How does the idea of sleeping for free on a total stranger’s couch sound to you?

Thanks to the website couchsurfing.com, this is exactly what increasing numbers of visitors to Oslo gladly do, shunning the usual hotels and hostels.

The service connects travelers and hosts around the world, and Oslo is no different. A quick search on the website reveals more than 8000 registered hosts living in the city and almost 33,000 in Norway as a whole.

At the website, visitors looking for a free place to stay can browse personal profiles to find people that will host them in their private homes. The accommodation is usually anything from an actual couch to a spare bed or mattress. There is even a

section on the site for last minute appeals for those that haven’t found a place to stay in Oslo yet.

Sometimes hosts and guides also spend time together swapping stories and exploring the local area. Some never meet again, simply enjoying a fleeting moment of contact, and others stay friends long after parting.

Meeting the world On page 12-13 we meet Yager Anderson, a 22-year-old Alaskan who used the couchsurfing network to find free places to sleep in Oslo. Anderson likes the fact that this form of travel allows him to meet local cultures.

Øyvind Berg, who has hosted about 20 couchsurfers in Oslo, in Iran with his host and a Norwegian friend this summer.

Similarly, Øyvind Berg, a 30-year-old from Oslo who has hosted about 20 couchsurfers, loves the feeling of being around “international people”.

- I wanted to host because I was used to being around international people mainly from university and an exchange programme, and this was a way to continue that kind of contact, Berg tells What’s On Oslo.

- In addition of course I like to get to know new people, and it’s exciting to learn about new cultures, he adds.

Concerts and board games As well as facilitating accommodation, couchsurfing.com allows members to arrange social events.

In Oslo, some of the most popular regular events involve people meeting to learn languages or play board games. In addition, hosts and visitors they may happen to have at the time often gather for meet and greets over a tea, coffee or beer.

Members also go to concerts and other one-off happenings.

- These events are actually what I enjoy and have used the most, both here in

I particularly like grabbing a beer or for instance going to a concert, says Berg.

The website has competitors such as Bewelcome.org (56,000 members) and Hospitality Club (about 700,000 members).

- It’s a low threshold kind of thing that allows you to meet people without necessarily hosting or being hosted, he points out.

In addition there are sites such as Airbnb.com (500,000 apartments worldwide) where people rent out their private apartments or a room in the apartment for prices that tend to be cheaper than a hotel.

100,000 cities Couchsurfing.com was founded in 2003 and is the most prominent of a wave of web-based services that open for new ways of travelling. The site has somewhere between five and seven million members in 100,000 cities, and about one third of the user profiles are said to be active at the moment.

As one of this issue’s articles point out, October and November are too chilly for many summer activities but also often too hot for many winter activities.

Don’t worry if you still can’t get your skis and snowboard out though, because this gives you a great excuse to explore Oslo’s lively indoor cultural scene!

To get you started on your indoor adventures, this issue gifts you a long and informative article on gallery and museum exhibitions that are definitely worth a visit in October and November - including the year’s biggest contemporary art event.

As always we also include our indispensable overview of a selection of other cultural events, our museums listings and our handy guides to eating, shopping and nightlife. And did you know that Oslo has a mind boggling 5000+ concerts per year – more than Stockholm and Copenhagen combined?

If you’re not packing a tent you probably want to sleep inside too! While many go for hotels and hostels, in this issue we introduce you to a free alternative that has grown massively in popularity – namely “couch surfing”.

As well as being free (you may well end up actually sleeping on a couch!), couch surfing is a great way to meet and hang out with the locals.

Finally, we have decided to look beyond the city borders for once and provide you with an inspiring article on must-see sights all around Norway.

Four days ago. I arrived in Larvik by boat on Monday evening from Denmark, slept under a cover by the entrance to the ticket office for three hours because nobody could give me a ride to Oslo, then hitched to Oslo in two hours on Tuesday.

Where are you staying?

So far I’ve stayed with two members of couchsurfing.com that I met at a social gathering for hosts and visitors when I got here, and in a couple of days I’m hoping to meet a friend of mine who lives here.

Why Oslo?

