CLASH OF THE SEASONS! Welcome to What’s On Oslo in September, a lively month where summer meets autumn and the city’s many fantastic outdoor activities are complimented by a plethora of fun indoor activities. The cooling weather means that while the city’s great parks, beaches, and islands are still popular on good-weather-days, countless indoor offerings are also drawing the crowds. One brilliant indoor activity to get up to is museum hopping, and in this month’s issue you will as usual find an updated list of current activities at almost all museums in Oslo, as well as some great galleries with world class art. This is also a perfect time for shopping and exploring the city’s restaurants and nightlife. Take a look at our popular guides to these places to get started.
There are a huge amount of major events being arranged in September, both indoors and outdoors. Explore our expanded Highlights sections to read about music and movie festivals, a food festival, Norway’s first hip hop theatre festival, Oslo Culture Night, sporting events, magical riverside walks in torchlight, and more. And don’t forget to take a look at our indispensable September Event Calendar for even more cultural activities! Of course, slightly chillier weather is no hindrance to outdoor exploration and sightseeing, and in that spirit we present you with a major guide to Oslo’s bicycle world. Where can you rent a bicycle? Are there bicycle tours? Do you want to buy a used bike, an electric bike, or get your bike fixed? Maybe you want to learn how to fix your bike yourself for free? And what are some great places to explore on your bike? Read our bicycle feature to find out, before hopping on your bike and exploring Oslo on wheels. Enjoy! Team What’s On Oslo

WELCOME TO OSLO With its 1000 year old history, Oslo is the oldest of the Nordic capitals. The city, surrounded by islands and forested hills, is situated at the end of one of Norway’s most beautiful fjords. From the Viking age until today, people have looked to this place as a safe haven for trade, industry and cultural enrichment. Today, Oslo has a population of 600.000 inhabitants, and is the nation’s financial, political and cultural centre. Allow yourself the time to wander in the city’s streets, parks, forests or along the fjord, and get a feel for the capital’s abundant history in its character. Oslo is the capital of the changing seasons. The surrounding countryside makes its mark on the city’s inhabitants and buildings and the people’s rhythm and life-style changes with the weather. You will be able to discover a city which is full of life all year round, both in the narrow streets and in the vast forests. Oslo is a city of variation and contrast. Oslo is also Munch’s and Ibsen’s city. The art and cultural life reflect the fact that the inhabitants of Oslo come from all over the country and from all parts of the World. The city can offer unique sights and meaningful experiences, many of which are presented in this guide. Useful information may be found at www.visitoslo.com, or at our Oslo Visitor Centre inside Ø (part of the central station), open every day all year round. On behalf of Oslo we would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors, promising an exciting and surprising experience. Welcome to Oslo!

The exhibition also deals with the reactions of society, and the trial that took place the following year. A separate room is dedicated to the 77 people who lost their lives. The exhibition’s main texts are taken from the verdict handed down in Oslo Court on 24 August 2012. Most of the objects on display are part of the evidence collected during the police investigation. Illuminated Walk Along Alnaelva This is an annual event along a river called Alnaelva in Oslo’s eastern suburbs. Inspired by the huge success of the river walk by torchlight along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva (see elsewhere in this article), the Alnaelva-event has become a popular and atmospheric happening in its own right. Torches burn along the entire route, and you will be treated to offerings such as music, dance, art installations, food, and more.

Akerselva: River Walk By Torchlight Annual event in honour of the autumn equinox in Oslo - when night and day are the same length. A total of 4,000 torches light up Oslo’s urban river Akerselva from north to south, creating a mystical atmosphere around the cultural journey. Experience light sculptures, dance, music, art installations, and more as you wander along the river. The event starts at 8 pm and ends at 11 pm (10 pm north of Nydalen). You can start your walk wherever you want, but it is recommended that you walk south along the river towards town, for instance from Frysja or Nydalen. Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre. The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass). The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka, the most popular part of the forest around Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees. Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).
FOOD & DRINK Supermarkets:
Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest supermarkets, and can be found around town. Meny is a more expensive supermarket with a larger selection of more fancy food. Various other supermarkets are also available.
Eating Out:
While restaurants can be quite expensive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too. Examples are Tøyengata Bodega in Heimdalsgata 37, Café Sara in Hausmanns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51 and Nippon Sushi in Sørkedalsveien 5.
Beer: Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are large savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are Stargate in Grønland 2, Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52, Evergreen in Pilestredet 39 and Destiny café in Skippergata 26.
ACCOMODATION Hostels:

SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES
Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops and is located in the same building as Oslo Central Station. In Oslo Central Station itself, the oldest section of the building originally the station terminal dating to the 1850s – reopened in February 2015 after a little over a year of refurbishments with the name Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), an attractive new dining and shopping area, which also has a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre (the new tourist information office).
Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet. no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shopping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (akerbrygge.no), the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened in 2014 with lots of stores. Large shopping malls outside the city centre include Storo Storsenter (Vitaminveien 7-9 / storostorsenter.no), Sandvika Storsenter (Brodtkorpgate 7 / sandvikastorsenter.no), CC Vest (Lilleakerveien 16 / ccvest.no) and Fornebu S (Snarøyveien 55 / fornebo-s.no).

While souvenirs of course can be anything that reminds you of this place and your trip, around the city centre there are places that make it easy for you. GETTING STARTED: At the new Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1), next to Oslo Central station, you will also find Oslo Gift Shop (ostbanehallen.no/ butikk/oslo-gift-shop), where you can buy classic souvenir items like trolls, lusekofte, wollen socks and much more. Meanwhile, two souvenir shops can be found near Oslo City Hall. These are Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 9 / norwayshop.com), a big store that sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1 / thv-holm.no), which sells a lots of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway, and various souvenirs and gifts. Hey urbanite, drop that mountain bike!
You want people to stop using mountain bikes in the city. Why? In Oslo for a long time, people have been buying their bikes mostly from sport stores, and then not necessarily using the bikes in a sporty way but as a kind of city bike. We don't do that because mountain bikes have lots of complicated parts like suspension systems, disc brakes and derailleur gear systems which in our opinion are not really necessary, even in Oslo. If it’s a cheaper mountain bike, these parts are also likely to fail and become expensive over time to maintain. The ones you see in the city, generally speaking, people aren’t engaging with them and they’re just deteriorating. This makes them potentially unsafe as well as not so pretty. Fair enough. You run a bike store called Oslovelo. What does it offer? We’re a bicycle store and a workshop focusing on city cycling culture. We specialise in single speed, fixed gear

bikes and vintage racers, but we also build many bicycles with 3-8 gears, using internal hub gear systems which stand up to the weather more efficiently. Often we buy used, complete bikes on the web, break them down and customise everything around the frame based on what our customers want; handlebar, saddle, hand-built wheels etc. This is usually done with steel frames, because they last much longer. This approach to bicycles is something which has been growing, and which we encourage, because it brings about the opportunity for people to have a more unique bicycle, while being able to customise it over time. Not every customer wants to go through the process of choosing though, so we have our own brand of entry-level, ready built city bikes which we call OK bikes.
68
What are OK bikes? Well, first the name. The “O” stands for Ola and the “K” for Kari; two very stereotypical Norwegian names for guys and girls. The name is sort of tongue-in-cheek, and we wanted these bikes to be democratic, for everyone. This is reflected in the name, and in the price. The Ola bikes are for guys and the Kari bikes for girls, although it is of course OK to switch. OK bikes is a way for us to quickly influence the city and get those types of simple and elegant steel frame bikes out there. You can add-on things like a basket, rack, mudguards and kick stand. They are practical, customisable, everyday bikes with aesthetics in mind. Sometimes minimalist bikes can be a bit style over substance, and guys are maybe especially unlikely to fit mudguards, for example, because of how they

