Caroline Drury Takes That Voice in a New Direction

C

aroline Drury sings Love Potion #9.

That’s all anyone needs to know before deciding to buy her newest CD, Loving You, Loving Me. Love Potion #9 was popular two decades before the 24-year-old former Yukoner was born. It is a fun song … but it can be something entirely different once Drury’s crystal, clear voice rolls out, “He broke my little bottle of (wait for it) Love Potion #9.”

Yukoners know Drury from Peters Drury Trio, a jazz trio that later became a quartet, that showcased a voice that always found that extra note to add so much more texture to a song.

Love Potion #9 was suggested to her by Rick Kilburn, the CD’s producer and bassist — “That’s why it’s so great to have mentors a few years wiser than you to point you to great songs” — to round out a selection that is taking her in a new direction.

Loving You, Loving Me is Drury’s first solo CD and she wanted to experiment. And she wanted it to be accessible. So it is more pop than her fans are accustomed to hearing from her.

“It’s not strictly pop and it’s not strictly jazz,” she says from her Vancouver home. “I like to say it’s acoustic, intimate pop with lots of jazz influence.

“When you say ‘pop’, people usually think of overproduced, over amplified, over processed music,” she says. “That is no where near

Simpson says Drury is “definitely stretching her wings.

“I think Caroline’s new CD is great and represents a new direction for her,” he says.

“She has a very natural sense of time and I think she will just get better and better.”

But Drury knows that will take time. She compares her career to a pre-schooler entering kindergarten: “It’s a new beginning.”

Instead, she wanted to “make it kind of funky and keep it with the acoustic feel” and still keep a jazz flavour.

Joining her on this journey through other genres are Kilburn and Miles Black, who can be heard on the CD playing guitar and piano.

“I pinch myself every time I get on stage with these guys because, not only are they amazing musicians, but they are so willing to share their wealth of information and they love to teach and help you learn.”

The three wrote eight songs for the CD and Black has brought other songs to her, saying, “(This) would be just perfect for your voice”.

One song, Fragile, is a Sting tune that was chosen for its universal and beautiful lyrics. Loverman is a well-known jazz standard and is one of her favourites. And, Love Potion #9, was chosen just because, “It is such a great tune.”

I’m Just Saying...

Reporting on the FUN SIDE from the INSIDE

I

t has been brought to my attention that the term, “Mount Ernie” is derogatory. Let me go on the record to say I have used the term, liberally, as a term of endearment.

You see, I like the hill at Shipyards Park. I generally like parks with hills.

I have many wonderful memories of having picnics at Zwick’s Island Park in Belleville, Ont. That park of my childhood is really a series of hills — “Shall we lay out the blanket on this hill or that one?” — and each one had its own view — “Shall we have our picnic overlooking the Bay of Quinte or the other side for a good look at the stage shell where the Family Brown is about to start playing?”

— and each one was its own world.

Without Mount Ernie, Shipyards Park would be one, big, flat area. Hills create four areas … one for each side.

I have been shocked at how many people automatically don’t like Mount Ernie. “It blocks the view of the river from 2nd Avenue,” I have been told. Really? You can’t see the Yukon River from 2nd Avenue even if you were walking on stilts. And isn’t the sight of children tobogganing down its side better than looking at the far bank of the Yukon River?

And then there are those who say it blocks the police’s view of public drinking and drug deals. Well, I’m glad it blocks my view of such things. Even without the hill, I wouldn’t want any of my loved ones to be taking a walk in that area … not yet, at least. And, during the summer when the park is used more and more by all kinds of folk, all of that activity will go back to the alleys because there won’t be privacy anymore.

Let us all use our imagination and cast our minds forward a few months. Those of you who complain about their views being blocked should remember that it works both ways. In July, when you are soaking up some rays along the river’s edge, the hill will block your view of 2nd Avenue.

You don’t have to see Tim Hortons, it will still be there when you need a coffee.

And when you are watching a performance in the amphitheatre, you will be grateful for the seating built up the one side of the hill. And you will be glad there is a sound barrier between you and 2nd Avenue.

Need one more reason to embrace Mount Ernie? How about this: It hides your view of that depressing statue.

OK, that snide comment deserves to be fleshed out. If I had the choice, the statue would stay right where it is because it is doing its job: It is making people think and it is making people feel. However, I would like to see two more statues erected showing the next two stages of recovering from despair.

Sometime, while scraping together four credits in photojournalism, I learned that the best sports photos show the moment just before the peak of action. It is assumed that the reader’s eye will finish the action. This must hold true for statutes as well and I would hope the two men will be depicted just as they start to run into the park for a good time.

Perhaps to climb Mount Ernie and roll down the other side like my twin brother and I used to do in Zwick’s Island Park.

hose of you who took a cruise during the Spring Break raise your hands … not so fast, Hookey.

But don’t feel sorry for me because I didn’t miss a thing.

You all listened to gurgling rivers on those tropical islands and you marvelled at the beauty of salt-water fish ... so did I. And you probably had a back massage and read lots of books ... me, too. And, in the evening you enjoyed the night sky ... yup. And, oh the entertainment you must have watched ... doesn’t compare to what I watched.

12:38 Downstairs at Mac’s Fireweed Books, there is a leather wing back chair in the Antiquarian. It is surrounded by old, out-of-print northern books that are lit up so nicely. I could pick any one out and read it. “Only five or 10 people use that chair a week,” said one staffer. “I wish there were more.” Off at 12:42.

12:43 Into Midnight Sun Gallery and Gifts and to the back of the room, there is a chair set up in front of a TV/VCR combo. A video of Yukon’s Aurora Borealis was already keyed and I just had to hit the play button. I then watched the Northern Lights in comfort. As I was leaving, at 12:48, the sales clerk said she could get one of two Yukon Quest videos for me if I was finished that one. “Next time,” I told her.

12:05 Arrived at the Elijah Smith Federal Building. Sat on the ledge of a pond and watched the gold fish and listened to the gurgle of the waterfall. Over by the Commissionaire’s Desk there was a pile of our little magazine, but I had read it already, so I picked up The Atlin Claim. I left at 12:11.

12:49 Time for some entertainment. I went into Erik’s Audiotronic and watched a music video on its 42-inch, high definition television that was powered with $30,000 worth of audio equipment. It was like I was sitting in that homey’s crib. On my way at 12:52.

12:13 At Paradise Alley I covered my eyes as I hurried past the sinful selection of chocolates. At the back, I found the stuffed chair and sat down with the plush dog on my lap.

From that spot, I could watch the salt-water aquarium and the fireplace (it was electric, but still made me feel cozy).

And there was a juke-box that allowed me to listen to any Yukon musician I wanted. The staff told me I could even play the piano if I had time. Perhaps I will buy a how-to book and give it a try next week. I left at 12:18.

12:53 It was my first time in Zola’s Café Dore and it was, “Wow.” I mean it, “Wow.” But enough of that, I was running late, so I plugged a loony into the Internet-ready computer and checked my emails. It was only my mother, so I scooted out at 12:58.

And I did it all on my lunch hour. Here’s how I did it:

12:20 Stopped at the bank. God, how I love cash machines.

A young man in a suit, with a CIBC name tag, even held the door open for me. Talk about pampered. In and out by 12:22.

12:25 At Alpine Health, in the Horwood’s Mall, I dragged the anti-gravity massage chair over to the SAD Lites for the super-bright, full-spectrum healing rays against the lingering Seasonal Affective Disorder. And, oh my, that chair.

