SPRING IS IN THE AIR!

Welcome to What’s On Oslo in March and April – when springtime wakes Norwegians from their winter hibernation.

In truth though, Norwegians are not very good hibernators at all.

Although Norwegian bears like finding a cozy spot in the forest to sleep through the winter, many of Oslo’s citizens prefer strapping on skis to roam the forests at high speed. Or they could be on the lookout for one of the cafes, such as Ullevålseter or Frognerseteren, that appear between the trees.

Still, with spring comes the promise of warmer times and literally greener pastures. As the days stay bright longer, many locals feel energized and get a fresh spring (pun intended!) in their step. The new activity can also be seen in the increasing number of events that are organized, ensuring that your Oslo springtime will be anything but boring. An activity sure to get you acquainted with the city is museum hopping, and in this month’s Museum List you will find an updated list of exhibitions and activities at Oslo’s wonderful museums.

A great start is the Historical Museum, with exiting attractions such as the Viking exhibition VÍKINGR, and the National Museum that re-opened in a brand-new building in summer 2022, with a huge number of exhibitions including Norwegian and international artists.

Another hot tip is the museum peninsula Bygdøy, with four great museums you can read about in the Museum List: Norsk folkemuseum (Norway’s cultural history museum), Fram – The Polar Exploration Museum, The Kon-Tiki Museum, The Maritime Museum and The Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies (HL-senteret).

And then there is our guide to Things To Do In Oslo on pages 08-11, with 13 essential Oslo sights and activities to keep you on your toes!

How to find your way to all these places? In the back of the magazine, you will find practical maps to Oslo’s museums and the entire city centre.

Have a wonderful time in Oslo! Team What’s On Oslo

FREE ACTIVITIES

The Vigeland Sculpture Park inside the beautiful Frogner Park near Majorstua boasts 212 impressive bronze and granite sculptures designed by Gustav Vigeland. You can walk on the roof of the Norwegian Opera and Ballet, situated by – and literally sloping into – the sea near the central station, enjoying amazing views of the city, fjord and surrounding hills and islands.

Take a long walk and enjoy waterfalls, parks, bridges, swimming spots, historical buildings, bars, cafes, museums and cultural centres along Oslo’s urban river Akerselva, which snakes its way down from the lake Mariadalsvannet by the forest edge to Grønland in the city centre. The Holmenkollen Ski Jump at Holmenkollen in the hills above Oslo is one of the capital’s most famous landmarks, hosts many winter sporting activities, and the area has great views. There is a ski museum inside the ski jump and an observation deck on top (free with Oslo Pass).

The Holmenkollen area (especially from Frognerseteren and Tryvann) is also a great starting point for trips into Nordmarka, the most popular part of the forest around

It’s perfectly possible to visit or live in Oslo on a relatively low budget with a bit of planning! Here are some tips on how to spend wisely and still have a good time.

Oslo - with endless possibilities for walks, trekking, biking, skiing and swimming, and with cozy cafes hidden among the trees. Another good starting point for trips into Nordmarka is the forest lake Sognsvann. Both Sognsvann and Holmenkollen are accessible by metro (free with Oslo Pass).

FOOD & DRINK

SUPERMARKETS:

Rema 1000, Kiwi, Rimi and Bunnpris are among the cheapest supermarkets, and can be found around town. Meny and Coop Mega are generally a bit more expensive, but have a larger selection.

EATING OUT:

While restaurants can be quite expensive, a good tip is to check out cheaper eateries for instance at Grønland, Grünerløkka and Sofienberg on the east side of town - although there are cheap places on the west side too.

Examples are the Backstube chain of self service bakeries around town, Café Sara in Hausmanns gate 29, Fiskeriet Youngstorget at Youngstorget 2, Viet Nam House in Bernt Ankers gate 6B, L’oasis Mazze in Trondheimsveien 14A, as well as Tasty Thai in Thereses gate 51, Punjab Tandoori in Grønland 24 and Gazakjøkken in Møllergata 10.

