was inspired by her days as a student to create a new festival with the

Yukon Registered Music Teachers’ Association (YRMTA), similar to the ones she participated in growing up.

“The pandemic killed the ability to run that festival,” she said of the Rotary Music Festival. “It was just too big and too complicated.

But I wanted to still have something the music teachers would do together, so our students could hear each other play.”

The idea started out as a series of recitals, throughout the year, until Avery and the rest of

the organizers decided it would be more doable to host the series as a festival over one weekend. The inaugural Yukon Music Festival runs from April 21 to 23, with performances taking place simultaneously at Riverdale Baptist Church and Whitehorse United Church. The recitals will consist primarily of solo players and singers, though some ensembles will take part as well.

The festival will see 130 students, from 16 teachers, performing a multitude of styles, instruments and levels.

“Generally speaking, the music world skews towards beginners, so there will be a lot of sweet little children playing adorable little tunes that are about 30 seconds long,” said Avery. “But each recital also has a handful of more-advanced students, to show off that higher range of ability that we’re able to cultivate here.”

As a teacher, Avery said she finds it “enlightening” to see her students perform their pieces after working with her on them for so long. No matter how well-rehearsed a student is, performing is always much different than practising.

“You learn things about our students [that] you didn’t know before, both in terms of what they’re good at and what they need to work on going forward,” she said.

“They achieve a type of focus, through the nerves, that you just can’t get practising or at a lesson.”

For students who have not taken part in a festival or recital before, Avery will have them run through their entire performance routine, complete with a bow and all, during lessons and rehearsal.

She said she finds it makes a big difference when the students know what to expect from having rehearsed fully.

“Even if you’re nervous at your lesson, it’s not the same as when you go up to perform,” she said.

The Yukon Music Festival is presented by the YRMTA, in partnership with Whitehorse Concerts.

ROASTED SARDINES WITH TANGERINES AND SHALLOTS

Y

ou can find whole sardines in most of the grocery store freezer sections, but they often come with guts and scales. If you let them thaw for 15–20 minutes on the counter, then use a sharp knife along the belly, you can gut them and remove the scales, while they’re mostly frozen, and also avoid most of the unpleasant smells and mess. Serves 2.

INGREDIENTS ❑ 4 whole sardines, gutted and scaled ❑ 1 tbsp olive oil ❑ Salt and pepper, to taste ❑ 2 tangerines, halved

❑ 1 shallot, sliced

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook Set the oven at 425℉. Scatter sliced shallots in an oven-proof pan, then place sardines on top.

Drizzle with olive oil and season to taste with salt and pepper. Squeeze halved tangerines over sardines, then place in the pan as well.

Place in the oven and roast until sardines begin to brown (about 15 minutes). Serve immediately.

find the fridge the trickiest.

No matter how clever I try to be, my menu planning is never good enough that the shelves are empty on the morning I leave.

So then come the harrowing last-minute decisions: Will the Brussels sprouts last, or must they be foisted on a neighbour, or (what a waste!) composted? Will the blue cheese sprout more mould than even the most-dedicated fan of stinky cheese can countenance?

Will the coffee cream curdle if I freeze it? It’s always a gamble.

While I’m gone I try to forget about the damn fridge and what it might get up to in my absence.

Science experiments, do your worst! And occasionally, upon my return, I’m pleasantly surprised.

I came back home on the first day of spring, from the intense joy of a family visit in Ontario, to a happy discovery: four lemons still smiling sunnily in the crisper, and a tub of yogurt not yet past its best-before date. No furry cheese, no wilted lettuce. Cause for celebration!

Lemon yogurt cake immediately sprang to mind, suiting both the mood and the returning sun. With the addition of tangy low-bush cranberries, this cake will provide a burst of bright flavours to propel you through fridge cleaning and any other spring chores, right into the new culinary season.

