Godfather of modern cooking to open restaurant in Congresbury

HE GODFATHER of modern cooking, Marco Pierre White, is to open a new restaurant at the South West’s premier four-star hotel. The new restaurant will open at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Bristol South, Cadbury House in Congresbury and will start to welcome guests towards the end of August. The fiery chef, famed for his no-nonsense approach and Michelin-star food, has confirmed that his latest eaterie will be at the contemporary venue that has been transformed over the past four years following investment of around £20 million. The opening of the new restaurant follows meetings with

Owner Nick Taplin and Group General Manager Mark Hands who are now getting the new venue ready to open later in the year. Mark Hands, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have someone of Marco’s calibre open one of his restaurants at DoubleTree by Hilton, Cadbury House. It clearly demonstrates our commitment to continually bring the best to the venue and reinforces the venue’s position as being the best hotel in the region.” By the age of 33, Marco had become - at the time - the youngest chef to be awarded three Michelin Stars and had working for him Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal. Marco added: “I’ve visited Doubletree by Hilton, Cadbury House a number of times now and I’ve been very impressed not only by the venue itself but the vision of Nick and Mark. They have a self belief and determination to bring the very best to guests who stay at the hotel and dine in the restaurant. “It’s going to be a very exciting time and I’m really looking forward to bring my vision of dining out to the South West.” John Hallett managing director of Destination Bristol added: “As far as restaurants go this really has to be the one of the best things to have happened across Bristol and the South West for a long time.” ●

W

ITH ENGLAND poised to play their final game in their group draw, I’m reminded of the words of Jose Mourinho who once said “There is no pressure at the top. The pressure’s being second or third”. As we go to print, in just a few hours the die will have been cast and our national team’s fate sealed, but while there is hope let’s get behind the national sport in a spirit of unity and positivity. Yes friends, June was a heck of a month and with our men preoccupied with the aforementioned, what did the ladies do? They shopped and partied and kicked up their heels and Bristol has been buzzing ever since. As a real party atmosphere descends upon the city, a mention or three to some of the highlights that was June. I start with the Bath and West Show which never fails to deliver. I was there of course with some of the What’s On cuties and a few chums from Wookey Hole and to say that we were ‘sun-kissed’ by the end of it was putting it mildly. My dears! I was bronzed and magnificent – dare I say it so for days out this year it’s got to be the West Country and nothing else. Those darlings that are the magnificent Lady Boy’s of Bangkok made their annual visit to town and once again proved their comic skill and virtuosity and thanks to Philip and the team for giving us a show stopping night to remember. Amongst other show stopping highlights how could I leave out the Westlife boys who made us swoon with their special brand of celtic charm. Then there was the Race evening at Ashton Court and a VIP invitation to sip Pimms on the lawn while enjoying a bit of a flutter. As you have learned to expect, CW threw himself into this with full vigour and while the three course meal was nothing less than perfection, the beating my pocket took in the pursuit of my art is enough to make your eyes water – still, what do they say? You’ve got to be in it to win it eh? With the Beefeater Restaurant in the Haymarket having had a gorgeous new makeover and a new salon in Clifton by the name of Kuchi-Koo just opened, the city never stands still so keep up gang and see what we’ve got to look forward to. July bubbles with murmurs and the promise of new openings, celebrity chefs and so much more. The more perspicacious of you might have noted my little tease last month in the candid snap of one named Mr Marco Pierre White. I can now reveal that it’s true that he is indeed coming to Congresbury and this has to be the most fabulous news that true foodies could ever imagine. Make 06

sure to tune in to the Whisperer to hear the very latest on this as it happens. And finally, it wouldn’t be Bristol’s number one gossip column if I didn’t leave you with a bit of a teaser. Word has it (and be assured that I’m most reliably assured) an extremely well known mover and shaker on the night-life scene is returning to run one of our finest late night venues next month. Want to know more? Well you’ll just have to wait and see. With summer in full swing a final ‘shout out’ to Puxton Park who celebrate their 3rd birthday with a weekend of celebrations and the hugely anticipated re-opening of Weston’s Grand Pier. I shall be there (with bells on as they say) so if you want to hear about it at first hand you mustn’t go anywhere else do you hear. But then again, why on earth would you possibly want to! Until next time, I remain your humble servant. The Chinese Whisperer

Fast jet displays will include the RAF Harrier, French Air Force Alpha Jet, Royal Netherlands Air Force and Belgian Air Force F16s representing the cutting edge of modern global fighter technology. Not to be missed, we will be welcoming back the roar of the mighty Vulcan Bomber XH558 which will take to the skies at Air Day for the first time in 18 years. The finale to the event will be the renowned Commando Assault Demonstration with plenty of pyrotechnics!