Little rollers started massaging me right between the shoulder blades and then slowly worked down to the small of my back and back up again. The owner, James Black, told me he had more cushy models coming in and there is even a pad, for $180, that I can take anywhere. For some reason, I was now behind schedule as I left at 12:35.

1:00 Back at the office (I swear to God, one hour, I wasn’t late, I was on time) as refreshed as if I had just returned from a cruise ... and no airport terminals in between.

Fondue in the Forest is a Social Event

T

Wolf’s Den Restaurant does it the European way

he fondue is one of the most social of meals. It requires the diner to wait between bites and, thus, has lots of opportunity to chat with others at the table.

So it is no surprise that Wolf’s Den Restaurant is owned and operated by a Swiss couple, Harry and Yvonne Ochsner. You see, in Europe, restaurants expect guests to spend the entire evening lazing over their meals. A 30-minute wait between courses or drinks is standard there.

The Ochsners wouldn’t try that here because they would be accused of offering slow service to their North American customers. But the fondue has the same result as diners are forced to slow down and enjoy their meal and each other’s company.

You know this is a European restaurant as you approach it. Just a couple of kilometres past the Carcross Cutoff on the Alaska Highway, it is located at the Caribou RV Park. The wheelchair accessible building is buried just enough in the trees that you would never know it is there unless you went looking for it. It looks like a logbuilt, Swiss chalet and it is lit up so nicely from the outside that it seems almost magical.

Inside, your eye is hit with a pine ceiling, pine, floor, pine window trim and pine furniture. The Ochsners are nice, nice people and you instantly feel welcome in their “home”.

From the outside, Wolf’s Den Restaurant looks like a beautifully lit ski chalet … dows. Quiet moments can be spent looking at the far-off mountains change colour with the dying day and watching various woodland critters bounce on branches that almost touch the windows.

My LDC chose a seat closest to the wood-burning stove and that was enough to completely set the mood for this quiet evening … until she saw the cloth napkins: “I feel like I’m being pampered,” she said, admiring the design.

The salad arrived and it was like nothing I have ever seen. It was a colourful collage of individual piles with our salad dressing drizzled over each. Arranged like an artist’s palette, there were carrots, marinated beets, cucumbers, tomatoes and pickled cabbage all around a garden salad.

Harry explained that this was the European way of serving a salad, but not all restaurants in Europe do it this way.

Then it was time for the main course. I had called ahead at

393-3968 the day before, and asked for the Fondue Chinoise. Yvonne needs a day to shop for all of the ingredients to ensure they are fresh. And, there it was, arranged on a platter were raw beef, pork and chicken. On another platter there was an assortment of mushrooms and pickles to round out the meal.

OK, so we speared our choice of meat and placed it in the pot to cook. We then pre-scooped our sauces onto the compartmentalized plates to be ready to dip.

It was all home-made – banana curry, spicy tomato, pepper, herbs and spices, bourguignon and, our favourite, garlic and herbs.

It was fun. We chose different meats and different sauces. And when we weren’t talking about

neath of it. We chose the Chinoise because, instead of grease, it uses a hot bouillon that is healthier.

Long colour-coded forks were placed in front of us and Harry gave us a lesson on how to cook our own meal: “Try it, it will be rare or well done, you will get the hang of it.”

When we were done, long before the platter was empty, Harry came over with an egg and cracked it open into our bouillon to make a soup of it. It was delicious and fun.

Before we had dessert, Harry took us over to an empty table where a Raclette was set up. It’s like a long, open toaster oven. He said it is another way for diners to make their own meals. Each person cuts a piece of cheese and places it under the element in an individual tray. When it softens, you put it on your plate and eat it with potatoes, pickles, onions, bacon and fruits.

Back to our table, we shared an Apple Strudel. Again, it was homemade and it was served in a pool of warm vanilla sauce.

As nice and relaxing as the evening was, my LDC and I decided it would be much more fun to come back with another couple … for the socializing.

MusicYukon Wears Many Hats

e’s a promoter and an agent and a business consultant and an office manager and an investment broker.

“Bag Man,” Mark Smith corrects that last one. “Really, I am just a Bag Man.” Smith’s business card actually labels him as the executive director of MusicYukon, an organization that helps recording artists with the business end of their developing careers.

And, as the executive director, it is his job to write proposals for funding.

Grant Simpson, MusicYukon’s project/resource manager, is the one who works with recording artists to turn that music into money.

That is something that requires a business consultant: “Making a CD is only 30 percent of the business venture,” says Smith. “You have 2,000 CDs in your basement … how do you get 10 of them to the Virgin store in Toronto?”

Perhaps the answer is to go digital. “Things are rapidly turn-

But, before anyone is willing to deal with an artist, Smith and Simpson need to be promoters.

At any one time from Tuesday to Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., members can be found sitting at a computer as they build a website for themselves.

At the other computer, someone else might be submitting a posting to SonicBids, a company from Boston that maintains a registry for radio stations, night clubs and festivals.

There could also be others in the office who are working the phones and using the photocopier to set up a tour.

“Steve Slade set up 47 gigs from this office,” Smith says proudly.

It’s a good deal for the members since it only costs $20 a year for those over 19 and $5 for those younger.

Besides the funky office – hardwood floors and big windows in a heritage warehouse renovated from the inside – members benefit from Simpson’s years of experience in the music business.

He tries to maintain regular hours, but Smith says he often takes appointments at other times, too.

“We are so busy I’m trying to find money to hire another person,” says Smith. “We are a victim of our own success.”

And, this year, the cover of the sampler has a photo that was contributed by the Department of Tourism and Culture.

It’s a tie-in that proves that “Bag Men”, like Smith, don’t just collect cash.

MusicYukon opened its doors to the resource centre last September with a promise of three years of funding from Economic Development’s Strategic Industries program.

Although the Tourism and Culture Department has a hand in its funding, Smith is happy to be considered more of an industry by the government because, really, it is.

“Sound recordings — cultural industries — are not about the art, it’s about the product.

“We are making widgets for the ear.”

The music business is tough to break into for a Yukoner because of the distances to major markets, but Smith hopes the help

French, Ukrainian and Hillbilly Tunes Heat Up Yukon Night

I

n my last column I lamented the public’s lack of interest in getting up on the open stages of Whitehorse and performing.

This past week I attended a talent night hosted by the Association Franco-Yukonnaise that proved this whining premature.

The event brought together the French community in Whitehorse for an evening of family fun and a mixer that allowed the Moms and Dads to mingle and let off steam.

I came here to witness my friend’s daughter perform a skit with friends.

This small stage, in the heart of the French community in Whitehorse, was alive with talent … with children of all ages literally falling about the stage.

The evening started with dinner and drinks, conversation and some very yummy desserts.

Once the tables were cleared and packed away and the chairs turned around, the MC started introducing the performers.

The evenings fare included toddler ballet, a guitarist, a minor

miner and his mandolin, several poets, plays, dancing, singing and skits in all shapes and costumes.

Even though my understanding of the French language only allows a pathetic shamble through a fog of disconnected words, I needed no translation to understand the various performances.

The acts were judged, none to harshly, by audience reaction and after an interval of deliberation, all participants were given a prize.

A splendid time was had by all.

When I see a poster that states “Ukie Girls Do It Best” my interest is peaked.

Heading to the Backwater I found local performer Steve Slade warming up the room with a set of folk music accompanied by fiddler Amelia Rose. The room was filling up by time they finished, as is the nature of the warm-up acts audience.

