THINGS ARE HEATING UP! Welcome to What’s On Oslo in May, the month where Norwegians mark Constitution Day with a huge celebration, early summer says hello and the city starts to really come alive as it heats up.

Sometimes locals even like to look beyond the borders of their Tiger City. And when they want to look really far many go to Cosmopolite, Oslo’s premier stage for top quality world music concerts. We talked to Cosmopolite’s founder to find out what drives him and how it all started 24 years ago.

Unless climate change helps us out with some freak weather you won’t be seeing people sunbathing on the beaches of Oslo in May, but summer lovers will be seeing a sunny light at the end of the tunnel.

And that article might make you want to go to concerts! We have the solution to that too, with our regular Event Calendar where you also find club nights, theatre plays and other great events.

Furthermore May 17th is Norway’s Constitution Day, and Norwegians really know how to celebrate it regardless of weather! In this issue you will get a useful introduction to some of the many events, including a giant parade to the royal castle, which will keep you busy that day. Many locals actually celebrate their city year round by uttering the magic word “Tigerstaden”. “The Tiger City” is a common term here more or less meaning that we live in an exciting and ambitious city. What most don’t know though is that it used to have a far darker meaning… Find out more inside!

The summer palace of Oscarshall is located on the peninsula of Bygdø in Oslo. The palace was commissioned by King Oscar I and Queen Joséphine, and was completed in 1852. Today it stands as a monument to Norwegian art and applied art from the 19th century. The palace is considered to be one of the finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Norway and is one of the country’s most important embodiments of the National Romantic style so popular in Norway during the period. AKERSHUS CASTLE AND FORTRESS Spend a day at Akershus fortress and experience centuries of Norwegian history. Once an active fortress, the area is now a place for official representation, culture, learning and recreation. Within the fortress walls you will find two museums, a castle, beautiful views of the fjord and the city – and history from the Viking age to modern times.

Akershus castle was built as a fortified medieval castle around the year 1300. Since then the castle has been at the centre of events in Norwegian history. Today it is used for state representation and cultural events. A tour of the castle takes you through the Government representation rooms, The Castle Church, The Royal Mausoleum and The Dungeon.

The Visitor Centre is located in the ‘long red house’ from 1774 by the Carp pond. It is the natural starting point for a visit of the grounds. Our staff is up to date on the cultural events at the fortress and offer historical information on this unique monument of Norwegian history.

NORGES FORSVARSMUSEET HJEMMEFRONTMUSEUM The Armed Forces Museum Norway’s Resistance Museum

The museum aims at presenting a true picture of the events in domestic Norway during 5 years of German occupation during World War II. It gives the public an impression of what foreign rule may imply. Chronological exhibitions convey an historical perspective, from pre-war times to the liberation in May 1945. Several showcases, as well as varied audiovisual material animate the exhibitions. Symbolic effects, artistic details and authentic artefacts make the long and winding walk through narrow 17th century stone vaults a memorable and educational experience.

The museum covers Norwegian military history from the Viking era, through the numerous Nordic wars under Danish rule (ca. 1400-1814) to the Napoleonic wars, the union with Sweden 1814-1905, World War II campaign 1940 and War at Sea 19391945. The latest exhibitions cover the Cold war period 1945-1990, recent international operations and “The War Cross – Norway’s highest decoration”. The Munch Museum presents the exhibition Mapplethorpe+Munch that brings together Robert Mapplethorpe and Edvard Munch on a large scale for the very first time. Munch and Mapplethorpe reveal several similarities, such as their widespread use of traditional genres, primarily portraits and nudes. The exhibition includes a series of self-portraits from both artists, and Mapplethorpe’s known celebrity portraits of Patti Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger amongst others. This is an great opportunity to see a unique selection of images by of one of the 20th century's most influential photograph presented together with Norway's greatest artist.

We’ve managed to create a musical gathering place that works very well. Both the national and international acts maintain a high level. What does it take to keep a place like Cosmopolite going for 24 years?

