SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY Welcome to What’s On Oslo in June, when summer arrives and the living, in the immortal words of Ella Fitzgerald, is easy. Or at least, relatively easy! While July is the general holiday month of REALLY easy living, June is a kind of July test-run, with people flocking out of the office as early as possible to enjoy the sun and find a sweet spot in parks, by the sea, around lakes, on islands and in forested areas all around the Oslo area. Many also go on early holidays to get cheaper tickets - or because they just can’t wait any longer. June continues the trend that began in May with tons of cultural events all over town. This includes, by the information available to us in mid-May, at least 14 large and small festivals! And you can of course read about all of these in this, the June issue of What’s On Oslo. Summer is a time for exploration and adventure, so we are gifting you two articles that show you how to get a fright - and then how to find your inner calm.

The first of these articles introduces you to the zipline at the Holmenkollen ski jump tower, which you can zip down to get a taste of the life of those crazy ski jumpers you’ve seen on TV. The second article is a guide to some of the beautiful islands you can take a public ferry to in the Oslo fjord – with your buss pass. Then there is the interview with VisitOslo’s hospitality director and head of Oslo Visitor Centre, the woman who wants to make you love Oslo as much as she does. As always we include our indispensable guide to exhibitions and activities at the city’s many museums, as well as our equally indispensable Event Calendar with things to get up to all over town and whatever your preferences. And let’s not forget our practical guides to wining and dining, shopping and clubs and bars. Near the end of the magazine we have included maps and public transport information to help you find your way around town. What you have in your hands, in other words, is your ticket to a great June in Oslo! Enjoy! Team What’s On Oslo

WELCOME TO OSLO With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. Allow yourself the time to wander in the city’s streets, parks, forests or along the fjord, and get a feel for the capital’s abundant history in its character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city’s inhabitants and buildings and the people’s rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and in the vast forests. Oslo is a city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cultural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the World. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may be found at www.visitoslo.com, or at our tourist information centre by the City Hall, open every day all year round. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, promising an exciting and surprising experience. Welcome to Oslo!

Led by guitar ace Knut Schreiner (who later became Euroboy in the infamous Turbonegro), Kåre and The Cavemen burst into the mid-nineties post-grunge scene with something really different. It’s perfectly possible to visit or live in Oslo on a relatively low budget with a bit of planning! Here are some tips on how to spend wisely and still have a good time. Take a long walk along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva.

CHEAP ACTIVITIES: Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

The Oslo Pass gives you free entry to more than 30 museums and attractions, free travel on all public transport, free parking in municipal car parks, free entry to outdoor swimming pools, free walking tours, as well as discounts on sightseeing, ski simulator, Tusenfryd Amusement Park, concert tickets, climbing, ski and bike rental, and special offers in restaurants, shops, entertainment and leisure venues.

around Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees. Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).

FOOD & DRINK Supermarkets:

More information: visitoslo.com/en/ activities-and-attractions/oslo-pass

Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest supermarkets, and can be found around town. Meny is a more expensive supermarket with a larger selection of more fancy food. Various other supermarkets are also available.

FREE ACTIVITIES:

In addition there are numerous "fruit and vegetable" type of stores with cheap food (many are in the Grønland area).

The Vigeland Sculpture Park inside the beautiful Frogner Park near Majorstua boasts 212 impressive bronze and granite sculptures designed by Gustav Vigeland. You can walk on the roof of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, situated by – and literally sloping into – the sea near the central station, enjoying amazing views of the city, fjord and surrounding hills and islands. Take a long walk and enjoy waterfalls, parks, bridges, swimming spots, historical buildings, bars, cafes, museums and cultural centres along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva, which snakes its way down from the lake Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre. The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass). The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka, the most popular part of the forest

Eating Out: While restaurants can be quite expensive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too Examples are Tøyengata Bodega in Heimdalsgata 37, Café Sara in Hausmanns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51 and Nippon Sushi in Sørkedalsveien 5.

Beer: Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are large savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are Choice Pub in Grønland 5, Stargate in Grønland 2, Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52, Evergreen in Pilestredet 39 and Destiny café in Skippergata 26.