Throughout the day, families will also have the chance to enjoy plenty of entertainment on the ground including the Fleet Air Arm Museum, interactive military displays, Royal Marines Commando Display Team, classic and military vehicle exhibitions, funfair, simulators, helicopter pleasure flights, trade stalls and much more. ● TICKETS Adult Senior Citizens Children (3-15 yrs inclusive)

Interview with: Pat Bendall of Woodlands Theme Park

attractions

Woodlands Theme Park was the inspiration of Pat and Graham Bendall in 1989. Pat is very creative and designed much of the original park. Son Mike joined the firm with brothers Chris and Phil, the family built Woodlands into a successful tourism business. Checking out Woodlands Theme Park on Google it says that the all weather attraction and leisure park is “ fantastic value for money and a great place to have fun, explore, enjoy, or just relax” Woodlands Leisure Park is situated near Totnes in Devon, the advice for new visitors is Don’t trust your satnav follow the excellent Brown Tourist signs they will take you the easiest route from the A38. The park is still owned by the Bendall family and is now run by Pat and son Chris and we had the pleasure of interviewing this dynamic and interesting lady who still enjoys the thrills and challenges of running Woodlands and we asked her why she thought the park is so successful. Q. If you don’t think us presumptuous Pat can I ask how old you are? I am 74 years old, born in Bristol, evacuated to the Cotswolds when we were bombed out in the war. Q. What time does your day start and what time does it finish? 9.15 to 5.30 or 6pm depending on workload. Part of my job is to design and theme new attractions for all three of our Parks which keeps me very busy. Q. How do you insure that you keep up with news on all the latest rides launched each year ? Members of the family visit Attractions and Trade shows in UK and abroad Q. Have you found that family visitor’s expectations have changed over the years and are the changes they expect, for the better or worse? Families and particularly children are very sophisticated. They expect and demand high standards in all aspects of a day out. I think this is fair, money is hard to come by and days out together are precious. I am saddened by the lack of manners and respect, apparently the experts tell us the older generation always think their childhood was happier Q. Do you think that Health and Safety measures/ requirements have gone to far and perhaps common sense has gone out of the window? Health & Safety costs for Woodlands are extremely high. We employ two consultants and consult with BALPPA (British Association of Leisure Parks Piers & Attractions) on all health & safety issues.. Regulations have slightly altered recently as children can now test their ability and take ‘risks’ to learn body control, which is a sensible move. Wrapping a child in red tape may not ensure all aspects of the development are best served. Q. Is the park open 365 days of the year? Open every day from March to November then open weekends & school holidays in the winter. Q. What do you do on a day off for relaxation? Relax in my garden and write children’s stories. I love 22

Whatsonbristol

architecture and history so the National Trust is big on our list. Q. Is Woodlands your family’s only theme park? We have Twinlakes Park in Melton Mowbray and Wheelgate near Mansfield, they are run by my sons Mike and Phil. Q. What other members of your family are involved in the running of the park and do they have specific areas that they look after. My grandchildren have all worked in the Park, some still are. Key players are Chris, director at Woodlands. Mike, senior director ant Twinlakes & Wheelgate with brother Phil. Chris is the financial wizard, Mike has an excellent grip on tourism & attraction design while Phil has an amazing capacity for building attractions designed by Mike & I and he is our animal expert. Q. With the credit crunch and a new government in charge what help would you like to see offered to the leisure industry? Unfortunately the VAT increase will affect small businesses. We need to market our beautiful country abroad and increase destination marketing in the UK so need to increase funding to Visit Britain and Enjoy England (the national tourism boards) Q. Do you intend to retire anytime in the near future? As long as I am providing new ideas, radical theming and increasing footfall to Woodlands I’m staying. Q. On an evening off what type of cuisine do you enjoy? Anything, I’m a food addict and love puddings, with Devon clotted cream of course. Q. Do you love your job? I wouldn’t be working at my age if I didn’t. I love new challenges, using my brain to improve the business and interacting with like minded enthusiasts. Q. Lastly Pat where do you go on holiday? I love the whole world and have visited most of it. My favourite – the Rockies in the Fall with golden yellows reflected in crystal lakes. Perfect.