PROFILE MILOUD GUIDERK Founded Norway’s number one world music venue Cosmopolite in Oslo in 1992. It is still going strong with more than 100 concerts per year and high quality bands and musicians from around the globe. In 2008 he became Norway’s first immigrant to receive a knighthood. He received it for his contributions to jazz, ‘ethnic music’, care for disabled people, and bridge-building between immigrants and Norwegians.

How is life as the boss of Cosmopolite? Now I enjoy it. Before I had to work extremely hard and be really engaged all the time. But it’s like steering a boat in waves: Once it stabilises things calm down.

You have to have a passion for it. You have to like the music and love working with it. If you don’t have those three things you can’t work with this regardless of how much money you make. You can’t put a price on passion. Why did you start Cosmpolite? Before I worked with mentally disabled people at the Emma Hjort treatment centre in Bærum for 15 years and was their culture consultant. I loved those people. The mentally disabled, they know how to enjoy things. I’ll have a quick coffee, but they savour the moment. I don’t have that ability. And so many strong personalities! It was one of the best times of my life. Then a government reform meant that patients were sent back to their home regions and into small living units. I thought it was terrible. Even if you’d been living at Emma Hjort for 20 years - if you were

from Tromsø, you had to go to Tromsø. Before I quit Emma Hjort I started a club in Bærum called Musikkflekken. Then there were good times in jazz in Bærum, with lots happening. After that I moved to Oslo and started Cosmopolite. And I’d very much like to honour a person that died. Without him I wouldn’t have started Cosmopolite. The one who founded Club 7 in Oslo, Attila Horvath. He really struggled hard. He didn’t get anything. I at least got a knighthood, but he got nothing and created the most existing Norwegian culture institution in recent Norwegian history. They had theatre, music, literature – everything. Even a gallery!

How did you end up in Norway to begin with and did you have a cultural background? I came here from Casablanca in 1970 with a Norwegian woman; the mother of my son. At first I did a lot of different small jobs, like cleaning. Then Emma Hjort as an assistant in one department, before becoming the culture consultant there. That’s when I started using myself. In Casablanca I was a pantomime artist. I made pantomime shows for children in the school yard. We were several people that got together in a pantomime collective. But my family wasn’t artistic. My school was the people around me that I met.

Why did you move to Oslo? Because I wanted to get closer to the market. Especially when you are running things on your own without support or anything, you have to safeguard yourself. Now we have some economic support, but we didn’t the first seven years. When we were thrown out of our first premises in Oslo because we couldn’t afford the rent, the local and national authorities thought that, “Ok, we should maybe give them a bit of money.” And we still get that. A club moved into those premises after us. They paid twice as much rent and invested 12 million kroner in developing the club – and only lasted two years. And that’s how the world works. As I said earlier: money can’t buy everything. Not to talk badly about others - that’s just how it is.

What are some of your best memories from 24 years of Cosmopolite? Screamin’ Jay Hawkins is one of the best artists I have ever heard. He’s a big personality in terms of music of the last century, at least rhythmic music, and was a composer, musician and singer. He’s big. Then there is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan, who is also dead now. Have you seen the movie Dead Man Walking? At the end of the movie it’s just Nusrat and Bruce [Springsteen - Journ.], singing. He’s very, very good. He’s the most exiting voice we’ve had in the last century. But I have many more! For instance Diana Krall, who performed at Cosmopolite in 1994. That was her first time performing in Norway and no one knew who she was.

And then later “boom!” and she became famous around the world.

applies not just to music but to many other fields as well.

Then you have that combination of stage music and the audience. When you manage to make a successful night and create chemistry where the audience and musicians connect and there is that magic moment – then you have done a god job.

In the 1960’s and 70’s there were lots of creators and different genres, and now a situation has developed where there are lots of projects where you make lots of money in a short time and then it’s all over and you disappear. And it’s not the musicians that make the money, but the producers that hype them up.