27

ACCOMODATION Hostels: Oslo Central is a hostel that opened summer 2013, has been voted the world’s second best hostel by Hostelling International, and is located in Kongens gate 7 in the city centre, close to both the central station and Karl Johans gate. Anker Hostel is centrally located at lower Grünerløkka, in Storgata 53. Further from town in greener and quieter surroundings you can stay at Oslo Youth Hostel Haraldsheim (city centre=4km), Oslo Hostel Rønningen YMCA (city centre=7.5km) and Oslo Youth Hostel Holtekilen (city centre=8km). Sentrum hostel is a pension house/ hostel in Tollbugata 8 in the city centre that includes a dormitory with affordable prices, while Perminalen Hotel is a

cheap backpacker hotel also in the city centre, in Øvre Slottsgate 2.

Alternative accommodation: Airbnb.com is a website where you can book a room in a private apartment, or book an entire apartment. Prices are generally cheaper than at hotels. To stay completely for free, try couchsurfing.com. Using this website you can stay for free literally on people’s couches, on a mattress or in a spare room.

CHEAP HAIRCUTS Getting a hair cut can be quite pricey in Oslo, but in the Grønland area there are a whole bunch of relatively cheap hairdressers, with men's cuts going for about 200 kroner. Do you know of any cheap women's hairdressers? Send us a tip!

Affordable Oslo? Oslo has fallen from first place in an international ranking – and for once that’s a good thing. We’re not the world’s most expensive city anymore! Oslo has fallen from first place to third place in an overview of costs in many of the world’s large cities. The report, released by the Economist Intelligence Unit every five years, puts Singapore at number one and Paris at number two. For instance, while Oslo was 50 percent more expensive than New York in 2009, in 2014 we were about 27 percent more expensive, Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten has pointed out in an article about the report. Costs for many visitors are probably even lower than third place, as for instance hotels are relatively cheap compared with a many cities. It might still be taking it a bit far to call Oslo cheap, but at least for once third place is better than first!

Treat yourself to a literally delicious tour of Norway’s culinary highlights in Oslo! Partner content: (Food Tour)

Norwegian cuisine is perhaps the most varied and distinctive in all of the Scandinavian countries. Now you can experience it on the popular Oslo Food Tours, a walk that takes you to many of the capital’s best places for food. On the Oslo Food Tour you will discover fresh food from lush mountain valleys, with their intense produce of northern meats and delicious breads and cheeses, bringing the taste of farm life straight to the table. These culinary treasures invoke memories of the Sunday nature hikes that are such a popular pastime here.

SUPER FRESH FISH Fresh fish from the surrounding coastlines are a tasty reminder of Norway’s proud seafaring and fishing culture. As you enjoy this seafood in a restaurant modelled on a traditional fishing hut, you can practically hear the sound of water and feel yourself transported to a remote fishing village. The tour starts at Olaf Ryes Plass, in the trendy and vibrant Grünerløkka, and from there we walk towards Aker Brygge, the wonderful seaside and heart of Oslo, and a popular meeting place for shopping, dinning and entertainment. Along the

way you will have enough taste sessions for a full meal, including beer from a local microbrewery in the center of Oslo, and chocolate from one of the best chocolateries in Scandinavia. While tasting your way through Oslo, you are treated to stories about the history of the city and the history of Norwegian food, and there are surprise tastings in some of the least visited areas.

NORWAY’S FIRST FOOD HALL The newly built Mathallen Oslo, Norway’s first full-fledged food hall, is a fascinating market full of the best of local food (and some not-so-local food). Here the legacy of good Norwegian food is lifted and brought together in a symphony of sights and smells that heighten the spirit. The tour of the food hall will have several stops and will include food from Norway's more distant regions. From an old fashioned farmers shop to more modern gourmet cheese, ending with a classic treat of brown cheese. This tour will also provide you with enough stories to fill the long summer evenings. Have a tasty day!

