With the Christmas holidays over and a new year starting, January and February is the time when many newly rested and inspired people like to try new projects, learn new things and improve themselves.

Our Oslo Event Calendar gets you up to date on lots and lots of concerts, theatre shows, family events and festivals on a near daily basis in the whole of January and February.

ENNIO MORRICONE Ennio Morricone will be conducting his own music live in Telenor. The concert is part of the 90-year-old's worldwide tour, which marks his 60th anniversary as a professional composer and conductor, and includes a guest performance by the Portuguese Fado legend Dulce Pontes. The concert in Oslo will be the very first â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and very last â&#x20AC;&#x201C; opportunity to experience Morricone live in Norway. Ennio Morricone has written more than 500 works for film and TV, in addition to other works. Highlights include the music for Once Upon a Time in the West, A Fistful of Dollars, The Untouchables, The Mission and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Wedding singer, Diplo-protégé and the coolest man of the universe, according to Noisey/Vice. This year, the Syrian dancemusic-king Omar Souleyman has already sold out the biggest clubs in Copenhagen with his energetic synergy of Arabian Dabke and acid house, before travelling to Bergen to fill the legendary Garage. And now he is finally back in Oslo! Souleyman has gone from being the most popular entertainer in the Middle East to being a messiah for club-kids around the world and the improbable savior of dance music. He has worked with artists like Björk and Four Tet and is now publishing on Diplo's label, Mad Decent. The music is created and performed by a duo: Souleyman, his partner and a small KORG-keyboard. AMORPHIS / SOILWORK

Finnish melancholia-metalers Amorphis have had great success with their album Queen Of Time, which came out in May of this year. The band is still experimenting with strings, flutes, orchestral arrangements and choirs. Soilwork are working on the follow-up to 2015’s The Ride Majestic. These shows will mark the band’s first time supporting this new material. Soilwork’s melodic Gothenburg metal borrows its riff style from late 70s’/early 80s’ hard rock. STEINAR RAKNES STILLHOUSE Steinar Raknes is a world class Norwegian jazz bassist. He is also a singer, songwriter and composer, has recorded over 50 albums and has toured all over the world. Ghost took the world by storm in 2010 and has, four albums later, shown that it is possible to create heavy metal music with a wide appeal. JUILLIARD STRING QUARTET

Juilliard String Quartet is known as the quintessential American string quartet, and can safely be described as legends. The quartet was founded in 1946, and has won several Grammys. It is the first classical music ensemble to receive the prestigious award for lifelong achievements from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the USA. OUTDOOR: ALPINE SKIING & SNOWBOARDING Oslo Winter Park Tryvann is located only 30 minutes from the city centre. A powerful snow-making system helps keep the alpine slopes open from early December until Easter, even when it doesn’t snow much. There is also an international standard half-pipe for snowboarders, as well as a terrain park with moguls and jumps. Floodlighting allows skiing until 10 pm. The ski centre has 18 slopes and 11 lifts and a special area for children and beginners.

INDOOR: MUSEUMS Oslo has lots and lots of museums focusing on everything from Norway’s dramatic Viking history to famous painters. Take a look at our Museum List in this issue to get an updated overview of museum activities and exhibitions in January and February.

OUTDOOR: CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING “Oslomarka” is the local name of the forests around part of Oslo. Although most of the forest has some wonderful ski trails, its northern part, called “Nordmarka”, is the most popular. Nordmarka covers a whopping 430 square kilometres, and offers great opportunities for recreation and exploration year round. During the winter there are more than 450 km of prepared, red-marked ski trails, and some of them are illuminated in the evening. It is also possible to stay for a night or have a break and a snack at many cozy, staffed and unstaffed forest huts run by DNT Oslo og Omegn, Skiforeningen and Bymiljøetaten. The routes in Nordmarka are usually well-marked with signposts, but a map is recommended for longer distances. Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1) has a free simple map of the area, while the best maps can be bought at The Norwegian Touring and Mountain Association (DNT), Storgata 3, or at bookstores in Oslo.

