Hundert to cancer. Both of these strong and courageous women encouraged and inspired me to live my life to the fullest and be true to myself. I will miss both very much and send my thoughts and best wishes to Monica and Mel, and their families. Merry Christmas Mission! On behalf of the What’s On! Mission team, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year. We have appreciated the support of our community throughout 2014 and we look forward to an eventful 2015.

Mission Christmas Bureau NEEDS YOUR HELP!
The Mission Christmas Bureau has been helping families in need in our community for over 40 years. Last year 711 hampers were given to over 1600 people in Mission. The cost to put together each hamper is approximately $70 - $200 which is raised through donations from the community, businesses, and fundraisers.
HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS… • Donate - cash, non-perishable food items, new, unwrapped gifts for children (toys) and teens (gift cards), baby items including baby food, diapers, and formula • Volunteer - every year, it takes approximately 400 volunteers to serve the families in need • Support a community event in support of the Mission Christmas Bureau Christmas at the Clarke December 17th at the Clarke Theatre Tickets at Fraser Valley Ace Hardware, Prospera Credit Union, and House of James Rotary Choir Festival November 26th at the Clarke Theatre Admission by donation to the Christmas Bureau Mission Fire & Rescue supports the Christmas Bureau Every year by collecting donations in neighbors around Mission - watch for them coming to your neighborhood in December and please give generously Donations can be dropped off at the Christmas Bureau headquarters at 32646 Logan Avenue or at Mission Community Services Society headquarters at 33179 Second Avenue or at a seasonal, satellite office like the one it featured at The Junction Mall last Christmas.

Economic Development Office Moving to Downtown! Mission’s recently announced Technical Centre of Excellence (TCE) will share space with a District of Mission neighbour. As Economic Development Officer (EDO), I was excited to learn about the plan to move the economic development office to the downtown core. The intent is to begin moving into the space in mid-December. Locating the Economic Development Office downtown places further emphasis and commitment on the District’s downtown revitalization efforts. And having a District presence downtown brings a host of other benefits as well. As mentioned in the previous What’s On! Mission article, the 11,000 square foot facility is currently being upgraded to house the TCE and its venture acceleration program funded through provincial support. Along with the TCE and its start-up businesses will be an established technology association to mentor and provide commercialization support. Combined with a private high tech company presence, these additions will initially bring approximately 30 well- paying jobs to the downtown core. Having the Economic Development Office under the same roof draws further attention to a sector that will play such a critical role in Mission’s economy. It will also improve visibility and access to the services offered by the EDO, and it aligns perfectly with future plans for a downtown post-secondary education facility. The mostly vacant former supermarket building is poised to become a substantial economic driver for Mission. The tech centre, operated by the non-profit organization SRCTec, will take up a portion of the building to deliver its commercialization programs and educational services. The balance of the north

side of the building will house the private high tech anchor tenant. The economic development office will be located in the former coffee shop area on the south side and will have room to accommodate additional municipal presence in the future. The decision to move the economic development office emphasizes the fact that the District of Mission is very serious about improving the downtown core. With 30 new jobs and the increased potential to attract new high tech employers, the combined presence of the municipality, SRCTec and other private firms within this facility will reinforce the work being done to achieve the 10 Big Steps in the MissionCity Downtown Action Plan. To learn more about the Mission City Downtown Action Plan and the 10 Big Steps, call me anytime or visit the District of Mission web page under the planning department to review the Action Plan in its entirety.

My name is Roger Racine. I am the biggest skeptic. I need to talk to people first hand and see the results on them before I jump into a situation. My sister-in-law had 6 Photon Genius light therapy sessions at FUEL, in Mission, and she feels fantastic! I decided to give the Photon Genius light therapy a try because I had many things that were bothering me. The list of things that have changed for me are incredible: better circulation in my feet and fingers, better eye sight, my scar tissue has disappeared, my viens don't hurt anymore, the colour of my skin is healthy looking, brown spots on my chest are now gone, the soreness on my neck is gone, and my back pain of 20 years is gone. I couldn't sleep before and now I sleep 7-9 hours. I'm not 100% yet but I FEEL 100%. Dolf has also suggested vitamins for me to take to further boost my immune system and I drink his Dolphin Water. Thanks Dolf for everything! My name is Rita Racine. 5 years ago I had an operation to help shrink a fibroid which was the size of a grapefruit. The operation did shrink it about 2 inches over a 3 year period but I still felt it growing and all the symptoms were coming back. I heard about the Photon Genius light therapy from Dolf at FUEL in Mission. I took 6 treatments and I no longer feel the fibroid and I have more energy and better circulation. I also drink Dolphin Water and do a daily detox. Thanks to Dolf and Zorka for all your help and support.
We're Hiring. Submit all resumes to Dolf in person at FUEL.