29

THE MUSEUM LIST Oslo has about 50 museums covering all kinds of topics, including intriguing stories from the past, classic and contemporary art, scientific and literary achievements, human rights, and much more. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to do those scary-looking ski jumps at places like Oslo’s famous Holmenkollen? Find out with Holmenkollen’s very own zipline!

Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

A zipline is basically a cable which you can attach yourself to so that you can slide from one end of the cable to the other. In the case of the Holmenkollen ski jump, the zipline ‘Kollensvevet’ goes from the very top of the jump tower down to the bottom, allowing you to follow the route of the ski jumpers. And as anyone who has watched ski jumping knows, that’s a scary looking route! But unlike the real ski jumpers, you don’t stand the risk of landing with a crash. In fact, people of all ages jump the Holmenkollen zipline. According to the official website, their oldest jumper to date was 93 and their youngest 3! The line itself is 361 meters / 1 185 feet and the difference in altitude is 107 meters / 351 feet. In other words, this is a strong contender for Oslo’s best view. Happy jumping! g

Dining IN THE SUN TEXT: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

In a city where the winter is long and cold, summer provides a welcome opportunity to enjoy your food and drink outside again without the aid of heat lamps and blankets! The outdoor beer is a cherished rite for many Norwegians, so cherished in fact that it has its own name – utepils (“outdoor pilsner”). As soon as the sun starts making its appearance in a steadily warming Oslo, lots of people look for the opportunity to have their delicious utepils, in a kind of modern day sun/summer ritual. There are many charming backy-

46

ards, patios and sidewalk seats to be enjoyed, and many of Oslo’s bars and eateries take pride in offering their guests elaborate outdoor spaces. This year there are more of these places to discover than ever before, and we present some of them right here.

GETTING STARTED:

GRÜNERLØKKA:

The charming square Olaf Ryes plass is framed by sidewalk seating during large parts of the year. Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / www.parkteatret. no) in the square and Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / www.fruhagen.no) just off the square are two of the most popular places here, but there are se-

veral more good options. BAR Vulkan (Maridalsveien 17 / www.barsocialeating.no) by the Akerselva river has a big roof terrace well worth a visit.

GRÜNERLØKKA/SAGENE: On the border between the boroughs of Grünerløkka and Sagene in the cozy park square Alexander Kiellands plass, Colonel Mustard (Darres gate 2 / www. colonelmustard.no) and Café Serenad (Darres gate 1) have ample outdoor seating blessed by some of the longest lasting afternoon sun in this part of town.

ST. HANSHAUGEN: The simple and relaxed outdoor ser-

ving spot St. Hanshaugen Parkservering (Ullevålsveien 28 / www.facebook. com/pages/StHanshaugen- Parkservering/279458078735371) can be found in green and pretty surroundings in the St. Hanshaugen Park, with nice views especially from the top of the hilly park. The park is the tallest spot in the traditional area of St. Hanshaugen, with the “haugen” in “St. Hanshaugen” meaning “hill”.

GRØNLAND: On the east side of town the square Teaterplassen is home to several places with open air tables, including Evita Espressobar Teaterplassen (Mandalsgate 10 / www.facebook.com/

There are other great outdoor seating areas in the Grønland area, such as the spacious and funky backyard at Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10 / www.dattera. no) and the charming cobblestone backyard at Asylet (Grønland 28 / www. asylet.no), a café and pub in an old house oozing history.

CITY CENTRE: On the lower part of the roof of the Norwegan National Opera and Ballet you can enjoy food and drinks in impressive surroundings right by the water at Sanguine Brasserie (Kirsten Flagstads plass 1 / www. brasseriesanguine.no). At the old market square Christiania Torv there are even more places to bask in the sun, including Café Skansen (Rådhusgata 32 / www.cafeskansen.no) and Kafe Celsi-

us (Rådhusgata 19 / www.kafecelsius. no), with hundreds of outdoor seats to choose between. The large roof terrace at Stratos (Youngstorget 2A / www. stratos.as/sommerapent) is also well worth a visit for great city centre views (only open Jun 20 – Aug 22). Q Lounge is another roof terrace bar with a great view and stylish design, situated on top of hotel Grims Grenka [Kongens gate 5 / http://www.firsthotels.com/Our-hotels/Hotels-in-Norway/Oslo/First-Hotel-GrimsGrenka/Restaurant--bar/ Restaurant-Example/ ]