Lemon-Cranberry Yogurt Cake • • • •

3 large eggs 1 cup plain yogurt 1 cup granulated sugar 2 tsp grated lemon zest (2 lemons) • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 1/2 cup vegetable oil • 1 cup low-bush cranberries, fresh or frozen Syrup • 1/3 cup lemon juice • 1/3 cup granulated sugar Topping • 2 tbsp icing sugar Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (fahrenheit). Butter and flour a 9-inch springform cake pan.

2. In a small bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. In a larger bowl, beat the eggs until thick and lemony.

Whisk in the sugar, yogurt, lemon zest and vanilla.

3. Slowly pour the dry ingredients into the wet, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until thoroughly combined.

4. Using a rubber spatula, fold the vegetable oil into the batter,

making sure it’s fully i n c o r porated.

5. Fold in the cranberries and pour the batter into the prepared pan.

6. Bake on the middle rack for about 50 minutes, until a tester inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean.

7. While the cake is baking, prepare the syrup: combine sugar and lemon juice in a small pot and heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Alternatively, combine sugar and lemon juice in a mixing cup and microwave at high for one minute. Set aside.

8. Remove the cake from the oven and allow to cool in the pan, on a rack, for 10 minutes. Run a slim blade around the edge of the cake and remove the rim.

9. Place the cake on a plate and pour the syrup slowly over top, allowing it to soak in. Let the cake cool to room temperature.

10. Sift the icing sugar over top of the cake, just before serving.

Serve as is or accompanied by a dollop of whipped cream.

DISCOVERING ROMANCE WHILE ESCAPING DANGER A review of The Lost City

T

he quest for ancient treasure is never an easy one, especially when you kidnap a reclusive romance novelist to assist you. Such is the premise for Sandra Bullock’s latest romantic comedy film, The Lost City. Joining Bullock is Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe. There is also a cameo appearance by Brad Pitt.

Released on March 25, The Lost City packs a full barrel of laughs with some creative and quirky elements, such as Sandra Bullock hiking through the depths of a dense tropical jungle, wearing a purpleglitter jumpsuit. You will have to watch the movie to see how that works out for her!

The Lost City begins with romance novelist Loretta Sage (played by Bullock) having a case of writer’s block as she struggles to finish the last chapter of her latest novel, The Lost City of D. After being hounded by her outspoken publicist, Beth Hatten, who has no filter (Hatten is played

by Da’Vine Joy Randolph), Loretta finally completes it and prepares to reluctantly embark on a book tour. Joining her on some of the tour stops is the handsome and charismatic model, Alan Caprison (played by Tatum), who is well-

known for being the cover model for her novels, portraying the heroic character, Dash McMahon.

Frustrated and annoyed with how the first tour date went, Loretta storms off by herself, only to end up being kidnapped. Alan tries to follow her and is able to catch a glimpse of Loretta being taken against her will. Determined to get her back, he begins a quest to save her so he can prove to Loretta that he is as heroic as her novel’s character, Dash.

When Loretta is brought to her captor, he is revealed to be an eccentric billionaire named Abigail Fairfax (played by Daniel Radcliffe)—yes, there are jokes about his first name being Abigail. He explains how he has been spending the past few years searching for a lost city, with the hopes of finding an exquisite jewelled necklace amongst the ruins. Prior to becoming a novelist, Loretta and her deceased archeologist husband used to research the history of lost civilizations. When he died,

enough to convince Abigail that she will be an asset to helping him. So off they go, aboard a private jet, to the island where the lost city is.

When Loretta arrives at the excavation site, she is tied to a chair and forced to decipher the ancient treasure map. While this is taking place, Alan and Beth start brainstorming ways to save her. Unable to come up with any logical plan, they enlist the help of a tracker named Jack Trainer (played by Brad Pitt). Using Loretta’s smartwatch to find her location, Alan meets up with Jack, on the island, and together they start their rescue mission. Not all goes as planned and Alan finds himself on his own, rescuing Loretta. Upon arrival to the island, she is met with some travel challenges, but she gets assistance from a funny and weird cargo pilot who is transporting goats that he claims are his friends.