The main act was worthy of the advertised “blues meets bluegrass” and “hot”. Both Rose on fiddle and Ana Bon-Bon on accordion held down the stage with sexy, understated cool music.

Rose and Bon-Bon are both excellent musicians and interpreted Lead Belly’s Bourgeois Blues and bluegrass classic Cluck old’ Hen in a unique style. A rousing rendition of Joshua Fought

The Battle Of Jericho with an eastern European rhythm roused memories of the motherland.

Plump women with accordions stir my inner Ukrainian. Enough said.

Back to the Discovery Blues Bar for an evening of country rockabilly with Vancouver’s, Cousin Harley.

Even with an admitted cold, guitarist Paul Pegat was in fine form.

All in attendance seemed transfixed by the spectacle of this individual running his hands up and down the fret board of his big ol’ Gibson hollow body elec-

tric, effortlessly pulling licks and chords out of the air.

This is a tight combo with a big classic 50’s rockabilly tone.

A sound evocative of Chet Atkins country fused with Les Paul jazz pulled the group through some very interesting musical styles.

With Pete Turland on bass and Steve Taylor, in a fantastic polka dot shirt on drums, this group had the joint jumping and cheering all night long.

Lesbians and mobsters and flicks, oh my!

ince the Oscars are less than a month old, I decided this week’s column should be about movies and, in particular, about movies that are well known in the gay as well as the straight world.

One of the most famous is called Desert Hearts. It is derived from the 1964 novel by Jane Rule called Desert of the Heart. The movie, is still the top grossing lesbian flick of all time. The original novel was unique in that it was uncharacteristically optimistic for its time.

Maurice is a Merchant Ivory production, from an E.M. Forster novel, that explores a young man’s homosexual identity in 18th century England. In the same vein is Wilde, the story of the famous writer and wit, Oscar Wilde who suffered much persecution for his homosexuality.

Bound is a lesbian flick from the mid 80s. The joke in the gay community is that it is responsible

for a whole generation of women coming out of the closet. It is a sexy film-noiresque flick about two women and a few mobsters … definitely worth a rental at the video store.

A list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Boys Don’t Cry and The Crying Game, both of which were given an Oscar nod for their efforts. Boys explores gender identity and love in a heart breaking way. Crying Game is essentially a thriller but also forces the audience to look at beauty and love in a new way.

GALA had their monthly meeting this past weekend. On the top of our agenda was a Spring Thaw dance that is tentatively scheduled for May 7, pending

confirmation on the venue booking. As the name suggests, it is a dance designed to celebrate the arrival of spring so the theme will be tropical. Attendees are encouraged to wear their finest or funkiest or tackiest tourist outfit.

Coconut shell bikinis are always appreciated. We are planning on having several blenders working overtime making tropical drinks.

The straight community is welcome to attend this function as well. I will have more details as we near the date.

The Cars are the Stars of Gran Tourismo 4 “The most fun you can have with your clothes on.”

olyphony Digital had produced another winner with Gran Tourismo 4 on the PlayStation 2. Improving on its predecessors, GT4 offers an astounding 700-plus vehicles, 50plus tracks and more races than any sane person would want to drive. With a racing simulator this involved, it’s a good thing sanity

Thankfully, arcade mode is only a small portion of the game, the majority of it lies within the career mode.

A new feature to the career mode of the GT series is the ability to import credits and/or licenses earned in GT3. Racing aficionados might turn their nose up at this feature but, for players who

is left out of the loop and racing fanatics are appealed to instead of casual gamers.

I ruefully admit that when it comes to a “real-life physics” racing sim like GT4, I cannot drive at the breakneck, competitive level required. To be honest, I can hardly negotiate the easiest of tracks. In order to fully explore this new title, I had my good friend, Cory Goruick, act as my courtesy driver.

GT4 has the now-standard option to play in either arcade or simulation (career) mode. My first of only two criticisms of this game is about the arcade mode. In previous GTs, the arcade mode gave an indication of what the player was accomplishing. GT4 does not show players how close they are to unlocking the next car or track.

It works on a point system, which is scaled up or down as difficulty increases or decreases. More points earned will open more cars and tracks, but the number of points required is not displayed.

This gave me the feeling I was not really achieving anything within the arcade mode.

want to get started quickly, the option is there. Some players may consider this cheating, but keep in mind a player can only transfer credits or licenses they have previously earned.

The stars of all GT titles are the vehicles themselves and in GT4 they don’t just shine, they are brilliant. The lighting effects are phenomenal and it is incredible to see the scenery reflected off the windshield and panels of the vehicles. The scenery itself is a huge step up from GT3. From the roadside fans, to the landscape detail, this game is highly polished except for one noticeable flaw … which brings me to my other complaint: There is occasional frame skipping at times in the game, notably at the menu selections for race starts or in the replays.

This is an issue I was surprised to find because Polyphony Digital has always taken pride in releasing a quality product and this bug should have been fixed prior to release.

GT4 not only looks great, it also sounds the way the cars do in reality. I experienced the throaty

rumble of the fabled Shelby and winced at the whine of a supercharged Daihatsu. When a player upgrades their exhaust, they can hear the difference the next time on the track. The large number of audio tracks, to listen to while rocketing along the pavement, dirt, or ice and snow tracks, also helps to keep players in the zone.

The final touch added to GT4 is the photo gallery. Players are given the ability to photo shoot the car of their choice in one of many environments. This feature is not something I would ever play with, but the enthusiasts who do explore it will find it easy to master and can keep their favourite shots to show their friends.

GT4 gets the nod from me as the best of racing sims available.

And the opinion of my driver, Cory?: “The most fun you can have with your clothes on.”

nd the thaw continues. Its only mid-March, but the snow in Whitehorse is almost gone and the theme from the Twilight Zone goes through my head every morning as I splash through puddles on my way to work.

But let us not bemoan the impending planetary catastrophe known as global warming, let us rejoice instead in the renewal of spring. The sun is shining. The leaves will come out in another eight weeks. Something really stinks underneath the back seat of my car. All the usual signs of spring are here.

Now, in the 21st century urban landscape, melting snow can only signal one thing — the return of skateboarders. You may have already noted their arrival on your almanac calendar.

Yes, it is that time of year again. Along with the geese and the awakening bears, the skateboarders have returned. Pale and disoriented in the spring sunshine, their winter hibernation in dark basements and bedrooms with Game Boys and X-Box’s has ended early and now they are out on the

My son is one of that very skateboarding breed, and I, for one, am happy to finally have his butt off my couch. After he’s done unleashing his angst with his skateboard on the streets of Whitehorse, he returns home hungry, tired and actually quite subdued.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the animal known as the Common Skateboarder, I have assembled some information on their habits along with some tips on how to handle any surprise encounters.

skateboarders look scary. If you must, approach then from behind for nothing can look more harmless than a male with his pants hanging down below his butt. Just think of Sanford and Son and you’ll be OK. If you do mistakenly engage in conversation with a skateboarder, do not remind them how much they have grown or how you met them once at their Mom’s house. An embarrassed skateboarder is a dangerous skateboarder who will most likely go home and slam their bedroom door more than once.

When mumbling skateboarders approaches you outside of a store,

they want you to buy them cigarettes. Do not buy them smokes if they only have nickels, dimes and pennies. Insist on a $20 bill or higher — this will scare them away.