My heart was telling me to come here because I was missing the north. I think I’d like to go trekking in the wilderness and the first person I couch surfed with here inspired the idea of kite skiing to the North Pole with him, which would be pretty cool! We may even be the first people to do that. As a bonus, Norway’s economy is highly regarded.

What are your impressions of Oslo so far?

I like it. There are lots of parks, which is really nice. I knew nothing about the sights, literally nothing, before I got here.

The only thing I’d heard of is the rock that looks like a tongue (Trolltunga in Hordaland county, Ed.), and I had a general image of nature and snow. And I haven’t really explored that much because I’ve been resting.

But so far people have been really good to me and people in the city seem happy in general. That air of happiness - maybe it’s the summer and people seem well off.

How long are you planning to stay?

My Schengen visa runs out in 13 days, but with luck I’ll get a job here and then I’d say a year. I’d preferably like an internship so I can gain knowledge – ideally as an outdoor guide of some sort, although anything related to nature would be great.

Where and how long have you been travelling during this trip?

I’ve travelled for one year and nine months. Before Oslo I visited Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, Thailand, Nepal, Germany and Denmark.

Why did you embark on such a long and varied trip?

I guess to discover something inside of myself; to discover what makes me happy and what I want to do; to discover my purpose in life.

Have you been couch surfing during the entire trip?

In the traditional sense of using the website, no. Before now I’ve been just meeting people, or sometimes slept in my tent. In Asia I was mainly in big cities and stayed in hostels because it was cheap and because of the language barrier, while in Australia I slept in first one and then another old car that I bought.

Coming to Oslo was a last minute decision and so it seemed like a good idea to try to couch surf – not least as my tent is broken. In addition I stayed with a girl I met in Berlin who’s a proper couch surfer and inspired me to try it out.

Apart from the free accommodation, how do you feel about staying with the locals?

I like it a lot. It allows me to become part of a local culture and often you get the feeling that you’ve been friends for a long time.

It is impossible to talk about classic heavy metal without mentioning the German metal legends of Accept - the largest of the German “teutonic thrash” bands. In 2010 they released their most successful album ever with the comeback album Blood Of The Nations, and in 2012 they followed up with Stalingrad - an album that had even more extremely strong riffs and solos - with epic, catchy and rock solid heavy metal. The weather sucks and you miss summer, you say. Don’t panic: There’s an exhibition for that.

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen October and November tend to be rather tricky months when it comes to the weather. Too cold for typical summer activities like the beach and hanging out in parks, yet often too mild for strapping on skis or a snowboard.

While the air is sharp and clear and the great forests around Oslo are still ripe for exploration, outdoor activities are somewhat more limited than usual. Luckily though, this is the perfect time of year for exploring the many treasures hidden indoors across the city.

The exhibition invites visitors “on a journey through art history from antiquity to 1950, with an emphasis on Norwegian art after 1800”, and presents a chronological overview of Norwegian and international works.

Oslo always has lots of interesting museum and gallery exhibitions of course, but now you don’t have to choose between talking a dip in a forest lake and discovering a new painter.

NORWAY’S LARGEST EXHIBITION

A great starting point both for curious newbies and seasoned enthusiasts is Høstutstillingen (The Autumn Exhibition) at Kunstnernes hus near the Royal Palace. This is Norway’s largest exhibition of contemporary art, with everything from paintings and sculptures to film, performance art and textiles on display.

It began in September and lasts until October 12th.

A HISTORY OF ART

Another of the hottest exhibition spaces on the Oslo map right now is the new Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, housed in a large, ultra-modern and impressive building at Tjuvholmen designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.

The museum hosts permanent exhibitions by famous artists like Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman and Damien Hirst, as well as temporary exhibitions by leading local and international artists.

THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE PAINTING

Of course, no introduction to Oslo’s rich plethora of galleries is complete without a mention of the Munch Museum, where you can see paintings by Edvard Munch. The current exhibition Through Nature focuses on encounters between Munch’s art and natural history.

Norwegian painter and the man behind the painting The Scream – one version of which was sold for 120 million US dollars in 2011, making it the world’s most expensive painting ever sold at a public auction when not accounting for inflation.