The Lost City is a great film if you are looking for some muchneeded comic relief. The script is original, and the cinematography of the island is very beautiful.

Both Bullock and Tatum have great on-screen chemistry together.

However, it is Brad Pitt’s hilarious cameo that steals the show.

The Lost City is directed by the Nee brothers, who are known for the films Band of Robbers and The Last Romantic. n

FINDING CONNECTIONS TO THEIR NORTHERN ROOTS Lured by adventure, these Francophones came to the Yukon to find pieces of their history that were here all along

ann Herry is drawn to true stories of daring. Ask him about his favourite characters in the Yukon’s Francophone history and he’ll tell you about the people who took chances, cut their own trails and lived their dreams.

“It’s the French-Canadian spirit, going back to the voyageurs,” he said. “We’ve always been pulled toward big adventure.”

Back in the 1970s, Herry became an adventurer himself. He left his hometown in Québec and came to the Yukon, following the mini migration of young people moving to Western Canada from the East.

Herry landed in Elsa in 1979, to work at the United Keno Hill Mine.

While at work, he made friends with older miners who had come from all over North America, and many were Francophones.

“They had interesting stories about their lives and the way they saw Canada,” said Herry. “For the first time, I discovered there were Francophones living all over Canada and they were a part of the history of Canada, so I was intrigued by the stories.”

In 1981, the mine closed and Herry and his colleagues found themselves out of work.

“We were waiting around for the mine to reopen, but there

wasn’t much work in Whitehorse,” he said.

Fuelled by his newly inspired interest in Francophone history, Herry hit the books. He started haunting the public library and discovered there was a rich Francophone history in the Yukon, but no one was talking about it. He wanted to help bring those stories into the light, and so began his lifelong project.

“We started by having meetings and supporting the work done by other Francophones in the community, and we established [the] Association franco-yukonnaise,” said Herry. “It was a huge step forward.”

While Association francoyukonnaise (AFY) looked to the future, Herry realized it was important to talk about the past and the stories that rooted Francophones in the Yukon since 1838. His work got noticed, and Herry started fielding research requests from all over the world.

“There were a lot of Francophones in the Yukon during Klondike Gold Rush times, and lots of their relatives have questions about what happened to these people. It was time-consuming, but I did my best to answer them.”

Herry logged countless volunteer hours and eventually parlayed his passion into a master’s degree in Education in 2002. For his final project he created a book of the Yukon’s Francophone history and a gallery show featuring 20 portraits of Francophones who had a role in Yukon history and society.

Over the past few decades, French-language representation in the Yukon has grown with the addition of dedicated Radio-Canada reporters stationed in Whitehorse and in French immersion schools.

In April 2021, Herry and a group of like-minded history lovers in-

corporated a new society called Société d’histoire francophone du Yukon, as a group that could collect those stories and make them available for people to learn from.

“It’s important to me to share the language and the culture,” said Sylvie Binette, another founding member of the society. “I have a passion for the Yukon’s natural and cultural heritage, and I want to share it with others.”

Like Herry, adventure also lured Binette to the Yukon from Québec. She came in 1985 to become a French-language teacher’s assistant with the national language program, now called Odyssey.

Binette has always been interested in history, but that interest really hit home for her in the early 2000s, while she was walking through the AFY community centre. On the wall of the staircase hung a portrait of a man who looked a lot like her greatgrandfather, Aldéric Binette. After some genealogical research, she discovered that the man in the photograph was named Joseph Eugène Binet (called Gene Binet, in Mayo). And she was related to

By all accounts, Binet had a big heart and he was involved in the community of Mayo. Over the years, he owned a sawmill, hotel and general store, and now the Binet House Museum is located in his former home.

Once Binette found the stories of her distant relative, she felt like she better understood her call to the Yukon.

“For me, it was anchoring, and I felt a connection because no one else in my family moved far away from home,” said Binette. “I now know that I have some roots here.”

In 2017, she was able to deepen

that connection by working on interpretative text for a redesign of the Binet House Museum exhibits.

