IT AIN’T OVER ‘TIL IT’S OCTOBER Welcome to What’s On Oslo in October, when the summer is well and truly over. “It Ain’t Over ‘til It’s Over”. The immortal words of American baseball legend Yogi Berra, almost as famous for his clever and paradoxical statements as for his sporting prowess. And in the spirit of doing anything for a cheesy rhyme here at What’s On, we’re replacing “over” with “October”. For while September is a kind of summer twilight month in Oslo, by October there can be no doubt: things are cooling down and summer is truly over. Depending on your point of view, that can be both good (“autumn leaves!”; “beautiful melancholy!”) and bad (“cold!”; “dark!”; “I miss the beach!”). “It’s a little chilly, but quite refreshing,” is a common statement among Norwegians in October. “Chilly? It’s freezing!” is a not unusual retort among their visiting friends from warmer parts of the world. But fear not! Luckily for you, dear reader, we have packed this issue of What’s On Oslo with plenty of things to do both inside and outside, so you can be as hot or cold as you want at any given moment. Why not take the kids along and visit the unique International Museum of
Children’s Art, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and has at least 150.000 works of art from children in at least 185 countries? Read our article about the museum inside and check out their upcoming events in our museum listing section. AKERSHUS CASTLE AND FORTRESS Spend a day at Akershus fortress and experience centuries of Norwegian history. Once an active fortress, the area is now a place for official representation, culture, learning and recreation. Within the fortress walls you will find two museums, a castle, beautiful views of the fjord and the city – and history from the Viking age to modern times.
Akershus castle was built as a fortified medieval castle around the year 1300. Since then the castle has been at the centre of events in Norwegian history. Today it is used for state representation and cultural events. A tour of the castle takes you through the Government representation rooms, The Castle Church, The Royal Mausoleum and The Dungeon.

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

Experience a meeting between two Nordic Masters of art in the exhibition Jorn+Munch. This is the first bigger presentation of the Danish artist Asger Jorn in Norway. The exhibition looks closer at the impact Edvard Munch had on Jorns art. Jorn+Munch is the last exhibition in the +Munch series, which has given the Munch Museum a new record number of visitors, and a top-three nomination in the Norwegian Visitor Award 2016. SILAS HENRIKSEN is a ballet dancer at The Norwegian National Ballet. He has also danced for Nederlands Dans Theater in the Netherlands and toured the world performing at prestigious venues. You can see him in the performance An Evening with León & Lightfoot at the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, which lasts until October 15th.
What motivates you to dance? It gives me satisfaction to be able to earn a living with a hobby I’ve had since I was a kid. Also, I feel very lucky to be allowed to work with a practicing artistic profession, and especially in an institution like the Opera which has the country’s biggest ballet apparatus. I’m very grateful to be able to take part in the productions that are arranged there. And I know that it won’t last forever, so I know that this is a time I have now. A dance career is quite short. Even though it is very demanding to be a practicing dancer, it is something I have to
appreciate here and now. In ten years I will most probably not be a dancer. The pension age at the Opera House is 41 years. Many dancers quit before that as well. Some continue, but you can’t perform at the same level. After all, it’s when you are young that you have the healthiest and fastest body. It’s not like with singers, who can get better with age. Our ‘instrument’ starts going downhill at a point in time. What do dancers do when they are finished dancing? Many become educators and teach, some become choreographers, but in general

dancers end up doing many different things. In my case I think I’ll always work in theatre or in a creative field. I think that can be a good thing, because creativity is what we work with on stage as well. I also run Tableau Paper, which has been a free fashion publication and will become a magazine you can buy in Narvesen kiosks from October. So I’m juggling other things already. Dancing, then, is a demanding career. In which ways is it demanding? I would absolutely say so, yes. It’s not something that suits everyone. There is the physical and psychological aspect. In my mind, to do this for many years you really have to know why you’re doing what you’re doing. We all have different ambitions in-house here, but it is so hard physically and psychologically that many times it’s not a career you choose just kind of randomly. It’s a big part of my life and its part of an identity and a lifestyle in many ways. It’s not really a nine-to-five kind of job. It’s very intense and very rewarding. Do you have time for a life outside of dancing?