Two other versions (one of which is a pastel) are at the museum, and one at The National Gallery.

A GREAT SHOT

If you would prefer to rest your eyes on some great photographs, you can start by dropping by the new and popular Shoot Gallery behind the Royal Castle, Oslo’s first venue dedicated to fine art photography. The current exhibition at time of writing lasts until October 25th and features the works of Dawid (Björn Dawidsson), one of Sweden’s most respected artists.

You can also enlighten yourself at the Nobel Peace Centre by Aker Brygge, with works by the internationally respected Paolo Pellegrin from the famous photo agency Magnum Photos.

These reveal how the normally media shy inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) monitor, find and destroy chemical weapons.

FINE ART, UGLY BUILDINGS

For gallery connoisseurs looking to not only admire fine art but maybe also buy it, look out for shabby buildings with ex-

quisite treasures inside. You see, it just so happens that many of the most respected private galleries in Oslo with works for sale are housed in buildings with rather “humble” facades, to say the least - and sometimes even lacking a sign outside with the name of the gallery.

Such places include Galleri K at Skillebekk, Standard (Oslo) at upper Grünerløkka, OSL Contemporary at Frogner and Galleri Riis, Gerhardsen Gerner and Galleri Brandstrup at Tjuvholmen.

If you would rather delve into the fascinating past and exiting present through (nongallery) museums, there are also plenty of great places to visit all over town.

THE PENINSULA WITH 6 MUSEUMS

The biggest is the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History (Norsk folkemuseum) on Bygdøy, which as well as hosting indoor exhibitions, has collected centuries’ old buildings from all over Norway and put them on display. A great tip is to visit their Spooky Night at the Museum event on October 26th, when you can “join a guided tour in old haunted houses with spooky stories”.

The peninsula on which the museum is based, Bygdøy, is also home to five other interesting museums.

The Viking Ship Museum boasts the world’s best preserved Viking ship, while The Nor-

wegian Maritime Museum is celebrating 100 years and has great new exhibitions, including one tackling Norwegian and global shipping with simulators and games.

FIRST TO THE SOUTH POLE

It is also a hundred years since the birth of Norwegian explorer and anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl, famous for crossing the Pacific Ocean on his “Kon-Tiki” balsa raft in 1947. For this anniversary the Kon-Tiki Museum is hosting new and extended exhibitions on his various exploits.

The Fram Museum among other things hosts Fram (Forward), the ship that helped Roald Amundsenand his team to become the first humans to reach the South Pole, on a trek which cost the lives of the competing team of Britain’s Robert Scott.

The final place on Bygdøy is The Holocaust Centre, a research and exhibition space of impressive ambition that is based in the majestic former villa of Vidkun Quisling - the Norwegian traitor who conspired with Hitler to rule the country during Nazi occupation. The centre focuses on the Holocaust, other genocides, racism and more. It hosts several interesting exhibitions, including a new one about Nazi misuse of Norwegian history during the occupation.

MUSEUM OF THE YEAR

Away from Bygdøy there are naturally lots of other brilliant museums to explore.

The Pop Centre (Popsenteret) at Grünerløkka, last year’s winner of the national award Museum of the Year, lets you delve into the history of Norway’s surprisingly diverse pop music scene, with a particular focus on Oslo and surrounding regions.

A much praised interactive and audio visual centre, it even allows guests to record in their studios, mix their own tracks, carry out album photo-shoots and rerecord famous songs. Lots of sought after memorabilia from 100 years of Norwegian pop history are also on display.

Unlike the Holocaust Centre, Jødisk Museum (Jewish Museum) in the Hausmann quarter of town focuses exclusively on Jewish history. It includes more cheerful subjects such as the gradual integration of Jews into Norway’s lively sports life - in

a country where the 1814 constitution’s so-called “Jewish paragraph” (abolished in 1851) banned Jews from living Norway.

They also arrange special events and you can for instance join their Hanukah celebration on November 10th. In addition the museum was one of three nominated for this year’s museum award.