That same year she also participated in a larger AFY history project, “De fil en histoires; Les personnages d’un territoire,” where she handmade a doll version of her ancestor, Joseph Eugène Binet, for display.

For both Herry and Binette, it’s important to keep the language, culture and stories alive in the Yukon—for their children and for future generations.

“To me, it’s important that we can all live side by side, whether we’re Francophone, Anglophone, Indigenous or from another cultural background,” said Herry. n

lice Park-Spurr explores the interplay of line and shape through the gestural application of paint on canvas in the artwork, Spirit.

Incited by the surroundings of her home on the remote shore of Tagish Lake, Yukon, the Korean-born artist translates her encounters with the natural world into reduced, yet emotive composition, comprised of resonating patterns and colours that punctuate. Comparing her process to that of an archeologist, Park-Spurr excavates the painting’s surface in a meditative practice involving intricate layering, through which depth and movement are achieved. Like an emulation of light filtering through diaphanous material or falling snow obscuring a sunlit lake-side view, Spirit becomes a dance of near and far, warm and cool. Park-Spurr’s refined visual language is like poetry that elevates the most simple element to celestial heights. n

Still, birds should not be caged, let alone imprisoned in a mine, and the practice, which lasted until the late 1990s, is no more.

Now, early-warning systems are, thankfully, feather free.

If someone says you are “a canary” or “a canary in the coal mine,” it is not an insult. It may, rather, be a compliment. It may mean that you are more sensitive to things around you (that you sense things before others do) or that you respond to things more quickly.

The idiom has also been used to reference climate change indicators; for instance, the rate of glacial melting is definitely “a canary in the coal mine” for climate change.

Back to the thought, I’m a canary. It is a good realization. And one I would not have had without the insight of my physiotherapist.

The good news is that we no longer have to say, “Bye-bye, birdie!” n (No canaries were harmed during the writing of this column.)

This lovely girl is energetic and playful. She is medium-sized with a short coat. She would do best in an active home that can give her daily exercise for both her mind and body. She will need to work on training and socializing. She would do well in a home with older children, and with proper introduction, another dog. We do not know how she is with cats.

Getting around can be difficult

There are ar e certain signs that mark the imminent arrival of spring in the Klondike, even when nighttime temperatures are still dipping into the low minus 20s and the snow continues to fall every other day

everal weeks ago we were at 168 percent of our normal accumulation of the white stuff, according to the Yukon’s Hydrologist, but it’s continued to arrive since then and the local Search and Rescue people are saying it’s more like 180 percent now.

They are warning people to stay off the Moosehide Slide, as the snow pack there is living up to the second part of its name.

It’s tempting for snowboarders, but it’s not safe.

Mid-March is the time when getting around town becomes tricky, as the plows and loaders lower the level of the streets, which have risen to be even with

the downtown boardwalks over the winter. In summer, they are at least a foot (30 cm) lower, but the hardpack evens them out in the winter.

The chunks levered up actually provide a geological record of the number of snowfalls and street sandings, easy to read on the thicker pieces.

Roofs in town are thick with snow, and people are being warned not to walk too close to some of the larger buildings in case a couple of hundred kilograms decides to slide off our metal roofs under the increasing warmth of the afternoon sunshine. The snow next to the roof is solid ice by now.

Roof clearance at the Yukon Order of Pioneers (YOOP) Hall Bigger public buildings, like the Yukon Order of Pioneers (YOOP) Hall, have crews busy clearing their roofs. Where that would be more difficult, yellow caution tape warns folks not to get too close, as it does around the corner of King and Third, at Parks Canada’s Old Post Office, one of the town’s iconic buildings.

One sure sign of the season is always the appearance of the IODE Tripod on the ice near the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre. Its movement is taken as the official marker of breakup, and the person who buys a ticket closest to the day, hour and minute will win the Ice Pool Contest, which has

been going on in some form since the Goldrush, but under IODE supervision since 1940.