Sunday skiing in the forest around Oslo

INDOOR: APRÈS-SKI Après-ski, usually called “afterski” in Norway, is the tradition of going for some more fun immediately after skiing or snowboarding. This usually takes the form of food, entertainment, drinks and partying at establishments near ski resorts, but with skiing and snowboarding possible just a few minutes ride from the city centre at places like Oslo Winter Park and the Oslo forests, entire Oslo is your après-ski! Only your imagination sets the limits for possible locations for some high jinks after hitting the hills and trails of Oslo. One example is eccentric Lorry (Parkveien 12), a bar and eatery filled with antiques, stuffed animals, a huge beer selection and a great mix of people of different ages. Beer Palace (Homens gate 3) is located in the oldest building at Aker Brygge and their motto is that everyone likes beer, but not everyone has found a type they like yet. Finally, Pigalle (Grønlandsleiret 15) is a modern art deco bar with a unique cocktail menu where you can stay classy while warming up after the hills.

OUTDOOR: ICE SKATING Don’t want to travel far? Ice skate in the middle of town! The Spikersuppa ice skating rink is located between the National Theatre and Parliament, and is open every day in winter. It’s outside and completely free to use, although you can rent ice skates for NOK 100 per day if you don’t have your own. The rink is closed during ice preparation from approx. 3 pm every day. No pucks or sticks allowed.

INDOOR: KARAOKE Why stay outside and freeze when you can stroll into the hipsterish karaoke bar Syng and yes, sing your heart out? Syng has two venues, at Arbeidersamfunnets plass 1 in the city centre and in Nedre gate 7 by the Akerselva river (also quite central). These are are no worn down, dingy venues from the 1980s, but fresh and funky places that make karaoke cool. The Syng by the Akerselva river also offers sing-along cinema screenings (“Syng-along-kino”) on Wednesdays, and rooms can be booked for children’s karaoke parties and big groups.

OUTDOOR: TOBOGGANING Take the metro to the top of the Korketrekker’n toboggan run (by Holmenkollen station), from where you can hurtle 2 kilometres downhill in about 8-10 minutes. When you reach the bottom of the run, you simply get on the metro again to reach the top! The toboggan run is located right next to the original bobsleigh run, built for the 1952 Olympic games. It is lit up in the evening, and don’t be surprised to find just as many grown-ups as kids there!

Bowling never gets old, and there are several great bowling halls around town. Oslo’s most centrally placed bowling hall is the imaginatively titled Oslo Bar & Bowling (Torggata 16) and has 12 bowling lanes, pool tables, a bar, pub and café. Solli Bowling (Henrik Ibsens gate 100) is in another part of the city centre, has 11 lanes and is on the floor below pizza restaurant Peppes pizza with the same entrance – making a pizza/ bowling combo night almost impossible to resist. Norway's biggest bowling hall, Lucky Bowl Veitvet, is near Veitvet metro station. It has no less than 26 lanes, a big restaurant that seats up to 100 people, and even a VIP room with private bowling lanes.

AKERSHUS SLOTT Akershus Castle

Akershus castle was built as a fortified medieval castle around the year 1300. Since then the castle has been at the centre of events in Norwegian history. THE VISITOR CENTRE AKERSHUS FORTRESS

VIGELAND-MUSEET The Vigeland Museum

In this beautiful museum situated next to the famous Vigeland Park you will find an almost complete collection of the works by Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). The story behind the Vigeland Park and how the sculptures were made is also well documented in the museum, which was built as studio and home for the artist in the 1920’s.

28.09.18–20.01.19 ANN IREN BUAN: AROUND US SURROUND US The works of Ann Iren Buan (b. 1984) borders between drawing and sculpture. For a long time she has been preoccupied with exploring the limitations and possibilities of paper as material. In her works, the distinctive character and properties of the paper are pushed towards the point of collapse. It is torn, glued and scrubbed until it almost disintegrates. The same occurs with the plaster. It cracks, crumbles and peels off. The works are ruins. At the same time, they are sensual and tactile in an almost insistent way.