Skateboarders are usually hungry and can often seem intimidating while they are seeking nourishment. If you ever feel threatened, hold out a piece of fruit, like and apple or pear, as real food will scare them off. Organic food is especially effective. Do not keep food items like Pizza Pops or Fruit Loops in your pockets for this will attract skateboarders.

But most of all, be kind to skateboarders and help protect their environment. Donations to “Save the Skateboarder” can be mailed directly to me c/o What’s Up Yukon. The more money I can give him, the longer my son stays out of the house.

Tis the Season to Raise Tally N

ow that the days are longer than the nights again (although sometime in January at –54 we thought that this might never happen this year) our thoughts at the brewery turn to Beer Season. We don’t think of the seasons here like “winter” and “summer”, as much as we think of “Beer Season” and “Not Beer Season”. Beer Season is Victoria Day until Thanksgiving, when the days are long and (with any luck) warm, and the Yukon is full of tourists.

Here at the brewery, we involve ourselves in tourism in the Yukon as much as possible. Right now, we have one person sitting on the Senior Marketing Committee of the Yukon Tourism Marketing Partnership, and we have one person sitting on the Board of Directors of the Yukon Tourism Industry Association. The brewery won a tourism award from TIA a couple of years ago for its efforts

Tourists give Yukoners a bad name

in supporting the industry. Sometimes we get funny looks when we are in the tourism circles, but it is really a no-brainer from our point of view.

Tourists drink beer. Pretty much all of them, from what we can see. And there are some who seem to have made it their mission to make up for those who don’t.

Let’s look at the numbers: The average consumption of beer in Canada is about 60 litres per person per year. The consumption in the Yukon is about 110 litres per person per year, the highest in Canada. The next highest is New-

foundland at about 80 litres per person per year — another place with a vibrant tourist industry and a relatively small population. We figure that the difference in the Yukon between our consumption and the average for Canada is pretty much due to the large number of tourists we get compared to our population.

If this was the case, then we should see that difference between winter and summer.

Using data for Canada, total beer consumption in June/July/August 2004 was just under 1-1/2 times as much as January/February/March

2004 (see why we call it Beer Season?). Here in the Yukon, the same comparison gives us nearly double the consumption — this is why we use capital letters on Beer Season.

In the Whitehorse Liquor Store during those months of June, July, and August, we have the No. 1-selling 6-pack in bottles. We sell more 12 packs and 24 packs of bottles than any of the major brands except Molson Canadian (they beat us by a hair this past summer). About nine out of 10 pints of premium draught beer is one of our products. We still have catching up to do in cans, but we are getting there.

This is not to say that we don’t have a loyal local following.

Throughout the year, our products account for more than one out of every four bottles of beer that leave the Whitehorse store. Do we have local support? Well, in Janu-

ary, that number is nearly one in three bottles — so, in the depth of winter, we are above our annual average. I’d say we have local support, in spades. Thanks for that, by the way.

But at the end of the day, with our small population, even our dynamite support would make it difficult to finance growth. That doubling of beer consumption that happens in the summer, largely due to the influx of people, gives us the fuel to expand.

And there is something satisfying watching someone from California or Germany or Japan leave the brewery after a tour in July, knowing that they are helping fund our sponsorships of sports and cultural events the following winter. It seems somehow poetic.

INUVIK esidents of Inuvik love their muskrats so much, they named a jamboree after them.

Muskrat Jamboree is a celebration of spring and one of its highlights is … muskrat skinning.

“They trim them from the hind legs and open them up,” says Gerry Kisoun, vice chair of the organizing committee. “Our ladies can skin them in one minute.

“They are fat right now since they have lived under the water and have been filling up nicely.”

Another treat is the “Eskimo Ice Cream”.

Kisoun says it is boiled caribou meat that has been frozen and cut up into squares: “You need a lot of energy when walking the trapline.”

Then there are the usual activities of a spring carnival (when there is still snow on the ground, of course) such as dog mushing, snowmobiling and snowshoe races.

“We turn the river in front of Inuvik into a playground,” says Kisoun.

Inside, there will be fun and games. The Inuvialuit Drummers and Dancers will perform and there will be an old-time dance with fiddle players.

The kids will have their own little carnival that includes a karaoke and a talent show.

“It’s an alcohol-free and drug-free carnival,” says Kisoun.

“Do something with your kids, don’t sit in front of the television.

“Smile at each other.”

The Muskrat Jamboree runs from April 8 to 10.

The fiddle of Joe Loutchan rules

T

here is something about that lone fiddle playing in a room: The ambience, the mood, the emotions, all ride on its notes.

There is something about that lone couple dancing in front of the band: Swept up in the music, comfortable in each other and oblivious to the chatter of the room.

It is a world ruled by Joe Loutchan. And, once a week, every Thursday, he rules the 98 Hotel.

His fiddle grabs the room and throws it in the air like a giggling child.

Fiddle players always wear a white hat. And the distressed brim of Loutchan’s shelters his fiddle as he draws his entire body into the bow that pulls clear notes from the string.

Beer is the beverage of choice this night. It is held by regulars hunkering in their tight groups, wearing their uniform of jean jacket and baseball cap; and it is

held by the group of out-of-towners (betrayed by clothes that are too casual and too clean); and beer is held by the YTGers, wearing their $100 jeans, who are enjoying a real bar in the real Yukon.

Weekends are busy in the 98 Hotel and so are Thursdays because Northerners love their fiddle music.

“Most Natives love fiddle music,” says Loutchan.

“People come from all over the countryside; people come from Old Crow; it’s a friendly bar and it’s the same bunch every time.

“I’ve played Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk and it is all fiddle music; they won’t hire you if you don’t play fiddle.”

Loutchan has played at the 98 Hotel for 30 years. “Merv Bales joined me and it was just the two of us — him on guitar and me on

the fiddle — for years it was just the two of us.

“Then a bass guitar player came along, Joe Allain, he’s been here five years so now we got a three-piece going.

“The wife (Nicole Morgan) got learning the fiddle and guitar and

must to play if you’re a fiddle player in these parts.”

The song is over and each band member turns as one to pull a long drink from nearby glasses. Loutchan now switches to the guitar.

“I played the guitar before the fiddle, but it wasn’t much of a challenge.

“If you pull a bow over the strings of a fiddle all you’ll get is noise. You need the right pressure, the right angle and the right speed.

“Your hands are going, your feet are going, they have to be tapping to keep the right time with the music.

“The Métis and the French get both feet tapping.

“I have to practise two hours every day or else my fingers will cramp up. I have to keep my hands

It’s an exciting sound.” filled in here and there until Merv got throat cancer and can’t play in a smoky bar. Now she’s fulltime.”

The tattooed waitress with a ready smile tilts her ear to the stage and pronounces, “It’s 9:30 …

“It’s the Red River Jig,” says Loutchan afterward. “That’s a

“It’s awkward, everything about it is awkward. It’s the damnest instrument, but once you get it going, it’s quite interesting.”

But Loutchan does not like the fiddle he is playing tonight. He doesn’t like any of them.

“It’s a lifetime curse finding a fiddle you like. I have 13 of them and I’m still not happy with them.

There’s always something wrong.”

But there is something about that lone fiddle playing in a room.

“It’s the sound of it. It’s an exciting sound,” says Loutchan.

“As a little kid, I heard fiddle tunes on the radio and I didn’t even know what it was — I just liked the sound of it.

Fishead Stew is as Elusive as its Sound Musical surprises at the Boiler Room

ishead Stew is back, another resurrection of the bluegrass/swing/folk/whathave-you band.