Doris, the brave little Duck who defeated a Tiger fence protecting some bushes was this exciting little bird that looked very much like dinner. This was Tiana’s opportunity. Splash! The little duck reacted in a second, flying out of the pond like a missile, centimeters from Tiana’s outstretched paw. The ducklings scattered as Doris Duck, circling above Tiana’s head quacking loudly and temptingly, landed on the bank. Doris pretended her wing was broken and limped along, shouting to the tiger. HE WAITING as they say is almost over for this month heralds the much anticipated and eagerly awaited re-opening of the Grand Pier in Weston. With the gossip mongers in overdrive in terms of what the Pier will feature, one thing’s for sure the level of interest in this beacon for tourism and growth can only bode well for this bastion of Victorian sea-side charm and the economy in general. Viewed perhaps rather unkindly as a traditional ‘kissme-quick’ type venue, Weston has much to recommend for itself. One of the town’s un-sung hero’s has to be the rather wonderful Weston Seaquarium situated on the sea front. This is a gem of an attraction offering a rare insight into ocean life and with an all day family ticket allowing you to come and go as you please, it offers entertainment and exceptional value for all the family. With the sea front and stalwart donkeys in attendance, the beach will always prove a winner. However, it would be a pity to discount the other fine opportunities that exist. Whether it be bowling, the chance to explore some fabulous Victorian architecture and world class museums or to plump for the bird’s eye option and soak it all in courtesy of Weston’s very own version of the London Eye. Weston has and always will be a memorable

The Royal Bath and West Show in June 2010, was a major success, with record numbers of visitors joined with the fantastic weather. The organisers of this event were very pleased. The Whatson Team were working with the Wookey Hole team and came back to the office. We did not think that they had been working. We thought they had been on holiday to Spain as each and every one of the them had a very good tan. Looking forward to 2011 Show.

The Bristol Harbour Festival is one of the best-loved and most diverse festivals in the South West of England - and one of the biggest free events in the country. Bristol’s beautiful city centre harbour comes alive with music, dance, circus, children’s entertainment, ships and boats, markets and fireworks for this fabulous weekend spectacle. This year will see some really exciting developments and a big new step for the festival as it expands into Castle Park - the historic and beautiful park next to Broadmead and Bristol Bridge. Along with a completely new attraction (the Bristol Village Fayre on the Amphitheatre) and a major development that will see King Street buzzing (more news of this to follow), this year’s festival is set to be absolutely unmissable.

The Whatson Team were delighted to be invited to our good friends at Smart Sports Coaching Charity Night in support of breast cancer on Friday June 18. Although the weather tried hard to spoil things, it didn’t get in the way with a huge turnout for the Pink Sports Event. A big ‘shout out’ to Barry and his team who raised over £350.00. The Ladyboys of Bangkok came to Bristol in June, and the Whatsonbristol Team were very pleased to work with the Ladyboys on their VIP entertainment evening. The show as always was amazing. Good fun was had. Thouroughly enjoyable evening and it left the people of Bristol asking the question – were these boys or girls? Whichever, they were very beautiful and talented.

An evening with

Profile on Azhar Aslam

Cosmetic Surgeon

Cosmetic Surgery and leading Cosmetic Surgeon Mr Azhar Aslam The recent Linia Cosmetic Surgery Open Evening at Winford Manor proved to be a real success with many people wanting to know how soon the next one will be held! You’ll be delighted to know that we are planning another event for August, so look out for further details...

health & beauty

During the evening, Linia Surgeon Azhar Aslam performed demonstrations on non-surgical treatments, including Botox, whilst giving fascinating insightful advice on the whole range of cosmetic surgery, the benefits, realistic expectations, and his own philosophy on surgery. Below are just a couple of comments made from those who attended the evening’s event.