FROGNER: Solli plass in western Oslo is a great place to enjoy an outdoor glass of champagne, for instance at Consenzo (Henrik Ibsens gate 90 / www. consenzo.no) or Nox (Henrik Ibsens gate 100 / www.clubnox.no), the latter of which has a roof terrace called Sollihagen. The tiny roof terrace at

nearby Champagneria (Frognerveien 2 / www.champagneria.com) is also a good bet (if you can find a free seat). Herregårdskroen (Frognerveien 67 / www.herregaardskroen.no) is in beautiful surroundings in the famous park Frognerparken, which also contains the even more famous Vigeland Sculpture Park.

AKER BRYGGE & TJUVHOLMEN: The stylish, impressive and modernized dock areas Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, right beside each other and hugely popular with tourists and locals alike, have many options for al fresco dining with beautiful views of the fjord. One of the very most popular at Aker Brygge during the summer months is Lekter’n (Stranden 2 / www. lektern.no) right at the water’s edge (and ON the water, in fact). At new and trendy Tjuvholmen the restaurant Bølgen & Moi Tjuvholmen (Tjuvholmen

allé 5 / www.bolgenogmoi.no) has an outdoor serving area facing west that basks in the sun almost until dusk, and the same goes for its neighbour BAR Tjuvholmen (Bryggegangen 6 / www. barsocialeating.no)

OSLO HILLS:

Elegant Ekebergrestauranten (Kongsveien 15 / www.ekebergrestauranten. com), perched on a cliff in the hills south east of town in the Ekeberg area, has a large outdoor terrace with amazing views of the city. In the hills north east of town at Grefsen, Grefsenkollen Restaurant (Grefsenkollveien 100 / www.grefsenkollen.no) offers another great outdoor view of town. Meanwhile, in the hills north west of the city in the Holmenkollen area, Frognerseteren Restaurant (Holmenkollveien 200 / www.frognerseteren.no) offers equally amazing views from yet another vantage point. g

INFO : Ferries leave from Vippetangen, and with a regular public transport ticket or the Oslo Pass you can easily hopp on or off between the islands of your choice. Go to www.ruter.no for updated schedules. If you read Norwegian, another great resource is Oslo Municipality’s free and handy guide to the islands. This can be downloaded as a PDF-file, or picked up in physical form at several places. www.oslo.kommune.no/natur-kultur-og-fritid/tur-og-friluftsliv/turkart-og-guider/

Did you know that you can jump on a public ferry in Oslo, sail for a few minutes, and find yourself on beautiful islands in the Oslo fjord blessed with sandy beaches and fantastic nature? Oslo is well known for being a capital close to nature. It is surrounded by forests and ocean, it is dotted with parks – and it has a big river running right through the middle.

Less obvious are the islands bordering the city in the Oslo fjord. Islands with beaches large and small, relaxing forests, steppes with rare plants, rocks jutting out into the ocean, and a charming collection of old buildings. Even better; you can actually use your public transportation ticket on the ferries! The boats go from Aker brygge in the city centre, and the shortest trip only takes about 10 minutes.

55

BEACHES AND CANNONS Why not take a day off from whatever you’re doing and explore the beaches, monastery ruins and canons at Hovedøya? You can relax on Langøyene’s long sandy beach (the longest on the islands), and if you really like it there you can even pitch your tent and stay. Or you can wander among the cozy little cottages on for instance Nakholmen, once the houses of the poorest of the poor and now the holiday homes of a lucky few.

the island you can visit the ruins of a Cistercian monastery from 1147. You can also see two cannon batteries from 1808 and two gunpowder depots from when the island belonged to the Norwegian army.

