LOVE YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY!

Director of Public Libraries Melissa Yu Schott and outreach librarian Sarah Gallagher pose in front of some of the many fantastic books the Whitehorse Public Library has to offer in both French and English

October is national library month and October 18-23 is Yukon Public Libraries Week!

The theme of this year’s festivities is ‘One Million Possibilities,’ which speaks to the many things you learn, discover and do at your local library! Whitehorse Public Library will be hosting a Seniors Appreciation Day October 21 from 10 AM to 1 PM, with refreshments, snacks and the opportunity to learn about technology available at the library. There will also be an open house at the library October 23 from noon to 4 PM, with contests, draws and prizes.

Outside of books (and who doesn’t love books?) Director of Public Libraries Melissa Yu Schott says the library is trying to showcase some of its other features, including a host of online resources and accessibility tools. The Whitehorse library has recently installed an accessibility station, with a desk that moves up and down, large-print keyboard and easy-to-use mouse for folks with mobility and sight issues. They also have a c-pen reader, which helps folks with diffi culty reading by scanning text, reading it aloud to them and allowing them to look up indecipherable words through a reference guide. These handy devices are also available to check out, which is great for people thinking about buying one and want to try it out fi rst, says Yu Schott.

Libraries across the territory are celebrating Yukon Public Libraries Week. Visit your local library to see what’s going on near you! n