Right now during the build up to the premiere of the next performance I’m taking part in, not really. But I’d say that I do in many ways otherwise. Although of course I notice that there are limitations there, that there are many things I can’t get done that I’d like to get done. Especially now that I’m getting a bit older and have entered a new part of my career, I notice that I don’t have as much energy as before and can’t get as much done after work as I used to. I have become better at taking care of myself and at conserving energy than before. Now I’m sitting in the sofa, for instance! During your years with Nederlands Dans Theater you also toured the world. Could you tell me a bit about that? It was five very interesting years, very nice years. I began there when I was 25 and came home when I was 30, so I feel that I grew up there in many ways. It changed me, in a way. And yes, I also toured the world a lot and saw and experienced very many things, so I’m very grateful for that part of my career. It’s been a school. When I got that chance, I couldn’t have declined. But I’m also very glad to be back in Oslo.
How does life as a dancer here differ from life as a dancer in the Netherlands? In Scandinavian dance ensembles in general we have very strong worker’s unions with many rules about what is allowed and not allowed, related to things such as work hours. In the Netherlands things were more fluid, with many people a similar age and maybe not so many with families. Here people are many different ages and people live a different kind of life. And it’s more of an institution here. But again, it’s intense everywhere. But I feel that maybe in the Netherlands there wasn’t such a big separation between your work and private life. We had a private life, but in a way dancing was even more work there; even more of a lifestyle. Do you miss that? Both yes and no. When I first came home last year I was very happy about being able to stay in one place. In the Netherlands I had to commute a lot. But it could well be that I become a little more restless this year, because I’ve always liked the touring aspect as it creates more unity in a group and it’s
more intense. At the same time it’s great to be able to go straight home after work here. So, so far so good, but I think I might become a little bit restless in time, yes. You will dance in the performance A Night with León & Lightfoot, which premieres soon. Can you tell me a bit about that, too? It is an evening split into three and choreographed by León & Lightfoot, who I also had as choreographers in the Netherlands. It is three ballet performances from different periods of their careers. One is called Sad Case and is the oldest of the three and the second is Sleight of Hand. The third performance is a new ballet called Same Difference. There is a variety in atmosphere and epoch and the whole performance has a very charismatic style and its own language and dance universe. Both the language and aesthetics are a genuine mark of that choreographer duo and it’s a very visual party in many ways. It’s an experience that I hope many will come to see. I think it can inspire and I think it can enrich people’s lives. That sounds like a really pretentious thing to say! But I think that if you come and see this experience you’ll leave the hall with an enthusiasm of one kind or another. Because it’s an explosive dance, it’s rich in details, the scenography and costumes are fantastic. I’d go so far as to say it’s dance at its best in many cases. And finally, the question we ask all our Oslo People interviewees. What are some special places in Oslo that you can recommend for our readers? There are so many nice places in Oslo, but if you want to experience a different kind of park then “Idioten” behind the St. Hanshaugen Park is a magic place for a coffee or a picnic. On Saturdays I sometimes go to the sauna at Vestkantbadet and also eat breakfast at Åpent Bakeri behind the Royal Castle. Or even more incognito, at Samson in Gyldenløves gate - the city’s most refined little bakery.

Thirty Childish Years The world’s first child art museum turns 30 in October, right here in Oslo. Discover the unfiltered wisdom and boundless creativity of childhood. Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen
“HOW IS IT POSSIBLE?” “WOW, REALLY?” Those are two of the most common reactions by first-time adult visitors to The International Museum of Children’s Art, according to the museum’s director Angela Goldin.
BECAUSE HEY, KID’S STUFF IS JUST FOR KIDS, RIGHT? Wrong, it turns out. And for those in the know, it’s not even news: The museum has spent 30 years collecting more than 150.000 artworks, many of which display creativity and insight to convert the most sceptical of grownups. The collection consists mainly of pictures, but also textiles and 3D-in-

stallations, from children and young people in 185 countries. Many of the artworks are joyful expressions of young imagination, artworks that can lift the soul with their lightness of being, and there are lots of interesting and entertaining things to experience.
“ADULT THEMES”, CHILDREN’S PERSPECTIVES But children have the capacity for gravitas, too. You need look no further than this issue’s vibrant front page picture, titled On Father’s Day. It was painted by 9-year old Romanian girl Ada Maria Ciontu as part of a museum project focused on children’s relationship to their fathers in connection with Father’s Day in 2013.