GRESSHOLMEN, HEGGHOLMEN AND RAMBERGØYA The three islands Gressholmen, Heggholmen and Rambergøya are connected. Gressholmen and

Hovedøya and Gressholmen also have cafes with food, while Langøyene has a kiosk. Note though that the opening times can be limited, so bring food along if you are planning to stay for a while.

HOVEDØYA This is the island closest to the city centre, with beautiful forests, beaches and cultural heritage. The best places for swimming are found on the west side of the island, where there are two beaches. In the middle of the island there is a big field for ball games and other activities. Hovedøya is also great for hiking. Parts of the island are a nature reserve, and flowers, trees, animals, etc. are protected. North on

Nancy Bundt - Visitnorway.com

Rambergøya offer great opportunities for swimming and sunbathing, and Heggholmen has one of the oldest lighthouses in the Oslo Fjord. The possibilities for swimming are especially good on the east side of Gressholmen and the south side of Rambergøya. Gressholmen Kro from 1930 serves food, drinks and snacks in the summer season. Rambergøya and the northern parts of Gressholmen are nature reserves, and the bay between the two islands is an important nesting area for sea birds.

LANGØYENE Langøyene has a big beach, a shop, a nudist beach (at the south tip), a beach volleyball court, a football ground and great hiking possibilities. Langøyene was originally two islands, but they are now connected. The area

that used to separate the islands is now a big field for ball games and other activities. Occasionally there are concerts and other events at Langøyene. NOTE: This is the only one of the islands closest to Oslo where you can camp (tents only).

NAKHOLMEN The island Nakholmen is located between Lindøya and the Bygdøy peninsula. Nakholmen is mainly a “cottage

island” - there are almost 200 private summer cottages on the small island. The southern parts of the island are a nature reserve.

BLEIKØYA

Bleikøya is a small island close to Hovedøya. Bleikøya is mainly an island of summer cottages, and a nature reserve covers the northern part of the island. Bleikøykalven, the northeastern “tip” of the island, is a nesting area for the Black-headed Gull, the European Herring Gull, the Common Eider and other seabirds.

LINDØYA Lindøya is an idyllic island with around 300 summer cottages in red, yellow and green. Southwest on Lindøya you find the best places for swimming, and

in the middle of the island there is a small shop and a football field. The monument you can see on a hill southeast on the island, is the Christiania Meridian from 1850. Southwest there is a swimming stadium from 1949, still in use today. Close to the east-side ferry pier you’ll find “Stamhuset”, which was an inn from around 1750. On the northern part of the island the original flora and fauna is preserved.

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the same building as Oslo Central Station. In Oslo Central Station itself, the oldest section of the building originally the station terminal dating to the 1850s – reopened in February 2015 after a little over a year of refurbishments with the name Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), an attractive new dining and shopping area, which also has a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre (the new tourist information office).

House of Oslo (Ruseløkkveien 26 / houseofoslo.no) is Norway’s first and only department store that specializes in high-end design, interior and lifestyle, and contains over 20 shops that sell everything from teaspoons to sofas. Upmarket stores with self-explanatory names include Gucci (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Hermés (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Louis Vuitton (Akersgata 20) and Mulberry (Akersgata 18). On and around Bogstadveien on the city’s west side there are also a number of high-end

stores, and nearby you’ll for instance find Kamikaze (Hegdehaugsveien 24 / kamikaze.no), with brands such as Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli.

SOUVENIRS

No visit to Oslo is complete without at least one souvenir! While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you. GETTING STARTED: At the new Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1), next to Oslo Central station, you will also find Oslo Gift Shop (ostbanehallen.no/ butikk/oslo-gift-shop), where you can buy classic souvenir items like trolls, lusekofte, wollen socks and much more. Meanwhile, two souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. These are Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm.no), which sells a lots of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. Oslo Sweater Shop in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel (Holbergs gate 30 / sweater.no) as well as in Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania (Biskop Gunnerus’ gate 3 / sweater. no) has the country’s largest selection of Norwegian sweaters as well as many other souvenirs. And once you’ve been to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, why not drop by the Vigeland Visitors’ Centre (Frognerveien 67) just inside the main gates of the park, where you can pick up even more souvenirs.