HOLMENKOLLEN SKI MUSEUM AND SKI JUMP

At the top of Oslo you can visit Holmenkollen National arena, a site where many skihistorical moments have been created. In the heart of the arena trumps Holmenkollen Jump Tower and Ski Museum. The world’s oldest Ski Museum is shot into the mountain underneath the Ski Jump. Arakataka (Mariboes gate 7B) is an informal gourmet restaurant just around the corner from Rockefeller Music Hall. Baltazar Ristorante & Enoteca (Dronningens gate 27) is a charming and exclusive Italian restaurant in the courtyard behind Oslo Cathedral. Sagene Lunsjbar (Maridalsveien 153B) is a cozy and wellknown lunch bar with a good selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, burgers, dinners, deserts - and a fun children’s menu. Mat & Mer (Bergensgata 2) is a restaurant with tasty food at reasonable prices, and includes a delicatessen where you can buy things like bread, mustard and freshly ground coffee. Just by the Akerselva river there’s Hønse-Lovisas Hus (Sandakerveien 2), an old fashioned Norwegian café which serves great coffee, waffles, savoury pastries and quick lunches. They also have a shop where you can buy books, toys, handicrafts and other nice things. For maximum cosiness you have the tiny Caminito Café og Pizzeria

(Torshovgata 1), which serves delicious Argentinian-Italian fusion food (and some great pizzas!). Hvaskjer (Vogts gate 64) is a cultural house inside the Soria Moria building at Torshov that has a restaurant with a meat maturing cabinet, wood-fired grill and beer, wine and cocktail bars.

ST. HANSHAUGEN

Restaurant Schrøder (Waldemar Thranes gate 8) is a classic and quite relaxed pub and restaurant with traditional Norwegian food on the menu. Albertine Indisk Tandoori (Hallings gate 3) is a friendly restaurant with great Indian food at low prices. Smalhans (Ullevålsveien 43) is a local eatery that has received a lot of attention for its tasty fusion food and for encouraging customers to share the dishes they order with their friends at the table, reminiscent of the tapas approach. Café Tekehtopa (St Olavs plass 2) is a pearl of an eatery which has a wonderfully classic look, with creaky wooden floors, a chandelier, and tasty and solid traditional food from several countries. Pascal (Ullevålsveien 47) is a French neighbourhood bistro with simple and mouth-watering French meals.

GRÜNERLØKKA

Delicatessen (Søndre gate 8) is a casual tapas bar which serves a great selection of tapas, sandwiches and salads. Villa Paradiso (Olaf Ryes plass 8) is particularly well known for its authentic Italian pizza, made with imported Italian ingredients. Nighthawk Diner (Seilduksgata 15A) is a provider of tasty American-style food in an America-style diner, while you can get solid portions of mouth-watering Mexican food at Mucho Mas (Thorvald Meyersgate 36). Tijuana (Thorvald Meyers gate 61) is another Mexican restaurant with great food, but this time also with a great backyard and a big selection of tequila, rum and cocktails with authentic Mexican approaches. Markveien Mat & Vinhus (Torvbakkgata 12) is a very popular restaurant with solid, good food from different parts of the world and their own wine bar. Until 14:00 you can order the tasty Today’s Brunch at ever popular and cozy café/bar Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyersgate 40) and if you venture to the top of Grünerløkka you should check out Liebling (Øvrefoss 4), a sort of hipster café which has a shop with cool retro products. Handwerk Vulkan (Maridalsvn 15E) is both a bakery and café, the ideal place for a breakfast out.