“

Somewhat of a cynic when it comes to the cosmetic industry I was invited to attend a recent Linia Open Evening and I have to tell you that I have now become a convert. No hard sell, no pressure, quite the opposite in fact and having had a chance to meet the team and a consultation with Mr Aslam, I am quite convinced and have just booked my first procedure with them. Linia gave me confidence and made me feel really special – I now can’t wait for it to happen.

”

“

I recently attended an open night for Linia at the Winford Manor Hotel and felt very comfortable at the consultation with Mr Aslam who took time to discuss my requirements for breast enhancement I had recently been to a consultation with another company and all they wanted me to do was sign the dotted line, they were not interested in my needs or concerns, I will be having treatment with Linia as Mr Aslam was very honest with all my concerns and was not at all pushy for me to have the surgery.

July events bring art, performance and summer style to Quakers Friars

UAKERS FRIARS will provide the stage for a celebration of Bristol’s creative heritage and cultural diversity during July, with a series of free events including an interactive graffiti project and live music and dance performances. And the English style ‘village green’, featuring grass, deckchairs and giant games including connect 4 and chess, will continue to appear throughout the month, meaning there is always something on offer for all ages in Quakers Friars this summer. Graffiti Installation (Saturday 17/ Sunday 18 July) The city’s urban scene will take centre stage during the third week of July with an interactive graffiti installation created by one of Bristol’s pioneers of underground art, ‘PARIS’. Renowned as one of the UK’s foremost graffiti artists and fashion art specialists, PARIS will create a temporary artwork for the city using six giant letters spelling out BRISTOL as a canvas – with the results going on display at various locations around Cabot Circus this summer. Local residents are being encouraged to get involved with the project by expressing what they love about Bristol and what the city means to them. To help shape the direction of the project, email art@cabotcircus.com with

your ideas or visit Cabot Circus on Twitter by following @CabotCircus. All feedback will be collated by PARIS to provide the inspiration for this innovative piece, which will reflect Bristol’s proud position as the home of UK graffiti talent. The BRISTOL exhibition will be created live in Quakers Friars square on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 July. Colston Hall Summer Sessions / Urban Dance (throughout July) Colston Hall will be hosting a live stage in Quakers Friars from Thursday 8 - Sunday 11 July, Thursday 15 - Sunday 18 July and Thursday 22 – Sunday 25 July to showcase the best of Bristol’s musical talent. Featuring a wide range of local bands and artists, the performances will take place at 5-7pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 3-5pm on Sundays. Visitors will be able to relax in the late afternoon sunshine and enjoy delicious picnic food from the many cafes and delis in Quakers Friars while watching the action on stage. ● For more information on all the above events, please visit www.cabotcircus.com. Shops throughout Cabot Circus and Quakers Friars are open from 10am to 8pm, with restaurants open until late.

A visit to the Lockside Restaurant

restaurants

I

LIKE to think we have visited the Lockside Restaurant in most of its incarnations, sometime during the 60s as the Venturers Rest (a banned location by our school making it all the more exotic and desirable), afterwards Popeyes Diner, but unfortunately never as the location for Sid’s Café in ‘Only Fools and Horses’. However latterly not so much a cheap and cheerful café but more a contemporary restaurant, they have succeeded in that most difficult of areas being all things to all people. During the day a fine range of breakfasts are served varying from muesli with dried apricots and raspberries to the full monty. There are handfuls of jelly beans and games for the children, and even water bowls outside for the family dog hoping for his own sausage no doubt, and lunches served until 4.00 pm. Opening in the evening on only Friday and Saturday, Lockside puts on its party dress and creates a chic atmosphere with low lighting and candles. As well as riverside views from the front, they have a beautiful terrace at the back of the restaurant which is where we ended up on one of the first balmy evenings of summer. Service is excellent from the moment we arrived and were politely welcomed we were positively encouraged to do exactly as we pleased: have a drink on the terrace,

Overlooking the Brunel Lock, Clifton Suspension Bridge, The Paragon and Royal York Crescent. Enjoy home cooked food with a selection of fresh meat fish and vegetarian food at affordable prices with a service that cares! Enjoy a complimentary glass of house wine per person for four eating or a bottle for tables of four.