Take for instance Cristina Branco, who performed here just now. We had a full house and I was very proud because we managed to build a very good audience. The artist delivered her best and that immediate atmosphere and magic that was created, that is what I work towards. What are some of your most difficult memories from those 24 years? The most difficult is that it is heavy work. There are lots of bureaucratic things and little predictability. Working for diversity and quality isn’t easy because the world has become so commercial. Before you could discover all sorts of new and exciting music on the radio and go and buy it in a store. But now it all sounds the same. That

So this isn’t just a case of someone from an older generation not appreciating new things? No. Young people come to Cosmopolite, too! Music, quality and good things aren’t about age. Both the young and old can enjoy those things. People aren’t stupid. When you experience a good thing you notice the difference in quality regardless of whether you’re

three or ninety-three. And that’s why I’m very proud that our events draw people of all ages from young to old. Do you think Norwegians have become more interested in world music than earlier? I just think that the world has changed. When I first came here all you could get was salt and pepper, and now there are all sorts of spices. But unfortunately, some of the stuff coming here from abroad has become commercial. It’s not the same as before. But at the same time I don’t think that Norwegians took good enough care of their culture and developed it. Norwegian things can be developed, but a lot has been taken from abroad instead of creating our own things and exporting them. People from Iceland, which was founded by Norwegians - they are more creative than us maybe. What about audience numbers then and now at Cosmopolite? The audience numbers we have now are audience numbers we have grown ourselves. We build and try to grow and grow. And

So this isn’t about getting rich? No! Rich in experiences. There I think I’m one of the richest in the country, and I’m grateful for that. Because you don’t take the money, but the experiences, to your grave. What kind of artists are the most popular at Cosmopolite? It changes all the time. When I make a programme it’s as if I’m making an exciting bouquet with lots of variety, diversity and quality and serve it to the people. So it’s the quality that it’s all about, not where it’s from or what genre. When you get home today, Tarjei, look up the artist Terry Callier, who played at Cosmopolite. Look how he interprets things. A journalist from [Norwegian national newspaper] Aftenposten was ‘all there’ and just gaping, because it’s something that really hits you in the gut. Not something mechanical, no technique. It’s full of emotion. It’s about touching you inside. What are some exiting names that people can look forward to at Cosmopolite in May? I’m excited about Lisa Fischer, who has toured with The Rolling Stones for more than 25 years. Now she’s arriving here to play with a great band called Grand Baton. And we have a soul personality from the U.S., Betty LaVette, as well as a young and exiting jazz singer called Allan Harris who’s playing here for the first time and follows in the footsteps of Nat King Cole, but in a modern way. And also Bombino from the deserts of Niger. He’s an exciting guitarist that plays desert blues. Next year Cosmopolite celebrates its 25 year anniversary. Where will it be in another 25 years? My partner Anna Sienkiewicz and son Omar help out now. But we are going to build an institution that can continue by itself as a tradition. It will just continue and continue, regardless of individuals. And finally, our question to all our Oslo People interviewees: What are your Oslo tips?

at least when taking the population size of Oslo into account compared to for instance Paris or London, I’m satisfied. But we have to work for it. And the artists that draw more people want more money. But it’s going well – the books are just about balanced. When everything works we’re satisfied.

Two things. One is the lake Sognsvann. It’s very nice to walk around the lake for someone who is visiting. The other is the Munch Museum. I don’t like the new one they’re building and all that stuff, but the old one that’s still at Tøyen is great. u

DANGEROUS OSLO A proud bronze tiger stands in front of Oslo central station and even prouder locals say that they live in “The Tiger City”. But what most of them don’t know is that it used to mean that Oslo is dangerous and heartless! Text: Tarjei Kidd Olsen The Tiger City, or “Tigerstaden” in Norwegian. It sounds great, doesn’t it? A proud, brave and exiting city constantly storming ahead. Just like the mighty tiger! That is what Oslo’s citizens think of when they use this term to describe their city, as people here have done for a long time. They sometimes use it in daily speech among friends, as a way to indicate their satisfaction with the state of their chosen city. Other times they can greet a visitor from another part of the country with “Welcome to The Tiger City!” Admittedly some may add a slightly darker twist to the expression by saying it in an exaggerated way, subtly making fun of how pompous it sounds. But chances are that none of them will be aware of just how dark a meaning The Tiger City once had.

