AKERSELVA: RIVER WALK BY TORCHLIGHT Annual event in honour of the autumn equinox in Oslo - when night and day are the same length. A total of 4,000 torches light up Osloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s urban river Akerselva from north to south, creating a mystical atmosphere around the cultural journey. Experience light sculptures, dance, music, art installations, and more as you wander along the river.

Ski Simulator next to the Holmenkollen ski jump! Jump in “Kollen” and find out what it feels like to head down the world’s toughest downhill ski slopes alongside the world’s best performers on two skis. Technology which used to be available only to pilots and astronauts combines flight simulator movements with an ‘eyeview’ movie to create a unique and realistic feel. Once inside the the Ski Simulator you will get the ‘ride of your life’, including wind-effect when the skiing starts. In this beautiful museum situated next to the famous Vigeland Park you will find an almost complete collection of the works by Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). The story behind the Vigeland Park and how the sculptures were made is also well documented in the museum, which was built as studio and home for the artist in the 1920’s.

AKERSHUS CASTLE AND FORTRESS Spend a day at Akershus fortress and experience centuries of Norwegian history. Once an active fortress, the area is now a place for official representation, culture, learning and recreation. Within the fortress walls you will find two museums, a castle, beautiful views of the fjord and the city – and history from the Viking age to modern times.

Akershus castle was built as a fortified medieval castle around the year 1300. Since then the castle has been at the centre of events in Norwegian history. Today it is used for state representation and cultural events. A tour of the castle takes you through the Government representation rooms, The Castle Church, The Royal Mausoleum and The Dungeon.

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

The museum covers Norwegian military history from the Viking era, through the numerous Nordic wars under Danish rule (ca. 1400-1814) to the Napoleonic wars, the union with Sweden 1814-1905, World War II campaign 1940 and War at Sea 19391945. The latest exhibitions cover the Cold war period 1945-1990, recent international operations and “The War Cross – Norway’s highest decoration”. The exhibition examines the connection between Edvard Munch's work and one of the truly great names in contemporary art –Jasper Johns (American, born in 1930). Never before has there been such a comprehensive exhibition of Johns' art in Scandinavia. Munch had a far greater influence on Jasper Johns than was previously known. Johns has been inspired by Munch's treatment of topics such as love, fear, illness and death, among others. Jasper Johns+Edvard Munch consists of 130 works – paintings, prints, drawings and photographs. OSCARSHALL 31 Take a walk at peaceful Akershus Festning and visit some of the museums.

The summer palace of Oscarshall is located on the peninsula of Bygdø in Oslo. The palace was commissioned by King Oscar I and Queen Joséphine, and was completed in 1852. Today it stands as a monument to Norwegian art and applied art from the 19th century. What’s it like to work at such a famous Oslo-institution? It’s great! I can’t imagine a better brand to work on than Edvard Munch. It is such an honour. My job is basically to get as many people as possible to visit the museum and learn about Munch’s art. The museum is in constant change, and there is so much energy. Does it feel like a lot of responsibility? Yes. Edvard Munch gave the collection, consisting of 28,000 original art works, to the city of Oslo when he died in 1944, and it is our responsibility to manage it and bring it forth to younger generations. You used to work as head of marketing at the Norwegian Red Cross. Is Munch a very different beast? Yes, it is. Both jobs are very meaningful, but there is a different energy at the Munch Museum and to market Norway’s greatest artist is very satisfying. What is it that makes The Munch Museum so popular?