Recipes from The Blackberry Kitchen
Back by Popular Demand! We have had so many requests for the Blackberry Kitchen’s famous scone recipe that we are bringing it to you once again... This was the original recipe when The Blackberry Kitchen first opened in 1986!
Heritage Scones Makes 12 scones.
Ingredients 2 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda 3 teaspoons sugar ½ teaspoon salt ¼ cup butter 1 cup buttermilk
Directions Place all dry ingredients in a bowl, stir to mix together. Cut or shred butter into small pieces and add to dry mix. Rub to mix. Add the buttermilk slowly. Mix by hand to bind all ingredients together. Knead lightly about 10-12 times. Divide in half. Shape each half into a ball and then roll out to 8” diameter. Cut each circle into 6 wedges like a pie, separate and bake at 450 degrees until light brown. Serve with Devonshire Cream and Blackberry Jam.

SEASONS GREETINGS FROM FRASER VALLEY ACE HARDWARE The holidays are coming, and once you’ve erected the Christmas tree or Festivus Pole, lit the menorah, or the diyas, it’s time to think about shopping and entertainment. At Fraser Valley Ace Hardware you can find gifts for all the useful people in your life, or you could do what we at Ace Hardware like to do, and do a little something for the community. We are passionate about our support for local charities and community events, including but not limited to: The Christmas Bureau, Fraser House, Mission Food Bank, Mission Hospice, The Candlelight Parade, and Christmas at the Clarke. We are proud of our community and we love to give back to the people who have shown us so much support over the years. If you are looking for great family entertainment close to home, you can always take the gang to one of our favourite places, Opening Nite Theatre.
Nite, you’ll wonder why you ever made the long drive into Vancouver for anything. Ever.
Every year Opening Nite Theatre puts on four major shows, and every December and January, they put on their annual Christmas Panto. A Panto is an old British tradition, wherein an old fairy tale is retold through popular music, cross-dressing and slapstick humour. This year it’s Alice in PantoLand, and when Alice goes down the rabbit hole, she’ll be serenaded by the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle, bamboozled by the Mad Hatter, and will find herself on trial in front of the crazy Queen of Hearts (played by the ever fantastic Gerwyn Mills). In every Panto the show is overseen by the hilarious fairies Fairy Nice (played by Jennie Bice) and Fairy Naughty (played by Susan Dearing). Sisters with a serious case of sibling rivalry, they travel through time and space to interfere with fairy tales every Christmas. It’s great fun for the whole family, and the theatre is situated right downtown across from the West Coast Express Station.
Alice in PantoLand runs December 12-21, 2014 and January 2-11, 2015. Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are available online at www.openingnitetheatre.com, at ontstickets@ hotmail.com or by phone at 604-826-ONTS. The theatre is at 33223 Railway Ave in Mission.
In conclusion, we at Fraser Valley Ace Hardware would like to wish you a very happy holiday from the bottom of our hearts, however you choose to spend them, and as always, please enjoy your free time responsibly and plan a safe ride home!
Thank you Mission

TW Excavating Ltd. Over 26 years pushing dirt in the Fraser Valley... and still pushing strong! In 1988, Tom Cassel was presented with an opportunity to make the transition from heavy equipment operator to owner/operator. His employer, Bob Kitsul was looking to retire and saw something in Tom that led him to offer Tom the opportunity to purchase the business. Tom grabbed the opportunity and ran with it with the support of his wife Wendy, and together, they haven’t looked back since. TW Excavating Ltd was registered in the Spring of 1988. Primarily specializing in site prep, land clearing, and driveways, Tom worked as hard as he could building his business and his reputation as one of the most skilled and meticulous equipment operators in the Fraser Valley. Today, Tom specializes in the development of equestrian and bovine facilities as well as large scale drainage projects. He has worked all over the valley for hundreds of small and large property owners, contractors and developers and has become known as a specialist in what he does.
Tom takes pride in every job he works on and he works hard to provide long term solutions for his customers rather than leaving loose ends that will likely need to be addressed later. He believes that if you are going to do a job, then you had better do the very best job you can and be proud of the work you do - lessons he learned from his Dad back home on the farm. Tom loves meeting property owners and hearing the dreams they have for their properties. Considering a small, medium, or large project on your own property? Give Tom Cassel a call for a free estimate of your next project - you will be happy you did!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar & other Eric Carle Favourites from Mermaid Theatre
Michael Kaeshammer Michael Kaeshammer has been called a triple-threat combo of piano virtuosity, vocal ability and charisma. His sound is a singular brand of pop tinged jazz that owes as much to Billy Joel and Paul McCartney as to Professor Longhair and Albert Ammons. Let Michael invite you in and take you on a musical journey.
Adapted, designed & directed by Jim Morrow Music by Steven Naylor Narration by Gordon Pinsent
Audience meet and greet after the performance. Three beloved stories by Eric Carle, award-winning children’s book illustrator and author, are retold on stage through the magic of black light and fanciful puppets.