Recently, at the Boiler Room, it was Birch Kuch on the clarinet leading with a Buddy Holly tune which fell into a klezmar roma lead with Amelia Slobogean sending her fiddle all over in sound and scope.

Kuch, Rick Sward, Slobogean, Matt King and guest mandolin player Bob Hamilton showed the diversity and strength of the musicians in Whitehorse.

Fishead Stew is no normal fourpiece band. With Slobogean on the fiddle and Kuch giving a filling sound with the clarinet, King on standup bass and Rick Sward on guitar, FHS produces a much different sound than the average bluegrass band.

FHS is a band that can’t make up its mind if its members are going their separate ways or head down the road to play another gig.

They have broken up four or five times and yet they keep coming back together and creating music.

It does help they are all good friends.

Over 50 people came to partake in the eclectic style that leaps from klezmar to roma to northern blues … sometimes in the same tune. That standup bass lurks along in the background never really stepping forward on a solo, yet King can be found in some of the best bands the Yukon has to offer. Kuch is another of that lot, he can also be found in the local jazz trio when he isn’t working that day job or being a

session musician. Slobogean saws the fiddle, contributing to vocals and generally makes the stage come alive with the sound of her fiddle, from the moan of the blues to the soft sound of a love ballad.

Sward, songwriter/guitar player, leads with much of the vocals and you can tell when he is really focused on his licks: his tongue slips out as he tries to focus.

Hamilton, of the band Hungry Hill, dropped in with his mandolin to play a few tunes filling the sound of the band put even more.

dolin gives to so many songs; it acts as a snare giving that sound a real punch to drive into the bar. By the end of the 11 o’clock set, the bar was filled with only a few empty tables, not a bad draw for a Sunday night for the Boiler Room. Then, all of a sudden, Hamilton and Slobogean started to trade licks, starting a conversation with their instruments where one would speak in a riff and the other would come back at it with an additional riff. Kuch jumped in and the three of them held a conversation which totally delighted the ear. The smiles on the face of the band members reflected the personal joy they had in the jam.

What is so impressive with this band is they know the roots of their music. Their album collections are legendary. They have such a voracious appetite for music, wine, wo/man and song … which can be changed to wine, wo/men and another stack of old vinyl to go through to see what treasure is there.

A strong stage presence, excellent musical skills and a broad range of knowledge make this band a perennial Yukon favourite.

Sward has a stash of songs both traditional and modern, but his love of traditional drinking songs from around the world gives any sober man a good reason for another libation.

Lost in Translation: Making Movies with “The Duddy Kravitz of Tokyo” It all started with a voice mail message left by a then-unknown cell phone caller on my phone at home. t sounded something like this: “Hurro…Rod…this is Haru.

(Long pause…) Please call me at 333-…” After that, my ability to decipher went downhill faster than the ratings of a CBC television comedy.

It turns out Haru is a guy who normally lives in Tokyo where he directs segments for an independent television production company (or as near as I could glean from his explanation on the phone). Turns out I have a camera he likes to use. Turns out I said he could use it. Turns out his message was the start of the closest thing I’ve done to real film making in a long time.

Haru is a skinny short guy.

Well, shorter than I, and that’s pretty short.

He sports a Fu-Manchu moustache with a soul patch. He told me he decided to come to Canada to produce some dramatic films and learn some English.

Enterprising fellow that he is, last year about this time, he got a one-year work permit. Haru came over to Vancouver and shot two short films … in English. And he wrote the scripts himself. Then he went to Calgary and shot another film, same approach.

than Jean Chrétien’s. That’s what I call chutzpah. I asked him why he came to Canada to shoot, when he could have stayed in the country of Kurosawa and saved a bundle on plane fares. “Vancouver is like Hollywood North,” he said. “And,” he added, “I wanted to learn more English.” To which I had no response. But Haru is like the Duddy Kravitz of Tokyo. And people like me find it hard to say “no” to well-meaning ambition.

The next thing I know I’m standing out near Marsh Lake in a windstorm with a bunch of people I barely know, tripping over cords, up to my tookus in snow, and waiting, waiting, waiting while the shots get set up and we translate the dialogue in Haru’s script into an English that doesn’t sound like something that was cribbed from the instruction manual for a Korean power drill.

I learned some things about filmmaking while working with Haru. First, before you get frills such as a camera or a microphone or friends who will work for free, invest in a quality cell phone. I thought they were just for those stressed-out urbanites you see when you get out at the regional gate at Vancouver International.

Photo: rod Jacob two days and if you don’t come home tonight, you will no longer be considered “a spouse”. You can use it to find the crew if you fall asleep somewhere and they just up and leave you. (Which I have, most vehemently, never done.)

Go ahead, make my day. Phone the director. He/she will be particularly pleased to hear from you if they’re in the middle of a shot.

And I once again must protesteth too much: I do not know this from experience.

And, when you’re making a film, there’s apparently always somebody to be picked up at the airport. And they are coming in on flights you probably never knew existed. At weird hours of the night. From countries you’ve never visited. Like Switzerland.

And if you don’t have crucial skills such as focusing a camera or act-

ing, it’s probably you who will be picking up those visitors.

Rod’s new rules of film and money: a) There’s good money to be made in film. That is, there’s good money to be made in film if you’re so rich that you need a tax write-off. b) There’s good money to be made in film…just not in this country. c) Film and money go together like the birds and the bees. Or more precisely, film and spending money go together like the birds and the bees.

I also learned that somewhere in the world, at all times, there is somebody throwing a hissy fit on a film shoot about some petty aspect of that production.

You think about all those movies being made in Hollywood. All the ones being made in Bollywood. All those Japanese ones with monsters that crush cities. All those Canadian ones about darkness and weird sex and car crashes. And bus crashes. (And those are the comedies.) Yup, if you sum total all the known movies currently in

production, somebody somewhere in this wide, cruel world is throwing a hissy fit at this very moment about some actor’s line, or some camera angle, or some payment being late. And somewhere some cinematographer is practising the pull focus on a great shot, and some screenwriter is revising the dialogue that will slay the critics of a great nation, and some actor is hitting the line just right.

One of these days, Haru will call back: “Herro…Rod. It’s Haru…(rest of message still less than fully decipherable)” and he’s going to have another idea, and a stilted script, but this time he’ll have Tokyo money to spend.

And he’s going to put our scenery and our people and our stories in every theatre in Japan. And this time we’ll be getting paid to help rewrite the script the 47th time while our cameras and our fingers and our brains are freezing up out there on the set that God built — the Yukon landscape.

Ridin’ Through the Many Genres of Country Music Breakin’ Wild Horses shows many sides of Gene Brown

Q

uesion: What do you get when a pedal steel guitar player of many years puts his considerable musical abilities toward creating a CD? Answer: A sizzling, yet subtle group of 10 songs that has echoes of the many types of country music that have permeated the airwaves since the inception of the genre.

Right off the bat, I must tell you that having jammed with Gene Brown on more than one occasion, I have a bias. I think he is one of the best pedal steel guitar players around. What I didn’t know was what a fine bass player and Dobro player he is.

And what a songwriter. This set of 10 tunes on Breakin’ Wild Horses shows his understanding and mastery of everything country music is and has been. I expected his pedal steel playing to take the fore in this project and was surprised to find it was the songs that are the focus. While his steel playing is in evidence, he shows his knowledge of what makes good music by surrounding these tunes with fine sidepeople. t’s that time of year again — when the sun shines longer, the snow seems fresher and Simapalooza is about to rock Mount Sima. Every spring, the Soulstice Music Society partners with the Great Northern Ski Society to bring you a fusion of music and snowboarding madness, highlighting the biggest talents in both song and snow.