Ada’s mother sent the painting to the museum in the post, and then she sent an e-mail. She and Ada’s father, she explained, had separated earlier that year. She had been unsure if it was a good idea to involve Ada in the project, considering the understandable sensitivity of the subject in their family.

In the end, Ada’s mother wrote, she had decided it was too good an opportunity to pass up. And Ada? Her mother says it turned out that the little 9-year old relished the opportunity to express her feelings about the bond between her and her father, unspoken feelings that art could unleash.
As time has passed at the museum, the fact that children are always a part of our developing society has also revealed some interesting trends. For instance, when the museum ran their 2013 project on children’s relationships to their fathers, it was a repeat of a similar project back in the 1980s.
There are darker subjects, too. For instance, the museum has art from children that are in Syria, that were in Chernobyl, that have experienced earthquakes and tsunamis, or live with HIV/AIDS. - Children are also a part of these events. Take for instance the conflict in Syria, where half of those affected are children and young people. So really it’s a necessity for society to see these perspectives and we have a mandate as a museum to

- In 2013 we received about 2500 art contributions from 36 countries and we saw that, depending on where in the world children live, their relationships to father has maybe changed a bit, says Angela. - Before, a typical image could be a child kissing his dad on the cheek, as they sit on the sofa watching TV. In 2013 it was a briefcase and iPad. Families are always tight, but often they spend a lot less time together today, she says.
A MUSEUM THAT APPEALS TO YOUR IDENTITY - What kind of reactions to the museum’s artwork do you get from visitors? - There are a lot of positive reactions. The interesting thing here is that our concept is international, so wherever our visitors are from, as parents they can refer to their own childhoods, while children think it’s fun and interesting to see what other children have managed to make. People get a sense of belonging and their own identities can be strengthened. - And that “Is it possible?” Those kinds of comments are repeated all the time. People never cease to be amazed by what children and the young can achieve, because we all have a perception of what they can and can’t do. Adults pass on much knowledge to children, so it’s fun to see that when people come here a bit

IT ALL STARTED WITH A DIVORCE While there are a number of museums dedicated to children’s art around the world today, The International Museum of Children’s Art was a world first when it opened on October 1st 1986. But without a divorce, it might never have happened. - When my mother met my stepdad, he had a divorce in his past, and he had lost paternity rights to his son, says Angela, who is the daughter of the museum’s founders and has dedicated her life to it. - He made a documentary film called Father – Seen with Norwegian Children’s Eyes. It featured children’s drawings and other art where the focus was purely on fathers, and there were a lot of strong contributions from children themselves about how important their fathers were for them. It was obvious that children could contribute very powerful perspectives. - My parents thought, “Ok, we have all this material, but what do we do with
it? How shall we manage it?” Then they discovered that there were many other museums with exhibitions about children, but none with exhibitions by children.
IT’S TIME FOR A PARTY On October 1st, 30 years to the day after the museum’s founding, it will celebrate with, of course, a proper kid’s birthday party. It will be an “open day” with birthday balloons, birthday cake, music, face painting and an anniversary exhibition, with highlights from several of the museum’s art projects during the last three decades. - We will quite simply be celebrating that we have existed this long, if I may put it that way, with everything reAngela levant to a child’s birthday party, Goldin except that it’s suited for everyone from 0 to 100, Angela promises. Of course, as this magazine will be published on October 1st, chances are you’ll be late to the party! But fear not, as the anniversary exhibition will last for the rest of the year, and at The International Museum of Children’s Art, every day is a party for the senses.

Oslo has a great selection of interesting shops. There are a wide variety of department stores, boutiques and shopping districts with hundreds of outlets, charming antique shops, flea markets, exclusive international brands and local handicrafts.
SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES
Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten. no), which has a further 70 shops. Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), in the oldest part of Oslo Central Station, has an attractive new dining and shopping area, a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan. no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house with over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store near Stortinget with many well-known Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet.no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shopping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (akerbrygge.no), the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened in 2014 with lots of stores.

Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2 / fuglen.no) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 56 / frokendianassalonger.no) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22 / trabantclothing. com) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.
ART & ANTIQUES
There are quite a lot of places to check out around town for those who would like to get in touch with their artistic or antiquarian sides. Take a stroll and explore beautiful paintings, art magazines, old books, handicrafts and antique furniture. The popular Vestkanttorvet Flea Market (Vestkanttorvet (Professor Dahls gate) / vestkanttorvet.wordpress.com) is Oslo’s oldest market, and the place to go for bric-a-brac and antiques on Saturdays (March – December). Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5 / blomqvist. no) is Norway’s largest auction house and specializes in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques. You might also want to take a look at Damm’s Antiquarian Books (Frederik Stangs gate 46 / damms.no), the oldest antiquarian book store in Scandinavia, as well as antiques shop Galleri Gimle Arts and Antiques (Gimleveien 21 / galleri-gimle.no). Basarhallene (Lille Grensen 3) houses several handicraft and antique shops.

BOOKS & MUSIC
Most vintage and secondhand stores are found in the Grünerløkka area, although there are some more gems spread around town.
There are plenty of places around town to satisfy your appetite for books and music. To get you started we’ll mention just a few of the more unique ones.
Fretex (fretex.no), Norway’s biggest chain of secondhand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF has two stores in Oslo: UFF Underground (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-underground-butikk) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy secondhand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Jernbanetorget (Jernbanetorget 2 / www.uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-jernbanetorget) with a more
Bare Jazz (Grensen 8 / barejazz.no) is a great jazz-only specialty music store with a café and a place to hear good jazz music, sometimes live, while nearby Big Dipper (Møllergata 1 / bigdipper.no) has a large selection of vinyl. Eldorado Bookstore (Torggata 9A / eldo.no) is the largest independent bookstore in Scandinavia, with 4,000 square metres of books, culture and music, including Norway’s largest departments for children’s books, audio books and classical music, and a coffee shop, back yard restaurant and

Tronsmo (Universitetsgata 12 / tronsmo.no) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like politics, feminism, gay & lesbian issues, movies and ficition, has a good selection of English-language literature, and a basement full of comic books. The Nobel Peace Center Gift Shop in the Nobel Peace Center (Brynjulf Bulls plass 1 / nobelpeacecenter.org) has books related to war, peace and development. The book shops of The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (Universitetsgata 13 / nasjonalmuseet.no) are well worth a visit. They sell books related to the fields of the four institutions tied to the museum: The National Gallery, The National Museum – Architecture, The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
DESIGN
Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. Moods of Norway (moodsofnorway.com) on Oslo’s main street (Karl Johans gate 13), near Parliament (Akersgata 33), and in Homansbyen (Hegdehaugsveien 34), is a chain of stores and a hip Norwegian designer brand with funky clothes for every occasion – and the slogan “Happy Clothes for Happy People”. David-Andersen (david-andersen.no) stores have a great selection of gold, diamond, silver and enamel jewelry. Purenkel (Steenstrups gate 12 / www.purenkel.no) is a shop and gallery
hybrid with stylish design and handicraft items as well as workshops. At Norway Designs (Stortingsgata 28 / norwaydesigns. no) you’ll find great Norwegian, Nordic and European interior design articles, and at Pur Norsk (Industrigata 36 / purnorsk. no) you can buy Norwegian design products such as furniture and personal items. Heimen husflid (Rosenkrantz’ gate 8 / heimen.no) is a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, blankets, arts and crafts and much more, and the shop Illums bolighus (Ruseløkkveien 26 / illumsbolighus.no) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.
FOOD & DELICACIES
You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate. One of the hottest places on the Oslo food map is Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) – Norway’s very first food hall. In this red brick former factory building at Grünerløkka by the Akerselva river, you’ll find about 30 food shops and eateries offering a tasty and fascinating selection of food and delicacies from various regions of Norway and further afield. Fiskeriet (Youngstorget 2 / fiskeriet. com) is a great place to pick up freshly

caught sea food such as fish and shellfish, fair-trade treats, local produce and special imports, and has a bistro with seasonal produce. And if you have a sweet tooth, Freia Chocolate Shop (Karl Johans gate 31) offers tasty, high quality Norwegian chocolate from Freia, Norway's traditional and biggest chocolate manufacturer.
LUXURY & HIGH-END
Oslo’s luxury and upmarket shopping opportunities have grown fast in recent years, and can be found in many parts of town, but especially on and near Karl Johans gate as well as on the city’s wealthy west side. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B / egerkarljohan.no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house, and stocks over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. House of Oslo (Ruseløkkveien 26 / houseofoslo.no) is Norway’s first and only department store that specializes in high-end design, interior and lifestyle, and contains over 20 shops that sell everything from teaspoons to sofas. Upmarket stores with self-explanatory names include Gucci (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Hermés (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Louis Vuitton (Akersgata 20) and Mulberry (Akersgata 18). On and around Bogstadveien on the city’s west side there are also a number of high-end stores, and nearby you’ll for instance find

