WHAT’S ON!

FALL APPROACHES

Fall is already approaching, and there’s still much to do! First things first, make sure you’re prepared!

imagination to design a playroom your children will remember forever? Create a space that reflects their interests, personalities, hobbies and preferences. Keep in mind that today's kids are tomorrow's teens. They will replace toys with watching television, playing electronic games or listening to music with friends. These same teens will turn into young adults who may wish to challenge mom and dad to a game of pool or table tennis. Design your playroom to transition through the different stages of life, ensuring your little ones—no matter how old or big they may be—always have a space to “play.”

Check your stock of RONA composting Try these fun ideas: bags, rakes, and even a leaf blower to help you ease into the new season. è Chalkboard accent wall Another helpful tip: keep your Summer gear safe! Consider the possibility of a plastic storage shed to keep everything safe and ready to go for next year. Much more economical than finding a mess of ruined things next June. Be smart with your storage.

è Storage shelving cubes (at kid-height!) è Puzzle flooring è Bulletin board to post art projects è A tent!

PROJECT PLAN: DESIGN A NEW PLAYROOM!

è Bright and bold coloured walls!

We are not sure how school will look for kids this fall, but with the colder weather and the possibility of spending more time indoors, why not design a new space designated just for the kids.

Let your imagination run wild and create the playroom your kids will enjoy for years to come!

Our summer looked a little different this year with COVID-19 cancelling many Mission traditions. We didn’t see the Twilight Concerts, Festivals at Heritage Park and Mission Fest in Downtown Mission. Despite disappoint, this pandemic drew on our greatest strengths. It did not hinder our community spirit. Families went on staycations, exploring our own backyard to support local businesses and the tourism industry. Event organizers such as the Mission Folk Music Festival & Fraser Valley Youth Society adapted their events so that we were still able to access music, arts and culture while staying safe. Nonprofits reconfigured their events to be physically distanced so that they could still raise funds to help our community. The Mission Community Archives, in partnership with the Mission Museum, continues to work on its COVID-19 Documentation Project. Aptly, titled “Life at TWO Metres: Mission, BC” - the New Normal - project’s purpose is to collect a compilation of personal accounts, photographs, audiovisual materials, printed materials, oral histories and 3 dimensional objects from local residents documenting how the pandemic has impacted life in Mission. The Mission Archives and Museum are wonderful resources in our community, recording our history so it can be appreciated by generations to come. They are both branches of the Mission District Historical Society, a charitable non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses. If you are interested in volunteering time or donating funds to help share the story of our community, visit www.missiondhs.com Be sure to check out our September and October events even if they may be different in format - Culture Days, Mission Arts Council’s Haunted Attraction, Zoom Music Bingo, Hike for Hospice, Celebration of the Arts Awards. Watch the livestream events, donate to the causes and purchase the “merch” to support the artists if you can. These organizations and Mission small businesses still need our help. Local small businesses make our communities run by supporting community events and sponsoring sports teams. Shop, eat and play local whenever possible.

This month, when I was selecting my book to review, I was looking for a special book. A book, that, after reading, left me changed. A book that meant something… that affirmed our humanity, in all its uniqueness. That’s what I was looking for, and that’s what I found. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, by Kim Edwards, begins on a cold winter night in 1967. Dr. David Henry and his wife Norah are expecting their first child. When Norah goes into labour during a snow storm, and the on-call doctor can’t make it in time, David finds himself in the position of delivering his own child. As his wife is put under during the worst parts of her labour, the doctor delivers his son. Moments later, a surprise… twins. As he examines the second child, a daughter, he sees in her face the features of a child with Downs Syndrome. With his wife still under the effects of the gas, and unknowing of the fact that she has delivered two babies, David makes a decision. He asks his nurse Caroline to take his infant daughter to an institution. His wife will never know. “Don’t you see?” he asked, his voice soft. “This poor child will most likely have a serious heart defect. A fatal one. I’m trying to spare us all a terrible grief.”

WHAT’S ON!