GRØNLAND & GAMLEBYEN And if you can afford one of Norway’s most expensive restaurants, then Maaemo (Schweigaards gate 15 B) is the place to go for locally sourced, organic dishes prepared in truly unique and impressive ways - in 2012 this was the first Nordic restaurant ever to get two, instead of one, Michelin stars from the beginning. In the hills above east Oslo Ekebergrestauranten (Kongsveien 15) is the place to go if you want to eat gourmet food in a stylish 1920s functionalism building, while enjoying one of Oslo’s best views of the city and fjord. In Ekeberg you can also find Karlsborg Spiseforretning (Kongsveien 21), an oldfashioned restaurant where they serve up inspiring and unique blends of traditional Norwegian dishes.

Frognerseteren (Holmenkollveien 200) is a restaurant with traditional Norwegian food situated at the top of Holmenkollen, with panoramic views of Oslo and the Oslo Fjord. De Fem Stuer (Kongeveien 26) is a gourmet restaurant at Holmenkollen Park Hotel Rica offering international cuisine with a Norwegian slant and a great view. Holmenkollen Restaurant (Holmenkollveien 119) has great gourmet food, a special rustic atmosphere and a lovely location with another great view. Voksenåsen Restaurant (Ullveien 4) at the Voksenåsen Culture and Conference Hotel uses Norwegian ingredients to make dishes with a Nordic slant, and offers yet another great view.

Maaemo / Fursetgruppen

Lofoten Fish Restaurant (Stranden 75) is an elegant yet relaxed seafood restaurant on the edge of Aker Brygge, with an exquisite maritime menu. Beach Club (Bryggetorget 14) is a classic American diner that has become a legend on the social scene in Oslo after 20 years at Aker Brygge. And if you want to enjoy modern international á la carte, seasonal 3-5 dish menus and great wine and cocktails (not to mention their large

terrace with a fabulous view of the fjord), Bølgen & Moi Tjuvholmen (Tjuvholmen allé 5) is definitely worth a visit. Skur 33 (Akershusstranda 11), situated a short walk eastwards along the coast from Aker Brygge, is a unique restaurant in an old port warehouse which specialises in Italian seafood right by the sea. Festningen restaurant (Myntgata 9) is on top of nearby Akershus Fortress, offering amazing views of the fjord, rustic premises in a historic building, and fantastic Norwegian food with sometimes international touches.

Unique and cozy Lorry Restaurant (Parkveien 12) has been serving artists, writers, culture personalities and ordinary people since 1887. Lofotstua (Kirkeveien 40) serves Northern Norwegian seafood in very informal surroundings. Alex Sushi (Cort Adelers gate 2) is one of Oslo’s best sushi restaurants, with a cool, clean atmosphere. Villa Paradiso, already considered by many to have the city’s best pizza at its Grünerløkka restaurant, recently opened a second restaurant at Frogner (Sommerogata 17). Kolonihagen Frogner (Frognerveien 33) is based in a converted horse stall and as well as offering a very atmospheric setting, it serves lunch and light dishes throughout the day and a seasonal sample menu if you’re really hungry. Sawan (President Harbitz gate 4) is an elegant Asian restaurant with a tranquil atmosphere and delicious food.

