MAN’S BEST FRIEND here is nothing better than running around on a bright and sunny Spring day playing “catch me if you can” with a scampering new puppy or beloved family pet. As gay people our pets become more than just a pleasant little mascot that waits at our door at the end of a hard day of work with their tails wagging ready to shower us with unconditional love. They become the only friend that knows the “real” us and sometimes the only extended family that loves us just as we are. Our pets give us the love and acceptance that we wish from those around us. They are the only “babies” that we have always had the privilege of adopting in any state and thus we tend to spoil them just a bit. Our family consists of a stampede of tea-cup chihuahuas. After being together for almost 5 years we felt stable enough in our own relationship to bring another little life into the fold. We brought home Kahlua Love Hewitt in February of 2000. She was the perfect puppy becoming completely litter trained (that’s right our pups go in doggie litter) on just the third day. Four years later we were ready to add another baby to the mix. Next came Napoleon Erik Hexxum (named after an actor we both had a crush on in the 80s). Finally, several years latter Napoleon sired our final addition Frida Von Tease (named after the Mexican muralist and a stripper). We can’t tell you how much these pets have brought into our lives. When things have been tough, they’ve helped us forget our troubles by looking up at us with innocent faces that seem to say,”Everything is gonna be alright.” Just recently we both came down with a horrible flu and did not have the strength to even get out of bed. Along with us in our family nest laid all three of our puppies. Each one of them instinctively knew we were not at our best and instead did their best to comfort us. We are sure that if Kahlua could of reached the stove she would have made us chicken soup. Whether, you have a fluffy dog, purring cat or slithering snake there is no other feeling like the love that we get from our family pets. When we lose one it is literally for some of us like losing a member of our family that can never be replaced. They hold a very special place in our hearts forever. In this issue, we’ve asked all our contributors to share with you about the relationships they share with their own pets. We hope that you enjoy it! Also, a special thanks goes out to our friend Brody, the model on the front cover. It took several hours to get him painted (in latex no less) to look like a dalmatian. He was a real trooper through the whole process. Also, another special thanks goes out to Dandy Doggie Dos and Sparky’s Pet Salon for allowing us to borrow several of their pet fashions, accessories and grooming services for our photoshoots. Please support these awesome business with your own “family” pets.

Gidget’s Monkey Bread Growing up in my home was a virtual circus! Everything was so nuts with wacky family members always running around that my mom never allowed us to have any pets. So instead, we dressed up our little half-brother Gilbert Galore into whatever kind of pet we wanted for the day. My favorite was the Circus Monkey! This recipe was his favorite and always kept him quiet. Little tattle-tale! Enjoy! •1/2 Cup Of INGREDIENTS: Walnuts •3 (12 oz) Packages Of •1/2 Cup Of Biscuit Dough •1 Cup White Sugar Raisins •2 Tsp. Cinnamon (both above optional) •1/2 Cup Of Butter PREPARATION: o Preheat oven to 350 . Grease one 9” or 10” Bundt® pan. Mix white sugar and cinnamon in a plastic bag. Cut biscuits into quarters. Shake 6 to 8 biscuit pieces in the sugar cinnamon mix. Arrange pieces in the bottom of the prepared pan. If using nuts and raisins, arrange them in and among the biscuit pieces as you go along. In a small saucepan, melt the butter with the brown sugar over medium heat. Boil for 1 minute. Pour over the biscuits. Bake at o 350 for 35 minutes. Let bread cool then turn out onto a plate. Do not cut! The bread just pulls apart.

ust to set the record straight, everyone must know that I was mama’s first baby. Perhaps many of you may have heard of my mother. She is the internationally renowned performer/showgirl known as Danielle Hunter. But, to me, she is and will always just be mama. I imagine that like many other daughters of well-known celebrities like Carrie Fisher (loveable Debbie Reynolds’ scion) and Christina Crawford (Joan Crawford’s bitter offspring) many people wonder about the relationship that I have with my famous mama. I’m sad to report that unlike the other aforementioned cases our relations is actually quite pleasant and nauseatingly amicable. In short, mama and I love each other dearly. In fact we adore each other and it is safe to say that no one in her life loves her as much as I do. It all started, many years ago when mama married into the respectable Fantozzi family. She felt that her life was incomplete without having someone to share in the happiness of her new relationship with papa (Johnny Fantozzi), so they set out together to find me. As luck and the fates would have it, our paths crossed, our eyes locked and it was love at first sight. The rest has been a history filled with both exhilarating joy and the inevitable sorrow. Through it all though, we’ve stood together as a family. When I first came into the picture, mama was still a struggling chorus girl trying to make a name in the industry that she now arguably reigns over. I remember many a night when she would come home too exhausted to even take off her stage make-up and would throw herself on the sofa in the wee hours of the morning unable to sleep after so many hours of performing and mingling with patrons. I would try to console her as best I could by snuggling close to her and occasionally giving her tiny kisses on the cheek to make it all “better”. Eventually, I knew all the hard work would pay off and my mama would be crowned not once, not twice but countless times by her peers. She would come home with crowns that made her look like a queen. In turn, she always made me feel like a princess. As the years have passed, papa finally got his wish of a “boy” in our family and thus Prince Fantozzi came to live with us. As the years have passed, I’ve come to love him as one would a brother. He can be a bit aggressive at times, but mama always has a watchful eye out for me. Additionally, just two short years ago our family grew once more with the inclusion of Chanel Fantozzi. It is hard to even explain that one. She looks nothing like us, has way too much energy for one puppy and ridiculously large ears. I tolerate her as one does a special-needs child and at the very least she keeps Prince and papa occupied giving mama and I time to do what we do best - lounge and relax. In the end, I must say that I’m very blessed. I lead a luxurious life living in the middle of Orlando’s posh Thornton Park. I visit my favorite groomers at least once a month for a beauty overhaul. Mama always sneaks me snacks, feeds me first and allows me (and me alone) to sleep with her in the photo by: Tim Thomas big bed. Without a doubt, life is good.