“THEY WANTED BLOOD” While Oslo today has one of the fastest growing populations among European capitals, it was also growing fast more than 100 years ago when The Tiger City description first appeared. Industrialisation brought more jobs and people to the city beginning in the 1840s, and towards the end of that century a major building boom took place to accommodate the ever increasing arrivals. Not everyone was happy though, and in fact the idea of Oslo as a city as brutal as a tiger appeared with the publication of a poem in 1870. In the poem “Sidste sang” (“Last Song”) a tiger battles a horse in a city. The human spectators all cheer on the tiger. ‘They all wanted [to see] blood’, the poem damningly says. But they

don’t get their wish as the horse keeps kicking the tiger to keep it away.

CITY VERSUS COUNTRYSIDE In the poem the author writes that he doesn’t know who ultimately won the fight between the tiger and horse. He writes that he identifies with “this countryside horse” with its “country-solid kick”, but that the larger battle has no end and that it takes place in the city “to clapping and cheering”. The tiger represents the dangerous and unfriendly city, while the horse represents the solid and safe countryside. A newspaper article in 1889 claimed that the author had meant not just any city, but specifically Oslo, “this cold city”. As if that isn’t bad enough, the person

who came up with the damning description was none other than Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Norway’s “national poet” and the author of our national anthem “Yes, We Love”!

TIGERS VERSUS LIONS And finally, did you know that the tiger at the central station has competition from a couple of lions? In front of parliament two stone lions guard the entrance. They were sculpted by two prisoners, at least one of which had been sentenced to death for murder. In return for making the lion sculptures the murderer was pardoned, proving that if this was a Lion City, you would be able to get away with murder in dangerous Oslo! Maybe The Tiger City isn’t so bad, after all? u

Oslo has a great selection of interesting shops. There are a wide variety of department stores, boutiques and shopping districts with hundreds of outlets, charming antique shops, flea markets, exclusive international brands and local handicrafts.

SHOPPING MALLS & DEPARTMENT STORES

Oslo’s shopping malls and department stores are spread all over town, but most are located in and around the city centre. Depending on where you go, you can get everything from electronics, reasonably priced clothes or a meal, to high end fashion items in upmarket surroundings. Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten. no), which has a further 70 shops. Ø (Jernbanetorget 1 / ostbanehallen.no), in the oldest part of Oslo Central Station, has an attractive new dining and shopping area, a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre. Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B/ egerkarljohan. no) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house with over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Magasin (Nedre Slottsgate 8 / steenogstrommagasin.no) is a department store near Stortinget with many well-known Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37 / paleet.no) reopened in 2014 as a refurbished, innovative and more upmarket shopping centre that is well worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (akerbrygge.no), the dock area near Nationaltheatret, large scale renovations have taken place and an attractive new shopping area opened in 2014 with lots of stores.

Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5 / blomqvist. no) is Norway’s largest auction house and specializes in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques. You might also want to take a look at Damm’s Antiquarian Books (Frederik Stangs gate 46 / damms.no), the oldest antiquarian book store in Scandinavia, as well as antiques shop Galleri Gimle Arts and Antiques (Gimleveien 21 / galleri-gimle.no). Basarhallene (Lille Grensen 3) houses several handicraft and antique shops.

Most vintage and secondhand stores are found in the Grünerløkka area, although there are some more gems spread around town.

There are plenty of places around town to satisfy your appetite for books and music. To get you started we’ll mention just a few of the more unique ones.