Hut chain of take aways. Funky Fresh Foods (Hausmannsgate 16, city centre near Grünerløkka) is a trendy vegan and raw food café and restaurant in the DogA design centre. Kvadrat Salat (Prinsens gate 18, Kvadraturen area in city centre) is a popular salad bar with delicious vegetarian salads that you compose yourself from what they have on offer. Café Sara (Hausmanns gate 29, city centre near Grünerløkka) is the place to go for Mexican, Turkish and Norwegian food – as well as pizza. Fiskeriet Youngstorget (Youngstorget 2, city centre near Oslo Central Station) is a lunch restaurant, take away and shop with lots of fishy yet great fish dishes. L’oasis Mazze (Trondheimsveien 14, Sofienberg) has tasty Arabic food and pizza and carpets on the walls. GETTING STARTED: At Oslo’s oldest rock bar Last Train (Karl Johans gate 45), Norwegian and international bands perform on a regular basis. 34 Skybar (Sonja Henies plass 3), a bar on the 34th floor of Radisson Plaza Blu Hotel behind the Oslo City shopping centre, has large windows with an impressive panoramic view of the city and fjord. Jaeger (Grensen 9) is a popular club with electronic music and DJs most nights. Hip IZAKAYA (St. Olavs Gate 7) is a Japanese bar with authentic Japanese food and drinks, where enthusiastic bartenders wax lyrical about sake and shochu. Gudruns (Karl Johans gate 10) is a strange and cool place with two floors, a terrace and a slightly underground vibe that is popular with hipsters, electronic music fans and all sorts of other types in one glorious combination. And then there is Himkok (Storgata 27), a very special bar that makes amazing drinks and cocktails with alcohol from its very own in-house distillery and where one of its bartenders was voted Norway’s best bartender in an international competition in 2016.

GRÜNERLØKKA

Just northeast of the city centre is Grünerløkka, with active music venues that make concerts an important part of the borough’s nightlife. Many of the area’s popular cafés turn into hot spots in the evening, and this is one of the most popular areas for partygoers in general and hipsters in particular. GETTING STARTED: Fru Hagen (Thorvald Meyers gate 40) is a café in the daytime that turns into a hugely popular (and cramped) bar in the evenings. Around the corner, bar and concert stage Parkteatret (Olaf Ryes plass 11) is equally popular. Rockabilly-inspired Ryes (Thorvald Meyers gate 59) is a great place for a twirl on the dance floor, Bar Boca (Thorvald Meyers gate 30) with its tasteful ‘50s/’60s interior has professional bartenders and great drinks, and Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri (Trondheimsveien 2) is an atmospheric basement micro-brewery with a large

selection of beers. Blå (Brenneriveien 9), one of the most popular clubs in Oslo, hosts concerts and DJ-nights, a legendary in-house band every Sunday and has riverside outdoor seating. Beside it is Ingensteds (Brenneriveien 9), a bar with a big room for concerts and events, and beside that again is Bortenfor (Brenneriveien 7), a coctail bar with seats by the river and a slightly more relaxed environment than Blå. Downriver a couple of minutes is Syng (Nedre gate 7), a trendy karaoke bar with colourful seats by the river. BAR Vulkan (Vulkan 9) is a slightly upmarket bar known for its tasty cocktails and (in summer) large roof terrace, while beside it Norway’s first food hall Mathallen (Vulkan 5) has a number of interesting bars, including Smelteverket with the city’s longest bar disk, great food and mini concerts. Beside the park Alexander Kiellands plass at the very top of Grünerløkka, Colonel Mustard (Darres gate 2) is a popular and cozy bar which also serves hearty American-inspired dishes and allegedly is the bar with Norway’s biggest collection of board games.

GRØNLAND

Grønland on the east side of town offers a refreshing blend of friendly and laid-back clubs with varied music offerings, as well as slightly ragged bars with some of the cheapest beer in town. GETTING STARTED: Dattera til Hagen (Grønland 10) is a colourful bar and café with two floors and a big, charming backyard, while Oslo Mekaniske Verksted (Tøyenbekken 34) is a big and cozy bar/ pub with a big fireplace, board games, comfy sofas - and a theatre in the same building. Caféteatret (Hollendergata 8) is a multicultural bar, concert and theatre stage that includes popular open stage nights, while Pigalle’s (Grønlandsleiret 15) new owners have ditched 80s kitsch for a cool and elegant Bauhaus / 1920s art deco style cocktail bar and interior complete with ferns. If you like it super traditional and Oslo Mekaniske Verksted is too trendy for you despite the old factory interiors, then Asylet (Grønland 28) is a really old wooden house with a cozy cobble stone courtyard and a genuine traditional pub feel inside.

