FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT SEPTEMBER
1666
The Great Fire of London began in a bakery on Pudding Lane on September 2nd. It raged for four days, destroying more than 13,OOO houses, 87 churches and other important buildings. On September 17th, the 18-year-old Frida Kahlo almost died in a bus crash in her native Mexico. Kahlo’s injuries were so severe that she spent weeks in hospital. While recovering, she started to paint self-portraits and, over the course of her life, went on to become one of the world’s most celebrated artists.

On September 19th, New Zealand became the first country in the world to give all adult women the right to vote in political elections. This photo features some of the women who led the campaign to make this happen.

The book Silent Spring by the marine biologist Rachel Carson was published on September 27th. It inspired people to take better care of the environment.

On September 3rd, Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery. The speeches he made and books he wrote about his experiences inspired many other black people in the United States in their struggle for freedom and equality.

The Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland was built to accelerate tiny particles around a loop deep underground to conduct scientific experiments. It opened on September 1Oth.

The Muppets are a cast of funny, furry characters created by puppeteer Jim Henson. The first episode of their TV series The Muppet Show was aired in the US on September 5th.
