WELCOME JUNE 2022 Welcome to the Cairngorms National Park and your special June 2022 edition of What’s On, the free events guide. on e Bikeath

Kingussi

With June 2022 being the historic month that the Queen celebrates a whopping 70 years on the throne, the Park is positively brimming with excitement and party vibes. After all, the Cairngorms is one of her favourite places in the world. Whether you want to celebrate by picnic-ing like a royal, or attending a beacon lighting ceremony or breaking out into collective song, you can! One of the jewels in the events crown this month (pun intended) is bound to be Ballater - the village is really pulling out all the stops to be jubilant this June (See feature pages 10-11). But don’t worry if royalty doesn’t float your boat, there are plenty of diverse things to do throughout the entire month. If you’re a runner, for instance, why not get yourself to Blair Castle for its trail weekend on 4-5 June? Or if you’re a history enthusiast, then Grantown is the place for you on 11-12 for its ‘viking re-enactment’ event. Or if you are a dancer at heart you will love Newtonmore’s step dance weekend on 17-19.

Picnic Queen LIKE A

THIS JUBILEE JUNE

The east side of the Park is steeped in royalty, hence its name ‘Royal Deeside’, and makes the perfect location for a summer’s day picnic which feels that bit more special…

Yellow W elly Tour

s

Deeside locals have reported many sightings of the Royal family over the years enjoying a picnic in the vicinity of their beloved holiday home, Balmoral, which is on the SnowRoads running from Grantown-on-Spey to Blairgowrie.

Balmoral Castle

The grounds of Balmoral Castle itself, with its glorious gardens, make for an idyllic picnic spot.

Yellow Welly Tours

EAT LIKE A

queen

The Park is full of fantastic local food suppliers. Why not go premium with your picnic and pick up some homegrown meat while you’re here? Or try the produce of local artisans from our cheesemakers to bakers to chocolate makers to whisky distillers? Many of our food suppliers in the Park have Royal warrants, issued when they’ve supplied goods or services to the Royals. So, you really can eat like a Queen!

Similarly Blair Castle and its gardens is a uniquely Royal location. The story goes that Queen Victoria stayed here for 3 weeks in 1844, thought to be the start of her lifelong love of the Cairngorms. A third is the abandoned old settlement of Auchtavan by Braemar. This, according to local guide of Yellow Welly Tours, Simon Blackett, was the late Queen Mother’s favourite spot.