look. I was reluctant to use a basket for a while, but when products arrive that look good and work very well, that’s great! After talking with customers during the design process last year, we decided to make both bikes available with 3 gears, although Ola is also available as a Single Speed. Single Speed is just a matter of personal preference, and even if there are some advantages to the mechanical simplicity, it is something of a trend. I enjoy the challenge of the hills with one gear and you can of course adjust the gear ratio to make it lighter or heavier. And right there you have an opportunity for people to engage with the bicycle, change parts, to decide what is best for them. We’re trying to strike a balance between responding to the market, but at the same time influen-
cing it. We want to offer bikes that make sense. Aren’t bikes with one gear and no suspension a bit tiring in a city as with as many hills and cracked pavement as Oslo, though? I understand that a lot of Oslo is hilly and the surfaces aren’t always so smooth, but still the typical mountain bikes we see within the city often have more stuff than people need. Also, on the OK Bikes we include some familiar elements like thicker tyres, a comfortable riding position and, as I said, three gears if you want them. Often when we explain the reason behind these design choices, it makes sense for people. It makes sense that you don’t need lots of gears, most of which you don't actually use, that will need lots of attention. And a steel frame is much more comfortable to ride than an aluminium frame,

because it responds to the bumps and isn’t so stiff. If you’re going on a long bicycle trip around France, then of course you need a road bicycle. If you’re biking in the mountains then you need a mountain bike. But if you’re biking from home to work, or to visit a friend, then maybe you don’t need that – you need a city bike. What makes you like bicycles so much? First of all it’s just the fun of riding them. One of the first milestones that
70
everyone reaches when they are 3 or 4 is that thrill of riding a bicycle without stabilisers for the first time, and that doesn’t ever really go away. As I’ve grown up, studying product design, I’ve also become very interested in the materials side of things and the process of building a bicycle; the history of older parts, and the new ones arriving on the market. And from the point of view of having the store, the speed of influencing your environment is very satisfying. You can discuss what kind of bike the
customer wants on Friday, build it on Saturday and see the customer ride past on Monday. The fact that cycling is a responsible thing for people to do also feels good. I mean, we’re not selling cars. We’re trying to have a positive effect on the environment, as cheesy as that might sound. There’s also no question that biking is healthy and the easiest, quickest and certainly most fun way to get around Oslo. What’s your verdict when it comes to Oslo’s bicycle culture? It is getting better, and Oslo city council has a team working on the city, but there’s still room for improvement. I think that’s clear, and anyone who commutes regularly would probably agree. Today, bicycle lanes aren’t totally respected or understood by pedestrians, and the infrastructure is still lacking to quite an extent. In some of the newly developed parts of the city there has been great integration of cycling in the planning, but it’s not like that in many older areas. This is understandable these things take time.
To round off, what are your top destination tips for biking in Oslo? I really like the fjord swimming facility Sørenga bad, especially in summer. You can also go past Sørenga along the really scenic bicycle path by Mosseveien visiting islands Ormøya, Malmøya and Ulvøya – islands connected to the mainland by bridges. It’s also nice to cycle north up along the urban river Akerselva. There isn’t really a bicycle path there, but a pathway where slower cyclists and slower pedestrians mix nicely, and with many nice areas to explore. It might not be perfect yet, but cycling is still a great way to get from A to B in the city centre as well. And in-between those commuter routes there are lots of quiet backstreets where you can cycle and look around. Personally I like to do that around Grünerløkka, Dælenga and Rodeløkka, which have a lot of small streets and parks. That is, when we’re not too busy working on other people’s bikes! ■
It will get better and the culture will need to change as more bikes appear. To make that transition possible, many things need to happen simultaneously over the coming years. That’s something that’s happened relatively quickly in other cities. Portland in the US did it phenomenally quickly by spending lots of money in a smart way. That’s probably what will have to happen in Oslo too, because we don’t have the luxury of a city like Copenhagen, where the city was built with city cycling as part of the culture. Here, it’s retrofitting – building bikes into the city. Oslo at least has the advantage of seeing what other countries are doing better, but also what isn’t working in those places.

Single ticket (on board): NOK 50 Single ticket (in advance): NOK 30 24-hour ticket: NOK 90 7-day ticket: NOK 240 30-day ticket: NOK 680 (students: NOK 410) Children under age 4 travel for free. Children ages 4-15 and seniors ages 67+ pay half price. All tickets are valid for one hour.
TRAM Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre
METRO (T-BANE) Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).
BUS Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station. Many of the most popular bus routes are cross connections, including 20, which passes both the Munch Museum and the Vigeland Park.