What can people get out of a visit to Oslo Visitor Centre? You get help so that when you go out the door, you don’t have to think about what we call “administrative tasks”, like booking a hotel, exchanging currency, or buying tickets for the things you want to see. When you leave us, we want you to simply enjoy Oslo and have a nice and memorable time. You can also get tips and help as to the kind of activities you can fill your Oslo visit with.

64

You know, Oslo Visitor Centre has more than 20 Oslo enthusiasts working here other than me; fantastic colleagues that are able to help our visitors in 13 different languages in total. They have lots and lots of knowledge about Oslo and love for this city, which they gladly pass on to those that visit us. In fact, I regularly get feedback from visitors recounting what a great experience they had talking with my employees. I want to give them credit as they do an insanely good job, serving literally thousands of visitors daily!

Who: Synne Myhre, Director of hospitality services at VisitOSLO and head of Oslo Visitor Centre, the official tourist information in Oslo. The Centre has more than 20 employees helping thousands of visitors every day during the summer.

What does your job involve? My main task is to ensure that visitors to Oslo and Oslo Visitor Centre get the help they need and that they have a fantastic stay in our city. More generally I am responsible for VisitOslo’s hospitality services; first and foremost ensuring that Oslo Visitor Centre’s premises, products, services and results are on the right track, that everything is working well for my employees in their daily work, and of course that our visitors have the best experience possible. How did you end up working with promoting Norway’s capital city? I have been interested in working with other people since I was younger, working in shops, restaurants and the like.

Where: Oslo Visitor Centre is located in Ø (Østbanehallen) by Oslo Central Station. From: Vinstra slightly north of Oslo, but has lived in Oslo for almost 20 years. Lives: Ullern, Oslo Interviewed: May 13th, by Tarjei Kidd Olsen

Just as I had finished my education degree in something completely unrelated, I was offered a job in the hospitality business, and since then I have been completely bitten by the hospitality bug!

65

Finally I was offered a job at VisitOSLO, and you know; getting others to appreciate Oslo as much as I do is a really exciting and fun task. As far as I’m concerned, there is no better job and no better product to sell than this beautiful city! Do you have any particularly good advice, then, when it comes to what to see or do in Oslo? Generally speaking, if you are interested in culture and museums, then the Oslo Pass is definitely the best option. Another thing that we have noticed is getting more and more popular among tourists is renting city bikes, as this allows you to get around and see the

66

city in a whole other way. If I was to say one place you have to visit, then one place I’m personally very fond of is The Vigeland Sculpture Park and the amazing statues and scenery there. A great alternative that is popular among Norwegians is to buy some shrimps, maybe a one-time grill and grill food at the supermarket, and have a little picnic - for instance in the park or on one of the islands in the Oslo fjord. Oslo is also a great city of music - we have more concerts per year than Stockholm and Copenhagen combined! Experiencing the city’s incredibly many musical and cultural offerings is a fantastic option, and you can buy tickets

here at Oslo Visitor Centre. And then of course we have lots of good cafes and restaurants. There are plenty of good things to eat and drink in this city of ours, in all price segments.

time in the best way? We are actually very focused on asking our own questions, too! Are they into art, shopping, great food, or want to go for a boat trip or maybe just walk around?

There is in other words something for everyone, so drop by us and we will find something that suits your wallet and wishes.

All people are different, so we try to map out what our visitors actually want to do by asking questions like that. The aim is to give the specific, tailored information they want, and not just general information which might not be useful for that one person in particular. We hope that when leaving Oslo, our tips and help have resulted in many great experiences and memories for our visitors. g

What are the most common questions you get at Oslo Visitor Centre? Many already have a very clear idea about what they want more information on, such as the Oslo Pass or information about specific museums. Many also ask more general questions, like: “We are going to be in Oslo today and tomorrow - how can we use our

Oslo’s nightlife is anything but boring. There are countless pubs, bars, clubs and concerts to choose from and the atmosphere is friendly and inviting.