Ami’s

Review Caroline takes the child, but instead of bringing her to an institution as requested, Caroline disappears into another city to raise the baby as her own. From 1967 through 1988, this story follows the parallel lives of David, his wife Norah and their son Paul, as well as Caroline and her daughter, Phoebe. With beautiful writing rich with human emotion, we’re shown the devastating effects a secret can have on a marriage, and on one man’s life, while following the joy and struggle that comes with taking care of, and advocating for, a child in a time when Downs Syndrome was a shameful diagnosis. It’s about forgiving others, forgiving yourself, and finding your way into a new understanding. It’s about the unforgettable love parents have for their children, and how out-of-sight is never out-of-mind. In the process, it will shock you, make you angry, make you cry, make you laugh for joy, and above all, it will highlight with amazing clarity how every child is precious, beautiful, and valuable, worthy and deserving of all the love we have to give. It is a beautiful story, and I hope you’ll come in to Totally Book-ish and pick up your copy today. Ami’s Rating 4.5 stars

BIKE TO WORK & SCHOOL WEEK Sept 28th to Oct 4th is Bike to Work Week in 2020. This is an event that normally runs in the Spring but was postponed like so many things due to COVID-19. However, as we have come to learn more about what steps need to be taken to ensure our collective safety, one thing has become clear - it is safe to ride your bike! BTWW is a great reason to give riding to work a try. You don’t need to do it the entire week (although good on ya if ya did!) - just try one or two days to take your bike instead of the car. You can also combine transit if your commute is longer than you’re comfortable pedalling. The WestCoast Express has bike parking on-board so you can ride to the station, train near your destination and then ride the rest of the way. The hills in Mission can be another challenge but there are ways to deal with that too! You can take a bus for a particularly strenuous part of the

What’s On!info@missionridesbikes.org • www.WhatsOnMission.ca

climb. Most buses are fitted with bike racks now. You can also get an e-bike. They give you electric support to flatten the hills (as we flatten the curve!). And finally, if you want to tackle the hills, check out Mission Community Cycling Coalition (M3C) at www.missionridesbikes.org with some suggested routes that help manage the hills a little easier than straight up Cedar St.!

And for the student in your house - Sept 28th to Oct 2nd is Bike to School Week. Same week, same story. Try riding your bike to school instead of getting a ride or driving. We’re working with the School District to improve cycling amenities. So if there isn’t a place to lock your bike at school - let your principal know! We at M3C are here to help with rack designs and suppliers to get more places for more bicycles. Stay safe and keep pedaling. Mission Community Cycling Coalition (M3C)

ZOOM MUSIC BINGO FUNDRAISERS with Cory Cassel Productions

Cory Cassel Productions is all about building community through events, and with the current restrictions for hosting live events, we have found ourselves searching for ways that we could continue to bring people together and support nonprofit organizations whose work is vital to our communities. Music Bingo has been a crowd favourite in our local pubs for years and now we can enjoy playing online. Zoom Music Bingo started in April after the pandemic shut down pubs and restaurants and people began looking for ways to have fun at home. I was having a lot of fun playing Zoom Music Bingo from our home in Japan, so I connected with Sean Constable, the owner of Music Bingo Worldwide, and asked if there might be an opportunity to host fundraisers on Zoom for nonprofits in Mission. Our first 2 events in support of the Mission Firefighters’ Charitable Society were successful and we raised $2800 to support their work in our community. We have also hosted Zoom Music Bingo Fundraisers for Mission Literacy in Motion, the Kidney March and the Fraser Valley Youth Society, with thousands of dollars raised to support the work of those organizations. Zoom Music Bingo is a fantastic opportunity to raise money, have fun and stay safe in the comfort of our homes while connecting with others. If you think a Zoom Music Bingo Fundraiser might be an opportunity for your organization to raise money, or if you are a business owner looking for a great way to promote your business online, please contact me at corycassel@yahoo.com or at Cory Cassel Productions on Facebook. I will be happy to give you information about how our events work and the support we offer to ensure your fundraiser is successful. You can also find out about other Music Bingo events online and also live in some of our favourite pubs at www.musicbingo.com. Covid-19 hit Mission Firefighters’ Charitable Society hard. We were forced to cancel all our fundraising events. Cory suggested we try a Zoom Music Bingo fundraiser. Our first event was so well received we quickly planned a second and will be doing more.- Mike Todd, Mission Firefighters’ Charitable Society.

WHAT’S ON!