With 28,000 original art works the museum has the world’s largest collection of works by Munch, which also allows us to arrange many different exhibitions. In recent years we have been exhibiting the +MUNCH series, where Edvard Munch's art is shown side by side with six other artists. Through the series people have gotten to know Munch in new ways and have seen him in another light. There are so many layers when it comes to Munch and his art. The +MUNCH series has also demonstrated that The Munch Museum can be a modern museum with an edge, and most importantly, it shows that Edvard Munch’s art is important and relevant for contemporary life. We are happy to see that there has been an enormous increase in local visitors as well this year. The number of local visitors increased sevenfold, so it seems like the citizens of Oslo like what they see and are coming back for more! What can people expect to experience at the museum? own audio guide. The museum also shows an excellent film about Munch. After seeing the exhibition you can stop by the museum shop or enjoy a coffee and the famous Scream cake on the terrace. In general we hope that our guests have increased their cultural capital after a visit to The Munch Museum. We have also started a four year contemporary art project called The Munch Museum on the Move, which is actually a series of art projects exhibited in the area between the current Munch Museum at Tøyen and the new museum in Bjørvika. The Munch Museum is going to become a neighbour of the Opera House in Bjørvika in 2020 if everything goes according to

collections reach out to a wider audience and new user groups and will strengthen Oslo's profile as an international cultural center. Herreros Arquitectos’ architecture is outstanding and the building really stands out.

The new museum is four times bigger than the current one. Its thirteen floors will allow us to run many exhibitions at the same time and therefore we will be able to show more of Munch’s art. Basically, our visitors will get an even better experience of Munch’s art. 2020 is a long time away and there will be plenty of exiting things happening at the current museum before that. Are there any interesting exhibitions in September and the next few months that you can recommend to our readers? September is the last month of Jasper Johns+Edvard Munch, which ends on the 25th. The exhibition reveals that Munch had a far greater influence on Jasper Johns than was previously known. In October we open the last exhibition of the +MUNCH series, Jorn+Munch, where we show the parallels between the Danish painter Asger Jorn and Edvard Munch. The 2017 program has not been reveal yet, but stay tuned! The final question is one that we pose to all of our Oslo People interviewees: What are your favourite Oslo places? Places to go, places to see, perhaps hidden gems?

I recently discovered a fantastic café, PUST, in Slemdalsveien 1 at Majorstua. As soon as I walked in, I got the feeling of being back in Brooklyn where I lived for seven years. It turns out that the couple who runs it used to live in Brooklyn, and their aim was to create a café with exactly that feeling! They definitely succeeded. Another great spot is Ostebutikken in Thorvald Meyersgate 27 at Grunerløkka, which is a small French bistro with a great atmosphere. And then there is my favourite cinema, Gimle Kino at Bygdøy Allee 39 - if you would like to see a great movie and chill out with a glass of wine or a tea, this is the place to be.

This mini-guide shows you a few of the many things you will encounter along Osloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most famous river - Akerselva. Akerselva begins at the lake Maridalsvannet, at the edge of the great forests north of the city, and drops 149 metres on its 9.8 kilometre journey to the Oslo fjord beside the Opera House. On its watery way Akerselva passes through many interesting areas of town, and treats wanderers to an exciting mix of riverside cultural offerings, bars, cafĂŠs, historical buildings, waterfalls, small parks and forests, and even some idyllic swimming spots.

While many choose to follow the river upstream from the city centre, we have decided to literally go with the flow and begin upstream at the lake. If you want to begin in the city, you can of course read the guide in reverse. To get to Maridalsvannet, take the bus or tram to KjelsĂĽs station and walk for a few minutes (ask a local).

URBAN FISHING Did you know that Oslo is one of the world’s only capitals where you can fish in the middle of the city? The largest salmon in Akerselva measured by researchers last year was one metre long and weighed about ten kilos! Here you have the chance to catch urban salmon and sea trout. You are allowed to catch up to three fish a day and the season lasts until the end of this month. And yes, the water in Akerselva is so clean that they are safe to eat!

READY, SET, GO!

MARIDALSVANNET

This is a big and beautiful lake surrounded by forest, and a popular starting point for hiking and biking trips into the forest. However, as it is also the city´s largest source of drinking water, the lake itself is fenced off (but easily viewable).