No visit to Oslo is complete without at least one souvenir! While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you. At the new Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1), next to Oslo Central station, you will also find Oslo Gift Shop (ostbanehallen.no/butikk/oslo-gift-shop), where you can buy classic souvenir items like trolls, lusekofte, wollen socks and much more. Meanwhile, two souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. These are Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm. no), which sells a lots of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. Oslo Sweater Shop in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel (Holbergs gate 30 / sweater.no) as well as in Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania (Biskop Gunnerus’ gate 3 / sweater.no) has the country’s largest selection of Norwegian sweaters as well as many other souvenirs. And once you’ve been to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, why not drop by the Vigeland Visitors’ Centre (Frognerveien 67) just inside the main gates of the park, where you can pick up even more souvenirs. u

WINE & DINE The Nordic way of cooking has undergone a renaissance during the last decade and Oslo has been building its reputation as a capital of taste at breakneck speed. Here are some suggested restaurants to get you started on your culinary adventures in Norwayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital! TASTY SHOPPING! The Paleet shopping centre in Karl Johans gate 37-43 has surprisingly many great restaurants. Here is a mini-guide: Taqueria provides a genuine Mexican atmosphere in the middle of Oslo, while The Room is a classic, refined and continental highend cafĂŠ. Pizza Crudo serves you great pizzas prepared the original Italian way, Sabaki provides a visual and gastronomic experience in the Japanese art of cooking and Public Matpub is a gastropub offering micro brewed beers and exiting, honest food.

Engebret Café (Bankplassen 1) is situated in Oslo’s oldest restaurant area. The low corner building was built in the 1700s, and in 1857 Café Engebret opened its doors for the first time. 34 Restaurant (Sonja Henies plass 3) on the 34th floor of Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel, offers amazing views of the city and a selection of delicate dishes made from quality organic and local ingredients. Arakataka (Mariboes gate 7) is an informal gourmet restaurant just around the corner from Rockefeller Music Hall. Baltazar Ristorante & Enoteca (Domkirkeparken) is a charming and exclusive Italian restaurant in the courtyard behind Oslo Cathedral. Madu (Kongens gate 5) in stylish design hotel Grims Grenka offers modernized versions of classical Scandinavian cuisine, using local raw and organic products (mainly fish and shellfish) wherever possible. Oro Bar & Grill (Tordenskiolds gate 6) is a top notch but informal eatery and bar in the city centre with a simple, honest and rustic menu, while the slightly more formal gourmet restaurant ORO Restaurant is located next door. Vaaghals (Dronning Eufemias gate 8) offers Nordic gourmet in bright and modern premises in one of the Barcode buildings near the central station and is listed in the prestigous 2016 Michelin food guide. Statholdergaarden (Rådhusgate 11), another "Michelin-restaurant", this time with the extra honour of one Michelin star, serves high quality classic Norwegian dishes in a beautiful 17th century house.

The Kasbah (Kingos gate 1B) is a relaxing corner café/restaurant at Alexander Kiellands plass - a great place to hang out and enjoy delicious Mediterranean food and drinks. A larger place at Alexander Kiellands plass is the popular Colonel Mustard (Darres gate 2), where you can play an impressive number of board games while enjoying tasty Europeanand United States-inspired dishes and a great selection of beers. Sagene Lunsjbar (Maridalsveien 153) is a cozy and wellknown lunch bar with a good selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, burgers, dinners, deserts - and a fun children’s menu. Mat & Mer (Bergensgate 2) is a restaurant with tasty food at reasonable prices, and includes a delicatessen where you can buy things like bread, mustard and freshly ground coffee. For maximum
cosiness you have the tiny Caminito café (Torshovgata 1), which serves delicious Argentinian-Italian fusion food (and some great pizzas!). Hvaskjer (Vogtsgate 64) is a cultural house inside the Soria Moria building at Torshov that has a restaurant with a meat maturing cabinet, wood-fired grill and beer, wine and cocktail bars.