Dear Sassy I love FASHION! My grandmother recently passed away and left me with an amazing vintage wardrobe. I want to be able to incorporate her thing in my own style without looking like a crazy old lady. Is there a happy medium in being able to combine old and new? Sincerely, Lost In The Past

22

Dear Lost In The Past, First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss. It's never easy losing someone that you love, but I am so happy that you have such wonderful memories in these beautiful items she left you. I'm also honored that you asked me to help you preserve her memories through combining past and present. My rule when it comes to vintage clothes and using them in modern times is "less is more." I never recommend dressing entirely in vintage clothing. Often it's too overpowering and reads as cheap. Try taking an item like an overcoat or a fitted jacket and use amazing accessories to set it off. Try to remember, when assembling a look, to decide what the focal point is going to be - whether it be a skirt, a hat or jewelry. Remember to plan the outfit around the item to make it stand out and be featured. One more tried and true fashion tip is when you are ready to go, take a look in the mirror. If the first thing that stands out as questionable...TAKE IT OFF! Of course if it's a TO HAVE MISS SASSY DEVINE ANSWER major item like a dress, YOUR QUESTIONS WRITE TO: then you will need to put something else INFO@WHATSHAPPENINGMAGAZINE.COM on before walking OR REACH HER ON FACEBOOK.COM out the door!

Dear Sassy, I'm considering getting a pet, but I'm not sure if I'm a dog, cat, fish or bird person. How do I decide what is right for me? Very Confused, Animal Lover Dear Animal Lover, Animals are such a joy to have share your life. Often they can even be therapeutic and help you with stress and can even sense when there are more serious medical issues. Whatever you choose as your pet will always be there for you offering unconditional love. I suggest that you spend some time going to a reputable pet store known for quality animals, care and advice. There you can spend time discovering what kind of animal best suits your lifetstyle. Don't feel pressured to buy that very day. You need to make a well thought out decision and not an impulsive one as your pet will be a commitment for years at a time. Look into breeds on the internet and find information about the animal's temperament and longevity. Finally, I also recommend going to the local animal shelter once you have decided on a pet. There you can find amazing animals that are in need of someone just like you! Dear Sassy, I'm considering changing my hair color. Any advice? Smooches, Color Therapy Dear Color Therapy, MY best advice is to leave it to the professionals! Choosing the right shade of color is just as important as the cut itself. There are shades that you should stay away from due to skintone, and only a professional can guide you in the right direction. They are trained to make sure you look your best. What looks good on your friend may not be the picture of perfection on you! Good luck on your new look!

Gucci Boy Jorge & Friends Strike A Pose @ PULSE NIGHTCLUB!

ecause I’m the Straight Girl in a Gay World you may think I keep go-go boys as pets. You may have visions of me leading them around on a leash by their cock-rings, or having them swing on perches in gilded cages just waiting to dance on the bar. Rest assured this isn’t the case. I have yet to train a go-go boy to bring me my slippers or a cocktail, but a girl can dream. In fact, I do have a pet - or rather he allows me to reside with him, and have the privilege of feeding him and keeping his litter fresh. Or as we call it “Kitty Glitter” (Straight Girl Fun Fact: I won $100 on a ”Kitty Glitter” slot machine in Las Vegas!). I share my home with the world’s gayest feline, Sylvester. He is my own Kitty Cou-gay. I say this because he’s like some of those older queens who only respond to young and studly men. He barely tolerates me, but let a man come into my home and he instantly turns into an outrageous flirt. All he’s missing is the cocktail and the cigarette. He even holds up his paw in the stereotypical limp wrist position. Truly, it’s a cheap ploy to demand attention; he's such a furry little fag. I’m usually lucky if I escape without being bitten. He came to me declawed and has compensated by using his powerful jaws, another fine gay trait manifested. If you were to tell him how gorgeous he is, he would simply say what his Mama says,“I know.” I hesitate to mention I have a cat.You know how cruel some people can be about single girls with cats. (Insert crude pussy joke here.) However, on those special nights, he is the perfect companion for watching catty movies like Valley of the Dolls. We both sit on the couch. I paint my toenails while he grooms himself and we share a dish of low-fat vanilla bean ice cream. He even likes to sit on my dressing table and watch me put on my make-up. I can usually feel him judging me as I get dressed as if to say, ”Are you really going out of the house like that?” In my mind he has the voice of Paul Lynde (if you’re younger than thirtyfive, Google Paul Lynde!), and makes cracks about my poor taste in the straight men I date, and how I have an ugly bedspread. But we understand each other, and even though dysfunctional and codependent, it’s one of the healthiest relationships I have. In some cosmic way, he chose me. He gets to be an only child and live in a fabulous house where he pretty much runs the show. I even chill his treats in the refrigerator. What a life! He truly loves me, and I’d be lost without him. It just wouldn’t be the same without his bitchy little self waiting to attack me at every turn. I love my very own cou-gay! Meow, Baby!

