Ah, Christmas... a time so rich with memories: family traditions, memories of that one perfect gift, that family trip to Grandma’s where you melted your only eyeglasses on the top of her wood stove (Anyone else? No?)...

If you’re a reader, books will likely be the common thread in your memories of Christmas. Even today, in the age of devices and distraction, there’s usually a few wrapped books under the Christmas tree!

At Totally BOOK-ish we always have plenty of book gifting suggestions, and I’ve included some of our favorites below, as well as an exciting product ANNOUNCEMENT! But first, let’s get to this issue’s BOOK-ish review...

The Killing Kind by Jane Casey was one of my favourite reads this year. I’m a sucker for a good cover, but as we all know, not every fabulous cover means a fabulous book. I’m happy to report this story did not disappoint.

Meet lawyer Ingrid Lewis, young, ambitious, and a victim of constant harassment by a past client, John Webster. Despite successfully defending him, he has turned his unwanted attention onto her, threatening her, stalking her, and even going so far as to create YouTube videos that are aimed to destroy her reputation. He is a manipulative sociopath, ruining her personal life and doing his best to ruin her professional one.

When a fellow lawyer and friend is killed after borrowing Ingrid’s distinctive red umbrella, Ingrid can only assume that she was the intended victim, and John Webster was the perpetrator. So begins another game of cat and mouse. But when Webster shows up claiming that Ingrid IS in danger but not from him, everything she has believed about herself and Webster is thrown into chaos. He says he’s trying to protect her. Should she believe him, or is this just another one of his many games?

The Killing Kind is fast, smart, and absolutely binge worthy. It would be a great gift for anyone who loves legal thrillers and edge-of-your seat story-telling.

Here’s a few more of our favorite reads that would be perfect for under the Christmas tree!

F Fast & Thrilling: The Nightshift by Alex Finlay, True Crime Story by Joseph Knox, Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister, Other People’s Children by Jeff Hoffman

S Smart Mysteries: Magpie Lane by Lucy Atkins, Marple: 12 New Mysteries by Various Authors, Thursday Murder Club (series) by Richard Osman,

H Historical: The Circus Train by Amita Parikh, The Embroidered Book by Kate Heartfield, The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams

F Fantasy/Sci Fi: The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean, All the Seas of the World by Guy Gavriel Kay, Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

S Strong Fiction: Five Little Indians by Michelle Good, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Lucy By the Sea by Elizabeth Strout, The Winners by Fredrik Backman

N Non-Fiction: I’m Glad my Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy, Liar’s Poker by Michael Lewis, Meditations: A New Translation by Marcus Aurelius

Should your Home be in “Move-In” Condition when you Sell?

Imagine you’re shopping for a car. You find one that’s a suitable model, a recent year, and hasn’t been driven a lot. The price is right, too.

But, there’s a caveat. The paint is worn off in several places. The driver’s seat upholstery is torn and requires repair. And the tires needed to be replaced… a long time ago. Would you still buy it? You might. However, unless you enjoy fixing up cars, you’d probably hesitate to make the purchase. After all, in addition to seeing the car itself, you’re noticing the work that needs to be done to fix it.

The same holds true when selling your home.

The more “move-in” ready you make the property the more likely buyers are to become interested in buying it. Like when viewing a car, you want buyers to focus on all your home’s wonderful features, not on the repairs and updates that need to be done. That being said, how important is it that your home be “move-in ready” when you sell?

That depends, in large part, on the market. If it’s currently a seller’s market in the neighbourhood — lots of buyers but comparatively few properties for sale — getting your home move-in ready is less important. There is already high demand for your property. (However, getting all repairs done and staging your property effectively will still provide a significant advantage.)

In a buyer’s market, where there are more homes for sale than buyers, you’re in a competitive situation. So, anything you can do to give your listing an advantage is worth the effort. That includes making it as “move-in” ready as possible. There are instances where sellers have gone too far and spent more than they needed to.

I would be happy to meet with you to help you decide what needs and does not need to be done. Call me at 604-615-6446 for your noobligation consultation.