Restaurant Schrøder (Waldemar Thranes gate 8) is a classic and quite relaxed pub and restaurant with traditional Norwegian food on the menu. Albertine Indisk Tandoori (Hallings gate 3) is a friendly restaurant with great Indian food at low prices. Arte Pazza Ristorante Pizzeria (Ullevålsveien 61) is a locally popular and authentic pizzeria, gelateria, pasticcheria and bakery. Smalhans (Waldemar Thranes gate 10) is a local eatery that has received a lot of attention for its tasty fusion food and for encouraging customers to share the dishes they order with their friends at the table, reminiscent of the tapas approach. Café Tekehtopa (St Olavs plass 2) is a pearl of an eatery which has a wonderfully classic look, with creaky wooden floors, a chandelier, and tasty and solid traditional food from several countries. Pascal (Ullevålsveien 47) is a French neighbourhood bistro with simple and mouth-watering French meals.

Delicatessen (Søndre gate 8) is a casual tapas bar which serves a great selection of tapas, sandwiches and salads. Villa Paradiso (Olaf Ryes plass 8) is particularly well known for its authentic Italian pizza, made with imported Italian ingredients. Nighthawk Diner (Seilduksgata 15) is a provider of tasty American-style food in an America-style diner, while you can get solid portions of mouth-watering Mexican food at Mucho Mas (Thorvald Meyersgate 36). Tijuana (Thorvald Meyers gate 61) is another Mexican restaurant with great food, but this time also with a great backyard and a big selection of tequila, rum and cocktails with authentic Mexican approaches. Lofoten Fish Restaurant (Stranden 75) is an elegant yet relaxed seafood restaurant on the edge of Aker Brygge, with an exquisite maritime menu. Beach Club (Bryggetorget 14) is a classic American diner that has become a legend on the social scene in Oslo after 20 years at Aker Brygge. FRU K (Landgangen 1) at Tjuvholmen is a highend restaurant in The Thief designer hotel that uses the best local ingredients to create a new spin on Norwegian and Scandinavian culinary traditions. And if you want to enjoy modern international á la carte, seasonal 3-5 dish menus and great wine and cocktails (not to mention their large terrace with a fabulous view of the fjord), Bølgen & Moi Tjuvholmen (Tjuvholmen allé 5) is definitely worth a visit. Skur 33 (Akershusstranda 11), situated a short walk eastwards along the coast from Aker Brygge, is a unique restaurant in an old port warehouse which specialises in Italian seafood right by the sea. Festningen restaurant (Myntgata 9) is on top of nearby Akershus Fortress, offering amazing views of the fjord, rustic premises in a historic building, and fantastic Norwegian food with sometimes international touches.
HOLMENKOLLEN
Frognerseteren (Holmenkollveien 200) is a restaurant with traditional Norwegian food situated at the top of Holmenkollen, with panoramic views of Oslo and the Oslo Fjord. De Fem Stuer (Kongeveien 26) is a gourmet restaurant at Holmenkollen Park Hotel Rica offering international cuisine with a Norwegian slant and a great view. Holmenkollen Restaurant (Holmenkollveien 119) has great gourmet food, a special rustic atmosphere and a lovely location with another great view. Restaurant Nils Holgersson (Ullveien 4) at the Voksenåsen Culture and Conference Hotel uses Norwegian ingredients to make dishes with a Nordic slant, and offers yet another great view.

Villa Paradiso, already considered by many to have the city’s best pizza at its Grünerløkka restaurant, recently opened a second restaurant at Frogner (Sommerogata 17). Kolonihagen Frogner (Frognerveien 33) is based in a converted horse stall and as well as offering a very atmospheric setting, it serves lunch and light dishes throughout the day and a seasonal sample menu if you’re really hungry. Restaurant Ni & Tyve (Parkveien 29) is located in Oslo’s oldest surviving wooden villa, from 1847, serving Scandinavian season-based food. Sawan (President Harbitz gate 4) is an elegant Asian restaurant with a tranquil atmosphere and delicious food.

