For priority access and superior search criteria, visit www.tomosterberg.realtor/vow Contact the agent you plan to use, and set up a time to view the homes on your list. Once you’ve found the perfect home, the next step is to write an offer. The agent acting on your behalf will negotiate the price, possession dates, and the inclusion of appliances and accessories with the agent representing the seller. Once you reach an agreement, you have an accepted offer! Mission Business Tours Summer has been a busy time for the Mission business community as Mayor and Council undertake one of their core objectives, to gain a stronger understanding of the local business environment and the associated opportunities and challenges they are facing.

FINDING HOME IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

By Lucia Frangione A visually beautiful tale about creating a new life in a new landscape. When Ava and her daughter, Frankie, move to an inherited cottage near Kamloops, they discover that Ava’s late husband’s brother is already living there. What starts as a tense relationship develops in unexpected ways as Frankie finds a role model in her uncle and Ava grows attached to the companionship of this other man. Through memories and photographs, a tender love story unfolds between the three as they begin to thread together a new understanding of family.

4000 MILES

AN UPLIFTING STORY OF GROWING UP AND GROWING OLD By Amy Herzog A touching, vividly rendered story about a sprightly 91-year-old New Yorker and her 21-year-old grandson. Leo, who has just cycled across the country, shows up unannounced on Vera’s doorstep with a bike, no money, and nowhere to go. In time, these unlikely roommates stop squabbling and, with humour and compassion, help each other navigate their changing worlds.

The Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech, also known as SRCTec, is nestled in the downtown core of Mission and has been recently deemed the most resourceful tech hub for the Fraser Valley. SRCTec is proud to unveil their continued support to start-ups and existing tech-based businesses through membership, networking, training, access to capital, office rental, and two new programs to help enhance growth in our community. The District of Mission is teaming up with SRCTec this summer to launch the “TECH STARTS HERE” campaign. This initiative is to help draw tech businesses to Mission and provides them with the necessary information they need to establish roots in our community. It’s time to start erasing the “bedroom community” statement attached to Mission and offer employers and start-ups an easy way to bring business out to the valley. One program that is grabbing attention is the Agri-Tech Venture Acceleration Program. Funded through the BC Innovation Council and the Ministry of Agriculture, SRCTec manages the administration of this new program that allows entrepreneurs who have the next big tech idea in agriculture to establish and market their idea successfully. Our Resident CEO, Peter Briscoe and Program Director, Mike Manion have guided close to 20 individuals through training, mentorship and supplying them with a healthy network to feed from. This team is always on the lookout for new ventures and orientations happen often. Information on this program can be found at www.srctec.org/avap. A secondary program offered is the Innovator

Skills Initiative. This program offers BC techbased employers up to $7,500 in funding to hire BC post-secondary students for project support. This funding is to be used towards their wage and the next hiring set is taking place in September. If you are a postsecondary student or tech employer please visit SRCTec’s information on ISI at www. srctec.org/isi. SRCTec matches employers with students if they don’t already have one in mind. SRCTec is opening their doors on Wednesday, September 16th at 3-5pm so the members of this community and beyond can learn about or programs and offerings. Stop in to introduce yourself, bring a friend and in the meantime please visit us online at www.srctec. org. Building companies, creating jobs and investing in futures – that’s what SRCTec is all about. Bottom line, SRCTec hopes to have ideas turn into business, become established and grow locally.

This year the 20th anniversary of the program will be celebrated on Saturday, October 3rd at the Cedar Valley Mennonite Church Auditorium from 1:3Opm – 4:30pm. Valerie Hundert A Celebration of Life

