John Victor Nesgaard October 5, 1941 – April 5, 2022

John was born in Vanderhoof, BC to Johan Viktor Næsgaard (Nesgaard in Canada), originally of Bergen, Norway, and Kathleen (Kay) Rose Nesgaard (née Gibson), originally of Somerset, England. He was one of the first babies born in the new at-the-time (and now old) St. John Hospital. The family moved to Kimberley, BC, where John grew up with two siblings.

In his youth, John was an avid downhill skier and ski instructor, later moving to Banff, BC before making his way North to the Yukon and Cassiar, BC in the 1970s, and finally settling in Atlin, BC. In the North, John worked at many camp jobs, in the gold mines, as a trapper, and as a hunting guide. He was part of “The Colourful 5%” and was known to many friends and colleagues as “Trapper John.” Like many Northerners who prefer the communities, he felt that one person ahead of him constituted a lineup, was disgruntled by the hustle and bustle of “The City”, and preferred being in nature. He truly appreciated the outdoors and enjoyed ice fishing and skidooing on Como Lake, hunting and trapping, hiking with his dogs, boating and camping on Atlin Lake, and the self-reliance required to live in the North. A man of few words with a distinctively warm, yet gruff, and hearty chuckle, John was always there for a friend in need, wanted the best for his community, and loved living in Atlin. In his later years, he actively volunteered by cleaning the campgrounds with his friend Elizabeth Clarke and tending to the graveyard. He received an Outstanding Service Award for many years of diligent, behind-the-scenes community service.

John passed away in his home at 80 years of age in Atlin, BC. He is survived by his dog Pitou; his sister Mavis of Kelowna, BC (previously of Invermere, BC); his children Rick (Tracy) of Sudbury, ON, Britt of Calgary, AB, John of Nanaimo, BC, Miscal (Graeme) of St. John’s, NL, and Tyler of Whitehorse, YT; his grandchildren Mitch (Caroline) of Calgary, AB, Brenna of Ladysmith, BC, and Adam of Calgary, AB; as well as nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins in BC and Alberta. John was predeceased by his parents, his younger brother Rodney, countless wonderful “old-timer” friends, and many canine companions.

John was buried on April 9th in Atlin, BC. Pallbearers included friends Brian Mercer of Whitehorse, YT, Gary Lowe of both Teslin, YT and Atlin, BC, Donald Shaw, Bob Wagner, Marty Robertson, and Dirk Kohlmann all of Atlin, BC. John’s friend Al Beaton flew up from Vancouver, BC for the burial, they had worked together at Erickson Gold in Cassiar. Fellow gold miner Edward “Skip” Hale of Atlin, BC sprinkled gold dust over the casket in tribute. There will be a small celebration of life in July, with notice to follow in June. Thank you to the community of Atlin, BC for its heartwarming support and great care of John in his final years, allowing him to stay in his home and live on his own terms.

The Nesgaard family would also like to collect any stories and photos of John before June 2022 so they have time to compile them for the celebration in July. JAKE’S CORNER

By Paul Lucas The Jakes of this world seem to have a way of leaving a mark on geography. My personal geography was indelibly marked by the drummer in my first band.

Jim Jacox and I have been friends since Christ was in three cornered pants. Our first encounter took place at a high school dance. The drummer in my current band had suddenly started throwing up backstage, and there was no way he was going to be able to play the gig. We were casting about for options, when the principal of the school came up to me and said, “You know, we have a drummer right here at the school. Somebody ... go and find Jake, and tell him to bring his drumsticks.”

Then all of a sudden there he was. Behind the drum kit. Like he’d always been there.

We started up, and everything was going fine ... for a while. Half way through the first set, the kick drum pedal disintegrated, leaving Jake to rediscover why the thing was given that particular handle to start with. Without a moment’s hesitation, he started kicking it with his right foot, and nobody knew anything was amiss.

I shook my head, grinned, and murmured to myself, ‘Yeah, this is the drummer I want to play with.’

— In Arizona, there is a ‘Jake’s Corner’ south of Payson, close to where Highway 188 and Highway 87 come together. It is beautiful country and one I know well, having hiked the high desert around there for many years. It is adjacent to Mogollon rim where author Zane Grey had his cabin.

There is a more than passing connection between the Yukon and Arizona. The air is similar; the light is similar; the skies share the same powder blue translucency. The contours of the land are similar and the flowers (yes Arizona has plenty of flowers) share delicate pastel colours that capture the eye. And they both boast a 'Jake’s Corner.’

Arizona Jake was a Korean vet who, with his wife, staked claim to the area many years before. They were great folks and they built themselves a landmark that became a destination for many of us road warriors in the state.

At one point, I had my old airstream parked at Jake’s Corner for several months, living in this small but iconic trailer park in the Southwest. It was an unforgettable experience. I was part of a culture, part of yet another tribe.

One of the features of the Corner was its fine old bar – a structure consisting of clapboard held together with baling wire and body fluids, where dancers strutted their stuff to a great country band every Saturday night. The sound of steel guitar, truly the heart and soul of the golden era of

country music, and one of my favorite sounds on earth, rang all over the complex. You could belly up to the bar, share a joke or two with Buford the bartender, then drag your beer outside to the terrace - half a dozen rustic picnic tables out back - and howl at the moon with the rest of the cowboys.

Across from the bar was a country store where you could buy all manner of brown food. Millie, the proprietor, had overseen the place for years and she knew everybody. Jake’s was a favourite destination for bikers, many of whom were military pilots from Luke and Davis Monthan air force bases. They all knew Millie and, whenever their flight plan allowed, they would roar over the corner, many times in formation, dip their wings, and she would squeal and wave, convinced they could see her down below.

--At the same time as Arizona Jake was laying claim to his dream in the high desert, 2150 miles (3461 km.) north as the crow flies, Yukon Jake was staking his own claim to a piece of land on the Alaska highway. It was the perfect spot – right where the road to Atlin, Tagish and Carcross branches off at a 90 degree angle.

Jake (Roman) Chaykowsky was a colourful character. He was a Ukranian immigrant who moved north to start a new life. The motel, restaurant and gas station he built at ‘Jake’s Corner’ ended up being a stop-off point for locals and truckers, as well as tourists driving up that endless highway.

As time went by, various other structures sprang up on the property, one of which was a little shelter called the ‘hippy shack’. Jake was known to grunt and complain about all the hippies hitchhiking up the highway, but then he proceeded to build a shed as protection from the elements for those ‘crazy longhairs’ as they waited for rides north or south.

Ahh ... the complex heart of man.

The flagship on the property though, was the Crystal Palace - a building consisting of two floors - a ground floor that featured an indoor pool, and a second floor that was essentially a large balcony with a dance floor, bar, and seating for revelers.

Well, this was a setup begging for hi jinx. It was all too predictable. Once the esteemed patrons gathering on the dance floor had reached the required chemical balance, some wag would decide to make the plunge over the balcony rail and into the pool. Inevitably, he or she was followed by the rest.

The sight was inspiring. Bodies hit the water one after the other. Blam. Smack. Hats and boots flew willy nilly and party dresses flared like parachutes. Whooping and hollering, the dancers poured over the rail like lemmings.

And the band played on.

--A word of advice: If you run across a Jake of any sort in your travels, brace yourself. You are in for a ride.