OPENING TIMES Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 7am - 4pm Friday 7am - 11pm Saturday 8am - 11pm Sunday 9am - 4pm

eat outside if we wished, and if a chill breeze blew up, no problem, we could go back inside. The menu is small but beautifully formed as they say. I knew at once I would have baked figs with Roquefort cheese, Parma ham and balsamic dressing as a starter, and my companion decided on mackerel fillet on toast with lemon and lime butter. For mains, we ordered pan fried fillet of sea bass served with spinach, tomato and rosemary risotto and from the ‘specials’ menu, confit of duck with red cabbage and apple sauce. The waitress calmly dealt with the horror registered by my husband at the mention of red cabbage and arranged for him to have it alone with chips, just as they do in France, which upped the notch of his evening’s enjoyment no end. Both starters were excellent, particularly the figs which were meltingly soft with just the right amount of Roquefort to create taste without being sickly and someone in the kitchen can really cook fish; the mackerel was beautifully done as was my sea bass filet, timed to perfection without being under or overdone. We really enjoyed our food and the evening so this one gets my recommendation. ●

New Indian restaurant venture in city centre

restaurants

T

HE RAJ MAHAL CITY, the latest Indian restaurant venture to try its luck within the centre of the city, is so new that when we visited it was only the second day of trading. Anyone acquainted with Bristol will remember the Mayors Arms fondly, probably from their misspent youth, but this pub site has been given the makeover of all makeovers and turned into a fabulous restaurant. We were very impressed from the start; the interior is large and cool; the soft furnishings subtle shades of brown and cream and best of all the floors are carpeted so the acoustics are good and lend to soft conversation. We were expertly welcomed and shown to a table by the window laid beautifully with chic modern cutlery and crisp white napkins. Whilst we looked through the menu, we had popadoms and the pickle tray, accompanied as always by Kingfisher lager. The menu has plenty to choose from, Tandoori dishes, Biriani dishes, as well house and chef ’s specialities, with a good choice for vegetarians. We decided to share the house special starter of chicken and lamb tikka with onion bhajis and salad, followed by chicken bhuna (chicken cooked in a medium spicy garlic and ginger sauce) and Tandoori lamb chops served on a sizzling plate with onions and peppers accompanied by mint sauce and salad. We also ordered one of our

favourite side dishes, sag aloo, a mixture of spiced spinach and potatoes and last but not least, some plain rice. The starter was lovely; and great to share, with the onion bhajis scoring high on the list for being crisp on the outside, soft in the middle and so obviously freshly made. Since we took an Indian cookery course, we consider ourselves something of an expert on these having made them ourselves but regrettably not as well as the Raj Mahal. The main course was beautifully presented on a selection of white dishes, the lamb chops giving a good chance for theatrical serving from their fiercely sizzling plate. How we did enjoy our meal! The chops were good quality, perfectly cooked so as to be a little pink and very tender, and more than enough of them. My chicken dish was excellent, again first class ingredients put together well. The service was attentive and friendly; and if there was one small criticism to be voiced it would be that the meal was served too quickly, course on course. The restaurant is very nice, the atmosphere good and we would have been happy to stay a little longer. ● Raj Mahal City 69 Clarence Road, Bristol, Avon BS1 6RP Tel: 0117 983 0384