Mission All Together for Healthcare is Calling on Community Mission All Together for Healthcare (MATH) is a new organization committed to connecting the community to support the provisions of the healthcare services in the District of Mission. As the name implies it is a way to add everyone’s efforts together to multiply our impact so we can subtract access problems to services and divide responsibilities amongst our community. Community engagement has emerged as an increasingly effective strategy for harnessing health potential. We invite all residents of the District of Mission to collaborate and contribute as a community to eliminate health disparities and inequalities. As we learn to navigate the pandemic world, we believe this is a powerful opportunity for all community members to get involved, share ideas, concerns, innovative approaches, mutual support as well as target fundraising to local needs. Goals of our organization include: • Facilitating community input to the health system. • Working with Fraser Health, the Ministry of Health, Mission Memorial Hospital, local physicians and community health providers to maintain a sustainable and relevant health care model. • Supporting equal access to healthcare for ALL community members. • Collaborating with community partners to address local health concerns.

For more information on how you can get involved today, check out our website! www.mathorg.ca Our next initiative is to facilitate the acquisition of a CT Scanner for Mission Memorial Hospital. Local physicians have been requesting this for several years as an essential tool in order to provide appropriate diagnosis and treatment plans. Fraser Health and the Fraser Valley Healthcare Foundation have agreed to conduct the technical review required to determine where in the hospital it can be located. MATH believes through strong community involvement and engagement we will be able to fundraise to accomplish this initiative. The budget for the project planning/design review is $75,000. We are proud to announce the most recent MATH initiative, the purchase of a Point of Care Ultra-Sound (POCUS) machine – a portable model that provides easy access for physicians throughout the hospital to conduct ultra-sounds. Training for this equipment is being assisted by Dr. Lily Edelson and the Emergency Medical Network of UBC.

You may see Walter Schmur around town, usually reading a book at a cafe. It was at one of these cafes that he saw someone wearing a 'Slo-Pitch' baseball cap and was inspired to write his 3rd novel "Fantastic Baseball".

"Fantastic Baseball" deals with 2 fathers, living in the same town, getting their sole sons involved in baseball. Being of a different age group, each boy ends up in a different league, but an exhibition game is arranged between their two teams. Although a number of players on both teams are also good acrobats, the younger team tries to beat the home-run hitting older team with their skills at bunting. Walter and his 2nd wife Margaret have called Mission home since 18

1985. Originally born in the Ukraine, he came to Canada in 1949, along with his war-widowed mother and his younger brother as post World War II refugees. They were sponsored by his mother’s uncle, who had a small farm in Abbotsford and he completed his grades 1 through 13, there. Throughout his career as an accountant, he self-published short stories, booklets and editorial letters. It was not until he reached his seventies that he began writing novels. Sometimes he finds it hard to believe that from one idea could come a forty to fifty thousand word novel. When you have a chance to chat with him, you will see that his life story is one of passion, imagination and endless possibilities.

Is The Psychology of Change Holding You Back? Why is making a big change in life often so difficult? According to psychologists, maintaining the "status quo" is one of the most powerful motivations we have. If things are "okay", even making a change for the better can be difficult. Our brains resist. You may have experienced this if youʼve thought about selling your current property and finding your next dream home. Your house may be "good enough" for you now and the neighborhood might be "okay" too. So, even if your dream is to get into a better home that's more suited to your family and lifestyle, you may be hesitant.

Topping, Trimming and Removal of Dangerous or Unwanted Trees Fully Insured

778-344-2024

That's just the way the psychology works. One way to get around this psychology is to get your dream out of your head and on to paper. Write down the kind of home you'd love to live in next. For example, you may want a detached home, with 3-bedrooms in a family-oriented neighborhood. Also jot down the specific features and characteristics of the property and neighborhood such as a goodsized backyard, family-size kitchen, and an easy commute to work. That will help you see the real possibilities. Next, find out whether getting into a home like this is doable for you right now. Avoid making assumptions. Get the facts. Find out what you can expect to get for your current property, and what you'll need to spend for the new home. If you discover that moving to your next dream home is something you can swing this year, your hesitancy will likely vanish! I can help you get the information you need to make the best decision. Is it hard to be optimistic living in the shadow of COVID-19? Do you find yourself feeling vulnerable, even anxious at times, as you hear or read the latest news reports?

You are not alone. It seems like virtually every day someone shares their anxiety with me. With kids returning to classrooms and with the ever-present threat of another COVID 19 wave, continued social distancing and the general feeling of personal insecurity while shopping, taking our kids to school, or being physically close to strangers, even acquaintances.

Welcome Holly Richardson, our newest team member at World Odyssey Travel.