Dear Brooklyn (Or as I call you, “Daddy's Pretty Little Girl."), I think it’s a little weird when people talk to their pets, but here I am writing a letter to you. When WHM told me it was the Pet Issue, I thought,"What a perfect opportunity to tell you I love you." You came into my life almost six years ago when I was making my move from the concrete jungles of NYC to beautiful, sunny Miami. I was so excited finally to have the little house by the beach, the Jeep and the dog. During my quest for the perfect breed, I realized I had to have a Miniature Australian Shepherd. It is one of the smartest breeds out there! Since then, you have not proven me wrong. You take care of yourself and your owners, and I never have to worry about you throwing a party when we’re away. Every time we exit the door and tell you those familiar words,“Brooklyn, watch the house,” I can trust you to hold down the fort. We have been through a lot together; good and bad. When I was at my loneliest, you always had a way of comforting me, and bringing a smile to my face. Now you have another dad, Daniel, who adores you, and you never stop showing him how much you love him every time he comes home from work. My favorite times are when it's just you, me and Daddy D. When we go to lie on the couch with a blanket, and you come running and jump up with us, because you know you’re only allowed on the couch if there is a blanket. I am certain a lot of people think you’re the luckiest bitch out there, because every night you get to sleep right in between the two of us! You also have loving Aunt Brooke (Hogan), who spoils you like crazy! Believe me, I know she is always sneaking you human food. You are just full of life, and I couldn’t be prouder. You have given me unconditional love, and I want to thank you for being the best darn dog a guy could ask for. You will always be my first Daddy’s Pretty Little Girl! Love, G-Dad

Dearest Brooklyn, I'm not one to write to a pet but I have never gotten as close to one before as I have with you. I just wanted to share a few words before your sixth birthday comes in a couple months and let you know how much I love you. I know I may not always show it as soon as I walk through the door because I have "grown-up" stuff to do like take off my tie, shoes and work clothes, but I really look forward to seeing that wagging stump of a tail greet me every night. The few times I don't see you, I worry and start looking for you, but then I find you, usually by your food bowl with your favorite stuffed animal in your mouth still wagging that stump! I've never told you, but I really appreciate how you make me feel safe when Glenn is away on business or family trips. I know I can always count on you because my human ears don't function as well as yours while I'm sound asleep. I feel you have it under control when we say "watch the house," and leave you all alone during the day. You make me laugh too! Like after a bath, when you start running around the house and roll around in a towel until you look like a burrito. Then there are those times when I'm driving, you're in the passenger seat, and you push my hand with your paw toward your head to pet you, making it difficult for me to shift gears, but how can I resist you! Anyway, this is just a quick note to let you know your two daddies love you and think of you always. You make the best companion on the beach, in the snow, running errands or on the set. Best of all is when we bring a blanket to the couch and you know that's your cue to jump on up and watch a movie. That's when I'm the happiest with the three of us. Love always, Daddy D.

aking your last minute Spring Break plans? Well don't forget your puppy! Just in time for the sunshine state to start warming back up and in keeping with this month's theme, I'll give you great Spring tips for you and your furry friend. Every fashionable pooch wants the inside scoop to modern pup fashions this Spring, and my best friend Casper is here to help! If you're anything like us, you hear Spring calling your name half way through Winter and you're ready to banish your coat to the deepest, darkest corner of your closet! People and pets become depressed by the lack of light during the Winter, so maybe the cure is not just sun light and tropical vacations, but also bright clothes! Lighten up - literally! Think tank tips, colorful short shorts, and a carefree attitude. Clothes should always be about enhancing your mood. So, while you're buying your new seasonal wardrobe, why not pick up some new designer accessories for your pup too? First, the best thing for your pet to sport this season (and all throughout the year) is a healthy natural coat! Grooming is essential. Anyone can shave a dog, however it takes years of experience to groom a dog correctly. Make sure to inquire if they handdry or kennel dry their customers. Hand-drying is healthier and a better experience for your pet. Locally, I found a great grooming salon in Orlando called Dandy Doggie Do's. They always leave Casper looking FIERCE and ready for a photoshoot! Spring is all about the outdoors, so invite your dog out to brunch in a stylish carrying case wearing a matching preppy puppy polo. These days, puppy couture come in a wide range of trends and sizes (as modeled by Frida below). Now dress your pup in the hottest gear, and watch the other dogs (and humans) say bow-wow-wow!