Being an event planner, I am always trying to raise the bar with each event that we produce - especially when the event we are planning is my own birthday! This year, we hosted a big ole drag show at The Stage in Mission on my birthday. It was a very successful event with glamourous entertainment and a packed house filled with a lively crowd. No birthday party is complete without a cake and being that this birthday party was also a DRAG Show, I knew we needed to bring in a professional to build us the perfect glam cake. Meet my friend Maureen Dunbar. I met Maureen when she and I were both employed with the same financial institution right here in Mission. Maureen and I clicked right away and it is no wonder that neither of us are working for the bank any longer - Maureen is one of the most creative people I know which is why I was so excited when she announced on Facebook some time ago that she was starting her own cake decorating business. She began to post photos of beautiful cakes that she had designed and created - wedding cakes, birthday cakes, kid’s cakes - all very beautiful and very well done. I knew that Maureen was the perfect person to create my birthday DRAG Show glam cake! And boy did she ever! Check it out…
Meet my friend Maureen, the cake decorator: My name is Maureen and I love decorating cakes, party planning and entertaining. Friends and family have challenged me over the years to make bigger and better cakes, more extravagant parties and to share my creations. So I accepted!!! I love interacting with all my clients and collaboratively brainstorming. I encourage sending me ideas, pictures and links to completely understand your vision. This also allows me to get to know you a bit better in order to deliver the best product and create your ultimate vision. I enjoy reading comments online and seeing people’s faces when they first see their special cake. It makes me happy to make others happy! Most of my cakes are made from scratch including my delicious buttercream icing. Vanilla cakes with Vanilla buttercream icing are my most popular at home and with my clients. I would also like to introduce one of the most helpful and truly dedicated people behind Flutterbyewings ~ Cakes & Things. She is a HUGE asset with her amazing baking skills and works very hard to help make us a success. Kiera has been baking with me for the past few years (pretty sure she has memorized the recipes). Kiera helps keep me motivated and helps get the orders out for all of our wonderful clients. She has a great eye for detail and is very hard working. I couldn’t do this without her!

MISSION WILL MISS YOU VAL! I first met Valerie Hundert on November 11th, 1999. It was Remembrance Day and it was an election year. I had decided to throw my hat in the ring and was a candidate for city council. We were at the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Legion. Immediately following the ceremonies, a lady named Valerie came right over to me; I did not know who she was but she was definitely purposeful in her approach to meet me. She told me that her name was Valerie and that she worked at the Park, she didn’t say which Park, but I knew I was supposed to know. Valerie told me that she thought it would be a good idea if I called her after the election and that she would show me what I needed to do to get involved in the community. My life changed that day and it is because of Valerie that I am doing what I am doing today. Soon after the election, I met with Valerie. She told me that she thought it would be a good opportunity for me to join the board of the Mission Heritage Association. I did not know what it meant to ‘be on the board’ but it sounded exciting and I felt that if Val suggested it must be a good idea. That began my love for Fraser River Heritage Park, the Park of course, and my career as a community volunteer. I spent 3 wonderful years on the board of the Mission Heritage Association and earned my stripes as a community volunteer at the Park working with Valerie, Barbara Fuhrman, and others to make events like Canada Day, the Twilight Concert Series, Friday on the Fraser, the Rose Garden Tea, and many others happen for the community to enjoy. Val loved the Park and she dedicated thousands of hours to making it the heart of our community, a gathering place where everyone could enjoy the spectacular scenery. I was proud to be part of creating a legacy for our community and even more proud to work with and for Val, for it was her vision and her belief in the vision of her friend Norma Kenney that inspired me to fall in love with the Park, the Blackberry Kitchen, and spending summer evenings in the most beautiful place in the Fraser Valley. Over the past 15 years, I watched as Val made her mark in Mission. I worked with her on a number of community projects, boards, and committees. Some of my favorite memories are of our time working on various political campaigns. I shared Val’s love of politics and we spent many hours discussing and debating issues and evaluating candidates
- of course she was always able to persuade me to agree with her view of how things should be. Over the years, I watched in awe as she spent her time dedicated to our community… the Mission Heritage Association, the Mission Historical Society, the Mission Arts Council, the Mission Artists Association, the Earnest Jacobsen Rose Garden, Paths and Pathfinders, Heritage Week, local riding associations for the BC Liberals, the Liberal Party of Canada, and others. It is difficult to go far in our community without seeing Valerie’s influence. She was passionate about Mission and about making it a wonderful place to be. Val taught me many things over the years, but the one thing that will never leave me, is how much Val loved a hand written note. I can’t count the number of times I received a card or short hand written note from Val in the mail - always at just the right time - with an encouraging word, letting me know she was thinking of me. Those notes meant so much and I will miss receiving them from her. The last note she sent me is still on my fridge… she congratulated me on my awards with What’s On! Mission, thanked me for sponsoring the Rose Garden Tea, and told me she valued my friendship. I will cherish this note forever.
“Thanks Val for keeping me on my toes; for inspiring me to be the engaged in my community; for encouraging me to live a healthy life; and most of all, for being a gracious and true friend. I will miss you. Mission will miss you. We will always remember you…
LOVE, YOUR FRIEND, CORY.” Whats On! • www.whatsonmission.ca