Blue Ginger, Whitchurch E LOOKED forward to trying out Blue Ginger, the new Indian restaurant in Whitchurch as it has the novelty of being unlicensed and you can take your own wine, beer, or whatever tipple takes your fancy to accompany a good spicy curry. The premises have been very nicely fitted out; the walls are decorated with a mural of swirling blue flowers (blue ginger I presume) and the chairs are black and red leather, banquette style but niftily separated by glass partitions so that you’re not too much aware of your near neighbours. They were buzzing with customers when we went along but quickly found us a table and brought glasses for our wine. Bringing your own wine definitely has an impact as the two girls next to us were obviously celebrating something and handed the waiter a bottle of champagne to pop the cork, making us feel quite upstaged with our lowly bottle of white wine. The menu has a great variety of choice, all your old favourites are catered for but Blue Ginger pride themselves on producing freshly cooked, finely spiced and flavoured food that can be healthy too. We chose to share a kebab platter for starters, followed by chicken masala (the nation’s favourite dish!) and a dish called very intriguingly “Eastern noodle delight”, which was strips of chicken and potato cooked in a wok in olive oil, served with a minced meat side dish, together with sag aloo and pilau rice as extra dishes.

The starter looked very pretty when it was served, arranged on two “wave” plates, the white china that has become very popular with curved edges. I particularly enjoyed the salad accompaniment; finely shredded yellow peppers, crisp lettuce and a dainty cherry tomato, which had been lightly tossed in a tangy dressing, supporting Blue Ginger’s healthy eating policy. There was also a silver sauce boat with dressing for the kebabs which was a piquant sauce but I’m ashamed so say I couldn’t tell you exactly what spices were used! I was being a bit experimental when I ordered the Eastern noodle delight; I love noodles but I thought with the addition of potato this might be a bit stodgy but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The noodle mixture was delivered dome shaped with a large bay leaf at the bottom, and serving the minced meat side dish with it was inspired, and again something I would never have imagined I would like. However, we fought over it, and I demanded some chicken masala in return, which was also good. It’s a quirky place; the food is very good and definitely somewhere that would be great value to have the party you couldn’t afford if you had to pay restaurant prices for wine and beer. ● Blue Ginger Bengal Cuisine, 36-38 Gilda Parade, Whitchurch, Bristol BS14 9HY Tel: 01275 837865

letters to the editor

letters to the editor dear What’s on editor, Well Bristol where did the Ladyboys come from? For the very first time I went to the show with my partner and wow what a fantastic show of entertainment I went with my wife and her friend and for any men out there reading this letter book up and go next year I did not think I would enjoy the show but am now a sold fan. Can’t wait to go next year with some friends! Sam Elliot Westbury-on-Trym dear editor, I can’t wait to pick up your magazine once a month to see all that is going on in our fine city and would like to congratulate Bristol City council for once instead of moaning at them which is what we’re all good at doing. I really enjoyed the bike ride event that they did on Sunday the 20th of June, we went and watched the event and it was great fun with a great atmosphere. We also as a family went to the race for life on the downs and again a great day out for the family with lots to do and the weather was kind for both events so well done bristol and cannot wait until the harbourside regatta is here. Bring it on Bristol! Jo Evans Bedminster LETTER OF THE MONTH I live in Headley Park and would like to have a moan. We have recently had the roads prepared for new surfacing and nearly had an accident on an evening. The huge machinery that do the jobs on the road were parked up overnight on a bad bend between St Peters Rise and Headley lane - 3 lorries to be exact. What I want to know is do the council or the contractor doing the work not have a yard to park these vehicles up over night? It was very dangerous and I would be interested to see If anyone else has written to you or the council on this subject? Liz Smith Headley Park LETTER OF THE MONTH REPLY dear liz, It’s one thing to whinge for the sake of it but you make an extremely valid point that as these are Council vehicles they do have a duty and a responsibility to the General public to set an example. We agree with you – not good enough Bristol City Council! Joe Public wouldn’t get away with this so neither should you. If someone from the council would like to get in touch with What’s On and explain the seemingly ‘one rule for one’ policy we’d be intrigued to listen. 72