So many ideas, so many genres, what’s a society to do? Well, the Soulstice Music Society is stopping at nothing to bring the patrons of Mount Sima the best and the brightest of local bands, DJs and hip hop artists.

The tentative music line-up for Simapalooza 2005 includes a medley of our own United DJs of Yukon, including DJKJ, DJ Stevee-Wunda, DJ Synapse, DJ Geo, DJ House Arrest, DJ Addie, and Atrocity. In addition, powerhouse performances are expected by Yukon heavy hitters Nemesis (Eric Ireland, Mike Jones, Yves Paradis, Etienne Gerrard), Dec and the A’s (Declan O’Donovan, Adriane Bergman) and a special musical performance by Rick Sward (and friends).

Round The World seems to be a nod to the Tex-Mex style of country that Marty Robbins introduced to the world. Don Bishop lends his trumpet and McColeman’s marimba give it just the right touch. You’d think you were down in old Mexico drinking Corona and sweltering in the heat.

Other tunes are reflections of love and life with that country down-to-earth attitude.

Lady From the Night, The Truest Kind of Woman and The Kind of Man give that bittersweet flavour that country music is famous for.

Yes, there has been some pain, but you pick yourself up and carry on … hopefully with a smile.

While reading the liner notes, I was taken aback at how many of the country greats Brown has performed with. If you know country music, you’ll know these names: Bobby Bare, Rose Maddox, Freddie Hart,

Dave Dudley and Charlie Pride. That’s pretty good company to be in.

In terms of production, Juno award winner Bob Hamilton shows his ear just keeps getting better as the years go by. Some of these tunes require a gentle touch to make sure everything is present, but nothing gets lost. Listen to the trade off of acoustic guitar licks intertwining with Brown’s vocals and you’ll know what I mean.

I’m a little worried that you, the reader, will start to think, “Hey, this guy loves everything,” but I submit that the Yukon’s musicians and recording facilities are simply coming into their own.

So pick up a copy of Gene Brown’s Breakin’ Wild Horses and find out what having country in your soul means. If you can, also catch him live with Yukon Jack just about every weekend at the Casa Loma.

Two New Galleries and Many Small Fishies

A

nother one caught: Ceramic artist Sam Dickie went to Dawson City as Artist in Residence with KIAC and created a show called Stand in the Odd Gallery last fall. And then — like so many others — she fell prey to the spell of the Yukon. She and her partner and one-year-old daughter MacKenzie were on their way to property they’d recently bought near Sooke, on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, but they had their boxes rerouted here. She’d come up for a few summers, but never thought she’d spend a winter, certainly never in Whitehorse.

When asked why, she squirmed a little, saying it was hard not to be cliché. When pressed, she said it was, of course, gorgeous, and that the Whitehorse arts community was active, small, friendly and accessible. Also, it was not as dark and cold as she thought it would be ..... To her delight, Jackie Ziehe’s husband (whom she calls

Pilot program called Learning through the Arts (LTTA) cruises through its third year at Elijah Smith Elementary School. The Yukon’s Department of Education has brought the pilot in through The Royal Conservatory of Music.

It’s an internationally run program with sites in the United States, England, Italy and Japan. Dancer Diane Holman heads up the steering committee. Many artistic disciplines contribute local experts: Arlin McFarlane for drama, Rhoda Mirkel for First Nations Visual Art, Mary Anne Annable-Roots for dance, Andrea McColeman for music and Helen O’Connor for visual arts. Using the arts as a vehicle they teach all facets of the curriculum. O’Connor taught anatomy to Grade 4s. They traced body forms, gluing cut-out Styrofoam bones and added muscle and digestive system collage items......

Artist-run centre is warming up. A core group of artists is forming for Gallery 204, in the alley behind the TD bank, former home of the Back Alley Gallery. Vision and mission statements are being forged and reclusive artists are being pulled out of the woodwork, dropping by the space to chat about what’s going to be going on. The gallery will provide a juried space for experimental, challenging and non-commercial work, something

Yukoners Show Off Fashions to Visitors with Leisa Gattie-Thurmer

T

here was a group showing of fashions close to home on Feb. 22. One Alaskan and several Yukon designers showcased their talents at the evening round-up of the Business Without Borders conference held at the Westmark Whitehorse.

Local models promenaded in a tea-room style fashion show in the banquet room of the hotel.

The audience was enthusiastic with some audience members modelling.

Megan Waterman, from Dawson City, presented her Louse-town Laundry label of high-end fleece separates trimmed in lynx fur.

Warm textures and earthy hues

evoked comfort and style. Her new line of roomy Anorak jackets were light-weight, cut for layering and perfect for mushing. These jackets were a big hit and I heard Waterman sold two before she returned to Dawson City.

Leather samples from the SKINZ collection were shown, including moose hide and seal skin jackets and cowhide bustier and halters.

Susan Bakers’ Making Tracks fleece items made a warm and fuzzy presentation.

L’Ark Brings Communal Experience (and fish) to Young Audiences

he creative spark for a new theatre company, L’Ark, took place at Yukon Educational Theatre’s (YET) presentation of Dean Eyre’s Diabetes, A Love Story nearly two years ago. Producer Arlin McFarlane arrived mid-show to a school gymnasium filled with young people. Immediately, she was struck by how completely

imagination going in a way that media doesn’t.”

Having been produced twice already, at Nakai Theatre’s Homegrown Festival last year and at Nakai for Kids this past January, Darwin, A Fish Out of Water will tour this May to schools in Whitehorse and surrounding areas.

McFarlane has now created L’Ark for YET. She says while its mandate involves education as a prime function (with art as the medium), in contrast L’Ark’s primary purpose lies in bringing live, artistically excellent theatre to young audiences. “(It’s) crucial that it’s live,” she says, “because live theatre gives us the communal experience of sharing a moment. It takes us beyond individual experience, beyond isolation, and invites us to recognize and celebrate humanity.”

Brian Fidler, director and cocreator with Eyre of L’Ark’s first production, Darwin, A Fish Out of Water, says, “Live theatre gets the

In creating the play, Fidler said it all began for him and Eyre with the creation of a very different kind of puppet that actually sits on top of the actors’ heads. From the puppet came the character of Darwin — a fish who has legs — and from that character, more characters, the theme of bullying and a place called Eddyville, where the story is set.

To tell the story, the play “takes the worlds of puppetry, mask and movement and stews them all together,” Fidler says, adding that in this case, “It’s had time to simmer.”

In this third production, he sees the play going, “beyond what we’ve done,” with new puppets created by Emily Woodruffe and Jo DeBeaudre, a new set by Meshel Melvin and a new cast member, Nicole Bauberger, taking over the role of Darwin.

After each school performance of Darwin, students will have a chance to see the puppets up close and to meet the performers.

“It’s important for children to be exposed to the idea of a career in the arts,” said Fidler.

McFarlane hopes for L’Ark to be able to create a new show about every two years. This is how long it takes, she says, to fundraise, create and tour a show. Along with funding from the Women’s Directorate, Crime Prevention Yukon and Arts Fund, an additional $40,000 has been fundraised for Darwin. The upcoming tour will cost a total of $70,000 for four performers and a stage manager.

In the future, McFarlane sees L’Ark presenting to youth on the national and international levels.

“Kids are the most open and honest audience,” says Fidler. “I really love the moments of beautiful, honest communication with them and between performers.”