YOUNGSTORGET

In the Youngstorget area in the northern city centre, you’ll find a good selection of places with a more alternative/rock-oriented music profile, as well as a couple of clubs devoted to electronic music. GETTING STARTED: Kulturhuset (Youngs gate 6) covers a huge 800 square metres with several rooms and bars, concerts, a coffee bar and shuffle board. Café Mono (Pløens gate 4) is a bar/concert stage with dimmed lighting that plays a lot of rock, alternative rock and indie. Internasjonalen (Youngstorget 2A), in an Eastern European functional style, has classic cocktails, special brands of liqueur and beer, various music genres and an upstairs dance floor. The Villa (Møllergata 23-25) appeals to the electronic music crowd, with local and international DJs and genres such as house, techno and dub step. In the basement of the bar Revolver (Møllergata 32) young crowds dance the night away to 80s pop, rock and disco. Cafe Sør (Torggata 11) is another very popular place with nice drinks and great music, as well as the relatively low age limit of 20 (22 after midnight on weekends). Angst Bar (Torggata 11) is a bar in a passageway called Strøget which is hip, intimate, with great music and lots of art on the walls (also backyard parties during weekends). Andre Til Høyre (Youngsgate 19) is a cool 1920s style cocktail bar with vinyl records playing and an excellent second floor view of Youngstorget. Torggata Botaniske (Torggata 17b) is a green oasis inside in the middle of the city with lots of plants and excellent drinks, a great place to chill out in the jungle.

BJØRVIKA & SØRENGA

Bjørvika and Sørenga, two newly developed seaside districts near the Opera House, are very scenically placed and have some quality places for grabbing a drink. GETTING STARTED: Vesper Gastrobar (Dronning Eufemias gate 32) has made a name for itself with super tasty drinks and gourmet pub food. Bun’s Burger Bar (Sørengkaia 71) has almost 100 types of beer, live music on the first Friday of every month, and of course great burgers. You can also enjoy Italian food or just a few drinks at Cargo Restaurant & Bar (Sørengkaia 99).

AKER BRYGGE & TJUVHOLMEN

Along the waterfront at Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen you will meet tourists, business people, everyday locals and the wealthy. This is a great place to go for relatively upmarket food, pubbing and clubbing, and a summer drink at one of the slick waterfront bars with beautiful views of the ocean. GETTING STARTED: BAR Tjuvholmen (Bryggegangen 6) is a stylish and popular bar and restaurant on the waterfront in Oslo’s newest completed neighbourhood, and a great place for cocktails. Drink in style in Tjuvholmen’s only hotel bar at designer hotel The Thief (Landgangen 1). The big wine and cocktail lounge Vérité (Grundingen 1-3) has a high-end metropolitan feel that’s still unusual in Norway as well as their own sommeliers (wine stewards) that can help you choose the perfect wine. Beer Palace (Holmens gate 3) is located in the oldest building at Aker Brygge, and their motto is that everyone likes beer, but not everyone has found a type they like yet.

FROGNER & MAJORSTUA

The Frogner and Majorstua areas in western Oslo have a long standing as places for those who like upmarket partying. Drinks are pricier, the dress code stricter, and the see and be seen factor is higher. Guys in suits and girls in glittering dresses are not an uncommon sight. GETTING STARTED: Enjoy sparkling wines and tapas at Champagneria (Frognerveien 2) or shake it on the dance floor at popular Skaugum (Solligaten 2) bar and (at weekends) club. Trendy club VU (Hegdehaugsveien 24) has a courtyard, bar, lounge, dance floor and chambre séparée, while Mabou (Hegdehaugsveien 28) is cramped, intense and flirty. Monkey Bar Oslo (Henrik Ibsens gate 60A), Nox (Henrik Ibsens gate 100) and Soliis Bar & Lounge (Henrik Ibsens gate 90) are popular nightspots on and near Solli Plass. If you’re not planning to dress to impress, Lorry (Parkveien 12) is a two floor classic where young and old rub shoulders in cozy, eccentric and spacious surroundings, while Oslo Mikrobryggeri (Bogstadveien 6) has its own microbrewery, and super tasty – you guessed it – beer. 