C’mon get HEALTHY -
Don’t wait, MEDITATE... check out these
Contributed by Wendy Weymann
5Meditate
reasons you should
All the scientific research is pointing towards one thing: meditation is extremely good for you. If you want to get healthy by reducing stress, anxiety, depression or negativity, meditation is a fantastic place to start. Here are 5 reasons why I love meditation:
1 2 3 4 5
Reduce anxiety ~ I’ve been anxious since I was a child and meditation has been extremely helpful in helping me manage my anxiety level. If I take time to meditate every day I’m WAY less anxious and when I miss a few days of meditation I can feel my anxiety start to creep up again. Get CLEAR ~ Should I get a new job? Go on a vacation? Go back to school? There are always lots of decisions to be made and sometimes it can be really confusing to find the answers. When you meditate you create the space to get clear on what you REALLY want out of life. LET GO ~ Sometimes life is tough, relationships deteriorate, marriages break up, people get angry and it’s easy to get stuck in negative thought patterns. It’s easy to say “just let it go” but it’s much harder to do. Meditation is the “How to” process of letting go. When you sit down to meditate start with an intention “I’m ready to let this go” it might take a while but it’s a great place to start. Increase Focus & Concentration ~ Life is busy and there are so many distractions out there – if you have an iphone I’m guessing it’s a bit of a distraction for you! The good news is concentration can be a learned skill and meditation is the perfect way to practice your concentration skills. Distraction wastes our energy; concentration restores it. - Sharon Salzberg Enjoy your life ~ After 10 years of daily meditation I can honestly say my life is so much more joyful than it used to be. I’m way happier in my day-to-day life and it’s a direct result of my meditation practice. When you take the time to find that stillness within you start to realize what’s important and what’s no longer serving you.
What are you waiting for?? Happy meditating!! Wendy Weymann is a yoga instructor in Mission, BC who specializes in meditation. She lives in Mission with her family. www.wendyweymann.com

We have just celebrated our 2nd annual Culture Days in Mission, the last week-end of September. The Mission Cultural Resources Commission (CRC) is the community contact for this national initiative, now in its 5th year. We make connections between individuals and groups, help promote and support existing events and foster new initiatives. For example the Mission Farmers Market collaborated with the Mission Community Archives to create AgriCulture – a pictorial display of Mission’s agricultural heritage. Mission Adopt-A-Block, CRC, Mission Arts Council, and FV Watersheds Coalition worked together on the 2nd Mission Rivers Day Celebration at the Mission Harbour and Xá:ytem Interpretive Longhouse opened its doors for tours. A photo album of the week-ends events can be found on our FB page at www.facebook.com/CulturalResourcesCommission.
Cultural Tourism & Economic Development, Muse Awards, Culture Days, Cultural Mapping, Community Forums, Cultural Amenities and more. If you would like to be appointed to the commission or are interested in working on a sub-committee please contact the CRC staff liaison Stephanie Key, Deputy Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture at skey@mission.ca

I Love Mission Forum
We know how much arts and culture enrich the social fabric of the community and how cultural industries have a huge role to play in economic development. “The creative sector -- a $4-billion industry in B.C. employing some 85,000 people -- includes all self-employed individuals, profit, non-profit and public enterprises including incorporated and unincorporated businesses that produce, create, distribute or conserve cultural and artistic goods and services”, (UBC study figures from 2010). The CRC has just completed a forum I Love Mission inviting community groups and individuals to a conversation on Mission’s future as a “Creative City”! We’d like to share that exchange and keep the dialogue going so join our blog Culture 365 on our website: http://www.missionculturalresources.ca/ culture-365/
CRC Appointments
The CRC is also seeking new members to begin January 2015. CRC members provide input and make recommendations to council on matters that shape the infrastructure and support base for regional cultural activities, services and organizations. We are currently engaged in the following areas: Public Art Policy,
