National Park A FOR

YOU!

This month we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Cairngorms being awarded National Park status… but what is a National Park… and why is our National Park so special?

Simply explained, National Parks are an international family of special places, recognised for their world-class landscapes, wonderful wildlife and fascinating culture and heritage.

There are fifteen National Parks in the UK and each one has been designated as a protected landscape because of its own special qualities: each one is different and remarkable in its own way, but all work together.

The Cairngorms National Park certainly holds its own when it comes to all of the special stuff…here are some of our favourite facts…

The Cairngorms National Park:

• Is a whopping 1,748 sq miles making it the largest National Park in the UK, it’s twice the size of the Lake District National Park…and bigger than the whole of Luxembourg!

• Is home to one-quarter of Scotland’s native forest

• Has more breeding waders than the whole of Wales

• Is home to a quarter of the rare and endangered species in the UK

• Has four of the five highest mountains in the UK

• Is home to 55 Munro’s (mountains above 3000 feet in height)

• The Cairngorm plateau is the highest and most extensive range of arctic mountain landscape in the British Isles

• Has some of cleanest waterways in Europe are in the Cairngorms, there are around sixty lochs, many more lochans (small lochs) and three majestic rivers: The River Dee, the River Don and the River Spey

• Was established in September 2003, in 2008 the boundary extended to take in Blair Atholl & Spittal of Glenshee and in 2010 extended again to encompass Highland Perthshire and Glenshee.

The Cairngorms National Park is home to 18,000 people and the folk who live here feel its magic. The culture and heritage woven amongst our communities is tangible: living in, loving and caring for this place is integral to the culture of the Cairngorms; an outdoor lifestyle that embraces our mountains, waters and woodlands and a sense of belonging that anchors the soul.

Our local community’s love of the Cairngorms National Park is mirrored by the 2 million visitors who choose this wonderful spot for their holidays every year - some from Scotland, some from the UK and some from far flung corners of the globe… and lots of people come many many times… which we love!!!

Sharing the National Park is more than just a little bit special - feeling the wonder as you gaze across Loch Morlich on a late September evening, taking in the majesty of Blair Atholl, embracing the atmosphere at one of our iconic Highland Games, feeling the wind on your face as you cycle on the Speyside or Deeside Way - these are true Cairngorms experiences to be treasured.

We are very lucky in Scotland, we enjoy world leading legislation around responsible access, which was a founding principle of National Parks. These special places are here to be enjoyed, nurtured and of course, cared for. To check out your rights and responsibilities take a look at the easy to read Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

The Cairngorms National Park is like no other - take in the mountains, the pink and purple kissed moorlands of late summer, look up at the canopy of our ancient woodlands and take in our dark skies. Clear your mind and let the Cairngorms National Park touch your soul.