TIP: As the museum is near Kjelsås station and a bit away from the paths along the river, you might want to visit it immediately after getting off your buss or tram, and not after beginning your descent from Maridalsvannet. Otherwise you might get a little lost, and even lose out on the next major attraction: “Frysja”.

BREKKEDAMMEN (“FRYSJA”) A few minutes downstream from Maridalsvannet you arrive at Brekkedammen, a calm, twisting and wide section of river. It ends at an old and open dam. This area is often called ”Frysja”, although really that is the medieval name for the entire Akerselva. Brekkedammen is an area of forest and parkland that has the river’s most popular spots for swimming. It is also a beautiful and serene place to sit, relax, picnic and enjoy the scenery – or mingle with the ducks that also like to take a swim here. TIP: If you prefer to spend your time relaxing at Frysja, the 54 bus runs back and forth between nearby Stillatorvet station and the city centre (including Oslo Central Station and Aker Brygge).

GRANDALEN

Soon you come to another forested area and a couple of tiny and idyllic swimming spots. This relatively pristine area is called Grandalen, and is very leafy and relaxing. This is the last of the “wild nature” parts of the river, except for a number of impressive waterfalls further down.

NYDALEN

Upon leaving the forest you arrive at Nydalen, an old industrial area with a mix of charming 19th century red brick buildings and modern office and apartment complexes. Here there are a number of cafes and shops and the Nydalen metro station. Towards the bottom of Nydalen there is a place where locals like to sunbathe and wade in the river on hot summer days (by the ”Nydalen” sign on a concrete wall by the river).

BJØLSEN

Below Nydalen is Bjølsen, an area with some old factory buildings, apartments and small parks along the river. At the bottom of a relatively long hill you arrive at a large sign that reads ”Lilleborg”. Turn sharply left here and cross the river over a small bridge and you will arrive at a cozy square with a jazz café and green grocer. Also ask for “Det andre teatret”, a small theatre and café a few metres further along this road. When you have returned to the “Lilleborg”-sign, you should turn left and down the little hill that passes under a bridge. After a few metres you will arrive at the park Myraløkka.

MYRALØKKA AND MYRENS VERKSTED Myraløkka is a little park with a shape that is reminiscent of an amphitheatre, as clay used to be extracted to create red bricks for factories. The small, round hill at the bottom covers an old factory pipe. If you cross from the west-side of the river to the east over the bridge in the park, you come to Myrens verksted. These red brick buildings used to belong to a factory that repaired machines belonging to other factories. A small flat park along this side of the river is a popular gathering place for ducks. It is also possible to wade in the river here. Continue along, past the statue of an elephant (a reminder of a circus that used to be in this area long ago) and pass under another small bridge.

GLADS MØLLE AND VØYENFALLENE After the bridge you arrive at Glads mølle, a large, wooden, yellow house perched on top of a hill. Built in 1736 to house the production of paper, Glads mølle is the oldest factory building along the river and one of the oldest in Norway. A waterfall known as Øvre Vøyenfallene drops down from this hill. Directly below Glads mølle is another tiny park by the river bank. From here you have a better view of the waterfall and it’s a cozy spot for a little picnic break.

BEYERBRUA

Next is the ancient Beyerbrua bridge. It was originally built in the 1600s and became a car bridge in the 20th century. It burned down in 1974, but was rebuilt to look the way it is depicted in paintings from the 1820s, and is now a lovely and rustic little pedestrian bridge beside a waterfall. By Beyerbrua there is a charming red wooden cottage built in the early 1800s. It houses a cozy café and art exhibitions. You can also relax in their garden and enjoy views of the impressive waterfall Våghalsen. The house is called Hønse-Lovisas hus. Hønse-Lovisa was a character in one of the plays by Oskar Braathen, who has a bust beside the bridge and wrote about life for impoverished workers at the textile factories on the other side of the bridge at the beginning of the 20th century. A statue on the bridge pays homage to these factory women. By the square on the other side of Beyerbrua, in one of these very factory buildings, is the bar, café and concert stage Månefisken, with outside tables by the Våghalsen waterfall mentioned above. On the opposite side of the square is Arbeidermuseet, a small museum dedicated to the factory workers (open Saturdays and Sundays, 11-16).