BIRTH OF A REVOLUTION

If you love the famous Vigeland sculptures in the Frogner Park, you are sure to enjoy the Vigeland Museum.

Photo: Standard (Oslo) / Tarjei Kidd Olsen Located next to the park, it features an almost complete collection of Gustav Vigelands works, including sculptures in plaster, granite, bronze, marble, works in wrought iron and thousands of drawings, woodcuts and woodcarvings. They have the original plasters to his famous busts and monuments, in addition to the plaster models of the sculptures in the park.

A final mention goes to the tiny Labour Museum (Arbeidermuseet) at Sagene, which opened as recently as last year. Located in the area that witnessed the birth of the Norwegian industrial revolution, it gives an insight into the lives of workers and owners at the once mighty factories alongside the banks of the nearby Akerselva river.

Short and free guided weekend tours in the local area include a visit to the museum and culminate with a visit to Brenna, an old labourer’s house in the same street as the museum.

In Peer Gynt, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s famous play from 1867, the braggart and poet Gynt meets the Mountain King on his travels. The king informs Gynt: “Out there, where sky shines, humans say: ‘To thyself be true.’

In here, trolls say: ‘Be true to yourself and to hell with the world.’”

It might not seem very tempting to venture into the mountains of Norway to visit such dangerous rascals. Luckily for us though, Peer Gynt is most likely dreaming in this sequence. And besides, these days most trolls sleepily stand guard at places such as tourist shops, while the rest only venture out at night.

So relax, sit back and join us on an epic trip across our incredibly scenic country.

Mighty mountains, deep fjords

There are other beasts. Bears, wolves, elk and other creatures roam the land.

And in Dovre in Oppland County, the same place where the Mountain King in Peer Gynt lives, there is a very much alive and real population of muskoxen bulky creatures that look a little like hairy arctic versions of the ox.

There are also many beautiful places to visit at Dovre, including the northern parts of Rondane National Park. As well as numerous mountain peaks (such as Trolltinden – the Troll Pinnacle) and other spellbinding sights, Rondane features beautiful mountain heaths to trek across and a number of well-known cabins where it is possible to sleep and eat.

Norway is in fact littered with impressive mountain areas. Another of the most famous is Jotunheimen (“Home of the Giants”) a few hundred km north of Oslo, an area of roughly 3,500 km with the 29 highest mountain peaks in Norway, including Norway’s highest mountain Galdhøpiggen and its most popular mountain range for trekking, known as Besseggen.

Oslo is wonderful, but the rest of Norway is a country of great beauty and mighty beasts that invite you to explore even further.

Other examples include Preikestolen (“The Pulpit Rock”), a cliff edge with an amazing view of the beautiful Lysefjord in southern Norway and Trolltunga (“The Troll Tongue”), another impressive cliff in southern Norway with mighty views of the lake Ringedalsvatnet and situated near the famous Hardangerfjord.

Speaking of fjords, another must-see place is the Geirangerfjord in western Norway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place that lets you take one of the world’s most beautiful ferry rides (from the villages of Geiranger or Hellesylt).

Also well worth visiting is Rallarvegen in central Norway, an 80 km long access road for railroad maintenance folk that doubles as a fantastically scenic route for mountain bikers. It ends in the village of Flåm, dramatically situated on the shores of the Sognefjord.

Vast seas, wild islands

Norway is of course much more than mountains and fjords. Travel down to the coast to discover a world of vast seascapes and beautiful islands,

including the Lofoten Islands.

The Lofoten Islands are located in Nordland County in northern Norway – further north than the Arctic Circle, but due to its specific location also one of the warmest places at such a high latitude.

The islands will impress you with their sharp mountain peaks and sharper air, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched scenery. An awesome place for hiking, they are connected by bridges and can be hopped between by bus, car or bicycle.

Another option is to hit the road, specifically Kystriksveien, a long coastal route through Nordland County with incredible scenery and relaxingly little traffic.

Along the way you have to use ferries in certain places to continue, presenting you with beautiful seascapes, and you can drop by glaciers and interesting off shore islands on your way.