Of course behind all of this, and the driving force, is the enjoyment and satisfaction of creating.

Porter Creek Secondary School Student Designers also presented their garments in their first public show. Student Designers presented a range of garment styles including barely there shift dresses, a quilted jacket, a collection of slinky disco halters, sophisticated skirts and classic tops. The students did a great job in designing, creating and, in some cases, modeling their garments. Way to go ladies.

Tropical Paradise North of the Arctic Circle Inuvik Family Centre to open April 2

INUVIK he newest vacation hot spot in the North could very well become Inuvik.

On April 2, the Inuvik Family Centre will officially open its doors to the 7,000 area residents who are looking for a chance to frolic in the leisure/lifestyle pool with a swirl pool and lazy river.

It looks a lot like the new pool in Whitehorse, partly because the same architects designed it. But, as Mayor Peter Clarkson points out, its water slide will be seven metres longer.

Literally, the new facility will be a “hot spot” because it also boasts of a steam room, sauna and hot tub.

A Loppet Runs Through It INUVIK ontrary to what some wise guys in Whitehorse believe, there are trees in Inuvik, NWT and its annual Top Of The World Ski Loppet will run through it April 9.

“We are just at the edge of the treeline so we have little trees,” says Rita Kors-Olthof, president of the Inuvik Ski Club. “It’s bushy, but we call one section the ‘Birch Loop’ because there’s a patch of birch.”

But that patch is beautiful, she says, and the trail is a dozer’s width wide, well-groomed and half of it is lit.

The loppet is three decades old and has had as many as 100 competitors. Last year it only saw 45 competitors — a third had come

zone with a climbing play structure, a birthday room and snack bar.

The theme throughout the facility will be “Tropical Paradise” with murals and palm trees added for decoration.

The Inuvik Family Centre has been added to the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex that already offers curling, skating, community hall, fitness centre, curling lounge and meeting rooms.

The addition adds six to seven pool staff and two full-time gate keepers and one part-time gate keeper.

Clarkson says it will be the first, year-round facility of its kind north of the Arctic Circle in Canada.

And he says it is not to luxurious for the 3,500 residents of Inuvik

There will be races for the Jack Rabbits — children who crosscountry ski once a week with equipment donated by the local ski club — at 150 metres. Then there will be a 1-km race, 2.2, 5, 7.5, 15 and 30 kilometres.

And Kors-Olthof wants “Southerners” to know that last year Inuvik had “great snow”.

“We were still skiing in May.”

“We have long winters,” he says. “Why should the kids in Inuvik not have what the kids in Whitehorse have.

“It’ll get enough use and, besides, it’s what the community wanted … we had a plebiscite.

“It’s pro-active,” he says.

“Once it’s open, people will wonder how we ever did without it.”

But then Clarkson had a confession: “I’ve been working on it day and night for four years … so I’m biased.”

International Curling Bonspiel is Ready to Go

erry Thiessen is preparing for one the largest events Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre will see this year.

The man in charge of food and beverages is expecting to entertain 400 to 500 curlers and guests at the 53rd Annual International Bonspiel that begins March 24.

He wasn’t in this position last year, but he has heard about the line ups at the bar. So, this year, he has arranged for an additional bar to be set up in the lower lobby.

Susanne Bertrand, the co-chair of the bonspiel, says the event has been twice as large as this year’s.

But she is still counting on some late entries.

It appears the Easter Weekend and Spring Break has conspired to keep many of the teams away.

After 53 years, it is difficult to come up with new ideas, but the attempt is there: The bonspiel will be held in conjunction with the casino that will offer chances at Black Jack and Wheel of Fortune from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Air North tickets will be the grand prize and proceeds will go to the Lions Club and Mount McIntyre.

Another twist this year is the volunteer and sponsor appreciation wine and cheese. It is held at the same time as the Skookum Super League’s final night.

But, will the ice be in prime shape?

“Oh yes, definitely,” says Thiessen immediately. “Our ice maker is here round the clock.

“The comments I hear is our ice is among the best anywhere.”

Drift, a stocky centre and Tomlin, a speedy right winger, are actually from the small Yukon community of Haines Junction.

So, each week the players carpool with fellow Mustangs teammate Thomas Moore to Whitehorse for practices and games.

Surprisingly, both say it’s actually not that hard to convince their parents to taxi them back and forth.

“Both our Dads play hockey and our Moms both like hockey too, so it’s actually pretty easy to get them to drive us,” explains Tomlin.

Adds Drift, “If we play good it usually keeps them happy, plus they understand how committed we are to the team.”

There’s no doubting their coach is both aware and appreciative of their loyalty to the Mustangs.

“Our other forwards are great players and have some great chemistry between them as well, but these guys have something different, something I don’t think I’ve seen before in minor hockey,” explains Martin, going so far as to compare Drift and Tomlin to Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri.

Just coming to the rink is an adrenaline rush for both Tomlin and Drift, however they both agree at times it’s the drive out to Whitehorse itself that can provide the most excitement.

Tomlin recalls one winter night along the old road to Champagne in which their minivan almost skidded head on into a semi-truck.

“That was a close call,” said Tomlin.

When talking about their hockey future, both players say it would be fun to play down south.

For this season, along with their Mustangs teammates, they are now in the midst of training for the upcoming Provincials.

For More Exercise, Try a Hilly Trail Map by Chris Wheeler

T

his column is called Wheeler’s Walkabout and not Wheeler’s Hike, or Wheeler’s Trek for a reason: It is just a lowstress introduction to some excellent trails. Most of my outings take an hour or two, and really just get you out of the house. There are times, however, when you want a little more than a casual stroll.

For me, today was one of those days. So how do I go about getting a bit more exercise into my lowstress routine without adding a lot of time? Often, I simply choose a trail that involves more varied, or hilly, terrain.

One of the best Whitehorse areas for a bit more sweat can be found just beyond Riverdale around Hidden Lakes. There are two “hidden” lakes in this area.

They are all what I would describe

as “pothole lakes”; they appear to be landlocked bowls of water.

However, an interesting fact is that they are fed under the ground by the Yukon River water table, a dynamic that caused their levels to rise after the Whitehorse power dam was built in the 50s.

Many trees were drowned then and their bleached trunks can still be seen projecting above these lake’s winter ice.

Some of the hills surrounding Hidden Lakes are quite impressive when you’re trying to set a brisk pace, so they really burn the calories. Today, the family and I decided to circumnavigate Hidden Lakes One and Two. The trail begins just off the Chadburn Lake second lake, traveling up and down Road and is known to many who a number of hills as it goes.

By the time we made it to the fish there. It starts heading south then curves west around the far western end of the second lake, I was beginning to think that this beautiful day required something new. There’s a fork in the trail here and I wanted to see where the western path went. A tree at the corner had a big “C” and an arrow carved into it, so I was thinking that perhaps this was the path to the mythical (in my mind) Chadern Lake. After a short discussion, the kids agreed and we all headed down this new path, which was

We walked and walked, passing two small pothole lakes and taking in some interesting hills. It was getting close to noon and the sun was shining brightly, warming things significantly from the morning’s minus ten. After an hour or so, we finally reached a three-way intersection in the trail. There were a couple of signs here. One, pointing back the way we had come, said “Hidden Lakes”, while the other, pointing ahead, said, “Chadburn Lake”. The third trail

was unmarked, and I guessed it could be the way to Chadern.

Unfortunately, we had used up our time and needed to head back so this will remain a mystery to solve on another occasion.