CITY CENTRE & KARL JOHANS GATE

In the city centre you can move and shake to whatever is most popular at the moment. The area also boasts several jazz and blues clubs. GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45 / lasttrain.no), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3 / radissonblu.com/plazahotel-oslo/dining/skybar-34), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9 / jaegeroslo.no) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7 / izakayaoslo.com) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu.

no) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11 / parkteatret.no) is equally popular, as is Blå (Brenneriveien 9 / blaaoslo. no) – originally mainly a jazz club in an old riverside factory that also hosts lively DJ-nights and concerts of all kinds. BAR Vulkan (Maridalsveien 17 / www.barsocialeating.no) is a fancy bar known for its tasty cocktails and (in summer) large roof terrace, rockabilly-inspired Ryes (Thorvald Meyers gate 59 / facebook.com/RyesOslo) is a great place for a twirl on the dance floor, Bar Boca (Thorvald Meyers gate 30 / facebook.com/pages/ Bar-Boca/284273994971781?fref=ts) with its tasteful ‘50s/’60s interior has professional bartenders and great drinks, and Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri (Trondheimsveien 2 / schouskjelleren.no) is an atmospheric basement micro-brewery with a large selection of beers. Norway’s first food hall Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17

GRÜNERLØKKA

Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular. GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40 / fruhagen.

/ mathallenoslo.no) has a number of interesting bars, including Smelteverket (smelteverketoslo.no) with the city’s longest bar disk, great food and mini concerts.

GRØNLAND

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laidback clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town.

69

© BAR Tjuvholmen

GETTING STARTED: Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10 / dattera.no) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard. Ivars kro (Grønland 14 / ivarskro.no) is a pianobar with live music every night and a large bar with a good selection of drinks, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34 / oslomekaniskeverksted.no) is a big and cozy bar/pub with a big fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8 / cafeteatret.no) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage that includes popular open stage nights, and Pigalle (Grønlandsleiret 15 / olympen.no) features a mostly original ‘60s interior and music from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

crowd, with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32 / revolveroslo. no) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco. Cafe Sør (Torggata 11 / cafesor.no) is another very popular place with nice drinks and great music, as well as the relatively low age limit of 20 (22 after midnight on weekends). Angst Bar (Torggata 11 / facebook.com/pages/ ANGST-BAR/210106519005748) is a bar in a passageway called Strøget which is hip, intimate, with great music and lots of art on the walls (also backyard parties during weekends).

YOUNGSTORGET

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. GETTING STARTED: Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3 / kulturhusetioslo.no) covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4 / cafemono.no) is a dark and relaxed bar/pub/concert stage that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2 / internasjonalen.no), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25 / thevilla.no), Fisk & Vilt (Pløens gate 4 / fiskogvilt.no) and Turkish Delight (Torggata 35 / turkish. no) appeal to the electronic music

AKER BRYGGE & TJUVHOLMEN

Along the waterfront at Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen you will meet tourists, business people, everyday locals and the wealthy. This is a great place to go

for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean. GETTING STARTED: BAR Tjuvholmen (Bryggegangen 6 / barsocialeating. no) is a stylish and popular bar and restaurant on the waterfront in Oslo’s newest completed neighbourhood, and a great place for cocktails. Drink in style in Tjuvholmen’s only hotel bar at

Beer Palace (Holmens gate 3 / beerpalace.no) is located in the oldest building at Aker Brygge, and their motto is that everyone likes beer, but not everyone has found a type they like yet. And why not head over to Jacob Aall Brasserie & Bar Aker Brygge (Stranden 63 / jacobaall.no), where you can sip on some exotic drinks.

FROGNER & MAJORSTUA

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight. GETTING STARTED: Enjoy sparkling wines and tapas at Champagneria (Frognerveien 2 / champagneria.com), great cocktails at BAR Bygdøy Allé (Bygdøy allé 18 / barsocialeating.no), or shake it on the dance floor at popular Skaugum (Solligata 2 / palacegrill.no/ skaugum) bar and (at weekends) club. Trendy club VU (Hegdehaugsveien 24 /

no) is a two floor classic where young and old rub shoulders in rustic and spacious surroundings, while Oslo Mikrobryggeri (Bogstadveien 6 / omb. no) has its own brewery, and super tasty – you guessed it – beer.