Valerie Lee Hundert (1925 - 2014), “one of the community’s best known volunteers,â€? moved to Mission with her husband Mel from Whitby, Ontario in 1991. An astute businesswoman, mother and life-long volunteer, she was born in Milestone, SK and raised in Ontario. After graduating from high school, she worked in radio, television and advertising before establishing and operating her own unique gift shop and antiques businesses. 7DXJKW E\ KHU ORYLQJ DQG LQĂ XHQWLDO JUDQGPRWKHU WR “think of other peopleâ€? she already had a distinguished record of volunteer community service when she arrived in Mission. Almost immediately she became involved in local community groups, including the Mission Artists’ Association, the Mission Arts Council, the Mission Health Care Auxiliary, the Mission Heritage Association and the Mission District Historical Society. In 1994, she became President of the Heritage Association and through her visionary planning and creative collaborations she became a dynamic force in continuing Norma Kenney’s dream for the park. Her countless accomplishments at the park include the ongoing success of the Twilight Concerts; and the construction of the Grotto, the gateway to the park entrance, the bell tower that houses the original St. Mary’s School bell cast in 1875, the covered picnic shelter, and the administration building. EARTHTACULAR ROCKS AND GEMS Rocks, Gems, Minerals, Local Gifts, Custom Jewelry, Classes The next time you are downtown Mission stop by the store and check out some great new walking sticks carved and created by Merle Nelson. Merle is a local character who spends some of his time carving different items from YDULRXV W\SHV RI ZRRG KH ÀQGV ORFDOO\ 0HUOH incorporates stones into some of his carvings to give them a unique look. We carry birthstone walking sticks and many other cool carved items. If it’s something more personal you are looking for, we can always have Merle create a custom piece for you.

Betty’s pieces can be found all over the world and are highly sought after by many collectors. She creates all sorts of different animal totems and all of her work has it’s own unique character to it. Again if it’s something different you are looking for, we can have Betty produce a one of a kind original for you.

Hubert Billy is a new addition to our store. He is an amazing young artist who is just coming into his own and on the verge of a breakthrough. We have been fortunate enough to acquire some of his original pieces in the form of canvass work and carvings. As an art speculator, it is my belief that Hubert will go on to create some incredible pieces over the next few years. We have also been able to secure his line of greeting cards, all of which are so unique and vibrant. If you need a greeting card for any occasion stop by the shop and grab a signed Hubert Billy for only 5 bucks!

If it’s rocks and gems you’re into, we have one of the best collections in the Fraser valley. We have a great selection of semi precious stones in all types of jewelry including rings, pendants, earrings and many others. There is a wide selection of birthstones, chakras and metaphysical to choose from as well. Maybe you are looking for something extra special, we got that too! One of our creative jewelry artisans can create a one of a kind piece just for you or that someone special. Stop by and check out our incredible selection soon.

While walking out of a movie theatre in downtown Vancouver on a chilly October night nearly 10 years ago Mission resident, Gregory Ould noticed a man lying in an alcove at the side of a building. Ould went up to the man, whose appearance looked weathered and rough, and asked the man if there was anything that he could do to help him out. Expecting he would ask for money, cigarettes or coffee, Greg wasn’t prepared for what the man did say to him. “I could use a blanket‌ to survive the night.â€? Blown away by those words Greg went out and brought back a blanket. That act of one offer has continued to blossom from a family endeavor as he was joined by his young son Ben and later, daughter Emma to a team of amazing Blanket Ambassadors and wonderful Blanketeers throughout the year.

The Year Of The Soil:

b e W d oo F l oi S e h t Understanding Who am I? I am a farmer, only in the second year of growing food for a living. I grow organic food because I believe that in order to grow healthy food you must respect the soil. Respect for soil means using nothing that will destroy the life in the soil, and rather, working cooperatively with that life. Perhaps you already know about the different forms of life that are present in healthy soil, but for the uninitiated this article will serve as a brief introduction to that micro universe- soil.

BRIMming with Optimism It was a Saturday in April at 3:55 pm - did you feel the ground shift? No it wasn’t an earthquake, it was the moment eight Mission citizens stepped forward in commitment to create something special, together.

Ready to ride

We’re already there!

We’re BRIM and we’re Building Resilience in Mission by raising awareness and launching projects to make Mission stronger. We’re part of the Transition Town movement – an international grassroots organisation rebuilding communities ready to ride the roller coaster of climate change and rising energy and food prices. After all, when a roller coaster has a strong foundation and a friend to ride with, it isn’t scary – it’s fun!
