To help you make the most of your time here we’ve put together an essential guide packed with what’s happening in the area. We’ve got some great ideas for things to do, places to see, where to eat and drink, and places to stay. December is a magical time of year to visit the Cairngorms National Park. Take the kids to see Santa play the bagpipes at Blair Castle or watch him feed the animals at the Highland Wildlife Park. Get into the festive spirit; visit one of the pantomimes in Aviemore or Braemar. Christmas shopping is made easy with local Craft Fairs happening in Grantown on Spey, Nethy Bridge and Aviemore. Put on your dancing shoes and party the night away to live music at various locations across the Park. Finally bring in the New Year with the Torchlight procession in Nethy Bridge or join a Hogmanay Ceilidh in Aviemore, Ballater or Boat of Garten. “Santa Claus is coming to town” …or a place near you in the Park

e know that December is a particularly busy month for Santa. As well as preparing for the ‘big day’ he is out and about delighting children, young and old; heading up parades with his reindeer, starring at Christmas fayres or receiving guests in his sparkling winter grotto.
But Santa makes appearances in some Castle. Here he takes a little time out to relax and to play his bagpipes. Yes, very unexpected spots too. that’s right - a bagpipe playing Santa Did you know that Santa has a passion Claus! Perhaps we should not be for trains - particularly the steam and surprised by his musical talents; after all vintage variety? A firm favourite of his he loves those jingle bells! The unique is the Santa Express on the Strathspey Railway. Take a ride and you will be rewarded with stunning views as the train winds its way through the wintry countryside AND Santa will be there armed with a sack full of presents and mince pies galore! A place that Santa is particularly fond of is the magnificent setting of Blair

vision of bagpipe-playing Santa can be witnessed on Sunday 11 and 18 December, playing festive tunes on the pipes before entering his grotto in one of the oldest parts of the castle. While there, there is an opportunity to take a tour and experience the castle at Christmas, decorated as it would have been in Victorian times. You may even spot the elves helping the family prepare for Christmas!

Aviemore Santa Run
From a Santa Walk to a Santa Run! In Aviemore, on Saturday 17 December, you can see hundreds of Santas, gathered on the start line, as part of a festive charity fun run. The annual ‘Red & White’ bearded 1 mile or 5k route is a great way to get into the festive spirit and, the following day, 18 December, Santa Ramblers can do it all again with a 5k walk or jog through the countryside around Braemar, raising money for local causes. You will need to register for both events - and to get your
compulsory Santa Suit of course! We know that Santa is a kind soul and so he is likely to join in with the fundraising; the real challenge is to spot the real Santa among all the imposters! Events mentioned are scheduled as indicated, or on most weekends in December, and daily during Christmas week. Please check the relevant websites or Facebook however for up to the minute details on dates, times, booking and availability.

Young animal lovers will be in their element when they come across Santa tending his reindeer. You can visit the herd and perhaps see Santa in the paddock at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre at Glenmore. See the reindeer up close and say hello to Santa. Or head to the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park in Kincraig and join in a Santa Walk as Father Christmas checks out the reindeer in their enclosure. Boys and girls will receive a small gift from Santa, and, in return, they are invited to bring a carrot or an apple as their Christmas present for the reindeer.