BEER:

Norway’s high alcohol prices are no big secret, but there are savings to be had on beer if you know where to go. As with food, many of the cheap places are on Oslo’s east side. Among the very cheapest places are Rett Inn Bar in Storgata 39, Samfunnet Bislet in Pilestredet 52, the Los Tacos chain and Luna Park bar in Akersgata 47.

THINGS TO DO IN OSLO

Photo: Mad Goats Photo: Juan Carlos Alonso/ Adobe Stock

There are incredibly many things to see and do in Oslo. Here are 13 activities that will keep you on your toes!

FROGNERPARKEN. Oslo’s most majestic park includes a river, Museum of Oslo, and the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park with more than 200 sculptures.

EKEBERG SCULPTURE PARK. Wander among sculptures by many of the world’s most famous sculptors in the forested hills above eastern Oslo, and visit elegant Ekebergestauranten with great city views.

AKERSELVA. Discover waterfalls, parks, forest patches, old factory buildings and riverside cafes and bars on the 9.8 kilometre trek up or down along Oslo’s urban river.

THE FJORD PROMENADE. For nine kilometres along Oslo's waterfront the fjord promenade boasts fjord saunas, food, nightlife, the Opera House, MUNCH, Akershus Fortress, City Hall, Astrup Fearnley and the beautiful Oslo fjord.

BYGDØY. This peaceful peninsula immediately west of central Oslo has beautiful coastal areas and forest, as well as Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, Fram Museum, Kon-Tiki Museum, Norwegian Maritime Museum, Holocaust Center, and Oscarshall.

OSLO’S MUSEUMS. Oslo has many amazing museums. See The Museum List in this issue to find an exhibition or event!

FJORD ISLANDS. Use your public transport ticket to catch a cheap ferry out to one of the local beach and nature islands Hovedøya and Gressholmen, as well as the pretty cabin islands Lindøya, Bleikøya and Nakholmen.

SKY BARS. Enjoy Oslo from up high and with a drink at Summit Bar in Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel (Holbergs gate 30), 34th Restaurant & Bar in Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel (Sonja Henies pl. 3), and Kranen in the Munch Museum (Edvard Munchs pl. 1).

FROGNERSETEREN. Rustic restaurant built in the dragestil (“Dragon Style”) National Romantic architectural style in the 1890s. Magnificent views of Oslo and the fjord from the forested hills above the capital.

SOGNSVANN. Just three minutes’ walk from the Sognsvann metro station, this pretty lake by the edge of Oslo’s deep forests is a great place for a stroll in easily accessible nature.

ROSE CASTLE. Magnificent outdoor art installation in Holmenkollen, in the forest high above Oslo. Almost 300 artworks symbolize five years of Nazi occupation during WWII, how society fights back, and how to bring the values of freedom into future generations.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING. Oslos has 100s of kilometres of prepared ski tracks in the forest in winter. The most popular starting point is by the Sognsvann lake, but there are many possible starting points.

DOWNHILL SKIING AND SNOWBOARD. Skimore Oslo is largest ski resort in the Oslo area, with 18 slopes - and you can take the city metro to get there! It's possible to rent skis and snowboards from Skimore Oslo.

HOLMENKOLLEN SKI SIMULATOR

New Ski Simulator in Holmenkollen. It is a Movie-Ride Theatre. Experience Downhill Skiing at 130 km/ hour – and Ski-jumping at 100 km/hour. Ski Simulator next to the Holmenkollen ski jump! Jump in “Kollen” and find out what it feels like to head down the world’s toughest downhill ski slopes alongside the world’s best performers on two skis. Technology which used to be available only to pilots and astronauts combines flight simulator movements with an “eye-view” movie to create a unique and realistic feel.

Once inside the the Ski Simulator you will get the “ride of your life”, when the skiing starts. Up to 12 people can sit inside at the same time and the whole ride lasts about 5 minutes. “Amazing ride, amazing experience. It made me realize how crazy you have to be to go skiing at 130 km/h and how dangerous it is”.