The ice could go out as early as April 23 (2019) or as late as May 28 (1964), but the trend is late April or early May. A cable attached to a clock at the cultural centre usually manages to stop the clock to mark the time, but there’s always someone out there watching in case that doesn’t happen, as it didn’t two years ago. Last year the clock stopped at 10:28 on May 6.”

Tickets will be on sale until April 15. They used to be sold until April 23, but that changed, for obvious reasons. n

ME AND WILLIE

T

he 1969 spring carnival talent show was the talk of the town. I begged and pleaded, with my mom, for a dollar to go. She reminded me that I would skip next week’s allowance if I took the dollar now, plus, I had to fill the woodbox with firewood.

I assured her that I was cool with it. After I filled the woodbox, she took the dollar bill from her slender purse and tucked it into my pocket. I locked myself into the bathroom and worked a dab of my brother’s Brylcreem hair tonic into my hair and worked it into a ducktail. I put on my coolest shirt, a dark-blue button-down, with stars splashed all over it, and dashed off to the talent show in my pullover parka and mukluks.

The school gym was packed and they shooed all us kids to the front of the gym floor. There was your usual assortment of country and western wannabe’s, onstage, and the odd folkie that didn’t excite us too much. But the big news was a rock and roll band that us kids hadn’t heard before. They’d been playing the forbidden teen dances and it was going to be a treat for us to hear them live.

The announcer called up the next entrants, The Chordells, and the crowd let out a loud cheer.

A dapper-looking Larry Gordon walked out onstage and strapped on an electric guitar, the first I’d ever seen. Jerome Tocher adjusted the volume on his bass amplifier and tested a few notes. Willie Thrasher, in a buckskin vest and

headband, sat behind the drums and twirled his drumsticks in his hands. Me and the kid beside me looked at one another in amazement. “Ho,” we chimed in unison, the Mackenzie Delta equivalent of “wow.” Lead singer Louie Goose loosened the tie around his neck, threw his head back and counted in the song. “One-two, one two three four.” Larry tore into the intro for the Rolling Stones classic, “Satisfaction.” “Dum duh, da da da da da, dum duh, da da da da da.” I looked over at my buddy. We smiled, nodded at one another and began to play air guitar. By the end of the song, all us kids were up on our feet dancing, playing air guitar or banging on a set of drums that only we could see and feel. It was like a revolution; the kids took over for one song.

They ended the song with the outro to end all outros. Willie stood up, kicked the drum set over and threw his drumsticks into the crowd. I had worked my way back from the stage, during my solo, and happened to catch one of his drumsticks. But a big school bully snatched it out of my hands and shoved me to the floor. He was too big for me to fight, so I kicked him in the nuts. He dropped like a sack of hammers and I grabbed my drumstick. I pulled on my parka, without letting go of the drumstick, and hauled ass out of there.

He gave me a daily shit-kicking, until the end of the school year, but I never did give up that drum-

stick. I kept it for years and would play drums on my sister’s tin dollhouse. I didn’t have another drumstick, but I made one out of a willow and beat that tin dollhouse to a pulp.

Years later, as fate would have it, I ended up playing in a country and western band. I wasn’t much of a drummer, but I was a halfdecent guitar player. We played every dive bar, with a dance floor, between the sixtieth and fiftieth parallels. We’d play anywhere they’d pay us—bars, music festivals, weddings, private house parties and even, one time, a divorce party in some guy’s garage.

The booze was always free and there were always heartaches by the number. I ended up with a bad case of the blues, from not knowing how to handle all the booze, and got sent to a treatment centre by the band leader. We were playing a gig in Hay River and he fired me after I showed up drunk and fell off the stage. There was a treatment centre in Hay River, and the band leader promised to hire me back if I completed the treatment program.

The first morning at the treatment centre, I heard somebody playing “All Along the Watchtower” on a beat-up old acoustic guitar. I walked over to check him out. He looked like someone from back home, but I couldn’t place him. “Qunuqitbit,” I greeted, testing my theory.

“Nakurunga,” he replied, putting down the guitar. “Kina Una?”

he asked me, wanting to know my name.