Fretex (fretex.no), Norway’s biggest chain of secondhand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF has two stores in Oslo: UFF Underground (Storgata 1/ uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-underground-butikk) where you can choose from thousands of pieces of trendy secondhand clothes from the ‘50s-‘70s, and UFF Jernbanetorget (Jernbanetorget 2 / www.uffnorge.org/second-hand/ uff-jernbanetorget) with a more

Bare Jazz (Grensen 8 / barejazz.no) is a great jazz-only specialty music store with a café and a place to hear good jazz music, sometimes live, while nearby Big Dipper (Møllergata 1 / bigdipper.no) has a large selection of vinyl. Eldorado Bookstore (Torggata 9A / eldo.no) is the largest independent bookstore in Scandinavia, with 4,000 square metres of books, culture and music, including Norway’s largest departments for children’s books, audio books and classical music, and a coffee shop, back yard restaurant and 

Tronsmo (Universitetsgata 12 / tronsmo.no) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like politics, feminism, gay & lesbian issues, movies and ficition, has a good selection of English-language literature, and a basement full of comic books. The Nobel Peace Center Gift Shop in the Nobel Peace Center (Brynjulf Bulls plass 1 / nobelpeacecenter.org) has books related to war, peace and development. The book shops of The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (Universitetsgata 13 / nasjonalmuseet.no) are well worth a visit. They sell books related to the fields of the four institutions tied to the museum: The National Gallery, The National Museum – Architecture, The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

DESIGN

Scandinavian design has enjoyed international appeal for decades, and anyone staying in Oslo has ample chances to enjoy, and buy, the fruits of these labours. Moods of Norway (moodsofnorway.com) on Oslo’s main street (Karl Johans gate 13), near Parliament (Akersgata 33), and in Homansbyen (Hegdehaugsveien 34), is a chain of stores and a hip Norwegian designer brand with funky clothes for every occasion – and the slogan “Happy Clothes for Happy People”. David-Andersen (david-andersen.no) stores have a great selection of gold, diamond, silver and enamel jewelry. Purenkel (Steenstrups gate 12 / www.purenkel.no) is a shop and gallery

Heimen husflid (Rosenkrantz’ gate 8 / heimen.no) is a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, blankets, arts and crafts and much more, and the shop Illums bolighus (Ruseløkkveien 26 / illumsbolighus.no) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.

FOOD & DELICACIES

You’re not alone if the words “Norwegian food” first and foremost conjures an image of Norwegian salmon, and perhaps of strange local specialties such as lutefisk (aged cod fish prepared with lye) and brown cheese. But there’s so much more, both local and international, that may tempt your palate. One of the hottest places on the Oslo food map is Mathallen (Maridalsveien 17 / mathallenoslo.no) – Norway’s very first food hall. In this red brick former factory building at Grünerløkka by the Akerselva river, you’ll find about 30 food shops and eateries offering a tasty and fascinating selection of food and delicacies from various regions of Norway and further afield. Oslo’s luxury and upmarket shopping opportunities have grown fast in recent years, and can be found in many parts of town, but especially on and near Karl Johans gate as well as on the city’s wealthy west side. Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. Kulturhuset (Youngstorget 3 / kulturhusetioslo.no) covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4 / cafemono.no) is a dark and relaxed bar/pub/concert stage that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2 / internasjonalen.no), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25 / thevilla.no), Fisk & Vilt (Pløens gate 4 / fiskogvilt.no) and Turkish Delight (Torggata 35 / turkish. no) appeal to the electronic music crowd,

with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. Bjørvika and Sørenga, two newly developed seaside districts near the Opera House, are very scenically placed and have some quality places for grabbing a drink. TICKETS Oslo’s local buses, trams, ferries and the metro share a ticket system. Single tickets can be purchased on busses, trams and ferries, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro tickets must be purchased before entering the train. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices at the metro stations, at Oslo Visitor Centre, in kiosks including Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Deli de Luca, and at Ruter’s Service Centre at Jernbanetorget (in front of Oslo Central Station). Remember to activate your ticket when you start your trip. TRAM Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre

METRO (T-BANE) Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).

BUS Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station.