VÅGHALSEN

On Beyerbrua you can peer down at the Våghalsen waterfall (also known as Nedre Vøyenfallene), one of the most impressive and accessible in the whole river. “Våghalsen” means “The Daredevil”, which says it all really! This is a wonderfully “wild” sight, especially considering how close it is to the city centre. In centuries past Våghalsen was used by saw mills (the area is called Sagene, or “The Saws”), and later by textile factories and other industries that relied on the power of these falls. Take the steps down along the west side of the river to get the best view of the falls. At the bottom of the steps is Wallmans Salonger, a cabaret and entertainment venue. Cross the pretty little bridge here and continue along the river.

ÅMOT BRU

Soon you pass below another bridge (Sannerbrua), and after a little walk you arrive at the white bridge Åmot bru. It is an elegant suspension bridge from 1851. A Norwegian inscription on a sign on the bridge roughly reads: “I can carry 100 men, but I fail in the event of rhythmic marching.” Jump on the middle of the bridge to make it sway and scare everyone else walking on it!

KUBAPARKEN AND CREATIVE SCHOOLS Now you pass through a green and hilly area and by a metal bridge that often has a lot of padlocks, or “love locks”, attached to it by amorous couples. On your right is Oslo’s School of Architecture. Across the river is Oslo National Academy of the Arts. After that you arrive at Kubaparken. This is a nice little park with a charming wooden bridge in the middle. It has a round concrete area at one end that used to be occupied by a huge gas container back when gas still competed with electricity in Norway. The gas was created by burning coal, and the building where this burning took place is still in the park, today as the café/ bar Fyrhuset Kuba (open from 15:00 Mondays – Saturdays). From here, take the steps beside Fyrhuset Kuba down to the Vulkan area, past Westerdals School of Arts, Communication and Technology on your left.

VULKAN

Vulkan is another old industrial area that includes a red brick factory building from the 1800s. It has been completely renewed in the last few years. The centerpiece of this area is Mathallen Oslo, Norway’s first food hall that opened in an old bridge factory in 2012. This is well worth a visit, and includes food stalls, cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars. Across from the entrance to Mathallen is BAR VULKAN, a restaurant at day and bar at night. BAR VULKAN has a big roof terrace with a nice view of the area and lots of seats. Behind Mathallen you arrive at Dansens Hus, a stage centre for dance. There are some popular eateries in this area also.

BLÅ AND INGENSTEDS You will soon reach a crossing road. Cross this, and follow the road very slightly on the left that continues on straight ahead. This road is called Brenneriveien. Take the next left (right before the steep hill going up to the right). The building now on your left is Blå, a popular club and a real Oslo-institution in an old factory building, with everything from jazz concerts to house music. You can relax outside on their riverside terrace in the daytime. On Sundays there is a market here. The old factory building on the right houses Ingensteds, another bar/club that arranges various cultural events and markets and also has a nice riverside terrace. Upstairs in the same building is the small Strykejernet art school.

DOGA

Cross the bridge beside Blå and Ingensteds, turn right and continue along the river. Cross the next bridge you come to (with steps leading up to it). Now you are by DogA – the Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture. As the name implies, this is a centre for design, architecture and related subjects. In addition to exhibitions DogA houses a shop, café and restaurant. The building used to belong to Oslo’s first transformer station. Tip: If instead of crossing the bridge you continue along the river for another 50 metres, you will arrive at Syng. This is a trendy but cozy karaoke bar with very colourful seats on its riverside terrace.

JAKOB KIRKE

Next on the route is the Jacob Church, which is beside DogA. It stopped being a parish church in 1985 and was almost demolished. Today the church is a culture venue and is called Kulturkirken Jakob (“The Culture Church Jacob”). It hosts concerts and other cultural events.