Then there is the famous Hurtigruten, a coastal ferry that on its daily journeys from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north showcases the entire coast of Norway, in what is one of the most spectacular coast trips you are likely to ever experience.

On the 5-6 day long trip you will dock at remote villages, encounter coastal fjords, cross the Arctic Circle and generally experience some of the best that Norway’s long coastline has to offer, and all in a conveniently short time.

Polar Bears

Did we mention beasts? That’s certainly what you can encounter if you decide to really get adventurous and catch a flight to Svalbard, an island chain roughly halfway between continental Norway and the North Pole.

Among icy peaks, icier glaciers (60% of Svalbard is covered by them), barren but beautiful plains and stunning fjords, you have a good chance of bumping into some particularly impressive locals polar bears. They outnumber the human population on the islands and make up about a sixth of the total polar bear population of the world.

On Spitsbergen, the biggest of the islands, you will find Longyearbyen, which with its 2000 inhabitants is the biggest

settlement on the islands as well as the world’s northernmost town.

Where to start?

Norway’s has been blessed with such an unfairly large amount of fantastic sights and attractions that it’s hard to know where to start and beyond the beasts and beautiful scenery, there are countless other things to experience as well.

From the medieval Stave Churches of southern and central Norway, the Jugendstil-inspired and postcard perfect island town of Ålesund, or the port city of Bergen with its Hanseatic, centuries old Bryggen quay area, to the unique culture and language of the Sami peoples of the north, the possibilities are almost endless.

In the end then, it doesn’t really matter where you start – just as long as you’re prepared for the trip of a lifetime. And what better place to start dreaming than in Oslo, the capital of culture and nature!

Single tickets can be purchased from the driver, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro, tickets must be purchased before entering the train.

Houses the best preserved Viking ships in the world and the original burial gifts.

The ships were discovered in three large burial mounds where they had been buried to serve as vessels for their rich owners’ final journey to the realm of the dead.

The Oseberg Ship

was built around 820 AD and was used as a burial ship for a powerful woman and her maidservant.

The Gokstad Ship

was built around 890 AD and used as a burial ship for a chieftain.

The Tune Ship

was built around 900 AD.

The museum shop sells books and souvenirs, postcards and jewellery.

Fram is the most famous ship in polar history, known for its amazing expeditions to the North and South Poles.

Thor Heyerdahl (19142002) gained worldwide fame when he crossed the Pacific Ocean on the balsa raft Kon-Tiki in 1947.

The original Kon-Tiki is on display at The Kon-Tiki Museum. The museum is allso home to permanent exhibitions about: Ra, Tigris, Fatu-Hiva, and Easter Island.

This year Thor Heyerdahl would have been 100 years and new exhibition about Galapagos, extended Kon-Tiki exhibition and Easter Island exhibition is made to celebrate his anniversary. The Easter Island Exhibition is the greatest in the world outside Easter Island.

Jump in “Kollen” and find out what it feels like to head down the world’s toughest downhill ski slopes alongside the world’s best performers on two skis.

Technology which used to be available only to pilots and astronauts combines flight simulator movements with an ‘eye-view’ movie to create a unique and realistic feel.

AKERSHUS CASTLE AND FORTRESS Spend a day at Akershus fortress and experience centuries of Norwegian history. Once an active fortress, the area is now a place for official representation, culture, learning and recreation. Within the fortress walls you will find two museums, a castle, beautiful views of the fjord and the city – and history from the Viking age to modern times.

Akershus castle was built as a fortified medieval castle around the year 1300.

Since then the castle has been at the centre of events in Norwegian history.

Today it is used for state representation and cultural events. A tour of the castle takes you through the Government representation rooms, The Castle Church, The Royal Mausoleum and The Dungeon.

The Visitor Centre Akershus fortress 30

The Visitor Centre is located in the ‘long red house’ from 1774 by the Carp pond. It is the natural starting point for a visit of the grounds. Our staff is up to date on the cultural events at the fortress and offer historical information on this unique monument of Norwegian history.

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945.

Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions.

Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

The museum covers Norwegian military history, from the Viking era (ca.