FIND YOUR WAY AROUND Check out VisitOSLO’s phone app “Oslo – Official City App”, a travel guide which includes updated information about things to get up to, or check out their website at www.visitoslo. com. You can also read What’s On Oslo online at www.whatsonoslo.no. Other great places to find events are: www.osloby.no/oslopuls, tjenester.nettavisen.no/kundeweb/ dittoslo/kalender/ and www.underskog.no (which are all in Norwegian). TripAdvisor has a section on activities in Oslo in English. Of course, the best way to find out what’s going on is often to check out the venues’ own websites, or by asking fellow night owls.

t r A t ee r St s! Tour Embark on an exciting and unpredictable journey of discovery to Oslo’s cultural underworld and clandestine street art.

TEXT: Tarjei Kidd Olsen

As you might expect, Oslo Free Tour offers free tours of Oslo. Far from being typical tours of history and historical monuments however, here it is the vibrant cultural underworld of contemporary Oslo that invites your attention. - These are alternative tours where we take the public to the most colourful places we know of and to the coolest bars, and last, but also first and foremost, we look at all the places in the public arena where you find street art, Oslo Free Tour’s Brian Larosche tells What’s On Oslo. Larosche, a native of Luxembourg who has lived in Oslo for eight years, is one of two guides at Oslo Free Tour. - We provide an opportunity to reflect on the subject of street art, both for practitioners like myself and for spectators. We weave a story that looks at street art as something illegal, but nevertheless utilizing many art historical approaches that you’d maybe expect to find in a museum, Larosche says.

72

- A PARALLEL WORLD The first tours were organized three years ago. They are inspired by the early 20th century avant garde Dada art movement and its connection to anti-art, an almost deliberately fuzzy concept that sometimes rejects traditional

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

rules of art altogether and sometimes tries to subvert it.

What: Oslo Free Tour Languages: English, Norwegian, French, German, Polish, Spanish Where: Tours begin by the tiger statue by Oslo Central Station When: 13:00 on Sundays Website: www.facebook. com/OsloFreeTour

- The idea is that the institutional art world has become so distant from people’s everyday lives that we want our spectators to taste a parallel world, with art forms that are much more intimate with the people that exist in the city. Art on the metro, on schools, on walls – art that is free of charge, Larosche explains.

ART AS POLITICS This focus on boundless creativity is influenced by anti-arts’ development in a time of two brutal world wars, according to the guide.

- Anti-art as we know it today stems from reactions to everything going to hell in the Second World War. They had just witnessed the gruesome massacres of World War One and saw how rigid the Nazis were with their uniforms and conformist thoughts. The anti-artists wanted to counteract this with a free-flowing approach to the world that is skeptical to set roles, Larosche says. And indeed, Larosche hopes to wake an interest in political activism among the people that join the tours. For him, the tours have a political dimension related to issues such as non-conformism, anti-fascism and anti-corporatism.

- UNEXPECTED EVENTS - These tours are activities of a kind that I feel are popping up more and more often, where one offers a service that is a little outside of the normal. A field of interest that is like a gray area that you colour in, a magical experience where unexpected events and directions appear, says Larosche.

Photo: Oslo Free Tour

- Dadaistic anti-art is about having a relationship with art that is a little sillier, where you’re not so stuffy and where you can ridicule a bit and take away that sheen of holiness. That art should be so sacred is after all often an obstacle to daring to express yourself, he says.

- Sometimes we bump into one or another of the artists themselves, resulting in a much more intimate experience – and sometimes we even end up in people’s houses, according to the guide. While the tours are free of charge and the guides are volunteers, they do appreciate donations. - Yes, people can tip a little – a bit of beer money.

METRO (T-BANE) Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All the branch lines and the new ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).

BUS Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station. Many of the most popular bus routes are cross connections, including 20, which passes both the Munch Museum and the Vigeland Park.