SHOPPING MALLS

Oslo City (Stenersgata 1 / oslocity.no) near Oslo Central Station (“Oslo S”) is Norway’s most visited shopping centre, and contains more than 90 different shops, services and restaurants on five floors. From there you can cross a footbridge to Byporten Shopping (Jernbanetorget 6 / byporten.no), which has a further 70 shops. Ø (Jernbanetorget 1), in the oldest part of Oslo Central Station, has an attractive new dining and shopping area, a hotel and Oslo Visitor Centre. Paleet (Karl Johans gate 37) is a modern and Innovative shopping centre that is also worth a visit. At Aker Brygge (Bryggegata 9) there is a large and attractive seaside shopping area with lots of stores.

BOOKS & MUSIC

J.E.D.H

Bare Jazz (Grensen 8) is a great jazz-only specialty music store with a café and a place to hear good jazz music, sometimes

live, while nearby Big Dipper (Møllergata 1) has a large selection of vinyl. Eldorado Bookstore (Torggata 9A) is the largest independent bookstore in Scandinavia, with 4,000 square metres of books, culture and music, including Norway’s largest departments for children’s books, audio books and classical music, and a coffee shop, back yard restaurant and four stages. Tronsmo (Universitetsgata 12) is a specialist book shop focusing on subjects like politics, feminism, gay & lesbian issues, movies and ficition, has a good selection of English-language literature, and a basement full of comic books. Damm’s Antiquarian Books (Frederik Stangs gate 46) is the oldest antiquarian book store in Scandinavia and offers treasures from several centuries. Outland (Kirkegata 23, Storgata 26) is an authentic nerd haven, with tons of comic books and comic series, board games and gadgets from both cartoons and movies.

VINTAGE & SECOND-HAND

Fretex, Norway’s biggest chain of second-hand shops with four shops just in Oslo, is run by the Christian charity Salvation Army Norway. It’s a great place to find clothes at very cheap prices. UFF Second Hand (Prinsens gate 2) is a big vintage store with clothes, shoes and accessories from the last six decades. Fuglen (Universitetsgata 2) is a great retro-looking coffee shop and cocktail bar, but “everything” here is also for sale, from the retro chairs and tables to the plates. The vintage shop Frøken Dianas Salonger (Markveien 56) sells hand-picked, custom designed and mostly used clothes, and Robot (Korsgata 22A) focuses on imported vintage, retro and mod clothing, to mention just a few of the places in this hip area.

ART & ANTIQUES

The popular Vestkanttorvet Flea Market (Vestkanttorvet, Professor Dahls gate 46 B) is Oslo’s oldest market, and the place to go for bric-a-brac and antiques on Saturdays (March – December). Blomqvist kunsthandel (Tordenskiolds gate 5) is Norway’s largest auction house and specializes in local and international art, as well as Norwegian antiques. You might also want to take a look at, as well as antiques shop Galleri Gimle Arts and Antiques (Gimleveien 21). Basarhallene (Kirkeristen) houses several handicraft and antique shops.

DESIGN

David-Andersen stores have a great selection of gold, diamond, silver and enamel jewelry. Purenkel (Grünersgate 3) is a shop and gallery hybrid with stylish design and handicraft items as well as workshops. At Norway Designs (Stortingsgata 28) you’ll find great Norwegian, Nordic and European interior design articles, and at Pur Norsk (Industrigata 36) you can buy Norwegian design products such as furniture and personal items. Heimen husflid (Rosenkrantz’ gate 8) is a traditional handicraft shop with Norwegian sweaters and other knitwear, blankets, arts and crafts and much more, and the shop Illums bolighus (Stortorvet 9 and Haakon VIIs gate 10) is four whole floors of famous and new Danish, Scandinavian and international furniture design.