Whatsonbristol

Meantime, What’s On would like to award Liz our letter of the month in the interests of being a public spirited citizen and she wins £50.00 0f John Lewis vouchers which we very much hope she enjoys. dear editor, I really enjoy your recipe pages and have had some modest success in one or two of them but can I make a suggestion? As a OAP I’m on a somewhat limited budget and I simply can’t afford to shell out as much as I might be tempted. Would it not be an idea to print some nutritious and dare I say slightly more practical recipes? I’m not trying to pour cold water on what is a most enjoyable monthly column but I’m sure I’m not the only one who might benefit from this. Doreen Stallard, Fenchurch Road, Brislington. dear team, Thank you, thank you, thank you for providing your readers with alternatives to the over inflated fixation of the 2010 World Cup. I know I’m going to be incredibly unpopular in airing these views but I bet you anything that I’m not alone – I’m just not afraid to stick my head above the parapet! Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that after reading your Cedar Falls feature I had a look at their website and I was so impressed I booked a day of treatments with a girlfriend and we had a fabulous time from start to finish. I would recommend them to anyone and so much so, have persuaded my better half to come with me next time – once the football has finished though! Well impressed! Thank you so much. Name and address withheld. dear editor, I have used the What’s On Bristol website for about the last five years but only recently made the connection that the monthly magazine is part of the same organisation. Although I see the magazine regularly I haven’t really been tempted to pick it up but since making the connection have become a bit of a convert. While I’m not going to pretend that I read it cover to cover every month, what I do like is that you can read about something in the magazine and then go the website and nine times out of ten get more information if an advertiser has their own website on display. It’s really quite effective and just to cap it I recently joined your Facebook page at the grand old age of 52! Colin Rylands, Henleaze Bristol please send your letters to: editor@whatsongroup.net

There is really one rule to Sudoku: Fill in the game board so that the numbers 1 through 9 occur exactly once in each row, column and 3x3 box.

Summer has finally arrived!

T

gardening

he wet and windy weather that we experienced last week has finally moved on and at last the warm weather has arrived. The gardeners amongst us can now pop along to the local shops and garden centres where you will be spoilt for choice, the huge range of beautiful and colourful bedding plants that can be found will confound you. Don’t forget that for the best survival rates, ensure that you water your plants well before you plant them out. Lawns should be kept well watered.

Its worth taking a day put to look at the great range of patio furniture and BBQ’s that are on display and where you can grab inspiration for your own garden of serenity, already there are great discounts to be found.

Why not take a look at some of the great conservatories that can be found that add a room to your home and yet be part of the garden. Charlie Dimmock, like the hardy perennial she is, has not been consigned to the potting shed. The Telegraph has a link to a new series of garden video tips that’s well worth a look at, it’s a season by season guide to gardening for beginners and it also includes technical advice about how to maintain the garden.

Don’t miss out on a blooming marvellous new development in Bristol!

home improvement

R

OSES ARE RED. Violets are blue. If Bristol city living with a rural feel appeals, then Roseacre’s for you... Linden Homes Western’s attractive new homes development – Roseacre, on Harry Stoke Road – is enough to bring out the poet in anyone! This development of just fourteen 2, 3 and 4 bedroom homes is enviably situated on a tranquil lane in Stoke Gifford, just south of Bristol’s Bradley Stoke ... yet within reach of great local amenities, and an easy commute to Bristol city centre. So you get the best of both worlds: a village community feel, with all the bright lights just a short drive or 11 minute* train ride away. We could wax lyrical about the merits of this area with its excellent infrastructure and proximity to Bristol Parkway Station - city slickers can be in London Paddington in just 1 hour 23 minutes* - and the M4, M5 and M32 motorway network. And enthuse further still about these new, totally ’des res’ homes, beautifully designed and finished to the highest standards, with guide prices starting from £185,000. But we’d far rather you take a look at Roseacre and be wowed for yourself. Come along to our show home launch on Saturday 26 June, where you can take a look around one of the delightful 3 bedroom properties and get a real feel for the development’s merits.

Bristol has long awaited the arrival of Sixt rent a car, which operates 3,500 service stations in over 90 countries worldwide. Jason Howell site owner of Sixt Bristol has spoken to What’s on Bristol about what Sixt can offer its customers that out rivals any of its competitors.

motoring

‘I have many years experience in the rental industry, so when I was approached by Sixt to become their agent for Bristol I had no hesitation in joining this first class operation. The last couple of years have seen the demise of some serious players in the car and van industry but Sixt keep going from strength to strength and I’m very excited to become part of that.’