GRØNLAND

If you continue following the river for some minutes, you will arrive in the city centre near Grønland. You know you are there when you see a park by the river (called Vaterlandsparken) right before the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel, where the river disappears into a tunnel. The river continues in the tunnel until it has passed under the train tracks at Oslo Central Station.

AKERSELVA MEETS THE FJORD Behind the opera house you will find the place where Akerselva finally runs into the fjord. If you want to walk along every bit of Akerselva it is possible to walk along, you can now turn back and follow the river for a couple of minutes until it disappears into the tunnel by the train tracks. The tunnel along this little stretch began being removed in 2012, liberating the river for the first time since 1964. The stretch was finished developed last year and has a small park, wooden walkway with seating and even a tiny human-made waterfall. Congratulations on completing your walk along Oslo’s most famous river – we hope you enjoyed it!

SHOPA HOLIC Shopping at Aker Brygge

Oslo has a great selection of interesting shops. There are a wide variety of department stores, boutiques and shopping districts with hundreds of outlets, charming antique shops, flea markets, exclusive international brands and local handicrafts.

SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten. no), which has a further 70 shops. Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), in the oldest part of Oslo Central Station, has an attractive new dining and shopping area, a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan. no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house with over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store near Stortinget with many well-known Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet.no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shopping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (akerbrygge.no), the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened in 2014 with lots of stores.

Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2 / fuglen.no) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 56 / frokendianassalonger.no) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22 / trabantclothing. com) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.

ART & ANTIQUES

There are quite a lot of places to check out around town for those who would like to get in touch with their artistic or antiquarian sides. Take a stroll and explore beautiful paintings, art magazines, old books, handicrafts and antique furniture. The popular Vestkanttorvet Flea Market (Vestkanttorvet (Professor Dahls gate) / vestkanttorvet.wordpress.com) is Oslo’s oldest market, and the place to go for bric-a-brac and antiques on Saturdays (March – December). Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5 / blomqvist. no) is Norway’s largest auction house and specializes in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques. You might also want to take a look at Damm’s Antiquarian Books (Frederik Stangs gate 46 / damms.no), the oldest antiquarian book store in Scandinavia, as well as antiques shop Galleri Gimle Arts and Antiques (Gimleveien 21 / galleri-gimle.no). Basarhallene (Lille Grensen 3) houses several handicraft and antique shops.

VINTAGE & SECOND-HAND

BOOKS & MUSIC

Most vintage and secondhand stores are found in the Grünerløkka area, although there are some more gems spread around town.

There are plenty of places around town to satisfy your appetite for books and music. To get you started we’ll mention just a few of the more unique ones.

Fretex (fretex.no), Norway’s biggest chain of secondhand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF has two stores in Oslo: UFF Underground (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-underground-butikk) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy secondhand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Jernbanetorget (Jernbanetorget 2 / www.uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-jernbanetorget) with a more

Bare Jazz (Grensen 8 / barejazz.no) is a great jazz-only specialty music store with a café and a place to hear good jazz music, sometimes live, while nearby Big Dipper (Møllergata 1 / bigdipper.no) has a large selection of vinyl. Eldorado Bookstore (Torggata 9A / eldo.no) is the largest independent bookstore in Scandinavia, with 4,000 square metres of books, culture and music, including Norway’s largest departments for children’s books, audio books and classical music, and a coffee shop, back yard restaurant and 

Tronsmo (Universitetsgata 12 / tronsmo.no) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like politics, feminism, gay & lesbian issues, movies and ficition, has a good selection of English-language literature, and a basement full of comic books. The Nobel Peace Center Gift Shop in the Nobel Peace Center (Brynjulf Bulls plass 1 / nobelpeacecenter.org) has books related to war, peace and development. The book shops of The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (Universitetsgata 13 / nasjonalmuseet.no) are well worth a visit. They sell books related to the fields of the four institutions tied to the museum: The National Gallery, The National Museum – Architecture, The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