“Dennis Allen,” I replied. “From Inuvik.”

He stood up and put out his hand, “Willie Thrasher,” he said.

“I heard about you.”

I was confused. “Good or bad?”

I asked.

“Good. Somebody said you’re pretty handy on lead guitar. I want to record with an all-Inuit band.”

“I’m in,” I said. Then I told him the story about the drumstick and he laughed his ass off. He told me how they banned him from playing the teen dances, for a month, till he paid off the broken drum set.

I still had a bad case of the jitters, and he sat me down and got me a coffee. “Tell me some war stories,” I asked him, as I tried to hold the cup in my shaking hands. He told me about crisscrossing the country, forty times, on a Greyhound bus, making records, playing with Pete Seeger in upstate New York, jamming with Neil Young, and getting drunk with the Grateful Dead. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Willie’s stories.

There was lots of knee slapping and laughing.

Though we spent a lot of evenings jamming and talking, there were times I wanted to run from the treatment centre. They were forcing us to look at ourselves, and I didn’t like it. But Willie would grab me and pull me aside and tell me what waited out there if I ran.

We completed the treatment program and Willie drifted off toward

BC, with the next south wind. I got a job dishwashing at a greasy spoon, outside of town, and quit the band. They were headed to the Gold Range Hotel, in Yellowknife, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to withstand the temptation of old friends and cold beer. We kept in touch over the years, running into one another here and there.

I was living in Whitehorse when I got a call from Willie. “I got nominated for a Grammy,” he told me.

I thought he was bullshitting me and I laughed it off. But he kept on insisting that he’d been nominated and I had to check the Grammy website. And there it was, in all its pixelated glory. Kevin Howe, of Light in the Attic Records, dug through thrift-store record bins and compiled an album of longforgotten Indigenous songwriters, called Native North America, Volume 1. It was nominated as best archival compilation, along with Bob Dylan. Willie wanted me to drive down to L.A. with him, to attend the ceremony, but neither of us had a pot to piss in. We thought maybe we could busk all the way to L.A., to pay for gas and grub, but I still had two kids to feed, and rent to pay.

Willie lives in Nanaimo, now, and is enjoying a resurgence of his musical career. We still haven’t recorded yet. But we got drunk one night, on near beer, and wrote a song called, “The Post Apocalyptic Talking Eskimo Blues.” Look for it in the record bins in your local thrift store. n

a high vantage point. The person watches trade ships they have sent out to seek fortune, fame, goods, information and communication. We can see three ships in the sea. Some ships are going, some are coming. The water is calm and made golden by the fiery golden-and-orange sunset.

Or is it sunrise? The person wears homespun clothes of good quality.

On their head is a simple ornament, not quite a crown. Three tall wands stand securely around the person. Arm outstretched, they hold one wand as they watch the purple mountains on the distant horizon. The key colours in the card are gold, red-orange and green. There is healthy vegetation on the hill.

Advice: I smiled when this card appeared in our reading about supporting our fathers. Three of Wands is about looking ahead and investing in your dreams while appreciating the present moment, which sounds a lot like advice my dad gives me all the time.

We help make our fathers feel secure by looking ahead, taking the long view. By working to make our dreams a reality, we support our dads too. Our fathers are happy when we pursue our dreams from a grounded and supported place. The card advises finding a balance between risk and stillness. Patiently and steadily invest in your dreams.

Three of Wands is in the suit

of Fire, and fire energy can bring us the power to manifest our desires. There are passion projects on those sailing ships! The dreams they carry will expand your horizon and creative powers.

Being fiery can also cause burnout. Having patience in yourself and your progress is advised here. A slow burn, as opposed to a bonfire! The person in this card is steady, meditative, grounded and hopeful. Keeping efforts steady, more like the turtle than the rabbit, is advised.

Three of Wands tells us our fathers want us to live our dreams and take strong actions towards success, with planning and sound investment. This is not a card about gambling; it’s about a slower kind of earning, with a muchgreater payoff.