FOOD & DELICACIES

Fiskeriet (Youngstorget 2) is a great place to pick up freshly caught sea food such as fish and shellfish, fairtrade treats, local produce and special imports, and has a bistro with seasonal produce. And if you have a sweet tooth, Freia Chocolate Shop (Karl Johans gate 31) offers tasty, high quality Norwegian chocolate from Freia, Norway's traditional and biggest chocolate manufacturer.

LUXURY & HIGH-END

Eger (Karl Johans gate 23 B) is Norway’s largest high-end fashion house, and stocks over 300 international fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands, while Steen & Strøm Department Store (Nedre Slottsgate 8) is a department store with many well-known and attractive Norwegian, Scandinavian and international brands. House of Oslo (Ruseløkkveien 26) is Norway’s first and only department store that specializes in high-end design, interior and lifestyle, and contains over 20 shops that sell everything from teaspoons to sofas. Upmarket stores with self-explanatory names include Gucci (Nedre Slottsgate 8), Hermés (Nedre Slottsgate 15), Louis Vuitton (Nedre Slottsgate 13) and Mulberry (Akersgata 18). On and around Bogstadveien on the city’s west side there are also a number of high-end stores.

SOUVENIRS

By the Oslo Visitor Centre (Jernbanetorget 1) tourist information office next to Oslo Central station you will also find Oslo Gift Shop (Østbanehallen), where you can buy classic souvenir items like trolls, lusekofte, wollen socks and much more. Near Oslo City Hall Norway Shop (Fridtjof Nansens plass 2) sells Norwegian knitwear, gifts and souvenirs, and Holm – Souvenirs & Sweaters (Hieronymus Heyerdalsgate 1) sells lots of headwear for all occasions, as well as sweaters from Dale of Norway. Oslo Sweater Shop in SAS Scandinavia Hotel (Tullins gate 5) and in Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania (Biskop Gunnerus’ gate 3) has the country’s largest selection of Norwegian sweaters.

the most popular part of the forest around Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees. Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).

FOOD & DRINK SUPERMARKETS:

Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest supermarkets, and can be found around town. Meny is a more expensive supermarket with a larger selection of more fancy food. Various other supermarkets are also available.

EATING OUT:

You can walk on the roof of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, situated by – and literally sloping into – the sea near the central station, enjoying amazing views of the city, fjord and surrounding hills and islands.

While restaurants can be quite expensive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too.

Take a long walk and enjoy waterfalls, parks, bridges, swimming spots, historical buildings, bars, cafes, museums and cultural centres along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva, which snakes its way down from the lake Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre.

Examples are Tøyengata Bodega in Heimdalsgata 37, Café Sara in Hausmanns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51 and Nippon Sushi in Sørkedalsveien 5.

The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass). The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka,

BEER: Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are large savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are Stargate in Grønland 2, Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52 and Destiny café in Skippergata 26.

Oslo’s local buses, trams, ferries and the metro share a ticket system. Single tickets can be purchased on busses, trams and ferries, but are cheaper if you buy them in advance. On the metro tickets must be purchased before entering the train. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices at the metro stations, at Oslo Visitor Centre, in kiosks including Narvesen, 7-Eleven and Deli de Luca, and at Ruter’s Service Centre at Jernbanetorget (in front of Oslo Central Station). Remember to activate your ticket when you start your trip. TRAM

Oslo has six tram lines that run through the city from east to west. The route network primarily covers the inner city, but a couple of longer routes go out to the residential areas west, south and north of the city centre

METRO (T-BANE)

Oslo’s metro network is extensive, with six connected lines and frequent departures from early morning until late at night. All branch lines and the ring line come together in a major tunnel through the city centre, with stops at Nationaltheatret, Stortinget and Jernbanetorget (Oslo Central Station).

BUS

Buses supplement the metro and tram systems within the city boundaries. Oslo’s city buses have a two-digit route number, and the converging point for most bus routes is Jernbanetorget outside Oslo Central Station.