Having taken some pictures, we backtracked over our original path until we reached the Hidden Lake trail and then struck off to the north crossing the first lake and arriving back at the truck.

Needless to say, the hill climbing left us all feeling thoroughly exercised. Time now to reflect and enjoy a well-earned dinner.

More Than One Way to Count Down to Canada Games Figure skaters take it one step at a time

evin Caron measures the time to the Canada Games by the number of spins he can do in the air.

The pre-novice figure skater figures he will have a triple jump nailed by the time the Canada Games comes to Whitehorse in 2007.

The quad, the highest the men have been able to achieve, is within his grasp in two to three years … probably too late for the Games.

“The top 10 will try the quads,” says Caron, allowing the word “try” to hang in the middle of the sentence for an extra beat.

Katie Blaker is another prenovice. She says she will have a “shot” at the Canada Games if she becomes a novice by then.

Both say they are not doing anything different because of the Canada Games. Training at these higher levels is aimed at the Olympics and the world championship and the Canada Games is always a step on the way.

And both have reached the latest step by joining the B.C. Provincial Team. It’s a designation that means Skate Canada is keeping an eye on their development. Scouts will be grading them – sometimes for them to see and sometimes not – and perhaps choosing them for their development program.

Blaker’s mother, Sheri Blaker, is the co-chair of the Whitehorse Skating Club. She says belonging to the provincial team also allows the athletes to receive a High Performance Grant.

One of the skate coaches, Harold Sher, says the Canada Games means he will have to get his skaters ready for a “second season”.

The Sectionals are in November and they will need a break before getting ready for the Canada Games.

The coaches will try a simulation to expose the skaters to the “competitive environment” and the routine of preparing the rink and skating the program in full costume even though there is so much else going on around them.

“We have to make sure they peak at the right time,” says Sher.

“Then comes the moment when the coach and parents have no control.

“It’s always exciting.”

Selling Cool … One Bottle at a Time

K, not specifically about beer. Rather about the significant contribution a brewery like the Yukon Brewing Company can make to promote the destination it was born in.

Mark Beese, the brewery’s enthusiastic sales manager who could talk beer any day any time (and does), put it this way, “Beer is what you do when you’re having fun. And long after the fun is over, it has the ability to transport you back to where you had those good times.” For instance, Kokanee

brings to mind the mountains of B.C. The local folks, who appreciate the local beer, do so because they associate with it in the same way.

“The beer is reflective of what it means to be “Yukon”. It’s distinctive, unique and unconventional.

It’s different, in a good way.”

Outsiders are responding to their products as well. This is the case in places like Grand Prairie with a geographic setting similar to the Yukon, and Montreal where independent thinking is “cool”.

Beese continued, “To people living Outside, the Yukon is an interesting character, sort of like that cantankerous uncle we all know and love. It’s the same with our beer. It’s maybe a little brash, a little edgy at first but, once you get to know it, you really like it.”

Yukon tourism companies are finding potential vacationers are responding to their marketing efforts in much the same way.

That’s partly why Beese was appointed last year to the Senior Marketing Committee of the Yukon Tourism Marketing Partnership, a joint government and tourism industry group that advises the government in its marketing activities.

Both parties have much to gain.

For the brewery, it’s a chance to contribute to the defining and packaging of the Yukon’s tourism “brand”. And the tourism marketing folks gain a different perspective from a successful Yukon-based export product that also contributes significantly to

how the destination is perceived by its customers.

That contribution includes the sponsorship of a number of music festivals around the Yukon, the Sourdough Sam contest during Rendezvous and a variety of sporting events both within and outside the territory.

But the brewery’s contributions don’t stop there. It often partners with Tourism Yukon, Air North and other Yukon tourism businesses including hotels, adventure travel companies and restaurants in promotional ventures down south. At the moment, the brewery is running a radio contest in Calgary where the winner gets a dream trip for four to the Yukon.

Success on a larger scale must be right around the corner. Beese recently heard of a guy who was pretending to be a Yukon Brewing Company representative in Banff’s largest bar as a way to impress the ladies. This is music to Beese’s ear.

“If someone in Alberta is using our beer as a way to meet women, then we’re definitely doing something right!”

Tips and Hints and Other Good Things Get ready to enjoy the Yukon night skies

I

f this is your first night outside, looking at the stars, there are a few things you can do make the experience much more enjoyable.

First, make sure you put your telescope outside for a while to acclimatize. Telescopes have metal bodies, glass and mirrors.

These items hold onto heat very well. At about –10°C I will put the binoculars and small spotting scopes out for about one hour. For larger telescopes, I let them cool for about two to three hours. If your telescope or binoculars are not cool enough, the image might seem to swim and pulsate and there is no clear detail to be found anywhere in the eyepiece.

Just like the telescope and binoculars, the human element must also acclimatize and adjust to the temperature and the night sky. Get yourself set up properly: Set up a small table for your star charts, make sure your tripod is in a good position with a good unobstructed field of view. You will also have to let your eyes dilate for the night sky. When you are outside in the dark clear Yukon night skies your pupils dilate to let more light in.

This process takes about 30 minutes. “And how do I find my gear in the dark with my eyes dilated, Mr. Cackette?” you might ask?

The answer is simple. Just get a red light flashlight. The red light does not interfere with the dilation of the pupil as much and lets you find your gear, see your star charts and, most importantly, find your coffee and hot chocolate in the dark.

Another duty to perform is to align your finder scope. Speaking of finder scopes you might want to consider a little toy they call the “Telrad”. This is the most amazing and important aid you can buy for telescopes (I even have one on my giant binoculars). This truly is the ultimate finder scope.

It projects three rings on a Plexiglas plate, like a targeting rectile. The rings that you see on the Plexiglas plate are 1/2 Degree, 2 Degree, and 5 degrees. This, with a Sky News or Astronomy magazine makes short work of all the little hidden treasures of the deep sky.

While you are waiting for your eyes and telescope to prepare for the night of fun, get familiar with a couple of your favourite constellations and planets that are in the current Yukon Night Sky. Notice that after about 10 to 15 minutes, you begin to see more stars and more detail in the Milky Way. This is an excellent time to grab your binoculars (every backyard astronomer must have a good pair) and go for a look-see at the Milky Way. The Milky Way is actually just part of an arm of a Spiral Galaxy we call home. Huge star fields and

galaxies. This wondrous celestial treasure is hidden in the constellation Leo. Go to the star called Denebola at the end of the lions tail. Then, going back towards the body in a straight line, stop at the first bright star, then go down vertically about 5 degrees and presto.

The two brightest galaxies are

the Andromeda Galaxy. This galaxy is 1.4 times larger than our own Galaxy and is about 2,300,000 light years away. In small binoculars the galaxy appears elongated and as a small fuzzy patch of light.

In small and medium size scopes, the two companion galaxies also become visible. A really good, dark

Well, now that you are settled in on a moonless night and you and all your gear are ready to go, what will you look at? Well the first deep sky target I seek is the Double Cluster in Perseus. On a perfect night at low power in my telescope the Double Cluster looks like diamonds on wet glass. The Double Cluster is visible as a smudge to the naked eye just below Cassiopeia, which makes it easier to find.

My next favourite celestial treasure is what we call the Leo Trio.

This is a triple galaxy shot. That’s right, three galaxies in the same field of view. In smaller scopes and such you may only see two

about 40 million light years away and about 180,000 light years apart, and roughly the same size as our own galaxy.