900 - 1000), through the numerous Nordic wars under Danish rule (ca. 1400 - 1814) to the Napoleonic wars. New permanent exhibition about the union with Sweden opens in November. The exhibition about World War II campaign 1940 is currently undergoing redisplay. Modern history includes War at Sea 1939 1945, the Cold War period and recent international operations.

The museum will be closed due to constructional work untill mid October.

There are a wide variety of department stores, boutiques, shopping districts with hundreds of outlets, charming antique shops, flea markets, exclusive international brands and local handicrafts.

Oslo City

Shopping malls & department stores

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre.

Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings.

Getting started: Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the

same building as Oslo S. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan.no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house and offers over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store near Stortinget with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. At Aker Brygge, the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations are ongoing, but many of the shops that are gathered here have already reopened in new premises or are housed in temporary constructions outside, and the historic yet stylish area is well worth a visit. Large shopping malls outside the city centre include the recently opened Storo Storsenter (Vitaminveien 7-9 / thonshopping.no/storo), Sandvika Stors-

enter (Brodtkorpgate 7 / thonshopping.no/ sandvika) and CC Vest (Lilleakerveien 16 / ccvest.no).

Vintage & secondhand

Most vintage and second-hand stores are found in the Grünerløkka area, although there are some more gems spread around town.

Getting started: Fretex (fretex.no), Norway’s biggest chain of second-hand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF has two stores in Oslo: UFF Underground (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/uff-underground) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy second-hand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Family Store (Jernbanetorget 2 / uffnorge.no) with a more conventional second-hand selection.

Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2 / fuglen.no) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 33 / frokendianassalonger.no) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22A / trabantclothing. com) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.

Damm’s Antiquarian Books (Frederik Stangs gate 46 / damms.no), the oldest antiquarian book store in Scandinavia, as well as antiques shop Galleri Gimle Arts and Antiques (Gimleveien 21 / galleri-gimle. no). Basarhallene (Lille Grensen 3) houses several handicraft and antique shops.

Books & music

There are plenty of places around town to satisfy your appetite for books and music. To get you started we’ll mention just a few of the more unique ones.

Getting started: Bare Jazz (Grensen 8 / barejazz.no) is a great jazz-only specialty music store with a café and a place to hear good jazz music, sometimes live, while nearby Big Dipper (Møllergata 1 / bigdipper.no) has a large selection of vinyl.

Eldorado Bookstore (Torggata 9A / eldo. no) is the largest independent bookstore in Scandinavia, with 4,000 square metres of books, culture and music, including Norway’s largest departments for children’s books, audio books and classical music, and a coffee shop, back yard restaurant and four stages. Tronsmo (Kristian Augusts gate 19 / tronsmo.no) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like

Art & antiques

There are quite a lot of places to check out around town for those who would like to get in touch with their artistic or antiquarian sides. Take a stroll and explore beautiful paintings, art magazines, old books, handicrafts and antique furniture.

Getting started: The popular Vestkanttorvet Market (Vestkanttorvet (Professor Dahls gate) / vestkanttorvet. wordpress.com) is Oslo’s oldest market, and the place to go for bric-a-brac and antiques on Sundays. The art shop at the Stenersen Museum (Munkedamsveien 15 / stenersenmuseet.no) has a great selection of art magazines and books, which could come in handy when you visit Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5 / blomqvist.no), Norway’s largest auction house specializing in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques.

politics, feminism, gay & lesbian issues, movies and ficition, has a good selection of English-language literature, and a basement full of comic books.

The Nobel Peace Center Gift Shop in the Nobel Peace Center (Brynjulf Bulls plass 1 / nobelpeacecenter.org) has books related to war, peace and development. The shop in the Museum of Contemporary Art (Bankplassen 4) is well worth a visit, especially for lovers of photographic art.

In the National Gallery’s shop you will find a broad selection of books on art.

Design

Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours.