Krishnas Cuisine (Sørkedalsveien 10, Majorstuen) is a popular and budget-friendly vegetarian restaurant with good food. Vegan Loving Hut (Fredensborgveien 29, Majorstuen and also Bjerregaards gate 6, St. Hanshaugen) is a vegan take-away restaurant with an Asian slant, and a part of the international Loving Hut chain of take aways. Funky Fresh Foods (Hausmannsgate 16, city centre near Grünerløkka) is a trendy vegan and raw food café and restaurant in the DogA design centre.
Kvadrat Salat (Prinsens gate 18, Kvadraturen area in city centre) is a popular salad bar with delicious vegetarian salads that you compose yourself from what they have on offer. The Fragrance of the Heart (Fridtjof Nansens plass 2, city centre near Oslo Central Station) is a café in the Glassmagasinet shopping centre with vegetarian, vegan and raw lunch dishes and desserts.

Tøyengata Bodega (Heimdalsgata 37, Tøyen) is a relaxed café with a budget friendly menu. Café Sara (Hausmanns gate 29, city centre near Grünerløkka) is the place to go for Mexican, Turkish and Norwegian food – as well as pizza. Fiskeriet Youngstorget (Youngstorget 2, city centre near Oslo Central Station) is a lunch restaurant, take away and shop with lots of fishy yet great fish dishes. In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular right now. The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs. GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu. Gudruns (Karl Johans gate 10) is a strange

GRÜNERLØKKA
Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular. GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40.) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11.) is equally popular, as is Blå (Brenneriveien 9.) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds.

Bar Boca (Thorvald Meyers gate 30.) with its tasteful ‘50s/’60s interior has professional bartenders and great drinks, and Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri (Trondheimsveien 2.) is an atmospheric basement micro-brewery with a large selection of beers.

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laid-back clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town. GETTING STARTED: Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard. Ivars kro (Grønland 14) is a pianobar with live music every night and a large bar with a good selection of drinks, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34) is a big and cozy bar/pub with a big fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage that includes popular open stage nights, while Pigalle's (Grønlandsleiret 15) new owners have ditched 80s kitsch for a cool and elegant Bauhaus / 1920s art deco style cocktail bar and interior complete with ferns, and even an art deco terrace with a little fountain. Skuret Bar og Scene (Christian Kroghs gate 2) is a scruffy but popular bar and stage that hosts many concerts, stand-up shows, quiz competitions, and more.
YOUNGSTORGET
In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places
with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. GETTING STARTED: Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3) covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4) is a bar/concert stage with dimmed lighting that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25) appeals to the electronic music crowd, with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco. Cafe Sør (Torggata 11) is another very popular place with nice drinks and great music, as well as the relatively low age limit of 20 (22 after midnight on weekends). Angst Bar (Torggata 11) is a bar in a passageway called Strøget which is hip, intimate, with great music and lots of art on the walls (also backyard parties during weekends).
BJØRVIKA & SØRENGA
Bjørvika and Sørenga, two newly developed seaside districts near the Opera House, are very scenically placed and have some quality places for grabbing a drink. GETTING STARTED: Vesper Bar (Dronning Eufemias gate 32) has made a name for

The big wine and cocktail lounge Vérité (Grundingen 1-3) has a high-end metropolitan feel that's still unusual in Norway as well as their own sommeliers (wine stewards) that can help you choose the perfect wine. Beer Palace (Holmens gate 3) is located in the oldest building at Aker Brygge, and their motto is that everyone likes beer, but not everyone has found a type they like yet.
The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight. GETTING STARTED: Enjoy sparkling wines and tapas at Champagneria (Frognerveien 2) or shake it on the dance floor at popular Skaugum (Solligata 2) bar and (at weekends) club. Trendy club VU (Hegdehaugsveien 24) has a courtyard, bar, lounge, dance floor and chambre séparée, while Mabou (Hegdehaugsveien 28) is cramped, intense and flirty. TICKETS Oslo’s local buses, trams, ferries and the metro share a ticket system. Single tickets can be purchased on busses, trams and ferries, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro tickets must be purchased before entering the train. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices at the metro stations, at Oslo Visitor Centre, in kiosks including Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Deli de Luca, and at Ruter’s Service Centre at Jernbanetorget (in front of Oslo Central Station). Remember to activate your ticket when you start your trip. TRAM Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre
METRO (T-BANE) Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).
BUS Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station.