DESIGN

Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. Moods of Norway (moodsofnorway.com) on Oslo’s main street (Karl Johans gate 13), near Parliament (Akersgata 33), and in Homansbyen (Hegdehaugsveien 34), is a chain of stores and a hip Norwegian designer brand with funky clothes for every occasion – and the slogan “Happy Clothes for Happy People”. David-Andersen (david-andersen.no) stores have a great selection of gold, diamond, silver and enamel jewelry. Purenkel (Steenstrups gate 12 / www.purenkel.no) is a shop and gallery

hybrid with stylish design and handicraft items as well as workshops. At Norway Designs (Stortingsgata 28 / norwaydesigns. no) you’ll find great Norwegian, Nordic and European interior design articles, and at Pur Norsk (Industrigata 36 / purnorsk. no) you can buy Norwegian design products such as furniture and personal items. Heimen husflid (Rosenkrantz’ gate 8 / heimen.no) is a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, blankets, arts and crafts and much more, and the shop Illums bolighus (Ruseløkkveien 26 / illumsbolighus.no) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.

FOOD & DELICACIES

You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate. One of the hottest places on the Oslo food map is Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) – Norway’s very first food hall. In this red brick former factory building at Grünerløkka by the Akerselva river, you’ll find about 30 food shops and eateries offering a tasty and fascinating selection of food and delicacies from various regions of Norway and further afield. LUXURY & HIGH-END

Oslo’s luxury and upmarket shopping opportunities have grown fast in recent years, and can be found in many parts of town, but especially on and near Karl Johans gate as well as on the city’s wealthy west side. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B / egerkarljohan.no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house, and stocks over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. House of Oslo (Ruseløkkveien 26 / houseofoslo.no) is Norway’s first and only department store that specializes in high-end design, interior and lifestyle, and contains over 20 shops that sell everything from teaspoons to sofas. Upmarket stores with self-explanatory names include Gucci (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Hermés (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Louis Vuitton (Akersgata 20) and Mulberry (Akersgata 18). On and around Bogstadveien on the city’s west side there are also a number of high-end stores, and nearby you’ll for instance find

SOUVENIRS

No visit to Oslo is complete without at least one souvenir! While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you. At the new Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1), next to Oslo Central station, you will also find Oslo Gift Shop (ostbanehallen.no/butikk/oslo-gift-shop), where you can buy classic souvenir items like trolls, lusekofte, wollen socks and much more. Meanwhile, two souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. These are Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm. no), which sells a lots of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. Oslo Sweater Shop in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel (Holbergs gate 30 / sweater.no) as well as in Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania (Biskop Gunnerus’ gate 3 / sweater.no) has the country’s largest selection of Norwegian sweaters as well as many other souvenirs. A larger place at Alexander Kiellands plass is the popular Colonel Mustard (Darres gate 2), where you can play an impressive number of board games while enjoying tasty Europeanand United States-inspired dishes and a great selection of beers. Sagene Lunsjbar (Maridalsveien 153) is a cozy and wellknown lunch bar with a good selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, burgers, dinners, deserts - and a fun children’s menu. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage that includes popular open stage nights, while Pigalle's (Grønlandsleiret 15) new owners have ditched 80s kitsch for a cool and elegant Bauhaus / 1920s art deco style cocktail bar and interior complete with ferns, and even an art deco terrace with a little fountain. Skuret Bar og Scene (Christian Kroghs gate 2) is a scruffy but popular bar and stage that hosts many concerts, stand-up shows, quiz competitions, and more.

YOUNGSTORGET

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places

Café Mono (Pløens gate 4) is a bar/concert stage with dimmed lighting that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25) appeals to the electronic music crowd, with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight. Oslo’s local buses, trams, ferries and the metro share a ticket system. Single tickets can be purchased on busses, trams and ferries, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro tickets must be purchased before entering the train. TRAM

Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre

METRO (T-BANE)

Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).

BUS

Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station.