Getting started: Moods of Norway (moodsofnorway.com) in the city centre (Akersgata 18), Homansbyen (Hegdehaugsveien 34) and Stortorvet (Stortorvet 3), is a chain of stores and a hip Norwegian designer brand with funky clothes for every occasion – and the slogan “Happy Clothes for Happy People”. David-Andersen (david-andersen.no) stores have a great selection of gold, diamond, silver and enamel jewelry. Conzept (Steenstrups gate

12 / www.purenkel.no) is a shop and gallery hybrid with Norwegian, Swedish and Danish designer clothing, as well as exhibits of Norwegian design and art. At Norway Designs (Stortingsgata 28 / norwaydesigns. no) you’ll find great Norwegian, Nordic and European interior design articles, and at Pur Norsk (Industrigata 36 / purnorsk.no) you can buy Norwegian design products such as furniture and personal items.

Heimen husflid (Rosenkrantz’ gate 8 / heimen.net) is a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, blankets, arts and crafts and much more, and the shop Illums bolighus (Ruseløkkveien 26 / illumsbolighus.no) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.

Food & delicacies

You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate.

places on the Oslo food map is Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) – Norway’s very first food hall. In this red brick former factory building at Grünerløkka by the Akerselva river, you’ll find about 30 food shops and eateries offering a tasty and fascinating selection of food and delicacies from various regions of Norway and further afield. The fish shop at Tjuvholmen Sjømagasin (Tjuvholmen allé 14 / sjomagasinet.no) as well as Fiskeriet (Youngstorget 2 / fiskeriet.com) are two great places to pick up freshly caught sea food such as fish and shellfish, fair-trade treats, local produce and special imports, and the latter has a bistro with seasonal produce. And if you have a sweet tooth, Freia Chocolate Shop (Karl Johans gate 31 / freia.no) offers tasty, high quality Norwegian chocolate.

Luxury & high-end

Oslo’s luxury and upmarket shopping opportunities have grown fast in recent years, and can be found in many parts of town, but especially on and near Karl Johans gate as well as on the city’s wealthy west side.

Getting started: Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan.no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house, and stocks over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. House of Oslo (Ruseløkkveien 26 / houseofoslo.no) is Norway’s first and only department store that specializes in high-end design, interior and lifestyle, and contains over 20 shops that sell everything from teaspoons to sofas. Upmarket stores with self-explanatory names include Gucci (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Hermés (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Louis Vuitton (Akersgata 20) and Mulberry (Akersgata 18). On and around Bogstadveien on the city’s west side there are also a number of high-end stores, and nearby you’ll for instance find Kamikaze (Hegdehaugsveien 24 / kamikaze.no), with brands such as Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli.

Souvenirs No visit to Oslo is complete without at least one souvenir! While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you.

Getting started: No less than three souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. And once you’ve been to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, why not drop by the Vigeland Visitors’ Centre (Frognerveien 67) just inside the main gates of the park, where you can pick up even more souvenirs.

In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular at the moment.

The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs.

GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45 / lasttrain.no), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3 / radissonblu. com/plazahotel-oslo/dining/skybar-34), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9 / jaegeroslo.no) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7 / izakayaoslo.com) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu.

Grünerløkka

Just northeast of the city centre is Grüner-

løkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular.

GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / fruhagen.no) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / parkteatret.no) is equally popular, as is Blå (Brenneriveien 9 / blaaoslo.no) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds.

Norway’s first food hall Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) has a number of interesting bars, including Smelteverket with the city’s longest bar disk and mini concerts.

Grønland

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laid-back clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town.

GETTING STARTED: Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10 / dattera.no) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard. Ivars kro (Grønland 14 / ivarskro. no) is a pianobar with live music every night and a large bar with a good selection of drinks, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34 / oslomekaniskeverksted. no) is a big and cozy bar/pub with a big fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Youngstorget

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music.

GETTING STARTED: The newest offering is Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3 / kulturhusetioslo.no), covering a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4 / cafemono.no) is a dark and relaxed bar/ pub/concert stage that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2 / internasjonalen.no), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25 / thevilla.no), Fisk & Vilt (Pløens gate 4 / fiskogvilt.no) and Turkish Delight (Torggata 35 / turkish.no) appeal to the electronic music crowd, with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32 / revolveroslo.no) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco.

This is a great place to go for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean.

Frogner & Majorstua

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight.