In my case, I have been wearing a mask more often – especially during my regular round trips to Victoria while I attended the Spring session of our provincial government back in July and August. Only a small number of MLAs took their seats as most participated through Zoom technology from their constituencies. (I still attended regularly in my capacity as Assistant Deputy Speaker.) It was a surreal experience being in Victoria at the time. – The floor where my office is located was eerily quiet with just a few MLA’s and staff working. The halls – traditionally teeming with people (including many tourists) - were virtually empty. On a positive note, however, I observed a comforting trend of people showing genuine concern for others. While we still know we must keep our distance, this has apparently not impacted our capacity to communicate with those around us.

Our current office hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm

Mornings are my time to run and as I pass through neighborhoods, I am frequently welcomed by passers-by, especially by people walking their dogs. I am sometimes recognized, but the words of greeting are rarely obligatory. Similarly, when walking on a downtown street, I find that people will often smile and engage in a brief conversation (without getting too close of course). Perhaps you have also noted this increased level of sociability. I don’t believe it is my imagination that people are actually becoming more sociable, perhaps as a response to the imposed isolation brought on by the virus. Through it all, we realize we are connected and are ultimately dependent on each other. There may be many physical barriers, but we still value community, knowing that we are connected in many ways.

We promise top quality workmanship every time, no compromise. Rock Chip Repairs | ICBC Windshield Replacement We are open for business. The health and safety of our customers and employees are our first priority. We are committed to complying with all federal and provincial regulations in regards to COVID-19. We thank you for your continued support throughout this time.

ASK THE EXPERT... Dr. Marcy As we age, we all make choices to live a full, active and healthy life. Staying active is crucial for healthy aging. Maintaining mobility can help prevent and manage chronic conditions that too frequently impact seniors. In fact, even a moderate level of physical activity can improve balance, endurance and bone strength.

We miss seeing everyone at the Seniors Centre. The Board has been working on a plan to open this Fall. The Board and District of Mission are working to ensure all safety protocols are in place when we do. Be Kind. Be Calm Be Safe Visit our website for updates: www.missionseniorscentre.com

WELCOMING YOUR NEW DOG INTO YOUR HOME

by Rachelle Mellanby, Owner and Head Trainer of Dogs Crossing

Whether bringing a puppy or a rescue home for the first time, it can be a major adjustment for everyone. Here are some tips on making it a harmonious introduction. KEEP THINGS SIMPLE THE FIRST FEW DAYS

This can be a very anxious time for your dog. Allow for a lot of sleep the first three days. If your breeder or rescue provided you with some items, place them with the dog for a familiar scent. Begin to introduce your new dog to spaces in the house one by one making sure to pet proof each room prior. After the adjustment period, you can start introducing them to friends and training can begin. Dogs young and old need to learn the rules of the house and may need to fine tune some of their manners. RESPECT EXISTING PETS IN THE HOUSE

Existing pets will need time to adjust to the new dynamics just as much as you. During this time, do not allow the new dog to use the other pet’s bed, food dishes, or favorite toy. This is your job to manage, not theirs. Feeding all the household pets at the same time in a safe, controlled manner helps introduce the pets in a positive way (Tip: baby gates, counters, and crates are helpful tools).

VULNERABLE PEOPLE IN THE HOUSEHOLD

To keep your puppy from nipping the kids. Place puppy in a crate next to their play space or have the kids play at the table versus the floor. An adult rescue comes with a lot of unknowns regarding their previous exposure to people and sounds. Monitor all interactions and do not leave them un-attended with kids, seniors, or guests until you feel it is safe to do so. Happy Training and congratulations on your new addition to the family!

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE THERAPY DOGS

Fall SkinCare Prep for Radiant Looking Skin HERE ARE NON-INVASIVE SKINCARE TIPS WHEN YOU NEED CLINICAL RESULTS AT HOME

T he summer months can take a toll on your body in many ways, but the sun and sand especially can cause dry, dull, damaged and (dare I say) aged skin. With every new season, it’s a good idea to evaluate your skincare routine and make changes based on the needs of your skin. That’s why come fall, I recommend treatments to replenish your skins natural moisture and help you capture a youthful appearance. •••

3) Then, there’s always-important peace of mind and contentment. Who doesn’t want less mental stress or anxiety? Following a great facial skincare routine at home outlined specifically for YOUR skins needs by a trained professional takes the stress out of facial care and ads back the relaxation.

5) Dark spots and sun-damaged areas are targeted, and dull skin is transformed, leaving a glowing result. Any advanced signs of aging are set back to a more youthful state with a range of Clinical Serum options. Keep in mind, medical-grade cosmeceuticals are your best option for skincare treatments which can be done right in the comfort of your own home.
